I would like to generate some discussion regarding the departure fees for leaving Costa Rica. Some posts have suggested the rate has increased from about $17 to about $40 US. Does this need to be in American currency? If so, this information could be very helpful.

The fee for foreigners has gone up to $27.00, if I recall correctly, but I know for sure it isn't $40. I think 40 may be for Ticos. Also, now you have to go to a special table inside the airport to get your fee paid. These tables are on either side to the left or right as you enter the airport inside, facing the check-in lines of the airlines. Allow time. I had to wait 20 minutes and it was a rather slow morning. I haven't inquired as to whether or not one can buy them in advance, which is what I used to do. I would buy my exit fee stamp when I landed, saving me the hassle at the departure. But now, they have a whole new system.

Lease, do not buy property in Costa Rica.

Today's A. M. Costa Rica has another article on why it is dangerous to buy property in CR.
Aside from being overvalued in a weak market, title problems abound. This cannot be overstated. You have been warned. It is not like common law countries that you may be used to. Agents are dishonest. Lawyers are more dishonest (gulp). Squatters are dishonest. People who watch and oversee your property are dishonest. Tenants are dishonest. Registration officials are dishonest. Sellers are dishonest. Tax officials are dishonest. There is no legal recourse. "Title insurance" will not cover you due to exceptions to coverage...
I have given this warning in the past, and people have argued the dangers are not true. I feel like beating my head on the wall.
They are taken by the romance of it all and buy anyway.

The below is from the paper:

Flaws in file may cost you your property
By Garland M. Baker
special to A.M. Costa Rica
On Nov. 22 all annotations over 1 year old will expire and be purged at the Registro National, Costa Rica’s national registry of properties. This could affect you and your property if for some reason its title is not clear or fully registered.

Here’s a little background. On Nov. 22, 1998, a new notary law was approved and took effect. Before that date all property (real and chattel) annotations would never expire. An annotation is a note on a property’s computer file that indicates a document is pending registration and is defective for some reason. A document can be incomplete for even simple problems, like not enough legal stamps were affixed, taxes could be due, or a number like a cédula (identification number) is incorrect.

The new notary law changed the time limit to one year that a document can be in a limbo un-registered state. However, to give everyone a chance, the old annotations (prior to Nov. 22, 1998) were "grandfathered" and given five years to be fixed. This extended period ends this November and approximately 150,000 unregistered documents with annotations will
be purged from the National Registry’s computers.
How does this affect you? If you purchased a property, car, boat, plane, or anything else that needs its title registered and it is not complete, it could be resold again by the original owner.
For example, a good friend bought a piece of property 14 years ago in Santa Ana. This property was part of a larger parcel that was subdivided.

The original document covering the subdividing of the property presented to the National Registry was found to be defective and for 14 years the transaction has been in suspense. If this registration is purged on Nov. 22, the original owner and/or heirs could place a new request to divide the property differently and re-sell the parcels.

What should you do? Anyone can obtain a printout of any property via the Internet at http://consultas.registronacional.go.cr. If annotations exist, a microfilm copy can be obtained to verify why the property was not registered.

There are a lot of pitfalls in buying property in CR. However to say not to buy any property (if you'll be living there or using it extensively) is nonsense.

I recently transferred a property and it was a complicated ordeal. The main reason being that the municipality had given back some "green space" land bordering the property. This required a survey and other BS. It took about 9 months to clear up. However, I gained about 15% more land, so it was worth it.

This cost a total of $300, including all the transfer fees, survey and lawyer fees.

Make sure you have a lawyer you can trust, and you have to make sure that everything is done correctly. You can't just send off a check to somebody and expect to have things work out.

I would not recommend buying real estate solely for investment in CR. It is expensive, and unless you will gain subtantial use out of it, you're doubtful to recoup your investment. As most people will tell you, go for a few years, get a feel for the scene and then rationally decide if purchasing is for you.

A report like the last one leaves out a lot of important facts. These fares are ONE WAY, and not round trip. Plus you need to add taxes and fees on also. From some gateways these are good fares, but nothing orgasmic. About $330 for the lowest fares, up to $450 for the Boston flights

Anyone know anything about the service called Costa Rica GG Escorts?

Their site is http://www.costaricaescort.com/indexen.htm

Prices SEEM high, but Im not all that familiar with the cost of Chicas in Costa Rica. I am more into the "rent a companion" experience as opposed to the timed encounter experiences. But to each his own.

Hey Racker,

I used the GG escort service a few times. The girls are great. The lady who runs the service is Johana. She is a great person to talk with and she will work with you to get you the girl you want. If you ask her, she'll send you pic's of the girls she has available ahead of time, and you can pick from there. Yes, it is a little expensive, but each and ever one of the girls I've used with her have been 110% true GFE, and no rush or pressure. I relied on her service because several of my trips had me staying out by the airport, and as you know, there isn't much in the way of action out there. I highly recommend the GG service if you are willing to pay those prices.

If you want, you can PM me and I'll send you the last round of pictures I received from Johana.

One change. Thanks to input from another selective gentleman such as ourselves, there is a USERID and Password that you can use on their site to see all the girls they have to offer.

Did anyone read the story about the American Airlines pilot who went on the p.a. system of the plane he was flying to 1) ask those who were Christians to raise their hands and 2) then ask those Christians to share their faith with their non-Christian seat mates?

I read the one article I found pretty closely. Turns out the pilot had just come back from a "Christian fishing trip to Costa Rica" and was just flushed with the brotherly love he encountered during the trip. Wonder if he caught a lot of pink snapper?

I would like to visit either central or south America in late March or April and would like to ask you guys which country would fit my list of needs. I have read a lot of good things on this form about Argentina, Costa Rica and Peru but the exchange rate for these countries dont seem to be nearly as good as Columbia or Chile. I would also like to know the best web sites to get the lowest airfares to central, south America from the western US.

1. A country that has hot beautiful working girls that are very cheap(20-50 dollars all day or all night action)
2. One in which the ladies(both working and regular ladies)are crazy for white American men for GFE.One in which it is very easy to get dates at bars, malls, discos, coffee shops etc.
3. The country that has the best airfares from western US.
4. Cheap lodging.

This is a great form and you guys have given me a lot of very useful info. Thanks for all the great help you guys give!

Just wanted to get started in here by introducing myself. I'm a SWM, 35, and don't have too much of a problem getting laid up here in Dallas. I just need a vacation, but want one where there is hairpie readily available.

I have never been to C.R., but am a veteran of Colombia. In fact, I married a Barranquillera and brought her to the US on a K-1 Visa. I found that I prefer much more to rent them than I do buying them :) I am essentially fluent in Spanish, and know how to handle myself in a latin country while having a bit of healthy respect for my surroundings.

Just want to thank everyone for the great info and trip reports. It's always nice to have some good intel before you are wheels down in country.

I'd like to hear more about anyone's experiences with the semi-pro's, ie luck with picking them up at the malls, for instance. It may not be worth my while, given I would only spend 3-4 nights down there. My experience in Colombia was you could really find some knockouts that way.

My plan right now is to hit San Jose, stay there the first night, and then maybe off to Quepos or Jaco for 2 nights, and then return to San Jose for the final afternoon/night.

Also, anyone have any good recent intel on the pussy situation in Quepos or Jaco?

TIA,

Hi guys!

I'm sort of new to the boards here and am seriously considering a trip to Costa Rica for a few days of mongering as well as some fishing on the coast. First off I would like to thank all of you who have posted and provided some really great information about CR in general and it only makes me more eager to get down there ASAP.

I have a question that I hope the board can address. First off I am pretty open as to when I will travel and was wondering if there was any info about what time of year is the best to go, most importantly is there a time when the airfares are cheaper. As I said before I want to do some offshore fishing as well, so that may be a factor. I was thinking October might be a good time but I welcome any info you might have.

I moved back to Tennessee from California several years ago and one of the few things I miss about So Cal was how convienient Tijuana was...oh well I had some fun times there.

Anyway thanks for reading and I look forward to the responses.

Costa Rica used to have definite peak and non-peak seasons. Over the last few years more and more tourists have come, so there's not a real low season anymore.

Some times when it's very expensive or difficult. Christmas season. Easter. Summer.

I'd use a travel search engine (travelocity.com is good), and enter your city and SJO and click on the "Search all dates for best fare" box. For instance, right now from the west coast you can fly to SJO for $361 plus tax. America West started flying to San Jose in December, and it's brought prices down nicely.

From Miami, there's a charter company flying for under $200 plus tax, or the majors for $263 plus tax. From Memphis it's over $500. Often it's best to buy a cheap connecting ticket to the nearest gateway.

Any of you fellow Canadians catch the W-Five TV show report on Costa Rica sex tourisms? I've never been to Costa Rica but I read the reports here about the Del Ray hotel, Blue Marlin, Beatle Bar etc. I always wanted to know what those places are like. This show actually showed hidden camera footage of the inside of these places and I have to say it looked like a good time. I was surprised though when the reporter was cruising the internet and showed what I'm almost positive was the WSG forum as an example of how mongers post reports and photos regarding their sexual experiences. I don't think they showed the name of the sight but I recognized the layout. I didn't realize how popular this sight was.

i'd say that they better add some more direct flights from canada then. lots of horny canucks are going to get "warm" going to san jose.

i found the web link. the report is broken up into two parts. basically they say we're all perverts (and?) looking for **** girls. and we're taking advantage of the poor girls. they gloss over the fact that prostitution is legal. they show a sign from the park hotel (free blow jobs on tuesdays) and pass it off as the del rey. i guess i can't expect any objectivity. i'm sure it will increase tourism from canada though.

Are there any websites with pics of hotels for Jaco Beach?

I am trying to decide between Panama City, Panama 1 week w/a week at the beaches of the Pacific Ocean (Panama) following that, or a week in Heredia Costa Rica with a week in Samara Beach (Pacific Ocean Costa Rica).

Which would be better for a late 20s, clean cut American with lower intermediate Spanish skills?

I definitely want to meet girls during those 2 weeks as well as avoid being a crime victim. I'm leaning towards Panama at present but am interested in some honest feedback/comparison.

Sale on Continental. Act fast
Sale on Continental to SJO that I just received, by on line notice.

Examples:
From ATL to SJO round trip with fees, taxes - $362
from IAH $352
from SDF $544
from ORD $562
from MIC $565 (Milwaukee?)
from Newark $ ? check it out.
Houston and Atlanta are a get it now bargain. The same prime holiday dates are $ 835 on Delta from ATL.

I checked Continentals web site for these fares.

Jaimito Cartero
03-20-04, 22:01
It looks like they might be fighting Delta in their own hub. West coast prices to SJO are actually pretty low. PHX-SJO on American is $308, LAX-SJO is $328. Plus taxes of course.

West coast pricing has been a lot better since America West got into the market. If you're in a major market for America West, your prices have probably gone down $100-$200.

TACA has also had some low cost fares from Miami.

Being blind, I always try to get a cognitive map of the areas I plan to visit, and SJO is very confusing. According to Frommer's, the calles (streets) run N-S with the odd-numbered streets to the east of Calle Central; thus the DR, BM, KL and President would all be in the NE quadrant, right? Can someone post a concise list of places shown on Lump's map with approximate street addresses/coordinates/intersections, so I can sort of orient myself? TIA. And yes, I've RTFF, but it's still rather confusing.

Sand Rabbit,

My man! LOL. 1.) I don't need to be led by the hand, but it would be a howl to hit the various pleasure sites together. Pay for your trip? Not as outrageous as it sounds; I have made two mongering trips, during which I paid air/hotel for my guide. In both cases, my guide paid for his own meals, drinks, gambling and companionship, but what each guy got in return for leading me and watching my back was the cost of RT airfare and hotel. I'm not offering this, understand, but I have done it in the past. As far as I can see, it would be the only relatively safe way for me to monger. Something for other readers to think about. Hey, if nothing else, if we meet in CR (and this goes for anybody with whom I connect), I'll buy a beer for you and your first 6000 colones session at VIPs Molino Rojo. Plus, I speak Spanish pretty well and can act as an interpreter. Good deal for all. Thanks again for your thoughtful, insightful and informative replies, Sandy.

On another topic. I was reading the San Jose forum for March and came across a thread regarding child prostitution and a sensational report on Canada's W5 news program. The age of majority in CR for legal prostitution is 18, but reading this thread triggered a memory. While in Cancun in 1998, we were told by a number of people, including former pros that Mexican girls could legally enter the trade at 16. Now, I know that the law may have subsequently changed, but it seems to me that child prostitution, while reprehensible may vary in definition from country to country, particularly in Latin America and Asia, where a woman is considered fully grown after her debut age, around 15 or 16. In other words, "child prostitution" between the ages of say, 16 and 18 years may not be perpetuated by foreign mongers, but is promoted and accepted by the culture itself, international conventions and laws be damned. Would I be tempted to go with a high-school age tica? No, but not for moral or legal reasons. I find at my age that older, more experienced, more mature women give me better service for my money. I can only echo however, the sentiments of the senior members on this board who exhort us all to reject and help put a stop to the sexual exploitation, according to the law and accepted international standards, regardless of the local culture's traditions regarding the age of sexual maturity for its women.

End of sermon.

Illini,

I'm responding to you because I, too, was a new monger, and I just want to help.

You'll get a lot of RTFF ("Read the F---ing Forum") replies to these sorts of questions, and it's true, you're going to have to comb through posts of San Jose and other areas to get a clue.

There are girls at a lot of the beach locations. The strip clubs, too, though you're spending mucho dinero. As for the "hoe's" (did you want garden supplies?) they can range from $20 or less in some of the seedier MP's to over $100 at other places. This is per hour, but the option usually exists for more or even a whole night. Read posts about negotiating fees in advance. You don't want to spend $100 at the Blue Marlin in San Jose-unless you're thinking of marrying the girl.

Check out my post on Quepos to get an idea on the scene there. Jaco seems to be the biggest place to monger outside of SJ.

