There is very little activity on the whole Laos board now.
Is it because few people are travelling in Vientiane?
Is there a dead nightlife scene? (I can't believe that)
How about Bor Pen Yang? Still a potential hang-out?
Other updates? I hope to be there late July to mid-August. It would be good to have some recent news on the scene.

Please give some reference points.Ask a taxidriver, they know the club. The best way to write the name on a piece of paper. The club is located in the center, the name was about "ToatHome Club" or something like that.
There are many locals, the good women are not available. Also there are a lot of foreigners. A good place to drink, but a not so good place to take a 8-10 home with you.
The music is techno-like, extremely loud and it's very cold.

As is always the case, just when I go to BPY with 3 work colleagues there are lots of available girls alone and in groups smiling and winking at me and I have to ignore and act normally as my colleagues would not understand.

Spent a few nights here before I make my adventure to the Lao-China border.
I checked all these hotel pick ups. I was quite disappointed that LOD 1, 2 and TiHow have turned into some massive commercial enterprises. There are tours buses of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thais guys that swarm these places all night. The ladies have become very very commercialized more than their Thai sisters.
I did try 3 the hotel pick ups, but all very cold and motionless. Don't even think of service here. The time has changed in Vientiane. The most joyful time in Vientiane in the 90's to early 2000's is now history and in memory only.
Also TiHow, LOD1, 2 now have become very mafia like establishments. I felt quite uneasy with all these gangster mean looking young thugs all over the place. It wasn't like that some years back. The quality also has gone way down.
I found some new shops when I was walking around. Near LOD2, I found 2 Vietnam shops. It is hard to describe the location because they are somewhat hidden inside an alleyway, but very close to LOD2. The shops were dark, I was waved in my an old mamasan. She told me all girls from Vietnam. About 6-8 girls in each shop, I did see some doable ones.
The mamasan successfully pushed a new comer for LT to me, quite pretty in my standard, ST she quote me 50 USD, but come down to 40 with little bargain, ST action only allowed in LOD2, LT quote was 80 USD, but gave me 70. The girl was Viet, and spoke zero English, only a few Lao-Thai words. They telephoned a samlor for me to go back my hotel.
I had a good bare BJ from her, first BJ in Laos this trip. Kept her until 2 am, and sent her back, she asked 20000 kip for samlor.
My final night, I kind of over spent in Mekong karaoke. I tipped the mamasan to intro me some girl with good service. She was not too sure about this but only heard from some of her customers. I picked 2 to go for a drinks. There were so many girls, lots of them marching around the hall way, some stay in their waiting room, it is hard to see all of them, then a huge Chinese business group came, and took 20 of them away.
I picked one out of the 2, went for LT, the LD was quite pricy now, about 40000 kip, beer 25000, LT quote 650000 kip, or can pay in USD 80. This is the only place I find that you can pay the body fee afterwards to lady. Other karaoke places here want fees in front.
The girl was from north Laos, still low mileage, some brief BBBJ, very nice body, the only one allowed me to eat her meat this trip. Wanted to send her back at 3 am, but she fell asleep, so had to bear up with some stranger in my bed till the morning. I took another 50 mg Viagra early morning, but she was in a hurry to go. Crap I wasted a good boner.
Okay, still some ladies to keep you company in Vientiane. But good old time is gone, and price steep due to the masses of guys from China, and Thailand, and local Laos are getting richer and richer, these business do not need to depend on us anymore like it once was.

Thanks to a mountain of work plus an appointment list of meetings from hell I had very little time to indulge in our favorite pastime.
I was also staying in a hotel which frowned upon guests in rooms and as my hotel had been booked and paid for by my local employer I was worried that any extracurricular activity would be relayed to them. Another expat staying in the hotel told me he had brought back a friend one night and they gave her the 3rd degree, insisted on registering her and charging him a joiner's fee as well as warning him next day about the perils of picking up Lao girls.
I managed to get to Bor Pen Yang on 3 nights, and it is still a popular haunt for guys with many Viet and local girls cruising in from time to time. No stunners though and a few fuglies. English is not widely spoken but if you have some Thai language you will get by very well.
I was chatted up by a very attractive woman one night in Kop Chai Deu restaurant when I was sitting at the bar waiting for my work colleagues so I had to turn her away before they arrived. She found another punter very quickly and away they went.
Vientiane Plaza Hotel has a great spa and massage annex and I visited one weekend. The girls are virtually all Vietnamese. Extra service was available as described in an earlier post here.
The disappointing thing for me from my last visit in May 2012 was the enormous spike in the number of cars on the roads. Something like 40, 000 new cars were registered in the first half of the year, and for a city with a population of just over 800, 000 there are way too many registered cars.
This indicates that the economy is rapidly expanding and people are ditching motor cycles for cars but the roads are not equipped for such an increase. There are no parking spaces either so cars park on the footpath along virtually every street in the city and so pedestrians have to walk on the roads and dodge the traffic too.
The restaurants are still wonderful and Beerlao still tastes very nice so all is not lost but Laos is not a venue for mongers.

Agree with other posters. Vientiane is no longer a place for mongers, at least not for falang. These days when I am asked the best place for mongering in Vientiane I say "Nong Khai" (across the river in Thailand).
Bor Pen Nyang is more ladyboys than real girls, so be careful. The few available hotels and clubs, as mentioned recently on this thread, are oriented towards Asians and the girls are now very expensive (over $40+ ST) and offer terrible service. Ridiculous compared to Thailand.
Plus the authorities still look for chances to arrest the unknowing falang who take a Lao lady to a room. To get out of this situation can cost the falang thousands of dollars. Sleeping with a Lao lady who is not your wife remains illegal in Laos. Beware.
If you come to Vientiane for business, do your mongering in Thailand on the way in and out.

