Perhaps someone with experience in multiple regions like me can chime in as to what makes Medellin / Colombia so special given the above considerations. Personally I don't see it and will be only returning if other options are unavailable.IMO it is, will I return to Colombia? Maybe? I just cancelled my flight for next week due to some important work and family issues.

I liked MDE but when I was there I was looking around thinking, this really doesn't seem like the same place I read about.

He wrote that he hiked the trail to the top of Monserrate in Bogota, without realizing there was a tram that goes to the top. However, you have to walk past the tram and funicular to get to the hiking trail to the top. It would be like being on Liberty Island and not noticing the Statue of Liberty.

He wrote about a midget hooker working Parque Bolivar, although nobody else has seen her, and as most people know, most of the hookers in the Parque Bolivar area are trannies.

Perhaps my favorite is when he said he ordered the Tomahawk at Colosal and it was all fat. Getting any type of steak in Colombia that's mostly fat is about as likely as finding a 25 year old hooker, with 3 kids, who is a virgin. The problem with Colombian beef is a lack of fat. There are no cameras on the metrocables. They wouldn't do much good anyway. The metrocables have tinted and scratched plexiglass windows. It's difficult to see through. It's my biggest complaint about the metrocables, because it's difficult to take any good pictures.

Let's talk about the metrocables, shall we? Each car holds up to 8 people. The plexiglass is tinted and because it's plexiglass, it's scratched. At the top there are vents, but if the car is full it's stuffy and hot. As anyone who has tried to take pictures through tinted, scratched plexiglass can attest, it affects the quality of the picture, probably because you've added a filter of tinted, scratched plexiglass. However, it also makes it difficult to see clearly into the cars, from the other cars. The cars in front and behind are too far away for a clear view, only the returning cars, as they pass are close enough, and then only briefly. But why waste words when pictures show exactly what I stated?

You rode the metrocables 2 days and you don't know if they'll let local teens on? I've ridden all of the metrocables, most several times. There are always teens waiting to ride the metrocables. Someone who has never been to Medellin and never ridden the metrocables might not understand this, but it's a significant point. While the metrocables are used by tourists, they were not built for tourism. They were built for the same reason as the escalators in Comuna 13, to make parts of the city more accessible. It would defeat the purpose if "security" stopped everyone and checked IDs before letting them on. If you had ever tried to ride the Metro or metrocables on election day you would understand how disastrous that would be. For those who don't know, the entire metro system is free on election day and the lines for the metrocables are extremely long.

One last metro point. You won't find graffiti in the Metro trains either. Are you suggesting no teens are allowed on the trains?

If you tell a taxi you want to go to Monserrate, the driver is going to drop you right in front of the ticket station to catch the tram or funicular, unless you specifically tell him to keep going and drop you 50 yards further up because you want to hike to the top. Go ahead and find me a Bogota taxi driver who is going to assume a middle aged gringo wants to hike to the top instead of taking the tram or funicular?

Do a search for Monserrate and you'll find pictures and descriptions of the tram and funicular, whether you go with Trip Advisor, Wikipedia or the Monserrate official website. Sorry, but I'm not going to believe any monger wouldn't be able to figure out that one of Bogota's top attractions has ways to get there other than hiking up a mountain, especially not a monger who claims to have mongered in so many places.

If your reason for thinking about taking the bus was to see the landscape, and you had been advised against it, why take the bus at 8 pm? There are flights leaving practically every hour until almost midnight, it takes less than an hour and tickets start at $21. The bus tickets start at 71 k, or $18.

Of course then I have to wonder why you would ask Mr. E. I just can't see him ever taking a 10 hour bus ride to save $3. I'd ask someone like The Tallman who has driven the route several times.

Earlier I remembered a particular trip I took in the Metrocable to Parque Arvi. It was with my roommate and her (now ex) boyfriend. This was the second trip the 3 of us took to Parque Arvi. The first time the boyfriend drove, which was a mistake. The purpose of the second trip was to take some pictures of my roommate on the metrocable and in the park for her webcam page.

