I had never been to Canada before. I hit town Thursday night on a mission to try Asian for the first time.

I had highlighted all of the strolls on my city map from the posts on this board and the directions on Un_circumsized's site. Thanks to all for the info!

Something just occurred to me, and I think it offers a better explanation of my border problems than thinking it has anything to do with my site: I now believe that the best explanation as to why I'm being asked to provide so much detail on my life just to visit Canada is because I was entered into the DISC vice database at some point (though unlike some johns, I was never told or notified by mail of this), and the cops who run DISC are now passing on the names of US johns to Canada Immigration for increased scrutiny at the border. I can't say for certain that this is the case (and it is possible that I just ran into a hard-ass immigration inspector last year, and this has nothing to do with prostitution), but this idea seems the most plausible, and it should serve as a warning to other US johns. As for the best route from the border to the downtown tracks, I think Sweetwilly's is definitely longer than the one I usually took: Straight up the 99 freeway from the Peace Arch crossing (or a short hop over to the 99 freeway from the truck crossing). The freeway ends and becomes Oak St in Vancouver, then up Oak to King Edward Ave, then east on King Edward to Main St, then north on Main to Hastings and the low-track. For a wider tour of Lower Mainland strolls, take the Hwy 99A (King George Hwy) exit at kilometre 10 off the 99 freeway, and head up through Surrey. Then after you go over the bridge to New Westminster, loop around to Columbia St, then over to 12th St, and up 12th--which turns into Kingsway in Burnaby. Then just follow Kingsway all the way to Main in Vancouver.

I agree with you about the distance from the Peace Arch. I have just been lost so many times going that way ie the 99 way that I prefer the hwy 15 way, also it allows for me to take a quick detour if I want into Surrey. I am not good with directions so once I find a way I have to stick with it.On another but similiar note I hope that you will be in the happy hunting grounds of BC after your trip:) I have been going up at least every other week and have been having a blast. I am getting spoiled though, Me and a buddy have devised a system that allows for maximum mongering at the cheapest prices well at least for me and him:)

Second night in Vancouver.

I trolled the mid track strolls without much luck. I spotted three on Clark, none on Broadway or Fraser. So I headed out to Kingsway and the quality and quantity simply blew me away.

Vancouver, you don't know how lucky you are! I saw more SW on one trip around the low track than I have in 15 years combined of crusing in my tourist trap Mickey Mouse hometown. I've maybe seen two girls in the same time frame that could stand with the dozen I spotted out on your new high track in one night.

Many complain about prices, but to me it is all about choice. At least you can turn your nose up at the high end girls and drive on. Most places people don't have the freedom to say yes or no. It was the police station on Main and Hastings. Actually, she was standing on the other side, on Cordova St., where all the cop cars are parked. It was about 10:30 PM. She has sort of auburn-dyed straight long hair.

I have to accept most of the blame for the corruption of Sweetwilly, and turning him into a low-tracker. I recall him picking up pricey girls on Aurora Ave in Seattle before his descent into the Sodom of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. I semi regularly cruise Fraser St from 59th down to Broadway in the early AM. Around 4:30 to 5:30. The blocks between 49th and 41st usually have at least one SW, often many more. I saw 5 on the 19th of July in this area. Also on that morning there was another at 27th and Fraser. I think you are referring to Brandy's, a local high-end strip bar. It is located on Hornby Street, just north of Dunsmuir. Its not overly large, has a small stage with a number of booths along one wall and a number of tables. Last time I was there the stage acts were almost continuous and there were a large number of very attractive girls wandering around trying to get you to invite them to the back rooms to do a lapdance. Lap dances were $30 last time I was there. Lap dances were fully nude but strictly no touch. Most of the girls will let you get very close and personal so long as you don't touch them anywhere intimate (this doesn't mean they won't touch you or grind away in your lap). Security is pretty good there so the girls won't do much more than the lapdance.