I flew in from from Luang Namtha on Lao Air ATR, the same aircraft that crashed into the Mekong several days ago. This time safe landing.
I met up with a friend and we rented jumbo all night. We went to Tihow, and the lobby show case was gone, concierge directed us to the karaoke, before there was a fast food pick up, seems like now they are doing the karaoke, my friend spotted some girl he likes, so I was forced to pick out a lady for a drinking session, actually I hate the procedure.
He decided to all nite his girl. 100USD, drinks no included, I did not like my companion, I waved her to go back, my friend was willing to join me for my next search.
Got back to our private jumbo, LOD1 again we came, it was again so busy, I got turned off by these hordes of mini van Chinese and Thai guys, actually I saw one I like, but mamasan said she student only can stay till 6am. 2500 bahts, no discount for this one, I pass.
The next stop LOD2, out of ladies, mamasan said some Thai groups took 10 away.
I was running out of places, called a mamasan in Penguin Club, she said she had a few for my viewing. I inspect them, but did not really want to fork out 85 USD for companionship for some one I don't feel I can get horny.
I set my friend and his night friend loose, and set the jumbo loose after drop me off at Mekong karaoke.
Again I had to drink a few beers to make me decide faster. There are lots of girls everywhere, just cannot find one that I can imagine I can have good pounding with. My first night in Vientiane yesterday and went to Bor Pen Yang. Quite a number of girls, but mostly already with guys (possibly French navy / sailors). There were a few other girls who were dressed quite well sitting across the bar. Thought of approaching but main issue is I didn't know whether my hotel is guest friendly. It was already getting late (past 11pm) and they would have already locked the doors, with only way in being to wake up the guy sleeping in the lobby. Not sure how well it would have gone down coming back with a lady in tow at that time of the night. So returned to hotel alone.
Popped my head into Samlo Bar along the way. 3-4 girls sitting around all looking pretty bored. No real lookers but option is there.

There isn't much going on here in this thread. Somebody asked in few posts back why this is, and if Laos should be avoided what mongering is concerned.
The answer IMHO is somewhat like that (your experience may vary, I respect that) :
1. Prostitution in Laos is illegal. There are no mongering bars, strip clubs or anything you may find in Thailand's top mongering destinations, Phuket, Pattaya, and / or Bangkok (also rarely in the countryside in Thailand either).
2. I do not know of any better hotel in ALL of Laos which would be "girlfriendly". The owner of the hotel would get into serious water in case somebody would report him / her. In case you get caught by the police while having fun with a Lao girl in your room who is NOT your wife, it would provide a very welcome windfall for the officers. (Remember it's all about the money, not only in mongering but in the police force or any other government institution here as well.)
Having said that of course you can have a great time, especially in Vientiane, but also in I. E. Pakse, not so much in Luang Prabang. In Vientiane there is of course the Vientiane Laos Hotel which has a massage / spa place in a separate building, staffed exclusively with Vietnamese ladies. I hesitate to report on the service level there, but I know. You may PM me. Besides the obvious Vientiane Hotel, there are quiet a few massage places where you get a decent massage and a BBBJ, CIM, for a tip.

It adds to my recent experiences late last year (see post #9). I particularly agree with your comment that those of us who know some more information hesitate to put it on an open board as we all know that the "authorities" read these boards in a clandestine manner.
However, there are some examples of hotels which turn a blind eye when you enter with a friend, especially if "she is well dressed and doesn't look like a tramp" (this is a quote from a hotel manager that I befriended 2 trips ago). I asked him straight out what was the scene in his hotel because I was working and I sure didn't need anything to besmirch my reputation.
The "girls" on the scooters are not just around the fountain and they can pop up anywhere but they trawl frequently up and down Fa Ngum (the street alongside the Mekong on which is Bor Pen Yang bar). I said "girls" because a large percentage of the scooter riders are men dressed up like girls so it pays to be aware of this. Personally I think it is probably the quickest way to get set-up or get yourself in trouble and I have always kept walking and never availed of the offerings.

Spent about a week in Vientiane recently and saw clear sings of working girls, although I didn't confirm. Walking down Rue Setthathilath at 11:30 one night I passed a crowd of three streetwalkers who asked if I was interested, and another evening I was chatting with some massage parlour girls who joked that for $50 one of them would be my girlfriend, so the city is not dead by any means. I didn't pursue because I found a freebie local girl via We Chat. Search the list of females nearby, say hi to every one within 3km that has some English in their description and / or pictures of alcohol in their recent posts (mine had both) , and see what happens. We texted back and forth for a couple hours, agreed to meet for dinner the same night, went to the club together after dinner (athome club, her idea) , then basically spent the next 4 days in bed. I speak no Lao and she paid her share of everything every time. Something good to be said about the culture there, imo.

Hard to believe your description about the hotels. I have personally taken numerous girls to at least 4 different hotels in VTE. Those hotels were generally the top of the range. Apart from some old rumours, I have never heard in the last 5 years of anybody getting and trouble with the law for being with a Lao girl, hooker or not.