On the way up we had a car to yourself once we left Santo Domingo. My roommate stripped down and her boyfriend started taking pictures. He was a bit annoyed that she was taking her clothes off in front of me, even though I saw her naked nearly every day. Here's the situation at my home:

I share a 2000 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, ranch style house with one of my brothers. Obviously we each have our own bedroom and bathroom. On a typical week I arrive home late Saturday night, after my brother is asleep, with his bedroom door closed. My bedroom door is also closed all night. Before 7 am my brother leaves the house for church, while I'm still asleep. Even if my door was open, he passes at least 10 feet away. After church he has 2 side jobs he does and then usually works on someone's car until 6 or 7 pm. When he returns home, if he doesn't go directly to bed he'll sit in the living room, 12 feet away from me, for seldom more than a hour. He passes briefly close to me a few times, one day a week. On Monday morning he leaves for work before I wake up and I usually leave for work before he gets home. I don't return home again until Saturday night, after he is asleep.

In addition, I've been vaccinated. During the week, I'm rarely around anyone and I am almost always wearing a mask. My brother works with the public, most of whom refuse to wear a mask or get vaccinated, the same as him, and his customers, like him scoff at the effectiveness of social distancing.

There was a time last year, when I came home much earlier than normal and found he had guests at the house. I kept on driving and told him to call me after they left, because I refused to expose myself to the additional risk.

On the weekend when he was sick, I just happened to get home early Saturday afternoon, something that occurs about twice a year. According to the Israeli study, or the link you posted, the Pfizer vaccine is only 38% effective at preventing infection from the Delta variant. It doesn't mention other variants. It also doesn't mention the effectiveness of other vaccines. It goes on to say (and this is the rather important part that you somehow failed to mention) that the Pfizer vaccine is 88% effective against preventing hospitalization from the Delta variant and 91% effective against preventing severe illness.

You do understand why that part is important? Catching any virus isn't really a big deal unless you get seriously ill and / or require hospitalization. A vaccine which eliminates 91% of the problematic cases is a big plus. Of course you have to combine it with public policy to minimize the spread, but keeping 88% of the people out of the hospital, who would otherwise be taking up hospital beds greatly assists in the ability to treat those who weren't smart enough to get vaccinated.

As for his other points:

1. If you're not vaccinated you will get it. Some people will, either through natural immunity, acquired immunity through asymptomatic infection, or through the random chance of never coming in contact with an infected person, will never knowingly become infected. However, if they acquired immunity through asymptomatic infection, or with minimal symptoms, they could still infect other people who, not only could infect others, but who could have more serious, even fatal infections. However, as we've seen with other viruses which have been widespread, odds are, if you're not vaccinated, you're going to get it. If you are vaccinated, odds are in favor of you eventually getting it. All the vaccine does is vastly improve your chances of not ending up face down on a hospital bed with a tube in your lungs while your family stands outside waiting for your final breath.

2. The longer a disease circulates the more it mutates. That one is simple. Just for discussion assume that 1 of every 10,000 will mutate and 1 of every 10,000 mutations will be a successful mutation. That gives us 1 successful mutation out of every billion replications. If the virus replicates 10,000 times per infection, then every 10,000 cases on average yields one successful mutation. The more cases, the more mutations. Please note, those are just made up numbers to illustrate the point. It doesn't matter what numbers you use, the more people become infected, the more likely the virus will mutate.

As far as mutations go, we don't need to worry about mutations which make the virus less communicable. Which leaves us with the Delta variant. The original strain had an infection factor of 2. 5, on average an infected person would infect 2. 5 people. The Delta variant number is between 3. 5 and 4. So let's run the numbers through 4 rounds of infections. The original strain the first person infects 2. 5, who each infect 2. 5, etc. Giving us, after 4 generations, 39.0625 infected people, call it 40. At 3. 5, Delta gives us 150 infected people. At 4. 0 the number jumps to 256. Each subsequent wave of infections increases the deviation between the 2 different variants. 100 times more infectious, would depend on how far out you project the curve. Here's the link which might fill you in on the subject. Just for fun after 10 waves, at 4. 0 Delta gives 1,048,576 infected people. Alpha gives 9,537, which is about 1100 times as many infections.

No photos taken outside the gondolas looking into the gondolas, no photos taken showing cameras mounted on the poles and no photos taken of the landscape from inside the gondola, except for one photo which shows how difficult it is to see into another gondola. If that was your goal, you accomplished the opposite of your intent.

The other possibility is that you hoped to pass the photos off as proof you rode the metrocables twice.

Earlier you asked about buying a large sum of Colombian pesos at a good rate, $5,000 or $10,000 dollars worth. Others, others who have actually been to Colombia, advised against it. The Colombian peso is not extremely stable in the best of times. With Covid, and now the Delta variant, the political unrest and rioting, now would be a bad time to invest in a large amount of Colombian currency, especially for someone who has never been to Colombia, and probably never will go to Colombia.

