I am planning a trip to Columbia after Carnival in '06 Brasil.
I do not know much about Columbia but, I would like know where to start first.
I will be traving to Barq, Cart, Med and Bogo and Cali.
Is it considered cheaper than Brasil?
Is it possible to rent an apartment for 7 days in each City.
I want to travel to diffrent cities by car, is this recommended.
What month can I get than warmest weather?
Would appreciate the help, other please save unuseful remarks?
Can you list the places that I can find the 9 and 10 scale morenas in each city.
For each city can you list 3 or 4 places for the chicas.
Dose anyone have apartment contacts for each city?
What is the floor price that you guys are being charged for an all nighter?
Are there many chicas in their early 20's.
Would appreciate your help.
I have been reading the posts bt still would appreciate some help.
Going from Miami and trying to find the cheapest non-stop route and an airline where I can earn miles.
Only reply if your willing to help

I can help you in Barranquiila with the apartment and the women, traveling by car between Barranquiila and Cartagena during day time, I see no problem, from Bogota to Medellin or to Barranquilla although the scenery is fantastic, nothing like you would ever see in the States, it is not recomended, things have improved a lot with the new President Uribe, but still I would advice foreigners against it.Peter.

Guys I have done extensive research on both Cali and Cartegena and need help deciding on which one to visit in Nov. . Cartegena is more tourist freindly and therefore the women are more expensive. Cali has a good scene and is less expensive but can be more dangerous. (Please let me know if Im geting this wrong guys). The definitive factor for me is going to have to be where I am most likely to find morenas and or Black Colombian women. They are gorgeous! (At least in my opinion). So which city has the most/friendliest/lease expensive of this type. Please help. My worst case Scenario is going back to the DR or Brazil and Im really tired of those scenes. Thanx guys.

Cartagena has plenty of morenas for you, and so does Barranquilla, Cartagena will be holding the Miss Colombia Beauty Pagent in the first week on Nov. A lot of people will be there, so rooms become scarce and expensive. And your appreciation abouth these cities is correct.Peter.

Gipse, most of the action is in Rodadero. There are many resturants and clubs in that area. I was last there in May and it was dead. I hear in the high season it is very crowded. I stayed in a cabana near Hotel Zuana and it was nice. The food in the outside resturants is very inexpensive and very delicious. We hired a taxi for 30 dollars to give us a tour of Santa Marta. It lasted for about 4 hours and i ejoyed it very much. I dont know about p4p in Santa Marta, but it is a nice place to take your novia.

No offense Tom, but me thinks you have never seen a World Class beach if you consider ANYTHING in Cartagena city acceptable and consider Islas Rosario "superb". Colom, bia has tremendous beaches BUT most are in areas with serious security issues and NOT places where most mongers would tred. San Andres and Provedencia have the best beaches in areas that are safe. Also, the other beach areas have NOBODY who speaks English and no creature comforts or LDV style places to find chicas.

Is Rodadero in Santa M. worth visiting?
Is Curry correct about the friendliness of Cartegena.
Which city is the cheapest but offers the best slection of chicas, BUT most friendly people?

I too am coming off of BRASIL (not RIO) but the Northeast.
People wer so friendly and further form RIO, the cheaper the garotas.

Is Rodadero in Santa M. worth visiting?
To me EL RODADERO is just a touristic resort, and Santa Marta a small city. I don`t know what the impression of other mongers is about these two places, but for me is good to spend a day or two , but that is about it.
And about friendliness,we are warm hearted people always willing to help, you will find that in any city in Colombia.

I apologize in advance for this post not being directly related to Colombia, but I am planning a trip to Colombia this spring and was interested in visitting Brazil and Argentina as well. Unfortunately, I have never been able to log onto argentinaprivate.com since Jackson first set it up. I have tried of and on again, but I always get:

"The page cannot be displayed"

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what's going on?

[blue]Hi Mr Matt,

The Argentina site has been experiencing an intermittent DNS problem that prevents it from being "found" by a very small number of potential visitors. I'm aware of the problem, but it's been difficult to identify.

Thanks,

The best beaches are WAY past Rodadero/SAnta Marta/Taganga where Yellow Fever joins FARC as a real risk. That keeps the numbers of gringos to a real minimum (which is good IMHO). Even in the most developed area between Barranquilla and the Venezuelan border, Rodadero, there is no McDonald's, no shopping centers, no movie theaters NO Riquisimo or Yogurt shops, no cruise ships, nor are there ANY US style businesses. There are no gringo apartment blocks like Laguito, nor is there an old city with the charm of Cartagena's Ciudad Vieja.

