Grabbed a cab from in front of the NG. Listed fare from Sosua to Costambar is $45us. My $40us offer was quickly accepted by the same driver that picked me up from the airport. Along the way we took a tour of Puerto Plata and the Malecon. It was quite a ride. The driver used the car alarm instead of the car's horn whenever he passed a motto / car or went through an intersection (traffic lights & stop signs are just guidelines in the DR). There were points during the ride I had to close my eyes. Anyway I arrived at Black Beards around 6:30pm.
Side note: Driver picked his son up from school on the way out of Sosua and dropped him off at a taxi stand in some little village just outside of Sosua. Sign at village taxi stand showed a 500 pesos price for a ride to Costambar. What a 'rip'. $13us for locals, $40us for gringos.
Arrival.
I was warmly welcomed by the manager who quickly took care of the paper work and explained the rules and services available. Rules are very reasonable and sensible. 'No outside booze or food, if you have it kept it in your room'. Makes sense to me. This is one way the hotel makes a profit and I found the prices of booze, beer and food to be reasonable. The other major rule was basically 'don't be a jerk'. He also apologized for the Jacuzzi being repaired. No big deal. There were plenty of other things to occupy my time.
Next the manger took me on a tour of the hotel. The common areas were nice, well maintained and very clean, no trash, cigarette butts or towels lying around. The layout is great. There is an open air bar with several high top tables with chairs and several over stuffed chairs. The pool looked inviting and had a bunch of plastic lounge chairs around it. Off the pool was a patio area with picnic tables and umbrellas. A small open air restaurant was just off the bar. The lobby had conformable chairs & sofas, a computer for guest use, and a pool table.
I was them introduced to the Mamasan who showed me the board with pictures of the available chicas and asked if I had any preferences. I told her I just wanted to get a feel for the place and I would find her if I had any questions or requests. Never needed her services but I did find the board useful. There were so many chicas it was hard to keep track. I often checked the board to put a name to a face.
My room.
I was showed to room D2, at the top of the stairs, on the left just off the disco's entrance. My original thought was this is not good; the noise from the disco will be a distraction and keep me up all night. But I soon learned that BB runs on a very different schedule then Sosua. It was never a problem.
The room was great. It was large, with a king bed, end tables, moveable minor, love seat, coffee table, dinette table w / two chairs, windows on two sides, two large cabinets with hanging and shelf space, tube type TV, good size frig, A / C, ceiling fan, proper lighting and a keyed safe. The bathroom needed updating but was also large with plenty of vanity space. And guess what? Everything work! A rarity in the DR.
Food.
The food at BB is decent and fairly priced but the menu is limited. Two mornings I had eggs. Another day I had a cheese burger for lunch. The burger was large and came with fries. It was just ok but that was because the beef in the DR is nothing like what we get in the states. For dinner I had a grilled pork chop, fettuccine Alfredo, and chicken Fajitas twice. All were very good & under 300 pesos.
The kitchen was a bit slow in getting out the food. When I was dinning with a chica or enjoying a cocktail & the eye candy I did not mind. But it was obvious one afternoon. A crew from Sosua was in the process of ordering lunch when I was offered a ride to the grocery store. When I returned they were still waiting for their lunch. At times it was difficult to get the attention of the waitresses. I soon learned to get my own menu and condiments.
One afternoon I had lunch on the beach which was great. The menu listed a quarter of chicken with rice and beans. I was expecting either a piece of fried, roasted or BBQ chicken. Instead I got pieces of boneless chicken breasts cooked in a yellow sauce. It looked awful but was actually delicious. The combination of curry and pineapple gave the sauce a unique taste.
I did not see any restaurants except for the beach shacks during my wondering around Costambar but two guys I meet knew a couple and ate out several times. Unfortunately our schedules never matched. They were morning guys and I was always in the middle of my evening session when they were ready for dinner.
Security.
Unlike Sosua there are no security issues at BB. You are not going to get mugged, robed, or cheated and you do not have to worry about crazy drugged up chicas. Just use common sense and all will be good. I was concerned about the keyed safe and asked the guys where they hid their keys. I got a strange look and was told that they did not hide the key. So my key to the 'mother lode' and a couple thousand pesos were always lying around either in my pants pockets or on the table. I never had an issue. One evening l left my hat and cigarettes on the bar. When I returned several hours later they were still there untouched.
I was also told it was safe to walk around Costambar and night but I don't know why you would. It's very dark and there is no place to go. Bring a small flash light if you think you will be going out at night. You will need it.
During the day Costambar is a small mixed community consisting of some high end villas, middle of the road condos and of course the typical run down or abandon or never completed properties. It's a quiet community with only a few European tourists and upper middle class Dominicans wondering about. There was some poverty but not extreme. No one was panhandling. There were a few vendors on the beach, a lady wanting to brad hair, a lady selling fruit, a guy selling ice cream. But they were few and far between. I felt comfortable and safe exploring Costambar.
Customer Service.
Service was excellent. Check in / out was efficient. The maid did a great job cleaning & straighten up my room which was always a wreck after the prior night's activity. I never got up before 11:00am and by the time I had coffee or something to eat and went back up she was done. The barmaids were also great. Never had to ask twice for anything
BB is serious about customer satisfaction. A manage & Mamasan were always present and watching. They were around the bar and pool during the day, bar & restaurant at night and in the disco. They watched the guest to see how they behaved, what they spent their money on, what they liked and disliked. They also watched the girls & staff to see how they interact with the guests. If there was a lull in the disco the Mamasan would make the girls get off their butts and dance and mingle with the guests.
BB's management will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the place is running efficiently and the guests are enjoying themselves. If you are not an asshole, spend a few bucks and have a problem go to them, if possible they will fix it.
Guests.
Hooked up with Peter and Gary the first afternoon both were BB veterans and cool guys. Peter was from Staten Island and work for the NY Post. Gary was a financial advisor from Rochester, NY. Hung with these guys during the afternoons at the pool and partied with them in the disco.
Meet Harry, Friday afternoon at the pool. He is a regular who goes down ever few weeks for long weekends. He rolled slower than Peter, Gary and I. He spent the afternoons at the pool reading and talking with anyone who came buy. Around 4pm he would disappear with a chica and would not be seen again until the disco open. He would then select a chica and sit in corner with her until it closed. Then disappear until the following afternoon.
Willie was another story. He had to be pushing 70 and was doing the chicas nonstop. He book back to back appointments all afternoon and evening. Then he would party in the disco with his harem until it closed. I have no idea how many went back to his room but I bet more than one.
