This cell question has been gone over before. You need a tri-band GSM unlocked cell phone from any country....it doesn't matter as long as it is unlocked. Then just add a sim chip from any of around 4 providers in Rio. You now have a cell #. You can use something like T-Mobile or Telecom Germany....but the rates are very high compared to just changing the chip in an unlocked phone. Certain cities will need a change of chip.

in brazil do girls carry an id and is it normal to ask for that?yes, i think it is. every time i checked into my hotel with a garota, they would ask for it. of course, in case you go to a love hotel, they won't. and in the termas, i've never seen an id. but then again, considering how concerned they are in a terma not be a considered a "brothel" as defined by brazilian law (to the point that you have to pay cash for the programa, so that there's no record of anything going on there - like mc), i can't really imagine that a terma would risk it's license by employing anyone ****.

don't really think that any garota would object if you ask for id. if she did, i'd be careful. very careful.

Disclaimer: This post is based on my personal knowledge and I do not profess any engineering and technology mastery in wireless industry. I happen to acquire the knowledge based on my traveling needs and convenience. If you find that my post is incorrect and insufficient, please feel free to amend or complement it. As I happened to live in US, this post more gear towards US fellow citizens traveling abroad.

TDMA, CDMA and GSM

US wireless carriers (known as cell phone companies) had started their business using technology called TDMA (Time Division Multiplexing Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiplexing Access) while most of other countries have been on GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).

Then wireless carriers based on GSM had launched the business in US. VoiceStream is one of early adapter of GSM in US market. Now there are a couple of carriers are operating in US – Cingular (a joint venture between SBC and BellSouth) and T-Mobile. Cingular has finished acquisition of AT&T Wireless not too long ago to be the largest wireless carrier in US.

As far as I know, there are two countries where GSM has not been commercially or widely deployed – Japan and South Korea. South Korea has roaming agreement with Verizon Wireless network as all carriers in South Korea are based on CDMA. If comrades on this board want to use their Verizon wireless phone in Korea, you have to take your phone to Verizon store and download ‘preferred roaming list’ on your phone which can only be done at their stores.

Major wireless carrier for CDMA is VerizonWireless.

One unique physical technological difference between GSM and TDMA/CDMA is SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card which is installed on GSM based mobile phones. SIM cards can be considered as brain for wireless technology and network access.

There are four frequencies being used for GSM in various countries today. Rule of thumb is that 900Mhz/1800Mhz are industry defector standard outside of USA while 850Mhz/1900Mhz are being used in USA.

There have been numerous comments about the tri-band mobile phones which typically support 900Mhz/1800Mhz/1900Mhz. This is why the tri-band mobile phones can be used in US and outside US provided the tri-band phones are “unlocked”. I think that definition of “unlocked” is for a GSM phone to operate and function normally regardless of SIM card offered by GSM wireless carriers throughout the world.

If GSM phones are “locked”, these phones only can operate and function with a specific GSM carrier SIM card, and therefore these phones can not function (send/receive calls) with other carriers’ SIM card.

Therefore, bottom line for travelers to take advantage of using in-country local wireless phone number/rate is to bring/buy a ‘unlocked’ tri-band GSM phone. Then buy a SIM card (prepaid local number) and install the card on the phone. Then you are ready to go after 30 min to one hour activation processing period.

Once you have a local SIM card in your phone, it works like any other local mobile phone with various capabilities like regional or national or international roaming, caller-ID, three-way calling, and the likes.

I have been using Motorola V60 tri-band phone in Europe, Latin America and Asia using local SIM cards and international roaming using a Cingular SIM. I have had little problems or difficulties to date.

Quad-band mobile phones have been introduced lately. I have recently bought a Motorola Razr V3 phone through Cingular which supports four different bandwidth – 850Mhz/900Mhz/1800Mhz/1900Mhz. This phone was activated as US number and delivered unlocked. I popped in a foreign SIM card which has international roaming agreement with Cingular for US roaming. It works like a champ! Now this phone can be used in all GSM carriers known globally as all GSM frequencies are supported by this phone.

While pre-paid SIM cards work fine for normal usage for in-country local calls and in-country roaming, these may come with functional restrictions compared to ‘monthly billing’ account phones. Each wireless carrier in each country set their own rules for their business and by local industry and government regulations, it is very difficult for me to articulate the details.

Unlocked GSM phones can be purchased through various websites and originally carrier specific locked GSM phones can be unlocked by many local mobile phone/telecom retailers, especially outside US. I remember a post that it takes a few minutes and a few dollars to unlock a GSM phone.

My apologies for long wind post but hope understand my desire to assist fellow comrades!

Off2golf,

Yours is a pretty good assessment of the GSM system. I have a Motorola V60i and an older Motorola Timeport 260, both of which were purchased while I was stationed in Saudi Arabia. I've used them with pre-paid SIM cards in Norway, Holland, France, Austria, Thailand, and all the Middle Easr countries. I'm now stationed in Brazil, and they both work fine with the pre-paid cards here.

The worst service I've had is in the US. The was last there two years ago, and GSM service was limited to Voicestream. I had pretty good service in LA and Houston, but once out of these major cities, lost service completely.

I am thinking about making my first trip to Rio in April. I was wondering if someone could help me out. How much money would I roughly need for a two week holiday in Rio. I've been to Thailand and I can get by on around 1300 euro/1750 US Dollars or less for two weeks, this would include food, hotels/apartment, girls every night, general stuff and partying. Money is a bit tight at the moment so if it was going to be really expensive I wouldn’t be able to afford it. This is just a break down of a typical day for me in Thailand

Apartment or Hotel Between say $13-26 US Dollars.
Food about $13-20
Partying $30
Women $27-30
General stuff $20

So generally I spend about $126 US or less a day. Or 94 Euro.

I would be really grateful if somebody could give some advice on this one.

Cheers.

Here are my numbers per day in USD $

Apartment $50
Food $15-20
Partying $30
Women $50-$200 (depends on how many sessions)
General stuff $20

I would budget for $200-250 a day.

There's "party" and "party" ...

I can't imagine how someone can "party" in Rio or SP (or in Bangkok, as mentionned in a previous post) with $30 $/day !!!

The cost of a Black Label bottle in any Rio's good regular disco (Nuth or Baronetti), or in Love Story in SP, is 300 reals ; add the handshack to the manager to get a good table, some Smirnoff bottles or tequila shots for some girlies, maybe a tray of sushis, plus a good tip to the waiter ..... 600 reals is a minimum in those places to really "party" ....

I sometimes saw guys (locals) spending surely much more than 2000 reals during a night's out in Baronnetti.

Of course, there's always cheap charlies who will nurse their 4 reals Antartica latta, stuck to a barstool in Help, this having nothing to do with "partying" IMO ....

Anyway, my personnal average daily budget, when in Sao Paulo, is :

Aparthotel : 130 reals
Food : 80 reals
General stuff : 40 reals (laundry, room service, ect ..)
Taxis : 80 reals (expensives in Sao Paulo)
Party : +/- 600 reals (drinks in Cafe Photo, Gaugin or Kilt + bottle/ladies drinks/VIP service in Love Story)
Garota (s) : 150/200 reals per garota

Total : +/- 1100 reals per day.

Good breakdown, Pro. Buuut, there's also the "tier-two" option, which can reduce the prices of everything by two thirds (150-ish USD/day), and still provide one with the MTV hip-hop fuck fest of your life. Stay at a good 2-3 star hotel for 20USD, eat like a king with the locals (5USD/meal), hit the mid-tier clubs for undiscovered 8s and 9s (30-50/girl) etc., etc., etc. I like to travel down there for months at a time, so the 450/day path is a little (as of yet) out of my budget for that long. Maybe someday soon...

Also, has anyone found any of the hook-up modeling agencies down there? I know that those off-work Giselles down there will suck a man for a price, the trick (no pun intended) is finding them. Two girls at one of the "Hilton backside" clubs had modeled -- 5'10'' naturally blonde lean 10s -- 150/real each. I actually hooked one of the up, and I have a picture of her that I need to get developed. Problem is, neither would do bbbj. The ones that get away...

Excellent breakdown on GSM, Off2Golf.

I use T-Mobile here in the states which like you said uses GSM phones. All the phones from T-Mobile do come locked. They will however, unlock it for free. Just call them up with your phone's serial number, and they will email you the unlock code with instructions on how to enter it into your phone. Very quick and easy.

Just be careful when entering the code. Three consecutive wrong entries and the phone will go into "lockdown mode" rendering it unuseable. I had no problems, however.

Just recently purchased a quad-band GSM, Motorola 551 with Cingular.
I'll be in Brazil next week (Londrina) and Colombia in 3 weeks. Its unlocked.
You have to ask your carrier to activate foreign roaming to use your US no.

Regarding prepaid foreign sim cards. Don't you need a ph. no. in the country you are visiting paying in local currency for a prepaid? Someone please explain how they work.

Thanks

NYC Expat,

You can purchase a SIM card for an unlocked GSM phone in the states or abroad, sometimes carriers have girls posted outside of the arrival gates at airports selling them. You can do a google search and find a host of companies here stateside that sell them over the net for various countries which is cool because you know your overseas phone number before you leave home.

SIM cards are the cards with the gold chip that you remove and insert in the back of your phone usually under your battery. Each card has a local phone number assigned to it allowing you to make local calls in the area of coverage in the city you purchased it for. Usually they come with a nominal amount of airtime and all of them allow free incoming calls for a period of 60-90 days which also allows you to keep the same number.

When your airtime expires you can purchase "cartoes de recarga" at local newstands, just make sure you purchase a recharge card issued by the same company that issued your SIM card, otherwise you won't be able to use it.Rio has various companies; TIM, Oi, Livre etc. and each of them requires a different dialing procedure for calling stateside. TIM I believe is 00411-***-****. I hope this helps.

NYC Expat,

Sometimes they do require more information...usually a passport is sufficient. It seems more who you get at the office/store than what the rule is. I have gotten them with no id whatsoever and then when I had to re-activate because of time, they were willing to do it, only with a passport. This is probably to avoid one person passing the sim to another person, after the expiry date (i.e. no new minutes purchased in 6 months).

The last two sites are really expensive, considering you can buy knock-offs in Brazil for about R$20 (US$8).

The official ones sell in Brazil for something like R$100 ($40).

Hey guys,

I'm going to be travelling to Rio de Janeiro with a couple of friends sometime in July or August '05. What I'm looking for is some good suggestions on where to stay. I'm looking at a place right now that I found off of this site that rents apartments for about $90.00 USD a day.

Also, do any of you guys live there or are going there at around that time that can maybe give me some suggestions or possibly meet up and help a nooby traveller find the best spots?

PM me or just answer here. Hope someone hear's the call.

Hey Nodd_N, thanks for the replies.

I found a very interesting site that rents very nice looking apartments. Here it is: http://www.gringomanagement.com

Listed are several one-bedroom apartments for as low as $45.00 USD a night and two-bedroom apartments for as low as $90.00 USD a night. What I found interesting was that several of these apartments are right around the corner from HELP discoteque, of which I've read a lot about perusing the forums here. I have no personal experience staying at these places so I guess I'll be reporting on them after my visit.

My only reason for thinking about bringing the laptop would be to have a repository to dump the pictures the three of us will be taking on digital camera. I didn't want to run out of room and I have a spare laptop that my company gave to me before giving me my new one (which I never use).

I may not even bring it now that I think of it.

Anyways, hope this helps.

Hello fellow mongers,

I have only posted a few times on here, but have lurked well over a year. I must say that I spend alot of time browsing the pix.

And based on some of the pix, I can tell which mongers have the same taste as me. For example, Master Monger and Saint are completely on point with me!!!!! There are many other mongers that also have the same taste as me, but whom I have forgotten their names (mainly from the Asian pictures).

In any case, I feel that from the pix, I think that I would have a great time in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and/or Peru (in that order).

I have never actually travelled anywhere simply for mongering duties (and the idea turns me on). I would be travelling alone, and predict about a 2 week stay. I plan on taking many digital pix (around 500), as well as bring along alot of nylons (stockings and pantyhose). I love women in nylon so this is a must. I do not speak Spanish though....

I like the GFE experience and would be interested in the following activities (in order of preference):

Meeting regular young chicas on the street or well-known pick up joints

Having hotel staff send me regular girls, or even workers from the hotel!

Escort agencies (although this is my last choice, I must admit that the Platinum website (Argentina) is loaded with babes, so I would be willing to just blow my dividends all there!)

My question: Regarding my camera, will authorities verify the contents of my camera when I exit the country? Also, when entering any of these countries, will airport authorities check my bags, and if so, if they discover these pairs of nylons (still wrapped), could they legally do something to me..?

These questions are very important to me, so i would appreciate any feedback from you veterans regarding these aforementioned questions or any other comments about my interests. thx boys!

I am from Canada, and I 'm hoping to become a more integral member on WSG. I'm wishing I can add more to your already wonderful message board.

Word of advice my friends.

Last night I was in Balcony with a few friends, had a couple o beers etc.

The time to go arrived and we asked for the bill.

After a very long wait they produced a sort of bill, basically a slip with some numbers on it. We ciphered it and found out that it was totally fucked. They had put 15 jarras (Jarra=pitcher) on it, odd beers and beverages totalling R$ 279 plus change.

When I asked about the bill, the waitress claimed that their computers weren't working. BULLSHIT. We kept demanding and eventually we got another REAL bill from their computer, which totalled R$ 185 plus change.

They used to do this scam to tourists way back 2003, but after shitload of complaints they were quite cool.

Most surprising in this is that WE HAVE KNOWN each other for 2 years or so. I live here and I used to go to Balcony on daily basis.

If they do these scams to "locals" you might think what a hell are they doing to infrequent mongers.

Mark what you consume and be careful.

OK, here is my attempt to answering your questions:

I do not speak Spanish though....

I like the GFE experience and would be interested in the following activities (in order of preference):

Meeting regular young chicas on the street or well-known pick up joints

Having hotel staff send me regular girls, or even workers from the hotel!

Since you posted in the Brazil section, I will answer only for Rio. They speak Portugese there. I speak neither Portugese not Spanish, but this has never been a problem. Only once did I find a girl that did not speak a word of English or French. She just came over and DFKed me without a word. We went back to my hotel, and then the night desk guy (at the Luxor Continental, Leme Beach, Rio) translated for us as we negotiated the price. It was hilarious.

Meeting regular chicks: I have been lucky several times in the Plataforma Uno disco and in the Ipanema Bar. There were several other places, but I forgot their names. Once I picked up a girl in one of those crowds standing outside a bar on the street. She was not the prettiest, but gave good service in a penthouse apartment at the Copa.

What you need to realize, though, is that there is no real separating line between amateurs and pros. Most of the girsl operate in some sort of gray zone. A few times I had to pay for the first night, and then the girl spent several nights after that with me for free. You treat them nice, and they will become real attached. I have had my best success with this kind of girls when I picked them up in Scotch Bar (disco/strip joint; one of the strippers went with me after her shift and gave me the best sex that I ever had in Rio), at Mob's (an outside bar and fast food place on the end of Copa), in the Holiday Boite (very expensive!!!), and in Help.

I have never gone with Escorts; they are too expensive for what you get.

I would not recommend asking hotel staff for help arranging dates; you will get a pro this way, and you willhave to buy the cat in the bag. Why do this when you can go along Copa Cabana and its bars and boites and find hundreds of willing chicks that you can pick from?

My question: Regarding my camera, will authorities verify the contents of my camera when I exit the country? Also, when entering any of these countries, will airport authorities check my bags, and if so, if they discover these pairs of nylons (still wrapped), could they legally do something to me..?