The plushest resorts South of town by the airport, Zuana & Irotama, have good but expensive food options and nice (but not great) beaches. Neither of the two discos in town are good pick up spots at all (NOTHING even remotely like LDV), nor are there Pleyboy style casas. There are no beach touts hawking hookers (like Tony at Las Velas beach). They hawk trhe usual useless junk and overpriced trips or jetski rentals, but NOT chicas. Rodadero is a family oriented beach resort frequented by conservative Colombian families on weekends-during the week it is deserted. It is also notorious for paras (right wing death squads).

I quote Robert Young Pelton's "the World's Most Dangerous Places", page 463: "Santa Marta. The North end of town and the Rodadero Beach areas are extremely dangerous. Do not travel alone into these areas. Daylight armed robberies of tourists are commonplace. Thieves will often relieve their victims of their clothes as well as all other valuables." And Pelton is NOT a paranoid like the US State Department (whose website states that the only places in Colombia deemed sufficiently safe for US visitors are Cartagena and SAn Andres island).

Try the Puerto Colombia or Galerazamba area beaches (between Cartagena and Barranquilla) first before venturing uyp to the Upper Magdalena or the even more sketchy La Guajira beyond.

Laguito and Bocagrande with a few Colombian babes in bikinis on them are superb beaches.

I look forward to seeing them and any fellow mongers on about Jan. 21 to 26. Also Medellin Jan. 16 to 21.

This is not a report but a request for advice.

In the past few years I've taken four 3-week trips to Brazil, seen most of the Brazilean coast, and learned a bit of the language. The women there are fabulous but I thought I might try something new this year. I have about 3 weeks available from late November to early December and my Spanish skills are quite poor - I'm sure I will constantly confuse it with Portuguese.

One option I'm considering is 1 week in Ecuador followed by 2 weeks in Columbia (if I can get open-jaw flights to support this). I would take the bus in between and, based on the reports I've read, would certainly want to stop in Cali & Medellin as well as some nice beach area (Cartagena?).

Another option is to spend 10 days in Columbia and then 10 days in Brazil. Local (within-country) travel would be by bus but I would fly between the countries to save time. [Some future trip I would like to try international travel in the region by bus and boat.] Again, this depends upon getting appropriate flights to support this.

I travel alone and typically like to spend about 3 days in one place before moving on. Which of these itineraries would you recommend? (Or would you recommend something else?) Are there specific cities, clubs/brothels, beaches, or hotels you recommend? Any particular tips/warnings? Should I consider a side trip to the Galapagos (and is there any mongering there)?

Finally, as I'm nearly 52 I thought I might try Vitamin V (or similar) for the first time. Should I try to get that here in the US before traveling or is it available (and cheaper) en route?

Thanks for your time!

Peter: About safety in Rodadero, I was quoting from a famous book NOT from personal observations. I have never had a problem there, but the police DO warn you (especially at night). The police claim there is frequent guerilla (and criminal) activity just South of Rodadero The sand at Irotama/Zuana beaches is white, and they are reasonably clean. WAY better than ANYTHING in Cartagena city, but not better than Playa Blanca (30 minutes or so outside Cartagena) but they are quite plain and nothing spactacular like in Tayrona and Guajira.

Yankee: 1. it is spelled ColOmbia and 2. taking buses between cities (or traveling by land at all!) is NOT advised in Colombia. 3. Viagra is available for a fraction of US prices without prescription. Try it (you'll like it). But if you have a heart condition or take other meds DO ask you doctor FIRST!

Sorry about the spelling. Would you please elaborate on your misgivings about bus/land travel between cities in Colombia? While I am aware of the violence there, and have been concerned about this, I have also read stories of people bicycling and taking buses/taxis without significant problems. On my first trip to Brazil, I was very concerned for my safety but have since become comfortable taking overnight buses and walking around most (not all) urban areas. In Colombia, I thought I would stick to the daytime buses on main routes (Cali-Medellin-Bogota-Cartegena) and not venture into the interior jungles toward the Brazilean border. I do not dress in any flashy way (no jewelry at all, sneakers, jeans or shorts, t-shirt, rather beat-up luggage) and generally do not attract attention. This has served me well as I traveled by buses many times on the whole coast of Brazil (from Floripa to Jericoacoara). Is Colombia that different?

but if the police catches you, you go to jail while they investigate, and this applies to us colombians, so i am sure it can be a lot worse for a non spanish speaking person coming from a foreign country.

Cali to Medellin is an OK route for land travel, ditto Cartagena to Barranquilla and even SAnta Marta. Still would avoid doing them at night. Look you could cruise Putumayo and live to tell the tale, but that does NOT mean it is smart. In russian roulette you only lose 1 out of 6 times too!