The advantage of Brandy's is that after a few lap dances to warm up you can go downstairs to the Swedish Touch which is in the same building (owned by the same person). Swedish Touch is the high end (read expensive) massage parlour in Vancouver. It has its own web page (which you can find by searching on Google for Swedish Touch Vancouver Massage Parlour). Room rates are about $120 per hour, girls are quite attractive but rates begin at 100/200/300 and up for hj/bj/fs. One hour with FS will generally leave your wallet $400 to $500 lighter.

If you're into strip clubs, much higher mileage than Brandy's can be had at No. 5 Orange (on Main Street, 2 blocks north of Hastings Street). Personally, I prefer Brandy's over No. 5 because the premises are a hell of a lot nicer and its in a much nicer part of town (quite upscale, whereas No. 5's premises have seen much, much better days!). Most local pooners however seem to prefer No. 5 for the better mileage.

However, its probably the most expensive parlour and some girls have been reputed to have quite the attitude (I haven't found that to be the case on my couple visits). Haven't put in my two cents lately, so here goes. Been doing the Surrey
strolls recently to shave off some travel time from the lower 48. Last week
on my visit I noticed a pattern that struck me as odd coming from the Seattle

Were you going bareback with the baby oil? Hopefully not for two reasons. First, safety (yours and others). Second, assuming you used a condom, I thought baby oil was not compatible with condoms and could cause them to fail? Or am I mistaken?

I think there's also a water-based odorless baby oil available in addition to the petroleum based, yellow baby oil (which does have an odor). You may want to try that if that's not what you used.

Rather than baby oil, in future you may want to try KY water-based personal lubricant. Although much more expensive than baby oil, unfortunately, at least its odorless, not harmful to condoms and a little goes a long way. Most importantly, it is a lot easier to remove if it stains your car's upholstery than oil-based lubricants.

Yeah--oil-based lubricants like baby oil, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly weaken condoms, and are therefore dangerous to use. Instead, use a water-based K-Y -type lube, or pre-lubricated condoms.

Hi guys,

I'm about to head up to the Vancouver area and I haven't been there in a while. Wondering if any of you could provide a good update beyond what has already been said in these past reports (and Un_Circ's site.. thanks a lot for this resource). For instance I am worried about the sting report in my favorite E Hastings low track area. Is there lots of LE now? Also, I have never shopped Surrey before but reading some of the reports it sounds like it might be worthwhile. What times are best?

Lastly I plan to be there for the weekend. On prior trips all the activity I saw on the low-track was confined to nighttime hours. I'm looking for some morning/afternoon/daytime action too. Last year I went driving through the E Hastings low track and couldn't find anything in daylight hours. Does anyone have recommendations here?

LE is not usually a problem on the low assuming you aren't stupid. I have heard of the odd sting on the mid west of commercial but again use your head.

Just back from Vancouver, and have discovered one thing- I need a lot more money if I'm going to travel to Vancouver in the middle of summer.

Couldn't find a decent room for less than .8CAN. Cheapest I found was the Waldorf, no A/C, for .6. Already tried the no A/C while i was in Victoria. No thanks. Stayed for a couple nights at Mid Town Motor Inn, .75 . Not recommended for the money. Actually ended my trip at the (try not to laugh too hard)Cambie Hostel. Definately not recommended, if not for the shared bathroom accomodations, then for the rule of no guests. At all. Period.

One note- my trip across the border. I flew into SEA, and traveled via rental car across the border at the 5fwy. Previous trips had me crossing at 2-3am, with obviously no traffic. Perhaps it was the Molsen Indy, but I waited almost 2 hours to cross, only to be sent to immigration from the checkpoint. I was worried, since I lied and said this was my first triip to CA. At immigration, I was asked standard questions, work, homre add, previous work, length of stay, and was given no hassle, but still wondered what, if anything, I did differently this time. The night crossings didn't even involve looking at my DL, let alone typing info into the terminal they use. Just a few questions, and a wave through. I definately sweated for a few minutes. At any rate, I was given permission to enter. I made a pit stop in Victoria for a night, then continued to Vancouver.