I have traveled all over the world with my digital camera, and I have never ever had anybody attempt to check my camera. It's pretty safe to assume that nobody will have an interest in your digital pics. Stocking, nylons: the very worst that can happen to you is that you would have to pay taxes on them. But again, most likely nobody will care. If someone asks you at the border, just claim that you are bringing the stuff for a friend.

On the other hand, I am asking myself why you would want to bring sexy underwear into Brazil. Talk about carrying coals to Newcastle! They have the best stuff for sale there, and at very reasonable prices.

Hey fellow mongers

I am going back down next week for a month. What is the latest status on fingerprinting and the immigration line at GRU? I havent heard anything in a while about. I just assumed that it was not all that bad now.

I have a 4 hour layover in GRU before traveling on to Florianopolis. Last time I was there it was the very first day of fingerprinting process 01/01/04. Luckily I was one of the first people in line and my wait was only about 20-30 minutes.

What the hell are the Brazilians up to now at GRU?

Jak,

this is not surprising. We Americans do it to froeigners, too. And the Brasilians play tit for tat. We make their tourists jump through all of the picture and fingerprinting hoops, so they do the same to our tourists entering Brazil. Germans, by comparison, do not need a visa to enter, and can bypass all of the immigration shit.

Am hoping that somebody might be able to offer me some advice.

I will be travelling from Australia to Las Vegas for a trade show on Sept 28.

I want to then head to Rio for a week for my virgin visit.

I am having trouble putting flights together from this end.

Was wondering if any of you 'learned' guys might be able to offer some advice on most sensible flights from LAS on night of Sept 28 or morn Sept 29 to Rio - returning to LAX on Oct 7 or 8.

Or maybe I will need to head back to LAX first.

Whatever - I am sure somebody out there has the answer for me.

Brazil is reciprocating because of the new US immigration laws since 9/11.
As far as I know BRZ is the only S. American country charging $100 visa fee to Americans since Brazilians must also pay this amt. and the Brazilians are not guaranteed to get the visa while Americans do get their visas.

I've been through GRU immigration 3 times now since late February. Photos and fingerprints are taken only once.

Re.: the IMIG lines, 2 times only 5-10 minutes. Once 1 hour because of Easter tourists entering the country. I assume there will be short lines this spring until vacations begin.

On average the past 4 trips $650 roundtrip though TAM has just raised their price a little. Travelocity now $861. This is not spam. Just trying to help on both ends. Tell her your friend traveling several times recently to Londrina recommended her.

I would like to visit one of the cities I have read about on the board, Fortaleeza, Recife, or Curitaba, does anybody have an opinion as which would be the best for a side trip from Rio? I have been to Rio a lot and speak a little portuguese.

Thanks for the input

Veterano,

The only one of the cities you mentioned that I have been to is Curitiba. I would strongly recommend a trip there. It is a very clean well-planned city, with much of the downtown area closed to traffic and turned into a pedestrian mall. If you go, make sure your stay includes a Sunday, so you can take the train to Paranagua, which is on the coast. It is a striking contrast to Curitiba. There's nothing to do there, so you can just have lunch, then take the train back to Curitiba. The point of taking the train ride is the ride itself. It is one of the few trains in Brazil and covers some breathtaking mountain scenery as you go downhill from Curitiba to Paranagua.

Just a heads up on airfare....try www.flycheapol.com

They generally beat any other service on a consistant basis. I fly from the western US and have not found any other site that can beat there prices. When checking their fares remember to add $40 fee to the fare quote. $40 is a steep fee but even added in the price is still very good. I just purchased a last minute fare for next week for $807. Last January I flew for $747. In 2003 and 2004 I never paid over $700. The fares have been creeping up slowly over the past 2 & 1/2 years.

Also, I fly Continental and the tickets from flycheapol.com have always qualified for my frequent flyer program (OnePass) which isn't always true for some services i.e. Hotwire.....

Respin,

Put all of your valuables including all of your jewelry, credit cards, IDs, ATM card and cash you don´t need for your day into the hotel safe. Get your cash from an ATM at a large bank office where their is plenty of security and go every day to get exactly what you need. Carry a photo copy of your passport and hotel info on you for ID, not your real passport. If you bring a guest to your room, do not open the safe while they are there under any circumstances, make them wait in the hall or bar if you have to.

The chances of the hotel staff cracking the safe in your room is almost zero since the police would have them in a day at most.

I will be having a seder at Terraco Atlantico on Saturday night, if there are any other Jews interested in attending, let me know or just show up. I have a feeling that it will be pretty easy to spot us.

Depends on the airline.

American - Go LAS to DFW then to Rio.. coming back. I think you will have to go to LAX so via MIA or DFW..

Varig - I belive they fly direct from LAX to Rio.. I know they do to Sao Paulo.
if not, Rio - SP then LAX..

I do American to SP every month. They only do Dallas, Miama and NY to Rio or SP..

At S.P. airport GRU, I got 2.54 for one dollar 3 weeks ago. The ATM takes a fee. In Londrina a couple of days later I got 2.70 at an exchange bureau in town. No extra fee.

The dollar has fallen this week to 2.62 at the exchange bureau in LDB. Last night in GRU airport I saw AMEX giving 2.43 for $1.

BTW, if you take TAM from Miami to S.P. GRU, the plane usually arrives about 15-20 minutes earlier than JAP or another European carrier, thus immigration is about 10 mintues max. If your flight is late, figure 20-60 minutes wait because of long lines of foreigners.

Londrina (university city) is a must if you're visiting Curitiba. Ave Higienopolis near the lakes is recommended. Also disco UP HALL loaded with young knock outs on a Wednesday night. Try Catoui shopping center a few minutes walk from Comfort Suites Hotel.

Speaking of Banking fees; From the Chicago Sun-Times:

"Overseas trips rake in credit card fees

April 24, 2005

BY TAMMY CHASE Staff Reporter

Take a look at your credit-card statement, and you may notice something new: fine print telling you that your bank will charge you a "foreign transaction fee" of about 3 percent.

In other words, when you use plastic to buy trinkets, meals and hotel rooms on your Italian summer vacation this year, you're going to pay $3 for every $100 you spend.

What?

Before you begin fuming, realize this: You've likely been charged for overseas purchases in the past -- but until this year, credit-card issuers did not disclose that additional charge as a separate item in your bill. Instead, they rolled that fee into the charge for the restaurant meal or hotel stay.

"For years Americans have gone overseas and paid fees and weren't even aware of it, because there was no transparency in how those fees were represented on your monthly billing statement," says David Robertson, publisher of the Nilson Report, a card-industry newsletter. "Depending on your bank -- you might have been paying 1, 2 or 3 percent -- or nothing."

Now, here's how it works: You pay for dinner overseas with a major credit card. When you get home and later get your monthly credit-card bill, you'll see the dinner cost converted into U.S. dollars, and you'll see a separate charge for the foreign transaction.

The two largest issuers of credit cards, Citibank and Chase (formerly Bank One), charge you 3 percent.

(It varies from card to card, but for some, that fee breaks down into 1 percent that pays for the service of converting the bill into U.S. dollars -- this would be paid to Visa -- and another 2 percent that's paid to the card-issuer like Citibank, for example. American Express charges 2 percent for conversion and another fee on top of that, according to Consumers Action, a San Francisco-based consumers' advocacy group.)

Some cards have been charging such fees for a couple of years now, but they're going to better disclose it to credit-card customers following litigation last year over how MasterCard and Visa disclosed fees to customers, says Robertson. It's unlikely that you can avoid all fees when traveling overseas, given most travelers are unlikely to feel uncomfortable toting large amounts of cash, but there are ways to keep those extra charges to a minimum, experts say.

Would you like that in U.S. dollars, monsieur? Historically, if you pay with a card for something overseas, the bill is converted by a company like MasterCard or Visa into dollars. That's going to still be the case in most transactions. However, some merchants have installed software that "reads" your card as American, and the host may ask you if you'd like to pay in U.S. dollars, rather than euros -- and be charged a 2 1/2 percent fee, for example, for the "service" of converting your bill into dollars.
"In almost all cases it's probably best when offered that currency conversion abroad [by the merchant] to say no," Robertson says. That's because you could still be charged another fee -- say, by Citi or Chase, on your bill, on top of what you've already paid the merchant, he explains.

How do you know if this is true? "You have to contact your card-issuing bank and ask them two things: one, if I do nothing abroad and I let you do the currency conversion service, and charge me a fee for that, what is that fee?" he says. "Two, if I go abroad and let a merchant do it, when I come back here are you going to add anything even though the transaction comes back to you in U.S. dollars?"

And, you may not get as favorable a conversion rate from the merchant as you would from, say, MasterCard, he says.

Keep some money. "A couple hundred dollars" of travelers checks with you, advises Cate Williams, vice president of financial literacy of Money Management International, a credit-counseling agency.

Call your credit-card company. Let them know you're traveling overseas and see if you can neogitate better fees, Williams says --it's free to ask, though your bank can say no.

Pre-pay for as much as you can, like airline tickets and hotel -- some of which you can book online. If it's done here in the United States, you can pay lower fees because you're pre-paying it. "You only pay the 1 percent is what I'm told," Williams says. Call your bank.

For the purchases you can't avoid making without plastic: look at it as a cost of vacationing. "That could just very well be the price... of convenience," Williams says."

Capital One doesn't charge an additional fee for foreign charges. I spoke to them during the week, and this was confirmed. But, Mastercard will charge you 1 percent.

Anyway, it's nothing new.

Well, brothers, I'm back to the States in a few hours. Firstly, I want to say that I really enjoyed traveling/hanging with the WSG crew that I hooked up with this time (Almotu, Anders, Pluto02, A Wanderer and bro Junior -- all good guys).

This is my third time down here -- each trip being about 2 months long. I've hobbied in about 20 cities down here, for what that's worth.

It really sucks how much the dollar is slipping. It's made this thing SO much more expensive. Hopefully that will revert.

Another thing that I've repeatedly noticed is the anti-BBBJ position the girls are taking. SP, Rio, Belo, Fortaleza, etc. -- the girls more often than not didn't want to do it. First two times down here, it was absolutely no problem. Dunno.

I'd say Photo (in SP) is rapidly becoming a waste of time and money. Bahamas (though I've never been) has been repeatedly described to me as a clip joint. Kilt, too, is bad. My Love, opposite Kilt is good and cheap.

In Rio, Help is hit or miss. Barbarella's is probably best avoided, though Frank's bar (next to Barb's) is good, cheap and under-reported. Check it out.

Fortaleza was a little different, not quite as good as I remember -- but still worth a look if you like the late-night freelance scene. It, along with SP and Rio seemed a little more rough and dangerous than I remember.

I think I'm going to make Jardins in SP my new hole-up locale when I'm in town.

Anway, I'm missing Brasil already. Brasil is one of the best countires on Earth. The best is yet to come.

'Til next time.

Happy Hunting,

I'm looking for a decent hotel in the jardins that is girl friendly. I've already received a few suggestions, but I still need a little more info.

Is anyone familiar with the Blue Tree Towers Paulista? Blue Tree Paulista is located one block from Paulista Avenue and next to Sao Paulo's Art Museum (MASP), and about 4 blocks from Rua Augusta. It's available at what seems to be a great price, but I can't determine the size of the rooms. Also, how's the neighborhood?

How does the Blue Tree Towers Paulista compare to the Mercure Jardins? The Mercure Jardins seems to be good, but I've read conflicting info if it's girl friendly and what's the guest fee is 30R or 50R?

I know a few of you stayed at the Parthenon, but it's not on my list at this point.

Thanks,

What a shame if the girls are hardening their stance on BBBJ. I can only conclude that the reason for this is all the pussy-whipped Gringo Little tools who are coming down there are freely accepting this. I don't know about all yous guys but Bareback BJs are completely non-negotiable for me (seriously I would rather jerk-off than recieve a covered bj) and for the premium dollar these girls are getting CBJs should not be accepted unless you actually want this. I haven't been to Brazil in a while but sounds like the Gdp's are getting more and more hardened, greedy and lazy and it seems to be happeneing at an astonishing rate. We should be making them earn every last cent they get! WE ARE GRINGOS HERE US ROAR!!

Cornhole, while AIDS transmission rates for men are pretty much negligible for BBBJ, they certainly aren't for women - ESPECIALLY if the woman in question is going down on several men a day.

You may be a gringo, but that doesn't entitle you to insist that a woman put her life at risk for a measily 50 bucks.

And its not just AIDS that's at stake here, folks, but other forms of VD as well.

If you're going to monger, monger safely. And "safely" INCLUDES the health of your partner, gents.

Seriously, it shocks the shit out of me that there are men here who feel entitled to push someone else to risk their life and health for an all-mighty buck. If a woman decides that the risk is worth it to her, that's her affair. But "roaring gringos" like you, Cornhole, should perhaps reflect upon the fact that the girls are much more at risk for disease than you are when they go bareback. What's a momentary pleasure for you may turn out to be long months in the hospital for her.

Think about it.

Oh, I forgot. Gringos NEVER carry STDs, right? [Roll eyes...]

Oral Sex Is Not Considered Safe Sex
A number of studies have demonstrated that oral sex can result in the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Oral Sex is a Common Practice
Oral sex involves giving or receiving oral stimulation (i.e. sucking or licking) to the penis, the vagina, and/or the anus. Fellatio is the technical term used to describe oral contact with the penis. Cunnilingus is the technical term which describes oral-vaginal sex. Anilingus (sometimes called "rimming") refers to oral-anal contact. Studies indicate that oral sex is commonly practiced by sexually active male-female and same-gender couples of various ages, including adolescents. Although there are only limited USA data about how often adolescents engage in oral sex, some data suggest that many adolescents who engage in oral sex do not consider it to be sex; therefore they may use oral sex as an option to experience sex while still, in their minds, remaining abstinent. Moreover, many consider oral sex to be a safe or no risk sexual practice.

In a USA national survey of teens conducted for The Kaiser Family Foundation, 26% of sexually active 15 to 17 year olds surveyed responded that one "cannot become infected with HIV by having unprotected oral sex", and an additional 15% didn't know whether or not one could become infected in that manner

Oral Sex and the Risk of HIV Transmission
The risk of HIV transmission from an infected partner through oral sex is much smaller than the risk of HIV transmission from anal or vaginal sex. Because of this, measuring the exact risk of HIV transmission as a result of oral sex is very difficult. In addition, since most sexually active individuals practice oral sex in addition to other forms of sex, such as vaginal and/or anal sex, when transmission occurs, it is difficult to determine whether or not it occurred as a result of oral sex or other more risky sexual activities. Finally, several co-factors can increase the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex, including: oral ulcers, bleeding gums, genital sores, and the presence of other STDs.

When scientists describe the risk of transmitting an infectious disease, like HIV, the term "theoretical risk" is often used. Very simply, "theoretical risk" means that passing an infection from one person to another is possible, even though there may not yet be any actual documented cases. "Theoretical risk" is not the same as likelihood. In other words, stating that HIV infection is "theoretically possible" does not necessarily mean it is likely to happen-only that it might. Documented risk, on the other hand, is used to describe transmission that has actually occurred, been investigated, and documented in the scientific literature.

Various scientific studies have been performed around the world to try and document and study instances of HIV transmission through oral sex. A programme in San Francisco studied 198 people, nearly all gay or bisexual men. The subjects stated that they had only had oral sex for a year, from six months preceding the six-month study to its end. 20 per cent of the study participants, 39 people, reported performing oral sex on partners they knew to be HIV positive. 35 of those did not use a condom and 16 reported swallowing cum. No-one became HIV positive during the study. Due to the low number of unprotected serodiscordant pairings, all that can be said is that there was a less than 2.8 per cent chance of infection through oral sex over a year. In 2000, a different San Francisco study of gay men who had recently acquired HIV infection found that 7.8 per cent of these infections were attributed to oral sex. However, the results of the study have since been called into question due to the reliability of the participant's data.