BOG to BAQ is a WHOLE DIFFERENT THING as that road passes through some VERY insecure areas. I wouldn't do it. By the way, do a google search on striking viking to read the tale of a VERY bold guy who motorcycled across Colombia and whose friends paid bribes to get him released when he was sequestred at a roadblock. HE is a very tough, resourceful, guy. Think you'll fare as well?

OK. Safety is relative. What might be a good & moderately-safe route for a mongering tour of Colombia? Based on comments, here's what I'm thinking:

FLY: USA to Bogota. (2 nights)
BUS: Bogota to Cali. (2 nights)
BUS: Cali to Medellin. (2 nights)
BUS: Medellin to Cartegena. (2 nights)
BUS: Cartegena to Barranquilla. (2 nights)
BUS: Barranquilla to Santa Marta. (2 nights)

Then somehow fly/travel out. I have a total of about 3 weeks so I could either (a) spend more time in Colombia than indicated above and head directly back to USA, or (b) fly to Brazil for awhile before heading home.

How would you change the above itinerary and why?

Depends on how important safety is for you. You might prefer to do BOG Cali and Medellin Cartagena by plane. The rest should be ok.

Several years ago I have done all these bus trips, plus a few more through more dangerous areas. In the last 4 to 5 years I wouldn´t have done it. Now I am not sure. The situation is improving, but there are still risks.

Summer 04 we travelled by bus from Cartegena to the Venezuelan border and back to Santa Marta to overnight. East of Santa Marta can be spooky (dangerous) because of the ruralness. Different people bord the bus at numerous stops to sell. You can never know for sure. My GF told me to keep my mouth shut. We talked only in very low whisper. There are numerous police/military roadblocks along the route. The landscape, people, villages, businesses were an experience to see.

From S.M. we returned by taxi to Cartegena and was stopped by police 3 times and I was searched once and my suitcase was searched. All 3 times the taxi was searched. I was told later that trip could have been my last. Take note and be careful.

Last two trips (most recently 2 weeks ago) that I went on a Sunday, neither La Piscina, nor El Castillo, nor any place other than Las Paisas and Casonas were open on a Sunday. Even Abejitas (Cra 14 83-23 tel: 616-2255) closes at like 6.

Bar Zhivago, Juan Pablo - Cra. 18 No. 93A-83 256-8925 - The house fee is $60,000 and the girls ask between COP100.000-200.000 per hour.

Personally I would change it by staying longer in each place. You mentioned you like to only stay 3 days or so, but I wonder if you appreciate the distances involved for all that bus travel. You are looking at 10-14 hours or so per trip, until you get to the north coast.

At that rate you'll spend half your vacation time feeling warmed up on the bus while sitting through B grade action films.

Colombia is worth spending the time. 3 weeks is better but still not enough.

It may take you a week or so to find your groove with the language.

Except for Cartagena and Santa Marta, there's very little in itself to make each city a tourist destination. The highlight of Colombia is its people (cliched I know, but fundamentally true here).

Not sure why you'd leave each new place after a day or so (after allowing for travel time). That gives you no time to build anything personal, which is where your fun memories are going to come from.

Consider also that most Colombian cities are dead during the week. So hitting a new city on Tuesday night and leaving Thursday morning would be almost a total waste.

You guys have to remember that you stand out, even if you never open your mouth.

I did mentioned in one of my early posts that one time I took out an Italian American, average height, black hair, and dark skin, and people would address him for directions, thinking he was a Colombian born like me.

There have been with this new President what they call CARAVANAS DE PAZ, which I would translate as PEACE CONVOYS, which are hundreds of cars and buses going to a given place, take for example: Barranquilla to Bucaramanga, all leaving at the same hour and being guarded by road Army and by helicopters, it is a slow trip but it should be pretty safe.

Think of it like rush hour but much faster.

If you tell me which destination you are interested in and from where in Colombia, I will find out when the next Caravana might be and I wil post it. Peter.

Medellin is a terrific city. Two 5 star shopping malls, many normal malls, Paisas say it is the cleanest city in Colombia.

The rotating restaurant on top of the Dann Carlton is a nice dinner date. So is Las Palmitas, overlooking the city. Great food too. Afterward, go to El Tesoro (top shelf mall in the city) to shoot pool, or have drinks and watch the lights of the city. If the day is right, you can watch the fireworks from Pueblito Paisa.

Have a great time!

Thanks mongers for the contributions to this thread.

I have alot of reading yet to do here. However, I saw on Cartenega thread reference to Isla De Rosario as a snorkle and perhaps limited diving destination. I am beginning to make flight reservations out of Cartnega to San Andreas Island (but will purchase the ticket from within Colombia as suggested for a better price). I would like to do a few dives off San Andreas Island between December 8-14.

Does any one have a contact who runs a good dive shop there? Are there any mongers going to be around who want to dive? Thanks.