I am not sure what planet Frankfurter is on but I am flummoxed by his thoughts about this lovely little town. Or maybe it is just his choice to be eternally pessimistic and drift through life being pleasantly surprised. Whatever he is on, do not let him drag you down to his level.
Vientiane is not Bangkok or Pattaya in much the same way that Laos is not Thailand, but that doesn't mean they are diametrically opposite. Put simply, they just do things a little different here. Like politics or driving, it might differ or be opposite but the result is generally the same.
Prostitution may still be illegal in Laos but it that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Sure there are few, if any, Thai style bars and pick up spots but do a bit of low-key digging and you will find some nice surprises. It is the same all over the countryside.
I plead guilty to not staying in the 'better' hotels so I do not know how they manage the guests requirements but I can tell you that any 4 star or lower hotel will not have a problem with your guest provided you keep it discreet. And don't we all want that?
I have booked into a number of hotels with Lao friends standing next to me and they have never been asked a question nor have they been asked for their local identification. I have also taken a few 'new found best friends' back to my room after dark and the same result. No questions, no warnings and no additional charge.
All of us have heard of the threat of arrest but I don't think there is anyone on this forum who could plead to a problem with the local LE. Unless they were stupid enough to make a big scene instead of just copping the loss and walking away.
There are a few hotels like the quoted Vientiane Laos Hotel with on-site massage services. You will find them all over Laos you just have to ask a local tuk tuk driver or concierge. You will find one or two, even in Pakse and I guarantee you will get a room even if you are over 40.
In the end, just remember Laos is not like Thailand. But in its only low key way it is delightful place to visit and the people are welcoming. There is plenty of good quality advice in these blogs. And despite what Farnkfurter advises, it is way cheaper than he thinks.
Take it from someone who knows, try it. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Even guys living with Lao girls but not married used to be careful and some were advised by the village headman to send the girl back to her parents until the holiday period was over.
It is illegal to live with a Lao person of the opposite sex in Laos unless married in Laos. They used to reserve this law for foreigners living with Lao girls. This also gave them the excuse to visit hotels especially before big holidays. But not the very big expensive ones obviously.
The trouble in Laos is that the law is not clear and not applied equally and consistently. Some village headmen give problems and some don't. I would say that outside the big holiday periods that central Vientiane and Luang Prabang are fine for bringing a lady back to the hotel (assuming that the hotel is GF, of course!
I think I posted this before, but there is a MP inside the parking area of Vientiane Plaza Hotel. They charge roughly 250,000 Kip for 60 minutes massage. You choose your girl from a fishbowl, mostly Vietnamese. Inside the room there is a steam room, jacuzzi and massage table. You can opt to have steam first then afterwards the girl will wash you down, scrub every inch and crevice of your body. Then the customary massage. For me, I prefer that she give me a good back massage first. When she asks you to flip on your back, she will then pop the question, want a HJ, BBBJ or quicky. Before they would ask you that checkin to the hotel first, but last month, we did it right inside the massage room. 400,000 Kip for one shot.

Spent 5 days here to get away from all my normal Thailand distractions, get some work done and get a new visa. Here is what I learned:
La Ong Dao Hotel 1 is indeed GF friendly (just use the back entrance). However they now have karaoke rooms there. So I couldn't find this room of people showing you girls to take away but maybe there is something you can do with the karaoke girls. Some of the karaoke girls were gorgeous. Friend who spoke decent Thai asked a few people hanging around in that parking lot about girls and no one had a clue.
Make sure you get one of the nice rooms if you stay there. The cheaper ones are a disaster. The nicer ones aren't so bad.
After my friend and I struck out looking for the hotel girls we talked to a tuk tuk who said HE knew a place for 1200 baht and if we didn't like them HE had a few other options. So we said sure.
It was a short drive from L O the 1 (I didn't bring my phone but my guess from his driving is that it was around: 17.9542292,102.6344427 but don't go looking walking around trying to find it.) The name of the place was wonder land guesthouse (not to be confused with W L G 2 which is downtown.) Maybe if you talk to a tuk tuk HE might know the place.
When we go there they took us to a room and about 5 minutes later there was a group of around 8 girls sitting around us very quite. All cute but no stunners. None of them spoke a word of English and they were all Laos girls. My friend picked one and then I grabbed another. The cost was 400,000 kip for full service in one of the rooms. The rooms were ok. A lot better than I expected.

Stayed at La Ong the 1 3 types of rooms. 600/1000/1200 baht. Looked at all 3 types. Only the 1200 baht room was ok.
3500 baht for a taxi driver to get us to Dan Savhan Casino and back 9 hours later. Road there was still under construction.
Pot holes everywhere. At least 14 km of bad road. Sad part 6 months ago the road was in the same condition. Close to a 2.
Hour ride. Would only be about an hour if the road was decent.
Casino didn't have any casino ladies at the bar but there's a karaoke bar across from where the main entrance to the casino is.
Looked in there was about 15 dressed up ladies working there. Sorry didn't get any price info!!
Didn't get back to town until 11 pm. Back parking area of La Ong the Hotel there were 7 ladies in a 600 baht room all avg looking.
They asked for 2000 baht ST and 3000 LT. Way over priced.

Ok if you have a problem with picking up freelancers then Laos is not the place for you to monger. There is the few MP's located in hotels and back ally brothels but they are not safe in my books. On the main road there is one bar which is clearly geared for Japanese and Chinese punters. If you have good game you can take one home but be prepared to buy a mountain of lady drinks. They stand behind the bar in a row as well as have the Karaoke rooms upstairs, but these girls are time best in the bar scene similar to BKK. I 100% endorse a bar called At Home. My Lao friend brought me again to this local Karaoke bar. This is way far from the riverside area way past the Patuxay Monument. Girls are mostly a 6 but at least not demanding $80-100ST. If you check Agoda or Asia Rooms etc you will see that Vientiane Plaza is a hotel with a separate health clinic (massage) as part of it. Entrance is separate to hotel.
Mekong Hotel (as the name suggests) is a hotel with a rather garish and organized disco-type place on ground level.
Appears to cater for SE Asian and East Asians more than westerners but you can still be lucky if you stick to your routine and don't let the waiters, mamasans or whatever con you.

The trouble with the La Ong Dao hotel is that it does not have any ladies during the afternoon or even early evening, when I feel safer moving around Vientiane and am more likely to be sober enough to do the deed and in the mood. Most hotels have no problems with visitors in rooms during the day and before 10 pm. I think you were taken for a ride. Perhapss you asked if it was OK for her to come to your room instead of just walking in with her.

For those who don't know, the Vientiane Plaza Hotel MP is not in the main hotel building but in a separate place adjacent to the front entrance.
They now have a wall chart determining the prices.
60 min steam bath, jacuzzi and massage is 150,000 kip.
40 min steam bath and massage is 80,000 kip.
In the past I chose my therapist from a fishbowl, but today at 3 pm there were only 2 girls sitting in reception and I was assigned a tall attractive Viet from HCM City, who was much better looking than the other girl.

