Hey guys,

Hope you can solve a little problem for me. I am going to cr and will be using my att cell phone there (international network). I do not want any one to know that I'm outside USA. Problem is. Last time I went to cr, when I was not using the phone, somehow, a recording in spanish was heard by the callers.

Has anyone used their current cell phones in cr? Any tips? Please advise.

Thanks

FYI -

Last visit to CR - I was there working for 90 days and I had a local CR rental phone provided by my employer, and was told that all US based cell phones would not work in Costa Rica....since they have their own cell phone network there.

I was under the impression that most if not all - US cell phones would not work at all in Costa Rica.
Is this correct or am I missing something ???????

Have used my ATT world phone in CR.

You need international service on your plan.

Thanks guys.

...not that I know of. Same thing happens in every Latin American country I've been to & sometimes they get a French recording when I'm in Toronto. That's why when I 'say' I'm going to Toronto & don't want to talk to the wife I never turn the damned thing on.

I have tried travelocity and priceline and can't find lodgings offered at either place, and it would be a great way to save money, if either offer a package deal. It looks like I am going to go in October, my first time and I am excited.

The travel sites like Travelocity/Priceline/Expedia do not offer flight/hotel packages for monger hotels, its only family orienated hotels that are put up for package deals. You have to go to their web sites to book a room.

Also its spelled Del Rey

I have just completed my plans to take 4 weeks of Spanish lessons at Costa Rican Language Academy (CRLA) in San Pedro, a suburb on the east side of San Jose. The school is near Mall San Pedro and the University of Costa Rica. So far I have been pleased with this school. They have spent a lot of time on the phone with me answering my questions. They helped me find a place to stay, and they are going to meet me at the airport (no extra charge). This school seems to be a little more focussed on academics than the mostly vacation-oriented schools that are numerous in CR, and I am fairly impressed with the pre-test that they have already asked me to complete. If anyone has any experience, good or bad, with this school, please post a response.

Hopefully, I'll be able to spend a weekend or two at Sportsmens Lodge. Should be great for practicing mi español.

The best place to stay is the Del Ray. You can stay closer but it has never really worked out for me. They have a bar with a casino, and you bring the girls up to your room. It can cost anywhere from 60 to 100 usd.

They have massage type places close to the Del Ray. I have never ventured that far off from the Del Ray. Except once.

I went to the Atlantis. It is largely a strip club like they would have in the USA.

The del ray is where it's at. Approximately 60 dollars a night. I think the cab ride from the airport is 5 or 20 dollars. It is not that great for food, I would not expect that much.

I wouldn't recommend more than 2 or 3 days. I have heard of people staying for extended amounts of time or living there but they get homesick. Then the girls want more time with familia.

with all due respect, the DR is the worst place to stay. The average length of sessions, most have found, are shorter when stayinig at the DR- there is just too much insentive to go down stairs and back to work. Stayinig at the Sportsmans or Amistad, or severa other places, are far better options. Most vets of CR would argue that the DR is NOT where it is at, but an option of last resort, and a place where one needs to have great interview skills to sort through the sharks and clock watchers. There are dozens off MPs, oodles of good stip clubs (Atlantis is a clip joint and a joke, try Le Grillon), and the Sportsmans for far more consistant freelancers..

Venture outside the Del Rey and watch your world expand....

I have taken classes there and highly recommend it. They are very well run, organized and will take care of all your needs. You will be very happy with them and good luck with your Spanish learning. I stayed at Hotel Castillo, a chica friendly hotel, and often walked there in the morning or took bus.

Dick H.

A taxi from the airport to the Hotel Del Rey should run you about $ 20.00.

Most taxis have a meter....called the Maria in Spanish. On a regular short ride in a taxi tell the driver to start the Maria. It should start at 425 colones which is about 75 cents....then your short ride of around 1/2 to 1 mile should not be any more than about $ 2.00.....but coming from the airport from town is about 8 to 10 miles so you will pay more for that trip.

On the longer trips like from airport to town you will want to bargain the price with the driver.....get your best price and then get into the taxi for the trip....if the first driver says $ 25 to 30.00....then go to another taxi....you should find it right around $ 20.00 or maybe less.

From the Hotel Del Rey to the Sportsman Lodge is only about 7-8 blocks and that taxi ride should be no more than about $ 2.00 to $ 2.50.....

The taxis located at the curb in front of the Del Rey will quote you a higher price....so walk up the street towards the Morazon Hotel....one block and flag down a passing taxi....tell him to run the Maria.....and then your fare should be around $ 2.00 or so from in front of the Morazon Hotel to the Sportsmans Lodge.

You can easilywalk from the Hotel Del Rey to the Sportsman Lodge....about 7 blocks..... but only during the daytime....don't walk around much after dark in San Jose.......Taxi's are very cheap and good insurance against getting mugged, or robbed......although I think those things are fairly rare for Gringos in San Jose.

I have made many, many trips to San Jose CR, and was there last week.
I have only been pickpocketed one time and never mugged or robbed or had any other problems ....on the street.

Headsup......

If you are staying at the Del Rey and have a reservation, the hotel does have a free ride to and from the airport....you will need to cal them from the airport and ask if they will come to pick you up.

I even got this free service once when I was heading to the airport and just happened to be leaving from the Del Rey Hotel....I asked, and they said ...no problem....as they assumed I was staying at the hotel....which I had done several days before...but had since moved over to the Morazon Hotel since the Del Rey was all filled up over the weekend....so I got the free shuttle ride from the Del Rey to the airport and then gave the driver ( a Del Rey Hotel employee) a propina...tip of about $ 5.00 for his service. But this was certainly less than the standard $ 20.00 taxi ride to the airport.....

If you are sort of cheap like me....you can also take a bus from the airport to town....and get to the Del Rey or the Sportsmans.

Walk down the short hill in front of the airport and get the bus that stops there...and ask the driver if it goes to San Jose....should cost you about 50 to 75 cents or so.....it will go to the Tunsa (sp) bus stop which is only about one block from the Central street in San Jose....2nd Avenue....you can then get a taxi on over to the Del Rey Hotel for about $ 1.50 to 2.00, which will save you some money instead of taking a taxi all the way from the airport to town.

Last week I took the bus from downtown to the airport....took about 20 minutes and cost less than about $ 1.00.

Do not go to the Coca Cola bus terminal....this is a completely different one...with buses going to Jaco Beach, Quepos, and such.

The last few times I have been to CR I have used Interbus, which is a shuttle van that waits for you at the airport with a sign with your name on it and takes you to your hotel. You can purchase your incoming and outgoing ride online for only $9.50 at this site:

Dick H, The advice from Stevewxly is very good but I think that if this is your first trip and if you do not speak Spanish forget the bus idea.

Also I found that as you come out of the baggage area there is a counter on the left just inside the door leading out. Here you can pay for a taxi to the city. You can pay in dollars and they will allocate the taxi for you. Should be between $20 to $25. Can save you the hassel of trying to bargain outside. Also will save you from getting into a pirate cab. These are unauthorized cabs that hangout around the airport.

Hope you are planning to arrive during the day time.

Just be alert and cautious like you would be in any strange city.

Venice Sam,

I have been on Interbus before on trips from San Jose to Jaco Beach and or Quepos, but was not aware of this trip.......Thanks for the good info Venice Sam. I guess old dogs can learn a thing or two even from Newbies......

This shuttle bus sounds like a very good alternative to taking a taxi from ot to the airport in San Jose. This is the first time I have heard of this service....but I will make a note of it, and try to use it on my next trip.

And yes, this would sure beat the he** out of taking a local bus and then having to lug around all your luggage....which is what I had to do when I took the city bus from downtown SJ to the airport last week on my trip.

$ 9.50 for the price also seems to be very reasonable for this shuttle trip.

One question.....as I just glanced at their website.....is a reservation necessary ????? Or can you call them for pickup when you arrive ?

$ 20. to 25.00 in a taxi is a little high to get from the International Airport to the downtown area.....$ 9.50 is a much better price !

I will save the website and give them a try on my next trip.....

Soft Bob,

I agree with your advice for first time visitors to San Jose......buses to and from the airport are perhaps not ideally suited for unseasoned visitors.......the shuttle service described by Venice Sam sounds like a great deal to me.....and I was not aware that it was available before now......from airport to town....and or reverse. So this info will come in handy on my next trip to CR, as I plan to give this shuttle service a try - coming and going from the airport.

The last time I was picked up by Interbus my plane was about an hour late and they even waited for me. Also, I have been the only one in the van all three times I have used them.

Soft Bob
10-17-09, 23:04
Yes the shuttle bus should be good, I think you have to book in advance unless you see it outside where they have come to pick someone else up.

If you are 2 or 3 persons being picked up from a couple of different flights you may find that you have to wait till they have picked up all the passengers. This could be upto an hour delay but should be acceptable. Also a little extra time dropping others off at different hotels before getting to yours.

Another thing to be aware of is NOT to change money at the arrivals money changing booth at the airport. You get the worst rate in the world. Go upstairs to the bank in the departures area or wait till you are at your hotel.
Keep a few $5 and $1 with you to use till you change money.

Or you could ask someone while you are waiting in the customs/immigration lines or after you clear same if they would like to split the cost of a taxi to downtown.

You could approach anyone but you would probably be more successful if you singled out a solo male traveler to ask.

In the past when I was going to the Dominican Rep I would bring sex toys such as dildos to use as tips. They really enjoyed receiving these things on more than one level. Bringing them in the country was never a problem as no one ever checked my bags. Would this be a good thing to do in Costa Rica?

You might try Mercado Cenral. It's several block with all manner of merchandise. I've never looked for fake coach bags but I'm sure there available. Just wondering if their cheaper abroad than buying them at some flea market back home? Do you have to pay duty on faux items?

Yes the Mercado Central should be a good place to find fake luggage and handbags. Even fake toys and Barbie Dolls. There is no equivalent to our FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and I am sure the shops are flooded with fakes from China. Go into some of the shops along Central Ave. As well on your way to Mercardo Central.

I would like to recommend Dr Sergio Chen in San Jose for dental work. His father was the orginal Dr Chen, who is now retired & of Chinese extraction - and his mother is a native Costa Rican. Dr Chen speaks perfect English also, so communicating with him is very easy.

I had two crowns put on by Dr Chen - two years ago for a very reasonable price - $ 100.00 for each crown. The crowns were a stainless steel core with a porcelain top. Both crowns have since proved to be excellent - no problems at all.

Dr Chen has a modern dental clinic in downtown San Jose, and can usually get you in and your work done in a day or two.
He does everything from crowns, dentures, tooth replacement, bridges, whitening, XRay, dental implants....you name it and he does it well.

Also he has his own laboratory on the top floor of his clinic so he can fit you for what you need, and then usually have the item manufactured that day and ready to install the next day....like crowns.....done in two visits.

His current prices are $ 150.00 for a standard crown and a little more for a Gold Crown if you desire. Full X Rays run about $ 40.00 - I believe.

One of my friends from Ohio recently had him do some dental work on him, and his total was less than $ 1,000.00 USD...but my friend commented that it would have been around $ 6,000.00 to $ 7.000.00 had he had the work done in the USA by an American dentist.

Dr Chen is highly competent and has done work on many, many Americans, Europeans, as well as the local Tico's.

Also Dr Chen is a GEM of a fellow.....I believe he is the most polite, humble & genuine caring medical professional that I have ever met. You will not be disappointed with Dr Chen, nor will you have to pay a great deal of money for his work.