Diving in the Rosarios is OK, NOT great. Try and find a chica in Cartagena to bring to San Andres though (most would be THRILLED!) as it is slim pickings once you are there. Also, you'll be surprised to see how San Andres seems to be an entirely different country from Colombia (i.e. EVERYBODY speaks English).

I'll select a dive shop from Cartenega for Rosarios and girl . . . maybe a chica from Medellin for San Andreas. Since T. Slim pickings on San Andres is more an accepted myth than a reality. I think since that's "the word", no one ever looks for chicas there. During my trip there, a local guy took me around to three casas and two "strip" clubs. There were all kinds of hot Colombianas to choose from. The most upscale club I would rate just a notch below La Dolce Vita in Cartagena, but then not many places anywhere can compare favorably to LDV. Prices are generally higher there than LDV, I think an hour on site was 150,000 and todo la noche was 200,000. But there were chicas de Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, etc just like LDV.
Bringing your own is preferable I agree, but not a necessity.

I bought an unlocked GSM phone yesterday for about $70.00 off e-bay. If I understand this correctly I will purchase a SIM chip when I arrive in Colombia, then have relatively economical domestic phone service by purchasing minutes from a standard calling card vendor. The benefit of buying my own phone is, I will maintain the same number through out my one month stay in Colombia, and the phone will be mine to use through out Latin America, and possibly Eastern Europe and Thailand for furure mongering trips.

So if I understand this, then say in a six months, when I go to Brasil, I will need to purchase another SIM chip for say RIo which will allow me to make economical calls by purchasing minutes while in Rio. Or for that matter, Peru, or Europe and Thailand. Is that correct??

The phone number I obtain (I believe when I acquire the SIM chip in the country I am visiting) will be mine for a certain time frame as long as I am using the phone/chip. Question, is there a CERTAIN time frame of not using my GSM phone in Colombia that will run and preclude me from thereafter preserving that phone number (which I believe is programmed to my SIM chip) assigned to me. In other words, if I go back to Colombia (say three months later) will I have to purchase a NEW SIM chip?? Or, can I use the same (old) SIM chip and just have it reprogrammed (if the number is not branded to the chip)?? Or what?? How does that work??? Can someone please help me understand these techincal phone logistics. It confuses me.

Does Colombia Cartegena, Medellin, Bogota have DSL. In Rio, I happily paid to have a DSL line installed in rental apartments. I have also used pirate equipment (slipped in) that essentially uses Vonage to acguire a USA exchange number through internet. Though legally not considered appropriate there is no apparent way that the source country can be identified from it's internet signal through the USA exchange number. At least this is what I surmise.

Alternatively, with a simple $20-$30 rental of modem provided by Velox while I was in Rio, able to daisy chain my laptop between the moden and telephone and achieve unlimited access to internet in tandem with unlimited (free) USA phone service access. Though with the Velox set up, callers (that is customers and associates), other than my office, had to call and leave messages on my office number voice mail, and I had to call in, and retirive those messages frequently. The only alternative (I believe) would be to have receptionist give out my international (Velox apartment) number or Colombia cell number and thus call me directly. I prefer to have customers and associates think I am hard at work in my office. So if there is a way I could have calls rolled directly to my GSM phone in Colombia or my Velox phone service in the apartment then I would be very cool. The pirate equipment allowed Pacific NW clients to call a Seattle or LA exchange number and that was easy to explain, saying I was simply out of town for the moment. Ha, ha. Unless I want to boast to a few certain associates or clients about mongering while they are working!!

Generally I am able to simply daisy chain a answering machine between the phone and router and place an outgoing message on the machine to answer while I am busy mongering, but that is only useful to my office staff as they are essentially the only ones I want to know that I am out of the country and not behind my desk in Idaho.

Seems like the GSM phone should fit in here somehow, but I refuse to pay ATT $1.99 minute to recieve phone calls from USA to Latin America. This is a terrible quandry for me.

I really enjoy the challenge of maintaining a virtual office wherever I am mongering. My ultimately objective is to carry a Black Berry/phone and work (stocks and mortgages) while doing important mongering on beach, swimming pools, and coffee shops during the day, all with one little device. I basically wish to live and work for mongering, and two months a year outside of USA is just not enough!!

I know this email is convuluted, appologize for not editing, but if someone could advise me I would really appraciate some good techincial advise on this problem. Thanks and happy mongering. Z

Just my 2 Pesos.

phone numbers connected to SIM Cards (pay per minute) of fixed credit SIM cards : yes when not "reloaded" after a specific moment in time, your number is no longer "yours". It goes back into the pool of available numbers of the phone company. This is the case although in Thailand, where I had to buy a SECOND SIM CARD within 8 months time. the first number was no longer useable.