A quick update about the scene in Vientiane.
Things are very quiet here.
I have noted the complete absence of the girls / ladyboys on motorcycles who used to ride alongside you in the evening as you walk to or from your venue and offer massage or just try to get a conversation going. I always ignored them before as I figured it was a classic opportunity for a set-up but this visit there are absolutely none to be seen; I was told by a long-staying expat that it has all been "cleaned up" so that explained my observation. Not sure why the clean-up, or by whom.
Much more affluence apparent in the city too with groups of Lao citizens dining out in the excellent restaurants that have traditionally been the venue of expats and tourists. That's a change from previous visits. Still a heap of tourists and backpackers around too.
I have not had a chance to try the on-line sites but last time I looked they too were quite slim pickings. Even BPY is quiet. Certainly up to around 11.30 pm there has been little evidence of any FLs around. Drop Zone is also quiet.

I rented a car so I tried to discovered more new places. I went around the usual hotel pick ups a few times, the level is getting worse, but took quite a few of them anyway. Tihow and Sosaphone have raised the ST price to 350 K and over night to 600 K. LOD 1,2, Wonderland, Mekong, stay same 300 K. Tried a few here and there, but all just straight open leg boom boom. No one even close to give any blow job. Chinese customers everywhere, I mean everywhere.
A few times, the tuk tuk drivers took me to many Vietnamese houses, they are scattered all over town, 3-5 ladies in each house, these houses are just ordinary private houses, some disguise as massage shop or salon shop, but many just ordinary houses. Price is chaotic depend the shop mamasan and your bargain skill and tuk tuk's commission. I paid between 250 K to 350 K. Viet girls have a better service.
I found this time there are some local restaurants with girls for take out. They are on the Kamphengmueng road on the right side of town where the trucks pass to avoid the city. Found about at least 6 restaurants with ladies and surprised to see quite a few decent ones. But price quote for LT was from 500 k-600 k. Or is this only a report forum?Lao Golden is a long way away from the center of action Slick. I suggest that you look at hotels nearer to the so-called fountain that appears on maps as "Nam Phu".
Also "That Dam" or the black stupa is also a good reference point.
Look for hotels around that central area along Rue Samsenthai, Rue Setthatirath or Fa Ngum (which is the long road closest to the Mekong), or any of the streets linking between these 3 parallel streets.
I just returned after working in Laos and Thailand, and there are literally 100's of small hotels popping up everywhere. Do a thorough search of Agoda or Hotels.com and pick a place that suits you according to your budget.
It's difficult to predict about GF hotels as every one I have ever stayed in has had signs saying no guests in rooms unless married (ambiguous, I know) but some of these same places turn a blind eye. TH.The hotel will have 2 drivers that hang around all week with private cars. You can hire one of them. They also have the van drivers from the visa run. They will also take a group of you out if you pay for their gas. The hotel officially is not girl friendly. All your visa run mates will see you bringing the girls back or better yet they will do the walk of shame in the morning and everyone will see her exit your room in the AM. Keep in mind it is ileagal to have sex with a Laos girl when you are not married. Off the record, after midnight the hotel staff sleep on the floor in the lobby and you can easily take your guest inside and in the morning she can exit if she goes around 6 AM without being noticed. Tried to book the best 3 stars possible. Bro in another forum suggested Season Hotel as it's one of the newer 3 stars property. Booked for about $50 USD / night. Good location but lousy service. Luckily I hedged by booking another property (part of Day 2 report). Through same bro, I made arrangement with private driver with specific request, we prefer night activity so they can start the day later but need to stick around till around midnight. It cost us 2,000 THB all-in (incl gas, car, driver, 8-12 hours of driver's time each day). When I was here, those tuk-tuk and other transport charge us 3-4 times over local and we really have no choice. Don't want to waste time and mood going through that exercise every time we need to go somewhere.
Driver picked our party up at airport. He even provide me local phone / SIM although we prefer buying our own local SIM because we need to use our personal smartphone. Chose $7 USD package from Unitel that gives us 10 min call time and 450 mb data over 3 G.
Checked-in to hotel which was around 15 min from airport. Grab quick meal at restaurant (Makphet) next door, highly rated on Tripadvisor. Made calls to local WG but no reply (her LINE profile said she already had BF so this could explain no response). Called local talent agent and gave our spec. Received photos via LINE with profile: 18 yo just finished high school. Look-wise didn't jump out to us. But definitely seemed fresh. However, quoted price of 5000 THB is a no-no.

Decided to take what we thought was the best one there with us. 3000 THB overnight which we had to pay upfront.

We paid 3000 THB to the house (we asked how much in KIP and we lost 15-20% on exchange if we use that currency) for one and went to meet previous papasan. When we met him, the two WG he brought recognized me. They came from the same place we were at! Of course we had to pay 2000 THB premium going through this papasan. We quickly realized that this place is the source of upper middle range WG distribution.

It's flexible. Some hotels display a sign at the check in counter saying that guests are not allowed in rooms unless married. It always makes me laugh because of the ambiguity (married to whom?)
The sign is to cover their tails. Many (most) nowadays turn a blind eye to it, but sometimes it depends on the security guy or the clerk on duty.
There have been reports of scams too where the clerk calls up the local police and they knock on your door and expect some payment to go away (and the clerk gets a cut), but it's all vague reports, and I have never met any victim of such a scam. I can't imagine hotels wanting to alienate guests in this way.

Last Christmass holiday I travelled from Vientiane via Vang Vienh to Luang Prabang.
I confirm that in Vientiaene around the Nam Phu Fountain and the surrounding streets there are many massage places.

Straight from the US state department, China and Vietnam I know have a cohabitation law as well and I know it is also enforced on occasion in China. But Laos is a special case and the reason why it gets such a large excerpt on the state departments website. The Lao police cannot easily convict a brothel if two Lao citizens are in a room but a foreigner and a Laos girl is automatically a crime and is a jackpot for the police if the brothel is not protected. That is the reason why information is sparse on Laos and the popular places stay popular and the underground places tay underground in Laos specifically.