In June 2002, a study conducted amongst 135 HIV-negative Spanish heterosexuals, who were in a sexual relationship with a person who was HIV-positive, reported that over 19,000 instances of unprotected oral sex had not lead to any cases of HIV transmission. The study also looked at contributing factors that could effect the potential transmission of HIV through oral sex. They monitored viral load and asked questions such as whether ejaculation in the mouth occurred and how good oral health was. Amongst HIV-positive men, 34 per cent had ejaculated into the mouths of their partners. Viral load levels were available for 60 people in the study, 10 per cent of whom had levels over 10,000 copies. Nearly 16 per cent of the HIV-positive people had CD4 counts below 200. The study, conducted over a ten year period between 1990 and 2000, adds to the growing number of studies which suggest varying levels of risk of HIV transmission from oral sex when compared to anal or vaginal intercourse.

At the 4th International Oral AIDS Conference held in South Africa, the risk of transmission through oral sex was estimated to be approximately 0.04 per cent per contact. This percentage figure is a lot lower than the two American figures, because this figure is a risk per contact percentage, whereas the other figures are percentage risks over much longer time periods. Oral sex is still regarded as a low-risk sexual activity in terms of HIV transmission, but only when more work is done will we be clearer as to the risks of oral sex.

Theoretical and Documented Risk of HIV Transmission During Oral-Penile Contact
Theoretical:
In fellatio, there is a theoretical risk of transmission for the receptive partner (the person who is sucking) because infected pre-ejaculate ("pre-cum") fluid or semen can get into the mouth. For the insertive partner (the person who is being sucked), there is a theoretical risk of infection because infected blood from a partner's bleeding gums or an open sore could come in contact with a scratch, cut, or sore on the penis.

Documented:
Although the risk is many times smaller than anal or vaginal sex, HIV has been transmitted to receptive partners through fellatio, even in cases when insertive partners didn't ejaculate ("cum").

Theoretical and Documented Risk of HIV Transmission During Oral-Vaginal Contact
Theoretical:
Cunnilingus carries a theoretical risk of HIV transmission for the insertive partner (the person who is licking or sucking the vaginal area) because infected vaginal fluids and blood can get into the mouth. (This includes, but is not limited to, menstrual blood.) Likewise, there is a theoretical risk of HIV transmission during cunnilingus for the receptive partner (the person who is having her vagina licked or sucked) if infected blood from oral sores or bleeding gums comes into contact with vulvar or vaginal cuts or sores.

Documented:
The risk of HIV transmission during cunnilingus is extremely low compared to vaginal and anal sex. However, there have been a few cases of HIV transmission most likely resulting from oral-vaginal sex.

Theoretical and Documented Risk of HIV Transmission During Oral-Anal Contact
Theoretical:
Anilingus carries a theoretical risk of transmission for the insertive partner (the person who is licking or sucking the anus) if there is exposure to infected blood, either through bloody fecal matter (bodily waste) or cuts/sores in the anal area. Anilingus carries a theoretical risk to the receptive partner (the person who is being licked/sucked) if infected blood in saliva comes in contact with anal/rectal lining.

Documented:
There has been one published case of HIV transmission associated with oral-anal sexual contact.

Other STDs Can Also Be Transmitted Through Oral Sex
Scientists have documented a number of other sexually transmitted diseases that have also been transmitted through oral sex. Herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, genital warts (HPV), intestinal parasites (amebiasis), and hepatitis A are examples of STDs which can be transmitted during oral sex with an infected partner.

Reducing the Risk of HIV Transmission Through Oral Sex
The already low risk of becoming infected with HIV from oral sex can be reduced still further by using latex condoms. For cunnilingus or anilingus, plastic food wrap, a condom cut open, or a dental dam can serve as a physical barrier to prevent transmission of HIV and many other STDs.

Well, Macunaima I can admire you for your convictions but think they're quite off the mark. First off MILLIONS of women all around the world everyday swallow semen and never get so much as a cold. If HIV were so easily transmittable to the recipient of oral sex then there would easily be three times as many HIV infections opposed to the current numbers. The various studies posted below are very vague and inconclusive. It doesn't prove anything. To say this should not be practiced because it could possibly endanger the woman's health is ridiculous especially when you consider how many other things are far more dangerous for a gdp in Brazil.

The cold hard fact is there are several hundred proffesions that put people at risk but they weigh the pros and cons of the said proffession and choose whether or not they want to do it. Policeman, fireman, lumberjacks, pilots, prostitues ect. It's their choice and they live with the risks no matter how low or high they may be. Nobody is "pushing" these girls to do anything it's up to them just like it's up to a car dealer if he's willing to accomodate the customer or risk losing them to another dealer.

BTW it's not just Gringos who do this common practice but Brasilian men as well.

Macunaima

Cornhole,

While it's true that millions of women every day engage in oral sex, we aren't talking about women with a "normal" sexual life here: we're talking about women who, on a busy day, are going down on a dozen or more guys. The risks for professional sex workers SKY ROCKET. A .04 percent chance of acquiring a disease is a hell of a lot more worrisome when you have some 1500 different sexual partners a year.

And why is it HIV which should be the only concern? There was a guy on this site a year or so back who got genital warts from a BBBJ at a terma here in Rio. There's gonoreia, syphilis, herpes and other cheerful STDs to think about, all of which are EASILY transmitted via oral means.

And while it's true that there are many risky professions in this world, and no one pushes pros to do what they do (at least in Copa), unlike those other professions you mention, prostituion is not a high-status racket. Furthermore, no one is standing next to burning buildings, egging on fireman to take off their smoke masks and jackets and plunge into the inferno unprotected for a fistfull of extra dollars. No one is standing outside precinct houses telling cops they'll be paid more if they head out into the streets without their guns, clubs, cars, radios, back up or other equipment - equipment designed to reduce their risks. Anyone who would do such a thing would probably be criticized by most people as a crass fool.

So if we don't think it's OK to pay other dangerous professions extra to take higher risks for our personal enjoyment, why should we think it's perfectly fine to do so with prostitutes?

As for gringos and Brazilians, both do this sort of thing, of course, and it's equally reprehensible. However, the Brazilian, at least, has to live with the consequences of his acts, if only in terms of seeing more of his taxes being spent on public STD clinics.

Macunaina,

While there is some merit to your post, I must disagree on a couple issues. My lifelong and best friend is an MD who has been involved in many STD studies, in fact it is his specially and he forces me into a total STD screen twice a year. He and I went early to a german FFK club that we frequent last year. (We may not go this year due to the dollar euro exchange rate currently.) We didn't realize that it didn't open until 11 am. But they opened up early to let the doctor in that checks the girls and administers the blood tests, I think they said it was weekly. In the FKK clubs, it is always bbbj unless you ask for the tire on your dick. The German doctor, who spoke english, my friend and I had an hour discussion over beers about the STD risks etc.(They let us in early) The girls are told to use antisepitic mouthwash, then brush their teeth between customers. I have no idea how many customers they see per day, but it could as high as twelve. Although I didn't understand all of what they discussed, I can tell you this. It was agreed that the mouth is not a acceptable host for most STD. The major exception was the g worts, and they have had a couple case's, (I think he said 4), since this doctor has been doing their testing. I think he said he had been testing there for about 8 years. But g worts are hardly life threating. He also said that they had about one case each of some of the other things you mentioned. They are not life threating in any way. No hiv, which has been discussed throughly on this board. Also, no siphilisIeither. Although siphlis is life threating, it would be rare for it not to be detected when the sores appeared and treated now days. The couple girls that got infected, however, were fired because the owners suspected BBFand BBA was on their menue. Both of those are very good hosts of course. Herpes can be caught even with a condum, by the way. However, herpes simples 1, and herpes simplex two are different virus. A girl could get mouth herpes by kissing you if you had oral herpes. It would be extremely unusual to contract the other it in her mouth even if you had the other as well. That simpex cannot normally live in the mouth. In other words, the crap that lives down there can't normally infect the mouth. Rarely, Climidia (SP) I understand can. The way more likely problem is that she gives BBBJ to a guy that has something, and then passes it on to you. She does not contract it.
What I am trying to say is, that I am sure that you are dead wrong that by getting a BBBJ, we are threating her life.

The girls in the thermas are constantly giving BBBJ's. We sit down and talk and before long those same girls are DFKing us. Isn't that the normal happenstance? Then why are we not catching everything under the sun?
Because the bad b's and v's cannot normally live a second in the mouth.
BBBJ is almost as safe for both parties as VF and BF with a condum IMHO.

Macunaima,

I just can't digest your logic here. Fireman deal with the hazards of smoke and fire, it comes with the uniform just as dealing with STDs come with the job of a hooker. Condom or not it's all something they need to deal with and if they can't they need to turn in their proverbial letter of resignation immediately. When I say millions of women everyday perform oral unprotected I'm including pros who have multiple partners a day. Like I said show me the sceintific studies that say this is what leads to HIV infection and I'll show you some that contradict them. Despite billions of dollars spent researching this virus sceintists are still baffled by it. But I think most will agree it isn't a virus that easily finds it's way into the bloodstream.

As for the other VDs none of them carry the same risk to ones life like smoke inhalation. So equating BBBJ with running into a burning building without a smoke mask on is crazy. There is too huge a contrast between these professions to use them to illistrate your point IMO. Nevertheless it won't make me change my habits and I doubt it would make anyone else either. I'm sorry if I can't see a moral dilemma with this, maybe someday it will hit me like a bolt of lightning who knows.

Peace

I think my logic's pretty clear, Cornhole. No one is asking fireman to make their already risky job EVEN MORE risky by leaving their protective equipment behind when they go into a burning building. Anyone who suggested that firemen be paid extra to do this would probably be seen as pretty callow guy.

Likewise, pros should not be asked to make their already job even riskier by leaving off the jimmy cap.

Again, my problem with this isn't restricted to HIV alone: it also includes all sorts of other STDs, many of which are most certainly transmittable via oral sex. And while many of these may not be life-threatening, a health risk is a health risk and this is ESPECIALLY the case when we're talking about a profession that does not provide health insurance for its members and a city whose public healthcare system is in almost terminal collapse.

As for a "bolt of lightning", I doubt it will occur unless you, yourself pick up a STD this way. But it's a pretty clear indication that you really aren't thinking about the health of the women you're fucking. Again, perhaps you could care less about that, too. But then you and folks who feel like you shouldn't get all up in arms about "feminists" when people point out that prostituion should be banned due to STD transmission problems.

Adikt, as for the problems with BBBJ, I'm talking about risking health, not necessarily life. That being said, do you REALLY believe that the same percautions that were being taken in the German FFK are taken in the termas here, or that a girl who does get sick here will have access to health care as good as those German girls can get?

Finally, while brushing between blowjobs might help with some diseases, it might actually make the woman more vulnerable to others by making her gums bleed.

Macunaima,

I heard that the terma girls are tested, but I have no idea if that is true or not. I may have heard that on this board. Yes, you may be right that the same quality health care and precautions may not be the same in Brazil as in first world countries. I guess that if one really needs BB, they should find a girlfriend and both get tested first. But the mongering gringo's are such a piddley portion of the sex scene there, probably wouldn't make a dent in the situation. However, after saying that, I did not think that Brazil had a VD epidemic. It said in the Wall Street Journal a week or so ago that the HIV rate in Brazil was .6 per one 100,000 vs .5 per 100,000 in the US. I have no idea about the rest of the STD's. I read also that Brazil recently turned down 40 million dollars of aid from the US, because they would not condem prosititution as required. I guess that the right wing idiots are trying still to impose their morals on everbody in the world. Brazil said that their programs are working and they don't need to take the counterproductive programs that the mistaken moralists attempt to impose. It didn't sound like Brazil had a epidemic. What is the situation? I haven't read or heard that VD is rampid in Brazil. No body I have meet there has caught anything.

Adikt, whether or not gringos are a big part of the scene is besides the point. Rest assured that I don't think that Brazilians are somehow exempt from the responsability of using a rubber when they go to termas.

Personally, I think it's kinda funny how most mongering gringos are skeptical about anything in Brazil working right, but, contradictoraly, lay their faith in two-bit outfits like termas conscientiously testing their girls every month. Yes, termas SAY they do this. Do they really? Who knows? Wann bet your health on it?

And finally, my point wasn't about mongers getting sick: it was about mongers making the girls sick. The only way to get around that is to force mongers to have a monthly check-up and I'm sure that's not going to happen any time soon.

"However, after saying that, I did not think that Brazil had a VD epidemic. It said in the Wall Street Journal a week or so ago that the HIV rate in Brazil was .6 per one 100,000 vs .5 per 100,000 in the US."

We have easily as much VD as the US does. Does it need to qualify as an "epidemic" before people start worrying about it? One of the reasons we DON'T have an epidemic like Africa is because people use condoms here.

"I read also that Brazil recently turned down 40 million dollars of aid from the US, because they would not condem prosititution as required. I guess that the right wing idiots are trying still to impose their morals on everbody in the world. Brazil said that their programs are working and they don't need to take the counterproductive programs that the mistaken moralists attempt to impose."

Yep. One of my friends was involved in that. Why change a system that's working just to suit the U.S. Republicans?

I have often seen girls being tested at the Termas. Sometimes they were waiting inline to see the nurse/doctor and other times they have small bandages on their arms after having had a blood test done.

From the girls I have talked too my guess is that they are tested on a monthly basis. I am not sure what the procedure is if a girl is tested positive for a STD.

Macunaima and Cornhole,
This has been a fantastic discussion, especially since it is so important.
Cornhole started it by saying that he would rather jerk off than have a cbj. I feel the same. The three things I enjoy, are the DFKissing, BTDATY, and the BBBJing. For some reason we didn't discuss the first two, both of which may be more likely to cause illness than BBBJ. Without them I will give up mongering. I hate condums, but realize I have to use them for intercourse. Intercourse is, therefore, not very high on my agenda. I can actually do without intercourse due to the taking away of the feeling of the girl. I might as well purchase a fake pussy since all one feels is the latex.

I admit I didn't catch your point about that the girls getting sick, not the mongers. The reason being is that I DO get a full STD screen before I take my annual winter vacation to Brazil. I KNOW I am not risking anybodies health by not requiring a CBJ. I would not even kiss if I had a cold, etc. I also realize that not all mongers do get tested frequently if at all.

You stated that the reason that Brazil did not have an VD epidemic because they use condums. That is true for intercourse. In my experences (95%) it has been normal for the girls to BBBJ and then put on the condum. I do not ask for BBBJ, they just do it. I think it is rare in Brazil for CBJ, as it is just about everywhere, except in Amsterdam. (Which of course enhances your point that so many partners equals risk). My point is that Brazil does NOT have an epidemic and BBBJ has been the NORM. Only about half the time, however, was CIM allowed. I was in Rio just two and one half months ago, and not one girl gave me a CBJ. I did not see a harding of attitude. But of course, I stick with girls I really like. I'm not after quantity, but quality. My second week I only had sex with one girl, whom I currently e-mail weekly. I met her outside of help. She said she only works their about once a month on those months she cannot make the rent. She has a college degree and has a real 6 day a week job in computer design. If I can afford it, I want to soon have her meet me in Vegas this summer. She speaks and writes better english than me and also has a US Visa. I guess I pick the more innocent looking girls than the porno or pro types. She is an extremely nice young chick. I accidently left my wallet with her with about 200 us dollars in it. She never took a thing. I travel Brazil to get out of the cold for a couple weeks, and have a girlfriend experience. Not for a sexual marathon. The girl always ends up being my sightseeing guide as well.