Suerte,

Jim

Although I too am new to this board I have however been to C.R. many times. In my opinion if you want a girl with you at the beach find one in S.J. and take her with you. You may be lucky and meet a non pro who will go with you for fun etc., but probably not. Some of the chicas will be reasonable pricewise if you treat them right (i.e. $50/day plus picking up all the tabs ) but most will try for more! Hey, it's their job! Be patient and find one with a good fun-loving attitude; it can be done.

u.s. is pursuing americans who commit sex crimes overseas
by eric lichtblau and james dao
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/08/national/08mole.html?hp=&pagewanted=print&position=

washington, june 7 — one suspect was a convicted **** from
baltimore accused of molesting boys in two asian countries.
another was a doctor from georgia who the russian police said
drugged his young victims in a st. petersburg hotel. a third was
a retired army sergeant from seattle who may have molested up to
50 children.

the three men would once have almost certainly fallen outside
the grasp of united states prosecutors. but with the long arm of
american law growing ever longer, all three could face
significant prison sentences in the united states because of a
measure passed by congress last year that gives federal
officials much more power to prosecute people suspected of
molesting children on foreign soil. officials have already used
their expanded authority to prosecute five american men, four of
whom are awaiting trial. dozens more investigations are under
way from sri lanka to costa rica.

american officials are hoping their investigations will help
break what they believe are shadowy internet networks used by
****s to share photographs of children and travel tips
about countries with thriving child sex industries.

but so far, prosecutions under the new law have focused on
people who traveled on their own.

the initiative dovetails with two priorities for the bush
administration: adopting a more aggressive agenda abroad to
protect american interests at home and attacking what president
bush has called the "special evil" of **** and
exploitation. in the process, federal officials have forged an
alliance with humanitarian groups in exposing havens for
so-called sex tourists.

"we're no longer having to fight alone on this," said joseph
mettimano, child protection policy adviser for a christian-based
group called world vision. "we have a very active and very
engaged government power working with us now."

but that new power is also prompting debate in federal courts
and in public policy circles over how far the united states can
and should go to combat child exploitation abroad.

some critics of the initiative, including defense lawyers and
law professors, question why, at a time of pressing
counterterrorism needs at home, investigators from the
department of homeland security are using scarce resources to go
after molesters abroad. others accuse the bush administration
and congress of overreaching by seeking to create what amounts
to a global police presence. "what we're seeing is the
ever-expanding authority of the federal government in the
criminal justice arena," said mike filipovic, a public defender
in seattle who represents michael l. clark, the former sergeant
picked up in cambodia.

"stopping child abuse is a laudable goal, but it's really
somewhat patronizing to these other countries to say that we
feel that the only way to solve this problem is for us to do it
for you," mr. filipovic said. "the issue here is should our
government be able to prosecute our citizens for acts committed
anywhere in the world?"

some child-advocacy groups estimate that as many as 25 percent
of all sex tourists abroad come from the united states. although
the data is inexact, americans who have sex with children abroad
are thought to number in the thousands, with hard-core
****s, casual tourists and business people taking advantage
of lax enforcement, child advocacy groups and american officials
say.

indeed, some countries in southeast asia and latin america are
now seen as havens for molesters, turning a blind eye or even
tacitly welcoming such tourists to promote their economies,
experts say. against that backdrop, agents for the bureau of
immigration and customs enforcement, within the department of
homeland security, have mounted an aggressive effort with their
new power. investigations number in the dozens, officials said,
with targets in cambodia, the philippines, thailand, sri lanka,
india, russia, mexico, costa rica and elsewhere.

american agents are careful to open investigations only with the
cooperation of host countries, said michael j. garcia, who
oversees immigration and customs enforcement. in cambodia, for
instance, the police have in several cases charged americans
under local ordinances, then held them for extradition in close
coordination with american officials.

and in the washington suburbs, several analysts at the
immigration agency's cybercrimes unit now peruse the internet
and follow tips about sex tourism networks abroad.

the government's expanded legal authority to pursue molesters
abroad comes as part of a 2003 federal law known as the protect
act, a package of child-protection measures best known for the
creation of the amber alert for missing children. a more obscure
provision eliminated an obstacle for prosecutors seeking charges
against americans accused of molesting children abroad.

previously, prosecutors had to prove that a suspect left the
united states "for the purpose" of molesting a child, a standard
that authorities said made it almost impossible to bring
charges. the protect act eliminated that and imposed a 30-year
sentence for a conviction.

"the big change here," said charles a. ray, the american
ambassador to cambodia, "is that we can actually take aggressive
action against these people and see results."

mr. clark, who lived in cambodia for about five years before his
arrest and had returned occasionally to seattle, is the first to
challenge the new law. according to the criminal complaint
against mr. clark, he told investigators that he had molested
"approximately 40 to 50 children, stating that some of them may
have been 18 years old." he was charged with molesting two boys
and pleaded guilty to the charges in march. but he also argued
that the legal expansion was unconstitutional and an abuse of
congress' authority to regulate commerce.

on april 26 a federal judge in seattle upheld the
constitutionality of the law, saying congress had acted within
its power. mr. clark is to be sentenced june 25 but may still
appeal the ruling.

american officials acknowledge that privately, some countries
remain wary of working so closely with united states agencies.
but so far, american officials say, foreign nations have been
largely receptive.

cambodia, in particular, is considered "a paradise" for foreign
****s, said aarti kapoor, a lawyer with a cambodia-based
group that assists prostitutes and abuse victims. many residents
are young and impoverished, the country's judicial system is
prone to bribery and corruption and neighboring thailand- also a
favorite destination for sex tourists - has cracked down on the
sex trade, ms. kapoor said. "u.s. law enforcement represents the
only hope of finding justice," she said.

federal officials point to richard arthur schmidt as just the
kind of person that the new law was intended to snare.

mr. schmidt, 61, is a former schoolteacher from the baltimore
area who was repeatedly arrested in the mid-1980's for abusing
boys.

in 1987, mr. schmidt was sentenced to an 18-year prison term
after being convicted of multiple counts of sexually abusing a
12-year-old boy in baltimore, court records show. he served 13
years, spending part of that time enrolled in a sex-offender
program, officials said.

in 2000, he was released early for good behavior and settled in
an upscale neighborhood in north baltimore. but in 2003, state
investigators said that he had tried to take pornographic
photographs of two boys in the baltimore area, state officials
said. a warrant for his arrest was issued, but he fled, first to
north carolina and then to the philippines.

last year, the philippine police arrested mr. schmidt and
charged him with having sex with **** boys. he fled again,
this time to cambodia. and within weeks, he was again spotted
having liaisons with young boys.

this time, workers with private child welfare organizations
spotted mr. schmidt taking a cambodian boy to his apartment in
phnom penh. according to court papers, the workers called the
cambodian police, who arrested mr. schmidt. cambodian officials
notified american investigators, who interviewed mr. schmidt him
and began building a case for his indictment in the united
states.

two cambodian brothers, ages 10 and 13, told investigators that
mr. schmidt had taken them to his apartment several times,
teaching them english and computer games, then photographing
them naked in the shower. a cambodian judge released mr. schmidt
last dec. 25, but confirep001ed his passport and placed him on
police watch.

two days later, a social worker with a french group, action for
the children, saw mr. schmidt check into a guesthouse with a
12-year-old boy, officials said. the social worker, who had been
tailing mr. schmidt, called the police, who arrested mr. schmidt
again. the boy later told investigators that mr. schmidt had
sodomized him.

mr. schmidt was returned to baltimore in february to face
charges under the protect act and is in jail awaiting trial. his
lawyer could not be reached for comment.

one group, the international justice mission, has investigators
who build cases against suspected offenders, then turn the
evidence over to law enforcement officials. the group has also
been training cambodian police in collecting evidence that can
be used in american courts.

another group, world vision, serves as a clearinghouse for tips
on foreign sexual predators and has mounted a $2-million
advertising campaign, financed in part by the state department,
to warn americans against committing sexual offenses abroad. the
group plans campaigns in thailand and costa rica, and with
billboards near the airport in phnom penh and elsewhere in
cambodia.

"abuse a child in this country," reads one poster, "go to jail
in yours."

in transit, thanks for passing this along, but i wonder about the necessity of mainstream mongers heeding the news article. i know that i have always avoided engaging the services of anyone under 18. furthermore, the article makes no (or nearly no) mention of heterosexual activity between mongers and **** _girls_. it comes down to this: if she is legal to work in costa rica (both health and age-wise) then she'll carry a sedula. check the card, then use your hard. seems pretty simple. just my 2 colones' worth.

Hi Racker,

I saw your post regarding GG Escorts, I've been looking at their site and am thinking about using them for a week long trip to CR at the end of July. Really what I want is an attentive companion to take to a beach area, relax with, and not have to do the hunting every night for company.

I was hoping you wouldn't mind sharing in experience you might have had with Johana and her service.

I'd very much appreciate any insight you can give me, I've looked at the pictures on the site, and there are a couple that are very interesting, but getting some input from a guy who used the service would be great.

Thanks again,

Tamarindo Action?

Hello mongers,

Some buddies and I are headed to Tamarindo in a couple weeks and wanted to know if anyone had any knowledge about the ladies in Tamarindo and the surrounding areas. I have been to most places in CR but have not heard anything about working ladies in Tamarindo so any tips or locations would be really appreciated. Its for my 30th bday.

Thanks mongers,

Jason,

Haven't been to Tamarindo personally, but at one of the larger properties there is Jeff, the general manager. Jeff is a very good guy and will be willing to help you out immensely. He used to be one of the managers at the Del Rey but moved on.

Sorry I don't remember the exact name of the resort, but there aren't that many. Tamarindo Beach Resort perhaps my old computer blew up with my names and address files.

Maybe someone else knows who I am speaking of and the resort.

It, and Jeff, were on TV briefly on E channel Wild On Costa Rica which featured the resort briefly.

Hope it helps

I have been reading this forum for the past 6 months. This is my first post because my membership was only recently approved.

It seems a lot of guys are headed to SJ for the July 4 week-end. I am too. This will be my first trip to Costa Rica. I have read many of the reports and will explore the MPs and clubs to find the ones that best meet my tastes. Someone posted that they will be hanging out at the BM with a WSG shirt on. I will drop by and see if I can pick out the WSG mongers. :)

Thanks for the info that will save me a good deal of time and bother.

When you arrive at SJO set your watch back to hours. I forgot, but when I realized it just I got two extra hours in monger heaven lol. You can pay your exit tax at the booth and get the receipt in the corner just before the exit area. the guy will tell you to be sure and not loose it. Go out past the taxis upstairs to departure area to change money and get the offical rate. Then you will see why it is a good reason to pay the exit tax when you arrive. Big line upstairs for those waiting to pay so they can leave. Thanks to members for an excellent idea they posted.

If you are a cigar fan here's the info I got on cigars. Of course no need to bring any with you because you'll want to burn the real cuban cigars right? So the real regular size 45 or 50 x6" smoke will set you back about $20 each. If you are paying less you are buying a fake. There are plenty to be found in the street but they are fake. There is a cigar store two or three streets down from News Cafe. Go out cafe to the right. Look up intersecting streets to your left, the second or third has a big souviner sign on the right side. The smoke shop is next to the souviner store. You can pay in dollars if you want. I did buy some at the airport duty free store when I got in but supply/ sizes were limited. Pack of 5 montecristos (#4 size) was us$38. BM sells low grade C.R. cigars at reception about 1k or maybe less. Not a bad smoke really. Enjoy your smoke anywhere you want. :)

You can use your AT&T calling card. Dial the in country toll free # from the phone directory (forgot to write it down) then dial the 800 # from the back of the card and then as usual with card # then area code and number you want to call so you can say something's come over you and you've extended your stay lol :)

Jason,

Migrant One is correct, it is Jeff and he is at Best Western Vista Villas. Jeff is from California and he is a great guy. He can set you up with basically anything. You can rent surf boards and cars in the hotel complex. I usually stay at the Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort, but I do go to the Best Western to hang out and it has a great view and there is a live band on certain days.

There is definitely great action in Tamarindo. I have hooked up with locals and a lot of girls from USA, France, England, etc. Check out the bonfire they have sometimes (I think either on Fri or Sat) at night down at the beach. It does get crowded but you will have fun. Watch out for the "Nachos as big as your ass."

Have fun and be save.

I have received private messages from guys on the boards as a result of posting some my exploits on this and other boards, and they are asking for specific information about my girls.

Over time, I have adopted a policy to never provide detailed specific information about my girlfriends to anyone unknown to me unless requested to do so by the girl, and I have even decided that posting their photos without their express permission is immoral at best, and I do not feel comfortable betraying them in such a way.

However, if I am personally acquainted with another monger, I do not mind giving specific information because I am not worried about my girlfriend's safety. But, when asked to indiscriminantly distribute detailed information in shotgun fashion, that is when I become concerned.

I know what we do would be considered immoral by many "citizens" out there, and that many people would assume we are all just a bunch of perverts and *****mongers, but my experience has been that most mongers are morally decent law abiding good guys, and many are actually pillars of the communities they live in. Most of us do care about the girls we form relationships with.

Because we are good guys, we do not want to place our girls in any position where their pride or safety may be at risk. If you are like me, I develop relationships with these girls that go way beyond sex, and I actually do care for most of them a lot.

That is my reason for "holding back," and I hope other mongers will understand. This and other forums are for the purpose of making things logistically easier, and the forums should not be a pimping service.

Guys need to find and cultivate relationships with these girls on their own, and not rely upon the results we as individual mongers may have obtained.

I say this because we all have different personalities, and we all probably solicit different and varying reactions from the girls we meet. So, our success is NO GUARANTEE of success across the board.

In addition, preferences differ from monger to monger. So, unless you do your own interview, and turn on the charm yourself, how will you actually know whether a girl is what you are looking for.

I hope most other mongers can understand my postion on these issues and those who are asking for specifics will think twice before they ask in the future.

Hi,

I am interested in going to Costa Rica, on a mongering tour but I not sure about the scene over there. Are the women money grabbers like I've heard?

What are the sort of prices I should be paying,

What are the best places to visit.

I've been to Havana Thailand and Rio. How does Costa Rica compare?

Danielson,

Many of the women at Del Rey and Key Largo will try to charge you $100/ hr and you will find many money hungry among them but there are many, many, many (you get it) many other options. In MP's like Blue Zone and New Fantasy you can have girls from $25.00 to $43.00 from 1/2 to full hour at their nice Spa like facilities.

You can also visit the many bars and houses that offers girls from $12.00 to $25.00 for 1/2 to full hr (see www.dongordo.com Maps).

Needless to say RTFF (Read the forum friend). Most reports have very specific information of even specific girls, places, cost, and experiences.