I do not know IF it will be suspended when there still would be credit left on the simcard when you leave back home and put it on rest. No can tell amigo !! Mine was completely emptied before I left.

There is always the possibility to give the sim card to a girfriend abroad, so she can use it from time to time. So you keep your number, she can reload the card, and you can use it again once back into town. There are (off course) also disadvantages .... as you know :-)

DSL exists in Colombia. I cannot tell more about it. sorry.

A good friend of mine who lives in Peru and manages a hedge fund travels to Columbia often (MDE). He brings his Vonnage phone with him and uses it in hotels in (MDE) without a problem. He has a Houston TX number that he keeps for clients. I am not familiar with Velox, so I can not comment.

I've been using the same SIM card for about 9 months now. I am back in Colombia about every three months. You do not need to reprogram it, just buy a new phone card anywhere and you're good to go. You may want to inquire at Comcel as to how long you can go without using the SIM before it will expire, I have heard that happens sometime. One thing to keep in mind, no one at Comcel (in Bocagrande) speaks any english that I know of, and I've been there three times. If you're not fluent, it'll be a struggle. PM me if you'd like a cheap translator to accompany you. Might be worth the 5-10 dollars extra...

I didn't use my Colombian cel phone for about 9 months ... just had to go by Comcel office and they did something to it in about 5 minutes it was ready to go again.

I believe they said 6 months was the cut off.

Wow what a responsive board!! Thanks Ricker, S2, LB, & COT.

I believe if I go to . . . say Rio . . . or say Thailand then I must buy a SIM chip there to have the cheap domestic calls. Or, can one single SIM chip be programmed with a new local calling number in each of these countries?

LB, the Vonage configuration is the only way I can see to make what I want to do somewhat practicle. I believe with the Vonage equipment (once it is connected through a DSL door) there is no way that Vonage can determine where the equipment is actually connected. So if I can get a Boise, Idaho, or Salt Lake City, or Seattle exchange number from Vonage, then when I make a call the recipient sees a Major city phone number on their caller ID. I give that number out and they may have to pay 5 cents a minute to call me but that is OK. I see that as the only practicle way I can be working in my apartment/office and send/recieve calls directly to and from USA. And the only way to keep a consistent USA mongering phone number. The alternative I supppose ($1.19-$1.99 per minute) is to have a GSM world phone but that is way expensive very quick.

My objective is simple, I want to be able to sit on the beach in South America or Asia, answering phone calls like I am at my desk in Idaho. Then tell them I am busy, will call them back in say one hour and then go back to my apartment call my office, or log onto my server and get the info I need, then place the calls without incurring extreme long distance fees and without my clients/associates knowing I am mongering myself into heaven. Until Vonage set's up an exchange in my home town and until I can figure out a way to roll my Vonage calls directly to an unlocked GSM phone in Colombia then I have to play like I am simply out of town on a small business trip and just use the Vonage voice mail box to handle incoming calls when I am on the beach or out of the apartment playing. I'll check with Vonage and let the board know what I have discovered but if I learn it is illegal to take Vonage equipment out of the USA then you will likely not be hearing much more about this Vonage configuration from me again.

Anyway I bought a set of Bushnel binoculars (8 x 30) yesterday at Best Buy for about $150.00 they are cool because they have a digital camera built in with standard camera memory card allowing me to snap 2.1 MP digital photos, (about 300 pictures) at a time, then pull the card out or USB them into my laptop. I can't wait to use them on the beach!!

I also bought an 80Gig small portable external hard drive at Costco for $100.00. Place to hold all the pics!! I plan on taking lots of pictures, not quite as obvious as a camera while outdoors and besides it will make me feel like I am a private dick doing mongering espionage for my fellow cuntryman.

I wish I could find a place in Cartegena that rents lighting equipment. Once I get a Colombiana in my room I can play like I am a professional photographer get her to do some hot and sexy model poses and perhaps inspire her to try harder and be nicer for more of a GFE for me. Hummmm, seems like I remember a monger saying he used that angle to get some quality talent. Oh well just a thought, actually I generally get way to busy with the quantity being what it is in South America. Nevertheless, shooting some porn does sound like fun. Geeez, I just know I should be a porn star, well at my age maybe the producer! Hummmm, no I'd still rather be the porn star!! Z

Check out argentinaprivate. Their is quite a bit of discussion about using Vonage in BA. What you are proposing seems doable and not violating any agreement. I did some research on their site and it seems like they actually encourage it.

I am not sure what the electrical situation is in Colombia but this seemed to be the only major issue that the guys were facing.

I always buy the girls OLA phones because they do not charge for incoming calls!

I had bought the Bushnell binocs with digital camera too but was underwhelmed by picture quality, capacity (bought expansion SD card but never worked!)