I just broke a tooth this week, and will no doubt need to contact him to schedule another visit to have him repair that tooth. Would probably cost me around $ 800 to 900.00 in the US....he will charge around $ 150.00 for the tooth repair - may need a crown or root canal, or whatever.....I am not sure.
So far I am lucky - as it is not painful and I can probably wait a while before it needs to be fixed.

Was also one of the Dentists I visited before deciding. I found him just as you described. Very nice guy indeed. I only chose Rita and her office because of her Credentials (She teaches twice a month in Miami) and I was a little more impressed with her office and equipment. Dr. Chen was a little cheaper on all procedures but I felt Rita was cheap enough.

Although I am not an expert on this subject - Here is what I know and have experienced: the deal on cell phones for Costa Rica -

They are difficult to get, and are expensive.

I had a rental cell phone a year ago and use it for 90 days while in San Jose. It was rented online and I picked it up when I got to San Jose. I used it for without any problems.
The electric company ICE controls all cell phone usage in CR. Only residents or others with pensionado statas can get a cell phone line, and there are many, many more customers who would like to have a cell phones than there are lines or numbers to go around. So your option is that you will need to buy a new phone ( and they prices are about double of what you would expect to pay in the US/Nicaragua or Panama) and then you will need to find a Tico to sign for it and get it activated for you, or you can just buy a cell phone with a local CR number from a Tico - usually at an inflated price, or lastly you can rent one to use there...... and the price will be more than what would it would be elsewhere.

The rental price is actually not too bad....my phone ran about $ 50.00 a month for the basic service plus about 5 cents per minute for usage. So figure on about $ 75.00 to $ 100.00 a month to get and use a cell phone in Costa Rica. And this would be a basic phone without internet, gps, or any of the other premium services that we are accustomed to having on our cell phones in the US.

It is much more economical to get a cell phone in Nicaragua or Panama - where you can buy a brand new phone for around $ 20.00 and then buy a SIM card for another $ 10.00 to get started. Usage should run around $ 25-35.00 a month in either of those countries- depending upon how much you use the phone.....but cell phones are a whole different deal in Costa Rica.

Every ho you see, of course, has a cell phone because they all have disposable income coming from Gringos......easy come - easy go.
But for the most part - your average CR citizen can not afford a cell phone unless they have it for business or their company pays for it......and most companies there will not do this unless the employee is a higher up executive.

There just isn't any good cheap way to have and use a cell phone in CR......like there is in the other Central American countries.

You can do a search on renting cell phones in Costa Rica prior to leaving your home country for info -

A few more questions:

1) Any gyms in San Jose where I can purchase a week long pass to work out? (weights) near centro preferably or within commutable distance

2) Any recommended one on one spanish instructors? I saw one spanish school online that is close to centro that charges 20 dollars an hour for 1 on 1 instruction. Sounds a bit expensive for central america (1 on 1 instruction in Ecuador was 4 dollars.

3) Any feedback on masseuse Marisol who specialized in massages with HJ at the end who charges 25000 colones? Is that a reasonable price? This is her page: http://costaricamassage.ning.com/

If you want an anwer to your questions, then I think you are going to have to drop the abbreaviations and spell out what you mean.

There are lots of standard abbreavations on Jackson's list...but when I checked it seems that not too many of yours are included on the list......so
unless you want to be SOL on your plans in CR, COL, & BA then please take the time to say what you mean in ' plain English ' - I believe you will get more good responses to your questions that way.

Gearing up to head out next month and I was wondering if I could get help with a few questions I have for all the CR vets:

1) What is most that you would expect to pay on a taxi ride from the airport to your hotel? Do you ask the driver for a "flat rate" or do you go by the meter? Which taxi's should I avoid (if any)?

2) How much could I expect to pay on a taxi ride to and from the Del Rey or Key Largo from Sportmen's Lodge or Hotel La Amistad? Again, should I ask for a flat rate? Or should I go by the taxi meter?

3) I am assuming that when you guys taxi to the MP's you use the meter. Am I correct?

4) MP's: I have never been to an mp before, so I was wondering how it works as far as choosing a chica. Does them MP parade them out all at once for you to select from? Or do they just come out one at a time and you need to write down the name or number of the girl you plan on choosing? Do they come out in lingerie?

Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Most taxi drivers in CR will be honest...but you will find crooks - occasionally- in every occupation. ....so it is a good idea to ask the taxi driver first about the price before getting into a cab for the ride.

I have had taxi guys in CR try to double the normal asking price, simply because they thought I looked 'New' and they figured they could get away with it.

From the international airport in San Jose to downtown - the Del Rey Hotel area - commonly called - " The Gulch " it is a good 13-14 miles .... - so figure on paying about $ 15 to $ 20.00 for this taxi ride - either way.

But that is not to say that if you ask several drivers - you might find that the rate they quote you may be nearer the $ 12 to 13.00 range.

To save money - which I always like to do - I will look for other gringos going from the airport to town and ask if they would like to share a taxi and go for 1/2 price.

It is fairly easy to buddy up with another gringo when arriving at the airport.

You will see them also waiting for a taxi at the front doors of the airport.....just briefly introduce yourself, and ask the guy if he would like to share a ride to town ( to go to your respective hotels)....even if you are staying in different hotels...they price will be the same and you can then save 1/2 the rate.

From the airport I think you will have better luck telling the drivers that you want a flat rate instead of asking them to run the meter.
Running the meter is much better for shorter trips like less than 1 mile or so.

The meter is called 'the Maria' in Espanol - (just like the girls name).

I think if you were on a meter from the airport it might be like way over $ 20.00 depending upon the traffic and the time it took for the trip. The meters are set up to charge for both time and distance....so the exact same ride from say the Del Rey to Sportsman's Lodge or La Amastad Hotel - which is only about 8-9 blocks- might be around $ 2.00 at low traffic time - but then again if you go at 5 or 6 PM - it might cost $ 1.00 to 1.50 more because you will be stuck in traffic waiting for the other cars to move on.....so more time on the meter. The flat rate might be a little cheaper for this trip, and expect to pay a little more coming back....say Sportsman Lodge or La Amastad back to the Del Rey.

The taxi's that set out in front or on the side of the Del Rey Hotel are going to be more expensive....they are parked and waiting for a Gringo fool newbie who will pay anything they say....so better to walk about a half block away from the major hotels like the Del Rey or Presidente to get your cab.

Some taxiistas are official - working for a taxi company...but many are independent who own their own taxis - so there will be differences in prices - just shop around by asking a few drivers their rates from here to there and then take your best deal.

To take a taxi to a massage parlor...it depends on where it is and how far.

If you know it's location....how far, etc. - then perhaps ask for a flat rate....if you do not know how far or where - then perhaps the meter would be best.....except if it is say 8-10 miles distant (way out) then I would ask for the flat rate.

Massage Parlors - They will mostly all be different.....sometimes the girls will be huddled together in a small room....like at the New Fantasy - where you enter and then look them over and then pick one. Of coruse you can also sit down and spend a few minutes talking to any of them to see if you can get a good vibe from any of them before making your choice.....but usually most guys will just choose one of them based upon the girls looks and such.

At Hotel Little Havana - formerly Zona Blue MP - you will go into the bar/lounge where the girls will be sitting on the side on a long bench. You can take your time there picking one out. Have a drink, buy a drink for the lady of your choice and get acquainted first before going back to the private room for your massage.

When going to an MP - I almost always take a few minutes to talk to the gals first so that I can get an idea of their demeanor and attitude before jumping into the sack with them. Some other guys simply go in, pick out a gal in 20 seconds - based entirely upon their looks - and then take their changes.

I like to take some time to get acquainted with them a little first - I guess you could call it an 'interview'. I think if I have employ basic good interview skills, then usually I can make a better choice

Some times they girls might be wearing lingerie but most times they will typically just be wearing their street clothes.....so that differs from place to place also.

Pura Vida, Steve

Thanks for the quick response. I am very much trying to avoid these predators. Which direction do I need to walk in when exiting the Del Rey in order to catch a (non-predatory) taxi then?

Hola SavePros321

You can walk any direction away from the Del Rey to avoid the preditors who hang out outside the Del Rey.

Those predators - we will call them - since you offered the term do not have your best interests at heart.

Those type guys - and yes this is a generalazaztion or stereotype are usually "working" that area for other purposes - and those will include trying to sell you dope, or sex inhancement pills like Viagra or Cialas, or perhaps they would like to take you on 'wild goose type rides' to outlaying strip clubs, where they will no doubt walk you into the door - introduce you to the doorman - so that they can get their 'cut' of what you will spend in the club that evening. These are all well known but avoidable scams, and I can not for the life of me understand why the management of the Del Rey Hotel lets this BS continue to go on - but the hustlers continue their work outside the doors of the Del Rey - 24/7 - and have been at it since perhaps that hotel opened it's doors.

It is a real bummer to have to put up with all that crap from those hustlers, and for me anyway it kind of r'uins the deal'

Stay away and avoid those guys like the plague !!!!!!

In general avoid any guy(s) who comes up to you outside the Del Rey Hotel offering you 'god knows what'....they are all hustlers and and do not have your 'best interests in mind'.

Just walk down the block for 50 or so yards and hail a passing taxi. Simply stand at the curb and hold your hand up in the air. If they are empty and looking for a fare - they will stop for you. Then quickly tell the driver where you want to go, and ask him the fare....either flat rate or ask him to run his meter. If you think his quoted rate is too high, then tell him 'no thanks' and step back to the curb and hail another passing taxi. They pass by this location about every 30 seconds or so - so you won't have any problem in getting one to stop for you......unless it is rush hour...then they may mostly already have fares and then they simply do not stop for you.

If your Espanol is a little lacking - then hopefully you will find a taxi driver that speaks some English.

Really don't worry too much about any of this - as you will catch on quickly as soon as you get there and experience it a few times -

Have fun .........

I run across these types in other countries. Avoid eye contact. I also speak a Middle Eastern Language ( Not Arabic) which tends to turn them off when they tug at your shirt tails.

Great idea.....I sometimes say a few phrases in French - and always tell them - "no Ingles" or "no Espanol" - depending upon the circumstance - when they annoy me on the street. As you said that pretty much 'stops them in their tracks' - if they think you don't understand a word they are saying.

What happens if you accdentally get a chica pregnant while mongering on vacation from the states?

Can the chica track you down in the states?

If you return to Costa Rica years after the incident, and still don't know, can she haul you off to the policia/authorities?

If she gets pregnant, what was the guy doing screwing her withoug a condom? Also, what idiot would give a girl his full name? I imagine that since prostitution is legal in CR, it may not be a occupatinal risk under the law.

I would say she'd have to prove it first. I mean, it highly unlikely that you were the last person she had been with considering that most working girls may see 2-3 punters in one day. And let's not forget her live-in boyfriend or pimp.

To make a long story short: the burden of proof lies with her. I'm sure if it gets too in depth that paternity tests could be done and probably would be far less expensive than if done in the States.

If she won't agree to one then it probably means she was just joking around with you :)

Thank you Steve for the info, that helped a lot!

Thanks!Have known Marisol for several years. She kind of disappered from SL and Del Rey. Very classy working girl. I highly recommend. Great personality, great body for her age (35). Speaks some English. She may have left the business but I doubt it. I have several friends who have been asking about her. Good girl to take out of town.

Just wondering if someone could tell me where the nearest pharmacy is to purchase Viagra and Cialis that is in the vicinity of SL, Hotel La Amistad, etc.?

-What is it's name?