I love CR and have visited several times. Besides the mongering, the people are extremelly nice and will bend over backward to help you. The entire country have spectacular sights to explore and things to do. Most of the mongering is confined to SJ but you may find activities in some other areas like Jacó or Puntarenas.

Take full advantage of the forum, it help me with all my questions before I went to CR for the first time.

Happy huntings.

New Colonial Casino and Hotel?

AM Costa Rica on the last page features a photo of the site just behind the Colonial Casino and beside the Del Rey Hotel, where Colonial is reported to be building a new hotel.
See the issue of July 26.
This would be great news if it goes up as planned.
Although I do not gamble, I like going to the Colonial Casino to eat and to watch sports in the upstairs room. It is very relaxing.
If the hotel has the same ambience, I would be very pleased.

Now if only Netopia would re-open with their air conditioning and coffee and rolls.

Coquí,

You're quite perceptive to highlight the 'service' issues, prices and alternative destinations in CR; it’s good to know there are choices. Darn, wish I had had that info during my first foray. That's a post on which I concur, except for your comments on the people in CR. Let's not be too liberal with kind terms to describe them, it may inflate expectations.

We all have a tendency to use compassionate words to describe the character of people within cities we visit. San Jose is simply not a warm and alluring city, although the country is renown for its natural beauty and wildlife. Acknowledging that not everyone's experience will be the same, I have been astounded by the blatant rudeness and apathy towards tourist in SJO. I reference similar experiences throughout the city over a period of time. This impression is perhaps tainted by negative vibes from casino employees; especially the hoochies (not the 'working girls' in BM) employed by Del Rey's Casino. Shamelessly, these women are the rudest collection of decomposed refuse any where in Latin America – IMHO.

Prior to visiting SJO, one should prepare for this indifference, yet hope for a contrast on the upside.

Macgoo,

You are right about your comments. I did ussed the term "nice people" too general. When I visited CR, specially away from SJ 95% of the people was very nice and tried to help me in ways that I have not found ealsewhere.

While in San Jose the percentage of "nice people" was reduced drastically, at least in half but for a large city away from home, with todays politic asmostphere, this still pretty good percentages. Yes the dealers at the Del Rey are not customer oriented at all. I do not know what they teach the bank tellers because I have not found a service oriented one yet. Government office employees went to the same tellers school. I have found in some local bars the same attitude but it is the exeption. All in all I still consider the mayority of CR to be visitors friendly.

It is funny in a way because I am hispanic and can pass for a Tico and when they thought I was from there it was business as ussual but when they found out I wasn't, they treated me nicer.

Basically I should post next time the disclaimer YMMV.

Happy huntings

Danielson;

No comparison..

Brazil, Thailand, Santo Domingo DR, and Havana are much better than Costa Rica.

Costa Rica was great until the late 90's, then it started getting worse. The problem with Costa Rica, is that San Jose is a filthy garbage dump. It is filthy. The people for the most are nice to you, however they are not to be trusted at any cost.

Perfect US$ bills have been emphasized here over and over. But if you change to the local currency, wouldn't it be easier to just tip using the local currency? When paying for sex, is it less expensive to pay with local bills?

Yes it is better to pay in the local currency.
No there is no Citibank ATM in CR but there are ATM that

They are all over town, usually in phone booth size rooms which lock out strangers.

MJG Dogs: IMHO, I would not even say that the people of SJO are nice. I would describe them as cordial but curt; if you ask a question, they will answer -- nothing more!

BTW, call me paranoid but I don't trust anybody when I travel, particularly when traveling alone. San Jose is no exception to that rule.

It's good for rookie mongers to know that SJO is also, what some have called, a "shit hole", filthy. But unlike many, I try (hard) not to judge the character of citizenry by the look of the city, albeit difficult. Let’s not forget that Costa Rica, while better off than some, is still a poor country. That said, one's financial condition may be beyond their control -- the content of their character is not.

What I neglected to mention was that in spite of previous comments, I still find SJO an ideal, and reasonably priced, field to hobby. And, I refuse to compare San Jose to other cities that I have ‘mongered’. Let’s leave it to others to draw their own conclusions based on forum facts and experiences.

San Jose is far from being a shit hole. They sweep their street twice a day and pick up the garbage everywhere everynight. The girls take 10 showers every day. You can drink the water out any tap. Don't ever give the impression that Costa rica is a dirty country. Those people don't have much, but they try with what the have.

Almotu
07-29-04, 22:13
Since there is no Citibank ATM, how much does Cirrus charge you when doing a withdrawal? I am guessing the ATM dispenses local bills. Is this exchange rate favorable? If one needs to change US bills to the local currency, where is the best place to do it at? I know in Brazil, there are always 'Cambio's where you can exchange money besides the bank or hotel.

police raid new fantasy

from a.m. costa rica, an on line newspaper, dated july 30:

quote:

cops raid two prostitution businesses in city
by the a.m. costa rica staff
police raided two sex operations late wednesday, and the man in charge said this is the beginning of a crackdown on such businesses.

the man, paul chavez, credited internet web pages for helping provide evidence in the case. he is director of the centro de información of the fuerza pública. despite its non-threatening name, this is the unit that handles certain complex cases.

raided was new fantasy on avenida 9, barrio amon, and la bella mansión on avenida 11 between calles 1 and 3.

some 65 officers participated in the twin raids. although a report from the ministerio de gobernación, policía y seguridad pública said the 15 female prostitutes were liberated, chavez said his men were met with considerable hostility from the women.

two persons were arrested, one at each location. at new fantasy, the administrator, a woman identified by the last name of suazo, was detained for six months preventative detention. at la bella mansión, a man with the last name of carballo was detained, officials said.

the report by officials said that the operations were under the same ownership and that three more persons are being sought. police said that both operations catered to foreigners. that certainly is the case with new fantasy, a popular spot for
vacationing north americans, but la bella mansión where a prostitute could be engaged for 5,000 colons ($11.30), has been described by expats here as a place frequented by mostly costa ricans.
chavez said that a million colons were confirep001ed in the raids. that’s about $2,270. he estimated that the businesses collected 14,000 colons ($32) from customers and handled about 70 customers a day.

chavez said that the raids were a result of citizen complaints and followed a six-month investigation. he said he realized that there were similar operations in downtown san josé but no complaints had been filed on these.

chavez said all the women in the establishments were adults. prostitution is not prosecuted in costa rica, but pimping is punishable by prison.

new fantasy, which has been open about a year, was closed down by the municipalidad de san josé jan. 16 but it reopened a short time later. the problem then was described as one of paperwork.

chavez said that the policía municipal and his unit soon will meet to plot a course of action. they are concerned about the sex tourism generated by international advertising of these establishments.

new fantasy was bold in promoting its operation. in addition to web pages, an agent circulated through the downtown handing out business cards to likely looking prospects. he even did so on the pedestrian boulevard in the heart of the capital.

Latin T,

You will not find many classic pros or semy pros away from the San Jose establishments althou there is the Beetle bar at Jaco and in bars in Puntarenas, caution verry bad areas.

For a young handsom tourist the odds for non pros are very good all over CR. Girls are very attracted to anything foreign. I recomend El Pueblo night clubs north of town in San Jose. If you are like me, old and fat, the odds tend to diminish. What a drag....

Overall many girls want to meet someone that will give them a better future and this may be to your advantage. I am not saying to take advantage of this I am just stating the facts.

I was told that the best looking girls in CR are live in Heredia.

Good luck and happy huntings.....

Here is some info on Heredia. The National University is located in Heredia on the east side of town. It makes for a pleasant place to take a stroll and do some "bird" watching. As far as nightlife is concerned, however, the town is pretty dead and most students just head into San Jose in the evenings. There are no decent hotels in the town itself and not many interesting restaurants.

One interesting local tidbit, the Central Park, which is a nice place to take a break under the spreading mango trees, has the nickname as the Park of the Dead Doves (Palomas Muertas). It derives from the old coots that hang out there to check out the young chicas that stroll by (figure it out - the old guys have a shriveled old white thing that can't come back to life). Another tidbit that I have heard that has some general appplicability is that one can tell whether a park is safe at night by whether one sees young couples hanging out in them (what they refer to in ecotourism circles as an indiciator species). That said, the park looks like a happening place after dark, but I've heard mixed reports.

As far as bars, nice bars in Heredia are Boulevar, La Choza and Rancho de Fofo (all near each other). These are Tico bars though so speaking spanish will definitely be very helpful. On sunday night at Miraflores they do a strip show and the chicas are pretty hot, some freelancers. Miraflores would be the best bet to try and hook up with a Heredia semi-pro.

Here is the little I know of Samara. Not much happening. Best to bring your own female companionship. The one place I have seen reported is a club called Fandango. Strip club with rooms in the back. $70 was the going rate for 40 mins.

The rates for all the MP's in SJ are all-inclusive. Some guys tip but it is really not needed. Ticos never do. The girl generally gets half of the house fee. which may not seem like a lot, but hey remember this is CR. If you feel like you absolutely have to give the girl extra, due to an exceptional performance or simply middle-class guilt, just don't go overboard. Restaurants generally tack on a 10% service fee in CR. If you use that as a benchmark then 2000 colones would be more than enough, but again only if you are blown away.

Some MP's charge for condoms and non-US condoms leave something to be desired anyway, so you might want to bring your own.

Tipping aside, ZB is a little pricier than the other MP's but if you get a CRT VIP membership you can save 3000 colones (about $7) on each visit.

I'll be arriving in CR this Wed. for the first time in a couple of years. Given the current situation at NF and LBM, can anyone give me a suggestion as to what MP to hit mid-day? Arte y Sauna used to be an old favorite, but I hear it's shutdown. I'm inclined to hit 747 first. Any suggestions? What's the going rate at IDEM?

Thanks a bunch,

Redbull:

747 is very hit & miss. I strongly recomend the place next door (purple building) called Cha cha cha a.k.a. Casa Lila by some of the chicas that worked there. If my memory serves me correctly, there were about 12 to 15 nice looking girls usually working there. Most were about 20 to 23. Media hora was 6000 colones as of April.

Good luck ~

If you are looking for a classy MP Zona Blue is the place, tel 257-8624 Ave 9 Calle 5. It has a nice selection with nine setup. The cost is twice you will pay elsewhere but is nice.

I use to like NF, cheaper, good selection but oh well. There are many other places that you could visit. See www.dongordo.com map section.

In the Paseo Colon there are many more places. See www.diarioextra.com clasified section under services (Tuesdays to Fridays). Many establishments advertise there even 2 for 1.

I will miss your bash by hours. I arrive SJ late at night the 28TH. Will have to track you down to personally thank you for your great information and guidance to all of us "newbies".

It does not matter what time Beatle bar closes. If you have not picked a girl already just go to Disco or the go go bar and you will find many to choose.

If you want the girl to stay with you should negotiate beforehand what you want to do and settle on the money part. Many girls may say they will stay with you and walk out the first chance they get giving number of reasons.

If the girl starts liking you she will be your girlfriend for the day or more. Once she becomes your girlfriend she will give you sex whenever you want. But she stays with you just for the money she might give many reasons so as not to have sex with you like headache, tired, sore from last night etc. You get the drift.

FX Guy;

Everything is negotiable but with the Beetle Bar girls it is going to cost you. If you have the chance and the time it is best to bring a chica from San Jose. It will be cheaper and will be a captive audience so you will have the upper hand. You can lay the groundrules ahead of time and maybe have a nice test drive before you make your decision.

Good luck......

I was at the beatle bar for all my encounters. A colombian girl wanted 100 but got her down to 80 she would take no less but was very very good. A tico Was 50 probably could of got her to go down on price. Would San Jose be better for price and performance besides how do you really know if the girl is a po or not im sure they all say they are great. I wonder if it would be more worth it to get one for the day not aure what the whole thing would cost plus buses back food ect.

Something happened to my computer, so I shall begin again.

Things that will make your trip more enjoyable.

1. Never be in a hurry, and remember if you are to meet someone at 10, that it may 11 before they show up. So plan accordingly. It is pretty rare that anyone is on time for an appointment. CR time is always late!

2. When shopping, and you see something you want, move on it immediately. Don't be bashful or shy, just move in and see if you can make the deal that you want. If you wait, the item will be purchased by someone who was not hesitant.

3. For the best experience, make arrangements to take trip to beach or volcano or Lake Arenal. Test drive the vehicle, and make your rental plans. The vehicles operate much better outside of San Jose and don't have nearly as many distractions.

4. When shopping watch for those items that have watches and/or talk on cell phones. These will generally be more interested in something other than you.

5. Take 50-100 $1 bills for tipping. Most of the time use CR money for paying everything, it is cheaper. You can exchange at a bank, but the lines are lengthy and very time consuming. Suggest you change at hotel, or casino. Never, never change on the street-------------lots of counterfeit $$ there so watch out.
Also, bring some trinkets, earrings, cheap perfume, lotions, spend a $100 at Wal Mart, and your return will be unbelievable. Use them to tip the ladies, the maids, the bartenders. They will always remember you.

6. If going to beach can fly for about $45 each person each way. Or sometimes, depending on the season, a cab ride is a lot of fun as well. You get to see the country and have fun and games on the side. Will run about $100-$120 each way. The difference is the time of travel.

7. If going to the BM to shop, try from 2-5 pm, there are some bargains to be had, and some semi's that can provide a wonderful experience

8. Before taking a cab anywhere, ask the fare "Quantos denero?" Even thought they have a meter, they are very bad about not setting it. Cab drivers never have much change, and always pay them in CR funds.

10. Consider hotels away from DR, such as Presidente, Balmoral, they are quieter, more secure and offer a more relaxed pace. They are both within walking distance of DR.

11. Check out the Idem, ZB, Eros and some others. Timing is important as there are shift changes and selection may improve or decline. So you need to check them at different times.

12. There are some great places to eat, Monestaria, (great view at night), Il Sorrento (great Italian food), both great places to go with companion.

13. Stay away from topless bars, unless you have $$ to burn. If you go, do not run a tab, pay in CR as you go, I have seen $400 and up tabs.

14. See some of the country while you are there, either through a tour, or I like to rent a cab for the day, and go where I want when I want with whom I want. There are some really awesome sights in this little country.

Finally, take your time, be a gentleman. Remember you treat a lady like ***** and a ***** like a lady, and they fall all over you.