I was addicted to Colombia from my first visit for sure.

Contact Sunset of the Rio board for details about Vonage.

He is using it in Rio and it works fantastically.

All you need is a fast internet connection and the Vonage box.

As for GSM phones and cards the phone will function with a specific card as long as it supports the band that the sim card is using. eg 850, 900, 1800,1900 MHZ

There are motorola phones that they are able to function on all the above bands. Quatra band phones.
Others are using three, two or even only one band.

Pre paid sim cards expire after a certain time if they are not recharged with additional air time and you eventually loose the number.

My two cents for you

Of the three cell phone companies in Colombia - Ola, Comcel and Movistar - none charge for incoming calls. I have never used Ola, but I have used the other two. Comcel is better. The rates are always much better within a system. Most of the people I know use Comcel. It is much cheaper to call other Comcel numbers with my Comcel phone.

Read with interest about San Andres. Understand it is a very small place (the airport almost travels across the width of the island. As far as Cicas go, where to find them (massage, strip bars, escort service, local bars etc.), chica friendly hotels, do large hotels allow chicas to the room and the going rate for the same ? Do chicas from mainland Columbia fly in here for the mongers similar to S.J. Costa Rica ? All the good Columbian stuff available for sale I am sure. Anyone please advise any names\locations. Any local bars similar to the Blue Marlin in San Jose, Costa Rica ? Understand September\October rainy season. Anyone have experience with November weather. Appreciate anyone's advice on this.

Thank you.

Well these recent posts have cleared up a big mess in my head. Thanks mongers for turning me on to the Argentina link that Argentinaprivate link is a very useful resource.

Today I ordered Vonage. Since it is not available in Idaho yet, I set up a number in Colorado where I have some family. So they will be able to call me with no LD charges. And as for my phone calls I get 500 minutes per month included with my $20.00 per month subscription fee. Then it is 3.9 cents per minute thereafter. So esentially for $10.00 I buy the modem and the $40.00 activation fee now I can hook it up wherever I find a cable or DSL connection and basically stay on the phone for two or three hours a day and not be concerned about a HUGE phone bill. I am going to get rid of one of my home telephone numbers and replace it with my new Vonage phone number. The activation process took about 20 minutes with a nice sales rep.

I cancelled my order from ebay for a dual band (900 and 1900) GSM phone, hopefully I can get those $65.00 order reversed and get a four band GSM phone before I leave. That's what I should have ordered from the begginiing as to potentially include service for Asia, and Europe and I suppose all South America monger destinations. That was important info from NN and EG. Man I owe you guys!! Thanks.

It IS an issue to many, but it should be separate from the main discussion thread. Not a critique of the discussion, just a suggestion.

Tom: Maybe things have changed then, or maybe you have a different plan that does not charge for incoming calls, but I went to the Comcel office in Cali to ask about the rate plans and on the prepagado (prepaid calling card code) they told me incoming calls were charged. In addition, the per minute rate is MUCH lower, like 50%, of Comcel rates. ALL networks are much cheaper for calls to other network members so that is no advantage of Comcel at all.

Tom 33
11-03-05, 14:10
I think that there was a misunderstanding with Comcel. If they had ever charged for incoming calls, no one(including most chicas) could receive calls when they had no minutes. Most chicas I know never have any minutes, but I can always call them. No one would use Comcel if that were the case.

As far as the exact rates, they change regularly. Competition does work in Colombia. I'm guessing that the only substantial difference over time would be the discount you get for calling another number serviced by the same company you have. Thus, if most of the people you will be calling use Ola, get Ola.

How about the massage scene in San Andres? Any local bars where local ladies hang out. Any Chica friendly hotels, casas etc. Any experience with prices for services.

Thanx,

I hope to visit San Andres mid-end of November for one week, that is if feedback re S.A. mongering prospects look good. Are you going to Columbia mainland first, then picking up a hottie and flight from Medellin, Cali or whatever, and if so how much is the flight? I am also looking to go diving. There seems to be a lot of Dive Shops. tours on the Island. I'm sure the diving is great- weather permitting. For that reason, thinking of going on short notice after a clear weather forecast. As you know this is rainy season in the Carribean and this year has not been good at all. Anyway, Jackson was kind enough to start a new thread on San Andres. Maybe we should move our discussions in the future over there. Anyway, looking forward to other mongers input on San Andres, and who knows, maybe even start some sort of regular weekly meeting time\place down in S.A. to swap info, chicas? And other stuff.