But during this trip, I actually enjoyed a tourist trap that I avoided before. The Vientiane Plaza spa had brought in a few nice young providers. I tried 4 of them during my 60 day stay, and all very consistent in service and attitude. The system is very easy for newbie. You pick a massage package and pick a lady, as for me I always pick 60 min 130,000 kip. The play fee is negotiable. But they will quote you about 400,000. You can try bargain down to 300,000 or 350,000.
I will check out this place again next trip after new year for my next long stay. This place definitely very easy for Lao newbies.

I have previously reviewed this place here and it seems like it is "business as usual", but with some new providers. I agree that it is simple and straightforward.
If you go during the day you might find only 2 or 3 girls are lying around in the lobby (no fish bowl functioning) and they tend to rotate in turn.
If you don't like the girl assigned to you tell the guy checking you in and select another one.
In the evening there are more girls to choose from.
Besides all these joints along Kampengmueang, I also found more and more joints along Sithong Road. I rented a car half the time so I drove around very often. I counted there must be at least over 40 joints of different setup all along the Kampengmueng road all the way 10 kilos south of the center. I still enjoy these restaurant joints. They open early afternoon and it's fun to see all these girls lying around sleepy face early afternoon. Drinking a beer while watching them get ready for work. Lots of joints do not have any signs at all. The Chinese lantern, or some flickering lights are some indication. These joints are no longer all locals anymore. I found more and more local expats and adventure minded are venturing out of these tourist areas to the suburbs.
I found many more Lao and Viet joints along Sithong road, must be around 10 of them along the way. Some are in restaurant setup, some are just typical residential house, you have to be observant and a little courageous to go in and ask, watch out for the Chinese lantern or a little pink neon, or some guy standing or sitting outside suspiciously.
One day my regular girl took me to a cafe for dinner near the Thai visa place. I noticed a shop house without any sign with a guy constantly watching the traffic outside. I was pretty sure there is something inside. The next day I drove there and parked the car in front and the guy called out to me. Turned out to be a Viet joint, only a few minute walk from Thai visa place. And found another joint further down the road as well. All these Viet joints all over town are still good value at 150000 to 200000. They will definitely quote you more but use my number as guideline. Viets are good service oriented. Most of my Viet sessions were at least above average.
There are also quite a few joints that I previously never knew on Asean Road and there a street that connect to Sithong Road that I do not know the name where Mitsubishi dealer is, I found 2 quite large shops that looks like a Chinese massage, sign in Chinese with Chinese lanterns. I was curious so I went in to see what they have. I was right, they offer special as well. I definitely think Vientiane is by no way less convenient than Bangkok or Phnom Penh for a quickie.
I will be back soon after new year for maybe even a longer stay.
I had my local lady visit me at my upscale hotel, came straight to my room with no hold up by reception. However, the phone rang in my room at 10 pm and reception asked to speak with her. I thought uh oh, this could go bad.
They just wanted her to hand in her ID if she was staying the night, but I told her we should wrap things up and she finished me off, gathered her things and was out the door by 10:20.
Sure enough, on checkout I noticed a small sign at reception saying "no visitors after 10 pm". So, book them early for room service, but otherwise an overnight is acceptable as long as IDs are shared.
And once again no charge by her.

About Mekong karaoke. It is no longer like a few years ago. It still has quite a number of girls, nowadays mostly older girls and many have been there many years, the last few visits I never saw anything worth the value. You probably have to get a few LDs and change a few girls to get what you like, it's hard to get under 1500 bahts ST unless you regular local customers, some girl only want to go ST room nearby, that's another 300 bahts, some girls may go your room even take you on her motorbike, but that's up to the girl, so overall plus all the karaoke drinks, you are very likely pay over 2500 bahts for an hour ST. To me it's very bad value.
Vientiane Plaza sauna still has a few nice ones. I just went there 2 days ago, 2200 bahts in all. It is a tourist joint, but it is quite reliable recently.

I was in Vientiane right before the new year just for a couple of nights.
I had most success with a tuktuk driver who I paid to show me spots all over town. We ended up at a string of beer bars up near the airport and settled in at one where the girls looked fresh. The four of us (mama gave the driver a consolation girl in addition to the one I chose) went through 8 bottles of beer and all ended up good and drunk. I took my girl for the whole night at 500 k +90 k for beer and 60 k for tuktuk driver. Certainly not the cheapest way to enjoy Laos but a good value. Back in the room the girl was very cooperative and ended up leaving around 10 the next morning after several rounds.

1. A cluster of 4 adjacent bars on Chou Anou Rd. It's few kilometers out of town so you need to make sure you've got a scooter / car, but well worth it. Great selection. Exact coordinates are 18.030708, 102.625696.
2. Many bars along Sithong Rd between Asian Rd and the connector that joins Sithong to Asean. Rough coordinates are 17.978719, 102.587877.

As Dog says, prices are not cheaper.
As an aside, the plethora of massage places in and around the tourist areas now have a number of girls who are now more inclined to offer extra service if you ask for it (but you should ask discreetly). Many restaurants and coffee shops give the bill in USD, Kip and Thai baht so you can pay whatever suits.
Many girls quote prices in baht so the baht is a medium of currency too.
I have found that there is no preference by the locals. It's up to you sir. If you already have a pocketful of baht just take it with you and use it without exchanging it.
If you do use baht to pay, just be very aware of the conversion rates so you are not getting ripped off if you get a price quoted to you in kip and you offer to pay in baht (and vice versa).

The kip is the official currency so by Government decree there will always be a price given in kip for regular transactions in all Lao businesses, unlike Cambodia where everything is quoted in USD.
The Morning Market merchants always quote prices in baht because they deal with large tourist buses coming across the bridge from Thailand with Thai shoppers. If you ask for a price in kip they bring out the calculators, and that's when you need to be able to do the arithmetic in your head, because they are professional price manipulators.