Comanche,

I agree with most of your post, but a few things popped up that I wouldn't agree with.

$50-$100 in 1's for tips? You must be kidding. A few dollars at the airport, maybe someone to the bellman, but beyond that you're just wasting money.

I use 99% Colones when I'm there, but usually have some dollars for the mathematically challenged chicas. If they tell you 20,000 colones or $25, I'll jump on the $25 every time. Most rates stay the same in Colones for a long time, and since it's devalued 10-12% every year, it can mean a big difference in what you actually pay.

As for Taxi's, just asking "quantos" is a license to steal. Just say, "maria" (for the meter) and if they refuse, jump on out, and find another one.

Great post from Comanche. I'd also add to JC's post that I recommend taking the airplane to Quepos or Jaco or wherever. It's only a little more than the minivans, a lot safer than the public bus (the bus station in SJ is a notorious haven for pickpockets, and a lot cheaper than a cab. You'll get to Jaco in 15 minutes and avoid a long, long ride through stomach churning mountain terrain. Of course, you'll miss the sights along the way, but you can always go sightseeing when you get there.

Hi all,

I've read this entire forum, and I have seen that most of you prefer Costa Rican girls (ticas) over the Columbian girls, because the Columbian girls give worse service. My question is, how do you tell the difference between a Tica and a Columbian girl?

Blind Lust

Results from some basic research:

I have read on this board differing "facts" about tourist visas, etc. and so today called my local Costa Rican Consulate. For U.S. residents holding a valid U.S. passport, the maximum length of stay without jumping through some bureaucratic hoops is 90 days, not 30 as has been reported on this Forum. Extended stays of up to one year must be pre-approved by the Immigration Service, located in Barrio La Aruca, but you must show the reason for your stay (i.e. a letter from a Spanish school). Of course, you can still do as many others have done; leave Costa Rica at the end of your 90-day stay, visit Managua or Panama City for a long weekend, then return to C.R. and get a fresh entry stamp.

The $26.00 exit tax is paid only by international air travelers. If you're traveling by bus (to visit Panama, for instance), there is no exit tax.

Recent troubles with narcotraficantes at the Panama border have made bus travel through Paso Canoas a risky proposition, according to the U.S. State Dept. However, travelers with whom I have talked seem to disagree. Most however agree that Paso Canoas is the armpit of the universe, and that border mongering at the C.R./Panama border is simply not worthwhile.

Note: According to the C.R. Consulate in Chicago, if you want to retire to C.R. on a "pensionado" visa, the process takes up to two years, so plan ahead. Among other things, you will need to prove a continuing income stream of no less than US$600.00/month to acquire a pensionado visa. This amount is likely to increase to $800.00 in the near future, according to the consular representative with whom I talked today.

While we're on the subject of retiring to C.R., be aware that numerous scams exist, most notably ridiculously overpriced real estate. Many U.S.-based companies buy Costa Rica properties and then resell them at double, realizing a 100% profit. Carefully investigate the real estate situation before committing any cash. Hiring an honest local rep/agent to make the deals may save you $$$$$.

I'll be in CR the second week of Sept. 2004, and I hope to see some of you there.

J.C.,

About the taxis: I thought that they were not required to use the maria after dark? Also, other guys have recommended that you set the price before even getting into the cab, particularly for short trips around the Centro. "?Cuanto a <destination>?" seems to be a good way to start negotiations, so why do you claim that asking is a license to steal? Also, how hard is it to hire a taxi for a full day (as suggested by Commanche, below), and what would you say is a fair price? TIA, amigo.

Telephone Information: I recently made the costly mistake of dialing Costa rica direct from the U.S., and then found out that the rate on AT&T is $3.42 per minute, plus taxes! Ridiculous, but that's the cost. I also found out however that a prepaid AT&T calling card, available at Sam's Club or Wally World offers a rate of $0.21/minute to C.R. and $0.33 per minute from C.R. The direct-dial rate is 16 times more expensive from the U.S. than the calling card!

To call the U.S. from C.R. using a prepaid AT&T calling card, dial 0800-011-4114. This may not work at all telephones. Enter the card's PIN and then dial the number as you would any long distance call within the U.S. i.e. 1+(A.C) + XXX-XXXX. Hope this helps. I'll never again make the mistake of dialing C.R. direct; I'll use the prepaid calling card. -BL

And make no mistake--some of the Colombians are sweetiepies while some of the Ticas are hard asses.

All that said, you WILL come to recognize a certain Colombiana=TROUBLE look...she'll be blonde, a vacant, bored, or smirky look on her face, big fake tits, SMOKING bod, serious user of cell phones and cigarettes, yakking in a tight knot with her paisanas, and not even be CAPABLE of kissing your ass in conversation long enough to cut a deal (even if it's all in Spanish). The best way to know where the girl is from is just ask them. They are very proud of their country of origen and have no reason to lie. As far as which are better I have had great experiences with ticas (costa ricans) good to very good with nicas (nicaraguans) and good to so so with colombians. The colombians tend to be more business like and less GFE.

I do not get the girls at the gringo places (Del Rey, Key Largo). Mainly I go to the MP'S because the cost is 1/5 as an average of the gringo places.

I am not saying that the colombians are bad. I have had one of my best experiences with a colombian but in Colombia. Let me close with YMMV because I am sure that many felow mongers have diferent experiences this is only what I have found in 2 trips to CR.

I've never negotiated with a taxi driver in CR in my life for short or medium length fares. If you go over a certain distance (10-20 kilometers), you may have to, but I repeat, by doing so for ordinary trips (day or night), you'll just be cheating yourself.

You might have to negotiate a trip to the airport. But always, always, ASK up front. Otherwise; license to steal.

If you're going to go in a pirate taxi (taxi pirata), you do need to negotiate with them. Usually they're the same, or maybe 10% less or 10% more. Not always cheaper. I've only gone in them with Tico's. I'd be a little hesitant if I were alone.

There are some taxes crossing the border. About $9 or $10 on the Nicaraguan side, and something coming back into CR. $3 or $5 seems about right. If you come back within a couple of days of leaving the country via the airport, you *don't* have to pay the airport tax. It's considered a transit, and you might pay $5 or maybe nothing. This was correct at least, as of last year when I did it.

I wouldn't bank on any of the info on Pesionados and Rentista's. They're fighting over a lot of it right now. And I think the suburb is probably la Uruca. I don't recognize the one you mentioned. Not sure if's a pronounciation thing with your voice synthisizer, or what.

Blind Lust

j.c. - i stand erected, er, corrected. the suburb where the c.r. immigration is located is indeed la uruca. and yes, it was a pronunciation artifact of my speech synthesizer. as far as extended stays go, i'm not planning anything for the near future, but i have been warned by a number of ex-pats to watch the continuing soap opera from san jose, as factions fight to either stop or increase the pensionado program, the $60,000.00 "investment" visa program and others. furthermore, i'll take your taxi advice as gospel, as you've "been there, done them;" i was just asking for clarification. "oponga la maria" it is. -bl

Just checked Travelocity and found United Air has a sale at $276 round trip from Atlanta to SJO via Dulles. This is cheep cheep cheep. But it means an all day trip flying North then South.
Unfortunately it is $357 out of Dulles.
Other cities remain high: $335 from IAH, $814 from SDF, $485 from CHI.
$first born from SFO.

Delta starts TWO nonstops daily out of ATL starting in December and this may be United's competitive swipe at competition.
Bring on the competition.
Sort of like the competition between the Dominicanas and Colombianas at the Blue Marlin.

Check Taca.com for flights out of SFO. They have a sale right now, always pretty cheap, and great flight times. They leave at 1am, arrive at 10am so you have all day there. How are you gentlemen?

Long time enjoyer of WSG, though I seldomly post, this being my first time in any Costa Rica section.

I am planning a very spontaneous solo trip to Costa Rica in the next two weeks or so, and although I have RTFF (General Info only, so far due to time), I have a few questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note worthy info: Money is fairly limited (looking at slightly less than $1500 USD to cover EVERYTHING), and narrowing my choices to Brazil, Peru or Costa Rica. Costa Rica is looking the best due to aitrline costs, unless I can find some stand-by tickets. Also, I am looking to stay at hostels more than hotels. I am fairly young (early 20's, possibly with a "younger face"). Will with out a doubt be looking forward to meeting many Ticas (?), and while p4p will likely be had, I am quite confident in my ability to meet non-pros, as far as my not terrible, yet far from conversational spanish will allow. Not overly concerned about safety, and am definately trying to avoid any not-fantastic encounters with law enforcement of any kind. Don't have too much of a problem with finding myself on-my-dick broke, at some point, as that is the condition I usually enjoy here in the states.

Firstly, I am wondering if anybody can recommend any urban areas outside of San Jose, where I will likely be flying in. I am looking for inexpensive-ness, locals (especially women, but dont like anything too touristy), beaches, must-see sites, etc.

Secondly, was hoping to get an idea of what season it will be through september - october. Aveage temp., rainfall, etc.

Thirdly, am wondering about the possibility of any money-earning opportunites. Legal only, with the exception of "under-the-table" if that is an issue there. I definately have a certain way with the richer folk, especially in the US, but have had luck in other countries as well, specifically private lessons to the kin of rich-folk, in the form of martial-arts (am an accredited instructor), english, etc. Is there a note-worthy richer area of SJ or anywher else I might want to frequent for this purpose?

Lastly (I hope), wondering about any sort of public transportation outside of taxis. Buses, subway, etc.? Also, Buses for longer routes (like Peter Pan/ Grey Hound compared with city buses), to get to any further destination that might be reccomended.

Sorry about the long post, guys, and I appreciate all the great info. I've read here so far. Definately very helpful. Any suggestions here would be great.

Thanks

Cool,

The best time to visit Costa Rica is January to March, when its summer time. There will be little or no rain, and the beaches will be full of people. As far as Holidays, avoid Christmas and New Year's, there might not be as many girls availble as expected. I wish you have a nice time in Costa Rica.

Grenada, not sure where you're getting your travel info from. If you're a US citizen you'll need a visa to get into Brazil. I believe you can get it on short notice, but it will be very expensive.

Also there are generally no "standby" tickets these days. If you miss a flight, then yes, you might fly standby, but you can't just hang out and see what pops up. (Unless you're a relative of an airplane employee, etc).

Costa Rica is a good choice. It's not glamorous, but does have a lot of nice places. I'd get out a bit more than just Gringo Gulch (Del Rey, etc).

You can get fares from $200-$400 from most of the US. American, Continental, Taca/Lacsa often have good rates.

Casa Alianza Director Bruce Harris "Fired" Over Sex Scandal!
Bruce Harris, the regional director of Casa Alianza, a Covenant House program that is Central America's most important ch*ldren's rights organization, has been fired because of a relationship with a boy the organization had once helped.
Harris, "recently paid for sexual favors from a 19-year-old Honduran yo*th" who had been a resident of the organization's shelter until near the end of 2002, according to a statement released Friday by Covenant House, Casa Alianza's parent organization.

The encounter took place in a hotel room in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, the statement said. "Mr. Harris had admitted that he acted incorrectly," it continued.

The outspoken Harris had announced Thursday from his home in Costa Rica that he was retiring as executive director of Casa Alianza, the Latin American affiliate of the New York-based Covenant House, to spend more time with his family.

But on Friday Covenant House issued a statement saying it ''fired Mr. Harris and that Mr. Harris had admitted that he acted incorrectly.''

Casa Alianza officials in Honduras and Costa Rica declined to comment and their website, http://www.casa-alianza.org/ is not accessible.

Honduran prosecutors were investigating and Casa Alianza, based in Costa Rica, was cooperating, according to Covenant House.

The dismissal was a blow to the reputations of Harris and Casa Alianza as the chief defenders of the rights of ch*ldren in Central America, which has crusaded for the rights of poor, abused and abandoned yo*th and which had demanded that police crack down on sexual tourism by foreigners who had preyed upon yo*ths in the area.

Child prostitution is a significant regional problem
Harris gained international fame with his allegations that police officers and other security forces were executing street ch*ldren, many of them petty criminals addicted to sniffing glue and industrial solvents.

Casa Alianza maintains shelters and other programs in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico.

In a letter to The Associated Press announcing that he was resigning, Harris said Casa Alianza "had accomplished a lot for the protection of Latin American ch*ldren during the last decade and a half.''

''We have not succeeded in stopping the suffering of street ch*ldren . . . but at least the world now knows it's happening,'' he wrote.

But his busy travel schedule kept him away from his family, he added. "Our ch*ldren are growing and I don't want to miss the time they have left at home.''

Harris had made many enemies
In 2000, then Costa Rican President Miguel Angel Rodríguez accused him of masterminding a campaign to vilify Costa Rica by generating media reports on the country's child-sex industry.

And in January, a Guatemala court acquitted him on charges that he defamed the wife of a Supreme Court justice when he alleged influence-trafficking in adoption cases.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press late Friday, he declined to give details about the case, but said he was "at the disposition" of investigators.

"Sheltering behind a lie has never been my way, so I assume, as I always have done, responsibility for my acts, correct or incorrect," Harris wrote. "I do not want to have the boys and girls served by Casa Alianza pay for my private life."

In its statement, Covenant House said Pedro Fragoso, Casa Alianza's director of internal auditing, had been tapped to replace Harris temporarily.

Covenant House spokesman Richard Hirsch said the agency's board met late Thursday and decided to set up a committee to carry out an independent investigation of the charges against Harris.

"We're a child care agency, our primary concern has to be the good of the ch*ldren," he said. "When there's any question about that, we really have to step back and look at" the situation.

"The program is not one individual, it's all these people who work to assist young people," Hirsch added.

Casa Alianza worked with governments throughout the region to rescue homeless youngsters who had been forced into prostitution rings or the illicit drug trade. It even helped authorities in some countries organize sting operations designed to catch police officers and other adults abusing street ch*ldren.

The British-born Harris was well-known throughout Latin America as an outspoken defender of ch*ldren's rights.

Covenant House Privately Funded
Covenant House says it is the largest privately funded child-care agency in the United States providing shelter and service to homeless and runaway yo*th.

In 1989, a former male prostitute said he had an affair with Covenant House's founder, the late Rev. Bruce Ritter. Several other young men at Covenant House also accused the Franciscan priest of seducing them.