Maurice an accountant from DC showed up every day. He had a condo around the corner and would spend the day hanging out at BB. A cool guy who had a SUV and did not mind driving guys around.
There were several crews but they kept to themselves and only came out of their rooms to pull a chica.
Chicas.
The Black Beard chicas can compete with the best that Sosua has to offer. They ranged from attractive to beautiful, were young (early 20's) , came in all shades and had great bodies. Most had limited English & my Spanish is zero but we found creative and fun ways to communicate. A few had stretch mark issues but were still very doable. Hint: If she is wearing a one piece bathing suite there may be stretch mark issues.
What sets the BB chicas apart from the typical Sosua chica is their attitude. They are not aggressive at all. Sure it's about the money and they gave their sales pitches whenever possible but they did it in a very subtle way. They were not constantly hanging all over me, grabbing my dick and whispering in my ear all the lies about the nasty things they wanted to do. They did not approach until I showed interest or another chica introduced them. Once contact was made they took it slow. They had no problem spending time sharing a drink, talking (the best we could) and general just being playful until a decision was made. If I lost interest they gracefully move on.
Once the chicas got to know me and how I roll they were a lot of fun. I enjoyed just spending time hanging with my 'regulars' at the pool, in the bar & disco. And they enjoyed my company as much as I did theirs. Sitting at the bar staring off into space or into your drink, hiding in your room or being cheap will result in a bad experience. The key is to develop a friendship by treating them well and interacting with them. Trust me, the chicas do not want to sit around being board all day and night. The chicas start arriving around 11am. By noon they are all in their bathing suits. Around 6pm the evening crew arrives in casual attire. Some of the day chicas do stay for the evening shift. By 8pm they are all dressed to empress and ready for the disco.
Short term 'happy hours' worked real well at Black Beards. For the most part the chicas hangout / hunted in pairs so I was assured of a compatible team. None of the sessions were true PSE girl on girl sessions but the girls were not shy and most did not have any problem with some girl / girl kissing and groping. The happy hours provided variety and livelier sessions. There is nothing sexier then have two beautiful chicas trying to outdo each other. The happy hours also provided some insurance. General info.
Defiantly bring / buy some booze, beer, soda & water for the room. The hotel's bar shuts down at midnight & you will want provisions for late night room parties. About half of the waist high refrigerator was available. No one said anything when I stocked it with beer and bottled water. But in a pinch I used the hotel's stuff from the frig. It was fairly price and convenient. The frig was restocked daily and what I used was charge to my bill. I did not keep track of what was consumed but it was considerable. We hit the frig hard a couple of nights so the $30us I was charge at checkout seemed reasonable.
A pharmacy and Yenny's is an easy walk from BBs. Yenny's is small grocery store that stocks just about everything you need, beer, soda, water, condoms. The pharmacy was closed the day I was in town so I have no Intel.
Bring more condoms than you think you will need. I went through a large box this trip and had to buy the local brands. Happy hours require numerous condoms and the chicas used condoms on the toys. A package of 3 can be purchased at BB's bar for 150 pesos. Don't buy the local brand at Yenny's (20 pesos for 3) the girls hate them. Go for the American type for 80 pesos. I think they were called RoughRiders.
Make sure you bring enough cash. Your BB bill can be paid with a credit card but it will cost an extra 20. I did not see any banks or ATMs.
Do not run a tab at BBs. Pay in pesos as you go. I don't believe they would intentionally pad your bill but mistakes can happen and you avoid sticker shock at check out. Paying as you go allows you to keep better track of how much money you spent & what you have left. A 10% tip is automatically added to all food & bar bills. I also left whatever small change I got back.
The front desk's exchange rate was RD36 to $1us and Viagra / Cialis were available. If I recall correctly two pills for 150 poesos.
Money can also be changed at Yenny's at a great rate. I got 38. 40 to the dollar. The best I did in Sosua was 38. 25. It's safe and easy. Just see the man at the back of the store. He has a small office where the transaction takes place.
Free Wi-Fi covered the entire hotel including the common areas and my room. My Claro' phone worked fine also.
How I rolled on Wednesday
The first night was a disappointment. By the time I checked in and cleaned up it was 8pm. My first stop was the bar where I approached a cute spinner sitting on the stool next to me. She had the looks I go for cute face, great eyes and smile, killer spinner body, and soft shoulder length curly hair that highlighted her face. But it was quite painful trying to get something going because she was so shy. The manager who was keeping an eye on me to make sure I was settling in saw this and got the Mamasan. I decided that I could deal with this for a while so I poured us a couple of Dewar's and laid down beside her. After a couple of more drinks I had enough. I undress, pulled her clothes off & tried to get something going but nothing I did worked. I then made a critical mistake and broke my 'get yours first' rule. I offered her a massage. My thought was a nice back rub would relax her and on the flip side a titty and pussy massage would get her going. The first part of my assumption was correct. I had a pleasant and not so pleasant supprise at the airport. Found out I was upgraded to first class even though I was traveling on a frequent flier ticket. Got to the gate without a problem. About a half hour before departure I head my name being called over the PA system. Seems that TSA wanted to search my checked bag and I had to be present. I figured my dive gear look suspicious in the x-ray. My concern was I would miss the plane. The Continental representative assured me that they knew I was with her and they would hold the plane. I'm thinking yea, right! Any how I was not the only one from the flight who were having their bags searched. And I was right they wanted to go through my dive bag. Unfortunately my toys were also in the bag. Of course the storage bag for my toys was right on top so that was the first thing they go through. The young kid actually doing the searching thought it was very funny & was showing the toys to his supervisor who did not think it was funny at all. All I wanted to do was craw under a rock and die. Anyway my bag and I survived the search and I made the plane. 4 hours later I'm back in New Jersey with only memories of a great vacation.
Conclusion:
On check out John the owner took me aside and said he knew I was a member of the board and asked if I had a good time. I said I thought his place was great and the only complaint was that two bath towel just did not make it. His response was 'our goal is to please the customer and make right whatever we can, a couple of bath towels would have been a simple fix, why did you not say something? ' I did not have an answer for him.
Black Beards is a first class operation. Don't be cheap or an a-hole and you will have a safe and great time. I'm a convert and will return in June. If I can set up some hassle free diving I'll spend the entire week at BBs. If not I'll spend a couple of days in Sosua diving and partying them a few days at BB.