Every time I'm in Vientiane, I always end up here. This is where the good talent goes. There are a few bars in the downtown area but they close at midnight where At Home disco is open till about 2 or 3 in the morning. I am planning a trip in May or June and hope this place is still up and running. Laos is better for the freelance game than massage places.At home was still running hot last night.

Lao ladies are very sweet (if you can find one with reasonable English skills). In general, English is fragmentary.
As Dog says, prices are not cheaper.
As an aside, the plethora of massage places in and around the tourist areas now have a number of girls who are now more inclined to offer extra service if you ask for it (but you should ask discreetly). There are two spots I'd recommend on the north side of town:
1. A cluster of 4 adjacent bars on Chou Anou Rd. It's few kilometers out of town so you need to make sure you've got a scooter / car, but well worth it. Great selection. Exact coordinates are 18.030708, 102.625696.
2. Many bars along Sithong Rd between Asian Rd and the connector that joins Sithong to Asean. Rough coordinates are 17.978719, 102.587877.

While the Vietnamese girls will definitely be more active to get your attention, and even call you to come, the lao girls won't, you need to be the active party / talk mamasan.
From shabby looking "shops" to the last one after Soi Satti, which is fancy looking (glass doors, all purple neon lighting, Chinese text, girls very dolled up). Expect the prices to be accordingly. (150,000-400,000 for st).
While the Vietnamese are ages 22-30. The lao hostess bars and MPs are mostly not age of Majority. Some were 18+ (I had some beers and asked the girls who looked it) but most, without even needing to ask, easily can see they are not (was sad and shocking to me).

Range for LT I'm guessing is 300,000-600,000. Always ask and negotiate.

Petrolimex Gas Station (17.9761499, 102.5914592) The first Vietnamese shop is just next to it (to its left).

I've seen at least two dental clinics here as well, so if you also need dental work hehe.
Short trip: was in Vientiane for 2 night.
Came in on Thursday afternoon. Went to Vientiane plaza massage place around 5 pm. 7 girls available, chose Aw, very pretty girl in her early twenties. Look 9/10. Little English spoken. I can confirm that action only takes place in the evening-I drove by this stretch of Sithong Road once during the day and all the places were completely deserted.
The whole area is clearly aimed at the locals, not tourists, and no one that I had interacted with spoke a lick of English. I also did not see any non-Lao people when I was in that area.
I had intentionally picked a hotel within walking distance of Sithong Rd, so after a 20 minute walk in the dark (which in no way felt unsafe, although pavements are lacking in Laos, so watch the traffic) I made my way to the designated area. I estimate that it is a mix of 60% Vietnamese brothels, and 40% Lao. It is fairly easy to tell them apart, as the Viet girls have fairer skin and are much more active at calling out to you as you walk by trying to wave you in (I guess when they see a single older white guy walking by at this time of the day, it is pretty obvious why he is there). The Lao girls are much more shy and the only person who would sometimes call out would be the mamasan.
The brothels are indeed mixed in on both sides of the road with regular business. In that area I would estimate there is a total of about 10 brothels, on average with 5-9 girls in each. The girls are usually sitting outside, so if you walk really slowly, you can check them out pretty well just by walking by (that is what I did). There is no need to it down and buy a drink.
Since I was in Laos, I wanted to go for a Lao girl, and one of them did catch my eye. Was just my type, although I would describe her as cute rather than a stunner (having said that, none of the girls in that area were the stunner type). I stopped, looked at the girl, then approached the mamasan (who funnily enough, was also manning the noodle soup stand). I pointed at the girl and gave her my phone to put in the price. She put in 150 000 kip, which per BoomBoom0's post is already on the lower end of the scale so I just nodded yes and gave her the cash. She kept 50 000 for herself and gave 100 000 to the girl.
She led me to a room in the back, into the most hardcore mongering experience of my career. It was just a room with concrete cider block walls and unfinished wooden floor covered by an aluminum roof. There were a few very thin, dirty futons on the floor. Having said that, the girl was very clean, with no funny smells. She insisted on full lights out for the sex, so visuals were limited. However, her body was fantastic, thin, firm with nice small perky boobs. BJ was not offered (which I think is the norm in Laos brothels), but she was affectionate in a shy kind of way, with lots of hugging and light kissing in the lips. Have finished my first trip in Laos. I have visited Luang prabang and Vientiane.
For the tourism part, I feel Laos in every aspect very similar as Thailand, the temples in Luang prabang are so beautiful and precious. But the feeling in Laos are very natural and simple. Not commercialized as in Bangkok or Chiang mai. Maybe still not a very popular tourism destination yet.
Mekong river is beautiful and remained its original appearance. The night market has obvious local feeling and unforgettable. Lao People very friendly.
But the price level in this country is far more high than I expected, especially in Vientiane.
The food, accommodations and the transportation are the same or more than Thailand. They don't have taxis, so Tuk tuk is the only choice. They start from 10000--20000 Kip depend the negotiation or luck. Food quality medium--low but price not. Hotels also. Not cheaper than Bangkok or HCMC. Compared with their economic level.
I tried Vientiane Plaza Massage. It seemed now the price are fixed and you have to pay all in front at the counter before you go with the lady.
530000 Kip one hour. Ladies from 4-9 I think. Really have some good young things. I came there 2 times and the last time the lady was pretty good. A solid 8. But finally we didn't take them out. Very expansive 900000 Kip for Long time and I believe the attitude or service will not be very good of my hostess. Finally, this trip is Ok, but not something outstanding. As for a first time trip. For example, you say they don't have taxis. There are MANY taxis in Vientiane, with meters, and I use them all the time when I am working there because I am wearing business clothes and like to have aircon travel when I go around to various work sites. There are numerous taxis that stand by on the corner near Lao Plaza hotel down towards Day Inn and Sabaidee at Lao Hotel. I had 2 phone numbers and just called them when I needed them.
Taxis are the easiest way to get from the airport. After arrival just go to the desk near the exit. It's a fixed price trip to the city proper (last time I was there it was $7 usd.).
Your experiences in Vientiane Plaza massage don't correlate with mine either.
Don't base your conclusions on one visit or even 2 visits like you did. It is quite variable there, with a huge turnover of girls. Just be prepared to go with the flow. When I stayed in Vientiane for 4 months recently I never saw the same girl at the MP twice, and virtually all girls are Viet too (at least, from my experiences).