Ritter denied the charges, but was ordered to take a leave of absence when questionable financial transactions surfaced. He later resigned.

The Covenant House board eventually found no serious financial impropriety, but extensive evidence of sexual misconduct. Ritter, who died in 1999, was never charged with any criminal wrongdoing.

Renting a SUV or similiar would work but I would try to rely on air, taxis and buses or hiring a driver and car to the extent possible. Liability insurance is an espensive pain and if you so much a scratch the car you are liable. Roads are terrible and not clearly marked, at least not before you arrive at the critical turn off and so on. Gas stations are rare. Flat tires are common.

You do not really need an SUV for normal roads unless you plan on hitting some unmarked dirt paths which is not for a beginner.

Good luck.

Atlanta to San Jose Costa Rica (SJO) only $261 on Delta everyday non-stop on sale, so hurry. You read this right. Slightly higher on weekends.

Get your hotel reservations first because that is the hard part. I like the Hotel Europa. They have a web site and on line reservation system. info@hoteleuropacr.com About $45 incl breakfast. No chica fees.

Taxi to and from airport is $12. Share a cab.

Nice Pink snapper starts at 10,000 colonies which is $22.

UPDATE
Big Sale is over as of Oct 29 but prices are still below normal.

I found some amazing prices from LAX and PHX to SJO this morning. These prices may be pulled soon, though. I could only get these to price on Travelocity.com (with an extra $5 fee), however. Taxes are about another $60 or so.

Dates from 10/30 to 2/16, I think you need a Saturday night stay. Some blackouts around Christmas.

Greetings,

I am considering taking a vacation next February/March time frame with my kids and Costa Rica is on my short list. No mongering activities are planned, unfortuantely. It'll be strictly a family vacation.

I've never been to Costa Rica but have heard that it is a wonderful country.

Can any of you recommend places to stay?

There will be three kids, ages 14, 12 and 5. Someplace with a nice pool, clean and gringo friendly. Near the beach would be nice and with outdoor activities, hiking, rafting, swimming, snorkeling, etc. available.

I'm thinking that either a bungalow or house type arrangement might be the best option.

Your suggestions and recommendations are greatly appreciated!

And, I'm not limiting this to Costa Rica so if you know of someplace else that would be good for a family vacation that time of year in central america or Mexico, please let me know.

You can post a response here or PM me.

Thanks!

T.D.,

The Quepos/Manuel Antonio area on the Pacific should provide everything you may require for a family vacation. Too many places to list so just plug into your browser: Costa Rica Pacific Hotels etc. You will probably find thousands of links and websites. Almost all of the hotels and resorts can set you up with everyting from fishing to horseback riding to rainforest activities.

PAX,

Nipster

P.S. You might also try doing a search here in the archives, I'm sure there is plenty of information.

Beansed,

What are you looking to do? There are several places with boating/fishing including Golfito, Quepos, Jaco and northwest parts of the country. There are also islands in the gulf that are nice to see. If I knew what you want I could help more.

Tyler,

I see you have many posts here so I assume you are not new to travel but I am not sure why you would want to come here with a family. Yes Costa Rica has some beautiful things to see but that is limited. The main attraction here is the girls. If you are looking for a beach type place why not the islands, beaches can be beautiful here but getting there is difficult as the infrastructure is awful in this country, no signs or directions, the roads are just a series of potholes and the drivers here are the worst most inconsiderate I have ever seen in the world (by far). Most beach towns are not developed, Jaco is the main one and even that is not not great. It is overpriced and full of working girls in the streets.

It is also not cheap here by any means, restaurants are the same as in the US and more expensive if you want to eat in a American style tourist place. I can think of little here that offers fun stuff for families. Some may have a different opinion but I have been living here for over a year and its all about the puss.

Going to Costa Rica on short notice. I'll be in San Jose for 4 days.

What are the best sight seeing destinations? Any dangers as far as picking up girls? I assume San Jose is the best spot to find girls?

I'd really like to see some mountains, a valcano, and some jungle.

I'm a bit paranoid about mosquito bourne disease and snakes.

Is a tour guide needed or is it relatively safe to trek down the trails?

Normally post in the Thailand section but I am gatheirng some information. I would like to relocate closer to the USA. With proper investments I have saved a nice sum of money. This is my question: the Mongering scene aside as this is not any reason to move to any country, how far would US3-4000per month go in CR? I am looking for a retirement type or master planned community in CR where foreigners live. A place with a golf course, swimming pool, exercise facilities ie... Do they exist in CR? If not, are there places like this in Central America or Mexico that fit this description. Thanks for your help.

Samus,

You would live like a king in Costa Rica for $3000-4000 per month. But you will need to either buy property outright with cash, or rent. Secured Mortgages are not too easy to come by.

Excluding your housing costs, you could easily do it for $2K/month.

I've been looking at doing the same as you, and I recently got back from a trip to CR. The best possibilities for the type of community you are seeking, are living on the Pacific coast, either near Jaco/Heradura, or further north on the Nicoya Peninsula near Guanacaste.

With 3 to 4K per month you can live as a king like 2041 said. You can rent a great place (2500 to 3500 sqft) with large lot in Escazu (very upscale) with a great view for approx $1000/mo. Food is so inexpensive is a joke. You can hire a live in maid for less than 350/mo. Health care is very affordable too(100/mo). Transportation will run you less than 150/mo (dedicated chofer). Girls are inexpensive.

When I stay in CR for a month I spend less than staying home.

I have gringo friends that live in CR with less than $1200/mo everything included.

Happy huntings

As mentioned 3-4K is a lot there. That being said, one must also utilize the local products and economy. To eat a large Rib Eye steak, or sushi 3-4 times a week, and similar accompanyments, will be costly. But to eat great, but with local products is easy, and delicious.

PS video games are no special deal there.

Personally, if you like peace and quiet, I'd recommend going outside of San Jose a bit. The traffic here is pretty bad (not Jakarta bad, but getting worse every year), and the real estate prices have risen astronomically. Perhaps Grecia, or 20-30 miles out would be okay.

To get a nice house in a good area, you'll spend 100-200k. For more value, I'd probably head to Nicaragua.

You will not have any luck with U.S. Cell Phones. Costa Rica's telecom is a government-run monopoly, and you will need to use a CR-based cell phone.

The reason that Costa Rica costs more than Nicaragua is that it is more desireable than Nicaragua, especially for things that retired Americans look for in a home, including:

Stable governement without ethnic or political strife,

Excellent education system and highly literate populace,

Excellent and affordable healthcare system,

Full property rights and easily fulfilled long term residency requirements for ex-pats, especially from the U.S. who are bringing dollars with them.

Samus Aran:

I live here on about 3k per month retirement pay and it is not at all living like a king. I plan to go to Nicaragua soon since it is about 25% the cost of living as here. Property is way over priced but property taxes are not. Cost of certain things are cheap like water and power but food is the same or more than the US. Cars are twice as much and insurance is way more than the US along with a yearly extra tax. Any thing such as TV's VCR's are about 3-4 times as much as the US. Services are cheap, I had my car fixed last week. It need a chip for the computer, the part was about $150 ($40 in the US) but the labor was $12. Most service like insurance and phones are government run and expensive. Even gas prices are government controlled and about a dollar more per gallon than Nicaragua.

This is a great place to start in central America, you are not out of place since there are many Americans here. You can get by with a little Spanish while you learn. There is also many American style things to do such as golf courses and marinas, these type of places are not cheap. However getting anything done here is difficult. People here do not applicate Americans and you are treated like they are doing you a favor when you are paying for something. Also most stores and other places will charge you more being an American (or any foreigner). Traffic here is unbelievable and the roads are the worst I have ever seen.

You can get by OK on 3K a month but you can live much better in other Latin American country on that. Bottom line is many people here are poor and live cheaply but as soon as you want anything nice or thing you are use to from the states you will pay high dollars for it.

Hey guys,

I'm considering going to San Jose Costa Rica in late may early June. But I need a few questions answerd first.

1) Is it safe? Or is San Jose a place I should watch out for street crime?

2) Are all hotels chica friendly? If not which do you recomend? Or do you recomend renting an apartment? if so any websites you guys could recomend?

3) What are prices like? Is it short term only or could you get a girl to go home with you for the long night? Also what are the bar fees like?

4) What are the best places I should definitly check out while searching for chicas? and what places should I avoid?

5) Any special travel requirments I should be aware of or does my pasport simply do?

6) In your experience what are Costarican ladies like personality wise?

Reality,

Is it just my perception, or does anyone ever read older posts anymore?

I have read through the list of questions you pose. Now, I do not want to sound rude in anyway because the board was extremely helpful for me on my first visit. But, each and every one of your questions can be answered with a simple reading of previous post. After all, its for the newbies that we take the time to draft extensive reports.

As an example, and without the need to read, see my post in the photo section, made around the 21 of November. There, I provided the photos of some girls along with ratings on; attitude, sex, location (of pick-up) and price. I also give their country of origin. Others have posted very useful information that will certainly help, if you take the time to read!!!!

Just my recommendation.

Macoo I take no offense but i do think it was rude. I went to another forum and learned everything i need. I will be in Del Rey June1-6. Frankly i think this forum tends to wind up being more for experience mongers than rookies since detailed posts are few and far between and the good information gets buried in the old posts. Sometimes i think that board members should remember that there are PM's because the board gets cluterd. So rookie mongers like me have a hard time finding out the facts. I never did learn about renting apartments but i figure eventually ill find that out. By the way loved your pictures.

I know that when I go to a new destination, I will often spend a few hours reading through all the old posts before I start to ask questions. I consider it a wise investment.

The other way, is if you have some specific questions, to PM someone who seems knowledgeable.

Since you felt it was rude, let me apologize. You are right when you say the board gets cluttered with what I call: "instant messaging dialog". This is specifically why admin. designed the PM., yet many ignore it.

Good to know you got the information, regardless of the source. Unfortunately, the forum is ailing and makes it difficult to efficiently conduct research, but there is some pretty good info in this section about apartment rentals too. After reading it, I started considering the apt. option personally.

TobyI have been to Costa Rica twice within the last 6 months. You will have a great time! I have never used the Escort services, because i usually stay at the Del Rey. You never know what is going to show up at your door when you deal with an escort service. The girls at the Del Rey will come to your hotel or you can visit a massage parlor or strip club and work out an arrangement with some of the girls. It all depends on what you are looking for in the "looks" department and your abilty to get away from your business associates. My buddy is a high level businessman and he did not care for the Del Rey, but did make arrangments for several women from Bar Idem and Elite strip club to visit his room. Elite is very expensive for Central American standards, but the quality is great(8's,9's). Be careful in Elite, as the girls have been instructed to push drinks. Management watches the girls closely and i heard the place is bugged throughout the club. Bar Idem is very laid back and there are rooms on the premises for extra activities. I do not know the exact prices, but i am guessing$30-$40) per hour.

The Presidente is a good bet - I'd say it's a 3* by U.S. Standards. But I also would strongly recommend a small boutique hotel, the Sportsman's Lodge. It's just a nice luxury home that's been converted to a small inn of around a dozen rooms (although, an extension from buying and renovating the place next door is either imminent or already in place. The rooms, common area, and especially the bar is great at Sportsman's Lodge, but what genuinely distinguishes the place is the service, and the attitude of the owner Bill, and the general manager, Ray. They are firm believers in going the extra mile for their clients.

The DelRay is simply a brothel/hotel, so I don't know how such a thing would be rated. The Morzon would be considered AT BEST, a 2* place in the U.S.

I have stayed at the Presidente every trip. They are also opening up their new jacuzzi rooms which sound great.

I always enjoy the service, the view at the rail during breakfast and the ability to get away from the "action" at the Del Ray.

I have not stayed at the Sportsman, but have meet Bill. They are supposed to be opening more rooms as well. Bill seems great and I know several who have stayed there and enjoyed it. I have also heard that it can be loud with the tv's and talking late at night. But I have no personal experience with that.

I think anyone would be happy at the Presidente. Make sure to ask for one of the newer rooms and the discounts.

Cork sucker,

You will never get out of the states without a pass port, less more get back in. You need to tell the people who gave you that information that they are in the wrong bussiness. I have been to Costa Rica twice in the past 4 months and everything is about your passport. Not really sure where you live but here in Florida I got my passport in about a week. It cost me a little extra to get the rush job, about 150 when all the costs were totaled, but now I have it and it lets me go anywhere in the world to hunt for pussy.

My first trip in Costa Rica I would of rated about a 7 on the fun meter and my second trip a 10. I just got better at shopping for the ladies and I knew where and when to go to places or clubs. I have yet to see any water or rain forest or any beach.

If you havn't gotten a hotel yet, stay at Morzan. $49.00 a nite on the weekends and $40 a nite weekdays (get the coupon out of the Tico Times). No chica fees, cool little bar with some hot ladies, and only 1 min walk to the Delray, the Sportmens Hotel. Sounds interresting but I looked for it on my last trip, but didnt find it. Taxi drivers are hit or miss on finding things you are looking for. I have 25 days until my next trip. It looks like the airfare is going up. My last flight was 305.00 round trip cant find anything less than 370 out of Tampa. I don't really want to fly out of Orlando where the flights are cheaper, about a 2 hour drive.

Good luck and if you need any more info, shoot me a message. I will be happy to respond.

Does anyone have info or experience with Bendricks International Mens Vacation Club? Its seems like a pretty good deal that includes airfare and escort at either a San Jose hotel or beach side resort for a Costa Rica virgin and wanna be mongerer.Pass on Bendicks.. you will be way overcharged, It is much cheaper and much more fun to pick out your own chica. Do you really want to be stuck with a limited menu, or even a chica that doesnt appeal to you at all? Picking up a chica in the Del Rey/Blue Marlin out of the 100s available is a no-brainer. Just dont pay over $100 USD, and she better be a 9 or 10 in your eyes for that. Beach areas are cheaper but less chicas/places to choose from. The Ticas know San Jose is where the action is. Hi Men,

I am thinking of going to San Jose in Sept/Oct and was wondering if anyone else is planning a trip? You can reach me offline - thank you - Rockhunter.

Also, and you can respond online, I was looking at Bendricks, any personal feedback on this organization or any others that might have a beach resort option? What are the chicas charging ? I don't want to pay too much and have this place escalate into a Cancun. :-) I was thinking of staying at the DelRey or the Morazon or the Sportsmans Club...any suggestions?