Wouldn't it be great if the termas required mongers to first have a blood test before they could come back a few days later to participate after the result were determined? The terma would receive the results, and have a link to the other participating safe termas. After 30 days the monger would have to retest at some terma to continue to be admitted. The monger would also have to pay for the test of course.

Getting back to the discussion, I just do not believe that BBBJ is a significant problem in the fight against VD. Of course it presents a slight more risk that CBJ, especially in the terma setting. It would reduce the spread of VD more if they were taught to detect Vwarts and G herpes and s sores then CBJ. Condums are by no means the only answer as those three have been shown to infect sometimes even with a condum on during the actual act. Condums are extremly important during intercourse however. Especially against unwanted children.

Macunaima,

I haven't read or heard that VD is rampid in Brazil. No body I have meet there has caught anything. Thanks for bringing it down to a simple but very precise level of understanding with this comment right here. BBBJ is normal in Rio and whether Macunaima likes it or not there are heaps of girls (especially Termas ones) who take loads after loads of semen in there mouths everyday yet STDS are not rampant as they are in other notorious mongering destinations, mainly because BBFS is not as common in Brazil as in say Thailand for example. But based on my experience there are girls in Rio who will do that too (I don't engage in that regularly). It all boils down to NUMBERS and when I see the stats on STDs change dramatically and run into numerous girls who have sores and outbreaks (yes I know they don't need to be visible) then and only then will I take Macunaima's UNTRIED and UNTESTED theory with anything but a grain of salt.

And yes I do get up and arms when the feminists and the religious nutbars go on a crusade against prostitution for some stupid reason like curbing the spread of STDs. If that's really there goal then they should broaden there agenda (jihad) to include casual sex in general because that's how the majority of Stds (especially herpes) are spread believe it or not.

One more thing, I think Macunaima should tone down this "what is responsible and irresponsible behavor" rhetoric. In case he doesn't know this isn't exactly the proper forum for discussing the finer points of morality as he sees them.

I came across this news today:

The US has been giving Brazil $40Mil/year to fight AIDS. Ok, cool. But this year, they added some language to the bill that allocates the money, denouncing prostitution. Prostitution is legal in Brazil, and a great deal of their AIDS programs are aimed at keeping the ass industry safe. And rightly so.

Brazil had the balls to say no thank you to the $40,000,000 gift because they do not want to denounce prostitution, and have the US swing their values onto the country’s domestic affairs. I think that is commendable!

I was just thinking about what we, presumably the most likely to be sympathetic to Brazil’s position, can do to help. I have 2 ideas. 1) Next time you are trying to figure out where to spend your pussy dollars, seriously consider a trip to Brazil. I’ve never been there, only Thailand and China, but the people I have talked to, that have been all over the world, tell me that Brazil kicks serious ass. And 2) If you have any extra denero burning a hole in your pocket, find a reputable Brazilian AIDS charity and try to soften the blow.

Here is the story if you are interested

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/05/04/brazil.us.aids.ap/index.html

Incase that link is not stable, here is the text

Wednesday, May 4, 2005 Posted: 8:07 PM EDT (0007 GMT)
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil won't accept some $40 million (euro30.88 million) in U.S. funding to fight AIDS unless Washington drops a clause condemning prostitution, the Health Ministry said Wednesday.

The head of Brazil's anti-AIDS program, Pedro Chequer, sent a letter to the U.S. government last week saying that his country would not accept the money under the conditions imposed in funding agreement.

"We don't accept this meddling because it interferes with our sovereignty. We have our anti-AIDS program and they have their way of fighting AIDS," said a press officer at the Health Ministry who declined to be identified.

The money is part of a funding package from USAID, which allotted $48 million (euro37.06 million) to Brazil for its AIDS campaign between 2003 and 2008. The Health Ministry estimates that $8 million (euro6.18 million) dollars of that money has already been spent.

Brazil has received funding from USAID since 1996.

The Health Ministry said the clause that condemns prostitution -- which is legal in Brazil -- was not in the original agreement signed by Brazil, but was added later by the Bush administration.

Brazil is one of the first countries to oppose the Bush administration's policy of linking foreign aid to policies favored by the religious right.

Brazilian officials said that condemning prostitution represented a serious problem for their anti-AIDS program, which works with many non-governmental organizations that encourage the use of condoms by sex workers -- one of the groups with the highest risk of getting AIDS.

Brazil has made great progress in curbing AIDS by distributing millions of free condoms every year at street festivals like carnival. It also provides anti-AIDS drugs free to anyone who needs them.

About 600,000 of Brazil's 183 million people are infected with the HIV virus.

Cornhole,

STDs exist, even in Brazil. Whether or not AIDs is transmissible through oral sex, other STDs certainly are. This is fact, not my moral opinion.

A woman who does a dozen or so BBBJ a day is indeed at high risk for STDs. If you think I'm lying or moralizing, you can confirm this with the doctor of your choice.

I think you have trouble confusing "morals" with facts, my friend.

How would you describe "os seios impinados" and "os seios turbinados" in english?

This section describes GP's that provide sub-standard services and advises all to avoid them.

Pisada na bola means to step on the ball, rather than passing it or making a goal. It means to screw up or not deliver expected results.

Roubada da GP literaly means; "cheating by the GP" or a GP not delivering the agreed upon service, or poor quality services.

Empinados means to stand Up, or to point upward, perky breasts or nipples and also may be said as "farol alto" or high headlight beam.

Turbinado means turbo powered, or silicone enhanced breasts.

Haven't you figured it out. Look how good his english is. Well educated Brazilian, probably educated in the US. His main concern is not for us but the girls. He said that he had a friend the was in on the refusal of the US right wing "strings" money. Does not want us getting BBBJ's in Brazil because a girl like a terma girl giving 12 BBBJ's a day for 5 years might finally need a antibiodic or a wart frozen in her mouth. He is in some way connected to the Brazilian Gov't. Any reductions of any STD's will help Brazil in many ways, even political. Macunaima is President Luma, or one of his associates.

Am I right Macunaima? Do I win a lifetime Visa? Didn't I admit that there is a risk, (although I think it is slight)(probably more risk to the receiver-the tack you should have taken) to BBBJ lovers? If mongers are afraid of BBBJ you have had a victory.

As annoying this character is, he's got a POINT. If the girls in Brasil get infected, all of us who are stupid enough not to use any protection will be infected too. Also those who use protection are in greater danger, because every now and then accidents do happen.

Please use condom, it'll save your life.

BTW, girls in Brasil are very much against abortion so there is another reason for using condom.

I think it's comical he prioritizes the health and well-being of prostitutes over regular impoverished women who are probably in much more dire situations. Alot of these hookers are making alot of money and can afford decent heathcare, many families are in utter destitution and are much worse off. I'm a "well educated Brazilian" who works for the Brazilian government?

ROFL!

I see the paranoia's hitting some folks rather strongly these days, neh Adikt. Getting a wee bit worried about the PFs, are you?

Actually, there are plenty of folks at the Federal Police who would like to can my ass. I work - insofar as I work for anyone, politically speaking - for the prostitutes' union here in Rio. You can bet your bottom dollar that these people are not in good favor with certain folks in federal circles these days, seeing as how it was their president's very principalled resistence to USAID's "teach celibacy or else" policy that got that 40 million simollion grant from Unka Sugah shit-canned.

But yeah, I'd just luuuuuuuv to be pulling down a fat government salary and pension. Which is why I waste my time talking to mongers. As everyone knows, talking to foreign sex tourons is widely appreciated in the higher echelons of the Brazilian federal government and is a sure-fire way to get oneself on the fast-track for hiring the next time the concursos públicos open. And if you believe that, I have a very fine appartment I'd like to sel you on the seaward side of Av. Atlántica...

Do you REALLY think the PF agents who undoubtedly hang out here bother to post, Adikt?

As for my "real" reason for being on this site, it has been stated from the get-go. I work in an NGO with Copacabana pros. I am not against mongering. In fact, I have gone to bat SEVERAL times in front of the federal and state governments for your right to monger your little heart out, Adikt, seeing as how it's not prohibitted by any Brazilian law. And I'm here to keep touch with certain realities in the mongering universe that go beyond what I can easily see in Copa. Why? To make sure that when I'm talking about what's going on, I'm not bullshitting anyone - unlike our current batch of scumsuckers sitting in the State Human Rights Ministry who, frankly, want to have all you boyos clapped in the bastinado.

As for your speculation about my friend, please read more carefully. My friend was "in on the refusal" in the sense that she pushed the Brazilian givernment to REFUSE to take the U.S.' money because it came with strings attached which would require Brazil to fight prostitution and sexual tourism. Get it? She was PROTECTING your right to monger, Adikt, not calling for its banning. Her view is that if prostitution is legal in Brazil (and it is), gringos should not be illegally harassed for engaging in it and that pros MUST be encouraged to use rubbers.

So if you haven't figured it out yet, monger or not, like me or not, I am your political ally, Adikt.

Now to get back to the original point - which you seem to want to avoid at all costs, probably because you know that you don't have a logical leg to stand on - BBBJ is a BAD idea because it exposes people to disease, especially the woman, ESPECIALLY if she's a pro and doing this dozens of times a day. Different from what you may have been lead to believe, most termas DO NOT test their workers more than once a month. Some don't require that a worker do anything other than present a test ONCE: when they apply for the job. Do you really think, however, that the women and the termas employees involved are going to tell you anything aside from "Oh, yeah. Everyone gets tested here every week. Sometimes twice. Don't worry. Have a good time and make sure you spend a lot of cash"?

In high season, a worker in the termas might go down on upwards of twenty guys in a day. And I have another bit of news for you: in spite of what some people here have said, almost every terma worker I know ALSO works for herself, on the side. Many - if not most - also have "boyfriends" and "Papai Noeis" whom they certainly DON'T use rubbers for.

In order to make the relevance of this thread BLINDINGLY obvious to the subject at hand, however, last year a guy on this very board reported getting a genital wart from a BBBJ and another one reported having a genital wart and getting a BBBJ from a terma pro anyhow. And these are just the guys who ADMITTEd to this sort of thing. I happen to know, personally, two more guys who frequent this site and who picked up a STD from a Copa pro. Both claim to never have exposed themselves EXCEPT for BBBJs. One caught herpes and the other didn't specify what he caught.

So the long and the short of it is this Adikt: when you have a BBBJ, you're exposing both yourself and the woman to significantly greater risk of disease. That is a FACT, man. Whether you want to face up to it is another question. If this is Safe Sex 101, obviously some people need a refresher course. But I should point out that if I hated you mongers or was a neo-puritan, like you seem to think, I wouldn't bother stating this fact, would I? Instead, I'd be trying to encourage you to take as many risks as possible.

Now, as to this not being "interesting information", given the fact that some folks here are pushing the pure, USDA-grade bullshit about how "termas girls are always tested", I think that it's of great interest to those folks here that DO worry about their health - and maybe, occasionally, about the health of the woman that they are fucking - that they are NOT. How do I know this? I deal with these women all the time outside of the zona, not as a customer, but as someone who's interested in helping them achieve better salaries and work conditions. There are so many ways to get beyond the supposedly "required" health test that it boggles the mind and in the last couple of years I've heard my share of them.

Whether this is a "negative" piece of information or not, I leave it up to each one here to decide. I can't see how this would be "negative", however, unless someone happens to think that "being negative" is presenting any well-known fact that happens to contradict someone else's happy, go-lucky fantasy.

Sloth, here's something for you to consider.

Prostitution is legal in Brazil and foreigners aren't the only men these women fuck.

So when a pro gets a STD, she usually transmits it on to some Brazilian guy who usually isn't only fucking her as well. He, in turn, passes it on to his wife or mistress, who are often the "regular" women you're talking about. STDs don't stop transmitting at the termas door, man. So "regular" women end up getting infected by this sort of thing and guess what? Those regular women are VOTERS and they get pissed off and call for the repression of that "pouca vergonhice lá em Copa". This is how political pressure against prostitution is often generated, my friend, and not by shadowy government illuminati types working behind the scenes on the WSG.

As for humanitarian issues, whether or not these women are making (relatively) a lot of money is completely beside the point, isn't it? Is it OK to give you a disease simply because you make more money than me and can afford better health care?

If I wanted a passionless CBJ, I would stay in the US. In the German FKKs it is the norm to see BBBJs right in the common area.

My experience with Brazilian women is that they are exceptionally clean, more than I can say for many women in the US. While I certainly recommend keeping it covered for intercourse, the day that I recommend CBJs is the day I hang up my gonads.

If you really want to help these women, help them stay off drugs, invest their money, get an education and locate quality care for their children.

If I had to bet, it would be that you got an STD from your garota de programma girlfriend.

macunaima,

i do respect your opinion and now understand your interest in the bbbj debate. i do believe the prostitutes union is making a huge mistake by not trying to make the gfe sex safe in the termas like the fkk model and instead taking the nevade legal brothel model. the legal brothels in navada have signs on the walls that all sex must be with protection. that means cbj and dental dam daty, and of course no kissing. both of which by the way, are much more risky to the receiver than bbbj is to the giver because those couple infections that can surive the mouth are deposited directly into the pussy or the mouth. the human mouth contains some very dangerous bacteria, and absolutely the dirtiest part of the human body other than the arshole. dirty fingernails would be next, which also can result in infections when stuffed into the pussy or mouth.
what resulted from that mistake was that 90% of the customers deserted. due to the lack of business, the prices skyrocketed so the girls could make a living with only a trick or two a day if that. for example, $500 us dollars per hour for sinthetic sex up from $100 for gfe. by the way, i lived close to the northern nevada brothels and observed this happen over a 20 year period.
you still can get bbbj or daty in those places from many of the girls for a big tip. i did a couple years ago. the owners have not gone so far as to vidotape the rooms as far as i know. half now are out of business. the rest struggling,or recruting extremely expensive poro stars to get any business like the bunny ranch. the famous mustang ranch just west of reno went from 200 girls to about 15 before it's demise a few years ago.
i have had a cbj, and it was a waste of time as i could not even feel that wonderful feeling of the tongue around the head of my dick. nothing like it other than an orgasm.
i also enjoy giving a girl pleasure. i do not think she would enjoy me licking her pussy with her pants on.
most brazilian girls love to kiss. that turns me on also.

taking away gfe from the termas, dooms the termas. the girls will have to hit the street like in the us. that presents much more danger to the girls than std's. from another board a escort girl said that 21 girls were killed in the us last year alone. just to be beaten or robbed may be worse than the mild std's risks of gfe.

i can tell you are an intelligence person so i'm sure you know and realize i am right in what i am saying. maybe you and the prostitutes union want the termas to disappear or limp along. that is the most likely senaro with doing away with gfe at the termas. also, the high paying gringos will then find other places to take a sex vacation. there are many other venues, even in south america. girls who need the money will not have the gringos to help support them. rio will lose much of it's tourism. iv'e been to better beaches and cheaper comparable hotels and services elsewhere. hotels in copa will go under, with the resulting loss of business. more people will be unemployed. carnival is only once a year.

now that i have explained the consequences of doing away with bbbj, i think we should get on with other important conversation in this forum. but one last thing. below is what i feel is the risk of sex acts from most risky to the least risky. i am not bsing. this is what every medical professional i know tells me, including one of my best friends who has been envolved in many std studies when he worked in the std field. it is still one of his specialties. and by the way, he does monger once in a while. he does accompany me to the fkk's, but has never been to brazil. he is also recently divorced, but takes his kids to his hawaii condo during our winter when i head to brazil.