-Does CR have their own version of good generic pills similar to "La Pela" in the Dominican Republic?

there are lots and lots of farmacias - all over san jose. you can hardly walk a block in the business district without bumping into one or two of them. walk around and stop into a few of them and 'do some comparative shopping' for the 'stuff' you want.

one specific farmacia that i have bought the viagra pills in - is directly across the street from the morazon hotel on the north/south street that goes to the morazon park. i can not remember the exact price i had to pay - but i do think i purchased some there - so it must have been a reasonable price.

they almost all carry genuine viagra, cialis, and such drugs, as well as the generic pills. i like the generics for the low price........

i tried some of the generic cialis on my last trip - i bought a couple of them just to try them - but did not see any difference in them from the generic viagra - but yet the cialis cost perhaps 3 times more than the generic viagra.

i like to buy the generic viagra and usually get the 50 mg dose which i feel is right for me. some guys opt for the 100 mg dose - but i think that is too heavy for me... the 100 mg dosage tends to make me light headed and somewhat dizzy after......so it sort of scared me - as i thought i was having some sort of bad reaction from taking the higher 100 mg dose.

anyway the generic viagra is cheap, and there is no prescription needed to purchase it in costa rica.

best bet -
ask for the generic viagra - then ask if there are any 'two for one specials" - where you get a 2 pill pack but only pay for one pill.....or the 4 pill pack - which seems to be a very popular size.

the specific name for generic viagra is - sidenafil calox or sidenafil citrate - and i believe these two pills are exactly the same.

i have found the 50 mg generic viagra for about $ 1.60 -$ 2.00 per pill before - in many drug stores in san jose.

the touts outside the del rey will be selling it for $ 10.00 to 20.00 per pill.....but you know they are crooks- so stay away from them.

on my last trip this last october i bought about 20 of the 100 mg viagra pills because the 50's were not available at my first stop.....later i found some 50 mg viagra pills in a different store- so i told a couple of the touts i had them, and would sell them ( the 100 mg's) and did sell them my remaining stock to them (which i felt were too strong for me) for about $ 4.00 per pill.......so i made a buck or two off them.....and naturally they would be reselling them for the higher price - but i simply wanted to get rid of them at that point.

shop around for them (the pills) as the price will fluxuate from one farmicia to the next. the $ 1.60 to $ 1.75 price - per 50 mg dose is perhaps the cheapest that i have found in san jose.

if all you can find is the 100 mg dose - then you can easly break this pill in half and only take half at a time.

in smaller towns in costa rica you may have to pay more for them.

also i shopped around for them in panama city and found that the asking price there was double or more for the same pill as was the going price in costa rica. so naturally i waited until i got back to costa rica to purchase my needed supplies.

i have brought quite a few - say 25-40 of these viagra pills back with me on the flight from cr to the usa, and have never been asked about them or had any problems with customs on them.......although rush limbaugh the tv personality did get caught entering the country (us) with some of them - and he got busted for it....but in general i do not think you should have any problem bringing some of them back with you to the us......worst case scenario would be that they would perhaps confirep001e them at customs, but i doubt that you would face any criminal charges for that.....but again i am not advising you to do that - you will be on your own with that- should you get caught.

Thanks once again Steve for the information. I've also found that 100mg is too much and takes me longer to "bust" (this may have also have been because I was taking "La Pela" (DR's version of Cialis) and 100 mg viagra in tandem; not knowing the difference between the two, lol!) so all the 100mg Viagra's I've ever had I just bite in half (don't have a pill spliter) and it seems to be enough.

I think I am going to give Cialis a try this go around as they are supposed to remain in effect for 24hrs.

I believe that Cialis is supposed to be effective for up to 36 hours, but for the greater difference in price over the generic viagra - I just can not justify paying the much higher price.

I believe if you are drinking while using the sexual inhancement pills that will also have an effect on you too.....but I am not a drinker so can not swear to that.

I have always brought lots of leftover Viagra back from the DR without any problems. I just put it in the luggage that goes under the airplane. Anyone who's ever had to go through customs at MIA International knows that they don't F around. But I have brought back V twice to the states without any problems. Is there any reason at all to convert your $USD's into CRC's? I know that most chicas quote you in dollars and will take them as payment at the Del Rey and Key Largo, but what about taxis, mp's, restaurants, etc.? Is it better to use Colon's for these?

Is there a preferred place for getting Colon's? Believe it or not Western Union and the ATM's had the best exchange rates in Sosua...

Stevewxly

I have always found that it is somewhat easier to pay with colones than dollars almost everywhere in Costa Rica.

There are places like hotels, restaurants and such that will take dollars but I think you will get a better deal with colones simply because it is easier for the person or clerk to deal with them than figuring out what you owe in dollars.

Get your money into colones - make a simple chart that you can refer to and keep it handy in your pocket, when making a purchase, and go from there.

I have made many, many trips to Costa Rica and usually change most of my dollars with the cashier at the Del Rey Hotel. Their rate will be fair and up to date. You might do a little better at a local bank in San Jose but it takes too much time to go to the bank, stand in line, fill out forms, check your passport, etc just to get change in colones....much more convienent (sp) just to do it at any of the major hotels or casinos like the Del Rey, Morazon, etc.

I've also gotten colones through the ATM by the front desk, using my Bank of America debit card and got a good rate. Last, for a good wallet sized cheat sheet, go to "oanda.com". Use colones for the little things and meals as they will give you a lower rate than you'd get elsewhere in change. Also, if you go to bigger places, they'll give you the bill in both colones and dollars.

How do you interview the ladies? How do you ask for things like price, bbbj, CIM, showering, etc. Any phrases or words to know would be great.

Thanks, or as you guys seem to say, Pura Vida!

If this is your first trip to Costa Rica....you will no doubt want to make the Hotel Del Rey in San Jose your 'ground zero'. Hell you may get there and stay in that place the whole damned time...... I know I was like that on my first trip. I didn't want to leave the place to even look anywhere else.....except maybe to take an hour break to go someplace else to eat.

So......have no fear.....almost all the girls working at the Del Rey, Key Largo (next door), the Sportsmans Lodge, or a couple of the more notorious massage parlors will speak enough English so you will not need to use much Spanish when conversing with them.

They will know what you desire, and you can easily bargain with them in English.....so really one can go there without knowing a single word in Spanish, and still have a good trip. Plenty of guys have done that in the past.

Just remember one rule - ' no cien ' - which in Espanol means - do not pay $ 100.00 to get laid.....bargain with them - and you will find that they will usually accept a lot less....like $ 50-60.00. ( And this would be with the gals at the Hotel Dey Rey.....they all want to make $ 100.00 a pop....but only stupid guys do this....newbies....who simply don't know any better.

And when a inexperienced guy does fork over a hundred bucks to a gal - this makes it extremely difficult for the rest of us - who are trying to keep the price down to a reasonable level. so when they quote you "cien" ( $100.00) - simply smile and say 'no thanks' - then you can began to bargain them down to the 'real price'.

If that does not work for you then find a taxi driver and ask him to take you to one of the many, many massage parlors where the going rate will be much less - like $ 25-30.00 a pop. The massage parlors are a much better bargain that ' getting take out from the Del Rey.

Really I hang out there ( the Del Rey) and 'watch the show'....window shopping - if you will - then when I am ready to 'do the deed' - I will hop onto a bus and head for one of the numerous massage parlors, where your money will go much further.

Speaking Espanol or Not -

Not knowing Spanish - is one side of the coin....the other side is that plenty of guys can speak very passable Spanish and can do well with it with the ladies. But it is not at all necessary to know much Spanish to go and have a good time in Costa Rica.

Just get the money conversion right....make a little chart to keep in your pocket.....and use your head......the 'big head' and you will do OK.

Others may say that you need to speak some Spanish to have a successful trip....but from my experience I don't think so...... Speaking and understanding Spanish is desirable, but if you don't - you can still have a great time. It might help to buddy up with another seasoned gringo once you get there....maybe you will make the acquaintance of another CR veteran who will 'show you the ropes'.

I did this on my first trip.....I ran into another fellow who knew the drill. He helped me a whole bunch....guiding me around, telling me what to expect, how to do it, where to go, etc. ......now after having made several trips 'down South' for about 7-8 years I can speak enough Spanish to get along fairly well.

If you decide to move there (CR) and set up residence you will want to learn the local language...but for trip uno - don't worry too much about it - you will do fine.

Hola,

I agree fully......one can go anywhere and most everywhere in San Jose CR - time permitting - to sample the 'local delicacies”. '

I was merely pointing out the obvious - and that is that most guys especially if it is their first trip to CR will no doubt find their way to the Del Rey Hotel - and will want to stay around there just to take in ' the floor show '. And they may find it hard to drag themselves away from the place - once they get there.

I have a friend who goes to San Jose a few times a year and he alway stays at the Del Rey, and eats most of his meals across the street at the restaurant owned by the Del Rey, and perhaps does not move more than a block away from that location for the duration of his trip....except for coming from, and going back to the airport for his trip home.

I on the other hand have been to CR many, many ties but I have traveled around the whole country - which I think is a more viable alternative to just stay in San Jose for the whole trip. I feel that I have seen more and done more things than others who simply get into the 'gulch' and seldom leave to check out other areas.

It - the HDR does not need to be their headquarters - as they can do that anywhere - like differing hotels to stay in. My point was that a newbie will perhaps find it difficult to leave the confines of the gulch and venture forth to find other interesting spots. Many do, of course, but also many, many guys get into the Del Rey - find it to be a paradise and don't want to leave.

I love to go there ( HDR) to look around....see and be seen - but seldom will I take a gal from there just because I know lots of other spots like - Hotel Little Havana - formerly the Zona Blue MP - New Fantasy, etc. where the pickings are almost just as good, and the prevailing price is usually less.

I've been going to CR for many years and avoid the Del Rey.

The meat market scene ain't my cup of tea.

I know that these questions have been asked before and I do sift through the forum but I only find parts of the answers. Here are my main questions.

Which Massage Parlors are the best dollar for dollar and looks ones to go to? And will all taxi drivers know these spots?

I think the whole forum gets that Del Ray is the spot so no need to talk about it and Sportsman Lodge. Are there any other places with girls inside waiting around like anxious puppies at pet store to be picked up?

Is there a street walker scene in San Jose? If so. Which streets? And How much to pay.

What is the general cost of a taxi to run you around town?

What is the cost of a taxi to take you from the airport and the Del Ray area?

Sorry to be bold, but these are the questions I would LOVE to know the answers to. I have talked with a few guys via PM and they are very very helpful but maybe a big post like this would help a few of us out. AND I will be there jan 20 to jan 25. So if anyone else is a newbie. Come on lets grab a beer and figure it out. If your a seasoned monger of the area. I'll buy you a few beers and you show me your knowledge. And of coarse. I'll come back here and report all the goodies.

not all taxi drivers will know where these places are, and they may get a cut from the owner which will impact the fare if they do. i normally don't frequent these places so can't tell you which one is better than the other. suggestion: go to don gringo's web site and download his map of casas and mp's in the sjo area. it is a lot of fun to do a walking tour during the day since, if i recall, there are dozens of places on the map: from the low end to the high end, he even had a topless stylist at a barber shop that would give a bj in the back room for a rediculously low price, but not sure if she's still in business. quality of chicas will very, but half the fun is mining for gold right?

there is a street walker scene in sjo, but it's best to avoid at all costs. sw's fall into three catagories of which, in my opinion, are all bad. 1. ****. 2. a chica banned from the dr/key largo and/or the monger hotels for a host of reasons i. e. theft, loco attitude or disease. and 3. transvestite.

cab fare around the gulch and centro is not more than 1000 colones ($2). going further out to roemosuer, the university area or sabana park is around 3-4 thousand colones. further like escasu or the mountains negotiate before getting into the cab.

taxi fare from the airport to the gulch is around $20us or 10k crc.