Thank you - Rockhunter

Your best bet for action is to stay in San Jose. There is very limited selection at the beach and none to speak of outside of Jaco, which is a dirty beach.

I would stay in San Jose the whole time or find a compatible chica there and invite her to accompany you to the beach, preferable in the northwest region.
Making sure you are compatible is hard. One essential is communication. Either you must speak good Spanish or she must speak good English. And ground rules are needed like not being on the cell phone all the time and not watching TV or sleeping all day.

If an agency (which are illegal) fixes you and she is not compatible it is very hard to turn her in for another. I have heard horror stories about this situation.

In summary I believe it is almost impossible to have you fixed up by a third party agency for a beach vacation with company that will work out.

I would disagree about having to speak the other's language good to get along. While it is highly helpful, you can get along with it if you've got a good attitude.

One of my fondest memories in the late 80's is going to the beach with a chica I got in San Jose. I had a little english/spanish dictionary that I was using the whole time.

For the first timer, San Jose is the best place to go on your first trip. I personally would avoid the places that charge a joiner fee (Del Rey). I've heard good things about the Presidente and Sportsman Lodge.

Most of the independant girls will ask for $100, but you can get it for 1/2 that price or less. It all depends on what girls you like. Some hot ones will not come off their $100 price and would rather go home with nothing in their pocket.

Just for your info: Sept. and Oct is the heart of the rainy season.

For your first trip: The Del Rey or Sportsman.

No problem with the rain in those.

RockHunter,
I can't believe you even asked about Bendricks! Did you even read the post immediately prior to yours? I doubt it. If you couldn't even manage to do that, I suppose asking you to do a little search through here first to answer your questions would be totally out of the question. If you are as lazy as you appear and need everything spoonfed to you then, yes, Bendricks is probably the program for you. Just be aware that you'll probably wind up paying at LEAST 2-3X what an equivalent vacation would cost the independent traveler. If, on the other hand, you decide to take a little risk and do some research I think you will find your time and effort will be well worth it.

Various agencies may promise attractive companions, but bait and switch is not uncommon. They may also offer exchanges, if you are unsatisfied, but that doesn't mean you will like the alternatives.

KYJ and Jaimito gave some really good advice. If chica action is your goal then SJ is the best place to be. For beach locations, Jaco is the only one that offers any serious P4P. As far as its beaches go, they are dirty and nowhere near as nice as many others in CR. Many guys with pussy on their mind overlook this and like going there anyway. Others prefer to find a chica companion to take with them instead and go to some better beach area.

Choosing a 24hr-multiday companion is not like picking out a shortterm girl. Mutual compatibility can be critical. The ability to communicate in a common language is certainly a HUGE help, but unless you speak fluent spanish, which I doubt, is going to be very hard to find. As JC says even if you only manage to communicate with each others broken language ability, you can still have a good time. Setting ground rules ahead of time is a great idea, but don't expect her to necessarily remember the rules once you get on the road.

Some other things to consider, which may or may not be important to you. Does she have any children at home that she will be worried about the whole time you're away? This is may well be the most important question. Its not necessarily a deal breaker as most chicas seem to have kids and most have mothers or someone else that can look after them, but my preference for traveling would still be one without. Is she a heavy smoker? That may not be so important for just an hour back in your room, but could be more of an issue when you're locked in a car together for a 4 hour drive. Similarly is she (or you) a heavy drinker? Does she have any annoying traits that will start to really get on your nerves? You're not going to be fucking 24hrs/day so does she like to cuddle too? Are you planning on any activities on your road trip like canopy tours or horseback riding, etc. and will she be joining you or hanging back at the pool? I could go on. What YOU need to ask really depends on you. My point is that you can never ask too many questions ahead of time and even then it still might not work out because she either lied or you forgot to ask about something. Always be prepared to send her home (paying for her time and busfare of course) if it doesn't work out, but then you're on your own.

Interviews are okay but perhaps the best way to find a girl that is compatible is to go with her on at least 1 or more short term dates ahead of time. Sexual compatability in bed is something that can be hard to determine in the bar. You just have to view your time together with a view towards how well it would wear over an extended time (and still ask all the questions).

One last thing, the prices JC was talking about were for short-term. $100/hr is the current ASKING price and most will come down to half or less for an hour or 2, though some won't. However for a 24hr/day travel companion you're likely to have to pay at least $100/day or more (plus travel costs such as meals, air or busfare etc.). You might be able to get a girl to go for much less if you and her really hit it off or she just wants a little paid vacation, but don't pay any more than $200/day ABSOLUTE MAX (probably much closer to $100)

I don't know if you're interested in this but you'll be in CR over Columbus Day, known as Día de la Raza in Latin America. They have a huge Carnivale in Puerto Limon that week with lots of music, drinking, dancing and generally carrying on. Literally tens of thousands of Ticos (and Ticas) supposedly descend on that town and I'm sure mongering opportunities expand with it. If you're adventurous and want to try something a little different from your usual CR trip, you might consider checking it out.

Unfortunately, I can't go to CR at that time, though if I was I'd be looking for a wingman too, particualrly if Limon was on the itinerary. If you're interested in the Carnivale, I'm pretty sure Nibu Raphael is planning on going, though I can't say if he's looking for any wingman.

My friend Zebra posted this experience on another board which deserves repeating here for all our benefit. This posting is with his consent.

Quote:

BEWARE OF THIS GUY.........In the two weeks that I have been in San Jose, this character has approached me at least three times. He is a 50ish man, nicely dressed, about 5' 8", thinning, graying hair. He seems to be posing as some sort of real estate agent for CR real estate. He carries around an armful of CR real estate brochures. His method of operation is to approach you on the street and ask you if you are interested in any CR real estate. If you tell him you have no interest in any CR real estate, he then pulls a handful of business cards from a massage parlor or strip club [I don't know which one, as I threw it away] from his pocket and insists that you take one. He then insists that you give him some money. If you refuse to give him money, he becomes quite belligerent and will pursue you up the street. This same scenario happened to me today, and he actually threatened me with physical violence to the point that it was drawing the attention of by-standers. He pulled something from his pocket, however I did not stay close enough to him to tell what it was. I quickly walked away from him and told him I was going to report him to the next police officer I saw. I will try my best to avoid this character in the future, and suggest we all do the same.

From what I understand they're just as nice as the regular standard rooms only smaller and with one double sized bed instead of a queen. As for chica fees, Presidente never charges for chica guests but allows hotel guests to bring in only one chica at a time. (ie no menage-a-trois unless a friend lets you sign in the 2nd chica under his room number)

Well I can say yes I woudl start in San Jose, One cause thats where most of the action is. You can take day trips to most places and have alot of fun. Then party when you get back in the evening and night. Just try and get a room at the sportsmens lodge http://sportsmenscr.com/ they are very helpful, and can arrange all the activities you would like to do. Also not to far of a walk to Zona Blue, New fantisy, and the Delrey. Well I do it but would never recomend anyone else try it. Walking to Delrey after dark. I have this bad habbit of walking there at like 9 or 10. Cannot help it,guess I may be a little crazy. Still it is dangerouse in the park about an hour after dark.

Open Question
Lets say one marries in costa rica how fast if you decided to can you ditch your better half like say divorce. I heard you have to wait like 2 years. Anyone have any knowlege about this? Looking for answers here thanks. Open Questions for you:

Why if you consider her to be your BETTER half would you want to get divorced?

Why if you've just gone through the hell that we call marriage and divorce would you want to get married again right away?

Why if "you can get the milk for free" (or very cheaply), would you want to marry the "cow"?

Hopefully, you're not thinking of marrying one of these young tica "working girls". The sex is great and they can be very sweet, but the success rate for cross-cultural marriages is already bad enough without adding usually large age differences, large educational differences, and a history of relationships with multiple sex partners based on the financial rewards that can be extracted. She may seem to be in love with you in the beginning (that's an act they have practiced on countless guys before you), but eventually her hooker training will become evident. Why not just enjoy the relationship while it works and be free to move on to the next conquest when greed or flakiness rears its ugly head.

That said, here is the info on CR marriage laws that you were inquiring about. Basically they are no time restrictions on the guy as to how long after a divorce he has to wait before he can get remarried, however for the girl there is a 300 day waiting period. It sounds a little sexist, but I believe that has something to do with the possibility she might be pregnant by her previous husband when she remarries (the period can be waived if she gets a pregnancy test). http://marriage.about.com/library/bllcosta.htm

I agree with you, one time I asked the same question to a hooker and she said " if the girl is NEW in this line of work, it might work out, if she has been doing it for a long time, chances are it will not as she KNOWS how EASY it is to make money" Motolo.I'll go one step further, if you're thinking about marrying/saving a girl that is "NEW in this line of work", you better act damn fast. The time it takes for a girl to be irreversibly corrupted is measured in weeks if not days. Say you were the girl's very first trick. Say you're foolish enough to try to send her support money after you return to the states so she doesn't have to return to her new line of work. What do you really think the likelihood is she wouldn't just take your money and return to her place of business anyway to pick up even more bucks or to find another sucker to send her money? Everyone thinks their chica is different, but you're home and she's there with all the pressures and temptations that drove her into that line of work to begin with. Don't think for a minute any amount of money you're likely to send is going to be enough to keep her from thinking of returning for more. And all that time she's back at work, sneaking around behind your back, supposedly waiting patiently for your return, sending you e-mails professing her undying love, she's rapidly absorbing a new perspective from her experience with her clients and the advice and counsel of her "co-workers". By the time you return a month later, if she's not totally spoiled she's well on her way or at least irretrievably on track to becoming that way. How can you really expect to counter the 24/7 influence of other hookers with just a handful of money and a few days each month?

And all this assumes she's really as NEW in this line of work as she CLAIMS to be.

Also, even if none of the above were true, you'll never be able to undue the nature of the way the two of you first met and how that might color the nature of your relationship going forward.

Lets say one marries in Costa Rica. How fast, if you decided to, can you ditch your better half? Like say divorce. (Annulment...paranthesis mine) I heard you have to wait like 2 years. Anyone have any knowlege about this?

I believe in other discussions with Armorer, he has mentioned that he was involved with someone else down there. Not necessarily one of the chickies we like to bump in the back rooms. (Hopefully, I'm not divulging info he passed in a pm.)

Anyways, if there were ulterior motives to marrying one of these honeys, for me it would be to establish residency and not so much for love. I'm tired of the rat race here in the USA. Fucking traffic on the expressways is outrageous. (Give me an aluminum roofed hut in the jungle away from dengue mosquitos and I'll be happy eating bananas with the monkeys. Pura Vida.) I've been reading the CR consulate pages on residency requirements and marriage may be the less expensive and with the least amount of paperwork. So then I can marry her then dump her. I mean, wtf, I'm already using her to dump in.

While it may not be the norm, for a working girl to have a heart for anything other than for the dinero, I have met some who will fall for you. Even give you all their money. What they like to say is, "I know how to take care of my man." But then again, it's like a gigolo once said when asked how he could fuck these old, ugly women..."You gotta love the money."

I've had a couple of experiences with the working Ticas that give me an example of both types. Both start by telling me they have kids. But only one justified her work as doing whatever she had to do to take care of her kid. The other only mentioned that she had a kid. This one then emailed occasionally and then she started hinting at the need for cash, but never really came out and asked for it, and since I was here and not there, I didn't send any. Eventually the emails stopped. The other girl gave the impression that she could walk away from the job if not for supporting her kid. I understand.

Once I was asked why I was a bachelor. Because I love the dirty beitches, but I would never marry one.

Armorer should have made his Open Question clearer. I now understand his question to have meant how long does one have to wait after marrying in Costa Rica before one can get divorced. I'll further assume he means for the purposes of becoming a naturalized citizen, since presumably CR is not going to prevent divorce or annulment earlier if people really want to do so. IN THAT CASE, there IS a 2 year requirement. One can divorce earlier but then can not use that marriage to a CR citizen as a means of becoming naturalized themselves. For more info on this subject, refer to THIS link http://www.1costaricalink.com/elresidente/lu-1-2-2002.htm.

Here is my NEW Open Question:
I understand why a poor colombiana or nica might do this but I still have to wonder why any Gringo would bother?

There are few real significant advantages to becoming a full naturalized CR citizen or permanent resident over the more usual forms of residency sought by most gringos. Do you really need to be able to vote along with the rest of the ticos for which corrupt politician will represent them? Do you really wish to wait in line at the free public health clinics rather than pay the fairly modest buy-in for Caja? Permanent residents and citizens can work as employees whereas other types of residents can not, but do you really want to work for tico wages? Permanent residents only have to visit CR once per year to maintain their status whereas other types of residency require you stay in CR at least 4 months per year, but isn't the whole idea to be able to stay in CR full time anyway? Foreign residents can form companies and buy property just like full citizens. If its a matter of getting tico rates, locals will probably try to charge you gringo rates whether you're a citizen or not. Finally, I'm not sure where NB is getting the marriage method is cheaper and less paperwork. True, you won't have to document your income as you would with some other forms of residency, but this is still the CR bureaucracy (sort of like that Ditech commercial where the mortgage lender removes one sheet off of the top of a huge stack or forms) and you'll also have to document your spouse's legal status. And any savings in document fees could be dwarved by the potential financial liabilities involved with marriage.

NB,
That's an informative link, but I think you're reading it wrong. You're comparing the general requirements for applying for residency with the additional requirements required if your application is based on marrying a CR citizen. If you've been married to a CR citizen for at least 2 years, you still need to apply for residency and satisfy all those general requirements as well as documenting your marriage and your spouses citizenship. What you SHOULD be comparing is the additional documentation required for marriage with the special documention required for other types of residency.
http://www.costarica-embassy.org/consular/living/rentists.htm
http://www.costarica-embassy.org/consular/living/retirees.htm
http://www.costarica-embassy.org/consular/living/investor.htm

And what those links won't tell you is that many gringos don't even bother with residency at all, at least not initially. They just leave the country once every 90 days and renew their tourist visas over and over. Of course the CR govt. frowns on this, but it is really not that bad an approach to take while you try out living in CR. What many would-be ex-pats don't realize is that the odds are not insignificant that they will discover living in fulltime in CR really isn't for them.
Here's a new question. How the fuck does somebody live on 600US$ a month down there? That is the most interesting thing I have learned in all this research. Now THAT is a question we can both agree on. I've often wondered that myself. I know many ticos undoubtedly do and I suppose a gringo could too, IF he wanted to live like a tico. But it would be a pretty austere lifestyle by US standards. Most of us who hope to retire to CR someday would probably want more than that. So having sufficient income to qualify for residency is not the problem. The problem is finding a regular source of income sufficient to live well. If you have that regular source of income than marrying a tica no longer becomes necessary.