Do not run a tab at BBs. Pay in pesos as you go. I don't believe they would intentionally pad your bill but mistakes can happen and you avoid sticker shock at check out. Paying as you go allows you to keep better track of how much money you spent & what you have left. A 10% tip is automatically added to all food & bar bills. I also left whatever small change I got back.I have stayed at BB four or five times and always used the tab rather than paying as I go. I know they add 10% but my understanding is that money gets redistributed back to the BB's staff. The bartenders indicated they sometimes got part of the tip and sometimes not so how the 10% gets distributed may be somewhat suspect. I always check on my bill as the stay progresses so I am not surprised and they are always happy to give you a daily total any time you ask. I guess it is a personal choice but I find it much more convenient to not have to carry pesos around while at the resort. Then again I am not the type to get drunk and spend a bunch of money buying drinks and forgetting I bought them. I am only commenting since I do not feel that always paying as you go is either the best or only way to go.
The beer / water / pop and chips in the room are the same price as if you bought them at the bar so you are not overcharged for using the drinks from the mini-fridge. The bottles of booze I can not comment on since I normally do not drink mixed drinks.

Preface.
I finish dinner around 10pm and returned to the bar where I meet Barbra. Barbra had a great sales pitch. She was very outgoing & gave little lap dances. Eventually she asked if I'm going to take her up stairs. I was a bit turned off by the direct approach & started to have second thoughts so I said maybe later. She then explained that there would be no 'later' because the bar was closing and everybody was going home. I could not believe it. 12am and the party was over. I decided that I could deal with this for a while so I poured us a couple of Dewar's and laid down beside her. After a couple of more drinks I had enough. I undress, pulled her clothes off & tried to get something going but nothing I did worked. I then made a critical mistake and broke my 'get yours first' rule. I offered her a massage. My thought was a nice back rub would relax her and on the flip side a titty and pussy massage would get her going. The first part of my assumption was correct. Unfortunately she became too relaxed and passed out. In the morning she was embarrassed and blamed her behavior on the alcohol. In the bar Barbra was more outgoing and aggressive than the other BB chicas. Basically it was a big mistake to put two 'newbies' together for the night. She had no idea what to do and neither did I. Remember this was my first night at BB and I was still trying to figure it all out. We were like young teenagers having sex for the first time. Also all the booze we drank did not help. Since it was both of our faults I could not complain to the Mamasan or stiff her completely. Hind sight is a wonderful thing. I should have just paid her half the fee and called it even.For those that may encounter something like this in the future here are some thoughts. Dealing with a situation like this is tricky. Your reputation is everything at BB's so if you get known as a complainer the word will get around within the girls. Second complaining to the mamasan about service is pointless. The girls and the mamasan are friends outside of BB's. They don't have a typical boss / worker relationship you think of here. Going up the chain of command beyond the mamasan may work but I have never tried it. So what are your options. Don't pay! Once you don't pay you have the advantage. If you pay your done, your screwed. THE IMPORTANT PART: Now if you decide not to pay you better know you are in the right. I am not saying you go around not paying because the service didn't knock your socks off. But in this case you should not of paid. Some may argue you even set a bad example. There are two excuses that if you go down to the DR enough that are classic I don't want to screw. The 'my baby is sick' and ' the pass out'. Both of these are instant BS.
Several years ago a girl talked me into an all-nighter at around 8:30pm. I bought food and we had a couple of shots. About 10:00 myself and 4 of my wingman and their girls were all talking and having a good time but my girl kept falling asleep on my shoulder. I didn't get mad that she was tired but at the same time it wasn't my problem and I wasn't going to deal with it all night. So I told her the all-nighter was off. Maybe I've been lucky or my age has given me a better sense of people, but I have many friends (in the true sense of the word) down here. Let's start with a few examples, the first friend I ever made down here, a kid from AVIS rent-a-car (tourist location) , who cleans cars and drives people back and forth from the airport. When I first got here he was learning English and I Spanish, he wanted to practice so after a few trips we exchanged numbers, he calls me often (never beeps me for the return call) , I've been to his house for dinner, met his family, his fiancee, I've called him in the middle of the night for a ride, go to the beach with my novia and his (we bring food and drinks from home) he reaches into his pocket to pay (a rare occurrence for a Dominican male). I've never given him a single peso, the one time he picked me up from the airport at the middle of the night, I offered to give him the going taxi rate and he declined, thnly thing I did do was put gas in his car. It was appreciated but not expected.
Working girl, I befriended a working girl and at first it was a pay for play relationship, which was as expected. However, I was very taken by her personality after getting to know her for a while. I've helped her out with loans (which have been re-payed in full and on time, something I've done for many friends in the past). Again, I know her family and have been to her house many times for dinner, I know her kids her friends and never been hit upon for money other than the 2 loans which were repaid.
3 different regular girlfriends, all of which were not gold diggers in any sense of the word. Granted the relationship is lopsided as I like to go out and enjoy life, but with any relationship I've ever been in the man always pays the lion's share. But these girls buy me gifts look to save me money when possible, etc. My live in girl takes care of my apartment and all my needs, she works as a manicurist and all money she makes is shared with me. (right now she is out buying my birthday present with her money, I think it's a recliner but not sure).
No for the bad, these people had the potential for becoming friends but never quite got there. A neighbor is a carpenter, and when I was throwing out a box spring he asked if he could have it, we got friendly and he started doing odd jobs around the house (for pay) , I had him refinish some end tables and they came out great and the price could not be beat, they came out like new. After a few odd jobs, I got to trust him and payed him upfront to create some custom screens for my apartment (1, 500 pesos, not much) they never got done and before I could look for him he had moved.
Co-worker with my girl wanted 2 DVD players (1 for her and 1 for her sister) , I bought 2 from wal-mart at less than $40 each. I brought them to her and she told me she would pay after she got the money from her sister, I trusted her (big mistake). I never got paid, she left her job to avoid paying me. However, we knew where she lived and I went there with a police officer acquaintance of mine and relieved her of her cell phone (a BB) , which more than covered the debt.
So to end a long story that I'm sure none of you are interested in, there are good and bad people here like there are anywhere. You just have to be careful, just like anywhere.
One final note, I think the working girls here if they had a better choice would not choose this life. In the states the working girls are doing this more for drug money than anything, but the vast majority of girls here do it to help their families, which is sad. I treat everyone as person and with respect until they demonstrate they do not deserve it. For the people that cheated me in life, they may have gained a few bucks but they are missing out on having me as a friend.