I had the best intentions of getting to Sithong Rd. , especially with all the great directions, but I am a lazy monger from a near-arctic climate and it was hot as hell. So Ventiane Plaza Massage it was. Two visits, both decent. I've now moved Vietnam up several places in my "Must Monger" list.
Each visit was mid-afternoon which seemed to be a slow time: I was just assigned the one girl sitting in the office. Not sure if she was all that was available, though on the first visit there was clearly at least one other: see below. As it happened it wasn't a problem because each of the issued girls was at least an 8.

I tried a massage shop on Chao Anou with women dressed in matching uniforms. That's usually a bad sign that you won't get any extras and that was in fact the case here, even after I repeated the next day. But the massage was quite good and reasonably priced (90 k or 360 Baht). I even asked for extras but was shot down. She doesn't go to the hotel room either. She did tip me off that the girls in the massage shop next door do such things. So that's exactly where I took my business next.
At this shop next door, they don't have uniforms. Good sign. They assigned me a girl, who was quite cute so I didn't complain. She suggested I shower, another good sign. On the bright side, the food is decent here (by Loas standards, not by Thai standards) and surprisingly reasonably priced.
I poked my head in Kop Chai Deu several times, but it looked dead. I think there might be an inside area with girls? I only saw the outside seating area.
I saw only a few FLs on the street, sitting on motorbikes. Most looked like LBs.
A few things I didn't try but read about here or elsewhere. KTVs seem too expensive for my blood, and not convenient. I wanted to try some apps, but I couldn't even sign up without a phone number. I couldn't even get those free SMS services to work. Dalah spa sounds promising, but it's very far from the fountain area and tuk tuks seemed expensive and difficult to negotiate down in price. La Ong Dao Hotel 1 and 2 are also a bit far and the reviews aren't so great any more. The massage places near Scandinavian bakery only had aunties so far as I could see. One taxi driver seemed to be saying he could call a girl for me. I wish I had taken him up on that.
My overall opinion of Vientiane is that it's better than almost all the spots in Europe or the USA (you can score here at a reasonable price), but I wouldn't rank it high within asia (not in the top 15 cities). I also wouldn't really recommend it for tourism. The food is not great compared to Thailand, and most things aren't as cheap as you might expect given the infrastructure. It's not especially easy to get around. I suppose I'd like it more if Thailand didn't exist, but it really suffers from the obvious comparison. I wanted to like this place, but didn't and probably won't return.

So next month I will be tramping through Saigon and Cambodia and I am looking at going to Vientiane on the side but internet airfare appears to be around $240 from SGN and Phnom Penh. That will give my wallet dyspepsia. Do you guys know some tricks or strategy for getting better airfares? Overland transportation seems to involve 18 hour bus rides and more and that is not an appetizing option.

I don't think I would call Anou Paradise Hotel a "boutique" hotel though, as that implies it is small and selective and more expensive. At best it's a 2-star hotel and far from selective. I have used it as my "second" hotel for a 1-night booking when I knew I was going to get lucky. My work arrangements and colleagues prevented me from taking friends to my regular hotel because I needed to be discreet.
Good tip for a place to use though that is free from any problems. As you said, the bar next door is linked to the hotel so it doubles as a ST place for bar clients. 1500 THB (or just under 400, 000 LAK) is still the going rate so that's good for you too.

Would be nice if there was a pool table in some or they weren't on such busy roads not very discrete. And I hate karaoke.

Thank you for your response. There seems to be not a lot of interest in Vientiane probably because most sex places are outside of the Mekong area and not obvious to the casual tourist who is stuck due to the tuktuk ripoff.

I have had some more daytime experiences. I think you will know which places I am taking about.
First one is just off Sithong Road near a Mitsubishi dealership. FS covered in a massage at 2:00 PM. She asked 150,000 Kip. Average face and body. Funny thing about this place was I went back again the week after, picked a different girl, it was the worse massage ever and she wan't game for anything. So it just depends who you pick, sometimes lucky sometimes not. I will try again since there is usually about 12 girls lazing around, maybe ill get a better one next time.
Second one is in a Sitong Road massage, one of the two that are right next to each other across from the fuck hovels. BBFS CIP with an oil massage about 6:00 PM. Nice face and body. I haven't done anything so it was safe and the girl opened the door. The owner looked at us for 5 seconds, and then just went away. I have no idea what was that about. Lost the mood and the massage finished in 30 minutes without anything extra. I know for sure this place is actually a f* shop cater for Chinese customer, every time I pass by at night time I saw the girls in revealing clothes.
The other one at Sithong, I lost interest. I talked to one of the girls while having a real massage, she told me the working condition is very bad and they don't get much.
The thing is, I actually go to massage shops for real massage because I have a bit of problem with my shoulder. From the Sithong intersection, drive to the direction of the bus station. About 1 km ahead there is a Vietnamese massage shop on your right hand side, with big billboard. This is a f* shop that opens daytime with a bit older viet girls. Rate is 100 k for massage and 200 k more for action.
From above shop, if you drive further ahead about 2 KM there is a real massage shop on your right hand side. This is the 1st one on my prev post.
And if you drive further ahead, there are two Massage & Karaoke shops on your right hand side. I saw both opened as early as 3 PM. I never tried these massage+karaoke shop but they are 100% f* shops.
2nd one on my prev post: Drive from Patouxay to Donenuan direction until you see Angkham hotel on your left hand side. About 2 KM ahead there is a big intersection. Take a left turn and follow the first massage sign direction.
3rd one: Say you drive from Itecc mall exit, take a left turn and drive ahead about 2 KM. There will be a massage shop right next door or a music shop on your right hand side.
4th and 5th one: drive from vientiane center to the direction of Thadua road (opposite direction of morning market) and take a left turn on the first roundabout. Take a right turn on the next roundabout. Take a left turn at the intersection with the traffic light. Drive ahead and if you see massage shop attached to a hotel on your right hand side then you're in the right direction (I haven't tried this one, BTW). Drive ahead until you see small massage signboard on your right hand side. Take a right turn to the alley and you'll see the shop. This one is the 5th one on my prev post. The girls told me, if I want action guaranteed, better visit on the evening. But if you don't take this shop, you'll see another massage sign board on the next one or two alleys the same side of the road. This is the 4th one on my prev post. The owner of this place is a mid age lady who always wear short tight pants and seems happy to show her leg to visitors so I think she knows and approve the extra activity.
And the 6th one: From Vientiane center drive opposite direction of morning market. After the second roundabout, take a notice on the alleys on your left. Other that those, I had a stupid one last Monday. So I notice just opposite the road of Itecc exit, there is this one massage sign board pointing to an alley. Thank you so much for the information. I'm back in Laos since I had to leave for a couple of weeks. I will start to go on a hunt very soon this weekend. Yes, we can't name names here but your directions are good for tracking them down to give them a shot. I like trying new massage places too since I have a bit of a lower back problem and a weekly massage keeps it in check.