There are other pick up bars, Sportsman's is one of the best. My advice is go to the Del Rey and just talk to random gringos, you'll run into a vet eventually and he can perhaps even show you around.

Have fun good luck.

I think I will be fine bouncing around checking things out. Imma check out some of the things on that guys website that was referenced here. But it may be a little outdated. Who knows.

LAST QUestion. Which hotel to stay at? I prefer cheaper. But I will pay more if it is totally worth it. SPortsman or Del Ray? Or is there another gem I don't know about? Sportsman appears to be 30 bucks or so cheaper. Am I missing something.?

Things that are important are A/C, a safe, and general good location. And I'm not a big fan of paying extra money to bring a girl back. I'll be in town Jan 20 to 26 if anyone cares to grab a beer.

Hope to hear a good hotel recommendation.

Hotel Castillo is where I always stay. Very safe and just a block from Sportsman and a short cab ride to the Del Rey. You can also walk to the two massage parlors close by in the day time.

George,

You won't go wrong by booking and staying at the Hotel Castillo, Sportsmans Lodge, or La Amastad.....all three meet your qualifications, and are all good places to stay.

Pricewise - the Castillo should be about $ 45-50.00; La Amastad - about $ 50.00; and Sportsmans Lodge - starting at about $ 60.00.....& up to $ 100.00 for the premium rooms.

If you want to stay CHEAP - check out the Hotel Nuevo Johnson near the Central Market in San Jose. About $ 12.00 a night - it is do-able, but not nearly so nice and comfortable as the other three above.

Inflation - Gringo Style

A year ago - I stayed at the Morazon Hotel ( and it with an O not an A ) for a couple of days for $ 35.00 a night.

Prices have gone up at the Del Rey- Sportsman's, and Castillo - that I know of - so now it seems that the Morazon Hotel is charging $ 60.00 a night - according to Fuddzie's report.

Next thing you know the P4P gals at the Del Rey will be asking $ 150.00 for a one hour pop.

Any agencies that can be recommended that rent out apartments in the HDR area? Flying in next week

4 of us are flying in together and we would like to stay in 1 place or the best alternative. So we would like to get 2 two bedrooms, as opposed to getting 4 single rooms at one of the hotels, like Amistad, Morazon or Castillo, which would be our back up option.

Please contribute your advice.

Thanks much

and I looked at the website of the Hotel Aranjuez which he recommended and things looked pretty good until I reached this section under "Useful Information" and found this!

Are visitors allowed at Hotel Aranjuez?

Hotel Aranjuez is a familiar(?familial) hotel. Many families with their children stay with us every day. For that reason, not registered visitors are (?not) allowed in the rooms at anytime. You can always receive your visitors in the common areas.
Please remember (?not) to speak in loud voice after 10 p.m. in the social areas and to loud(?turn) down the volume of your television after that time. (Sorry for the "proof reading" as I am in the "learn English" business and some habits are hard to break!)

Hence, if a monger's chosen venues for some ST "company" are the Blue Marlin, Sportsmens Lounge and Key Largo bars, looks as the only option is to find a "hot sheet hotel" in the area!(or possibly, to bribe the reception clerk(s)!

Hope this helps!

Unless you have a family friend offering you a position before you arrive, I would not count on it.

Locals who earn good money are perfectly bilingual, young, university graduate, and hungry. And even then the salaries are not up to Gringo standards of pay.

IMHO, retiring here is one thing, earning a living quite another.

Enjoy

I would imagine there are other cities in CR that has a nitch, albeit smaller, for mongers besides San Jose and Jaco.In Costa Rica there is an expression, which translates to "small town big hell".

San Jose is a place where a girl can spend the day in town working as a daytime prostitute and come home in the afternoon and tell everyone in her barrio and family that she is a secretary.

That can't happen in a small town.

The sex scene is in the city. If you live in the suburbs or small town then you should have plenty of ass to choose from, however you will have to do it the old fashioned way, which is to romance it.

If just don't have any MPs in the countryside.

Right On Bro -

From my own personal experience from many trips to Central America - I can concur with this line of thinking......" small town, big hell ".

I know that many of the gals who work the Del Rey and other venues in San Jose will go to Jaco Beach and then work the places there like the Beatle Bar.

But you will be hard pressed to find a local gal born, raised and with family in Jaco, who will want to expose herself by working as a P4P gal in her own backyard....with San Jose being the exception - as I guess it is big enough for the gals to be sex workers there and without getting noticed by other members of her family.

Even though prostitution is legal in CR, there seems to be a stigma attatched to the work - so the the local gals do not want their family to know what they are up to.

So even though she tells them(family) that she is working as a secretary or clerk somewhere - truth be known, she is perhaps engaged in the sex industry and and the last thing she wants is for her family to find out about it.

If you have not been to CR, you better plan on going now. A woman is up 20 points in the elections (40 year old lady that married a previous president that is now 80 + years old).

She is going to make prostitution illegal. Her first target is closing the Delray in San Jose.

Go figure! She marries a man 40 years older and she isn't a hooker! Woman have short term memories, they forget where they came from fast. That's why you leave them where you find them and most importantly do not marry them.

I have seen a number of chumps bring them back to the states. Before they get to the states, they are already a typical American woman.

Right now a woman has to wait a year to bring a deadbeat dad to court. My X had to put gas in the police car in Jaco to finally get them to serve papers to him. That took about 6 months and he was able to hold off giving her any money for about another year. He paid her 1 month and stopped again and she had to go thru the whole process again. I don't condone a man not supporting his children, these are not men. A real man does what he has to do, regardless of his relationship with his x. But we fucked up this country. I love the way the latin country men are in control.

San Jose and Jaco Beach are not the only cities with P4P business in Costa Rica. Almost any town of any size to have a few stores, hotels, restaurants, bars, or other businesses will have some gals in the P4P trade. I could start naming towns where I have mongered in CR ( quite a few) - but there is really no need for that - as you can find it almost anywhere throughout CR. Some venues will be much greater than others of course - as is the case in San Jose - big city - lots and lots of people - many gals who want or need to engage in the sex trade to make a living.

.........

On the woman running for President of CR - wanting to make prostitution illegal - I have not heard anything about that - seems highly unlikely that would come to pass though.

Laura Chinchilla is the presidential candidate you all are bemoning.
She is Anti Monger.
My question to her is where is she going to come up with new jobs that the 9000 +/- reguistered punta's can work at to support there children, dead beat boyfriends, landlords, restaurants and shoe salesmen in the style they have become accustom?

"Meanwhile, Laura Chinchilla, the front runner and candidate for the Partido Liberación Nacional, says she is bringing criminal charges for defamation against her nearest competitor, Otto Guevara of Movimiento Libertario. His party published a notice questioning where Ms. Chinchilla got the money to own a house in the posh Villareal section high on a hill above Santa Ana.

Ms. Chinchilla took a television crew on a tour through the two-bedroom home Wednesday and said she is paying on two mortgages. Despite the number of bedrooms, the home is very upscale. Guevara calls her criminal complaint a smokescreen. He has been criticized for receiving money from places that have not been identified clearly."

i had his card here on my computer desk but it's loaded up with junk - so can't find it now. you can do a search on google for dr chen.

i had two crowns done there and the were $ 100.00 each in 2008. he has gone up a little since then - but still very good quality work for an inexpensive price.

Laura Chinchilla Miranda was one of Óscar Arias Sánchez two Vice-Presidents and the Administration's Minister of Justice. She is currently running for President in Costa Rica's 2010 elections. As of September, 2009 she was the frontrunner. On November 28th, 2009 Laura Chinchilla Miranda became Costa Rica’s only main party candidate to participate and voice support for a controversial march dubbed “March for Life & Family”. Organized by a coalition of church leaders, its stated mission conflated opposition to the legalization of abortion and granting civil recognition for homosexual couples. Laura Chinchilla Miranda’s participation has raised concerns among several Costa Rican civil and human rights leaders who have regarded the event as pandering to fundamentalism and homophobia. Laura Chinchilla Miranda has stated that the march was not “against any group”.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a moral majority conservative who has power to make changes if she becomes president. If she wins, I believe our hobby days will be numbered.

Sadly for CR but probably 50% of the people I see in the airport or plane are here for the girls or its a nice added bonus to a trip. Lets face it, if sex stops...all casinos will plumit, and a few major hotels will lose tons of money which im sure is keeping San Jose Taxes nice and fluffy.

As VP she enacted that casinos close down at 5:30 a.m. and not reopen until 3 p.m., based on her theory that casinos promote prostitution. Yes, she look's to be bad news for the trade. Need to get in as many pops as I can next month, lol.

Although Laura Chinchilla has a commanding lead over her opponents in the presidential elections to be held on February 7th, the latest opinion poll predicts she lacks the necessary votes to win a first round. For any one candidate to take the elections on February 7th, he or she must obtain at least 40% of the votes. If no one candidate obtains the 40%, the top two must then face a run off election on April 4th. However there is still plenty of time for the candidates and parties to sway the almost 35% of the eligible voters who are yet undecided. Chinchilla has dropped almost 10% since the last November.

She isn't all that bad looking for a 50 years old. I think that she should be invited to the Del Rey/Sportsman and discover for herself how clean, safe and well run the place is. In addition, in exchange for a ride up the elevator she might pick up contributions from mongers/tourists who contribute to 65% of their economy. Regardless of country, prostitution and gambling on the street has never been safe.

There is a section on how to decipher common abbreviation on this forum - you should perhaps learn to use it.

Meantime - HDR stands for the Hotel Del Rey - perhaps the busiest and best combo hotel, casino, and brothel (more or less) in Central America.

ZB stands for Zone Blue - which has now been renamed Hotel Little Havana.
(With your Cuba visit - that spot might appeal to you - check it out - it's a combo hotel, bar, and brothel also - although much smaller than the HDR.

The city in Costa Rica with the best looking girls is a little more difficult to name = per se - but perhaps most guys would agree that it would probably be San Jose - simply because there are more available girls there than any place else in Costa Rica.

Go and get some experience in CR and hope if you do you have a great trip.

And I would be very interested in a report about your time in Cuba - when you return. There is not too much available about Cuba for several reasons....mostly being that I believe it is still against the law for US citizens to go to Cuba. Hopefully that will change soon ..........

Looking to be in CR for 9 days. 1st 4 days in San Jose.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other towns that offer good mongering experiences? I've heard Puntarenas might have possibilities, is this true?

Please respond with your other recommendations.

David,

Puntarenas does have a few mongering possibilities. I have been there a few times - stayed a couple of days - and did manage to find some local action. One of my old girlfriends lived there, so I would go there to see her occasionally.

It is a old Banana Plantation town, but after the Banana Company left town several years ago - the town started looking kind of shaby with the cleanliness and upkeep not what it used to be in the prosperous days.

There is a giant pier there and the cruise ships still stop there overnight - but I really don't know why - as the ships do not take anything on like fuel or supplies there, and the cruisers certainly would not be missing anything at all if the ships kept on going or stopped somewhere else.

So Puntarenas is a possibility, but there are better spots where I would go if I had the chance.

Jaco Beach would be a much better choice for mongering. It is fairly close to San Jose - can be reached in about 3 hours via bus (cheap) and has a nice beach vibe to the town. The actual beach is not too clean or pretty though, so don't expect it to be such.