So very true.When I first started to go to the DR (BB's for the most part) I was nothing more than a "walking ATM" or Santa proud of the way I was able to meet so many new friends in such a short amount of time. I had so many "friends"with their hands in my pockets it felt like a massage. One positive out come was the weight lose I experienced on my first few trips, in my wallet! I will say that over time I became wiser and do have a few "real friends" by anyone's definition in the DR. My definition of a DR friend is simple:
1. Never asks for money 2. Never has a sick child, relative or friend that needs money 3. Never even hints that money is needed for anything or anyone 4. Never talks about how bad work / their house / method of transportation is 5. Never talks about about how expensive private schools are 6. Never talks about the high cost of food / medicine / clothes for their children is 6. Never discusses the English class or other classes / training that they would like to attend.
The real DR friends I do have keep in touch via email or Facebook. They share photos and other information but have never asked for financial assistance either directly or indirectly. I have experienced over time that my DR friends have saved me from myself, offered sound advice and have shown that they could be trusted. I can could not ask for much more from them.

All my posts are aimed at newbies. I don't want to try and tell guys who have been here more than a couple of times what is right or wrong, or what to do or not do. Many of them know a lot more than me, and the rest should have learned enough after a couple of trips to be responsible for their own actions. So, just to the newbies in the tourist areas (and other newbies are rare here) , I would just say,"Never give a Dominican a chance to disappoint you" as they will surely accept it sooner or later.

I am a black american 52yrs young. In decent shape, and a newbie to the mongering scene. Only spent time in Sosua. 3 trips under my belt since Oct 2011. Aside from the wealth of info from the members contributing in this forum I don't know much else about BB, but would love to know more. Me and a dude I met in Sosua last Nov are both going to BB the end of Jan 2012 for 2 days, and then off to Sosua for the remainder of our trip. What I'd like to know specifically is what can I expect once I arrive at BB from the staff, from the chicas etc? What is a good way to get started after I check into my room? I know I will look like the new kid on the block to everybody there, and I would love to avoid making too many obvious mistakes right off the bat.
I might want to start off getting something to eat / drink. (I already know to go to Jennys to exchange money, still have some Pesos left over from my Nov trip to Sosua). Some tips from over 20+ visits to BB's.
BB's Golden Rule for the BEST experiences: Discuss everything before doing anything!
Rules / Personal Recommendations:
1. When in doubt ask the Mamisan or a Manager. It would be difficult to shock them. BB's is like Burger King, ask and you CAN have it you way, just maybe not with the one you are drooling over.
2. ST = 2 hours (discuss # of pops)
3. Flirting by the pool (no sex in the pool) , buying her a drink or some food is great. Just don't lead her on if all you want to do is flirt. She may not care if the place is slow and she is just waiting with not much better to do. Remember to you its a vacation to her its a job.

I followed the whole conversation on novia in the D. R with rapt attention - indeed kudos to all for their candor. It was interesting for me from a number of view points and I thought I would throw my two cents worth of thinking around this.
1. I have no expectation of a chick in D. R (perhaps elsewhere as well) of permanency. Simply because I am not promising anyone that. So this whole expectation of fidelity is not germane to me. Of course, Sosua is a different animal (for me at least) and it would be absurd to expect more than a good time and perhaps good friendship but I think to expect anything more is to set oneself up, unless one is also ready to make a commitment.
2. I have moved away from Sosua after the first time but even at other places, I really do not have any expectation. I know a woman who is "casada" who wants to see me, a woman who is pregnant (not by me. LOL) and a bunch of others that are happy to see me. I have let go of a sosua girl who was getting possessive. A report that belongs in the Sosua Reports forum. The only problem I have with this forum is that the postings are not instant. You have to wait before you see your message posted, that is a nuisance. Oh I forgot, even though I will get all of my info when I get to BB, I still would like to know how long is ST with the chicas? Is it an hour. 2 hours?Management tells you that ST is up to two hours. The bottom lines is that nobody likes to be played or lied to unless we are doing the playing and lying. The chicas do what they do to survive. We do what we do for fun. At BB's the prices are the prices. I love it because you can budget your daily recreational activities. One thing I make clear with my ST dates is that I want to take my time and not rush. It takes the pressure off and lets both of us relax and enjoy the moment. For LT (over night) I make sure they know (when possible) what I want to do for the evening so they know how to dress. Often I like to go off site to a various restaurants or go out to a casino. I do not like staying at the disco upstairs for the entire night but prefer to relax in my room with a drink or two and just relax. As far as I know prices are not negotiable at BB; ST=1600, TNL=3000 regardless of services provided. Last two trips I had no problem finding accommodating companionship in Sosua for 1000 ST & 2000 TLN. You will go nuts trying to negotiate each service.