high risk
bbba-one would have to have a death wish. leading cause of hiv other than needles. why do you think aids is so prevalent with the gay's?

bbbf-to much risk for me. risking tons of types of std's. it is said that it is not so easy for men to catch hiv this way. so what, i will not risk death. get them tested along with yourself first. i think results can be available in about 3 days now. i spend 3 weeks every year. i would have time if i found a really hot girl who was staying with me.

medium to low risk
data-i have had my hepititus shots for both a and b, but the shot for c is just now being tested. not really my cup of tea anyway.

kissing-lots of crap including herpes simplex i. i know of a guy who caught strep in his mouth from kissing some dirty chick in mexico. most likely way to catch something including hepititus which can kill. i would advise every monger to be vacinated if you value your life. hepititus i heard kills more people in the world than aids. also, i rinse with my little bottle of listerine.

ca-after you remove the comdum, i would advise washing you private area with an antispetic soap during an immediate shower. just think what get's around your private area and can crawl overnight to a safe harbor. hep can live 24 hours outside of an acceptable host area. i have read that hep b kills 25% of it's victims.

fingering pussy or anus- keep your fingernails short as possible and wash well before partaking. the only girl i know that ever caught anything caught a nasty bug from this activity.

low risk
bbbj-a few std's can pass. nothing life threating from every study i have read. every monger that has to have this like myself should be tested to protect the girl. however, in reality the receiver is in more danger because most things can be passed by mouth but not infect the mouth. i like to have the girl rinse her mouth with listerine before we kiss or i get pleasured. i think it makes a huge difference.

very low risk
cf- however, herpes simplex 2 can penetrate a condum and also unprotected gental area. herpes infectes the pussy lips. they are against your body. i think it is important to take a shower before and after.

almost no risk
hj-however, did she wash her hand after the last guy?

so no sex act has no risk. i think the bigest problem that the prostitute union has is that the girls who do not like dicks and do not like to give bbbj cannot compete with the vast majority that do. therefore, they vastly overstate the risks of bbbj and misinform the others.

macunaima, i want you to stay on this forum and keep us informed of the other stuff going on. but lets drop the bbbj stuff now. i think a better thing for the union to do would be to run off any **** girls, however, i don't think any gringo in rio or sp would risk 4 years in a brazilian prison. i have never seen anything like that in brazil, nor would i participate. that's one of the reasons i stay at a hotel where they check the girls id. i think that's also overblown. the sick peds go to cambodia or rumania not, brazil. we like the passion, (gfe) of the brazilian girls.

ciao

cornhole, i'm well aware that asking people to think does not mean that they actually will. howver, i feel better for the attempt.

again, my point is that while it's a rather minor risk for you, it isn't for the girl who's doing this to several different men every day, six days a week. and my point isn't that you should be slapped around for asking women to do this, only that you shouldn't pressure them to do it.

pretty simple to understand. got it this time?

adikt, interesting info on nevada, that. and, of course, kissing is also pretty dangerous. however, i seriously doubt that all mongers would flee from brothels if cbj were required.

but i have a better idea: do like the old brothels did and hire a doctor or med student to give the guys a check-up as they come in. of course, this wouldn't resolve all problems - aids, for example - but it would resolve several. what would mongers feel about such a thing? would it be extremely bothersome to have a doctor take a look at you for 10 minutes or so before heading into a termas if the long term result would be significantly increased security for everyone involved?

this seems to me to be a better way of dealing with the situation, one which would respect everyone's rights and privacy (privacy here defined as per the brazilian constitution, btw: what two people decide to do on their lonesome is no one else's business). an additional benefit is that said doctor could also give a daily exam to the pros. if it was a med student, it wouldn't mean that much in terms of extra overhead, either.

what do you all think?

as far as the union and the termas are concerned, many pros in rio want brothels to come back for the exact same reasons that you mention. i don't know what the union's "official" current stance on this is, but i do know that it was floated as a platform item a couple years back at the national conference of sex trade workers. i think you are absolutely correct when you claim that a well-run, regulated brothel is much safer for everyone, all around. the question is, however, how to regulate them. most governments shy away from this question, so the nevada experience is quite interesting to me.

i know that you consider sex tourism to be a top-dollar affair, but over all, it's really a very small part of the state's economy. yes, it's an immense contribution to copacabana's economy and to the livelihood of the girls who work there. however, it's very hard to make that argument in the city or state government for the very good reason that copa is one small neighborhood in an immense city and, frankly, you mongers tend to stay in one place. your cash rarely goes beyond the neighborhood frontiers. you have an inflated notion of its impact, in the overall scheme of things, because to you, copa is brazil - or at least rio.

another problem is that, given the way rio's sex trade is organized, most money enterews into the women's hands directly, which is fantastic from my view point, but bad from the viewpoint of the "owners" of the night scene, who rarely get any of the take other than what you guys spend on booze and door. believe it or not, help is not an incredibly profitable enterprise: just a moderately successful disco. all this means is that few economic movers-and-shakers are willing to go to bat for women's rights to turn tricks. and the termas... man, we are talking about maybe 16 establishments, at most, in a city of some 10,000,000 people. they are a flea biting the rottwieler's ass, economically speaking. a gold-plated flee, perhaps, but a flea nonetheless.

furthermore, copa is tha bad boy of neighborhoods here in the city and very, very few people on the municipal council would cry tears of sorrow if it took a dive. our mayor gets his backing from the good burghers of ipanema, são conrado, the centro and leblon who see copa as a trashy cesspool which caters to "the wrong kind" of tourist. our current governor gets her political base from the evangelical christians of the baixada fluminense, an area which is completely off of most mongers' radar screens. neither of these two blocks have any special vested intrest in copa and one of them would actually consider the elimination of the sex trade to be a great moral victory.

you guys need to catch the 175 bus one day and take a drive up north and take a look around. that'll give you a more realistic notion of what the sex tourism industry represents in the wider scheme of things here in rio.

this is why i stay away from economic arguments and concentrate on the human and constitutional rights ones, where pros actually have a leg to stand on, at least at the federal level.

as for the **** issue, the union is one of the prime movers in getting bars, termas and hotels to card. of course, no 25 year old pro wants to compete with a 16 year old, so this is in pro's economic interest as well.

frankly, it's been hard to get the union to even have much of an interest in copa as - in the world of brazilian sex workers -copa is generally considered a damn good deal, where women makes lots of cash and need relatively little aid. the current big issue here is trying to keep the city from running the girls out of largo do são fransisco and the surrounding areas as part of the "urban renewal" campaign. but i think that people are beginning to open their eyes to the dangers of this anti-sexual tourism crusade, being that the women in recife and forteleza, where it's been piloted, are complaining about police corruption and harassment of clients.

Macunaima,

I love your idea. I understand there is a new saliva HIV test. US may not have approved it yet. I heard that in Canada it is being sold over the counter. I have no proof of this though. Can anybody shed light on this? I heard that results are available in about 5 min. I also heard that the problem may be to many false positives. SO WHAT. It would send the person for the full very accurate blood test Also, mongers should want to know if they are hiv positive. Caught early, one may eventually die of old age like magic Johnson probably will. He has been positive for about 20 years, and his problem has not progressed into aids. Caught later may mean a year or two at best. I think that the med person would have to take some blood also, Hep. I don't know how long it would take, but drinks could be served in an outside waiting room until the person is deemed safe. The med person would have to have a good microscope and knowledgeable.

I'll bet it would work, but would have problems with the moral right. Safe sex is the very last thing they want. HIV is God's work to a couple of my religious business associates. The fear keeps people chaste.

Ronaldo deny million-dollar arrangement

Posted on 12 May 2005 - 21:45

Real Madrid football star Ronaldo and his former girlfriend Daniella Cicarelli denied on Thursday that they had signed a million-dollar agreement in case of separation before they became a couple.

In a press release, the couple, who on Wednesday confirmed they had separated, denied press reports that she would receive €4.5 million because the relationship failed.

"The matrimonial union was not carried out under any pre-nuptial agreement, rather simply on the basis of trust," the release said, saying no party would benefit financially from the separation.

Cicarelli, a model and presenter for MTV channel, returned Wednesday from Madrid.

According to Folha de Sao Paulo, Cicarelli wants to resume her old life and jog daily around the Ibirapuera park, because she feels "fat".

The newspaper said that the couple broke up because of jealousy.

On the one hand Ronaldo complained that Cicarelli was butting into his life too much, and she countered that he left her at home while enjoying nightlife in Spain.

Folha de Sao Paulo also said that Cicarelli was bitter at Ronaldo because he did not travel to Brazil in April to be with her after she suffered a miscarriage.

Ronaldo and Cicarelli began dating in June last year and on February 14 threw a lavish party at the French castle of Chantilly that cost €700 000 to mark their union.

There will be no need for divorce proceedings. Ronaldo and Daniella had an unofficial marriage ceremony at the party in France, but they never officially married because he was still going through a legal divorce from his first wife, Milene Domingues, with whom he has a son.

I have a girlfriend in Brazil who I've been visiting for around a year. We have unprotected sex and I'm getting pretty worried about her getting pregnant and using that to keep me attached to her. I would like to ask if anyone here is familiar with birth control pills, if they are easy to get over the counter and what are they called down there?

Thanks

Be careful my friend, not even taking STD's or any other problems you can get into consideration yes if you are dropping your load inside you run the risk of getting her pregnant. I believe that if you went into a pharmacy in Brasil and asked for controlle nasciemento you would be able to purchase birth control over the counter no problem but the question is, will she use it. I had a Brazilian woman come to New York on Business not too long ago and we started fooling around in her hotel room and before you know it she jumped on me and I had not slipped on the condom yet, it was good and I wasn't worried about STD's but after a couple of days of this I asked her where she was in her cycle and she assured me that it wasn't time for her to get pregnant but you have to be careful cause this can certainly ruin your fun.

What happens to the gringo that gets one pregnant but wants her to have an abortion and she refuses? Does he become financially liable for child support or other nightmare for 18 years? What is his responsibility legally (not morally)?

MOST of them are looking for a ticket to the US directly, or at least, some financial security while at home in Brazil, and since Brazil is not a banana boat nation (decent infrastructure and US contacts), I would not be surprised if the do have ways to track dudes down in the US. That said, if you never gave these hoe$ your real name and email address, then problem solved. Birth control pills are "pilulas de controle de natalidade".

You should be aware that these ain't generic pills that you can just pop i9nto any ol' woman's mouth: there are several different types available and many women (such as my wife) are alergic to some, but not others. Dosages vary, etc. etc. You need to have medical accompaniment for the first month or so to figure out if the pills are really working without causing any side effects.

So getting them over the counter and having your GF take them on her own without accompaniment is a bad idea. It could very easily result in her getting knocked up.

As for legal responsabilities.

Brazilian family law works very well. If you get a woman pregnant and the kid is proven to be yours and you refuse to pay child support, you are looking at jail time in Brazil. And yes, there are lawyers who will happily track you down in the U.S. over this one.

Its possibly true that you have to pay or do the time, but there is no way they can track you down. Get a fuckin' reality check. It would cost so much that you'd had to be a millionaire so that would be profitable.

I know a guy who actually married a girl in Brasil, got kids, divorced and doesn't pay a shit. He comes and goes as he pleases and the woman can't do a shit.

This is more a MORAL case. If you have a kid with a brasilian girl, especially a working girl what are ypou going to do? If you just abandon the kid, he/she will end up either a thief or a hoe or both.

To AVOID this situation use condom, that's the smart thing to do.

There is a simple solution for preventing pregnancy during unprotected sex:

Aim for the chin!

In all seriousness, the withdraw method works a lot better than folks give it credt for. I was talking about this with a buddy of mine the other day. Both of us have had more unprotected sex than we care to admit, but neither of us has ever fathered a child. Why? We are both expert "pull out" guys.

Another option for guys who don't trust their chick is Depo Provera. This an injected form of birth control that lasts for three months. A Brazilian friend of mine (who is a major player) always gets his steady girl on this stuff so he can do her raw. He loves it because he can take her to the clinic himself and be absolutely certain that she is using contraception. None of this "pill down the sink" bullshit.

FK,

You are an excellent poster and I've enjoyed your comments while I've been a member of this board. However, the withdrawal method is, well, the equivalent of *trying to get pregnant. Frankly, you've been lucky. The number of sperm that "escape" in the inital PRE-ejaculate numbers in the millions (in a healthy adult male). You sure you really wanna take that risk?

I think not.

The idea that the pre-ejaculate is sufficient to cause pregnancy is the conventional wisdom and is parrotted far and wide. Most reproductive health agencies and organizations adamantly preach the safe-sex gospel and really don't want to encourage anyone to engage in unsafe sex. So they will tell you that the withdrawl method is ineffective. However, this is not the whole truth.

Studies have shown that withdrawl is between 81% and 96% effective in preventing pregnancy, depending on the skill of the people involved. So at the low end of the range, 19% of couples using the withdrawl method for a year will have a pregnancy. Compare this to the 85% chance per year of pregnancy using no contraception at all. Wost-case scenario, the withdrawl method reduces the chance of pregnancy BY A FACTOR OF FOUR!

Studies have also shown that the effectiveness of the withdrawl method is almost entirely dependent on the discipline and sexual experience of the male. The dreaded "sperm-laden pre cum" is not really a factor. Pre-ejaculate is primarily produced by the Cowper's gland and does not contain live sperm. The only time it does contain live sperm is when you are going for your second pop and sperm from the previous ejaculation remains in the urethra. Mostly, couples using the withdrawl method get pregnant when the guy fucks up and doesn't pull out BEFORE he starts coming. Guys who DO know what they are doing and have the self-control to pull it off can have an effectiveness of 96% -- which means they could expect one pregnancy about every 25 years.

My tips on bailing out:

1. Pull out WELL before you start coming. You should have to "flog the bishop" for several seconds to get yourself to come after pulling out. If you are pulling out and ejaculating immediately without needing to stroke your dick a bit, then you are probably leaving a squirt or two inside.

2. Make sure you get all of your "daddy batter" well away from her little "bread basket", or you'll soon have a "bun in the oven." Splash conception is a real possibility. Aim for her tits, or even her mouth, if you're with a pretty liberal chick.

3. After your first pop you still have viable sperm hanging around in the urethra and on the folds of skin at the tip of your dick. Before you stick your cock back into her, take a [CodeWord140] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord140) and wash up thoroughly. Otherwise your pre-cum WILL have live sperm in it.

4. Know yourself. If you are a hair-trigger, premature ejaculating type, don't even thing about using the withdrawl method! You're bound to fuck it up. If your the type of guy that gets completely mind-fucked and distracted just before coming, don't use the withdrawl method. Using it effectively takes self-control, discipline, and knowledge of your own body.

Don't take any of the above as advice against using condomns! Condomns can save your life. However, if you are planning on not wearing a raincoat, for Allah's sake pull out! Contrary to popular belief, it is a whole lot better than nothing.

Thanks for a lively discussion. However, I always wondered about the involuntary pregnancy. I am really talking about the condom breakage. I am sure this is a real possibility since I know few friends who experienced this situation. In case it results in pregancy, are the mongers somehow be responsible for that? I always thought the garotas are responsible to protect themselves (by taking pills or otherwise) since it could be a daily hazard in their profession. Does anybody know about situation where a monger impregnated a working girl due to condom breakage? And what were the consequences? Some food for thought.

I'll say this again, & end my contribution.

Some of the data you're citing isn't correct. Pre-ejaculate occurs LONG before people begin orgasm, and often before any significant accompanying "feeling." In fact, this usually occurs during foreplay & insertion alone produces the first "deposit."

