I have been going to BB's for 11 years now and have 30+ trips there. In that time I have seen all sizes and shapes. Just returned from a great trip to Blackbeard's Resort 7/23/ thru 7/30. As a couple we go usually 2-3 times a year. I know Blackbeard's is up for sale but there was no signs of panic or changes that we saw whatsoever. Our trip was just as enjoyable as our first trip back in 2008. Food was good, accommodations, no problems, had A-3 bikini room. Girls were decent, outside girls were allowed inwith proper cedula's. This was my first time visiting BB's during the low season, and it was a little different. First, not as many guests. Kind of slow for the girls, so they work harder for your attention. That was both good and bad. Also a product of the hot weather). Tim and Nico were top notch. They lined me out with cabs when I needed them, laundry, etc. The mama-sans are stellar. I believe they are the reason the girls are so awesome in terms of friendliness and overall attitude.

I ain't going to lie. I spent a lot of cash down there. I was very generous with the girls as far as spending time with them, drinks, etc. And I try to tip the staff well, even though they include some tipping on your bills. But I do alright for myself financially, and I brought the money down there to spend and treat everyone right. I was very happy with my stay and I believe in rewarding good service.

Overall, Awesome time. The place fits what I like perfectly. My next trip to the DR will most likely be a Sosua / BB's combo trip for a change of pace. But I'll do another long visit soon enough.

The ride from the airport to BB only took about 20 minutes (not including the beer break). My first thoughts were a bit disappointing as I only spotted a few chicas as I walked thru the bar to the reception counter. After getting unpacked I opted for a short power nap. This is not a brand new shiny resort, but in general it is well maintained. They were doing some improvements while I was there (one night they were grinding out the grout between the tiles in the bar area; went on to a little past 1 am; was rather annoying). I stayed in the Jacuzzi room. The room is large, but I never actually used the Jacuzzi. I started to fill it up, but due to low water pressure I figured it would take a few hours. In addition, the tub also doubles for where you shower; the water drains slow (if take a longer shower the water will come up to your ankles) and leaves quite a bit of soap scum on the tub. As I started to fill the Jacuzzi the soap scum formed a layer on top of the water; not something I wanted to bathe in, so I just gave up on the idea. The bed was large and comfy, there's a good sized safety box in the closet, a fully stocked mini-bar / fridge (don't remember who posted, but mine did have some candy bars, LOL).

The staff was always friendly and helpful. Service at both the bar and resto was top notch. The girls were also friendly and not pushy about servicing you or about buying them drinks. However, if you did get one of them a drink they were very appreciative. I also bought dinner / breakfast for a few of them (we ate together) and without exception the girls would share whatever was left over with the other girls. Like any other work place the girls had their own little cliques, but I did not detect any animosity between them; not once did any staff member or chica have anything bad to say about BB's or each other.

I have stayed there twice and have no desire to go again. The girls were fine but not outstanding. What I did not like is the girls are a captives. 10% of the girls get 90% of the action. Most seem very disinterested. As soon as you get a nut they are putting their panties back on looking for the next guy. Usually there 2 or 3 nice girls out of the 20. But your comment, while true, is not very helpful. Averages are not relevant in this comparison. Let us say, hypothetically, that:

Blackbeards has 10 "8"s, 10 "7"s, 10 "6"s, and 10 "5"s. Total: 40 chicas.

Sosua has 10 "9"s, 25 "8"s, 40 "7"s, 40 "6"s, 40 "5"s, 40 "4"s, 40 "3"s. Total: 235 chicas.

Blackbeards would clearly have the higher average quality, as you rightly claim. But that is irrelevant, because Joe Monger will simply ignore everything below "7"s in both places. All that matters to him is that there is a greater choice of "7"s and above in Sosua.

Both places have their advantages depending upon the monger's budget, mobility, street smarts, and (above all) knowledge of Spanish. But quality of chica should not decide his choice of venue.

We are all different in our resources and requirements. Much as I admire Blackbeards, I would never take a chica from there. Why? Because I only go with haitianas and there have been none there for the past several years. Not an issue for 98% of you, but as I say, we all have our peculiarities.

I presume you are not looking to pick up putas in Pto Pta? Not a lot of point in paying a small premium to stay at Blackbeards in order to have putas at hand if you are going to search for them in Pto Pta.

But if you want to just socialize with non-putas, the bars along Avenida Luis Ginebra are where the middle-class bright young things hang out. Or a more socially-mixed crowd in Calle 16 Agosto.