My computer geek was in the office today setting up some stuff. He said he is getting (tomorrow) a broadband box that works anywhere in the world. So for about $150.00 I could buy the box (that uses a local number), and the cool thing about his box, it can be configured to work on a lap top and be a video phone at both ends. There is no monthly fee like there is with Vonage. I think that sounds cool as hell. In fact he says the box can also be configured to work as a wireless device (wherever there is a network connection) so like at the airport, coffee shop, hotel, I could make phone calls from my laptop/box though a little microphone and ear piece. That is a trip . . . I can't wait to go to his office and check it out.

I can really see myself doing business on a beach somewhere in the not too distant future. He thinks it's just a matter of time and cost (not long) before these devices are integrated in laptops. I LOVE this stuff!!! Almost as much as I love those gorgeous women who are amused by my nasty habits!! I hope I can live another 50 years, this just keeps getting better. Z

For what it's worth!
Be EXTRA CAREFUL at Cordoba Airport in Medellin!
Take this as First Hand Information.
Ladrones in Quanity are all over, Especially at Avianca Departures.
A stranger will tap you on the back, tell you in Espanol, you have Cream on your back (Actually Elmers Glue) show you, because he rubs your back and then proceeds to show you the cream. While he's doing that another Colombian, proceeds to ask you questions. They'll be persistent, maybe 10 -15 minutes. If you turn your head you've had it. It makes NO difference whether you have a "Baggage Man with a cart" or not. Your Bag or Bags are GONE ! They operate in Teams of three to four indivudals, A driver, most likely a waiting taxi and two to three Ladrones in the Airport itself.
There have been a rash of baggage thefts there. All by "Highly Experienced & Well Trained Gypsy Ladrones." November and December are High Theft Months . I've traveled the World for over forty years and NEVER had a problem up until now.

One of our twin engines failed about 45 minutes in the air out of Miami yesterday. We turned around spent the night at the Don Shula Hotel (Nice) and recieved one free RT ticket to anywhere Avianca flies (free) for the next year. That problem gave me an opportunity to chat with some interesting people. One extremely hot blond from Miami, I am pretty sure she's a hooker, (though she frequently referred to her fiance in Cartegena) I didn't buy it, we were hanging out together I don't know for certain but I did get a vibe from her that she was accustomed to close contact, I couldn't get her into my hotel room, though I believe her fiance story was a ruse, I gave it the old monger try. Also, met an attorney from Cartegena, her sister lives in Tennesee. She was interesting she also teaches English, otherwise the two of us wouldn't have much to say since my spanish is as yet, pretty much useless.

Met a fellow monger as we were waiting in the long slow lines, he recently bought a 2 bedrm in the same building I am staying. He and friend of his paid about 50K US for the 2 bedroom condo (about 1,000 sq ft) association dues about $65.00 per month. Just now came back from his apartment having a beer. Wow, great value and nice place for only 50K, on the street side but on the second floor with common pool and huge common deck right out his front door!! He comes here every few months to get a way from the USA. Anyway I am staying at Marinare building in Lequito, (just down the street from Hilton) per Juan Ventura. Nice modern apartment $55.00 per night. Though the HS internet not working that well with my Vonage equipment, calls are spotty as though the connection is too slow.

Took my new NEC quad band phone to Comcel this afternoon, bought SIM chip for about $20.00 and a bunch of minutes for about $100.00 which amounts to about 96 minutes of calling to the USA, or about 333 minutes to other Comcel cell phones in Colombia and about 175 minutes to other Colombia cell servers such as OLA. Hopefully I'll get this VOIP equipment working better so I can be on the phone and work here, playing like I am in the office deligently working, though actually deligently mongering.

My intial take on Cartegena is that it has deeper poverty than Copocabanna. I'll check out the monger talent tonight at LDV though my recent monger acquaintance said Monday is generally slow.

I'd just like to expound on my impression of the danger factor in Bogotá and Colombia in general, and how I think it compares to Central America and México.

First of all, Colombia is certainly one of the most dangerous countries in the world, and without a doubt the most violent in the entire hemisphere. They love war even more than we do. However, as is the case more times than not, people tend to take one or two examples and make them representative of a whole group. This isn't to say that crazy shit doesn't happen in Bogotá or elsewhere in Colombia because it does, but like most places, if you lay low and don't look for trouble, you won't find it.

For example, if you want to be the guy who rolls in Armani or other fancy duds and sports a Rolex-like watch, newfangled shoes, or any type of fancy jewelery, real or fake, you're just asking for it. If you want to be ostentatious or flamboyant, then you're going to get the attention you desire, not just from chicas, but from everyone, which means homeless vagabonds, gluesniffers, pandilleros, drunks, desperate taxistas, ect. And this is in addition to the attention you're automatically going to receive for being a foreigner, and there aren't a whole lot of them in Bogotá. If you've never been to a developing country, your best bet is to be modest. You don't need to pack the bling bling or wear easily identifiable designer duds to look good and put out the vibe. Moreover, if you think we're obsessed with brand names, imagine what people who live in poverty identify with Polo or Tommy, those hollow yet prodigious symbols of power and style? When you can't find gainful employment or put food on the table, the only chance you're going to have designer clothes is to steal them. They eat up American culture like we eat up the lies fed to us by our politicians. There's a reason all the school kids wear uniforms in these countries - because they used to mug and kill each other over Nike sneakers and Polo shirts when they were allowed to don them in the classroom.