Thanks1. There is a small A Clero store, pharmacy and grocery store (yenny's) as you enter Costambar. Have the taxi driver stop on your way in or it's a short walk from BBs. They have the basics you need. Money can also be exchanged at Yenny's at a great rate. See the man in the back. Another option is negotiate with the taxi drive to stop at a large supermarket in Puerto Plata on the way in. I'm sure it could be arranged for a small tip. Keep in mind that hard goods especially hygiene items more in the DR they the US.
2. Send an email to BBs. I sure they will give you pricing on the tours. Taking a chica on an outing is something I also want to do on my next trip. Not sure how compensating the chica would work. But I bet if you promised them a ST session when you return they would be will to accompany you on a 1/2 day tour or to the beach. Of course I would expect to pick up all costs including food and drink. Worst case it should cost no more than the TLN rate. Send an email to the attention of Krystal (the BB Mamasan) and ask what would be involved in taking a chica on a tour or to the beach and what it would cost. And let us know how she responds.

Two quick stories from an earlier visit. First, I wanted to go downtown to POP to see the Fort and get the feel for the place. I spoke with the Mamasan brainstorming ideas and the next thing I know she has me set up with one of the girls that has a car. She tells me the my "date" will drive and show me around if I buy her lunch and pay for the gas. We had a great day and I liked her so much she spent the night and I paid her for the night, gave her a tip and bought breakfast. Second experience was amazing! I had decided to have the same date again the next night and asked her to bring a friend. Being that is was a Tuesday in July and there were only a few "guests" my dates asked if we could go dancing at a club in Playa Dorado my date said she would drive after a quick change of clothes we are about to leave except there were 5 girls walking to the car but only two were my "dates"? I asked my date what was up? She said don't worry baby you on "bacation no problemo mi amor" (this was to become a very common phrase as I would learn in later trips) the girls only want to go dance and they will leave to go home from the club. OK, so I paid for us all to get into the club and I did buy all the drinks for the night which was not that much and the girls always asked before ordering. This was the closest I will ever come to being a celebrity, the girls made sure I was never alone. My dates always asked before they went and danced with some one. .This is how I want to roll on my next trip.

6. Do not be an ASS when you are at BB's (or anywhere in the DR) because you look stupid and it reflects poorly on us all. Treat others as you want to be treated and you will be treated even better. One of the nice things about the Management at BB's is they will not put up with anyone that can not follow their rules or mistreat any of the girls or staff. The girls provide a quality experience to everyone. But each individual experience will vary for lots of reasons.A good reputation at BBs? Priceless! The better your reputation the better the service & the better the time you will have.

1. When in doubt ask the Mamisan or a Manager. It would be difficult to shock them. BB's is like Burger King, ask and you CAN have it you way, just maybe not with the one you are drooling over.
7. Last tip for a great time. BB's can and will do anything to make sure you have a great time. That said it is your responsibility to let them know immediately if there is a problem with any thing or anyone. It makes me (and many others) pissed off to listen to guests that complain to other guests or decide to blackball one of the girls for a poor time / experience etc. And not be willing to speak up to those that can fix the problem. If you speak up and nothing is done then that is a different story. I always talk to the Managers and Mamasan to let them know if things are great as well or if a staff member or one of the girls was outstanding.Very good advice.

Several months ago, I booked a trip to Blackbeard's for two weeks starting during this year's Super Bowl weekend, and while I've had some trepidations about it since, many of your posts here have convinced me that I did the right thing. Last June, I visited the DR for the first time through DR Nights (I'm sure many of you have heard of them). If I had to sum up my experience in one word it would be "Meh." Unfortunately, I didn't find out about BB's until after I got back. I just had a couple of quick questions:
1. I would really like to travel light (no checked baggage) and with today's TSA that means no personal hygiene items. How easy or difficult is it to purchase personal hygiene items once you get to BB's?

Though there are some poor people living there the proportion is very much lower than in the "real" (that is to say, the "ungated") DR. I have sometimes seen one or two outside the gates of Blackbeards but if none there ask one of the staff to call you one.
Average fares?Like many things in Costambar, about double what you would pay in the "real" DR, but still a big saving on taking a private taxi because the Costambar taxis are notoriously expensive. They have a captive market and a closed shop and enforce that with threats and, if necessary, violence against freelance visiting taxi-drivers. I once took a motoconcho from Blackbeards to the centre of Puerto Plata and paid 150 pesos. I didn't haggle or ask the price first. I guess private taxi for the same trip would have been 400 pesos. Much as I dislike private taxis in the DR they do have a big advantage if there are two or more passengers as they charge for the distance, not per person, whereas motoconchos tend to charge per person. The other point is that travelling longer distances along main roads by motoconcho is dangerous. I try to increase my odds of survival on motoconchos by choosing:
(1) an older driver. As Dominican Billy says "you see old motoconchistas, and you see bold motoconchistas, but you never see an old, bold motoconchista".
(2) one with a helmet. A guy who cannot afford a helmet probably cannot afford to maintain his bike or has a macho death-wish.
(3) one with wing-mirrors as if they have paid for these they are less likely to suddenly change lanes without considering who may be overtaking them. This is the biggest cause of accidents, closely followed by ignoring "PARE" and "UNA VIA" signs.
How do you find or contact the JC carrito? What is the JC carrito fare to POP?The JC carrito starts outside the Costambar gate. Last time I used it the fare was 35 pesos. May have gone up to 40 pesos by now. The other terminus is the little "square" opposite the Parada de Sosua, almost next to the hospital. Not quite sure what route they take once they reach La Javilla but I assume they go via Parque Central the same as the Sosua carritos. They run about every half hour in the day and every 15 minutes at peak times when people are starting and finishing work. They stop running around 8. 00pm (maybe later in summer, but don't cut it too fine).
Details on the cheaper transportation options would be appreciated. These options make BB even more appealing.Your other option for getting into or out of Blackbeards is motoconcho to or from the main highway (maybe 100 pesos one way?). Publicos run along the highway every 2 or 3 minutes from about 7am to about 9pm, then gradually thin out to very infrequent in the small hours (2am to 6am). I wouldn't advise waiting alone in the dark at the roadside for a publico after about 8pm. Fare would be about 25 pesos into Pto Pta centre.

