Has anybody been to a terma called Las Vegas, R. Intendente Magalhães, 1.183, Vila Valqueire, Rio (www.llasvegas.com.br)?
Zona Norte is a large area. There must be a lot of good places. Anybody got info?

BB´s (Bardot) beach is in Buzio. Buzio is a three hour bus (35 R) ride to a sleepy little fishing village that has become a tourist mecca. Do not go there in January. Very, very crowded and very, very expensive. The buses are fantastic...very comfortable, air conditioned, no smoking, and makes a rest stop half way at a immaculate rest area...clean...clean...clean. Other than January it is a quiet little town with lots of restaurants, small hotels, and shops. Clean beaches, no beggars and no shit slingers. Take your own as far as female companionship...and it is family oriented if you have them along.

Centaurus:
(Rua Canning, 44, Ipanema). Centaurus is the most expensive of the Rio termas, and it has some quirky drawbacks, but the women can't be beat. The arrangements are somewhat different at Centaurus. As you enter you are asked to pay R290 (about US$105). This covers admission, and 40 minutes in a nice room with any girl. Drinks are additional and are paid for as you leave. You can also arrange to have two girls at once but will need to pay an additional $100 in advance. After you enter you will be escorted by a girl to the dressing room. She will help you out of your clothes and into a robe and sandals. This is one aspect of Centaurus that's not good. The girls typically hangs around and expects that she will be your date for the evening. Always make it clear that you want to go somewhere to relax for awhile and then look around they get the message. After a shower on the ground floor you head upstairs to the bar area. There is a small room with a TV and massage tables that is often crowded with guys and girls getting friendly while watching soccer (what else!). The bar area is fairly large and has seating at the bar and bench seating elsewhere where it is easier to get to know the girls. They also serve burgers and French fries! There is a small stage where they have girls dancing to the music and on some nights stripping (topless) around midnight or so. The great thing about Centaurus is the girls. There are a lot of them (85 girls is what the management says) and most are stunning.
There are a few not so good looking ones but in general most are friendly and speak passable English (a trait not easily found in other termas) As good as L'uomo is, there's a substantial leap in the beauty of the girls. You will find a number of girls to your liking, and will likely find yourself paralyzed by indecision. When you find the one you like, just smile and wink and they'll come over. They are better conversationalists than girls at the other termas.

located on the second floor of a shopping mall next to rua sequoia campos. it can be difficult to find as the place is full of antique shops and the termas is outside on a balcony with only a small door surrounded by window bricks. entry is r50 (us$18) and they charge r120 for 40 minutes with the girl in a standard room (which is pretty pathetic). upon entering and registering you are given a wrist band which carries an id number and locker key. you then proceed through into the locker area, the key opens a specific locker which contains a robe and sandals. you change into these then go through into the main area which is a darkened disco type arrangement. when buying a drink the barman records the number on your wrist strap ands its added to your tab for when you leave. at the other side of the disco is a room with sun loungers and cable tv. adjoining this room are the toilets with shaving facilities and a steam room and sauna with hot showers and cold showers. after cleaning up and relaxing, you select a girl, then take her to one of the rooms. a lady oversees this and rings a telephone in the room when time is up. the girls at l'uomo are generally decent (there's variability for sure) and are very good at their work. l'uomo is open 3pm-2am mon-sat. and this year (celebrating their 20th anniversary) is open sundays.