While doing the tourist thing on my first visit to CR I really fell for the geography of the country. I've seen other travel vids espousing the nomad and "back to nature" life style that have also intrigued me. After living with so much advanced technology for quite some time, I decided that I would like to go in the opposite direction to simpler days before the technological age ends up putting a GPS chip in my ass.

So I started my research, and what better place to go than to the govt, (I assume they should know), and review the info on the consulate pages. So, if I'm reading them wrong, then they should make it a little clearer. And of course, I should not assume things there are as they are here. I mean if I married a babe from outside the country, bang!, that's instant residency for her here. Of course, it'll cost her a $100 for them to do the background check before she gets here, but I don't see any other obstacles. Logic to me seems that a govt. would succumb more easily to the blindness of love for their citizens as opposed to the lust for money other people come chasing here. Anyway, to get the definate skinny on the issues I should just call them and/or get a lawyer which is recommended anyway. However, I would never marry for residency. Love my freedom too much to trade it for even that.

Reviewing my financials, I came across one bit of information that guaranteed me the 600US$ in perpetuity effective immediately. That was a nice surprise especially in my eagerness to get the fuck out of Dodge and go live with the natives in the jungle. So even if it is a meager amount it does satisfy the criteria of the state. Because the sooner I'm outta here the bettah. Other research has indicated that most of the work down there is being done illegally, and just as some sources say that one way around residency is leaving for 72 hours, they also say that working for them can be done illegally as well without a problem. So, generating some extra dinero doesn't seem like that much of a problem.

But all of this is just mental masturbation anyway. I still have to finish Mexpat's paper on why he became disillusioned. Surely, the grass always does look greener and familiarity does breed contempt. But, it's every man for himself and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. (How's that for a bunch of cliches?)

I'm sure it's gonna take more than surfing the web. I'll probably have to get that lawyer to at least keep some things legal. I just really find that country agreeable to my temperament.

Just remember that even if you marry them, doesn´t mean that you can bring them to the US. They have to have an Aids test, and if they´ve done illegal stuff (In the US, anyway), such as drugs or prostitution, they won´t let them in.

If you do appy for it, do NOT apply for it in Costa Rica. I did this, and just wasted a lot of money and time. They can generally only approve `clear cut`cases at the embassy. Apply to your local INS or whatever it is these days.

NB,
Here are some more thoughts.

I can really relate to that get back to nature feeling of yours. My dream is find a little finca outside of San Jose but not too far, someplace up in the hills where things are green, the air is clean and the views are of the city and nearby farms. I'd pick mangos from my own trees for breakfast and drive or catch the bus into town once or twice a week to wet my wanker. Here's the catch, as you've pointed out, if you've only got $600/mo. coming in, you'll need to pick up a few extra bucks somewhere else. BTW, 2 common ways gringos do this is by teaching English or working for sportsbooks, but those can't really be done too easily if you're living someplace outside of San Jose. Another way it can be done is by finding a way to telecommute. For example, you could design websites from anywhere as long as you have a decent internet connection, but that doesn't really get that GPS chip out of your ass.

Here's another thought. I think the guys who have checked into getting a fiance visa for prospective brides from other countries might disagree with you on how "automatic" it is. And there is a reason why a government throws up those obstacles. They realize many cross-national marriages have nothing at all to do with love and are really justs shams to gain citizenship. After all, isn't that what we're talking about here?

Here's a little sidenote on MexPat. I've just read the draft copy to the book he's been working on and I think you guys are going to find his complete oddysey very interesting. I'll keep you all posted on when he gets his website up and running.

Finally, re your last comments, forget the lawyers and forget the web (well don't forget the web completely since its a good place to start). If you really think CR may be for you and you think you might have the resources to make it happen, just get yourself down there. Do the hard research where it really should be done - on the spot in CR itself. Forget the lawyers and residency, at least to start, go on the 90 day tourist visa and renew if you have to. Find out if CR is really for you. Research areas you might want to live by actually going there and hanging out at different times of the year. Then when you're more serious or as you do your field research, bring in the lawyer to get your residency app going if thats what you decide needs to be done. Here's a cliche: Don't put the cart before the horse.

Not a Costa Rica fan, but would like to add my two cents as I married a Limena and am going thru this residency stuff in Peru now.

1. In CA and SA, you are normally automatically given 90 days when you arrive. In most countries it is very easy to extend for another 90 days for about $70.00. This means you only have to leave the country once every 6 months. In Peru alot of people go across the border for lunch in Chile and come back a few hours later.Costa Rica may be different in that respect as I have seen someone mention 72 hours.

2. 10-15 years ago it was all the rage to bring back girls from The Soviet Union and Philipines. By the way out of 10 friends not one of them ever worked out. Things have changed, unless you have had a child with them expect too wait 1 1/2 - 2 years to get them over here. Again I much prefer to move to the Chica's country, for obvious reasons.

3. It is now run by Dept. Homeland Security not INS.

4. Generally there are only two advantages to permanent residency. Work and not having to leave the country. Citizenship is for those who wish to have a second passport so they can travel to areas considered dangerous for americans.

5. We all have our dreams of leaving the USA, I left two years ago and never regret it for a moment. But as others have pointed out you should try living in a different country for 3 months before commiting. Most expats first decide on city/country/jungle/desert living and then narrow it down to several countries and spending time in each one over a period of several years. While you are planning sell your inflated real estate, put all your furniture/cars and everything else you can not fit into two suitcases for sale on ebay.

6. Also join the expat groups in the countries you are interested in to get a better feel for real estate prices/health facilities/cultural issues/business opportunities etc.

7. The majority view on CR in the expat comunity is that it was great 15 years ago but now it is overpriced in relation to other Latin America cities.

7. And whoever is the last one out of the USA, please remember to turn out the lights and do not let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

Excellent post, Lima Busy. Some of your comments back up what I've been saying. The additional comments I also agree with (CR is no longer a bargain, although I think it still has some advantages). The only clarification is on your point #1. Its a little different in CR now. You used to be able to get a 90 day extension on your tourist visa. I believe now all one can get is a 30 day extension. It can be done most easily through a travel agent, but can not be done repeatedly that way and one of the requirements is that you show a plane ticket out of the country sometime within those extra 30 days. For most people it is much easier to just take a 72 hour trip every 90 days. Its no big deal. It could be a flight back to the US to visit the grandkids, minivactions to other parts of Latin America or just a cheap bus ride over the border to Nicaragua or Panama. BTW, on that topic, how are the fares between CR and Peru?

Oh yeah, just saw a very minor clarification on point #4. Maybe you were just talking about Peru, but in CR you only have to leave the country if you're there on a VISA (or there illegally). With non-permanent types of residency you don't have to leave but you do have to stay at least 4 months of the year. So that just leaves being able to work (for the tico rates which can be $10/day) as the main official advantage, and some gringos get around that working under the table.

BTW, on that topic, how are the fares between CR and Peru?

It's often cheaper to fly to the US and then to SA than to go directly from San Jose. Pretty strange. I'd use frequent flyer miles for a trip like this, as it's usually 10-20k mileage for these trips, which is a good value.

Gentlemen,

Thank you all for your excellent suggestions and insights. I am grateful for advice from the experienced. Lima Busy, that was an excellent post. I have been looking at expat groups and maybe even suscribing to their magazines.
Jaimito Cartero, I was thinking of doing it all through the Washington, DC embassy, but somewhere I picked up the idea that I was going to need an attorney down there. Chase Star, my travels to Europe first got me thinking about bringing one of those honeys back and so I started looking into the State Dept. web site. It didn't seem that restrictive but as Jaimito points out that background check can be a MF. I also didn't realize it would take so long.

Well, right now it's still a pipe dream, but in time I'm sure it will work out. I usually succeed at getting what I want. I've been down there 3 or 4 times now, and just like Mexpat said in his report, when you land at San Jose you feel like you're coming home. The more I go, the more I learn and the better I like it. It's just time and money now.

Thanks again everyone.

Delta Airlines has a sale which started this morning to SJO.

Check the fares out of your city. They have been reduced by $300 out of ATL.

Act fast as this will not last long. I am sure they have holiday blackout dates but it is valid at least thru next mid Feb and maybe longer. Check their web site.
Use your credit card to pay in case they go belly up. You will be protected.

Well an Attorney/Notary is the person who normally marries you there, so you are correct. You negotiate the price, so it can be cheap, or expensive.

Well Nastyboy think you were correct I did get things going with that question. I did however find out my answer. Hope it works......
So now I will be quiet again. I have one more trip to Make to SJ this december. One last week, then my next trip is off to Mother Russia. YEAHHHHH. Hmm guess you can tell I like them Eastern European Ladies..
I have found some down there in SJO thats for sure. Only met mostly Romainian ladies though. Only the one russian I posted about earlier this year.
Well guys I am off to bed later

Read your post regarding CR and was wondering exactly which Latin American cities are you referring to regarding lower prices? I have visited CR three times this year (along with 1 month in Thailand),,15 or more trips to Central and Eastern Europe and have a fairly good perspective on those cites,,, was hoping to hear more from you guys regarding South and Central America regarding low cost travel/living/mongering.. I know thats a broad question and may be more suitable for other sections of this forum.

I have been to San Jose 3 times in the last 5 months. And this trip I am going on. on the 13 th of this month, I was going to Bangkok. But the flight scared me off again. Mostly the time in air. And will it be as good as I hope it will be (Bangkok) I know what I am going to get in San Jose. I kind of guess. That both trip may be about the same once all said and done. Cost of flight, cost of pussy and food and hotel. Also not sure if this a plus or minus. There is no gambling in Bangkok. I think I will save some cash. But maybe I will get boared. Since you can't fuck all day. Please if you can. Give me your views and let me know what you think.

Thanks again,

Chilimike,

Asking to compare Bangok to SJO is like comparing Italian food to Mexican Food! It really depends alot on your particular taste (no pun intended) with women, hotels, street scene, culture, etc. Thailand is so unique it would take me a while just to hit the major topics of discussion.. The Culture would be the number one difference (IMO). Thai women in particular (no offense to the men) are unlike any kind of service provider I have met in my travels. Latin women are just plain hot,, with many variations. Eastern Euro Babes (Romanians, Czech, Polish, Bulgarian, Russian) are statuesque,, great PSE's, unbelievable eye contact, long muscular gymnast type figures,, like the Vampires in the movie Van Helsing. Go to one of the many German Sauna Clubs/Fkk Clubs around Frankfurt and you can be in your very own Porn movie experience,, all in the wonderful "Country Club" type venues.

Check out http://www.fkk-world.de
http://www.fkk-oase.de
http://www.the-palace.de

As for cost, Thailand is without a doubt the least expensive mongering experience I have had. Top notch Go Go girls will run you anywhere between $0-$50 for "Long time/entire evening" including a $10 bar fine. Second tier or Beer Bar girls are much less and can be had all over the main
pedestrian ares along Sukhumvit Rd.. Lots of freelancers like what you would find at the Blue Marlin,, add in the Soapie Massage parlors that are a once in a lifetime experience and you have the main ingredients for the awesome expereinces of Bangkok. Pattaya and Patong are other variations,, they are all good. Flights are running in the $700-$1000 range depending on the season,, 4-5 Star Hotels can be had via Priceline for well under $100 or you can choose from a smorgasboard of 2-3 star places that will range from $20-$50.. Food is unbelievably cheap.. Lots of cultural venues to visit (Wat's, Palaces, Temples, markets, etc..)

You have to dedicate at least 2 weeks if your going to travel for 20 plus hours,, well worth it but not always available..

Saying that,, if your tight on time and don't like flying,, San Jose is my top choice. Still,, make time once in your life to visit Thailand,, you will never look at Asian Women in the same way again after you return.

i'm a traveling physical therapist and want a latina or other to join me. do you have any recommendations as to the best way to get one across the border or other without marrying?

i just want a little sex starved sweetie to enjoy exploring some of the different states i will be going as a traveling pt. my tastes are pretty easy--- as long as they are slender i'm generally good to go.

i knew a guy in san diego who would go on sex tours and bring back litttle 20 year olds to be his play things for 6 months or so until his next voyage. this doesn't sound too bad.

i used to be good-looking, but time has been a little rough on me--- had to shave the head (bald) and need to lose about 30lbs which i'm working on, age 38.

any advice of where else i could post to ask for advice or other would be appreciated. my dick and happiness thank you in advance.

NB,
What many would-be ex-pats don't realize is that the odds are not insignificant that they will discover living in fulltime in CR really isn't for them.
As someone who has lived in Costa Rica, I can answer some of your questions. in 1994 I paid $250 month for a cabin on the beach, and I did live well on $600/month. Today it might be a little tighter and hard to find a place on the beach for $600/month, but I bet you could find a cabin in the mountains outside of San Jose for $300/month. That leaves $300 for food, bus and extra stuff. Maybe not a good plan, but if you have no savings and are retired where would the money go further, here in the U.S. or in C.R.? And where would the quality of life be better? My vote is for C.R..

Now, on the other hand, let's say you saved up your money, sold your car, cashed in your 401k and bought a nice little house in C.R.. And let's say you bought a car, too.

Now you have no rent, probably no more than $150-200/month for utilities, including a maid coming in once a week to wash your dishes and wax your knob, maybe if you work it right. Or better yet, find a Tica to do all that for you in exchange for you putting a roof over her head and taking care of her; then you go into San Jose' once every couple weeks "on business" to get a couple quickies in at the local ***** houses.

And let's say you have a $1000/month social security check...

Well, now, living on $1000 month with your house and car paid for, puts you in the category of living quite well in Costa Rica.

When I was there I lived fairly well on $600/month because I had friends where I lived, and all I really spent money on was beer and food and $250/month rent. However, in reality I did spend a bit more than that some months, because I would get bored at the beach and go into San Jose' where I would spend a couple nights whoring, so I might have spent like $700 instead of $500 those months...