(I hope a gazillion years in medical schoo/residency, teaching medicine & 17 years of practice are worth something here. :) )

Anyway, withdrawal is FAR more likely to create more humans than condoms will.

BandyDude, are you serious? Condom breaks, its YOUR child. Now whether she has the wits and the means to obtain a lawyer to track you down thats another story. I too have fucked a few GDPs without a condom and I cant tell you how worisome its been a) Did I catch something? b) Is she pregant? Although I have used to withdrawal method as well, I know I have been lucky. Yes, you can get a girl impregnated with precum. I have no idea about that 96% safe stat but I guess its also depend on the girl. If she is very fertile and has a small pussy, pregnancy risks are higher. If she is deep as a cavern, and your johnson doesnt reach anywhere near her eggs might be, then its pretty slim that she will get knocked.

Can you get tracked? OF course. Will you be? The likelihood is slim if you are dealing with an uneducated GDP who will not likely go to through the Brazillian legal system to push the civil claim, and I am sure that takes money and information about you that she hopefully wont have. But if you stayed at a hotel where you provided your passport, gave your sweetie your name, home number and email address, how difficult will it be to find you?

Then there's the moral issue here. You creating a child that you will not support that will probably grow up to be a GDP (if its a girl). So please, guys although I know there is no subsitute for that bareback feeling.:). Wrap it up, cause the stress is not worth the night of pleasure.

If you must:

Do it in a termas and pay in cash where at least the girls are regularly tested

Again wrong info. Things don't work this way. At least in Europe you don't get visa/residence permit automatically if you have a child. Unlike in Brasil. If you want permanencia, just get a child with a brasilian girl and you're home free.

Even marriage doesn't qualify you to receive visa automatically. In Brasil you get permanencia.

So even if you have a child with brasilian, she won't be able to enter your country, unless you INVITE her over. That's the way it is in Europe, don't know about USA but I beleive its pretty much like that too.

There are alot of risks involved in using that shot. I don't think I wanna risk having my girl become fat or frigid over it.

I understand the risks involved with std's and by no means I would be crazy enough to screw a working woman raw. I've known this lady for awhile and she is a family girl with a 8 to 5 office job living with her parents.

I have used the pullout method and it has proven very effective thus far, but I know the risk of pregnancy is still there.

Marriage in Brazil allows you to ASK for permanency. It does not give it to you automatically. Beleive me. I'm dealing with a case right now at the Federal Police. All they need to do is allege that your marriage is fake - for any number of reasons - and there's no permanent visa. Sorry, Perk, but that's what really occurs here.

As for having a child with a Brazilian, if she can prove it's yours (and that's the rub right there, because she needs to nail your ass while you are in country), the child is ipso facto a citizen of your nation by blood. This can be used as a request for a permanent - if not immediately, then certainly later when the kid is older.

In the U.S, things are a bit different from Europe, but basically, if she can prove you're the dad, she has the right to ask for a visa. It's a rockier road and it'll take some time, but she will almost certainly get it eventually. The kid's an American citizen. His mom thus has the right to ask for permanency under family reunion laws if he goes to the U.S. All she needs to do is register the kid with the consulate with a determination saying he's yours and proof that you are an American citizen. Again, this takes some doing, but I've seen it done in the past.

RE: your acquaintance's problem. It seems that he was taken to court then, wasn't he? He's gotten off for now, but it's a pretty easy thing to show that he's lying re: his salary if the woman keeps at it. Half the men in Brazil have used that old "I can't pay 'cuase my salary doesn't cover it" dodge. Most of them eventually end up with their balls in the thumbscrews anyhow. Why should it be any different with this guy?

You have to show to FP that you're really married and live together and they do make inspection, interview you, your wife, doorman, neighbours and probably their dog. But before this interview you may stay in Brasil WO visa and that's it.

About my acquaintance, yes he's been in court in Brasil and the outcome from that was:

His employer (brasilian) lied his income, but he got fired because his actions draw police to his work.

His wife ended up with nothing regardless that the court made him to pay alimony to the girl.

Child is bralsilian citizen only. The father refuses to register the child in his contry's embassy and there is NOTHING the girl can do (she doesn't have citizenship of that country)

Legally the child has the right for citizenship, but to get that done you need legal assistance and that costs MONEY.

So what do you think happens to your girl when she becomes pregnant? That's right, she becomes fat and frigid! ;-) The difference is that with the Depo Provera you won't be sending her a check every month for the next 18 years.

Depo can indeed have some nasty side effects -- particularly weight gain. However, you won't know if your girl has a problem with it until you get her to take it in the first place. If she reacts poorly to it, then you don't give her the next shot and the side effects should go away after a few months. If she doesn't have a problem with it . . .

JACKPOT! You now can fuck her senseless without putting up with condomns and can be 99.7% sure that she won't get pregnant. More importantly, you know that she can't ditch the birth control and get pregnant on purpose in order to get you to marry her or give her money. All you have to do is drive her ass to the clinic four times a year.

Now that's what I call "peace of mind."

ThanksIf you have a child with brasiilian woman you'll get pretty easily a permanent visa. Why would you want citizenship.

Anyway FP will help you out on this. You need to register yourself as a father of the child in FP and they'll tell you which forms you need to fill.

A child with a Brazilian citizen will most definitely get you a permanent.

Citizenship can be applied for a couple years later.

Why would you want citizenship?

Well, first of all, why not? You can have dual citizenship these days and two passports are always better than one.

Secondly, if there weren't a kid involved, but just marriage, a break up could result in you losing your visa.

Finally, there are certain jobs and positions that can only be hald by Brazilian citizens.

And Finally, finally, once a citizen, your ass is no longer targeted, officially, as a gringo. Personally, I do not trust the FP farther than I can shot-put them, nor the Brazilian congress. I do not feel safe in my rights as a permanent resident.

Sorry for the newbie question but after reading the posts I just need a little clarification on how to pay at termas.

I assume you put your clothes and hence wallet/cash in some sort of locker and your charges are tracked by some other means.

My questions are:

1) Do you pay the ladies at the time of service or do you pay when you leave with your bar charges.

2) Is tipping normal.

3) Can you pay you entire total (bar and ladies) with a credit card?

Thanks guys

In Rio you pay everything when you leave the Terma, except for centaurus where you pay for one girl upfront. In SP several clubs have onsite facilities - here you pay the girls directly.

I have never tipped at a terma in either Rj or SP. But i am generous with drinks and food for the girls.

Most Rio and SP termas will allow you to pay the bar and room expense with creditcards, but want cash for the girls. i have on a few occasions had to pay everything with a card and they levied quite a steep fee for that service.

It varies by country. Some countries' laws provide that being a parent transmits citizenship. If you're a US citizen and you have lived extensively in the US, or if your parents did, then you transmit citizenship at the moment you spooge into the ****-slot. Some lucky mongers are nationals of countries where just impregnating a **** doesn't make the child a citizen.

As far as what happens when your brand new baby is there, if you've made a nice little American, then the baby has the right to a passport from (not a visa to) the U.S. This naturally gives the baby the right to travel to the US. It does not give the **** you drunkenly coupled with any rights. Only when the baby is 18 may he/she file an immigrant petition on behalf of the then faded flower that its mother has become.

Sooo.... you don't need to worry about a pross with a brat showing up on your doorstep in Dayton any time soon. But it's still something to be concerned about. Be smart -- use a rubber or come deep, deep in her mouth.

I read a Newsweek report on that and it says that the Brazil government is doing very little to erraticate the Dengue Fever. knives are touchy. technically, you can carry a knife up to a certain size, as long as it's foldable (i.e. a pocket knife). but something minimally useful to defend yourself with (let's say a buck knife) is on the legal edge for blade length and the cops will squeeze youif you give them any excuse.

This message is to inform you of some recent developements in Rio de
Janeiro that may affect your travel plans.

Last night June 11, 2005 - 29 Americans were arrested and are being deported for suspected "Sexual Tourism" and drugs, and also without having Identification on them.

This is a front page story in Brazil's largest newspaper O'Globo and on the News.

The group of 29 Americans were on a boat called the Shangrila' along with 40 prostitutes.

Brazilian Federal Police who have been investigating operators of sexual tourism intercepted the boat in the Marina da Gloria.

The organizer of the event, an American, Kenneth Graham who has had problems in the past with this kind of "boat ride", has been arrested and is being held on accusations of running a sexual tourism agency. His photo has appeared in Brazilian newspapers and TV news. The other Americans are being deported within 3 days and will have their Visas revoked and not be able to return to Brazil.

All the women involved are regulars of the Help/Meia Pataca scene. They were released with incident.

There is a REAL crackdown on Sexual Tourism in Rio. Americans are being photographed and watched. This is part of the Patriot Act, - read the laws, if you go to another country with the intention of sexual tourism, you can go to jail in the USA for up to 20 years.

BMC, has been investigated and found not to be involved in any illegal activites. Our boat cruises have not and do not include Prostitutes. We do not provide prostitutes or promote sexual tourism. Prostitution is ILLEGAL in Brazil. Although it is tolerated at certain establishments.

Our advice has always been to stay away from Help/Meia Pataca and street workers. Also stay away from events/parties etc, such as the boat ride above.

Copacabana is a marked area, so be careful, also violence has skyrocketed against foreign tourists recently. American, European, Asian, Black, White have been targeted in the Copacabana area.

The Patriot Act does NOT apply to the current raid on the boat that was mentioned below. I suggest you read the entire act. The Patriot Act was established to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled.

On the other hand, there are laws that allow the US to prosecute Americans that travel abroad to specifically engage in illegal sexual behavior with minors.

folks here know by now that i am not a monger and have nothing to say re: promoting prostitution. i am an anthropologist studying sexual toruism and a guy who works on a political level as a private citizen with the local prostitutes' union for better laws which protecting the working woman - particularly her control over her body and wages - and making the whole scene safer for everyone involved. i am also a brazilian citizen with close to a decade of life in rio de janeiro.

i've also been watching kenny and talking to his clients and the women he hires for several years now, ever since his 2003 bust.

so i think i'm pretty up on brazil's laws regarding prostitution and the like and what's been going on. here's my take on all the comments about crackdowns below. like all internet info, this should be taken with a grain of salt...

1) prostitution is not illegal in brazil. pimping, pandering, production of unliscenced pornography, seduction of minors, and promoting and benefitting financially from prostitution are. "sexual tourism" is considered, by brazilian law, to be any tourism which violates the above laws. thus, a tourist who contracts a prostitute is not a sexual tourist, by law, unless it can be shown that he is also, say, a panderer or a pornographer, etc.

2) if kenny is in violation of any of the above laws, it's the last one. however, if that's the case, so are the owners of help, ciccolina and every termas in town. absent direct testimony from the women invlved, it will be very difficult to convict kenny of anything. note that even the federal cop in charge of this bust has admitted that it looks like no laws have been broken. this is not that likely because all of the women i've talked to who have work for kenny in the past honestly seem to like him. he's been good for business.

3) as i've claimed several times here and elsewhere, an anti-sexual tourism crusade has been brewing for some time now in brazil. we just recently received a 400,000 usd grant to "crack down" on sexual tourism and trafficking of women.

4) obviously, given the legality of prostitution and the substantial economic interests involved, it is very unlikely that the federal government is going to declare open season on gringos who happen to be looking for commercial sex. this is compounded by the fact that 400,000 simolions doesn't go a long way in the repression biz.

5) the solution has thus been to orquestrate a series of highly publicized busts of very vulnerable people. kenny, unfortunately, is a perfect fall-guy for this sort of thing. because:

a) he's a gringo.

b) he's black, as are many if not most of his clients. black sex tourism in rio is on the upswing and the local white burghers are appalled. a black american man, dressed straight out of an mtv raps video, is the current paranoid fantasy of those brazilians who fear that gringos want our women.

c) kenny's a free-lancer barging in on a very controlled, very delicately balanced local industry. most termas and boite owners have warm relations with the local cops who are in many cases partners of the clubs in question.

kenny is thus the perfect target. he has no legal or extra-legal muscle and he's eactly the kind of stereotype the feds want to parade in front of the nation as the gringo threat to brazilian morality.

this is all a passion play directed towards joão and maria sitting at home in realengo watching their rede globo. this is kenny's second bust (the first ammounted to nothing at all). thousands of gringos involved in sexual tourism in rio and the feds bust the same guy twice. the same guy who just happens to be the main gringo operator on the orla, the free-lancer who is giving all the club owners a headache, albiet minor one.

gee, what are the chances of that occurring? go figure...

now, over the years, several gringos have speculated here and on other sites about how "easy" it would be to get involved in the commercial sex scene down here as an operator or pimp or club owner. what is happening to kenny is a very good eample of why this is a bad idea. kenny was working a **** hair's breadth on the other side of the letter of the law (certainly much closer to its spirit, however, than the owners of centaurus), but he is now being set up to become brazil's poster boy in the global campaign against sexual tourism.

as for the patriot act being used against mongers, i have my doubts. however, all you republican boys out there should be aware that usaid has been spending huge sums of cash down here to help generate extremely fatuous statistics which supposedly document brazil as the number one supplier of the global slave trade in women. i and a couple of my colleagues occassionally write papers eposing this scam, but we're a couple of kids with sand buckets and soup spoons trying to turn back the tide. the global trend - fully supported by your tax dollars - is to do everything possible to make your "hobby" unviable and prostitution more illegal and hence more dangerous for everyone involved. usaid has, under the bush admin, become the number one promoter of born-again christian ethics in the world. not that clinton was much better, mind, but things are getting really bad when usaid yanks aids education money from brazil simply because we have not made prostitution illegal.

so be set for all sorts of illegal and semi-legal harassment of gringos in the future. it's unfair and illegal, but dems da breaks and it's your own governments who are supporting this move.

what you can do to help protect yourself from harassment while in brazil:

1) carry a legitimate registered copy of your passport on you at all times.

2) stick to the main monger scenes, such as the termas, help and etc. don't go off exploring new venues on your own. don't presume that every brazilian woman is really a prostitute and you just need to find her price.

3) ask to see id from any woman you go with. she'll have to show it at most hotels at any rate and with the current climate, you do not want to get caught with an **** pro or in a sting operation.

4) be cool. running around screaming english and in general acting like a frat boy on spring break in fort lauderdale pisses off the people who live here. copacababa is a residential zone, oddly enough, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. loudly describing what you'd like to do to that 15 year-old who's passing by in front of help with her family is not a good idea. if you look like a shmuck with no sense of decorum and who's out of control, it becomes that much more likely that someone will complain about you.

5) for god's sake, follow the law. do not pander. this means let the woman establish the fact that she is a pro and quote her price. do not ask her how much she charges or if she is a pro. if you have to ask, she probably isn't, or is at least off duty and you have technically broken the law. do not take pictures or home movies of your "adventures": this is technically unliscenced pornography and is against the law. do not think that you can somehow get involved in the supply side of the brazilian sex industry. i know it's a dearly cherished fantasy of some mongers and would-be mac daddies, but i'm sorry, it ain't happening.

6) realize that if any third party is involved in procuring a prostitute for you, that person is technically a criminal and you are an accessory to the crime. this is why "package tours" which include sexual favors - or hint at including sexual favors - are a bad idea. the legitimate (or at least not illegal) sexual industry down on copa is pretty much tied up in the hands of a few local promoters who make their money by providing a safe space for pros and clients to meet. this is what help is all about. anyone who needs to make money pimping down here is at the bottom of the food-chain and shouldn't be trusted.