If you want an authentic local experience which you cannot get in Sosua or elsewhere in Pto Pta, visit La Embajada (I think it is still called that but it changes its name more often than I change my underpants). It is on the Costambar side of town, fifty yards along Penetracion towards El Muelle from the junction with the main highway from Costambar. It is where I spent my happiest hours when young (still under 70, I mean). The chicas are mostly fat and plain but you get the rare gem. I am still living with one of the latter group five years later. Be aware that it is a real low dive. My friend said that he had "lost the will to live" after visiting the gents toilet so make sure you go before entering the joint. You can dance bachata and merengue on a tiny dance floor. The air is smoky and the music deafening (though I have suffered worse in Sosua). Drink prices are cheap, of course, because this is where the underclass go. Be prepared for police raids (no problem if you have a copy of your passport) and the occasional fight with flying bottles once near closing time.

Thanks in advance.There is a beautiful beach 5 minute walk from Blackbeard. Costombar Beach. On the beach are a few places to eat and drink. One of our favorite places to eat while in town is "The Catermaran. " An Austria expat by the name Paul runs the place and his wife does the cooking. It is located at the far west end of the beach. He has beach chairs you can use for free.

Maybe you don't see that many people swimming is because there aren't that many people there during the middle of the week. I would estimate that beach is a mile from one end to the other and you may only see 50 people . I've seen many locals in the water though . There are two young boys I see go out and spear fish and lobster in the reef right there. The reef is teeming with life. Lots of cool stuff to see!

In the recent BlackBeard's newsletter, they reported that their chef of 10 years, "Gringo," has been suffering from kidney failure.

As a result, he has had to leave work, and is getting dialysis treatments 3 x a week.

He and his wife, Adriana, a waitress at BB, have 3 kids to provide for and their situation is critical.
All he can do is hope for a kidney transplant, but the Dominican health system will provide little assistance.

Those of us not fighting a life-threatening illness can show our gratitude for our health by lending a hand to someone who is facing just that.

Most people need the big five gallon jugs to take to the cheaper machines so Walmart jacks up the price knowing you will take the jugs elsewhere and won't bring them back. I like the machines because they are serviced regularly with the date on the machine. When in the DR I always stick with the brand names like Dasani and Evian. I don't trust the no named water bottles in the DR unless I have no other choice. The smaller one gallon jugs I change out every 3 months because there are some people who say using the same plastic repeatedly has health concerns also.

Powdered milk, evaporated milk, etc. Personally I have always made coffee in the DR with tap water and also used the tap water for cooking. If you are going to boil it anyway, that should destroy any lurking amoebas.

Dominicans drink little or no iced tea, which I drink in huge quantities, and you can hardly find large sized teabags in the supermarkets, but that is their loss. As well as the usual 5-gallon bottles of water that are seen in every home, the 10 peso bottle of cold water is the cheapest cold drink that can be bought when away from home and is available everywhere.

A 10% tip is already included on all bar or meal bills. Obviously this amount doesn't include your flight. As you walk into the complex, straight to the back to check-in, they will be watching the "fresh meat" arrive.

Once you're checked in, settled in, showered, maybe napped, you'll go down to the main area, the bar / restaurant.

The girls will be scattered around the bar / restaurant, pool area, lobby.

Basically, just pick one you like, give her a little eye contact, and you're off and running.

Would suggest a little time to get acquainted first; it improves the chances of developing some chemistry / rapport.

Practice your Spanish (or learn some). Treat her as you would your date, not a "worthless ho" and it pays off.

Treat them badly, and you will get the minimum required. And they share information on the clientele.

Could have complained to mamasan, assuming she could understand English, but thought that in the long run the best thing to do was just admit that I got beat and pay her. No, it was pretty clear he knew he was over charged when she hit him with the 10 K. I think the issue was they've agreed to a deal, but the girl did a switcheroo and denied the agreed-upon price. I agree though, had he stood his ground, been more forceful (rather than kiss and be nice) taken the argument to management, the outcome would've been different. Once he paid her, the horse is out of the barn and understandably BB couldn't do much..I'd say this is an accurate assessment of what transpired.

The only reason I spoke up for her is that she has been a great provider for years at BBs. I would hate to lose access to her while I'm there because someone had their pride hurt.

Other than this one bad experience, I had a great time there-swam in the pool, ate lots of salads, walked the beach, tried other resturants, wanted to take the Paradise Island snorkeling trip but a chica messed up my schedule-should have just cancelled and went anyway. There are still a few chicas I wouldn't mind seeing again-hope that puts things is perspective.