I don't recommend anyone try to live on $600/month in Costa Rica; but if need be, you can do it, and still have a pretty damned good life. Panama on the other hand: everyone tells me it is about 30% cheaper than CR to live there, and I know a guy who lives there and he says he has no need for more than $600/month.

Johnny Sax,

Thanks for the info....It was just a thought when I read on the CR consulate page that residency could be had with only that amount of proof of income. Truthfully and in reality I would definately want to have a lot more than that to play the way I like to play down there. So it's looking like a longer term plan, but if I could just hang it all up today, all I was saying, from one source....I would love to jump in now.

I do appreciate the insight from someone who has actually done it. I like the climate in the mountains like in Alajuela, but the standard of living in Los Yoses is very appealing too. I'm sure neither can be had for $600 a month.

Thanks again.

Talk about digging up an old post. I wrote that nearly 4 months ago. Just to put into context here is the question I was referring to.
Here's a new question. How the fuck does somebody live on 600US$ a month down there? This was in context of the minimum income required by CR to qualify for residency. I'm not sure why Johnny quoted me rather than the original question but I'd like to add a few more comments.

As someone who has lived in Costa Rica, I can answer some of your questions. in 1994 I paid $250 month for a cabin on the beach, and I did live well on $600/month. Today it might be a little tighter and hard to find a place on the beach for $600/month, but I bet you could find a cabin in the mountains outside of San Jose for $300/month.CR has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Apart from the usual inflation, which roughly corresponds with the increased buying power of the dollar and thus can be safely ignored if your income is in dollars, prices (at least RE prices) have been driven up hugely in most areas popular with gringos. All of us who had been raving about the beauty of CR as a retirement destination and driven this boom are partially responsible for its PARTIAL undoing. Today, prices of beachfront property in all but the most remote places have been driven out of the range of most native ticos and many gringos as well. Starting prices on rents in the more desirable suburbs of SJ, such as Rohrmoser, Escazu, even Santa Ana are likely to eat up most if not all of your $600/month. While it is true that there are still places where one can find rents for $300/month or maybe even less, I'll still go with my original statement that most guys aren't going to be interested in such places. Personally, I think I'd be perfectly happy with a little cabin in the mountains, but I think most other guys would prefer to be a little closer to the action and I don't think most of them will be that happy living in tico working class SJ neighborhoods like Zapote, Guadalupe, etc. either.
If you have no savings and are retired where would the money go further, here in the U.S. or in C.R.? And where would the quality of life be better? My vote is for C.R..Obviously CR. Now that is ANOTHER question we can both agree on. You'll notice I never even suggested one could live in the US on $600/month either, if at all. At least in CR it is still at least possible if not entirely desirable. And if you want to maintain a tico version of your current lifestyle you should be able to do it for much less than it would cost you in the US. Just not for $600/month.
And let's say you have a $1000/month social security check... Well, now, living on $1000 month with your house and car paid for, puts you in the category of living quite well in Costa Rica. That DOES put you in a different category, one that vastly exceeds the income required by CR for residency, which is what we were originally talking about. A grand a month WILL enable you "quite well" by TICO standards, BUT certainly nothing special by the standards most of us are accustomed to. Still once again where else would anyone be able to live even that well on just a $1000/month SS check? Certainly not in the US. But elsewhere perhaps? Which brings me to Johnny's last comment.
I don't recommend anyone try to live on $600/month in Costa Rica; but if need be, you can do it, and still have a pretty damned good life. Panama on the other hand: everyone tells me it is about 30% cheaper than CR to live there, and I know a guy who lives there and he says he has no need for more than $600/month.If ALL you want to do is stretch your limited retirement funds further, as good as CR is, there are still other places further out on everyone else's radar that offer even better values.

Hi, I dug up the old post because I haven't been hanging here for about a year and was going back through the posts to see what was new... Not sure why I chose your post instead of the original poster, maybe it was something you said, or just random...

I did not mean to be antagonistic and hope it wasn't taken that way. I was just adding my 2 colones so to speak, trying to contribute something to the discussion, as this is something I've not only done, but also researched quite a bit.

I agree with most of what you said below, And I only meant to point out that living in the U.S. on $1000/month would be a lot less "pura vida" than living in CR for $1000/month. I didn't mean to imply you said it wouldn't be, I was just saying that as a means of making a comparison of value for the dollar.

I believe that living in CR on $600/month CAN still be done, and if that was all I had to live on, I'd rather do it in CR than in the US. There might be better places to live on $600 or $1000/month (Panama, for instance) but if you like CR, and are willing to live in a little mountain cabin, ride the bus most places, eat gallo pinto, and not spend a lot on pros, it could be done.

I myself am looking at only around $1200/month to retire on, though I hope to have my land and house paid for. I think my I can live okay on that, even in CR (certainly in Panama if I so choose), with house paid for and only untilities to pay. Also there is a good chance I will have a side-income such as renting a cabin or cabins, or selling real estate or growing fruit or hardwood or ? But even if not, I think that amount will be alright.

Some say living on $1200 month is tight. I say bullshit. Okay, maybe not living like a king, but certainly living well on that amount. Unless you have a pool that needs regular service, an a.c. you run all the time, buy all imported food and clothes, etc... I think the average guy can live okay on $1000/month in Costa Rica. And once you learn the language you should be able to meet Ticas or Nicas or ? to give you plenty of free sex. Sure, you'll want to spend a few dollars on pros once or twice a month, just for variety, but I still think if you don't mind living outside of San Jose area maybe in a mountain cabin, one can live pretty well on $1000/month.

I of course am not one to require or even want to live in a gated community, in a 3 bedroom house, have a pool and guard, and gardener, etc. etc. and drive a new car. I'd just as soon live up on the mountain, drive an old Toyota and spend my time reading in my hammock, and walking in the woods, taking the bus to the ocean a couple days a week, and making trips to San Jose for some beer and girls when I feel like it, have a girl visit me off and on, and the rest of the time just chill out on my "farm" land.

Johnny,
No offense or antagonism was inferred at all, bro. I really appreciate whenever clearly knowledgeable guys like you post here even if we don't completely agree and actually I think you and I basically agree on this subject much more than we disagree.

We both agree that dollar for dollar retiring to CR is much more affordable than the US at whatever level you choose (or are forced by your personal finances to accept). We also agree that in CR $600/mo is barely possible, $1000/mo entirely possible and obviously more than that much more desirable.

Clearly, if all I had live on $600 a month, I'd much rather do that in CR. Where we differ somewhat is on how we would characterize that life. I'd call $600/mo a starvation existence in the US (ie unsustainable), while in CR it is entirely sustainable though still not necessarily desirable.

I'd also prefer CR if I had $1000 a month. I'd call that level in CR much more adequate than the $600 though still not particularly fancy by the US standards most of us are accustomed to. In the US, $1000/month would be more like the $600 in CR or perhaps much worse. That monthly amount here in the US would be barely sustainable if even that and even if it were sustainable wouldn't be an existence that I'd want to live.

I think you could lead a pretty decent though not overly fancy life in CR on your $1200/month. Certainly, it would be much better than living on that amount here. Probably the biggest part of your budget apart from your rent would be for a car if you choose to get one. As you probably know full well cars (as well as gas but not mechanics) costs much more in CR. If you wanted a car I'm guessing you'd probably have to compromise on your rent (perhaps going for that cabin in the mountains you spoke of) if you wanted to keep your monthly tab under $1200. Of course, if you lived in an urban area, just getting around by foot, bus or bike is much more practical than in many cities in the US thereby obviating the need for a car. If you lived up at that cabin, you could still hike to the local bus stop to catch the daily bus into the city, but you might want that car. I'm thinking going the moped route might be the most practical compromise assuming a car was out of my budget.

Of course, just as in the US more money to live on is always definitely better, to spend on trips to other places like Rio, BKK or just back to visit the US if nothing else. Then again, if you really have enough money this whole question of minimum sustainability becomes somewhat moot and one can choose from more places to live. As you pointed out, purely on an affordability basis, while CR may have the US beat, there are still much cheaper places than CR. If that were one's only criterion, I'd say to look elsewhere.

Exactly. Yes, the car is the biggest expense, especially if you live in a 4x4 only area, like up some dirt road up a mountain. The tires alone cost you hundreds, maybe a thousand dollars a year, as you get blowouts every month or two. I have never owned a car in CR but this is what my friends who drive there tell me.

I've been visiting CR since 94 and have made about 10 trips down there, 2 long extended ones (6 mo each). Back in those days the only thing I knew about was Key Largo and a place that used to be around the corner called Happy Days where the less desirable girls usually hung out. I used to go in Happy Days just to talk to the dejected hookers and practice my Spanish because it was cheaper to drink there. I would occasionally let one seduce me into going to the Hotel Asia for a quick bj. I also once had a Tico friend send me into some Tico only ***** house back behind the Holiday Inn, and it was quite an experience, though not one I would choose to repeat.

Ah, the good ole days! (-;

Actually I like it much better now that I know about all the other options. One of the most fun things to me is to just go around to all the various divey bars and have a beer at each place. Can be dangerous, but less so if you go with another guy or two and keep your wits, and take taxis.

Last time we were in SJ we went to those places over in the redlight district, you know, 747, The Hotel Park (could have the names wrong, it's been a while), Caribe..., and had a beer in each one. It was quite interesting. Only saw one or two do-able girls, but the atmosphere was like something out of some surreal noir novel from the 50's; or something like that.

Back in 94 I used to go to some of the places in the redlight district like Caribe, and some much less classy (!) by myself; that was quite risky I realize now, but it was also very interesting in a "living on the edge" Charles Bukowski kind of way. I used to walk all over San Jose at night by myself, even down streets where my Tico friend later told me, "You should NEVER walk down that street after sunset!" I guess I was lucky (knock on wood) because I never ever had a hassle with anyone. Now I know better. But I'll never forget many of my experiences back in 94 and 95 in San Jose.

Hey, has anyone ever been to San Isidro de El General? (the one near El Chirripo, on the mountain above Dominical)

I will be there for a night or two in February and wondering if anyone has found any mongering places there or at least a strip club?

Back in the mid 90's I spent some time there and once I found an old fashioned "***** house" just out of town. A taxi driver drove me up there and waited in the car until I was done and then drove me back for a few bucks.

I walked in, it was only probably 6pm or so, just after dark, and it was like a bar except there was no one there, and it didn't really look like a bar, more like a dark cafe with tables, but no food. Very dark and NO ONE in there.

The madam came over and asked me if I wanted company and I said yes and she sent me over this girl who was not bad looking but not great, either, and I bought her a coca cola at her request and I had a beer. The girl seemed very shy, turned out she was relatively new at this, even though she was probably 21-22 years old.

I asked her "How does it work, here?" in my then broken Spanish (I'm fluent now) and she told me it was x amount to go to her room. I didn't see any other chicks there at all, and as I recall, the price was only around $15-20, so I said okay and we went to her room.

Once in there she asked for the money, told me to undress, she took the dough to the madam, then came back with a condom. She washed my member in a pan of warm water, sucked it and put the condom on. I got the impression this was very new to her and she was definitely only doing it for the money.

She got naked and I will never forget it because this was my first ever experience - and hopefully my last! - with a chick with very thick dark black hair on her legs, almost like a guy.

Most guys would have been OUTTA THERE, but I didn't want to offend her, and frankly I was ready to get my nut off, so I went ahead and banged her Missionary style so I didn't have to look at her body, just her face, which wasn't bad.

I got myself off - she at least had a fairly tight pussy - and then as I was getting dressed I asked her how often she was there. She said she LIVED there , like 2-3 weeks at a time, then went home for a week, then back again. Sounded like slavery, pretty much. Weird scene.

I gave her a tip when we were done, and left.

Anyone else ever gave a chick a mercy fuck, just so as not to insult her? Like when you get her back to the room and then realize she has a very floppy tummy that she had all tucked in, and with stretch marks and/or big sloppy areolas or some other such turnoff (for you); granted, some guys may LIKE big gross areolas or stretch marks! (-; Actually I like big areolas but they have to be nice looking ones. (I know em when I see em.)

So anyway, back to the subject at hand:
Is there any place in San Isidro we can go when we're there next month? I know it's a very conservative town, very farmer oriented. But hey, now that there are lots of gringos living around there, there MUST be some strip club or SOMETHING that can pass as entertainment for mongers. No?

Anyone?

Greetings...

Anybody have any info on a club called Vertigos? Is there any P4P there? Where's it located?

So far I've just heard it's a club for the young crowd.

TIA

I haven't been there myself but they are located near Centro Colon and their website www.vertigocr.com/ should have about all the other info you'd need. As for P4P, your guess is as good as mine. Given the economic gulf between the US and CR, my guess would be that you could find women there amenable to a business arrangement. The trouble is in figuring which ones those are and which might be offended if you overtly suggested it. It certainly wouldn't be like the BM where every women is in play. OTOH, I happen to know that at places like El Pueblo there are many pro's dressed in "sheep's clothing" (ie seemingly non-pro). There your problem might be whether to come right out and make an offer at the risk of offending them or assuming your really just picking her up with your charm and risk discovering later that she expects compensation. I don't think this should be as much of a problem at Vertigo since it has mainly a local crowd (El Pueblo is much more on the tourist's radar). In either place, you probably won't be too far off to assume that an old fart attracting a much younger woman has probably as much to do with your financial resources as it would to do with your charm, in which case offering a voluntary gift of a little dough to help her with her expenses would not be turned down.

LMAO

Thanks Chase...great web site.....so it's a Raver place....that's cool. Maybe I'll check into their VIP prices and take one of my faves from Oasis...

Looking through the pics I didn't see any old "farts", but that Coleen dj sure is a strong pull.

Can you elaborate just a bit on this area? Names of the different casas, their exact location, pricing, quality of girls, hours, etc. Did you say this area is more local businessmen and not so many Gringos as in "the Gulch"?

I am on a plane Monday.

Noguera,I have posted a list of most of the known MP's and casas in the downtown San Jose are on the **************.com site under the MP's section as a stciky that gives locations and somewhat current prices though they constantly incease with inflation. Some of the ones are a bit hard to find in the Paseo Colon area but I have posted some hints. The places in the area do cater more to local professional business men with lots of buisness offices doctors and dentists in the area. There is also a good map there but VIP membership required to acess it I think.Places goet busy in afternoons so late morning is best time to go. rbc100