Dont believe the hpe. First off, I was in Rio at the time of this bust. I spent 5 nights on Rua Santa Clara and had a blast with about 2 different chicas a da. There is NOT a REAL crackdown on the sex trade in Rio, are you kidding me! Just the exact opposite. I didn't have to walk 5 minutes to pull some a$$ off Avenida Atlantico after about 6pm when night fell. I didnt have to cab it 5 minutes to see a Copa escort I called from the classifieds in O Dia or O Globo for as little as 50-80R per hour. Escorts in Centro are even cheaper, but I was lazy and wanted to remain in walking distance. A$$ remains to be all over the place and available, come on!

Listen, there is increased violence against tourists in Copa because you simply have man more idiots hanging out there than ever, flashing their bling bling and posing like ballers. I saw this dude walk past me on Av. Copa with a big ass gold chain and he was like "whats up dog". If I was broke and living in Rio and saw that sh*t, I would jack his a$$ too! Obviously this kinda stuff attracts 1) poor jackers who live amoung Rio´s ~1-2mm extremely poor people and 2) corrupt shakedown artists and cops who look for easy marks out of whom they can make an example, plain and simple. Idiots who profile b drinking Hennesey in Help and refuse to spend 5-10R on a cab at 3am in order to bring a$$ home deserve to get robbed. Dumb motherf*ckers!

If you keep a low profile, remain smart, and try to make at least the attempt to learn some Brazilian culture, language, and fit in (or remain under the radar screen), things will be fine. You might even pull some great non-pro or semi-pro p*ssy while in Brazil.

On point 5, I'd strongly disagree if you are in Help etc. Of all the guys I've spoken too, BIG problems start when you don't arrange a price before going off with the girl. Do you suggest that you let her make up the price after the act? Theoretically she could demand 500R$ after 30mins in your room, after you said WTF, she proceeds to destroy your hotel room then you. The cops also will enforce non payment with GDP's, your asking for trouble.

This Kenny guy, why don't they deport him? Does he actually have a legimate business there as well? Surely if he was on a tourist visa he could be kicked out on the grounds of running a business. Also if you want to make a movie in Brasil, you need a special visa with a local sponsor. Would this apply to pornography as well?

Macunaima

Knifefish, you misread me or I didn't make myself clear. OF COURSE you should establish a price beforehand. You should, however, let HER make it clear that she's for sale before you start haggling. Otherwise, it's technically pandering. Once she's broken the ice, you are legally in the clear to ask what you want.

Maybe that was clearer.

"Also if you want to make a movie in Brasil, you need a special visa with a local sponsor. Would this apply to pornography as well?"

Oh yes. Even more so.

"The authorities don't wanna put a "gringo" in prison (particularly an African American), because we bring the tourist dollars."

Actually, that's not why he'll be let loose, Rasta. Busting Kenny is unlikely to stop the flow of tourists here bt it IS likely to make would-be mac-daddies and gringo pimps think twice.

Kenny will ultimately be let free because, frankly, they have no proof that he broke any law whatsoever. But he is now officially on the fed's shit list, so he can look for more harassment at any opportunity and the first time they can legally get him on something, they won't hesitate to send his ass home.

You guys always overestimate the power of your buck. Frankly, as I've eplained elsewhere, the seual tourism dollar is concentrated in relatively few hands in Copa and is not well-liked by the rest of the municipal authorities - let alone the federal government. So no, don't epect to be given lee-way simply because you're spending cash here. Brazil is actually a fairly wealthy country and follows its own political trends. They won't bust most mongers because, frankly, most sober-minded people don't see you folks as too much of a problem as long as you keep a relatively low profile. They WILL, however, bust independent gringo operators. With relish.

Macunaima,

U are correct in your assessment of the Brasilian commercial sex trade. However, it seems that Kenny will never learn....however, he'll be outta the 'joint' in two shakes of a rabbit's tale. The authorities don't wanna put a "gringo" in prison (particularly an African American), because we bring the tourist dollars. The authorities are also aware that African American tourism to Brasil is growing exponentially, and don't want to upset that in any way.....I'm afraid you over estimate the value of your dollars. If your assumption were true, don't you think that the authorites would at least make Copacabana a safe place for tourists? Most Brazilians view the occupants of Copacabana as trash.

I frankly don't think that most Brazilians would cry bitter tears of sorrow if the monger dollar went elsewhere.

However, to answer your question, things are not bad PRESUMING you know how to be relatively discreet. If you act like you're in an MTV video or on spring break in Tijuana, you will be seen as a target. Just be cool and nothing is likely to happen to you.

I am a black male, and have been here 3 weeks. I was in Rio at the time of the sex cruise assault, and barely noticed. I spent that weekend picking up broads at the usually spots, and chicas didnt mention sh*t. It was slow, but it was also winter...

I am in Bahia, and having a blast. I get some wierd looks in Aeroclubbe, but its mainly from teenie-boobers admiring my fresh Prada shades and styling polos (its like being at a local mall in the states. These teens are funny).

But in reality, if you try your damnest to learn anything about Brazil: language, culture, etc. You are in like Flynn. I enrolled in a language class here in Salvador, and partook in some Sao Joao festivities inside and outside of the city, and have met droves of non-pro garota action. They may hate the MTV image of Americans, but they love those trying to learn the language, enjoy, the food, and figure out the dancing and music. I have gone to some super, local, working-class dives in Salvador, and its nothing but love man, seriously.

The problem is too many fake-gangsta, m*therf*ckers come here with their d00-rags and airforce 1s and speak not Portuguese or Spanish and think every garota on the beach, bus, mall, and restaurant is a hooker for sale. Not the case I have noticed, and trust me, during my first trip to Rio in 2000, I was one of those clowns. Lesson learned, and smiling about it right now!

As for the dollar: American tourism is not a big driver here at all.. I mean, at all. The hookers have plenty of Euros, rich Brazilians, and traveling businessmen to get their rocks from. Maybe not at inflated gringo prices, but plenty of action is available.

That is my observation.

Bill, there has always been an anti-American streak in Brazilian culture that seems to parallel their fascination (sometime obsession) with all things American. It is kind of a love-hate relationship. Their politicians and journalistic elites often use anti-American rhetoric to make political hay (same as our pals in Europe), but the average Brazilian-on-the-street is usually friendly towards and interested in Americans. I know, it seems kind of weird.

The problems of late have to do with a clash between sex tourism and Brazilian cultural values. Brazilian women have been featured of late in a lot of MTV rap videos, which is bringing in a certain kind of sex tourist to Rio -- the black kind. Lately we've been sending our "Mac Daddy Wannabees" down to Rio to party with the girls, and the Great White Powers that Be in Rio não gostam!

Don't let anyone try to tell you that racial prejudice does not exist in Brazil. In a lot of ways, the prejudice is even MORE pervasive than in the US, and is all the more insidious because most Brazilians tend to believe the propaganda that Brazil doesn't really have a race problem. Racism is a lot more complicated in Brazil, too. Where we see Black and White, they recognize various shades in between.

Our new breed of MTV sex tourist creates problems on two levels. First, they are obviously sex tourists and don't even pretend to be subtle about it. This isn't the Brazilian way. Commercial sex clashes with Brazil's basic Catholic values and is tolerated only as long as it is kept on the down low. Second, they are black, and while a rich black man in Brazil is tolerated, he is expected to comport himself like a rich white Brazilian. It offends white Brazilian sensibilities that these American ghetto refugees have the cash to come down to Rio and fuck their white women. Most white Brazilian men wouldn't admit it, but they really would rather not take seconds from a black.

The boat arrest doesn't have as much to do with anti-Americanism (at least no more than usual) as it does with the current breed of tourist visiting Rio. Police harrasment is just Rio's way of rolling out the "unwelcome mat." If you blend in and keep a low profile, you shouldn't have any problem.

Just leave the bling at home.

- Estamos combatendo o turismo sexual no Brasil. Graham será enquadrado em quatro artigos do Código Penal referentes a exploração sexual: 227, 228, 229 e 230 - disse o delegado.

okay, here's a rough translation of the article below for the portuguese-challenged. it's been a long time since i've used my portuguese, so all you experts will have to cut me some slack.

__________________________________________
american kenneth ronald graham, arrested saturday night by federal police and charged with sexual exploitation, will be referred to the polinter [trans. note: a branch of the police? not sure.], according to spokesman felicio laterca of the operation center of the federal police immigration office. graham was caught red-handed with a group of twenty-eight americans and forty women that left the gloria marina on the schooner "shangrila." in addition to arresting graham, the police processed the rest of the foreigners and fined each of them r$ 828 (approximately us $340) -- the maximum amount. they also had the expiration date of their visas reduced for suspicion of sexual tourism and were given three days to leave the country.

saturday's operation was launched after federal police received information that graham was promoting the event onboard the boat.

all involved were aboard the schooner "shangrila" which was leaving the gloria marina with forty women, who were all prostitutes, according to the police.

furthermore, they were accompanied by a photographer and a brazilian with dual american citizenship who was to serve as a translator. graham was previously charged in 2003 with the sexual exploitation of a minor.

the police received an anonymous tip that the americans were promoting a sex party onboard the schooner. however, federal police did not find drugs, **** women or any substantial evidence that sexual exploitation was occurring on the boat.

all of the women, who worked in a club in copacabana, were released the same day. they were only questioned by the police and were not charged with any crime.

"we are fighting sexual tourism in brazil. graham will be charged with violating four articles of the criminal code concerning sexual exploitation -- articles 227, 228, 229, and 230," said the police spokesman.

I spent two days at a conference on trafficking of women and it was... enlightening.

Dr. Roberto Maia, the head of the federal police wing in Rio that works at repressing sexual tourism and the like, proudly presented the recent bust as a great step forward in combatting this scourge of Brazilian women. When cross-examined about the arrest, however, Maia hemmed and hawed, admitted that no crime had occurred, that the U.S. consulate had intervened and that the men were released. He appeared to be highly uncomfortable about the whole thing.

When the head of the local feminist union asked, "Well, if the men were innocent, then why did you try to deport them? And if they were suspected of serious crimes, again, why did you try to deport them?", Maia clearly stated that they had committed no crime at all but that the PF kicked them out because "we don't support that sort of thing here in Brazil". Then folks from the prostitutes' union began asking "What thing? Prostitution? But it's legal, isn't it? So why, again, did you try to deport the clients?"

Maia then changed his story and claimed that the PF tried to boot Kenny's party-goers because they "had lied on their visa reports and didn't come here for tourism", to which someone responded, "Hell, a trip around the bay on a party boat: sure sounds like tourism to me."

Maia was clearly flustered and hadn't expected to be blindsided with this sort of information at a conference of his presumed allies.

And this, people, is why this kind of information needs to be spread about among those of us who are seriously working to stop trafficing while protecting the rights of self-employed prostitutes and their clients, as the Brazilian constitution specifies. If you guys keep incidents like these to yourselves, you allow the police to present clearly irregular and even illegal operations as a "great victory" to the public relations people.

As people here should know by now I, personally, do not support mongering or engage in it myself. However, your rights as a tourist in this country MUST be respected by the Brazilian government. If you have not broken any laws and are not suspected of a crime, then you should not be harrassed. It is RIDICULOUS that the government is trying to pass off this fucked-up bust of Kenny's boat as some sort of great victory in the war against the traffiking of women. Self-employed prostituion is quite clearly protected by Brazilian law and there is no need or right to repress it.

Folks at the conference were particularly distressed about the rumor that the woman who dropped the dime on Kenny got beat up. If anyone has any concrete info about that they'd like to share (again, please, no names or identifying characteristics - just the facts of the matter) it would be highly useful. If this rumor is true, then the police really stepped out of line: not only did they preform a useless bust which left Brazil with egg on its face solely - apparently - for propaganda purposes, but they also weren't able to protect the girl who was their informant.

Maia basically claimed at the end of his speach that the PF have the right to unilaterally yank anyone's visa at all, no matter if they've committed a crime or not. This is HIGHLY irregular and any lawyer down here will tell you that the PF don't have a constitutional leg to stand on when they assert this.

Fernando do Noronha is a really great place to visit. Especially if you are into diving. But as for mongering it is definetely a bring your own date scene. There are few people living there and they pretty much all know eachother, meaning the local girls are usually not available.

If staying in Sampa you would want to go to Congas (CGU) which is the domestic aeroporto and will run about R35 in a taxi from the center of town. The international (GRU) will run about R80 in a cab because it is quite a distant from town.

Likewise best to hit Santos dumont (SDU) the domestic aeroporto when entering Rio. It will run about R20 in a taxi to get you to Copacabana/ipanema. The international (GIG) will be about R40 now. When leaving the domestic airport just ignore the touts and hail a cab from the front. They will usually be dropping passengers and will save you maybe 1/3 off the fare. Be prepared for the plane to hit the breaks pretty rapidly when you touch down, not a very long runway........

Gol is a good airline with mostly brand new boeing planes. Varig and Tam use older planes but still not to bad.

The flights out of the domestic airports are cool because they are closer to your destination (Copa, Sp, etc). They also have more flights, but based on my experience they are definately more expensive. So if money is an issue stick with the international, but if convenience and time is an issue domestic is the way to go. Plus the domestic airports are a lot more better (shops, girls etc).

Do you have a cost for this, or a link for more info?Hi Jaimito,

Link for VARIG is - www.varig.com.br - and it usually opens on the domestic flights page, and today there you have a link on the right side of the page who says OFERTAS INTERNACIONAIS E PONTE AÉREA and when you click on this link you get a new window with this price offer between CONGONHAS-SP and SANTOS DUMONT-RJ for 289,00 Reais (seems to be 1way).

When you follow the other link PONTE AÉREA RJ/SP somewhere in the middle of the opening page, then you get another price who seems to be 385,00 + 9,08 + 11,55 Reais (do not see if this is 1way or 2way, although seems to me to be an offer for 2way, from monday to friday).

Actually when I tried to simulate a reservation for either of these offers, their online booking system was down so I could not progress.

3 Reais = aprox 1 Euro.

Hope this helps.

You can pay for Brasilian airlines with cash or Brasilian credit cards only. Even if you're at the airport.

If you're going to SP - Rio flight, don't waste your time. Gongonhas - Santos Dumont flights are like shuttle bus service, every 30 min there is 1 - 4 flights to chose from. Just go to the airport and pick next free flight.

In checking the prices for Gol, the flights from the smaller airports were much more expensive. 250R one way, compared to 99 or 119R for a mix or from GIG-GRU.

I've always found that the tickets are more expensive on a walk up basis, but have no experience in buying tickets within Brazil.

That is correct, I just booked a flight on GOL from GRU-GIG using my AMEX card. This is the only international card you can use to book via the internet. The cost was R140.10 (about $60) roundtrip, including taxes. Getting a ticket at the airport counter is easy, but you are rolling the dice in terms of price. GOL is basically the Southwest Airlines of Brazil, for all the good & bad that entails.

Jaimito Cartero

I was finally able to get the Gol site to take an AMEX card. They ask for the CCV number, which is usually the 3 digit code written on the signature line on the back. They were, however, looking for a 4 digit number. There is a 4 digit number on the front of the card, so I used that and it worked.

The pricing does go up though. Flights for more than a month out were now pricing at 40% higher than last week. They do have cheaper fares (99R one way) later at night. (9pm flight)

I'm flying CGH-GIG. The CGH flight to the smaller Rio airport was 249R one way!

Has anybody done a thorough job of comparing the big frequent flier programs to see which is the best for award travel to Brasil?

I will be doing a bit of international business travel and I would like to accumulate as much value to put towards Brasil trips as possible. I currently have United Mileage Plus membership and American Advantage membership.