Termas Solarium:
(Rua JJ Seabra, 21, Jardim Botanica), located in a nice neighborhood about 15 minutes from Copa or Ipanema. Solarium is more on the upscale end of the termas, although a bit less expensive than Centaurus. Entry is R50 and then R120 for a girl in a standard room for 40 minutes. A normal non sexual massage is R40 at most termas Solarium is a bit off the beaten path if you are living in copacabana.
As you enter the doorway, there is a lady and a guy at the reception, both of whom speak good English. They will explain all the club rules and rates. After you get the locker key, you go the locker , change into a robe and put on a pair of slippers and head over to the second floor where the disco and girls are.. This place is really small and kind of intimidating at first. I usually like to go , check out the girls from a distance, see what’s on offer and then go make a selection and go about my business. Rio
A recent trip to Rio was a blast! I had some concerns about the safety before going there but luckily nothing happened. Stayed in Hotel Debret in Copacabana. Hotel is great and allowed guests with an additional fee of 70 reais. The guest has to leave by 6am though. The hotel is very nice for the price. Breakfast is included on the top floor with a great view of copacabana and ipanema beaches. Rooms were comfy, staff was excellent.
Now the fun part - brazillian girls are wild, horny and friendly. Its very hot in Rio so they dress minimum which is good. Take a long walk across copa and ipa beaches and you will know what I mean. Good report. Did you pick up any cariocas from Meia Pataca or HELP?
During my visit there HELP had a decent collection on offer but Pataca was dead. Not enough good looking ones in there. But then again I went in on a weekday morning so maybe the selction was limited.
I've just come back from my 2nd Rio sexpedition. It's been fantastic. Usually my dreams start when I fall asleep but in Rio the dreams began when I woke up every morning, or every afternoon. There is no doubt that Rio is the ultimate destination.
What can I say about Rio that hasn't been already said? I suppose not much, so I'll just relate some of my most relevant experiences.
Let's start with Help.
Some time ago one of the honourable members of this board classified the Help chicks as hardcores, part-timers or out-of-towners, that's a fucking good classification of the Help fauna. I'd only add newbies to complete the spectrum: in my view each one of the Help birds falls into one of these 4 categories. Yes, there are also terma girls, but they are either hardcores or part-timers (or both).
I found the hardcore index to be higher than when I was there last year, around 80-90% depending on the time. I liked it most between midnight and 1 am, and after 2-3 am I found it hard to spot young, non-hardcore birds. But having said that I must admit there are some gems there, you only need to do a thorough search, have your radar permanently on and avoid the interferences from the mediocrities that occasionally approach you.
On my first night I hunted a part-timer (only Thu to Sun on duty as she also has a daytime job on weekdays), she was a young and beautiful mulatta sweetheart. The asking price was R 300, so we started negotiations to bring that figure down. After some bargaining she didn't seem to go lower than R 250, I was tired as I had landed in Rio 4-5 hours before meeting her, after a 12-hour flight, and I had already fucked a freelancer I met between the Balcony and my apartment, so I didn't make the effort of trying to bargain any further and accepted the R 250 deal for all night till next day at 12:00 (midday). The asking price for all night was R 150, I didn't want to look like a cheap Charlie and bargain that, so I accepted straightaway. She behaved very well throughout the night.

During my recent stay I visited a few termas, Luomo was the one where most of the talent seemed to be concentrated: all the chicks there had great bodies and all except 2 had nice faces too. In all termas the top talents usually ask for R 300 for TLN, and their quotes are quite inelastic as they already make good money during the day and are not really in need of making more money during the night too, I found their quotes hard to negotiate down.
I didn't like the level of quality in Montecarlo, even though there were 3-4 very good-looking birds. If the doctor who, presumably, tests them hasn't seen the bumps is because he's blind, I could see them even in the dim light of the room. I can't understand why that girl doesn't get treatment, eradicating molluscum is the easiest thing on earth. I suppose it's just laziness or ignorance.
In 4x4 there were a high number of chicks but most of them were mediocrities and even a few dogs, I only saw 3 chicks I really liked in this terma.
I also visited a terma that was mentioned here some time ago, but it seems to be under-reported: terma 502 (in Centro). This terma was dissapointing, it's cheaper than all the above but considering the filthy conditions of the rooms and the very low quality of the girls I'd rather pay more and go anywhere else. Most chicks were either mediocrities or dogs, there were only 2-3 good-looking ones. You don't need bathrobe here, you just get in in your own clothes, choose the chick (providing you find anything fuckable there) and go up the the room, which is a shithole. They showed me also the suites, which were bigger shitholes, but equally filthy. When I chose a black chick and went to pay -yes, here you pay before fucking-, they had to gave me R 8 change but the cheeky recepcionist seemed to have forgotten about it, I had to remind her, in Portuguse obviously because no-one speaks a word of English there. Also, each time I asked for a drink my chick picked up the receipt and checked it very carefully, she said they were likely to 'make mistakes' and overcharge you. It didn't happen to me, but by the paranoid way in which my chick checked the receipts I believed her (she had been 1 year working there and knows better than me what's going on).
I must admit the black chick I picked up was very good: beautiful and great attitude and skills. After finishing with this chick I just had a drink and kept contemplating the mediocrities and the hugs who work there, when suddenly I spotted a young mulatta beauty, she was a true 18 years old gem, I couldn't believe she was working there. I'd just finished an exhausting 1-hour session with a chick so I didn't want to go again to the room with her, on the other hand I wouldn't go back to those filthy rooms even if I got paid for it, so I made an appointment with her for TLN that night when she finished her shift. Also, I left a couple of books that I had just bought (worth around R 60) at the reception of 502 and forgot to pick them up when I left (I was so excited thinking of the gem I had just found...), so I went the following day to collect them, but the crooked recepcionists told me the books had been stolen and I couldn't get them back. I'd advise everyone against going to 502 for all the reasons I've just written.