Not my best trip, to say the least, but it wasn't without some adventure.

there's girls that work during the day on mid track (e hastings st from clark dr to semlin dr and blocks north to powell st. e hastings st from semlin dr to nanaimo st) however they can be a little bit tricky to spot due to the business' that operator during the day if you are shopping on a weekday.try near by bus stops and just keep your eyes peeled around alleys the girls wont stand down in the middle of the alley but they we stand a little ways in about 10 feet or so. the business' there have been getting pretty pissed off as of latley with the daytime working girls. they call the cops and all that crap so girls are being much more careful. weekends are pretty good as most of the business are closed!

Day 2

Thanks for the excellent information. I actually saw Chris walking South on Fraser towards Kingsway several minutes before I picked her up. Since it was a nice night and there were other pedestrains out I was not sure at first whether she was working or not.

She did cut through the corner cluster of stores on the North East corner of Fraser and Kingsway before crossing over to the corner where I picked her up. Once on the corner I described (a very sharp angled corner) her behaviour was 100% SW.

i don't know where you're coming from, cold fire, but you might try the aldergrove crossing (several kilometres south of aldergrove, bc and a few miles north of lynden, wa). unless you live in eastern whatcom county, going all the way out to abbotsford to reach vancouver is quite a detour. aldergrove is only open from 8 am to midnight, unlike the other crossings that are 24 hours. the so-called truck crossing at blaine also tends to be less clogged than peace arch. am 1130 (ckwx) has the most frequent border wait reports, and puts out a good signal all the way down to snohomish county.

as for your hassles, i'm another example of how bad it can get for us citizens, and haven't visited canada since last fall because they're demanding an unprecedented amount of documentation on my life that i feel is none of their business. by the way, i have no serious criminal record, and the few scrapes i've had with the law were long ago, almost laughable, and apparently not an issue for the canadians (they didn't mention them last year when i was refused at two different crossings). i believe that one can significantly reduce the chance of being sent in for interrogation and searches by knowing what the booth inspectors look for, and i've detailed the main indicators i'm aware of on my border page. however, it should also be noted that they sometimes go into a random-search mode where they'll send every 10th vehicle inside regardless of how benign the occupants look and sound (this is how they catch the odd grandparents or military folk smuggling dope).

Sorry, can't tell for sure if I've seen her before as I haven't got close enough to see her face. I don't stop for SW on Kingsway because I keep seeing so much police presence and so many stings that I'm spooked about Kingsway.

If you saw her walking up from Fraser Street, you can be assured she's not a decoy. The police decoys rarely walk and, if they do, they don't walk further than a block at the most. Also, never saw them go more than a few feet off Kingsway. I assume this is because they are concerned their backup will lose sight of them.

I drove up Kingsway last night about 11 pm, driving from 12th Avenue to Metrotown. There were only two girls out that I saw on Kingsway. Both were in the stretch between Joyce and Boundary, on the north side of the street. They looked like legitimate SW as I didn't see any police vehicles around.

Well, I'm back from a serious recon mission and I have some in depth information for those curious about the Vancouver lower East side scene. Yesterday I spent the entire afternoon and most of the night hanging out in this area, observing how things work.

Pretty well all day long, SW's are out and about in full force throughout the entire area just North of Hastings, all the way from Granville over to about Commercial. East Cordova is one street up from Hastings, and runs paralell for about three miles or so before it ends at one of the dock bypasses. On the other side of that, Franklin street takes over and for another couple of miles is very busy any time of the day or night.

However, there is a magical area that I discovered that looks to be an absolute goldmine for those looking to cruise *safely* without worry of LE. Because make no bones about it, the entire area is crawling with police all hours of the day, in every direction. Throughout the industrial blocks around Cordova and Franklin the cops are thick, and even though they leave the girls alone I don't know what they will do if there is a car parked on the side with a girl hanging in the window.

Here's what you do - perpindicular to Cordova and Hastings is a street called Jackson, and if you follow this down you will come to a block sized park called Oppenheimer park. This park is where *all* the action is at. Here's what you do - park your car somewhere around the park - it's an easy place to find a spot, and it is all free parking. The park sits between Cordova to the South and Powell to the North. The SW workers walk around the park, starting at about 7pm and continuing all night. You walk around like it is the shopping channel, stopping to chat with whomever you please. When you meet someone you like, take them back to your car and then do whatever. In the five or six hours I sat at a bench in this park I saw probably over 50 SW's and a good half of them were quite healthy and hot. I would say this is definitely half low and half mid track, and needless to say pretty well all of these girls are crackheads (which is a hell of a lot better than heroin junkies). I know this because they were all smoking crack around me, all night long. Other than that they were friendly, cute, and healthy.