There are several good mongering places in Jaco with the premier place being the Beatle Bar. Lots of good restaurants - from cheap soda's to high end places - so you can take your pick. Lots of hotels too - again some very reasonable for around $ 20.00 a night up to the fancy places - depending upon your budget.

Quepos CR and Manual Antonio would be another possibility for you. I've spent time there (was there one time for 30 days). Beaches much nicer there, but it's a very small town with limited mongering going on - but still a few locals and maybe even a few imports from the Dominican Republic, or Panama being found there.

Other than in San Jose - mongering in the rest of Costa Rica can be kind of spotty.

This is not to say that you can not find what you want in other places in CR - so spend your alloted time in SJ then get out to some of the other towns and see some of the country while you are there.

Too many guys who go to CR - spend all there time in about a 3-4 block area of San Jose - in what is called - "Gringo Gulch" and never have the opportunity to see anything at all of the rest of the country. And the country is very diverse and very beautiful if you take the time and make the effort to go see it.

Good Luck

The Morazon Hotel is centrally located in the "gulch" and is OK. Rooms are OK, and everything is fairly clean & nice.......but their rates have recently gone up to over $ 40.00 a night or so.....could be as much at $ 50.00 - depending on where and how you make your reservations - and for that kind of money I would much prefer to stay at the Hotel Castillo or the Dunn Inn Hotel - which are both located about 5 blocks North of the Hotel Del Rey....within walking distance.

For a little more - about $ 60.00 - you can get into the Sportsmans Lodge - but prior reservations are a must - as they fill up quickly.

Stayed there last month. $60 nite including taxes. Very clean, great staff and 3 min walk from Del Rey.

Again.......for $ 60.00 a night range - I would opt for the Hotel Castillo ( $ 50.00 for CASH) or Sportsmans Lodge- starting at $ 60.00....both way better than the Morizon Hotel in my opinion. Or perhaps the Dunn Inn Hotel - around $ 40.00.

(( 7-8 months ago the special rate for cash at the Morizon Hotel was around $ 35.00 a night - but then they remodeled the casino, moved the restaurant up to the second floor, raised prices about double for the food in the restaurant and raised rates for the hotel about 40 %. The only good deal left at the Morizon is the Lunch Buffet special for about $ 3.00 - but it has probably gone up by now too. ))

Another hotel choice a little farther out would the Royal Dutch Hotel and Casino.
It is on 2nd Ave. around the Central Market - Marcado Central - about a $ 2.50 taxi ride from the Del Rey....or if walking - about 8-10 blocks.

Their regular rates are about $ 49.00 a night....but if you will get there in the afternoon or early evening and talk to one of the guys at the desk - they will give you a $ 40.00 a night special price for CASH.

If you talk to the young lady desk clerk - she will quote you a $ 50- 60.00 price range. She will not tell you about the special CASH price....like the guys will.

i'm traveling to costa rica sometime this spring, probably may. plan to visit many of the pensions and will report my experiences.

i have two questions:

1. where is the best place to buy cuban cigars in san jose? i've heard there are lots of fake cubans. i'm guessing some of the folks in this forum are cigar lovers.

2. how do i make sure the girl of the proper age? i like younger girls, but absolutely, positively do not want to hook up with an **** girl. i've read that some of the pensions don't check the girl's age and the monger can get in big trouble. is there some sort of official picture id?

thanks in advance. i will repay with full reports and pictures.

most all the reported cuban cigars sold on the street by touts are counterfeit...well all of them...beware of that scam. the cigars look fairly good, the boxes look good...even the "official seals" on the boxes could pass...but those cigars are made locally and are bogus...not real cubans.

there is a good little cigar store that is about 1 block north from the el presidente hotel..half way between the pres. and the morazon hotel..same street. the have a good selection of genuine cuban cigars. plus they also have some very good cigars made in cr or other central american countries, which are almost as good as the cubans but less in price.

the cubans are high...but i guess you get what you pay for with that.

on the proper age for the girls...it is 18 years....you won't have to worry too much about that if you stick with the regular places like - hotel del rey, sportsmans lodge, or most of the larger massage parlors....as they all check the girls cedula (credentials) when she enters their establishment.

if you pickup a streetwalker - then that is where you would need to be concerned with getting an ****d girl or perhaps at any of the small bars where girls work out of - all over the city of san jose...be careful there.

regular working girls will have a cedula, and most of them would or could show it to you....many may not want to do that...as they want their privacy protected...but they have them.

non-pros or younger girls just starting out....may not yet have a cedula (hope i've spelled that correctly).

in general it is not a big problem in costa rica though.......

enjoy - steve

Hi,

I'm contemplating a "first time" trip to Costa Rica. Would probably use San Jose as a base. Want to both see women and also do tourist stuff. I'd probably spend about a week to 10 days.

Is TACA Air generally the best way to fly into Costa Rica from SFO? Thanks in advance. I did a search on mobissimo, expedia, etc. But figure some of you veterans know the bigger picture.

I also see the debates about where to stay. I'll save that for another thread and day. I guess it's "to Del Rey" or to "not Del Rey? ".

Thanks for any info.

I check for flights on trip advisor. www.Tripadvisor.com

The cheapest and most conveint flights from SFO are on Frontier airlines. Around $540. I have not flown on TACA but am tempted to try them.

The plus on TACA is that you get to San Jose in the early morning and the total flying time is about 8 hours with a stop in San Salvador. Returning is a little longer but you go through customs only when you get back to SFO.

The negatives are you get to SFO at midnight and the fare is around $620.

Continental used to have good flights through Houston but now they seem to have flights that all arrive in San Jose at night. Cost around $640 too.

I like to arrive in SJ in the day time with a return flight leaving around noon and getting to SFO by 10 pm at the latest so I can catch a BART ride home.

Best to get there in the day especially as a first timer.

Redfield,
If TACA has a direct flight, it's probably a good bet. I haven't flown them in years, because I like the FF miles with AA. With timing I've gotten some good prices with AA out of Florida, and a handful of free trips, too.
It's probably just me, but it's never Del rey after my first trip some 12 years ago. I made it simple during that trip by staying there, but there are several options if you are going with a friend. Good luck.

Soft Bob

There are no direct flights from SFO to San Jose. Frontier Airlines has the best price at present.

TACA is the quickest and you do not have to go theough customs till you return to SFO. The drawback is you get back SFO at midnight.

I have not used this airline though.

Try to book a flight that gets you to San Jose in the day time especially on your first visit.

I liked Continental but they are now more expensive than both Frontier and TACA.

Yes, I've RTFF, but stl want to ask advice on where to stay and go given:

1. I will be flying from SFO to Costa Rica for the first time. (experienced in many other Asian countries) for about 7-9 days in the late October/early Nov. Timeframe.

2. I'd like a mix of mongering and touristy things. Touristy by day. Girl at night.

3. Decent, mid priced hotel. Safe. Can travel some but if day trips will do the trick for a first timer, that's fine.

4. Should I just stauat the Del Rey or go somewhere cheaper and hit the DR at night?

5. Thanks for any big or small picture tips you can give.

You may find the Del Rey too raunchy and dingy for your taste. Also they charge $10 for each girl you take to your room. That can soon add up.

There is a very nice hotel called the Dunn Inn about 10 min. walk from the DR.It has a mixture of mongers and eco-tourists. Also on friday afternoon there is a gathering of newbies in the bar who can meet veteran mongers and get lots of info on the various clubs/massage parlors and girls and prices. Easy to meet people too. Their website also lists day tours you can take.

The main man to talk to there is called Boyd. Go to their website and see what you think. No extra girl fees here. rooms are reasonably priced. They also do airport pickup I think. www.hoteldunninn.com

In the night if you go to the DR for a girl take a taxi back do not walk. Should cost $2 or $3 but never walk at night.

Be aware of potential construction noise, as they are building a casino right next door. Rooms toward the front of the hotel might be reasonably quiet.

Should I bring any nice clothes or are blue jeans fine? I don't plan to go to any fancy restaurants or any place nice. I'm sure the MPs couldn't care less, but what about the gringo places like Del Ray, Sportsman, or New Fantasy? I'd like to pack light, so I'd rather not bring dress clothes unless it makes a difference.

Also, has anyone taken a Spanish language class in CR? I am trying to learn Spanish (very difficult for me) and I'm thinking about taking a one week Spanish class while I'm there.

Just bring your US currency and then convert to Colones once you get to CR.

You will probably have to "take a real bath"....getting fleeced if you try to convert to Colones before leaving the US.

Better yet....load up your checking account at home with cash, and then have a debit card for it...tell your bank beforehand that you will be going to Central America and they should expect withdrawls for you there....just so they know you card has not been stolen or comprimised....they have to know this before you leave.........that way you only take out as much as you need for that one day from any ATM machine in CR....and they are all over the place.......then get more the next day from the ATM.

ATM typically charge only $ 1.00 for a withdrawal.......I've done this for 8 years...and the debit card is the best way to go.

Pick pockets and thieves are fairly common in Cen. America....many people are dirt poor and will do anything to make ends meet.

If you take a lot of cash and lose it....then your trip is pretty much ruined....at least it would be for me.

Take US currency with you. Most places accept US dollars. The exchange rate is 500+ colones to the dollar. Take a small calculator if you want to be exact or just divide by 500 or tell the guy behind the counter you want to pay in US dollars and let hm do the math ( I would double check his math skills).

Inchfury, Listen to Stevewxly, he knows what he's talking about. Always pay in local currency, I strongly advise against using USD in Costa Rica. You will get fleeced if converting to CRC in the states and at the airport in SJO. Best is to use a debit card from your local bank and notify them, before you leave, of the exact dates and location you will be out of the country. Also, go to www.oanda.com and print an Fx Cheat Sheet for Travelers, laminate it and keep in your pocket. There are a few good ATM and cambio locations in the gulch that are safe and offer good conversion rates. The Colonial next to the Del Rey, Hotel Presidente and the Kiosk past McDonald's on Ave Centrale. Also, remember, you will need $26 US for departure tax.

Casino Colonial is a great fast place to change dollars into colones. They even give a better rate than the bank with zero waiting time...$100 limit per day.

I disagree that paying in dollars is a bad idea. Just state the going rate or don't buy the item if they quote you a bad rate. Colones would probably be more convenient though.

My friend and I would like to check the usual spots but want to hit a strip club up for his birthday. He is very picky and likes 8-10's, so no fat chix. We saw TANGO INDIA's website, they look official and D'Pleufo, i think that is how you spell it. Any word on these of recent activity. Or can someone point us in the right direction. It will be our first time in CR, and we don't want it to be our last!

Sorry first of all if this is redone, but me and my friend are traveling down there for the first time and plan on visiting all the regular places. My other question is though we wish to visit a strip club and I know that they are not the best place for your dollar but 2 have come to mind. The first is D'pleufeos and the other is Tango India.

From what I have read is that d'pleufeos is more bang for your buck and that Tango India is a rip off. Though in the pictures TI looks very upscale and the women seem to be more classy but is it worth it. Any reviews or other strip clubs your think would be better would be appreciated. Also I need a atm that will allow me to draw out more then 100 dollars daily.

Thanks

Re strip clubs: Tango India is a rip-off! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! What you have read is true. If you actually want to get laid on site without getting gouged and have a decent time, I'd check out Pantera Rosa or Le Grillon. Haven't been to either in over a year (strip clubs ain't my scene), but some friends of mine go there occasionally and generally enjoy themselves. You have a decent chance of encountering some attractive ladies.

Re ATMS, good info was just provided by Artisttyp. The ATM at the Casino Colonial (next to the Del Rey) is indeed fair and reliable, as are the 2 ATMS at the DR. The amount you can draw out is determined by your bank, not the ATM, up to a point. I have drawn out $500 a pop from both locations.