ThanksRegarding an outing with a chica, if its just dinner before a TLN, its just part of the job / experience and no one would expect payment for that, but if a day's excursion takes her away from the paying customers, of course its costing her money and she would expect to be paid for her time. She's not on vacation, remember, its not a hobby for her, she's there to pay the rent, feed the kids, etc.
How much should be negotiated in advance.
I would suggest taking a chica on her day off. In that case, she is not losing money and most would go along for just the entertainment, food, drink, etc, and probably just a reasonable gift (swimsuit, clothing item, etc).

JJVery safe but I don't know if I would walk anywhere on the planet with large amounts of money on me. It is close enough whereas you could make several trips to there over the course of your stay, you probably will anyway because you will need something or want to stock your room with bottled water, soda, snacks etc. Don't try to do it at night, it is pitch black on those roads. For 30-50 pesos you could have a concho take you also.

First of all the only faces except one are of me and two of my wingmen and none of us could give a fuck if it was posted on the front page of the New York Times. More importantly all of these pics were taken during the bikini contest. Any guy who sits poolside during the bikini contest knows damn well that there are a half dozen guys with cameras taking photos sometimes many more than that so I would assume they don't give a fuck either. I understand the concern of someone that was relaxing by the pool when there wasn't a contest going on and some idiot was taking photos but the person that needs the privacy has to have some level of responsibility, remember the bikini contest is open to the public, this is NOT a private affair.

Regarding an outing with a chica, if its just dinner before a TLN, its just part of the job / experience and no one would expect payment for that, but if a day's excursion takes her away from the paying customers, of course its costing her money and she would expect to be paid for her time. She's not on vacation, remember, its not a hobby for her, she's there to pay the rent, feed the kids, etc.
How much should be negotiated in advance.
I would suggest taking a chica on her day off. In that case, she is not losing money and most would go along for just the entertainment, food, drink, etc, and probably just a reasonable gift (swimsuit, clothing item, etc).Oh, I have no problem financially compensating the chica for her time. The "yo" is unnecessary unless you are explaining that it is you and not your wingman who desires to come in her mouth. Correrse, in Spanish from Spain is a reflexive verb meaning to ejaculate, but you don't hear it much, if at all, in the DR. Anyway, it has to be reflexive or else it means to "run". The "su" form for "your" would never be used in this context. The Spanish you have given could be translated as "I want to run in his mouth", which would be fine if you were referring to your wingman, but you had better be sure he is receptive to this idea.
I will be staying at BB for a few days on my maiden trip to DR. I was told that Jenny's Supermarket would be a good place to exchange Dollars US to Dominican Pecos. I was also told Jenny's is within walking distance of BB. Would you conciser it safe to walk there exchange large amount of Dollars and then walk back?

Terminar or "finish" is the verb usually used in this case.

I've been waiting for someone to flame me for this. First of all the only faces except one are of me and two of my wingmen and none of us could give a fuck if it was posted on the front page of the New York Times. More importantly all of these pics were taken during the bikini contest. Any guy who sits poolside during the bikini contest knows damn well that there are a half dozen guys with cameras taking photos sometimes many more than that so I would assume they don't give a fuck either. Well the phrase may work but, one needs to change it to "tu" from "su". 1) because we do not use the THOU form speaking to a chica but a less lofty "you" form and 2) as Frannie explained before, a "su" might potentially indicate a third party's mouth (his / her) if one such person is also around (a wingman). I was just at BB's 3 days ago. I always exchange at Jenny's on the way in. I got 38. 6 pesos to the USD, slightly higher that what the cambios in Sosua were paying. Exchanged $800 in the back room. Very fast and professional. Did the deed in about 3 minutes and made it to BB's in time for the Bikini Contest. Slight advantage if you pay your room bill upon arrival in pesos. Saved a grand total of $7. 55 paying in pesos for a 5 night stay in their least expensive $55 / night room.

That is because most people in Costambar own their own transport. Though there are some poor people living there the proportion is very much lower than in the "real" (that is to say, the "ungated") DR. I have sometimes seen one or two outside the gates of Blackbeards but if none there ask one of the staff to call you one.
Like many things in Costambar, about double what you would pay in the "real" DR, but still a big saving on taking a private taxi because the Costambar taxis are notoriously expensive. They have a captive market and a closed shop and enforce that with threats and...Thanks for the great info. I will use it on my next trip.
thanks for your earlier post about fod re-opening. just got back from 5 days at bb's and stopped by fod twice with my wingmen to reconnect with randall, the manager. it's going to take the american manager,"randall" a few months probably to bring fod back up to speed. all your info below is confirmed. i banged out "paula" an off duty cristals stripper. she stopped by as cristals was closed for the holidays. she immediately accepted my 1, 500 peso offer, i paid the 400 peso short time rental, and off we went for an excellent hour of pleasure. she really enjoys her work. went back for a repeat with her 2 days later as the bb's day shift that day wasn't all that impressive to me. probably not the best idea to hit the scene down here between 12/24 and 1/2 owing to the cultural pressure the chicas are under to be with their families. my wingmen had to go at that time so i went against my judgement and experience and went anyway. no chicas showed up at fod until about 2-3 pm and only a few at that. none were hot. paula's a freak in the sack and has this crazy but fun personality. in private, she's actually mature and decent to hang and talk with. i speak good spanish so that helps me out alot with them. paula=recommended.