I'll go back a bit further.

In 2014, my first time in Colombia, the exchange rate was 1900 to 1. Over the next 18 months it rose steadily to over 3200, before dropping back to 2900. It bounced around 2900-3000 for 2 years before rising to 3200. If you bought at the peak, 3200, the best you would have done was save 10%, if you only spent pesos when the rate dropped back to 2900. However, if you missed the peak by just a few weeks, you would have been lucky to break even. If you had decided to buy when the rate, percentage wise, rose the same amount as it had risen when you asked about buying $5000-$10000 worth, you would have lost over 30% of value.

Last year, a BM staying in Bogota went out and withdrew a bunch of money because the exchange rate had jumped up. The rate continued to rise, although later it came back down. However, if I remember correctly, shortly after some chica stole his big stash of pesos.

For someone who lives in Colombia, but receives an income from the US, it might make sense to withdraw extra funds when the rate is favorable, or to make major purchases at the right time, but it's unlikely to represent a huge difference. If you're buying a moto at 4 million pesos, you save 8% buying it when the rate is 4000, instead of 3700. However, you might have to wait 6 months to get that rate, and it might top out at 3900 and quickly dive to 3600. Or you might buy at 4000 and 2 weeks later it's 4400.

The best strategy is to withdraw what you need, when you need it. If your budget is so tight getting 10 k less from an ATM withdrawal is going to ruin it, you should just continue to stay home and pretend to travel.

Had I received a positive test, the people who came to pick me up would have insisted I remain in isolation, since one is a Registered Nurse who has been working with Covid patients for the past 16 months.

1. Colombia can't extradite me. They have to first charge me with a crime.

2. Colombia can't extradite me. After charging me with a crime, they have to provide evidence to the State Department, which would then pass the matter to the Department of Justice. Such a decision could take months.

3. Colombia can't extradite me. First they have to establish that I violated a law by entering their country, by not getting a test which they didn't require. That's going to be tough.

Mostly this thread is just a bit of fun for me. I've been in this environment most of my life, slinging insults with no real animosity. It's part of growing up in a big family, part of serving in the military and part of working blue collar jobs around guys who have had to work for everything in life. If X gets infected with Covid, X needs to go into quarantine for 14 days. Then X can schedule a visit with a doctor (who will come to wherever X is staying, check X's condition and write X a Certificate of Recovery. X can show the positive Covid test and the certificate of recovery and be allowed to return to the United States.

If X tries to find a lab which will put themselves at risk to give him fake negative test results, then X can fly back to the United States, if he succeeds.

Or X can find out that the testing lab will inform the Colombian health ministry that a foreigner, who has tested positive for Covid, is trying to get someone to falsify test results for him and is putting others at risk by failing to quarantine. Then X can learn that being forced to quarantine by the government of Colombia is more expensive than voluntarily quarantining.

X might also learn that he is no longer welcome in Colombia and will be refused entry in the future.

X may also learn that, after forced quarantine, and returning to the US that the airline he wanted to use falsified test results to fly on, while infected and contagious, has banned him from ever flying again.

Considering that knowingly violating US law, while infected with a deadly disease, is probably a felony, X might learn he's permanently banned from ever flying again, after spending some time in prison and paying a heavy fine.

If X isn't an idiot and knows, if he becomes infected with Covid, he can't afford to spend 14 days in quarantine, then X won't make the trip.

Two months ago I was X. Two days before I was supposed to fly back to the US, 3 days before I was supposed to be back at work, I tested positive for Covid. When I received the test result, I immediately contacted the hotel and informed them I needed to quarantine. Then I sent a message to my boss to let him know I would not be back to work for an additional 2 weeks.

After that I began the nearly 36 hour process of contacting Delta Airlines to inform them I would not be able to fly. While I was waiting to talk to someone I informed the people who I had been in contact with. I also posted my status on ISG in case I forgot to contact anyone.

10 days after my positive test, 4 days after my symptoms had disappeared, a doctor came and checked me out and gave me a certificate of recovery. 3 days later, I flew back to the US.

I will tell you what I tell everyone. It is great to have that view but when you come to a hospital with low oxygen levels and tell a staff you are not vaccinated, you are going to get horrific comments and care from a medical staff.

I told a woman about this who was unvaccinated and she went off on what medical staff was saying but when she is sick, she is not going to be able to talk. It is not just staffs that are sick of the stupidity, it is also that these patients are spreading the disease around.