Hola fellow mongers. New guy here. I have RTFF for some time now, but will soon be in a position to contribute as well. This fall I intend to spend a month or more south of the US, most likely in a Spanish immersion class whilst partaking of the local culture (heh). What I am looking for is a place where the cost of living is low(ish), the monger scene is prolific and the amateur scene is fair to good and good diving water is not too far away. Just a couple quick questions for those who know.

- Does anyone have a good recommendation regarding a particular Spanish immersion course? There are plenty online, and plenty that are given by reputable universities. What I am looking for are any personal experiences, bad or good, that will give me further information.

- From what I understand, the cost of living in CR is about medium for Central America, the monger scene is very good and the amateur scene is bad to non-existent. Is this about right?

You will perhaps like it in Costa Rica....lots of gals.....and if you pick them correctly and at the correct venue....you will not have to pay them $ 100.00 an hour.

The non-pro's are there too....but you need to have "game"...be sort of young, and attractive, and most of all need to be more or less conversant in Spanish.

Take your Spanish courses before going...then you will be all set for things in Central America.

Also be careful about taking Spanish courses once you get there....especially the ones from small private firms.........perhaps from a university would be lots better........there are some good ones, and some that are just plain rip-offs for gringos.....ie....they are more interested in taking your money than teaching you anything.

But they will teach you to be more cautious ..... for the future.

If this is your first time in Costa Rica, or you are like my Friend A and require aesthetically pleasing surroundings to feel comfortable or look at things only on face value you will totally misunderstand this country and its people. Costa Rica IS NOT and I repeat IS NOT a third world country. You could classify it as a second tier developed country. They have a good dependable public transportation system which is actually run by several privately owned bus companies (www.tuasa.com) based in Spain. The Government regulates development and purposely makes development difficult to protect the environment. The country gets 100% of its electricity from Hydro power. Costa Rican culture is not really concerned with aesthetics and it shows. Other than old government buildings built by the Spanish, Churches, and homes built by the wealthy building are designed to be functional and efficient. Cosmetics are not very important. Even to dressing and appearance, comfortable and casual is the norm. When going to work, out on the town, or special occasions Costa Rican are casually dressed. Unless their job requires a uniform to clearly identify their position or function. Since most of you will be at the HDR the casino dealer have their uniform, the casino servers wear black, security wears all black suits and management wears blue or white shirts (most do not wear ties). Even at the banks, other than the Manager most employees dress business casual everyday. The reason I get into this is to get readers to understand that the chicas here are NOT backwards uneducated people. This country has a literacy rate higher than USA. Costa Rican Government places a high value on education and it is reflected in their budget and the fact that most Costa Ricans are college educated. In RTFF I notice many comments in regards to the level of income the average Tico would have in relation to what tourist would have. DO NOT think this way. Tourist are budget conscience but are also on time constraint and want to avoid the hassles of getting lost especially if they do not speak Spanish, Travel the route of least resistance. A local simply would not spend at the level we would because it does not make sense for them. Just like you do not spend as much on meals at home as you do when you travel. About 2% of the population is considered wealthy by American and European standards and about 6% are extreme poor or homeless (less than in the USA) the rest of Costa Rican would be considered working class they are by no means poor, Some of the chicas I spoke to make between $100 - $175 on a slow night and $300 to $500 on a good night. I only made $600 a week working at a bank in the US for 40 -55 hours a week and was told win to come in and when to leave and had to ask permission for a day off. These chicas work when they want for how long the want and do not have to worry about FICA. The next time any of you guys are in the HDR. KL, HLH or SL do not just look at how pretty or ugly the girls are. Actually watch the girls. Check out their body language. Try to imagine what they are talking about. Well I can tell you, other than their kids, monthly visitor and boyfriend/baby daddy they talk about us MONGERS! About a quarter of the chicas, especially the Ticas and Colombianas speak very good English and go back and tell their friends about how much they got paid, scams they ran, and how to judge if a guy is going to be an easy payday or if she is going to get worked over. Ever wonder why some of the hottest chicas run over to the old, fat bald guy? Also, some of you guy have informed the chicas about the forum (besides its media exposure back in 2003 2004) so they have gotten on and keep up to date just like we do. They know what we know, “knowledge is power.”

I have a friend that used to work at the consulate office here in town. He now works for Costa Rican Immigration. I always let him know when I am going to be in country and he gives me a heads up of what’s going on if he can. I have RTFF especially recently in planning this trip. I can tell you that a few of the measures in the new immigration law are aimed at perpetual tourist to encourage them to become residents since they spend so much time in country. The raids and crack downs are similar to what is happening in Arizona. Illegal immigrants, mostly Nicos, are the primary target. The Nico street gangs in San Jose are blamed by the Government to be the largest contributor of crimes against tourist and citizens. They are also heavily scrutinized as drug traffickers and distributors. Dominicans get work and school visas. The Colombians can easily get refugee visas or they live in Panama for a while first then come to Costa Rica. The lower number of Nicas IMHO is part of the reason why service has gone down and prices have gone up to ridiculous levels and negotiations have become much more difficult. In Jaco we were offered access to whatever herbs and enhancements we want to engage in. I could not say either way if the offers came from Nicos, Ticos or any other Nationality. When my friend A was arranging his TLN and needed to borrow some colones (negotiating tactic) the chica I was talking to got upset and yelled at her because she lowered “the price.”

Had a fellow monger ask me about how I took and was successful in selling some electronic items in Central America.

...........................................................

He asked..............

Hey, read your post about selling computers and stuff down in Central America. Where do you sell the stuff? I keep hearing people talk about this, but have no idea where to sell the stuff.

Thanks
.............................................................

I sent him a private message with the following...but also thought I would share it with anyone else wanting to do the same:
..........................................................

My response:

I usually take a couple of cell phones and small computers with me to CR, Nicaragua, or Panama....and before I go on the trip I put a couple of free ads on Cragislist....for Central America.

That way the locals can see what I have, when I will be there, and how to get in touch with me....at my hotel and such - to look at them and buy them.

Be careful though...there are lots of hustlers and crooks down there,

When you get a prospective customer...always meet him in a very public place like the lobby of your hotel, or a big restaurant, .....if not and you let them get close to you otherwise -----they will just steal your stuff.

On going thru customs from your airplane...just pack the electronic gear in your checked luggage...they very rarely ever check any of that stuff in Central America.

Your bags will get checked in the US...before leaving by TSA....but not in Cen. America.

I have a buddy who just got back from San Jose CR. He took a couple of Iphones and an Ipad or two...and sold all of it for a real good profit.
Perhaps double what you could make off them here in the States........

He hooked up with the manager of his hotel....and that guy got the customers for the electronics and brought them in.

There are locals down who have plenty of money for that type of stuff....and stuff like laptops are about triple the price there as they would be here...so they are glad to get it at a bargain price.

For example....a new small Netbook here would cost you perhaps $ 200.00....you can get $ 350.00 or more for them in San Jose CR.....if you can find the right customer for it.

If you don't have some advertisement or local guy to help you....you will not be able to find good customers who have the money to buy the stuff.

The average CR Tico will only earn about $ 5.00 a day at their jobs....so they won't be a viable customer to buy a $ 350.00 Netbook or Iphone.

So you have to find locals who have some big money....and again they are there....but you won't find them unless you do some homework before you go down there.

Do not overload yourself trying to bring laptops with 15" or 19" screens...just too big to lug around...take the small expensive items like the Iphones, Ipads, and small Netbooks.

Cell phones....leave them home...everyone down there can buy a cell phone...they are reasonable cheap...but laptops are very expensive in Cen. America....even nice color flat screen TV's and refrigerators, freezers, washers/dryers and such are very expensive in Central America - because they have to import all that type of stuff from other countries like the US or from Asia....but of course you won't want to bring anything like with you. Just a few small high end - electronic items that you can carry & conceal in your luggage.

Good Luck, Steve

9,500 colones to Del Rey about 9 PM with light traffic. 9,000 about noon on Sunday with very light traffic. Rush hour would be considerably more. Try the bus for 450 colones. Every 10 minutes. Bus stop on other side of parking garage.

Hope this helps

When I am not loaded down when I arrive I take the bus, Walk to the left when you exit and then turn right at the road on the back side of parking garage. Look for the red and white bus R.A.S.C.A going into San Jose. The other bus's are older and stop more along the autopista into SJ. The cost is 450 colones try to have the correct change or a bill no bigger then 1 mil.

These bus's have a luggage compartment just like the Gray Hounds do. The bus stops at the end of Pasao Colon and the beginning of Ave Secundo across from the Nica Park. Every taxi in SJ goes by this station and you can get a taxi to DR, SL or HCH for no more then 1000 / $2.00 depending on the time of day and traffic.
I haven't taken a taxi back to the airpot in years. If you dont have many bags its only a 15 - 20 min. stroll down Ave Central to the bus station.

Take The Bus - Save Some Money For Eatin, Drinkin, and Mongerin.........

Why pay a taxista (sp) $ 20-25.00 to have him take you from the International Airport in San Jose to downtown San Jose....when you can walk down the hill (about 75 yards) and hop onto a bus for about $ 1.00 to downtown SJ.

You can ride the bus to within 2 blocks of the Presidente Hotel and within 4 blocks of the Hotel Del Rey.....then walk it or take a taxi then the last few blocks for about $ 1.50-2.00....saving you about $ 22.00

Ask the bus driver by saying, " El Presidente Hotel"....as in a question.....and he will tell you exactly where to get off the bus on 2nd Ave.....before he turns around and goes back towards the airport for the return trip....matter of fact just ride it as far as the driver will let you ride from the airport...they will always tell you to get off or pay another fare...that is you clue that you have arrived at the end of your fare and the trip...then walk or grab a taxi on up to your hotel.

And it should go without saying....that you need to keep a close eye on your bags and belongings anywhere on a bus in Central America.......

I quit taking those long taxi rides long ago and now take buses everywhere in San Jose....just much smarter, and way less expensive.

With a little practice and travel time - you will be able to navigate your way around San Jose...almost anywhere via regular bus.

If you have luggage or if it is not day time a good compromise is to take the shuttle bus for around $10. Go to:

www.shuttlebus.co.cr

I plan to take it on my next trip. I have read good reports about it on other boards.

Also since many of us arrive with lots of cash, laptops, cameras and cell phones it could be prudent to bite the bullet and pay for a taxi to get to your hotel fast and store your goodies away.

Quick question heading down To SJ on friday. I will want to catch the US vs England game while down there. Can anyone recommend a good bar to watch it from? I don't know if Sportsman Lodge will have the game since I have never been and this is my first trip. Would ideally like to be able to watch the game and have the attention of some women at the same time.

Bill at Sportsman's Lodge has about 3 big screen color TV always going.....more than likely they will have your game up and running when you get there.

Or you can probably catch the game on the TV's in the bar at the Del Rey Hotel...but it is some what noisey with all the action going on there...don't know how good it would be to try to concentrate your attention on the game....but plenty of attractive gals around to divert your attention....in a good way.

I read about how Internet escorts are so out of control in the United States now that people might stop coming to Costa Rica. I'm not sure that is true depending on where you live in the United States.

http://crexpertise.info/online-hookers-sex-tourism/

The report is above. I lived in Houston for a years and admit stopped bothering to go to Mexico because it was just easier to pick up a chica for under $100 on the weekends. I would alternate between the bars, "modeling" studios, and now Internet escorts. Now its like the town is like Tijuana.