I'm not going to get into pricing, etc, because that is part of the fun out there when you are on foot chatting them up. If you walk the length of Cordova/Franklin you will come across all manner of SW workers with pricing in every direction. Needless to say, the safest way to do this is to park your car and hoof it around. The LE is *everywhere* in Vancouver, but they don't seem to care too much what goes on anyway. Twice I saw a girl go into a vehicle with someone, the vehicle pull into the nearby alley just off the park, and the cops swoop in behind them moments later. In both cases, however, they would let the SW go, then a few minutes later let the guy go, and as soon as the cops left those two would just head off again!

There are a lot of very cute girls that hang out in this intersection and park, so take your time and shop around. There are tons of hotels right nearby on Hastings, so if you plan to have a home base check other posts for reports on how that works. I hope I have been clear in this description, for those who don't know where to go you can just follow Hastings all the way down after turning left right off the main freeway and when you get to Main street and such just turn right (North) and park somewhere. You can't miss the area, and even with all sorts of extremely shady crackheads and such around I never felt like there was any danger or anything to worry about and I certainly didn't fit in with that crowd!

That area is called the Low Track. The area around Franklin is the Mid Track.

I was in town ie Vancouver last night the 14th of August and yes the action on E. Cordova and E.Hastings extends into gastown at least. I have seen the sporatic few all over that area but the main stuff is still in the E. Hastings side. However there didnt seem to be as many out as normal. I arrived at the low at appox. 5pm and it was dead with the exception of the hardcore crackheads and junkies until 8pm then it was hit and miss until 2am when I left town.I still got my fill of girls and left a very happy man.

PS. there seemed to be a lot of le pulling over cars on the tranny track and over by the mid.I was all over the place though and never got pulled over which is weird because my car stands out like a sore thumb when cruising for hookers:)

I went out around 3:00am and there was not much out. I drove around but nothing caught my eye. There was a girl in the door way of the Astoria hotel who was cracked out starring into her watch. She looked good in a mini skirt but was too high for a date.

It was about 5 minutes later when both cops came to my car (female at the drivers window, male at the passenger). I see the girl walking away so I assume she said nothing. The female officer says "what is really going on" I said the girl asked to go around the block to warm up and that's what we were doing. The male cops says "Your a John, Your a F'ing lier and you are looking for $10 blow jobs". The male cop has a polish accent. Then he says "don't lie to lady officer tell her the truth". I said "I told you the truth, I do not appreciate your profanity. You obviously have your opinion on what happened and I told you what happened. I guess this is why we have a court system". Then there is a 10 second pause and the female officer says "let me give you some advice, Go home and do not pick up prostitutes". I did two cruises around low track but nothing was good so I cut my loses and went home.

the laws in canada differ from the laws in the u.s. when it comes to entrapment. although it never hurts to ask a street girl right away if she is le, there is no legal obligation on her to answer correctly. it is a wide-spread myth that an undercover police officer has to declare that she is a police officer if asked. if that was the law, the police could never infiltrate any crime group unless the crime group was too stupid to have "are you a police officer - yes/no" on its application form to join the crime group.

prior to the mid 1980's, there was a law against soliciting but the courts in canada held that prostitutes had to be "pressing and persistent" with the same person before they broke the law and a conviction would result.

the law against soliciting was replaced in december, 1985 by a new law (s. 213 of the criminal code) making 'communicating for the purpose of prostitution in a public place' illegal. section 213 forbids 'communicating, or attempting to communicate, to any person in any manner, for the purpose of prostitution' by anyone who is in a public place or who is in a place open to the public or who is in a place in public view. the courts have held that the interior of a private vehicle is a "public place" so it does not matter whether you talk to her while she's on the street or in your car.