Maybe 10 pusao in each place and both places are frequented by more by Chinese customers. These are no high end karaoke places, low prices for beer, food and everything else. But at least they have bucket showers in the rooms. Pusao 170,000 KIP, I think 20,000 goes for the room but maybe I pay a 20,000 KIP falang tax. The one I had ST was well worth it.
In both places the pusao (all Lao) ask for food to be bought, and they all seem to be starving haha. But food is not pricey so it's OK. They actually have an nice atmosphere, can sit outside and drink and eat, no blaring music in your ears. Also not on the side of the road with people peering in at you as they walk by.

Actually if you explore the Sithong intersection, you will find that all 4 roads got fun places. The one opposite side of mitsubishi is rarely mentioned but you can find quite a few local establishment there.

Drive slowly and take the road shoulder, look on your right hand side for a massage signboard about 100 mtrs ahead. The signboard is kinda hard to notice so drive slowly. If you drive passed a fuel station then you have missed it and unfortunately it will be hard to make you-turn. The massage shop is 100 meter inside the alley.

During the day, there are half to a dozen drivers around old city area, but scarce after 10 pm. And, none available after 1 am. No big deal, since most places shutdown before midnight.

Massage with BJ is hard to find, and even harder to find consistently. I have actually never had both together despite trying. I know one guy that got lucky. It was some time in 2016. I had arrived not long in Vientaine by myself. So decided to take a stroll by the river side. As I was approaching the area around the fountain I was trying to take not of the massage spas along there when out of the shadows this lady approached me. She said her name was Eth a 35 year old MILF and we had a few minutes of chit chat asking me where I was just a tourist or working in town. Who am I to refuse. Took a shower together where she cleaned me really well with soap and dried me with a towel. Body was typical small breasts, petite but firm body. Then proceeded to the massage. Nothing to write home about but sensual enough with playful touches back and fort. I pulled her close and went to work. She was a bit reserved and shy so wouldn't do any other position but mish. Bummer. Was good none the less. Once done I dropped her back at the fountain and we exchanged numbers and I gave her 100,000 kip. She told me she would continue coming to visit until my wife came to join me. We saw each other about once a week over the course of a year. Kept her as my back anytime I was not able to score anyone else. Sometimes she came and left without any donation but I made sure to double it the next time I saw her.
After a long time of not hearing from her (I was traveling a lot then and then my family came), I got a call from her asking where I was. She was in front of my home. My family had just arrived and was at home then. Explained that family was back and that I would call her later. But she replied 'no don't call me again' and I never heard from her again. Didn't try contacting either since I was busy with family joining me.

I've walked past several low-end Lao brothel shacks mentioned before on this forum, mostly along Sithong road. Looks like facilities are terrible, but they're cheap and seem well stocked.
I read online that Lao law forbids sex between foreigners and Lao citizens (if not married), and that penalties are high. In addition, those brothels could potentially have other legal issues like trafficking, and obviously, prostitution itself.
Hypothetically, what is the risk for a foreigner of partaking in such places in terms of police? Some of those places have been around for 10+ years and aren't exactly hard to find (right on the main road). It's obvious that the cops know about it and decide to let it go on, and that it poses no risk for a local. However, a foreigner does stick out, and I wonder if it's risky for us.
Are there any relevant news or hearsay about foreigners being arrested for mongering in Laos in recent times? If one gets in trouble, would it be easy to bribe your way out, or is there a strong likelihood of jail, court and all? I was tempted, but didn't partake due to paranoia, I wonder if it was justified.

Looks like the Police gave them a rev last year, so curious to know if your reported sightings are since that date?
Of course it could have been a publicity stunt by the police, a message to keep up the flow of tea money or many other reasons for a show of force.
I did partake there a few years back. It was hit and miss, mostly miss. Not many of the girls wanted to go with a foreigner and it seemed they were not pressured to do so.

Not the least bit surprised there was a police crackdown sometime in the middle, those places are ideal for transmitting and the whole world was in grip of Covid measures.
What interests me, specifically, is police risk for a customer, particularly an obvious foreigner. Seems really difficult to gauge.

A few anecdotes aren't necessarily an accurate picture either. There was comment pages back where someone found themselves in the middle of a major police presence but wasn't stopped from riding away. A comment was that the police were more likely there to check for weapons. One place I checked out the girl shook her head and said "only Chinese". Another place (the only one where I partook as I met a fairly chatty willing provider) my drinking companion pointed to another customer sitting with a girl in a gloomy spot and said distastely "he american". So there are a few foreigners, maybe a lot of Chinese, around there. I think there's a warmer welcome in the country next door thou.