My first 2 rentals in Puerto Plata were with Avis and Avis tried to overcharge me twice, after that I never rented with Avis again in the DR (Avis and Budget are partners in the DR). I have read bad reviews of Hertz and Europcar in the DR.

No docs were required. I needed to top up as required and end of the trip, on retuning the chip got back the funds without any hassle.
Next time in santiago orange, they did not know of renting a chip. So I bought a sim. Passport required. I top up as usual and the credit remains for a while but if you visit say, after a year. It will expire.
By the way, I use my unlocked (I got the code from the phone company) US android GSM phone so I do not have to learn the ropes again. Swapping the chip is a cinch.

There are no checkpoints but if get into an accident maybe a problem. Once I got a girl in classico but she did not have an I. The. So I drove her to a cabana she was renting for the weekend. Cabana is a nice set up. As you enter put a code at the gate to open. Put a code at the garage and the garage door opens. Park car and enter a one room with bed, tv etc like a hotel room. All ordered food comes via a turn table. You can order extra towels or sheets or whatever. You never see anybody. Cash needs to be paid for whatever you order. I think she also pre-paid for the room. During the day we did take a ride into town and had lunch. She wanted me to stay with her next night also. But I was totally sexed out and wanted to take it easy. However I dropped her back in Sosua after dinner in the evening. Obviously her modus operandi is successfull but I am surprised what if she find a pinter with no car? I have always rented a car in POP as well. Drive totally drunk many times also. There are no checkpoints but if get into an accident maybe a problem. I am hoping that he won't be too "hands on" and will allow the manager, Randall, to carry on with his plans for developing the place, as it seemed to me and to most of my friends who have visited recently that he is on the right lines. However, as the new owner is Dominican there is no guarantee of that. Time will tell.
I love the place but they are shooting themselves in the foot with all these changes of regime. There is some "drop in" trade, but most gringos want to plan their holiday months in advance and are unlikely to book that far ahead if they don't know who the hell will be running the place in two or three months time. In Dominican Billy's day you either liked the place or you didn't, and if you liked it you could book ahead knowing what you were going to get for your money.

If you go to BB's and are not staying there you can get ST room if there are any available and there usually are. Of course they are open for play 12 to 12.
At Crystals there is an outside area next to the disco which is open during the day after 12 with chicas waiting for you. You can use the rooms above the disco.
At night there is the disco. But Crystals is expensive for the DR. (A C-note US per HR.) Sometimes you can negoiate.

First off thanks to all who have helped me in getting here. After a few days of fucked up travel I made it to Blackbeard's. The staff here are off the charts helpful, courteous and attentive to all my needs. I had them pick me up at the airport. We stopped at Jenny's to exchange $. Peso's, went to Farmacia to get condoms and a little vitamin "C."
I can see where it is a major plus to speak Spanish. I have a note pad with Google Translator app that helps out a lot.
I was going to stay here 3 days and then go to Sosua for the remainder of my trip but I decided to stay here the whole week. I may day trip to Sosau just to check it out. Not being able to speak the language I think I would run the risk of more drama then I need.
I have been banging 3 kick ass hot chicas every day since I have gotten here. 1600 peso ($41US) gets you 2 hrs. 3000 get them all night. I wake up. Have sex and send last nights on her way after breakfast. Hang out at the pool till the chicas start to show up. They start filing in around 11. Pick one to hang out with for a while. Then go bang her. Send her on her way. Take a nap then dinner and round 3. There is a disco here. I counted 18 chicas and 12 dudes in there. Just take your pick.

Randall, the manager, posted immediately before you to say it's business as usual. No doubt he will take your comments on board. However I suspect you are new to the Dominican Republic. Customer service is a totally foreign concept to Dominicans and guys like Randall, who do understand it very well, face an enormous task trying to drill it into them. Never expect too much in that area and you won't be disappointed. Same with telephone protocol. Try emailing.
Not sure what you call "shitty music". We all have different preferences, but if loud and intrusive music of whatever genre turns you off, then don't visit the DR because it is almost unavoidable wherever you go. I even had to suffer it in the dentist's chair yesterday, though the fact that he charged me 1500 pesos for what would have cost the equivalent of 15, 000 pesos in my home country somewhat consoled me. If you think that last is off topic, my point is you have to take the rough with the smooth here. Same with "strong accent". It is their country and not many speak good English. If you think it would benefit them to learn good English, sure, join the end of a long queue. 95% of Dominicans are bone idle and won't make any effort to better themselves. But if 50% of them did, this would no longer be a country to visit for cheap pussy.

She had to take a break one day to go to doctor to get her monthly exam. She rejoined me that night. The price for 24 hour companionship is 4500 pesos or about $120. You will have to talk to mamasan (Kristal or Rosa) about which chicas are available 24 hours, not all are. I used pesos all the time, exchange at Jenny's on way in to Blackbeards, taxi will stop for you. Jennys is also a short walk from Blackbeards. Of course if you take a girl for 24 hours expect to pay for her food and drinks all day long. Even with 24 hour companionship, I was still able to sample other girls doing happy hours and the day that my chica was gone, had a couple of chicas short time. I wouold recommend paying for food and drinks as you go in pesos, they will bill to your room if you want, it is easier to manage your money if you pay as you go I think. Cialis and Viagra are available at Blackbeards for $5 US, I think it is for 2 pills. You can get a taxi from Blackbeards to Sosua. ChrisI did a Sosua to BB trip the week after Thanksgiving. Chicas start showing up around 11am and are available until the bar / disco closes around 12am. Made sure you have your late night entertainment and party supplies lined up before the hotel closes up for the night. Chicas are fixed price 1600 ST. 3000 TLN. The manager at WHITEBEARDS (next to New York Bar) informed me today that they plan to have a full pig for the barbeque Saturday afternoon. At a bona-fida luau I do expect to see hawaiian dancing girls. When I asked him if the girls were prepared to dance hula style, he admitted that no hawaiian style hula dresses had yet been prepared at the seamstress for the luau.