References to your "safety concerns" were in context to being arrested. The probability of BB or the chica calling in the cops was / is nonexistent. On the cancer issue, that is a separate matter. I have recently dealt with that battle, so I am not unsympathetic, but it is not part of the discussion. I have also served my 20 in uniform.

In a friendly, respectful manner, if I had been in that position, I would have caved only after a very long discussion with a gringo manager, not a mama san. They are facilitators, with no real authority as it applies to customer relations. Again, respectfully, I suggest that if you had devoted as much effort at the time, instead of well after the fact, it might have served you better. I suggest that if you had paid her the 2000 and left it at that, what would she have done? Called the cops? No. Complained to management? Good chance, but I would prefer rational discussion with another gringo, than the chica. She might have been pissed off, but no cops would have been involved. "Better pissed off, than pissed on. " I have witnessed incidents when it was the customer that cheated the chica, and there were heated discussions, but no cops.

Agreed, this deals with ONE performer, but note how comments quickly painted the entire place with the same brush.

Such incidents there are very rare. One would have to search the BB thread very hard to find another, so overall, knocking the entire establishment for one reported misunderstanding with one chica and a mamasan seems unreasonable.

It seems she quotes the absurd price regularly, but is usually declined. As there is no set price for anal, she can ask whatever absurd price she wants, and customers are free to decline. I think most guys, presented with her unreasonable demand, would have taken it up with a gringo manager, but I speculate that you felt under unfair pressure to pay her, as you might have been concerned about being delayed in a Dominican jail, and missing a monthly cancer treatment. As a result, you may feel particularly victimized.

In the end (no pun intended) the incident was unfortunate, but a rare occurrence. In my mind, the experience at BB, overall, is good, and those that wish to can avoid Angela. Moreover, they can make it clear to her exactly WHY they want nothing to do with her, and she will learn that her type of game will cost her money in the long run.

There is absolutely no issue in picking up the girls. They are all over the place. Sitting out by pool, sitting around in chairs under umbrellas, at bar, etc. They will be approaching you as soon as you are checked in. Depending on time of day you arrive, you can take a cab to Caribe Tours bus station, get a bus to POP for just a couple of bucks, then take cab to Costambar / BB. Only drawback is that this would be slightly more time consuming. The buses are comfortable and air conditioned. Cab from POP to BB would probably run about 700 pesos, a little under 20 dollars US. Cab from airport to Caribe Tours about the same.

If you are traveling with a friend, you could split a cab. Depending on time of arrival, you might negotiate a ride from STI to Costambar for about 70 dollars, according to some on this board.

If you arrive at night, less leverage, and you would probably pay about 120 dollars. You can contact BB and ask for a cab. I have seen on their website, they will do this now.

For photos, you can check the BB thread for pics, or request their newsletter for monthly pics, including girls.

You will have no problem pairing up with girls. Every girl on premises, apart from bar, staff, is there for sexual service. There are day and night shifts of girls. Reportedly there is a book available (not totally inclusive) of the girls working there. Just make eye contact, and take it from there. Don't be a door mat, but be polite and respectful. Just in case you are confused, Blackbeards is a long way (about 25 miles?) from Sosua. The nearest city is Puerto Plata (3 miles).

Do not change dollars at Blackbeards unless a small amount in an emergency. They give a poor rate.

Noting Mr Charles Pooter's comments, not sure what answer you got on the Sosua thread, but upon passing through a gateway into the Costambar neighborhood, you will see a grocery store on the right, called Jenny's. That is the best place to change dollars. Ask the cab to stop for a few minutes while you go inside to change money (unless you already have pesos to pay him). Suggest only changing a few hundred.

Exchange rate: Yenny's Market in Costambar paid 45.80 pesos to the USD and that's pretty much well known as the best rate in the area. Convenient ATM right outside the store might do a little better but did not try.

Weather: No detectable rain in 5 days. Temps in the mid 80's modest humidity, light sea breezes, much cooler than the crushing heat wave that hit the northeast USA During our stay.

Finances:

1000 pesos RD=$21.83 USD.

100 peso RD=2.18 USD.

1 peso RD=02 cents USD.

ST (1-2 hours) costs 1,800 pesos RD=$39.30 USD.

Arrived with about $1,540 cash USD and 7,000 leftover pesos DR and departed with over $400 USD unspent with no need to use the ATM next to Yenny's or exchange at BB's front desk at their lower house courtesy rate of 43.80. Bottom line: For 5 nights including room, bitches, booze, meals (one meal out at Sola Mia's rest. nearby), taxis, tips, etc I only spent about $1,200. However, my kill count was a bit down this trip, usually 2 nuts a day not including the twice daily no leche jacuzzi BBBJs. Got a break on my flight cost with 70,000 air miles burned, just paid a little over $100.00 for the usual taxes and fees. Right?

Our two year hiatus to BB's was caused by our group traveling together to SJO and two trips to MDE for a change of pace. Nothing personal, we just wanted to sample different venues for comparison to BB's. We all loved Costa Rica (generally more expensive than the DR) and Colombia (generally a bit less so.) Pussy costs more in SJO as a rule but it's about even in the DR to MDE, Colombia, maybe a tad more in MDE at an upscale venue. Outside food is about the same in SJO but MUCH cheaper, varied, and better in MDE. Taxis are WAY cheaper in both SJO and MDE over the rip-off taxi unions in the DR. Flights to SJO and MDE are normally cheaper than POP for us anyway. They say POP has a heavy airport tax to fund infrastructure improvements. That's OK, the local politicians gotta eat too. Right?

Entered the armed guard checkpoint to the gated community of Costambar and stopped into Yenny's Market for our usual counting party in the back of the store. We each exchanged exactly $1,000 USD, stuffed our pockets with that thick monopoly game peso wad and bought some bottled water on the way out. BB's is a 2 minute ride away. Gave our driver a 200 peso tip and swaggered into the compound like it was our home. Entering BB's always gives me that feeling I get at home when I put on my favorite comfy pajamas or bed slippers in the winter after a hard day at work. Tim was there, as always, and after our usual exchange of heart felt, smart ass, sarcastic greetings, another counting party ensues as we each pay $384.00 worth of cash pesos for our room, tax, and split taxi costs calculated at 45.5 to the USD. We always pay in pesos to save a few bucks. Grab our keys, a few more jokes, and a quick review of our framed wall pic from a previous trip. Yup, we made the wall of shame along with dozens of others. We love Tim (in a non-gay way) and Tim loves us. Right?

Thankfully, the Olympics was on down there piped in on a NYC based NBC station. We are both HUGE fans and spent a lot of time in our AC rooms watching it between sessions. Though they won't admit it, so did many of the other guests, much to the chagrin of the chicas. The TV's at the bar and dining area were usually fixed on the Olympics too and there was often several other guests watching. The place seemed a bit over half full, a bit slow but not dead by any means. A typical day for me started with a cup of that decent colon blow Dominican coffee. First coffee dump (or two) out of the way, time to get some exercise. I found a nice 5 K distance run in the area. For the runners reading this, turn right out BB's front gate and just hug the coastline following along a decent dirt road with nice houses. Turn right when you can't go any further along the coast and follow a common sense route back through the hood on some side streets till you hit that small hill with a nice view just behind Yenny's in the village center. Dodge the moto concho retards and just before the obvious security gate turn right on a paved road for a long, flat straightaway with the golf course on your left and decent houses on the right with some helpful, cooling shade trees along the way and turn right at the end and descend gently to the Mango's Golf Course club house. BTW, Mangos looks like a nice place to try lunch or dinner but the gym is small and needs better AC. Take your next left on the dirt road and you'll see the ocean. Follow this coast road to the right that many BB's enthusiast already know, all the way back to BB's taking your first left after the tennis courts. Bring a bottle of water with you for hydration. But I digress. My first night started off with a double team BBBJ in the Jacuzzi followed by a nice 3-some finish back in the room with some background porn on. I NEVER put my charges on my room. It's much better to pay as you go to avoid accounting errors, and they do happen there sometimes. EVERY purchase results in the bartender hand writing a paper bill. So, let's say you wanted to buy a cup of ice for 5 pesos, the bartender painfully fills out a new paper bill just for that transaction. If you're hanging around at the bar then she'll just add to it as a tab. Ice is free BTW just using the above example for agonizing effect. When you're done, pay up. A small beer costs about $3.25 and a large Presidente was about $4.28 without the tip included, based on their drink menu. The most expensive mixed drink on their menu costs about $7 but most are in the $5 range. A bottled water costs $1. 77. WTF! In that heat, especially after a run I was pushing lots of water. I think that's too expensive. I adjusted by severely limiting my booze intake for health reasons and to economize. Maybe I should just go to Yenny's and buy a case of bottled water. Right?

Other observations: The WiFi was great down by the bar but would drop in and out back in my room on this trip. Nico stopped in on his crutches and it was good to see him recovering from his accident. He thinks he'll be back at work in 2 weeks, hell, maybe he's back there now. The staff service level was a bit better than all of my previous trips and the staff was much less retarded this time around. They were a bit faster at the restaurant and bar. We only had one botched meal. One night we asked for spaghetti with "marinara" sauce. When we pointed out a service error we were firmly told that Dominican marinara sauce just happens to look and taste like a creamy Alfredo sauce. Really? Who knew? We ate it anyway. Retarded. Another time I ordered a standard item on the dinner menu only to have our waitress enter into a lengthy consultation with another waitress as to what I actually wanted on the menu. They've both been working there for years yet haven't seemed to memorize their menu yet. Functional illiteracy perhaps? No, as I said earlier. Retarded! Yet, we both love it there anyway and keep cumming back for more. In all of my world travels, including a 6 month stint actually living in the DR, I can firmly state right here and now, and without any equivocation, that the DR is probably the most retarded place on earth. Right?

Will we return? Yes, without hesitation. As I wrote above there is absolutely no question that BB's offers the best bang for the buck in the western hemisphere. There is NO other place exactly like it. Yes, the "Mansion" in MDE is awesome, no question. Go there if you haven't already. And in SJO, venues like Hotel Del Rey, and the Sportsman Lodge along with Hotel Cocal in Jaco Beach have many good points. Go there too by all means. But at the end of the day BB's continues to offer the best value for the money, less travel stress overall (except for their airport retards), convenient beach, safe ambiance, less drama, and it's perfect for the budget minded first-time monger looking for a proper introduction to our hobby. Also, why think just a chica did it. I am sure that there have been many customers who have been locked out of their safes only to complain to the Blackbeards management and they finding a way to circumvent the security of your safe. For all you know it could have been a worker.

I've been to Blackbeards several times and know of cases where they have taken money, personal belongings, workers intentionally giving incorrect change back, and even overcharging for the food, only to pocket some of the money (and, of course, there is always the chica you spend time with ordering, behind your back, extra beers for her friends).

I admire the owner John for lasting so long in the business and I would continue to go to Blackbeards whenever I get the chance (although I've found greener pastures elsewhere) but one needs to use discretion even in such a place. To say the workers or chicas don't steal in Blackbeards because it is against the rules is like saying there are no murders committed in the United States because it is against the law! The rules only lessen but do not stop any wrongdoing.

If you were responsible with your money and feel that someone took it this is what most likely happened.

You would be surprised what the workers and women would pull when they are dealing with intoxicated customers. Sometimes the sum of money is so low that the customer is not even aware of it. I've seen it.

Regarding this cell phone: would like to have a working phone as I'm on a flexible schedule and I've bought a one-way ticket to the DR. Will be playing it by ear once I get there. Suspect I can get an orange card at the airport. If not, will deal with it during the week at Blackbeard's.

Hopefully can post some trip reports. New to the world of smartphones. This may be a boot camp for learning this device as one has to do something between rounds.

You don't have to tip but sometimes it's easier to just hand over 2 one thousand peso notes rather than dig for smaller bills. One trick is to save up your smaller bills from the change you get at their bar and keep it in the room safe just so you don't overpay. My experienced wing always brings those small bank envelopes he saves from home and when he gets there he fills those up with the exact 1,800 and just hands those over to the girls with no tip included. LOL. When we exchange money at Jenny's market we always ask the guy in the back room to break a 1,000 peso bill and give us some 100 or 200 peso notes for this reason. Hoard those smaller bills. Tipping is entirely optional and should only be done for good service.

Just got back after a week at BBs. Prices quoted are correct: 1800ST, 3300 LT. Plenty of chicas hanging about. Spent time at the beach, but did little else. It rained a lot and I couldn't dive or do any of the hiking or country tours. Bad weather, and the recent hurricane blew away my chances.

Sorry, no pics this time, but Ii recommend the Italian restaurant in Costambar. Fantastic owner, and good pizza and steak.

I have New Years free, and was thinking of dropping into Blackbeards. Anyone ever spent New Years at Blackbeards? I assume that they have some kind of party. Do the prime girls work? Or is it empty, as the girls spend time with their own families?

Manny I've done NYE there at least 1/2 dozen times. At first it was a problem as the chicas would book out of the place to spend time with their families. My last 4 trips or so BB's management has cracked down and it's been fine but expect that about 1 minute after the ball drops in Santo Domingo the place clears right out. New Years day picks up and things return to normal after that as they all need some coin to buy presents for their Latin Christmas which happens about a week later. This obligatory pic was taken from one of those trips. Have fun. Geo.

Quick question, I am staying at Blackbeards next month but because of a scheduling conflict they are offering me the owners house across the street. I am a vet of BB's but I have never seen the house and they don't have photos of it. Anybody have any knowledge of the house and its amenities?