I'm not sure if this holds water, but what do you think? Why come to Costa Rica and not chase the ho's in the U.S. I am willing to admit that not the entire United States is like So. Florida or Texas.

hmm though im not in san jose, im familiar with that medicine, its an antibiotic, at least in panama it doesnt requires prescription, but Im not familiar with the pharmacies regulations in SJO, you might want to ask for a nonprescription antibiotics.
Best bet try to ask a local tico friend if you have one, they should know better

There are pharmacies on the pedestrian mall(centro below the del rey) with on site doctors that will write you a script. The cost is minimal.

I forgot which one I went to but if you walk around and ask you will find one of these.

No narcotics you understand....but most everything else is available there. He is a little more expensive than other places....but he speaks perfect English and caters to Gringos.

I am considering a trip to San Jose in March any help with the following would be great:

1) I am of egyptian parents but british born so I look middle eastern, is there any type of discrimination in Costa Rica by girls etc, or are there men of all cultures mongering looking for girls down there?

2) Lack of spanish; how much of an issue?

3) If I decided to stay at the del rey would I be able to get a good nites sleep there, considering the non stop action there? And are the girls at the del rey of the or part of the highest quality looking working girls in Costa Rica?

4) Is 300 dollars the norm for an overnite girl?

5) how safe is San Jose in general especially at night as I do look to go and explore and not be confined?

6) Are san Jose Costa Rican girls especially at Del Rey of the white latino type mainly as these are the ones I love the most; ie %white to black girls at Del Rey and surrounding clubs? If anyone can provide answers to the above I would be very grateful, as it is all essential in helping me decide to do San Jose or not.

Finally is March a good time to visit ie still plenty of action in March like the summer?

Thanks,

1. If you have the money, you should be fine. Be polite, considerate, and respectful and you should get the same back.

2. Don't worry, they speak english. Minimally to negotiate a deal, maximum to have a conversation over dinner.

3. Never stayed at the Del Rey for sleeping. Quality of the girls is probably the best in San Jose.

4. $300 is too much. I only do ST, about $60.00 for an hour. Look at this way - for $300 you could have five different girls in one night versus one girl all night. Or you could have a threesome for only $120.00.

5. Take a taxi at night. Be careful. During the day you should be okay. Ask your hotel where is a safe place to roam.

6. There are all types at the Del Rey. Tica's with fair skin, Nica's with darker skin, Dominicans that are real dark. Also alot of Colombians with all kinds of looks. Take that $300 and sample a little of everything. Variety is the spice of life.

Thanks for the reply, at the moment I am considering both SJ or Buenos Aires at the moment BA is winning partly due to the fact that I have been able to get some visual indicators of the type of girls down there from reports, agency ads etc. At the moment I cannot get any visuals or reliable pics of what the girls look like in SJ especially at the DR. I have seen a few pics on some websites dealing with Costa Rica, but they looked very uninspiring, I know a lot of the girls in Argentina are of italian and french bloodlines, so appeal to me alot, can anyone tell me where I can get reliable pics on the web of the san jose girls? So I at least know what I am dealing with? Also BA seems far more friendlier and more interesting to explore and safer so maybe I should find a job as ambassdor to the Argentines!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the San Jose scene (been there a dozen times or so over the last 5 years), but BA is a VASTLY superior mongering destination and a vastly superior city in general. If you can afford the extra expense and time commitment involved in getting there, DO IT! I spent 3 weeks there in 2004 and will return about a year from now. You have a much better chance of hooking up with absolute stunners in BA. Argentina Private, the ISG Argentina board, is a separate entity of sorts, but your regular ISG login info will grant you access. It is a great source of information.

BTW, there are indeed some hotties in San Jose, but many of them do not allow photos. Do not judge the quality of potential women available by what you encounter in the ISG or any other photo gallery.

Thanks,

Mohab
1. You are of Egyptian parents. So you should fit right in looking like spanish.
San jose is not like BKK or Pattaya. There is no discrimination here. Mainly because locals are of different skin color, hair color etc. you will find San jose the friendliest town.
2. If you know sex language it is good enough to negotiate and have a good time. However if you are looking for GFE types for LT or sightseeing partner little spanish is a must. Take a english-spanish translator.
3. Del ray is a good spot. I have never stayed there. Always stayed at presidente hotel which is nearby and the same price as del ray. I heard Del ray charges $10 every time you take a girl to the room and it is very noisy because bar and casino are open 24 hours. Presidente is free as long as the girl is dressed right.
4. By negotiation you can get a girl for $100 all night. depends on the time. Normally the girls quote $100 for ST. Can be negotiated down to $50-60 ST.
Beware that some girls are on a high horse and will reject your offer. There are many friendly GFE types there who may not be 10 on the scale but will provide good company and service. Spanish girls are horny all the time. I have never experienced a dead fish spanish girl in bed yet.
5. Del ray is ground Zero for all non-spanish speaking mongers especially at night. I would not recommend wandering the streets at night. Take a taxi if you want to go somewhere. This advice holds good even if you are in manhattan or London or anywhere. Do not become a target for locals.
If you picked a girl she will act as a guide.
6. I have gone there in March. It is pleasant.
Costa rica girls girls come in all spectrum of colors. There blue eyed blondes to dark african types. There are girls from Colombia, dominican republic, Nicaragua to name a few. All come to Costa rica because prostituition is legal.

Read this forum and go to **************.com for more info.
Besides mongering costa rica has plenty of nice places to visit.
Enjoy the country.

Go to You Tube and search either Blue Marlin Bar or Hotel Del Rey, you'll get a feel for what you're inclined to see. As noted, the girls in SJO are wise to their faces being plastered on the internet, so you're more likely to get an ass or tit shot than a facial shot, which I give them for their hard earned money, lol.

How much does a drink cost at a bar in San Jose (a mixed drink)?

Going there in Feb and planning out my expenses for the week. A mixed drink with house liquor will run you about $ 2. 50 to $ 3. 00 and up for call brands. At the bars in the Del Rey Hotel (the most famous mongering destination in San Jose). And perhaps a little less at some of the smaller bars around town.

Coca Cola and other soft drinks were about $ 2.00 - the last time I was at the Del Rey.....but you can get a Coke for 50 cents in other SJ locals.

If you get out into the country maybe around $ 1. 50 for a mixed drink in some of the smaller bars.

I can have Costa Rica Colons sent to my house through Wells Fargo or US Bank. Looks like I'll take a 10 to 15% hit. Should I purchase Colons here or wait and purchase them in Costa Rica?

Should I purchase Colons here or wait and purchase them in Costa Rica? You should wait til you get to CR. US dollars are accepted in CR and exchange banks are plentiful in CR. In fact there is an OK 1 upstairs in departure area in SJO if you have to use 1.

Do NOT change money in the US for a fee. You can use dollars form the airport to the hotel. The hotel or any bank will exchange your money with out any fees.

Do NOT exchange your money in the baggage claim area at CR. They have the worst rate in the world.

If you absolutely must change money at the airport then after you get your bags come out and go upstairs to the departure lobby where there is a bank that gives you a fair rate without any fees.

Taxi fare to your hotel should be around $25. Bring plenty of $20, $10, $5 and $1. $50 and $100 notes can only be changed or acceped at the hotel or bank.

Is the dress code more for comfort (tennis shoes, polo shirt, jeans) of is it more for style (loafers, dress slacks, stylish shirt)? I usually over pack and take a variety of clothes, but this trip I'm packing lite because I'm on the move (SL then Marazon then Jaco). Also any hole in the wall strip joints (nude) where I can sit back have a drink and enjoy the show?

I have been quoted "about $5, 000" here in the USA for a dental implant and a crown.

My friend lives 30 minutes outside of Jaco Beach. His dentist is in Jaco Beach, and the dentist says he can do all the work for "under $2, 000."

Has anybody gone to CR for dental work? Not just cavities and cleaning, but something along the lines of root canals, crowns and implants?

I would appreciate any info on this subject. Especially as regarding quality of work.

I would highly recommend you check out Dr. Sergio Chen in San Jose. I had two porcelian crowns done there 2 years ago and they were $ 100. 00 each. He can do the work in one to two days as he has his own dental labortory where they make the crowns, implants, etc. On the top floor of his clinic.

I took a friend there also (buddy from Atlanta) and he had about 8 crowns done for all 8 of his front teeth. He had previously had veneers but did not like them that well (those done in the US) , so he wanted to upgrade to full crowns for his front teeth. They looked great, were done in two days, and I believe his cost was about $ 800. 00 for all of them. That was a year ago, and I know he is very happy with them. As I was with my work.

The only thing I have found that was not up to US standards was that I had a couple of fillings made with epoxy instead of amalagam fillings (the old school way). And those epoxy fillings have come out now after about 1 year. So when I go back I am going to have them refilled with the amalagam by Dr Chen.

He of course can and does implants, and root canals also.

Dr Chen is the son of the original Dr Chen (a Chinaman who married a Tica woman) , so the new Dr Chen. Aged about 50 now is second generation.

He is a very nice gentleman, very courteous and polite, unlike many US doctors. And his prices and the quality of his work can not be beat.

He has a website, and he speaks fluent English. Give him a call or email him and then go there for your work.

His clinic is very clean, and up to US standards. And he is located in the center of San Jose.

It sounds like he could do what you need for a lot less than $ 2, 000. 00. More like around $ 500. 00 I would say.

The porcelain crowns have gone up to about $ 150. 00 now. But that is still dirt cheap compared to what most US dentists charge.

You can search some of my old forum posts for more info on Dr Chen.

If you choose to go to your dentist in Jaco Beach...there is a very good possibility that he will have to send your implants, crowns, etc. to the labs in San Jose...which will take from 5 to 7 days....and you will need to go back to have the work completed after that time.

Doc Chen can get it all done in a couple of days, and he will fit you in around his other local patients so you do not have to hang around and wait for the lab work to be completed those extra days.

Get your dental work done in SJ...then after 2-3 days you can go to Jaco and just chill out and relax at the beach.

I'll be making my first trip to San Jose on Feb 9. In researching the weather, it appears the weather is mild during the day with a high around 80 generally.

I'll be staying at the Dunn Inn and am trying to figure out what kind of "sleeping clothing" to bring (when I don't have a Tica to keep me warm). Will it be so chilly in the room at night so a's to require warm sleeping clothes?

Thanks for any info.

I got your PM and sent you an answer. And I am not sure about the price of his implants. It could run you more than $ 500. 00. But I doubt it. If I were to hazard a guess....I would say $ 350.00 - $ 400.00 - for your implant and one crown

His crowns are now $ 150. 00 - and that is for a stainless steel base with a porcelain exterior. And they used to be only $ 100. 00. When I got two of them in 2008. But I think that price is now at $ 150. 00.

He also does other types. And I believe you can get a gold crown for about $ 200. 00.

For anyone else. Here is a link to his website :

Dental Clinic - Dr Sergio Chen - San Jose, Costa Rica

For the modest price and high quality of his work. I would not go anyplace else in Central America for dental work.

By the way - I get absolutely nothing for recommending Dr Chen - I just do this to help out anyone here on the forum - who is in need of good dental services at a real good / low price.

RedSan Jose CR sits up at about 4000 feet in elevation. There are two seasons there. Their summer and winter. Summer is called the dry season. From about Dec till May.

The other season is called the wet season. From about June till Nov. Give or take.

In the wet season. Air conditioning is usually not needed. In the summer season. It sometimes is needed.

Most Tico homes in San Jose will not have AC. Some of the richer folks will have it of course in their nicer homes.