I decided to go inside and check it out. The activity inside HELP is way too grand relative to whats going outside so dont even think of picking up someone from outside if you havent checked out everyone inside. The clean well kept hotel situated on Praca Floriano had rooms costing $22 for the weekend & $ 26 for the other days. I arranged a package deal for 10 days at $230. Rooms were better than the standard rooms at the Hotel Debret.
The Metro stop was 30 yds away, giving me instant gateway to Metro Siqueira Campos in the Zona Sul & Metro Uruguaiana in Centro - thus covering "fun" places that I intended to visit.
In addition many a/c buses 50 yards away on Av Rio Branco, with routes going to both Av Atlantica & Rua Barata Ribeiro in the Zona Sul.
On the north end of Praca Floriano is the Teatro Municipal & also the Camara Municipal with daily outdoor stage concerts at night. Thus even late at night, the outdoor cafes on the Praca Floriano was full of people.
From the Praca, there are pedestrian only cobbled streets all the way to Av Presidente Vargas in Centro. I felt quite safe in this area.
In all my previous visits to "Cidade Maravilhosa". I had religiously visited the regular Termas of the tourist circuit in both Copacabana & Centro. This visit deceided to eliminate many of my regular Termas & to visit other sexual outlets patronised by the locals. Some of them, I had visited in Dec 2002.
So took a Metro and walked to a minor-termas that I had visited last year.
Termas 21 at Rua Buenos Aires 21. It is CLOSED. Can anyone check this out.

3. In Rio I would like to drive by bus or metro at daylight. What about risk to get ripped off.
Can you give me more help, please think of your own first trip to Rio and about important things you haven't known.

1. MC is accepted at most places including malls, termas, restaurants etc. I am not sure if they made a copy of it or not - but what difference does it make to you? Lot of times they will ask you to write your passport number with it when you're paying because sometimes people refute the charges later. So keep your passport number handy and MC/Visa should be ok.
2. Taxis are very affordable - at most 12-15 reias from copacabana to most termas and central downtown. I am not sure about villas mimosa. Terma prices are different. For example, centaurus is most expensive with 290R entry but one girl is included. Solarium and Luomo are around 60R entry but the girl and room typically around 150R extra. So it varies, check the previous reports here for exact prices as I dont remember exactly.
3. Dont travel by metro or bus. You can get ripped off. Taxis are very cheap so its not worth it to travel by buses. Taxis will get you wherever you want to go faster and safely.
4. Other tips include: Learn some basic portugese. Almost noone speaks english there so if you want to negotiate with girls, flirt with them you need to know some portugese otherwise you will have to learn sign language.
Dont carry lot of cash on you. Leave your wallet, watch, chains and other valuables at home. Keep money hiding in several different places like your socks, shoes etc.
And dont worry its safe if you are careful. You can also read the detailed report I posted on Rio earlier - about two weeks ago here about my first trip and experience.

Credit cards are readily accepted everywhere in Rio. I personally use Amex, so mastercard should be fine. In fact some places prefer Mastercard for unknown reasons.
I never saw them making copies of CC's atleast in the Termas. They are pretty professional. I personally never had anyone try what you ask above!

In general most places charge 50 reais for entrance, Centaurus is 290reais.

I recently came back from Rio. My suggestion would be to take a cab. They cost 5-10reais. Again I personally never went by bus as reading reports here and elsewhere people recommended not to do so.
Why do you want to inconvenience yourself in a bus when the taxis are so cheap.
I didnt catch a taxi to centro, but a cab ride from copa to the rio sul mall is about 15 reais prepaid.
Airport to Copa is about 56 reais prepaid at the airport. Prepaid taxis are slightly more expensive than the normal ones but are safer.

I had two short visits to Rio in November, and they were both great. Upon arrival in Rio, the first trip, on the way in to the hotel, I called a friend of mine around 11:00 a.m., and he and another friend were having lunch, and had been up all night partying. Welcome to Rio. We agreed to get together later that night.

PART I
A listing of secondary/minor Termas that I visited for "fun". The vast majority of the clients at these places are locals. Some of these Termas hardly see an "estrangeiro" (foreigner), maybe except the odd Portuguese speaking ex-pat in Rio. So speaking basic Portuguese is helpful.
Most are street clothes Boite type places, a couple with robes.
Cleanliness range from acceptable to contamination - ie, narrow dingy cabine with unchanged sheets. But in all of these minor Termas, I discovered Garotas of "Gem" quality range upto 8. Many are young Garotas from small towns in the poverty sticken NorthEast, fresh in "Cidade Maravilhosa".
REPEAT visits to Termas, that I had visited during prior trips.

From the 4pm opening to 5pm, there is an "Promocao" - 2 Garotas for 30 mts for R90. At 430pm there were only about 10 Garotas. Garotas are mainly Mulattas & Morenos with an occasional Caucasian. A few younger ones, but most about 25 yrs plus. Grades stop at 7, with a rare grade 8.
Just before the "Promocao" was over for the day, I made a politically correct statement in black & white. With FERNANDA (20yrs) & BEATRIZ (26). Upstairs were acceptable rooms with showers. Everyone has covered most of the basics. I did want to cover the use of a credit card. I have been to Brazil/ Argentina over 50 times in the past 5 years. My number was stolen pretty frequently at one time. It has stopped. Usually they will run the card right in front of you. You can ask to go with the waiter to have them run your card. It is never a problem. I still use my card everywhere I go. If you use your card in the termas there is sometimes an extra charge. Some termas make you pay cash for the girls.
Rio is like any other major city around the world. Keep your eyes open. If you are traveling alone look for some friends to go out with at night. There are always plenty. We come in all sizes shapes and colors so just find some one with a kind face.
In front of the Othon Palace hotel in Copa you can always find a lot of girls to look at and many travelers. There are also many travelers in front of the Ceasar Park hotel in Ipanema. In both places make sure you check the prices for the chairs and drinks before you order. They can get expensive if you do not.

Rio Report - December 2003
I just got back from Rio yesterday. This was my third visit to Rio. I am not a much of fan of Help (too many mulattas and too much of hustle and bustle kind of atmosphere; just my preference) nor the street scene in Rio (too many TVs and weirdos). I pretty much stick to Termas and Barbarellas. Here are some of my impression of various places I've visited this time. I also included my opinion of money and hotels in Rio:
Centaurus - Still has the most number of good looking garotas. Located in Ipanema near Arpoador. They do charge a bit more than other termas (must play R$ 290 to get in which includes the girl; if one does not take a girl, there is no refund). The annoying R$ 20 tourist tax is included in this amount (to me this is a BS). Also, they will rip you off in exchage rates if you pay in US $. For the tourist tax, I just swallow it and I never pay them in US $. They are definately to take advantage of tourists. There are one dark skin dude (usually work the earlier hours between 4PM to 10PM) and two middle aged women who usually come in later. All of them are not much of charmers at least (not very polite nor customer friendly).
The facilities haven't changed much in last three years. IMO, their facilities need to updated soon to keep the "most posh" terma image as they show some signs of wear and tear. Centaurus is OK for Rio standards, but they are a dump compared to some of Sao Paulo places.
Most of girls at Centaurus have good attitudes with few not so great. Performancewise, I would say about a half doesnt really get into the action (they just wants you to finish the trick ASAP) and the other half GFE. My first awesome terma experience was at Centaurus about three years ago (with a blond bombshell Marcella - I wish she was still there) so I have some fond memories of this place. Also, the half who does GFE keeps me going to this place. Centaurus is open from 4PM to 3AM Mon-Sat (Sun closed).
I would say this place gives you most choices amongst Termas as far as beauties in Rio, but YMMV depending on who you are with.
L'Uomo- Located in Copacabana at Rua Sequia Campos in a big shopping mall. Doenst have as many girls as Centaurus. The facility features a small sauna area (it is no big deal since I hang around the bar area) but rest are pretty well decorated and maintained. The regular cabanas are bit small for my taste. The bar area IMO looks more clean and organized than Centaurus. The girl at reception does speak good english and is pretty helpful. Lookwise, L'Uomo is a bit behind Centaurus. Everytime I went to L'Uomo, there are only about 3-4 girls who I would consider 7 or above (those 3-4 are enough for me to come regularly). Most do perform GFE and almost always they make me feel like you are welcomed. I would recommend to get a bigger room (I think it cost about 70R more) since the regular rooms are like closet size. I think the entrance fee is R$ 40 and R$ 130 for girl in a regular room (you pay when you leave unlike Centaurus). They do close early in Sat and Sun at 12AM (open 7 days).
Overall, this is a place to be for Rio and is a very solid place.
4X4 (quatro por quatro) - Located in Centro on Rua Buenos Aires. Since they are in Centro, 4X4 is more of place for local businessmen. They have a big facility but is very disorganized and is somewhat run down IMO. I have never been in 4X4 until this trip. Since there were some positive reports about this place, I decided to go there for the first time. The reception do not speak english well. I think cost is similar to L'uomo level. They do have many selections with few beauties. IMO not as many beauties as Centaurus. Most girls do perform well, but distance from Zona Sul and my preference to other termas make this place second tier level IMO. Also, not as many english speakers as other termas (none of girls could even speak basic English).
An OK place IMO, but not up to L'Uomo, Centaurus, and Solarium.
Solarium - They are located in Jardim Botanico area (the other side of the Lagoa). There some nice bars in that area (more of local yuppie kind of places). Similar size to L'Uomo and a bit worse selection of girls than L'Uomo IMO. I did not see anyone who can wow me in Solarium, but there are some attractive ones. The girls were not initiating much towards me (none approached me two times I went there). Cost is bit more than L'uomo but is lower than Centaurus (pay when you leave; only Centaurus makes pay up front). The cabanas are decent size (about same as Centaurus). The girls I were with did perform well, but not a killer experience I was used to in Brazil.
Overall, they are decent but there are better ones in Rio.
Barbarella - a Boite located near Ave. Princess Elisbeth near Lido side of Copacabana. More of upscale place than Help (waiters with bow ties, someone to open car doors, etc.) but smaller and cozier. Normally about 50-80 girls working. Some are stunners but mostly 7-8's. It costs about R$ 50 if you dont take a girl and few drinks (about R$ 100 with a bar fine). Most girls will ask 300-350 R$, but most will take around R$ 250. This place is for take out only (no rooms on presmise). This is very much a YMMV place, so makes sure the garota looks like the passionate kind. Very few mulattas and mostly garotas from southern Brazil or Minas Gerais.
Overall, this place presents a different atmosphere than termas but must watch what you get since the quality is much more inconsistent than termas.
Money - If you pay with US$, you will get ripped off often. I always pay in Reais. Since C/C fraud is big in Brazil, I would only use for hotels and emergencies. Since cambios at best gives you about 2.8 reais for US $1 (real current rate $1 = R$ 2.94) so you lose 5% unless one use an ATM (Citibank and HSBC will take most major ATM cards). Usually, I just exchange about us$40 in airport (located 3rd floor of the international terminal for taxi money) first than go to Citibank or HSBC near my hotel. There are some freelance taxi drivers at the airport when you get off the plane who are trying to rip you off. You can either go to an airport taxi booth (not the regular yellow cap) which charges a bit more than regular metered taxi. The taxi fare should cost you about R$ 40- R$ 50 to Zona Sul. So make sure to take metered yellow cap outside the airport terminal.
Hotels - Generally speaking, ones by beach are more expensive. If you are really budget conscious, ones off the beach are cheaper. In Copacabana, Debret is probably the best deal for beachside hotel. However, most of Debret's rooms dont have ocean views. Ones with views does cost extra. Regular rooms are bit small for my taste. Also, Rio Roiss is near DEbret but do not have rooms with ocean views. Many like Rio Roiss for location and value. Both are more of budget hotels. They are most part clean and efficient. There are upscale ones like Marriott, Sofitel, Copacabana Palace, and Rio Othon, but they are US$200 and up. Hotels like Miramar Palace and Luxor Regente are not quite that expensive but will run about $100-$150 per night. Many upscale ones wont allow garotas in your rooms. Debret does charge extra for girls.
If you dont like hectic atmosphere of Copacabana, there are near by Ipanema and Leblon. There are good number of hotels in this area but not as many as Copa. Mar Ipanema was very disspointing when I did stayed there (not by the beach, on a noise main street, and rooms were old; checked out after one night). I have heard Praia Ipanema is dissapointing also. Caesar Park is very upscale place and Sol Ipanema is reliable but not cheap (about us$120 a room). This time I stayed in Marina Palace in Leblon. This is more upscale than Debret or Rio Roiss caliber hotels. Marina Palace do not include breakfast always so one must deal with them to include breakfast. I did book my room though Utell (travel agency for mostly business clients) which included breakfast. The hotel is nicely decorated and has computers with internet access for extra charge. All rooms have ocean views and are bigger than most other hotels' rooms. They are girl friendly. Leblon is more of residential area than a tourist area which makes the area more peaceful. However, Leblon is a way from Copacabana which makes you spend more for taxi. Overall, I liked Marina Palace and Leblon. There are Parthenon accor hotel (same street but not by the beach) and Leblon Palace (located on main street about two blocks from the beach) in Leblon area.
Still, Rio is a blast compared to US. Speaking Portuguese makes the trip a lot better though. Even my basic portuguese made this trip more enjoyable than previous ones. I still would recommend Rio to other mongers.

About your question if Barbarellas has rooms or not or is it just takeout. It is just takeout, the place used to have the best girls in town and you will pay more. Yeah the tourist tax is annoying, but I just look at is as one entry fee. Reais 20 is not that much so I didn't mind it one bit.

Can you tell me where the ATM machine (which takes cirrus or star) is located in Rio international airport? If I would've known that they had an ATM machine with cirrus or star, I would've used it. I remember that they had Brazillian bank ATM machines (which most of them do not take cirrus nor star), but not ones with Cirrus or Star.
Also, taxi fares would be a bit different depending on your destination. For example, Leblon would be a bit higher than Copacabana due to distance. If traffice is good, sometimes taxi fare would be around R$ 35. I've never seen R$ 30 with a meter (I took the same route about 7 times).

If you have never been to Barberellas then you need to go at least once in your life if you are going to be in Rio. It's a Boite(night club) near Princess Isabella Blvd where there are other Boites of the same nature, for example Franks Bar and others. Barberellas has always been considered the best, more classy and with the best reputation for girls. I have been in there and have seen dozens of 9's and 10's and I have been in there and saw just many average beautiful women.
Go there, get a table and hang out, watch the show, watch the gogo girls as they are available for take out. Not all the girls take their clothes off and do gogo some just walk around and at times they all get up on the big stage and dance so that everybody can see them, they put themselves on display.
What is interesting about the gogo girls is that you can see them with their clothes off before you make your choice. Its also a different thrill if you live in the states as the gogo girls for the most part are not for takeout unless she likes you of course. Yes you are right about Barbarellas, it is more expensive to party there but all I was saying was that you should see it once. Just like on my last trip in all the years I have been going to Rio I had never been to Centaurus and I went and Im glad I had the experience.
I haven't been to Barbarellas in about 3 years for the most part I just strictly go to Help now with during a 10 day trip I go once to a termas and get one escort delivered but Help every night unless I meet a non pro normal girl then I go to the normal clubs with her.

Barbarella does have some of the prettiest girls in Rio along with Centaurus. After coming to Brazil for 50+ times I know the regulars and am always looking for new talent there. Barbarella is certainly overpriced- no doubt about that, but the entry fee of 50 reais is nominal for that is what most fo the termas like LUOMO, Solarium etc.. charge.
Centaurus charges 290 reais but that includes a girl and the rooms in Centaurus were much better than Luomo for example.
Still agree with you that Centaurus is overpriced as well. I would say 200 reais would be more like it for Centaurus. (Other termas charge 50 for entry + 120 for the girl, so a total of 170) Since Centaurus is reputed to have some of the hottest brazilian girls, I belive they use that to their advantage and make the big bucks.
I personally liked Centaurus and had a great experience there. Also found that a lot more girls speak English there than other termas. Did you have any negative experiences there?

I am a frequent visitor to Rio and been guided by this board thanks to some great reports. Since I had a pretty active trip I thought I'd try to make a contribution in return. I was on business in Sao Paulo (see SP section) and managed to arrange my travels to spend three days in Rio on vacation at the end. In my previous times in Rio, I had progressed from the boate scene (Frank's and Barbarella's) to the termas (Centaurus, L'Uomo, Solarium, and 4x4 - my personal favorite), and an agency that I found (Utopiasex) that has a madam who answers email. I've never had the urge to spend time in Help, maybe some day... This time, I wanted to sample some other agencies and contacted one of the locals that rents an apartment and provides some 'guide' services. My Portuguese has not been good enough to order up escorts by phone (I've tried unsuccessfully in the past), and the hotels I stay at make it difficult or cost prohibitive to receive multiple guests during my stay. While I was again staying at a 5 star hotel (Sofitel), I wanted access to an apartment for fun instead of going to love motels (and dealing with potential language issues in those places in addition to the agencies).
Day 1 - L'Uomo: I arrived late on a Thursday night, after checking into my hotel realized it was too late to go to my favorite terma, 4x4, so I grabbed a cab to L'Uomo, arriving about 11pm. I checked out Terma 61 a couple of times back in May. It was a R10 entry back then too. Like you said, most of the girls are not top tier but there are certainly gems to be found. In Rio for the second time. Has been raining during the last day. Staying at Marriott on Copacabana Beach. I walked down toward Help intending to go in for the first time. Had only 109 Reals, so I went around the corner to a Brazilian ATM. The machine ate my card and since it was Friday night the security guard said no one would be there until Monday, so I was out of luck. I do not do credit card cash advances because of the interest rates, wife suspicion, etc.

i bought a phone at Rio Sul shopping center this past summer. it cost R259, which was $88 at the time. i buy the minutes at just about any newsstand, or convienece stores.. some internet cafes also sell minutes. your're gonna need a local to buy a phone, btw. just like here in the states, you have to show a current ID and provide a local address in order to buy a phone. (my phone is in my Rio GF's name.) on my last trip, i had to re-register the phone for some strange reason.
a phone can be rented for R15 a day, at most travel agencies. also some rental apartments include a free cell phone.

it's cheaper if you just bring your own phone -- get a cheap phone like Nokia 5120i (TDMA 800/ AMPS or 8260 (DualBand / TriMode TDMA 1900/800 and Tuned AMPS ) -- and just get the phone number; if you have GSM dual band or tri band (even better quad band) then just buy the chip about 12 dollars. They probably ask a local address/id but I got away with just my passport. (I also bought a phone in Fortaleza - they did not even ask a local address there).

In addition to Hobbysts comments (which is correct), as you may know, these phones are known as GSM phones. GSM phones are activated through a small piece of card (known as SIM - Subscriber Information Module) installed in the phone.
Most of countries outside of US (except Japan and Korea) are using one or more GSM carriers using dual band at 900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz so the GSM phones should be able to compatible with these bandwidth.
In US, GSM has been increasingly deployed (AT&T, Tmobile, Cingular) using 850Mhz and 1900 Mhz. Therefore, if you can get a GSM phone (known as tri-band) supporting 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz, you are all set in US and outside of US.
One more technical huddle to overcome is to get a GSM phone that is unlocked. This means the phone can take any SIM card and be worked with it. Some of GSM phones sold through the celluar carriers are locked. This means that the phone is only working with the very carrier.
If you search through the web ('unlocked GSM phones'), you will find many vendors who are willing to see you unlocked GSM phones.
I have one of those tri-band GSM phones and have two SIM cards - one from Vodaphone (UK based) and one from TIM (Brazil based). I pop in the TIM's card when I'm Brazil and pop in the Vodaphone' SIM card while in other countries.
Vodaphone has roaming agreements with about 200 countries so as long as I have Vodaphone's SIM card in the phone, people who know my UK number, they can contact me. It works great!
In summary, if you are willing to, buy a tri-band unlocked GSM phone here in US or in Brazil and buy a SIM card from in-country operator (i.e. TIM in SP area in Brazil) at about R$30.00 and then you are all set to go. Then you can add minutes per your needs.

I have a GSM phone and was wondering, once you install the SIM card of the country you are in, how do you make calls? More specifically, do you retain your current phone # and do you need to use country codes when placing a call, say in Brazil? Does the same hold true for incoming calls- does the caller have to use the US country code to dial into your phone?

I have been to some dangerous places in SEA(not for mongering) and hooked myself up with a guide/driver to get to them of course. First, I am an adventurer. Second a Girl addict(all shapes and size's etc.). I agree you have to be prepared for trouble and deal with it accordingly. But its been my experience that the one's who attack you because of "religion/believe/race/" are of the minority. Its been posted before that 99% of the people we encounter are good and decent. But if you walk into an area where the "good and decent" percentile drops bellow 50%, then you best be prepared for some type of aggressive encounter. And I tell you this having been threatened and even attacked in countries like Nepal, Thailand and Burma. And these are countries I will continue to visit when time and money permits.
Now with that said. I am visiting Rio in March, and want to take pictures in the infamous favelas. Do you think it possible for me to pay one of the local bad boys to assist me on this little adventure? TIA
Once you intall the SIM card of the Country (i.e. Brazil), your GSM phone has acquired new identity - new local
brazilian phone number. So your current phone number would not be recognized until you install the current SIM card back into the phone.
I bought and installed a SIM card from TIM (one of Brazilian GSM carrier in Sao Paulo area). My UK number GSM phone acquired Sao Paulo mobile number, let say 8111-9538. Now GSM mobile numbers begin 8 so when you see phone numbers starting with 8, it could be mobile phones.
Each mobile carrier in Brazil (or other countries) has its own access code. TIM's access code is 041.
Outbound calls
Phone calls within Sao Paulo, dial 041-xxxx-xxxx
Phone calls to Rio dial 041-yyy(Rio's city code, is 021?)-xxxx-xxxx
Phone calls to US 0041 (0 plus access code)-1 (country code)-xxx(area code)-xxx-xxxx
Inbound calls
From USA, 011-55-yyy(city code)-xxxx-xxxx
From other cities to Sao Paulo, 041-yyy(city code)-xxxx-xxxx
I'm sure whether you need a local address to buy a SIM card. One of my local staff bought me my card so I can't verify that. I would try to use hotel address if you can get away with it.

i did a google search on "unlocked gsm phones," and got a bunch of hits. checked out serveral site and those phones are expensive, none under $100. i did find a canadian site where they were a little cheaper. do you have a site to recommend?

Go on ebay and you will find a GSM unlocked phone that is not that expensive. But most unlocked GSM phones will cost you about $80 - 100 dollars, even on Ebay.

I agree with Nodd. The cell phone information is very useful. I think that it is really necessary information for the Monger to get a "hook up". We Mongers need to be well equiped for our journey into the Marvelous City.
By the way, has anyone seen this girl lately on the beach in front of the Othon. She goes by Regi. Good English. Great GFE. I lost touch with her when she emailed asking for money and I did not send any.

Nice report on an escort service in Rio.
I usually use the service of one at least one time on each trip. last time, first week of December, I called Barra escort for Luciana Moura, I loved her pictures on the website.