this results in the peculiar situation in canada that prostitution itself is not a crime and that the exchange of sex for money is legal provided it is all done in private. "communicating for the purpose of prostitution in a public place", however, is illegal. the practical problem, of course, is how to get a prostitute into a "private place" so you can communicate your intentions!

oh yes. keeping a common bawdy house, being in a common bawdy house and living off the avails of prostitution ("living off the avails" is primarily intended to deal with pimping) are also criminal offences. although these laws could catch mps that routinely offer "extra services", convictions for those charges are hard to come by (especially as most witnesses would be reluctant to come forward). i believe most of the mps that have been busted have been busted for municipal bylaw infractions and/or for failing to report taxable income.

the reason police "sting" operations can be effective in canada is that entrapment is not illegal in canada. undercover police can and often do openly solicit for potential customers in order to arrest them. the courts in canada seem to give police a lot more lattitude than in the u.s. when it comes to what they can or can not say and can or can not do in pursuit of illegal activities.

as a practical matter, however, undercover policewomen will generally not get into the car with you - especially if you make it clear that you are going to start driving and will talk to her while driving. the reason has nothing to do with the law but is more a matter of not wanting to lose their backup or have things get out of control in a high-speed police chase. this is why so many experienced pooners, if they like what they initially see, let the girl get in the car and drive off before discussing services, price, etc...

there is lots of good information on the law in canada and practical advice of avoiding stings in earlier posts on this thread (and in the other threads in canada on wsg). if you are really concerned and want to know about the law in canada on prostitution don't rely on advice from fellow pooners unless you know they are criminal defence attorneys. you can find quite a bit more about the law of prostitution in canada by doing searches on the internet with appropriate keywords.

Wed. Aug. 18.2004 9pm,

Took at walk threw midtrack last night around after not being there in a while! Cops everywhere! It was harsh! Within the course of about 30 minutes I watch 3 SW's with their johns get busted! She's looked fairly new down there. About 5'9 130lbs mid 20's wearing a black and white plaid skirt black tank top. I figured I'd walk further east up franklin yet another attempted to get away from LE and on the cornor of victoria and franklin 2 marked cars had pulled over someone in a grey car older. not sure the make or model. I only seen one person in the car no SW.
At this point i was getting pretty frustrated! Went over to the woldorf for a mikes hard lemonade and tried to wait out the LE.

Sure enough it worked and broke right away after going for my drink! Be so careful in that area lately. I'll be working there again tonight. Give you guys another report tomorrow

lower mainland - they're called microbrothels, and they may be coming to a neighbourhood near you.

they're run out of houses, condos and apartment buildings in residential neighbourhoods. they use asian women, some of whom are in the country illegally.

they're highly mobile operations that, at any sign of trouble, can shut down on a moment's notice and rise like a phoenix in another location.

these elusive operations are bringing the sex trade to new neighbourhoods, angering advocacy groups who link them to [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908), and frustrating police, who claim they don't have the resources to fight them.

simon fraser university criminologist john lowman, who has studied prostitution, says despite the microbrothel moniker, these neighbourhood bawdy houses are nothing new.

"they're ephemeral, they move around and because they're in residential neighbourhoods they're relatively careful," he said. "the truth is, most people do not recognize the prostitution that is going on in their midst on a daily basis."

lowman doesn't know how many brothels exist in the city, but he said one source told him five years ago there were 200 such establishments in the lower mainland.

"the imagination has this lineup of men coming to the front door and winding down the street," he says. "it's not like that ... the truth is most people don't even know they're living next door to one when they are."

lowman says the west end is likely a primary area for neighbourhood brothels, simply because it's easier to run such operations out of an apartment building than a house on a quiet street.

lowman sees little difference between neighbourhood brothels and massage parlours, other than that the latter are legitimized by business licences and allowed to operate in commercial areas. the question, he says, is whether a brothel should be in a residentially zoned area.

"to me the issue is not about prostitution, it's about whether you want businesses being run out of homes," he said. "to me it's irrelevant what the business is."

canadian laws don't take the same lenient perspective toward brothels.

it's a crime in canada to operate a brothel -- defined in the criminal code as a "keeping a common bawdy house" -- and to entice persons into such places for prostitution. canadian laws also make it illegal to live off prostitution or conceal people in a bawdy house

the vancouver police department, which does not distinguish between neighbourhood brothels and unlicensed massage parlours, knows of "several" such operations in the city.

"they are on the radar screen -- it's just a matter of being able to get to them all," said police spokeswoman const. sarah bloor. "we're well aware that some exist, but it's just trying to dedicate resources to it, which we just don't have. . . ."

police have made some inroads in raiding some of the brothels. their latest success came last month on south granville street.

"those are lengthy projects," bloor said. "they take a great deal of time to be able to go in and get warrants and so on."

on aug. 5, vancouver police raided a microbrothel at 53rd avenue and granville -- a well-kept, nondescript rancher with security cameras outside each door -- and arrested seven korean women. they were deported the same week.

immigration papers noted that the korean women were living and working at the house performing "full body massages" for $100, which was paid to them at the end of the night.

one woman, who had worked 10 days at the house, told immigration officials that she learned of the job through an ad in a korean newspaper.

the doorman, a canadian, told an immigration officer that all the women at the house, which opened for business in april, do massages and the customer pays him $180 afterwards. another man told police that he'd pick up customers and drive them to the house for massages.

this isn't just a vancouver issue. other lower mainland cities have seen similar brothels appear in apartments and houses. richmond mounties say they're aware of three such operations.

"it's something that we're monitoring, but it's not a major problem within our community," said richmond rcmp cpl. dave williams. "it doesn't seem as bad as it was a few years ago. we do stay on top of it, but we're not seeing a trend toward a bigger problem."

richmond rcmp raided four brothels in downtown apartment buildings -- all employing malaysians in canada on visitors' visas -- between 1998 and 2000.

rcmp and police suggest that much of this is related to organized criminal networks that operate here and in asia.

while sfu's lowman challenges such claims of "organized crime," he does admit little is known about brothels within the lower mainland's ethnic communities.

"we don't get to get inside the ethnic enclaves," he said. "they're there, but do i know much about them? not really. we hear about stuff . . . but of course those worlds don't intermingle."

the internet -- if it can be trusted -- gives a glimpse into this hidden world.

one website, pacific escort review board [ www.perb.ca ], has a thriving discussion board where clients openly swap information about vancouver's sex industry, from escorts and body rub parlours to street prostitutes and microbrothels.

even if you don't take these online ramblings as gospel -- boasts by anonymous internet posters should be taken with a grain of salt -- there's enough compelling information to suggest the lower mainland's microbrothels are thriving. and the website provides a rare peek into an underground industry.

within a section called vancouver reviews, between ratings of massage parlours and boastful claims of sexual conquests, are revealing comments from internet posters that make for a gripping read.

"buddyboy" wrote about feeling like he was in a "high turnover production line" after his visit to a place called annie's micro.

"enter, have joint shower, token massage, feeble cbj [oral sex with a condom], fs [full sex] and out the door," he wrote. "located in a house in a very residential area. lots of neighbours watching. limited choice when i was there, 2/3 men sitting around chatting in the house. at $120 it was cheap, but the experience was not nearly as pleases [sic] as visiting an sp [sex provider]."

another post by someone nicknamed "timbuk3" complained about not being allowed into one microbrothel because he isn't asian.

"many other micros do have some policy like this. bring a chinese speaking friend along, and you will be fine," advised another.

a poster called "snowboarder" compared the ages between the women working two micros, yoyo and seoul.

"the issue is that, even seoul is selling young korean girls (let say 19-21), the age issue is not the only thing that i will look at. yoyo and other micros also get beautiful and good attitude providers. let say they are not as young but 21-24 is not too bad."

seoul, according to several posters, was the microbrothel raided by vancouver police aug. 5. a discussion thread that included the vancouver sun's article drew considerable feedback.

"seoul was a great place . . . and will be even better next time round," wrote specialty69. "heck they survived firebombs, moving to different municipalities, a bust here and there . . . never stopped them."

other posters talk graphically about their sexual exploits, general locations -- one posting even provides a comprehensive list of the lower mainland's massage parlours -- and places to avoid.

the underground world of microbrothels troubles caitlin johnston, of the asian society for the intervention of aids. johnston deals directly with sex workers through her research and she's heard first-hand stories about these operations.

"i know they exist and i know they're really difficult to find," she said. "it's something that's underground and we do have a hard time finding them. they're below the radar."

johnston is conducting a study on asian sex workers in massage parlours, which she calls "a step up" from these microbrothels, and she's heard "dribs and drabs," including how asian women are treated like slaves.

"a couple of girls we talk to have come from that network of actually being traded or being sold," she said.

johnston says there are three main ways in which women get ensnared by the industry. although it is rare, johnston has heard of situations where a newcomer is befriended by a man who becomes her boyfriend. he gets her hooked on drugs and, once addicted, sells her to a brothel to pay off a drug debt. some women are trafficked from abroad, mostly asia, for a fee, which they're forced to work off through prostitution. "then there are the girls that are actually sent over by the families and whoever is running the brothel is actually sending the money directly to the home back in their country," she said.

the rcmp is well aware of the extent of what amounts to [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) into canada.

an rcmp intelligence report obtained by the vancouver sun through access to information legislation says trafficking is orchestrated by internationally networked criminal groups and mostly involves the sex trade.

"women have entered canada for the sex trade under a variety of circumstances," the report says. "they have been tricked, forced, obligated to a debt payment schedule or, as a permanent commodity, are trafficked from city to city throughout canada and the u.s.a. there have also been cases of canadian girls, coerced or kidnapped, fraudulently entering the usa and forced into prostitution."

the rcmp report estimates that 600 women and children are trafficked into the sex trade in canada annually.

the rcmp also notes the high cost of bringing someone illegally into canada from abroad. to be smuggled into canada from asia, for instance, can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $60,000.

"such significant amounts owed to smugglers represents a potential cumulative debt that may require servicing through illegal activity translating into years of servitude," the report said.

it adds: "women purchased into the slave trade for between $15,000 to $30,000 are required to work off these amounts to gain back their freedom."

the rcmp notes that in countless studies and interviews with prostitutes and trafficked persons around the world, more than half say they were seduced into the business.

how prevalent this is within vancouver's microbrothels remains a mystery. but those familiar with [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) hear stories of an underground circuit that feeds women into the sex industry.

deborah isaacs of mosaic says she has anecdotal information of such activities in vancouver.

"we hear that in certain communities it's much more prominent," says isaacs, who oversees a project that deals with [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908). "we hear there's a circuit. when things get hot, they move to other cities, provinces, even the u.s."

she says such activities continue because there's a lot of denial in canada, both from the public and the government, and there's a lack of protection and help for the victims.

isaacs suggests those visiting microbrothels may even be encouraging a form of slavery.

"by their demands, they are encouraging a type of enslavement of people," she said.

sfu's lowman says some women migrate to join the sex trade.

"they migrate with the intention of being involved in the sex trade business because it's the one thing they can do regardless of which society they find themselves sitting in," he said.

but he also admits many women are trafficked and unknowingly get ensnared in forms of servitude -- and not just in the sex trade.

"they're brought over, they don't know what they're getting into," he said. "even if they do know what they're getting into, they get into these situations of debt bondage where they can't pay off debt ... it's tantamount to slavery and it's unacceptable, regardless of whether it's prostitution or making dresses."

as many as 200 neighbourhood brothels are operating in the lower mainland, according to some estimates. many are believed to be in apartments in vancouver's west end and downtown richmond, but others are on quiet residential streets. the elusive operations are difficult to investigate, police say, because most of the prostitutes and customers are asian.

The only 2 places I found to be acceptable to me were the Biltmore(but I saw they added the gate to their rooftop parking...anyone know if thats accessable at night, or just locked till morning?), and London Guard, both on Kingsway. The only issue I have with the Biltmore is having to enter through the lobby- London Guard is a ways from the low/mid tracks, but provides easy access in and out of your room without giving away what you're doing. The other issue with London is having to have a credit card with enough of a limit for deposit(I think its $100, but I can't remember).