The route I will travel most frequently for business lends itself to more United miles but I am frustrated with United's award program. They claim you can travel to Brasil on a saver award for 50K miles, but I don't believe they have a single seat available in that class. So if you want to redeem you have to fork over 80K for a anytime award on economy. I am also nervous that United will reduce the mileage value as part of their bankruptcy restructuring.

American seems to have a nice program where you can mix cash and miles - e.g. 30K miles and $200 cash to travel to South America zone 2, something like that. My current feeling is that American Adavantage is best, but unfortunately, my biz route may not allow me to accumulate there.

The other big programs is Delta/Virgin I suppose.

Any opinions?

Rovnak,

I have taken free flights to Rio, using FF miles, on Continental, United, and American. Continental is by far the most customer friendly. If the dates you request aren't available, they will tell you which dates close to the ones you asked for are available. I don't know of any other airline that does this. American would be second, although you have to fiddle around with the dates till you find what you want. United's customer service sucks. They provide no help finding available dates, and they have few free seats available.

I have a lot of miles accumulated on Delta, but they stopped flying to Rio a few years ago. Rumor has it that Delta flights to Rio will resume sometime this year, but I don't know when. Maybe they have already. Perhaps they have already. Delta miles can be used on Continental and Northwest, and vice versa.

This is what makes American a star in my book. If you can place some money here its worth its weight in gold.

Start Earning Miles With Guaranty Bank

Guaranty Bank makes earning American Airlines AAdvantage miles easy. With Guaranty's AirMiles Checking™ account, you can earn AAdvantage miles each month based on your average daily balance-one AAdvantage mile for every $10 of your average monthly balance. So, if your average monthly balance is $10,000, you will earn 1,000 miles for that month!

For a limited time, Guaranty Bank is giving you the opportunity to earn additional AAdvantage miles with your AirMiles Checking account. See how you can rack up miles by simply banking with Guaranty:
Open a new AirMiles account, and earn 2,000 bonus miles.
Earn another 1,000 miles for activating direct deposit into your account.
Refer a friend to Guaranty Bank, and earn an additional 1,000 miles when he/she opens a new AirMiles account.
You'll also earn interest with your AirMiles Checking account; and best of all, there's no minimum balance required to earn interest. Miles are credited to your American Airlines AAdvantage program account once a month. Visit the Guaranty Bank Web site for complete details.

The interest is extremely low and very much below market. It is terrible compared to the competitors for the highest interest rates (www.bankrate.com) from US based banks.

Make sure you weigh all this out. There is no real "free lunch" anymore.

Since the cat is out of the bag I will confirm what has been said about Continental.

I have always been able to get a free flight down there in the month I wanted. Of course, I have never tried during Christmas or Carnaval. Also, Continental seems to have more seats available in the 50,000 range than I have seem on other airlines. I know on other airlines they seem to never have the standard seats so you have to use extra miles to get to a free ticket (not worth it).

Continental/ Northwest will work with you, as was stated. Also, two years ago they gave me a free ticket, this was back when it was 35,000 on NW, when the website said none were available. So calling in and talking to them at Continental or NW makes things even better.

I have flown United and American to Rio but never again. Only on Continental do you get treated with respect.

Finally, yes, Delta will start direct flights via Atlanta to Rio on October 15, 2005!

And one last point about all of this:

I accrue miles flown on all Continenatal flights, all Northwest flights, and many Delta flights all on one NW Worldperks account. You can do the same with your Continental One PAss account. So, again, it is best to stick with NW/Continental.

I'd say that AA or the Continental/Delta/Northwest FF programs are the best for travel to SA. I'll be using a 35k coach award to SP/RIO (Fly into SP, leave from Rio) later this month that I booked earlier this year before they raised the award level to 50k.

If you have KLM, Delta, CO or NW miles, you should be able to book a 50k coach award. They will often not offer you awards with their partners, but if you ask they will look for you.

American also has a "Challenge" program that will allow you to make Gold or Platinum status with just one flight. (You can get the details on flyertalk.com).

Since Feb. 05 I have flown 6 roundtrips between MIA and S.P. GRU. Once on AA and all the other flights on TAM. I think TAM is much better regarding service onboard and their F.F.P. Fedelidade. I already had one free trip home (taxes were $70) from Brasil and have enough points for another free trip now one way. You earn points also flying domestic.

I am going again next week and will have enough points for a free roundtrip in September to return to be with my GF. I spoke with a Brasileira living in Chicago for 14 yrs last flight to MIA and she agrees TAM offers excellent service compared to AA. TAM checkin in MIA is rapid compared to AA's long lines.

I flew business cl. without extra charge last MIA-GRU 13 July. Finally, you can find lower prices on TAM from travel agents than AA fares.

Carnival and X-mas is out of the question on any airline.

Out of the question.

Call any and try.

Sundays are always open for FF miles to b used.

On DELTA and CONTINETAL, Sundays is te best time to go.

TAM is 3rd most flights flown to Brazil during the week and they are increasing 2 more flights per week after the 4th quarter (DEC).

Start investing with TAM .

I had that same idea about investing in TAM. Besides flying MIA-GRU with almost fully booked flights, (first 2 weeks of Aug. are sold out MIA-GRU) I noticed their domestic flights I travel on are full or almost full. How many US carriers have sold out domestic except the nofrills budget flyers.

BTW, The inflight magazine had an impressive TAM earnings chart the past 2-4 years.

Hello everyone,

I would like to get some advice/opinions from you all.

I am planning my first trip (by myself) to Rio in October 9-22. I have a 2 week vacation including the weekend before and after (total of 16 days). I currently have flights (reward travel) reserved on Delta (ORD-ATL-GIG-ATL-ORD). I have the option to do an open-jaw flight as well.

I am wondering if 2 weeks in Rio will be too long? I am considering doing one week in Rio and one week in Buenos Aires (fly into GIG and out of EZE, and somehow buy a one-way flight from GIG-EZE out of my own pocket).

I just think that mongering in the same place may get old. I enjoy food/some sightseeing/beach stuff while traveling (in addition to mongering), too, but does anyone have opinions on whether I should go to go to Buenos Aires or maybe another part of Brazil instead of just staying 2 weeks in Rio?

When I'm in Rio (esp since I may be there for 2 week), would having a cell phone be extremely helpful/necessary/worthwhile? I have an unlocked quad-band GSM phone, so I would have to just get a prepaid SIM. I am not concerned about people reaching my from work/home, the phone would be purely for personal/vacation uses. Does anyone have thought about this? Any comments on which company I should go with?

Thanks for any advice/comments.
Any fellow mongers want to meet up for a drink in Rio, PM me!

My opinions;

1. Two weeks in Rio is not enough. Get yourself established and have a blast. Running to BA is not necessary. I have spent time in both places and I believe there is no comparison with Rio/SP. I'm sure some will disagree, including Jackson!!

2. The phone is essential. Definitely get the SIM and get to work (needed for escorts and possible outside activities with girls who work somewhere). Use TIM or Claro. Some like Oi.

I am in the same situation as you are going to be except that I have three weeks in Rio. I have found little reason to leave for BA, including the young lady in my bed now who happened to request a sleep-over after our session together at a local termas. I have never been to BA but understand it is more by the hour and not as personal.

As for your phone, I initially thought I would do the same. However, the TIM store in the mall had trouble getting the SIM to work and now my SIM doesn't either (it did with Claro! upon arrival). It may have turned out for the best though, because my phone sells here for over R$2000 and I have heard of people having expensive phones stolen. You may want to do what I did which was buy a cheap Nokia phone at Claro! for R$150 and purchase minutes. Having the phone has been both good and bad. It is great when you see a really hot babe to hand her your phone and ask her to put in her name and number. It is bad when you are trying to avoid someone who has gotten overly attached.

Rio is a great place with many many options for fun. I have been here quite often and still find I only tap the surface (pun intended). You won't be bored after your visit, just exhausted.

Well, I think it is time for a wake-up call.

My preference is 2 fly the airlline that allows me to earn the most miles at the least cost and that right now is DELTA and TAM.

They have more flights to SP/RIO that ant other airline right now. And they will accomodate your Freq Flyer miles. No problem. You can use your miles more varied than on the other airlines.

I have invested in TAM and now I will use my last miles with United and switch to DELTA.

I do not care about the on flight thrills, I care more about being able to use my miles when I want.

Next yr TAM will probably be the leader going to SP/RIO.

TJYes. Card works as debit card, but it can be used in several countries. Actually its rather safe way to take money just about anywhere, because in some shops you can pay with Visa Electron. Its also handy when used as ATM card, you can get cash from your own account anywhere in the world in ATM's that accept Visa card. From safety point its a bit safer than Credit Card, because if you lose it or its stolen, it can't be used without your PIN unlike CC where you can sign. I use Visa Electron as "support" card. Mainly to withdraw cash from my account. Works in Rio. Best location to get cash is Hotel Meridien, 4th floor Banco do Brasil ATM. Inside and no chance that anyone sees how much you take.

I think speaking badly of ATMs is wrong. The reality is that ATMs are always consistent. By this I meant they give you the CURRENT exchange rate at all times. Yes, you may get a better rate AT TIMES from a cambio but you can not count on it. When the exchange rate was really good for Americans, say 4 to 1, you got less in the cambios, but you got the actual rate in the ATMs as always. Just because the cambios can give you a slightly better rate at the moment because of the weak US dollar does not mean ATMs are "fucking you" as someone noted, and many others are implying.

Well Doc, you see we are at WAR. We are in a war that we were lead to believe would take only a few months. Now we know the reality to be it will take a few years, which means our national debt is growing and our currency is falling throughout the world. The rest of the world is cheering, because as quiet as it kept, they hate US.

I remember sitting in an apartment in Copacabana in late March of 2003 watching CNN, seeing our Navy and all it's might raining down on Iraq. I was thinking, why are we there? I still don't know.

Brazil on the other hand has no such problem. Sure, their government has many problems, but their GNP has grown and their economy is streaming along like never before. Housing and oil prices in the US are at a record high with no end in sight. We are paying for our bad judgement.

Having said that, no one in the US really cares. I mean we all really should be at home with our American B***h wife and 2 kids. Right? I thank God I don't have those problems.

Contrary to what some others have attributed to the fall of the dollar, it has nothing to do with the war. In fact, the war and all that extra spending is propping up the dollar.

The reason it's going down is the same reason house prices have risen to these ridiculous levels. It's the low interest rate. Currencies are bought and sold the same as anything else. Hmm. I can can get dollars and get a 1% return or I can buy reals and get a 19% return. What should I do? Get reals you fool!!!! The law of supply and demand. More people want reals and less people want dollars. The real rises, the dollar falls. That's the real reason the dollar has fallen. Low interest rates. Notice how I said has. It been pretty stable compared to the Euro and the Yen in the last few months. The reasons? Rising interest rates in the US and falling interest rates in Europe. When our interest rates get back to the 8-10% level you'll see the euro trading 1-1 with the dollar again and most likely a dollar will buy 3 reals again.

Now the fallen dollar is just half the problem. What's with the rampant inflation in Brazil? Which leads me to ask my question again. Last year 4x4 was about 135 reals done deal. How much is it this year? Should I abort and go to German FKKs instead?

As the rest of the world hating the US. I've travelled pretty much all over this globe and that's just not true. Most people love America. They want to be "Americans". Not live here but live like us. In fact the world has become so American these last 20 years that it's kind of sad. It's becoming bland. What they hate is not America or Americans, they hate the American government. Sadly in that, they aren't alone. Even within America. We live in a devisive time.

JustGotBack & RonnyRon are both right:

RonnyRon touches on the war (balloning deficits)
JustGotBack touches on the i-rates, which induce foreign investment.

When you have high interest rates private investors andforeign banks invest in your country considering you have sound banking system (Tansparency).

But what happens is you start to get all this investment coming into your country and now the Brazil Central Banks has a shit load of foreign currecy which it converts into its own currency (REAL).

Now the Central Bank passes out the money to the private and state banks such as:

Banco do Brasil
Banco 1
Banco BNL do Brasil
Banco Bradesco (Bradesco Bank)
Banco Icatu
Banco Real

And they manage this money.
Now these smaller mentioned above has to make more interest on the money than what the foreigners are lening them.

In July the interest rate was 19% on 1 real. So if I'm a shop owner I can't pay a fifth of my bottom line profit in the form of interest. I would be forever in poverty.
But because so many investors were buying real for the 19% return, the coffeur swelled and they was so much money circulating in Brazil that the currency appreciated.
But when money appreciates so you higher prices and thereofore inflation, and the Central Bank of Brazil wanted to tame inflation.
So they reduced they paid down its decifit on its borrowed money with stronger (REAL) and reduced the interest rate to reduce inflation. Just like your credit card, you pay down your principle so that you have lower interest applied the following month.

Bush's cabinet team also wants a weaker dollar so that American company's can export their products cheaper. So now the stronger Brazilian REAL can now buy the American made product. ( Its now takes less REAL to buy the DOLLAR). Brazilian companies now can buy a Caterpillar Bulldozer with less REAIS.

For Bush the American companies such as Caterpillar can now sell more products, therefore hire more American workers to build more products to sell.

So there you have that how exchange rates move. Of course there are more indepth variables involved but, you have what you need here to understand it.

Both JUSTGOTBACK & RONNYRON are right, I just added a detailed explanation to why they are right.

As you see more curruption develope around LULA and his cabinet you will see investors dumping REAL. Which mean the REAL will go south my amigo.

Doc, enjoy Brazil. It's not as cheap for vacation as it once was, but there's no place quite like it!

To get to Ipanema you can either walk out front to the kerbside and take a yellow taxi. Or you can take a registered cab at the booth (they will call out at you as you pass through the arrival gate).

Personally I take the bus or the yellow cabs but other people prefer the registered cabs (which are about half as expensive again). You be the judge. I am guessing a metered cab to Ipanema should run you about 45 reais or maybe 50.

There are ATMs in both terminals at the airport. On the middle or top floor, I forget which. "Piso comercial" is the floor you want. The ATMs are right at the end of the terminal. You might need to try a few different ones 'til you find one that works with your gringo card.

If I am well rested after landing and if it is sitting there always take the Chartered Bus. In March it was $R6. And the guy let me out at Botafogo which was where my apartment was. I had to hop across 4 lanes of non stop traffic. I mean there was not stop light in sight and those cars were zooming.

Take the bus if your not in a rush or exhausted after your flight.

That was whenI was last there. I got r$135 due to the early bird discount. It pays to show up early.

Oh well, at least the Real is dropping like a rock since the scandals broke. It's over 2.4 to the dollar now.

This might be dated, but it was r$170 for 40 minutes or so back in October of last year.

$R135 is a deal, are you sure. Did you show up as soon as they opened the doors. Damn

Yes I did. You know how they hand out those little numbers when you walk in. I was generally under 20. Once I was like 7 or so. 4x4 had an early bird special. Take a girl before 5pm I think and they waved the entrance or some such.

Does anyone know if they still have the early bird special? Has anyone been to Rio in the last year?

There seems to be some confusion on the prices, so let me clear it up. The price for 40 min (as of yesterday afternoon lol) in the regular cabine is R150, for one hour is R170, and for one hour in the regular suite is R220. They have other suites that are bigger with more time, but I'm not sure how much more they are. And if you come before 5 pm, they do waive the entrance fee, which I think is R30, but I'm not sure since I've never arrived before 5 pm lol.

If you get a girl before 5pm they waive the entrance charge, the special have been going for at least a couple of years and was good as of early July.

They still have the special.

An hour in the cabine is R$170. The 40 minute session is R$150 or so. You don't pay the R$30 entrance free if you session before 5pm.