Chris.The girls usually start rolling in around 10 AM, they have 2 shifts morning and then the nightime shift arrives around 5 PM. The price for ST (1-2 Hours) is 1600 pesos. As far as the cab to Sosua that I don't know, you would have to ask at Blackbeards.

I got out of the car at the second parking space, I made certain I had change for the parking meter (I had been up all night and only slept for a short while on the side of the highway). I put money in the parking meter, returned to the driver side door and it was locked, with the keys inside, with the engine running (every door was locked). A Dominican guy over 70 years old exited his house near where I had parked the car. He realized what happened, he invited me into his house, he got the phone number for the car rental place and he called them several times in the next few hours to get a worker to come and open the car. I spent the next few hours in the 70 year old Dominican guy's house, chatting with him and waiting for the worker from car rental place. The older Dominican guy was nice, owned a house and a large piece of property near the monument in Santiago, he was a friend of the current Dominican President and past Dominican Presidents and Juan Bosch (opposition leader to the former dictator Trujillo) used to stay in his home. The older Dominican helped me just to be nice.

The price of the cab to Sousa is $30US one way.Or US$3. 50 by public transport, but it will take you 50% to 100% longer in time as you have to change twice. OK if you are not in a hurry and want to see a bit more local life.
50 peso motoconcho to the gate, 40 pesos for the JC carrito publico to the Parada de Sosua, 45 pesos to Sosua by carrito publico.
But coming back best to take a taxi from La Javilla to Blackbeards (400 pesos) as the JC carrito does not run at night and also you might not fancy riding a moto in pitch blackness.

Remember, the DR is a third world country my friend, have you ever tried to manage a Dominican let alone a handful of them, it's almost impossible. But, just as a contrast, when I called Blackbeard's, I received the typically expected,"Hi, thanks for calling Blackbeard's, how can I help you?" This is an ideal way to answer the phone, because it informs the caller that they have reached the right number, that it is in fact a business, and that the person on the other end is prepared to provide customer service.
My objection to the way FOD answered my call isn't just a matter of aesthetics. It's a reflection on the possibility that I somehow may have reached the wrong number. And to that extent, I may not want to initiate a conversation about mongering. Particularly with a woman blasting dubstep in the background.
Your comments (and those of others) about the general standard to be expected in the DR are well-made, and well-taken. I understand that part of the reason why everything is so affordable there is because it's a third world country, and operates as such. Perhaps I shouldn't expect anything beyond a minimal level of anything. I can accept that, and I probably shouldn't let it bother me.
On the other hand, my comments about basic business acumen are valid, and I don't think making generalized excuses for the Dominican people is appropriate. They CAN be trained to answer the phone properly. It's not beyond them, or at least, it shouldn't be. Ultimately, when considering investing thousands of dollars into a trip abroad, I am the type who'd much rather overpay, but have an experience I can count on, than gamble on a place that can't answer the phone like a business. If anyone is in La Sirena, you might want to check out the pharmacy counter where they have a helpful counter top model to help you figure out whether your erectile dysfunction is level 1, 2.3, or 4. Go there to check out the hotel and see the current hotel prices. If you want to go, you'll either need to send them an email through there or call them up to reserve a room. From what I recall, they fill up pretty quickly (well, actually it depends on the month) , so if you want to go in April, I advise that you contact them immediately. As for bringing chicas in, yes, you can do that. Be prepared to get some strange looks from the girls who work at Blackbeards though. My definition of a semi-pro is a chica who takes money for sex when the opportunity arises, but does not specifically go out looking for men with that intention. She may or may not have been a full-time puta earlier or may become one later, though most are just sowing a few wild oats before marriage or are working their way through college. Very had to pick up genuine non-pros in Puerto Plata unless you are least thirty years younger than me, a lot better looking than me, can speak fluent Spanish, have a car, or are an accomplished Latin dancer. (You won't need all those assets but might need three for a non-pro and one or two for a semi-pro).

Did they repaint the rooms?
I looked at the photos of the rooms from their website, a few months ago. Seems each room has some kind of theme painted on the walls (maybe a few rooms had a solid color painted on the walls) , some rooms had depictions of scantily clad women. Maybe some people like the depictions painted on the walls (in the rooms and in the common areas). If the rooms are inexpensive enough, maybe certain bits of gaudiness can be overlooked.Sadly, no. A few have been overpainted but most remain. I have been told all sorts of stories about the owner's intention for them so I will just wait and see. Most people who have posted here and elsewhere would prefer to see the back of them but one or two are in favor. Apart from spoiling what is a beautiful location I think they are bad business because they will deter not only mongers with any taste, but most non-mongers who could otherwise contribute usefully to FoD's income as they have in past days.
Most are pretty crude and amateurish. Two or three are actually very well painted, but it is still not the right venue. Better off in a strip joint or funfair. Otherwise the room prices are competitive with or better than anywhere on the North Coast, provided you want what FoD offers and what it does not offer is not priority for you.

It is best to go on a clear sunny day when the top is not in the clouds, so that you can enjoy the wonderful views from the top and not be cold and damp. There is an interesting area of parks and walks at the top and various mountain flowers and plants can be seen. There is also a restaurant which is a bit more expensive than down below, as you might expect, but has a fairly decent menu. I would recommend the pollo con arroz paella, but give the camarones al ajillo a miss. Here are some pictures:
