...I rec. carrying a passport. It is easy enough to replace.
Thanks God, I don't have experience with this! But how do you "easily" replace a document when your next embassy is 2000 km away and there isn't even a consulate in town?? How do you pass security at the airport without a personal document once you want to get to your embassy??
So if it is hit or miss anyway, I'd try the copy first. Loose it and you still have your official document :-)

Yes, I understand your points. Certainly, those risks and/or worries mentioned can be incurred at any time, when travelling abroad. However, I prefer to have a passport to show, should asked by the authorites. And, I'm certain that you are aware that several of our forum brothers have been taken-in with notarized copies...in Fortaleza.
I rec. a passport plastic cover if you are concerned about water damage. Most travel shops sell the item. Purchased mine for a few bucks at the local AAA.

It is the "miss" that I'm concerened about....for myself, and fellow bro's of this forum. There is nothing more "official" than a valid passport from your country, with an actual visa. A b/w or color copy of your passport with a cartorio stamp, simply, does not compare. And considering this is a leading country of fraud, it can give an excuse for a PM or PC to question its validity and/or argue such. In any case, should such occur, it usually leads to a bribe, extortion, and/or worse. I will not give them that oppurtunity.
Trust me, those notaries at the cartorio will notorize anything....with enough money. My experiences come from buying and/or renting property, AND in this process, included notorizing my passport. So, yes, I am all too familiar with the cartorios.
Also, I'm sure most of you have done your homework on Forta. As you know, there are many persons over-staying their visas. And the police are aware of such. In fact, taking in those that are suspect w/notorized copies... So, if you wish to battle on the front-lines with a back-up copy instead of an original, so be it.
Even though your example is going off on a tangent, I will entertain you. Veteran travellers lose their passports, monies, etc...true. And in your example, that would be a FUCKED situation. However, does this person have no means of contacting anyone or anybody, and have no monies? I'm certain that this person likely prepared him/her-self before travelling to this BFE destination. If not, he/she is an idiot...period.
Although I do not wish to cover in great detail on how to prepare for a stranded situation, here are some basic fundamentals before travelling: 1.) Register with embassy, 2.) Emergency numbers, and 3.) Language basics. Of course, not neccessarily in this order.
As stated earlier, I do have notarized copies of my passport.
Some have been given to close Brasilian friends in case of emergency and legal purposes, if needed. Also, in my travels, I have stuffed them in my suitcases, bags, etc. However, none go with me to the front-lines of mongering...I bring my passport.

I scanned my passport, credit cards, drivers liscense, birth cirtificate and some other info and e-mailed it to myself on yahoo. The files can be downloaded and viewed from anywhere including your embassy or consulate if need be.
My guess is that if the cops are honest, the nororized copy including the entry visa and your hotel key fob may do it.
If the cops are dishonest, grabbing your passport and holding it for ransom would suck.

Convenience is subjective. My US Passport is thin, and slightly bigger than an avg. billfold. I usually carry it in a hidden pocket of my shorts or pants, and no other items are in the same compartment.
I do not worry about losing my passport, no more than losing my wallet, keys, etc. Certainly, there are corrupt cops which request a gratuity irregardless of what papers presented, however, it happens. When such occurs, I usually state names of persons whom I personally know in the PM or PC. Most times, I say, "Tudo bem, we will resolve this RIGHT NOW, let me call Colonel XXXXXX. And he will not be happy about calling so late."
Yeah, around this time, several years ago, the policia had a blitz going at Help. They went in, separated the guys from the girls, and started checking documents. Pulling gringos out with notarized copies and without any ID for further questioning. Guys with PASSPORTS were OK. OGlobo was there too. Same year Fiscal(in front of Othon) got arrested....BTW, I was with him when it happened....insane shit!@

Definately, ransom does suck. If the cops are dishonest, NO documents would satisfy them. Again, my argument; more efficient and productive to show a passport vs. notarized copy under normal conditions of an id check.
That is, making the cops job easier. Lowering your contact and/or interaction time with cop.

In Brazil the Police asked me for ID maybe twice the last 15 years (except at the airport). I never really had any bad encounters with the police (I never mess with drugs or minors).

I took 4 days out of my Rio trip to check out Fortaleza, first hand.
I got in friday night. Stayed at Hotel Ponta Mar. Towards the end of Iracema beach. I found out the hard way, that they are NOT girl friendly. In fact, I spent a number of hours the next day finding out that there are NO hotels along the beach that are.
This is a very nice place. Good vibe, a number of universities, great food. But it is a vacation destination for brazilians. They keep the GDP activities pretty unseen in the area of the hotels.
Funny thing, I ran into a couple gauchas sipping out a Matte goard ( I forget what they call it in brazil , but it isn´t matte). One totally flipped a switch for me. I’ve just completed a 2-week sexpedition in NE Brazil, where I’ve researched the holy sites of Natal and Fortaleza.

After spending a few days in Natal I started to get used to the warm climate, the new time zone and, most importantly, the new pussy zone.

Anyway, I knew I wasn’t going to be mugged in Ground Zero. I felt safe. They also check passports from time to time, but that’s a small price to pay for the security they provide.
I checked first the pussy flows in the infamous corner in the centre of Ground Zero, then I checked out the club Bikini, where there was nothing of interest, in fact there were some really ugly and old girls in there, so I moved on to Café del Mar.
Café del Mar deserved a more careful analysis as there were loads of girls, the lighting was good and the girls moved around all the time so you could evaluate most of them by staying in your strategic position, and launch an attack when necessary, without wasting too much energy walking around.

I got off the taxi, the anti-riot police were still around, in case there was a riot against mongers, I guess. The pussy flows were intense in all directions.
I got into Forro Mambo, where there was a 20 R$ cover charge. Over the following days it was business as usual: I used to hit the beach at about 3-4 pm each day, usually Coco Beach in Praia de Futuro, where there was always some action, then at night I hit the clubs and partied till after dawn.
Just a quick update on the current clubs:
Forro Mambo: as described above, the club to end up each day after 3-4 am, expensive drinks and cover charge, many hookers around but hostile lighting and music volume conditions. The Forro area is actually better for hunting, but you will have to put up with listening to Forro. Apart from the Sweetie I picked up a skinny girl another day, nothing special but she had a top GFE attitude and was very skilled.
Café del Mar: 15 R$ cover charge, dark on the ground floor but good lighting on the first floor, where the terrace is. This is IMO the best club for hunting in Ground Zero.
Europa: no cover charge, you can check the stock from the street most days as it is usually half empty, so there isn’t even need to get in if nothing interesting is in there.
Bikini: located above Europa, no cover charge, usually ugly girls only, though there might be a gem hidden now and then.
Zippy Bar: no cover charge, usually busy, some girls hanging out at the door on the street too. It’s worth checking out on your routine comb of the area.
Swing Club: the place to go after Mambo dies if you still have some energy left, I actually never got into it, I was going to check it out once but picked up one girl on the way and headed for my hotel, so I missed it. It’s your last option to pick up something as it’s open till 9 am.
All the above clubs are in Ground Zero, very close to each other, maximum 5 min walk, and are frequented exclusively by hookers, mongers and the police.
Then there are other clubs I checked out in which you can find some other types of human beings, such as non-pros. They are as follows:
Armazen: 5-10 min walk from Ground Zero, mostly pros and semi-pros but there are also a handful of non-pros thrown in. Open on Wed and Sat. Cover charge of about 10-20 R$ depending on the night. Cheap drinks.
Orbita: next to Armazen, mostly non-pros but there are sometimes a few semi-pros too. Cover charge of about 10-20 R$ and cheap drinks. Open from Thu to Sun.
Pirata: in Ground Zero, open on Mon (strong night), cover charge of 30 R$, mostly non-pros and middle-class Brazilians of all ages, but a few pros and semi-pros in the crowd too. It isn’t worth the time (nor the money) anyway, IMO.
Lounge Beach: a barraca in Praia do Futuro, a 20 R$ taxi ride from Iracema, great on Thu with a mixed crowd of pros, semi-pros and non-pros and excellent House music. Cover charge of 20 R$. If you like House music you will love this place, otherwise it hasn’t got much to offer in terms of mongering opportunities as the pros that you will see here are those that you will see every night in other places within the pros’ circles, no new faces.
Siqueira Club: half an hour taxi ride from Iracema. I had heard good things about this club but I went on Sun and it was closed, apparently it’s been closed for good recently, so forget about this place.
The action in all these places start late, from 10 pm onwards, if you go at midnight even better.
For daytime action, Coco beach in Praia de Futuro, as mentioned before, is a good option. I picked up one girl in Coco beach one day, who happened to be a hardcore, but she was OK to get some release after an afternoon on the beach watching all those hot bundas.

Fortunately, when I left Fortaleza I still had a few days to spend in Natal before flying back home.
Natal was a good decompression chamber before boarding the plane, a good place to chill out and contemplate for the last time the blue ocean.

That’s right, the Casa Blanca doesn’t charge for guests but it does charge a hefty fee if you want to take 2 girls at once, they said 85 R$ for the second girl, so going to a motel was cheaper.

Try to rent a "flat". That is an apartment in an apart hotel.
If you book through an agency you get almost half the official hotel rate.
That is because those apartments are privately owned and you still get the daily hotel service.

I went to one place called Scalibu or Escalibu or something like that (kinda sounds like Excalibur in English), near Praia do Futuro. The best way to describe the place was it was like a ranch, no roof, pool in the middle, strange place IMHO, like being in a barn on a farm! I went in the afternoon so there were no women present at the time, but the prices were something like R20 for 30 min or R40 for 1 hr I believe. Before fellow experienced mongers start complaining I will cut to the chase and share my own experiences in dreamland. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that I will break this report in two parts in order to make it more reader friendly. Also the fact and situations stated here happened a while ago (2003 /2004) and not necessarily a few days ago. I hope this won't be a problem.
Destination: Fortaleza, aka Fortal
Who: Rodrigo Santoro (RS), Glen Medeiros (GM) and Black Spot (BS)
When: July 9th to July 16 th 2003.
After seeing our first attempt to hit "mother land" a year before blown off because RS pulled out at the last minute (he was grounded by his regular after a lascivious holiday trip to Mikonos - Greece), we were looking forward to this one.
The charter flight was not bad but that stop in Las Palmas made it longer and the little pervert inside us was becoming bigger and bigger to the point that RS and me were given the bad eye by the Dutch hostess, because we were. Let's say, complimenting her "goodies"? .
We finally arrived in Fortal and head straight up to the hotel - Golden Tulip Iate Plaza - Av. Beira Mar, 4753 - www.iateplazahotel.com. Br. We were happy because it was a brand new hotel and the rooms were big with an absolutely amazing view, facing the beach and the hotel's swimming pool. At that time we were kids in this kind of transoceanic mongering and we didn't know about the FORUM, so we went there completely blind folded. But me & GM speaking fluently Portuguese would definitely help us out during this "pussy quest".
RS was comfortable with that also, he didn't speak a word of Portuguese but his looks are the ultimate translator all over the world.
In a rush to get things arranged prior to declare hunt season open, I decided to chat up the bell boy and the guys at the reception. We arrived in Pirata and it start raining, FORTAL mongers know what this means, specially if you take in consideration that it's an open air kinda club. By the way this is south America, everything is kinda something, eh, eh, . The forro (northeast brazilian dance)show had to be postponed and all the people gather under the improvised zinc roof until it stopped.
There were not a lot of women in Pirata and the few (good ones) were not approachable or were with someone. GM hooked up with a nice mulata and started dancing with her, after 10m he couldn't stand still anymore, she had awaken the little man in him. RS & me went for some "love laps" but there was nothing there for us. We decided to wait and see how GM would go with the mulata and as soon as he told us that it was no do because she was a member of the staff and was not really an easy target, we left.
DESIGUAL, was just a few minutes away walking and it was another hell of a low life place, but hey once in Rome. We paid our entry fee (R20, if I well remember). Actually everything in FORTAL is peanuts from clubbing to food to tourism itself it's one of the big advantages of the Brazilian Northeast.
As soon as we stepped in a lot of garotas started following us and trying to pull us to the. Yeah you got it, kinda dance floor. We refused politely and order our drinks instead, but while we turn our back to the main room we were ass grabbed several times and chicks just wouldn't stop. All of a sudden we felt someone putting their arms around our waist. It was Cris and Carla! RS vanished straight away with Carla while I stayed with GM and Cris. A chick come to whisper something to GM, then he said he would like to have a word with me. I told Cris to grab a drink for us and talked to the guy. He then told me that he had just been approached by a GP who offered him a full night for R100.
Well the funny part is that so far we were not 100% sure these girls were GP's. Shame on us! Paulo, Recife, Salvador, Rio) because competition is ruthless in the major cities and like we say back home, in a blind's land a one eyed man is a king.

The guy was extremely helpful and told us to buy the local newspaper and browse through the different ads. We knew what we wanted something close to the hotel, with at least two bedrooms a shower room, clean and decent. We made a few phone calls and bingo! We had an appointment to see a place in - Avenida Aboliçao -. We met the landlord there and the place was just perfect so we settled a deal for R450 for 10 days. She wanted R5OO initially but it was low season and we convinced her to lower the price a little bit.

I was there for christmas and new year 4 years ago, and since the 3 times in low season.
This year I decided to go before christmas (18.-23.12) because the hotels are pretty much more expensive during new year (at least I couldn’t find a good one).
What’s going on: The place is full!!! Mainly Italians, Dutch, Germans, but ..Italians!!! Therefore the going rates are usually more exp. (BR 200 up for LT)
The good thing this time: There are many Brazilians tourist as well (some students and so are quiet easy to get).

Just one tip for you. Rent an apartment, that is much cheaper, and you also have more freedom than if you stay in a hotel.
I was in Fortaleza in November for a few days. It had been 2 years since I was last there. A reasonable number of Italian mongers were there and a fair number of garotas too, but I cannot say that I was impressed with the girls at all. I had forgotten how disappointing the scene there can be - and think that it has gone downhill a bit since I was last there. The typical Fortaleza garota is an ugly short round gal with a pot belly and very little of the famous Brazilian bunda. If used to the scene in Rio or S.P., one will be very disappointed in the quality available. However, as in the past, I was able to find some diamonds in the rough after a lot of searching - young gals just starting out in the hooking business - and before they have hit the big leagues in Rio and S.P. It just seemed to take me longer to find the diamonds in the rough than in the past.
I would estimate that 10% of the gals were attractive and another 5% of the gals were very attractive. In my short time there, I was able to land a couple of beauties - beautiful short thin hard bodied spinners that would easily go for double or triple the amount if you were in Rio or S.P. Here is a picture of one of them - 19 year old Diane, a rare blonde amongst the Fortaleza garotas. After she has made some money in Fortaleza, I imagine that she will head down south to the big leagues in Rio and S.P.

1. In Fortaleza there is a never-ending stream of Italian (and Dutch) mongers coming down to spend their holidays. So even if the prices are lower in Fortaleza she'll have much more customers.
2. If she's a beautiful girl she'll have less competition than in Rio.
3. In Fortaleza the boates are concentrated in a small area. The top-end girls will be "famous" in no-time.
What is "the big league" in Rio? Help? OK, the number of gringo-losers willing to pay overprice is higher in Copa.

LOL, great report and great description of the typical Fortaleza garota. But you forgot to mention about the shape of their heads! A lot of the Nordeste garotoas have football-shaped heads, very funny looking I think; but it can be cute too. Your girl doesn't look like she's from Ceará though, too good looking. It sounds like you hit the regular spots in Iracema, but just wondering if you (or anyone else here) have any info on the casa, or apartamento scene in Fortaleza where the locals primarily go? Also are all the discos open again? I had read that Kapital was closed down for a while earlier this year.
Kapital club is now called Forro Mambo. Other than the name change, it is exactly the same set up - large stage on the first floor with a band, electronic music upstairs in the smaller dark 2nd floor room. Cover charge of R20 each night, whether the place was jumping or dead. While I was there, all of the discos were open (Zippi bar, Europa club, Bikini bar, etc) and the gals did the regular nightly rotation between them.
The GDPs in Fortaleza were mostly ugly, short and round with a pot belly and very little of the famous Brazilian bunda. But like I said, there were a number of gems out there, if one was willing to dig a little. Was not able to hit the casa/apartmento scene, but would love to have. I know the well-heeled locals are not doing the typical GDP there.
You can check my Fortaleza postings from late 2004 (the last time I was there) for a couple more pics of the type of gems that can be found in Fortaleza, if you are willing to work a little.
I agree with Sperto - there are a lot of gorgeous gals in Fortaleza, they just not working as GDPs in the bars around Iracema. (Actually this could be said about any city in Brazil) As he suggests, check out Mucuripe Clube if you have game (speak some portuguese, can dance some forro, etc). On my flight out of Fortaleza, there were about 40 18-20 year old college gals on the plane, all heading off to Orlando to work at Disneyworld for two months and to learn more english on an exchange program. Virtually every single one was gorgeous - they could easily have been from Ipanema in Rio or Jardims in S.P. They made the typical Iracema GDP look pretty lacking. While chatting them up, they said that Mucuripe Clube was their favorite club.
As for GDPs moving on up from Fortaleza, I can only base my remarks on several beautiful garotas I have done in both S.P. and Rio - they started up north in their home towns, moved to Fortaleza for a bit, then moved to S.P. or Rio to make even more money - this is what they related to me - including one of my S.P. favs, originally from Rondonia.
Diane was not a Ceara gal, but from Sao Luis, and had gone to Fortaleza to make more money. This surprised me, as she is not a typical Sao Luis gal (heavy afro-brazilian population there), and I too had thought she was probably from the Natal/Recife area, until I heard her speak. She spoke with a very unusual accent - very fast and clipped - which I had some problems understanding. Maybe this is a Sao Luis accent - I do not know.
I would not write Fortaleza off, as the beaches are great, and if willing to dig a little, you can uncover gems at a third to a half of the price such a gal would cost in S.P. or Rio for TLN. You just have to work a lot harder for it.
The people from the north and northeast of Brazil often have very distinct features typical for the region or the state.
- Salvador: very strong black influence, mulatas, negras.
- Manaus: caboclo-look with some indian-blood
- Fortaleza: chubby, footballsheads, no necks
- Sao Luiz: not necessarily black, but often with very distinct cheekbones
- Belém: distinct checkbones and puffy lips made for kissing
- Recife: chubby, worn out Sertão-look, often plain ugly
It's fun, and quite easy, to guess where the girls come from. Of course you can also hear it on their accent.
Personally I'm very fond of the faces of the girls in Belém and Pará. The bodies of the bahianas. The attitude of the girls in Manaus. The horniness of the girls in Fortaleza. The girls in Recife... hmm, they might have nice cousins in Salvador.

Go to Canoa. Try to stay over a weekend. It´s a mission impossible going there without getting laid.
I just came back from Canoa and it was my third time. I have there some friends and they told me that if they see foreigners with to young girls you can have big problems with the residents there.
Besides this it is not one monger destination. If you just go there with a "girlfriend" from Fortaleza you will have no problems with the pousada's.
La Dolce Vita is nice and payable. Outside the season $R 85,- per night.

I believe the beach he is referring to is Praia de Futuro. The nightlife he is talking about is Praia Iracema.
Why should you need to rent a car/motorbike. Use a taxi to get where you want to, it is not going to be more expensive than renting a car anyway. Anyway, you are probably going to drink when you are going out anyway :-)

I have been to Fortaleza about 6 times, always with my GF so never have been looking for anything.
We arrived one night at about 3am and got to the hotel about 4am and we were hungry so went out to one of the street hotdog guys (right in the night spot area in Praia Iracema). We sat there and my GF talked to the 12-14 year old girls sitting there. They were looking for action but had not found any yet. This was very sad to me that they were so young and out there let alone at 4am.
Anyone thinking of going there for young girls, the Favelas are about 2 blocks away and will spot you taking a young girls and you are probably a target from then on, let alone the police seeing you and putting you in jail.
As Fortaleza has some problems with sextourism the Police occasionally check ID on gringos.

If you would be checked by Polícia Federal only your passport will serve. No copies will do. If they are in a good mood they might follow you to your hotel to see your passport (and maybe some cash). If you don´t carry your passport they have the right to give you a multa/fine of R$ 800.

I was at the Praia do Futuro in October and was controlled by the police. (don't know what kind of police it was).
They took me and a californian guy and a portuguese (he had no ID). We both had not autzorized copies of our passports.
This was not enough.

The we got a stamp into the passport.
So, when we want to leave at the airport, they see that I did not pay.
I have to pay at the banco do brasil and present the paper to the officer at the airport, then I can leave the country.
That simple.

Sorry it took me so long but I'm going to start with this place.
The location:
Rua Vicente Leite 2020.
This place is a great option for all the mongers in this city.
You will find a team of 15-30 girls sometimes more or less and I think they open early like 6 P.M. or something.
Didn't really test any girl since I was just looking around but what I saw was good.
The best thing about it, the price 70 reais and trust me for the quality is quite a bargain.

I have been reading these posts since 2003. I keep reading how the Fortaleza girls, including the girls in Iracema, are short and fat and ugly. I visited Fortaleza twice, in 11/03 and 11/05. Rio has the edge in girls. One of the reasons is there are so many more girls. Also many of the girls in the top Rio termas are knockouts. But there are still many good looking girls in Fortaleza. There are similar looks as in Rio, with a lot of tanned girls with dyed blond hair, but it looks good on them. Of course, if you only like light skinned natural blondes, then the northeast is not for you. Rio doesn't have many of them either. But many of the "programa" girls in Rio look like that, since many come from the northeast. When I went in '03 and '05 programa girls in Fortaleza were probably a little more than half the price compared to Rio. An all niter in Rio was usually too expensive, but not in Fortaleza, at least the two times I went.
As I've said, I have been to Fortaleza twice, about a total of 3 weeks. I have never met a male tourist there who said the girls there were bad looking. Anyone who said that would have been laughed at. The subject never even came up! But then I read these posts and I am amazed.
I am not saying that Fortaleza is overflowing with knockouts. Don't expect playboy bunnies all over the place. I am just saying that there are many good lookers there, expecially in Iracema. You will also see some good ones on the beach at Praia de Futuro. When you go there you will not hear tourists complaining about how ugly all the girls are. That is only on this forum.
I have heard there has been a big crackdown since I was there last in November 2005. So I cannot attest to the quality now. All I know is this forum was knocking Fortaleza girls all the time in 2003 and 2005 when I visited, as they are knocking them now. What they wrote at the time should be taken with a grain of salt.

i was there last week and some of the discos in the iracima area were closed.. i think they are cracking down on ****.. there were several bars with some older gdps sitting in them.. but i was with gf. so no direct experience.

But I have been told its a very dangrous place, with favelas close to it.
The guy told me its ok to walk outside in the day, but to stay inside when the sun has past.
Is he correct, or is it down to common sense. Etc not wearing gold watches etc etc.
I would really apriciate if someone could tell me a little about this place.

The apartment building I have been looking at, is 18 years old, its located maybe 350m from the ocean (1block). So it may need some work, but im not certain.

my info is dated. i was last in p.f. / fortaleza in 2002. when i was there, p.f. was far from the city. you had to take a bus or taxi to get there otherwise walking would over an hour. i saw very little residencial housing in the area of p.f. and even fewer hotels. it seemed to be a place where the locals went during the day to have fun and that's it. when i was there there was a huge stage on the beach where bands had played or were playing at night. part of some special festival i think.
i did not get a sense that crime was a big problem in fortaleza or p.f. the biggest problem i saw was **** prostitition. but i suspect the p.f. area is deserted at night and that is usually somewhere you don't want to be.

Anyplace in the Northeast on the beach would be a good buy. In 2004 and 2005 when the dollar was still had some value, I saw TONS of condos being built in Natal, Recife, and Salvador. There is serious gentrification going on near the beaches. Several low cost hotels I used to stay at have been torn down or re-conditioned into high-end hotels. The locals told me that foreign money was responsible.
Now the dollar is low so it is not US investors building these condos, but the euro is still high and has a very good exchange rate with the real AND no tourist visas are required for European Union travellers. European investors are spurring the building craze for beach front condos.

I agree with George, the Northeast would be a great place for an investment property. I was last in the NE in 2005, and the amount of development that was going on was amazing. But why Praia do Futuro? Just out of curiosity, are you going to buy this building specifically to use as income property, or will you be living there as well? I would think the Iracema area would be a better place for rental property, since that's where more of the tourism is, although it might not be as safe as Futuro.

I was just there. Seems to be more condo construction near Beach Park than in the city. And Cumbuco.. The construction around BP had a lot of activity, workers. Cumbuco I did not see any workers, so not sure if the construciton is active.
I really like Fortaleza would be a good place to get a place, rent and stay there part of the year as well.
I think I'd also stay away from Praia do Futuro in terms of buying an appartment. In my opinion it's a place to go but also to leave after. The beach is nice, the barracas are great during daytime and some have parties at night (Barraca Caranguejo I think...).
But the area behind the beach is no place you would like to stay for any longer. There is just nothing to do or to have fun :-(
So my guess would be to settle in downtown Fortaleza, let's say Mucuripe, Meireles or Iracema (closest to the action!). If you speak some Portuguese, don't forget in Centro you will also find lots of GDP serving the local market. I got a nice session for about 20 R$.

Again, forget buying an apartment in Praia do Futuro. The Maresia and the very high salinity brought by the strong winds in PF will make the metal in the building to corrode and destroy your electric equipment etc.
The corrosion level in PF is supposed to be the second highest in the world.
PF is deserted at night, except for the barracas with parties, and isn't to be considered safe at night-time. Pivetes from the two nearby favelas, Favela dos Cocos e a Favela Vitória, roam around looking for victims.
The days when you could take a girl at Chico de Carangueijo, on a Thursday night, and make it out on the beach safely is gone. :(

as i, from my view from the other side of the eart, it seems to me that fortaleza has become more and more violent lately. i try to read about whats going on in the city, and today i came across an article about this issue.
according to the diaro do nordeste, there have been an increase of homicides in fortaleza this year. the first 120 days of 2007 307 persons have been murdered, in 2006 same days there was 263 cases.this is up 16,7%.
"the crimes have different motivations, but, the majority, is practised by account of interpersonal disagreements, generated in places or points of diversion and alcoholic beverage ingestion and other drugs, as bars, churrascarias, exits of clubs and also in fuel ranks.
fight of gangs, personal serrlements of accounts for debt of drugs, revenge and banal quarrels are the generating greaters of the homicides. other motivations are: crimes of order (pistolagens), passionals and confrontations of outlaws with the police forces." - diaro do nordeste.
however there has been a fall in the statistics of other crimes, like thieveries, robbery, and [CodeWord123] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord123). there are districts as is more violent than other, among them are mentioned praia do futuro.

over the years, i have from my brazilian friends (mostly from the upper middle class), been told; "do this and do that, dont go there and never in night and so on," and i have laughted inside me, thinking how afraid these people must be to live in their own country. well, it could be time to rethink.

I found some old photos from my first meeting with Fortaleza and Brazil. This goes back to 2003. These photos was shot by my old camera, and was not of hight quility, too dark. I have tried to lighten them in Photoshop, here are the results:
1. My first night in Fortaleza and Brazil, of the plane, have a shower, and directly to the Europa Bar, I had done my homework at this forum, I perfectly know where to go ;-) I bump into these two, claimed to be sisters, i dont know. My first experience with two girls, after a long marriage ;-) R$ 50 pr. girl, one Night.
2. A pretty blond girl, (18), with very nice attitude. R$ 50 TLN.
3-5. A cute dark girl (18), girlfriend style. I both liked her and disliked her attitude. She was the type of girl whom You are supposed to hunt for, or be hunted by her. Strange. Finally we ended up in bed, but it was not so great.

I came there alone, and the telephone soon was ringing, hehe. It was strange, but really funny. Well, i hang out some days with Vanessa. I met her daughter, a little one year old cutie, as she of course was very proud over, and also her older sister, as then was not in the business, but was very friendly. She was babysitting the child, and was sometimes driving us, since she had a car.
It is people like them, who struggle to have a good life, and a future for them and their kids. At the same time wonderful girls, down to earth, friendly, normal and nice, this really steal my heart, to this country. Someone here agree with me?

I met this girl in the last evening of my August holiday in 2006. I think it was quite early evening, at Zippy or maybe Bikini Bar. Allthought she looks a little scary to me, (I prefer normally not so dark girls), she turn out to be "a found".
She was very co-operative in all terms, and had a really, really girlfriend-like attitude. I enjoyed the Night with her, she was hot and clever with me, and we slept long in the morninghours, and had a late breakfast together in my house. As this was my last day, I had to drive her from my home in Aquiraz, to hers, in Fortaleza, in my rental car.
Even she knew i was travelling to Europe this very evening, she behaved like any teenage girl does with her boyfriend, holding my hand, kissing and fomling, she was very cosy, til I had to drop her of in some Rua in Centro.
Ohhh ... its always so hard to travel from Fortaleza and Brasil.

Well, its about 20-25 minutes to drive from Porto das Dunas (Beach Park) in the Aquiraz community to Beira Mar, depending on the traffic. I have heard rumours that the road from Fortaleza - Praia do Futuro in direction Beach Park shall be buildt, with some new brigdes. Someone know about this is correct? I will check this out in July. In this case, they told me, the travel will be much shorter, and the travel will be very nice as well, along the sea.
Sometimes, when I have things to do in Fortaleza the day after party, I rent a hotelroom, they can be had for 60 -70 R$ with carpark and breakfast. Then I go to the praia, tanning, drinking beer, and eat. Later I find a girl and take her to the hotel in Praia Iracema.
But its also nice to take a cute girl to the house, have a (nude) night swim together in the swimming pool, and play hot brasilian funk and norwegian sweet songs, loud very loud ;-) Then the day after, maybe take the girl to the praia at Beach Park, to chill down, a few meters down the road.
So one can say there is many things to choose from ;-)

I was planning to visit Fortaleza during my last trip to Brasil but at the last moment, I got stuck in Rio (if you know what I mean. :D ). I will definitely spend some quality time in Fortaleza as I have heard raves about it by both you folks in here and Brasilian friends in Brasil and where I live.
What are some good not too expensive girl friendly hotels near the beach in Fortaleza? (LOL, this sounds like the million $ question, but I had to ask it and as I'm sure many others are wondering the same, so anyone in the knwo, please shoot. :) ).
Unfortunately my experience dates back to 2005, but then I was staying in Hotel Casa Blanca (http://www.casablancahoteis.com.br/portugues/principal.php). Just booked a double room, and no hazzles at all. The staff was friendly to me and to my girl.

I agree with You Pyjama, the staff is friendly, and You have no problem with girls. Standard rate is R$ 80. if You enter with more than one girl, You must pay an extra fee, I think it was R$ 20. The downside with this hiotel is the incredible amount of "flowerspray" the cleaning personel are using in the rooms, it smells terrible.
On the other side of the street there is also a hotel, I dont remember the name. Its girlfriendly, no extra costs. The staff is very friendly. The rack rate is R$89, but it can be had for R$60, if You ask. It has a little swimming pool on the roof. OK breakfast, and are much used by groups of sweet students from outside Fortaleza.
In direction Beira Mar, up the street Rua Barão de Aracati, with the Holiday Inn, there is a nice, hotel of several low buildings called Colonial Praia. It has very good breakfast, and have a cosy and nice green garden and terrace with a quite large swimming pool, its like a pousada style, in the middle of the city. If You travel alone, its a perfect place, the staff is very friendly. There is a bar and they have a restaurant. You pay R$80 - 100, depending on the room. No problems to bring a girl to the room, no extra. But the hotel are mostly used of brazilians - families on holiday, so its not a partyplace for a group of men.
In the end of this street, away from the sea, there is a Scandinavian restaurant, with a sweet and friendly staff, serving You Norwegian "Kjottkaker" and Swedish "Smorgaasbord" :-)

Speaking of memories, here are some from July 2004. It was my first night in Fortaleza this holiday, still 'jetlagged' and I was taking it easy. I headet for Praia Iracema. It was still early, and I sit down at the little partly outdoor bar, just few steps before Europa, to have a beer.
Three brasilien men was drinking at the neightbour table, one quite "white" young (25 yo.?), and two dark, some years older than the other. We started talking, the young one was from SP, and was a student in Fortaleza. After a while two young girls they knew from before joined us, and we was drinking beer and talking all together.
Well, the hours fleew, and it was time to move, and the young boy proposed we should go to his flat for a nachtspiel. At this time everybody had been drinking, (a lot), but he insisted to drive with his car, a little Gol. Right before we was entering the car, The Lord himself opened the sky, and sent a crazy amount of soft, warm water on us, and we became wet to the skin :-)
Thinking on this today, wow how crazy I was joining them. And sit in a car - drunkdrived car. But one of the girls was so sweet with me, and I was very drunk. I remember the window vipers didnt function, and we could almost see nothing when we driving in direction of Aldeota. I remember a huge, dark building, and I entered this, without thinking on safety.
It show up that this was an abandoned house, as should be totally renovated and the oldest dark man (40?) was a caretaker of this at least ten floor emty building.
Well not quite emty, since he was renting an appartement for his friend, the young student, and had one himself. We entered the appartment of the student, and it was very poor furnitured, 2-3 chairs, a table and a ringlet as he used for sleeping. The two dark men was going to make food, the student and one of the girls was starting to dance slow and kiss.
"My" girl and I was going to the bathroom to try to dry up, and soon we was kissing, fomling and finally having sex. I remember liftning her up on the granite sink and f*ck her standing :-) It was great, I was a teenager again, even I had more than twice her age ;-) She wasnt that super looking, she was more the typical cearence, but hey, for me the whole situation was an adventure.
After the food was servet, easy, it was salad, warm rice and some bread. When we felt sleepy, the old caretaker found an emty appartement two floor down, and gave us an a blanket and a ringlet, and the girl and I was soon sleeping there together.
Following morning, all of us was driving to down town, and they drove me to Colonial Praia Hotel, just in time for breakfast. There was no moneytalk ... this time.
This girl; of course she was a GdP, in the start of her carriere. I met her again, bringing her to the hotel now and then. But the first night was the best and most special, like a thing I normally dont do at home :-)

hi guys, i can describe internet situation in hotel casa blanca: in the hall there 3 pc with fast internet for guests, without charge ; last year we had to pay 2r$ p/hour (in lanhouse the price was 1 r$ p/h).
in the rooms there is a connection (see the photo, even if the best reason of the photo is other...), but i did'nt try it. you can phone to the hotel's stuff, they normally speak a very good english.
many hotels are girl friendly in praia de iracema: hotel casa blanca, hotel americas( it's in front of casablanca, with little swimming pool), casa de praia (it's very near to casa blanca), that are in rua joaquim alves, near beira mar, but far from praia do futuro (taxy 20 r$ or more for barracas atlantis and coco beach). there are other in rua barroso : hotel raio de sol, hotel portal de praia , less comfortables, hotel praia de iracema (terrible choice. don't go there), many flats (that are not much expensive), like tabajaras.
there are too not girl friendly, like maredomus hotel, and generally the hotels high-level (4 stars): othon, iate, comfort, etc, so you have to go to a motel (motel village for exemple, in praia de iracema).

I spent a week in Fortaleza in June of 2006.
Nightlife in Iracema remains busy, with several bars and nightclubs. The best place seems to be a club called Armazem, every Wednesday night; the place gets packed, with three or four different spaces (forro, techno, etc). As far as I could see, most of the girls are pro or semi-pro. Be very careful with the bill, though (actually, only the house keeps control on the orders; very easy for them to charge a few extra beers).
If you feel alone in the afternoon, ask any taxi driver to take you to Belissima. It's a house with 20 or 30 girls, you can take them to one of the in-house rooms or to your hotel; in-house service was about R$ 70. Nobody speaks English, but they will know what you are looking for.

The best way to get there is flying, unless you enjoy a 48 hour busride. Flying will propably be cheaper.
P.s I've done the busride 5 times (in the old days when flying was expensive). This busride is actually very scenic and interesting. You get to see interesting landscape in this huge country.
With the month of the vacations, July, Ceará and Fortaleza police launch the operation "Alive Vacation". The operation have 2300 civil, military police and firemen mobilized in a special project for the security of the tourists. The operation suffer some modifications this year, because PM's are sent to the Pan-American Games in Rio.
At the same time Restaurants in Fortaleza estimate a 10 - 25 % fall of tourists this July. Problems in airfare, the image of a violent city, drive away tourists to other states. The strong Real should also mean something, I guess. The tourist branch are very concerned as the money from the tourists are of great importance for the total income in the city. This gives problems for real estate agents, hotels, taxidrivers, (and the GdP girls, I add).
As I in a few days are heading for Fortaleza, I can hope for more beautiful girls to choose from, for a lower cost :-)

I normally go via Lisboa (TAP) or Amsterdam (qxxl.nl). Depending when You travel, London-Fortaleza flights cad be bought for approx. 1000-1200 Euro (July2007).
From London Gatwick I have been told that thomsonfly.com have charter, not for Fortaleza, but Natal. I have heard prices as low as Euro 250 but cant verify this.
Other members can have better info for You ?

yes thomsonfly have a weekly charter flight costing buttons - i was quoted £170 each way, and its direct and way less hours than flying to sao paulo, trekking round the stupid circular arrivals hall and getting on a connecting flight for another 3 hours.....

Add to this, the long journey from my hometown and I'm almost questioning my own sanity for considering such a long trip. I've always been up for a challenge but unless someone can set me straight about my misgivings, I'm staying away from this overrated city. Any comments?

I love fortaleza for a vacation, with a girlfriend or wife. I have never tried mongering there, but just does not seem like that easy. You have plenty of activities for couples, so many nice beaches, buggy rides, horseback rides, ski boats, restaraunts.. It just is a romantic city for me. I have been there 8 times and would think of getting a retirement place there. It is not Rio or Sao Paulo for sure.

Go there and see for yourself. Fortaleza has nice beaches, great nightlife, good non-pro potential and cheap and excellent mongering.
I like Fortaleza a lot. Others might prefer spending all their time in their small playground Copacabana.

I want to be as objective and only minimal of my personal opinion. Goal is I report the facts, you decide your own opinions.
Fortaleza, if you refer to the night scenes around Pr. Iracema area, is very quiet and low level. The night club are merely in patched up brick houses with lack of level sophistication (e.g. air conditioning, bath room, all patch up work). There may be a lot of girls if you got in during the "right time" however, the scene reminds me very much of the Tijuna scene. I took three trips on three different nights (just to make sure i did not miss out anything and offer my best impartial assessment). On all 3 nights, I did not see the quality of the girls dramatically different one night or the other. On "average", I would say the girls around the Iracema area to be similar to the HELP type. However, give them credit, they do have a better sense of humor than the HELP girls. e.g. On many occasions when some of the girls propositioned to me, I waged my finger and gestured to them that they are not as pretty as a type I require, all of them just smiled and walked away.
Totally agree with the board members' assessment that girls in CE are short and tend to have a certain stocky (not fat but stocky) body shape. I prefer the long leg, at least 5'7" (no heel measurement), with a degree of bunda and ivory skin, dark eye type, which is rarer than rare here.
Weather wise, Fortaleza is more muggy than hot compared with Rio. If you intend to loose a few pounds, come. Also, Fortaleza is famous for its seafood however, at least in the Iracema area where the gringos congregate, almost all the restuarants' seafood quality is less than Rio's Copa area. In three days, five meals, I sampled all major seafood restaurants in this area. Since this is not meant to be a food report, I am not going to detail which restaurant I visited or what food I ordered. However, I did find the fish as old (not same day fresh as Rio) and the method of preparation and presentation crude. In one meal, I tasted the fish as at least 2 days old and asked to speak to the chef, he came out and I asked him how "old" were the fish he made for me, knowing that I know fish, he confessed that it was 2 days old. Although I was quite angry that a major fishery town served 2 day old fish to customer, I pardoned him as he was honest with me.
I think if you have only 1-2 wks vacation, definitely don't visit Fortaleza. You actually do yourself a favor by staying at Rio or SP as you have so much more fun without spending all the time and dollar. If however, you have more than 3 wks vacation and want to check out different scenes in Brasil, make Fortaleza as your "cultural awareness" tour.
the scene reminds me very much of the Tijuna scene.Nice summary of Fortaleza; I actually think your description of the city is right on. The quote above was funny to me because the first time I walked into Zipi Bar, I thought I was in Adelita Bar instead! The resemblance between the two clubs was quite striking. But overall, I would have to say the scene in Fortaleza, as unimpressive as it may be, is still leaps and bounds above Tijuana; you really can't compare the two places that much. My worst screw in Forta was still better than my best screw in TJ!
And you're right about the food in Fortaleza as well, it really was disappointing. I think it's the only place I've been to in the world where I ate at more chain restaurants than local restaurants; I'm ashamed to admit it, but my favorite restaurant turned out, of all places, to be Habib's!
But overall, I think Fortaleza is a good "starting point" for guys who have never been to the NE before. For myself, it was good "practice" before heading north to São Luis, Belém, etc. I agree with you that, if you can, spend three or four weeks there, and then move on to neighboring cities/states.

I spent a few days in Forta in 2002. I was not impressed, though I had excellent sessions with one GDP. She was the type described by others here; short, plump/stocky, fair skinned. She did have a nice round butt, which the reason why I went wth her again. The majority of the other ladies I saw were not attractive to me.
I will not monger there again. I might go BYOP style (Bring Your Own Pussy) to spend time at Praia do Futuro.
I was been 3 times in Brasil, my personal ranking is:

Still there are plenty of beauties in Fortaleza, so why go for the unattractive girls? You can't judge a city just because you've seen a dozen of football-shaped-head-women. Me, I've never seen so many fat people as I saw when visiting the US. Because of this I don't categorize americans in general to be fatso's.
When I travel in Brazil I do this little game, when going on a bus or sitting down having a beer. I count 100 women in the age 18-35 passing by, counting the percentage of women which I think are doable. Fortaleza has a good percentage.
Anyway, each to their own. I'm just as happy if the Rio-mongers stay in Copa. Less gringos means better GP-market for me. I only have to share the Fortaleza GP's with thousands od Italians and Dutch tourists.

Absolutely true! If someone spends his time just going to Zipi Bar, Europa Bar and Café do Mar, he will most probably miss the best looking girls. Just move a couple of meters further to Dragao do Mar, and you will see hundreds of beautiful young people hanging out on a Saturday night.
Also right: the girls around Iracema bars often do look similar and represent one type of girl (the one discribed as short, big belly, no waist etc), but there are absolutely beautiful women in Forta - they just seem not to go as GDPs and not to frequent this area.

Thanks for the help all. I was able to enter both Europa and Cafe Del Mar for free. An old "friend" was lurking outside and asked the door man for free entries for me. The worst place of all is Armazem.
In other places, you keep a tab with yourself, where the house anotates your orders; you just have to make sure, after every order, that the anotations were correct, or, at check out, that the bill was added correctly.
In Armazem, you don't have a tab. You order, they bring you the drink, but you have nothing to keep control of it, or use as evidence later on.
Only at check out, they tell you how much you supposedly ordered, and how much you have to pay. I was overcharged two beers.
What I will do next time (if I decide to go back there) is to drink the cheap beer outside, and order nothing inside.
I always watch them scribble on that card. Does not mean I catch them. Maybe by paying attention, they are less likely to try it on me. One of the best ways I save on this is to not buy anyone a drink. Amazing how quickly they ask you for a drink (always the most expensive) then they share it with three amigas. I say no and walk away. These usually have a bad attitiute that you will need to deal with again later.
Some will argue, but if you visit that area, go to Zippies, it is usually better than I have read in these reports. You pay as you drink, no card, no cash out, no tab. If you need to leave in a rush. Done.

Don't pay more than 150 for 2 hours in Rio, 250 all night. AND makle sure they hold their end of the "contract". Don't pay them if they "get sick" and want to leave early. In 2003 I was 18 days in Fortaleza. I must admit that Fortaleza was the wrong choice for me, too few black girls, almost only Morenas and white girls.

Last Saturday night, 23 February, the police was invading the clubs in the Iracema area. Something like 30-50 policemen, some of them riding horses, was raiding first Zipi Bar, then storming into Europa Bar, Bikini and Titanic. Some police dressed civil with camcorders was filming the guests. I believe there also was a TV team present.
I was lucky to be warned just shortly before, as I weared no documents. Rapidly paying my bar tap, and managed to go away into a dark side street, with my girl. Just seconds after, two policemen was blocking also this street. All taxis with passengers out of the area was controlled at the Rua dos Tabajaras, just after Habana Cafe.

a) June is a nice time normally with sunny days. There can be a short rainfall during the night, nothing to worry about.

Almost every attractive girl here in praia de Iracema will ask for 100 and up for 1 hour (with some cases 2 hours).
Girls with a 7 and up in a 10-scale will ask for 200, for sure.
I have been coming here since 2001 and I must say these days girls have changed a lot, with that princess-movie-star-attitude, I personally hate.
Most of them will not approach you, and just wait for foreigners to make their move, to pick at the end the most "easy" one, willing to pay more, and inoffensive from a sexual point of view.

I'm currently writing from my hotel in Fortaleza, having spent here last 3 weeks.
Please tell me the name of the hotel where you are staying. I am contemplating a trip to Fortaleza next month and I would appreciate any advice you can give.
My Hotel has a 110 reais policy for every girl you bring in, with a 6:00AM wake-up call, so I would not recommend it (luckily these rules do not apply to me, as I have been coming here since 2001).
So I would recommend you to stay at Via Venetto, where there are absolutely no girls-related policies, and rates are around 70-80R$.
Another choice could be a flat in the Porto de Iracema buildings, where a 2 room flat can be found around 120R$ / day.
The second option is very close to the Praia de Iracema action, let's say 3 minutes walking, while Via Venetto is at 8R$ cab ride.
These 2 are common options here in FOR, and with no surprises at the end of your stay (extra costs, etc), anyway many Hotels are available around 50R$, and should not be a problem to bring in your princess.