Most hotels will have AC. And sometimes you need it. Sometimes not.

When I visited San Jose. I would usually run the AC in my hotel room during the day (summer) but shut it off at night. As it was usually not needed in the PM.

I don't believe you will need your winter-time, warm, snuggly, long john. Type pj's in San Jose at any time.

I do not wear PJ's. But if I did. Then I would take some light weight ones with me to CR.

I looked at Dr. Chen's website and I did not see any mention that he did implants.

Anyway as I understand it if you want an implant done then after a tooth is extracted and they put in the foundation or what ever you have to wait anywhere from 3 to 6 months for every thing to heal assuming there are no complications before the crown is fitted. So looks like you need to make 2 trips. One to do the foundation work and then go back for the crown.

Is that true? I was just quoted $5000 in California for a implant and crown and they said it could take up to 6 months from start to finish. Just the tooth extraction cost me $226 today. A bridge is going to cost me $3225.

You may be entirely correct about the wait from implant to the finished crown on top. I have never had one so do not know about that.

I think Dr Chen could do all the implant work. Although I could be incorrect about that too. I have had him do general cleaning, x rays, fillings, and a couple of crowns. No implants.

My friend had all 8 of his top front teeth crowned by Doc Chen. Around $ 800. 00. And was very happy with the quality of his work. As was I. With one exception. I have some fillings filled with epoxy. And it did not last more than about 1 year. Now I need to have a couple redone. Next time I am going to go back to the old school amalgam fillings. At least they will last a few years.

For Robby Burns,

You may find out that you will have to do as Soft Bob says....make two trips with about 6 months between the two trips to allow your gums to heal up to then take the crown. You could call any dentist to confirm this....and you can also Email or call Dr Chen in San Jose to get the scoop on all this too.

SteveSteve (and others) ,

Dr. Chen has already contacted me via e-mail. I sent him the digital x-ray of my tooth. No response yet (as of Tuesday night) regarding the waiting time for the healing process.

Your continuing praise of his skills (and prices) has led me to change my mind about going to the dentist in Jaco. My only "problem" now will be how much "filler activities" will there be if I have to hang around in San Jose.

I just did a 17-day vacation in Medellin last August, and aside from the girls it was pretty boring. Hopefully, I can find some interesting things to do within San Jose.

I'll post here again after I hear Dr. Chen's reply about the healing time requirements. My local dentist in the USA did mention a healing period of 2-3 months. Plus a $5, 000 total cost!

Looks like I will have to make 2 round-trips to Costa Rica. And possibly have a gap in my smile for 2-3 months?

Where is the bes place to exchange USD?You can get good exchange rates at most banks in Costa Rica. But be prepared to wait about 20-30 minutes for this as there is usually a line for bank transactions. They don't do anything quickly at any of the banks in Central America.

And be prepared to see the guards at the locked door with sawed off shotguns too. Quite a surprise from what we are used to in the US.

For a 2nd Option - exchange at any of the casinos in San Jose. Like the Del Rey, or Morazon. You will get good rates there too. And it is a whole lot quicker and easier than going to any bank.

Most business's in San Jose will accept either US currency or Colones. You might pay a little more with USD doing this but they should be able to make the exchange.

Do Not carry a whole lot of cash around with you. You are asking for trouble with a CAPITAL T when you do that.

Before you go to CR. Get a debit card attached to your home bank account then it is very easy to go to an ATM machine. And there are hundreds of those everywhere. To get the cash you need for the day. Most of the machines will charge you one or two dollars for the withdrawal that way you won't be prone to pick pockets or rip off artists in CR. Where there are also many.

Most ATM machines will give your cash in your choice of USD or Colones........

BijouHello, Amigo,

I have been in San Jose many times over the last 10 years. And about two years ago while I was on a 90 day trip there I got sick with stomach aches, vomit, etc.

I asked around and found out that you could go to the local hospitals in San Jose to see a doctor. Sort of like going in to the emergency room here in the US, and it only cost me about a $ 30-40. 00 doctors fee.

I went to the Hospital Mexico. Downtown, saw a doctor, who checked me out and then prescribed some medication for me. I went to the pharmacy got the pills, took then and the stomach problems cleared up in about 3-4 days. He said that I probably had a intestinal virus. But anyway the pills worked and I was OK after taking them for a few days.

I can not remember the name of the doctor though. But I suppose any of them would do, to give you an exam, then perhaps they (the doctor) could recommend a specialist for you, if you needed further treatment.

Thank you for your reply. However, I should have clarified in my post that I was looking for an English speaking medical doctor in San Jose for a business venture and not for personal medical attention. I'm really not sure how to go about locating one so I thought I would just give it a try on ISG.

OK. I thought you wanted to find a doctor in San Jose for medical treatment for yourself.

Now for your other venture. I would try searching on Craigslist. Costa Rica for medical doctors. Find all you can. Then send them info on your business venture.

I have used Craigslist. CR in the past for finding apartments and also found a great 90 day house-sitting job in Oct. 2009 by doing that too. Good luck.

Hey guys,

I've got a newbie question here. I'll be flying into San Jose in a few weeks, but my flight gets in at like 5:30 AM San Jose time. What should I do with myself in those wee hours of the morning? Doubt that I can go straight to a hotel as it's too early, right? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Where is the bes place to exchange USD?Just go to SL or LA. You are saving a couple of dollars going to the bank and there is a more laid back action at these locations. If you don't like it take the exchanged currency and a cab 60 seconds away.

If it's a reputable hotel, I'd at least go there to let them know you've arrived early. Some flights, like Spirit, leave at 2 a. M. So you may luck out and have a vacant room. Take a padlock and lock your suit case and leave it at the hotel desk (again, I said if a reputable hotel. Some of the die-hard girls will still be on HDR (casino and Blue Marlin are open 24-hours) , you can always get a short-time room at the Hotel Morazan, or just drink your stress away at the bar. Enjoy!

Ask any taxi driver when you arrive at the airport. It should only be $ 3. 00. 4.00 for a cab ride to the casino. Kill a few hours between breakfast and the casino, then take another taxi to your hotel in town.

Thursday and Friday are DRY days. No liquor anywhere for sale.

And the girls are home with the family.

Saturday will be a slow restart.

Enjoy.

For those that have driven in both Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, how do they compare? For my needs, a rental car shouldn't be necessary in San Jose; however, a car may be necessary if I plan to explore some of the sites between Jaco and Dominical.

For those that have driven in the capital and campo of both countries, I would really appreciate your comparative assessment of road quality, drivers, traffic cops, signage, crime, and street/highway lighting.

BTW, if someone can recommend a car rental company in Jaco, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

i wouldn't rent in jaco most everything is more expensive at the beach in costa rica, and i have never been to dr, but i do live in costa rica. thrifty has good rates and an office in san jose and another near the airport. lighting is crap outside of san jose, so are a lot of the roads. don't park anywhere you shouldn't and don't leave anything laying out in the car and crime shouldn't be an issue. wear your seat belt and don't speed and make sure you have all your paper work in order and the police won't be an issue for you. it's definitely not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, i have been all over the country.

HelpmannI've owned a condo in Punta Cana DR for a couple of years now and have driven extensively in DR. To include numerous trips between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. The DR drivers are some of the most careless and inexperienced I've seen. You really have to pay attention to their driving actions. But the worst are the young kids on motorcycles.

Thanks,

Helpmann.I live in CR for the last 24 yrs.

While I had numerous frivolous theft during those years, (water hose, shovels etc) only got one serious mishaps.

Was about 4 months ago, in Jaco, during a motorcycle rally. Yup parked my car to go for dinner (Wishbone rest. Very good seared Tuna) and came out one hour later.

No car.

Stopped a traffic cop with the towing patrol to ask procedure. And he seemed kinda afraid of even talking to me. But directed me to take a taxi to the OIJ (investigating police).

Took taxi to the office. Which is closed on weekends (ha, ha, ha) continued with the same taxi to the municipal police to report the theft. Single constable nervous of letting me into the station, until he got the gist of my visit.

Called LOWJACK to report incident.

Had to take the taxi home in Puntarenas. But 6 hours later received a call my car was found. Stuck in the sand on the beach trying to bypass the checkpoints that are Normally erected to catch DUY.

Next morning. I had my car home.

Moral of the story. Park you f. In car in a supervised car park. Will cost you about $10 for the evening but save you so much trouble.

There is a couple of parking lot on the main drag.

Enjoy.

I am planning a trip late November to stay at the westin in playa conchal. The only post I saw was from 2009. From my research I see this area is famous for its natural parks and scenic beauty, but it would be so much more special if you had a hot local escorting you around this part of the beautiful country.

Any idea if there is fun to be had and how I might be able to get and keep company for a long weekend?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers,

My brother-in-law wants to travel to Costa Rica with me on my next visit. However, he has a drug conviction. About two years ago he was convicted of cocaine possession. Will he be denied entrance? Is there a way to find out, before he gets on the plane in the USA?

Does anyone know where we can find out more information about this?

Can someone tell me where I can buy a sim card for my cell phone?

How much do they cost?

I got a PM from Fantasy (thanks again Fantasy) about getting one at the airport. I would like to find a shop downtown to get one so they can also help me set it up.

If anyone knows where a cell phone shop in the city is that would be great.

Five days and counting. Pipe

Five days and counting. PipeThe people at ICE in the airport will have no problems setting you up. Just make sure your phone is unlocked and it's pretty much all you need.

It's called Kolbi for the prepaid plans, look for ICE Kolbi and a little green frog on small signs. Most farmacias and a lot of small stores sell the minutes. You'll need to get the new card from ICE though and since you'll be walking past their mini stand with probably no line at the airport, I highly recommend getting it there. If not you'll need to go to an ICE office and that's no way to spend a few hours on your vacation, trust me.

Hi,

We're 2 americans planning a trip to CR; we'll be staying at La Amistad; we're looking for a group of 2-3 girls to have fun with. Should be into lesbi, as well as anal and fisting action. Non-clock watchers; we would prefer friends that know each other and more amateurish rather than pro. Wouldn't mind paying higher fees for the right performance. Any info on where to look for this would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've only spent a few days in Costa Rica before. I'm wondering if those who have tried have had much trouble taking pictures and / or videos of the girls. I'd also appreciate any recommendations on other locations where videos and photos are usually accepted without problem.

I've never had much of a problem taking pics or videos in Dominican Republic, Thailand, Philippines, Nicaragua. Usually a lot tougher in South Korea and Cambodia; at least in my experience. I find non-pros most willing in Japan and America.

Hello, fellow mongers.

A quick question, it looks like CR from the readings is the place for much P2P adventures in any which way, BUT.

Is there a population of girls that would do P2P in a minimum number of times (Not everyday, not their main source of income) so they are more GFE.

Maybe students?

Office workers?

Single mom?

Sort of like Dave from Peru friends?

Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thanks.

A lot of Asian-Americans visit Costa Rica, and I've met quite a few girls who prefer them. Try not to get offended when even after telling them what country you are from they still call you "Chino".

Where can you find them in San Jose, CR.Hey Dave: I replied to you on CRT but for the benefit of ISGers who have your same question, I'm reposting my response here:

I was there the day after Thanksgiving for a week two years ago and had a great time. No different than a normal day and night. Sometimes more gringos are in town since things are slow in the states. Lots of great chicas to choose from. You will find what you are looking for in the Del Rey. Less Colombianas lately I believe due to immigration raids but still enough of them there, although they are not my cup of tea when in CR. Try some of the Tico strip clubs like Pantera Rosa, Grillon, and Alcasar, where you will find a good mix for less. Have fun.