Second, don't do stupid things. DON'T stay in a bad neighborhood just to save 20.000 pesos on a hotel. Don't go wandering around at night after slurping down a bottle of rum, especially if you're alone. Don't hop in an unmarked taxi or one with a passenger riding shotgun. Don't wander the streets with a travel guide in hand. And don't trust the dame you just met with great tits when she asks you to head out of town or to some distant local. Bottom line, do your research and just use common sense, and don't fear everything. God knows people do enough of that here in the US.

Sadly, I'm somewhat of a hypocrite, as I wandered around El Centro at night by myself without incident, and walked to and from the area around La Piscina and El Castillo to my hotel on 8 con 24 without any problems, but I also have friends from Colombia who told me the real deal before I went. In my opinion, Guatemala City, Tegucigalpa and San Salvador are WAY worse than Bogotá. Of course, I didn't go near the most notorious barrios in Bogotá, but that's because I'm not crazy. I wandered all over, especially in the daytime, but took more caution at night, and didn't go anywhere I didn't need to. It's just like Mexico City - stay within the limits outlined by the metro, don't be an ass, and you won't have any problems. (I know this sounds stupid, but when you're alone, walking briskly, looking kind-of mean, and appearing sure of where you're going has an effect on people.) I spent a month in Teguc under marshall law because of the gang problem, and heard gun shots EVERY night where I lived in Guatemala City, three blocks from the US embassy. The gang violence was all over, but if you knew where to stay away from, it wasn't a problem. From what I ascertained, there really aren't any big gang problems in Bogotá, at least not like Central America. I'm not recommending doing what I did, but I've spent years in Latin America and have seen much worse than Bogotá.

Anyway, as stated earlier, there are real problems in Colombia, but unlike Central America where the violence pervades the cities, it is the campo that is the real danger in Colombia, and many of the bus routes which traverse these regions. It is a Latin species of the Wild West for sure. But so long as you don't go wearing your best clothes or most expensive trinkets and gadgets, assuming you don't wander aimlessly into a bad neighborhood or some dive frequented by drunken mafiosos, there's no need to fear thieves, kidnappers or murderers - again, given that you know where not to go, especially at night. And of course, don't go hitting on a colombiano's chava or getting tough with the locals after having one too many, because they know better than you do how far away from home you are. Use the buddy system and respect local laws and customs!

When I arrived in Bogotá at 8:00 PM, I got through customs in 15 minutes, changed money, and was in a taxi driven by the most informative dude you could ask for five minutes later, who even took the circuitous route to give me a tour of the capital while pointing out landmarks and suggesting places to see, things to do, areas to avoid. It was great. And I didn't even know where I was staying my first night, though I'm glad I had done my research because they insist you give them the name of the hotel where you're staying. I utilized my taxista and found a nice place after discussing my options and explaining my game plan, got some eats and then hit the ground running. Bogotá es una ciudad bien vigilada. (I have to add that I didn't see a single American during five days in the capital, and very few Europeans, which made the nocturnal excursions all the more fun, as you can get the girls to vie for you if your game is good.)

Though I have read a few posts here relating some serious predicaments people have found themselves in down there, you should also realize that as far as a kidnapper or thief is concerned, if you look like you have money, you're going to be targeted. That's the deal anywhere. And if you stay in a five-star hotel, well, then you're a more appealing prize to someone who stays in a three-star joint. Hippie backpackers don't get kidnapped in Bogotá. Business men in suits and ties do. And as always, there is safety in numbers.

No need to wear sweatpants and baseball hats, just tone it down and keep it real and put on your charm. The chicas will smell what you're cooking and you'll have a blast. Do bring something warm though, it gets cold at night. And if you're fair-skinned, wear sunblock even on cloudy days, you'll be glad you did.

Party on.

Hello fellow mongerers,

I have some questions for the veterans of Columbia. I am so close to booking a trip to Bogota (my first time) for February 18-26, 2006.

I am in my mid-20s, Asian, and I speak fluent Spanish. I would like to think I am decent good-looking (by Asian standards) and have good game, too. I would be traveling alone because my friends prefer "safer" destinations. I have had great times in TJ and Rio, and I have already booked a trip to Buenos Aires in March 2006.

1. Would a week solely in Bogotá be too long for a first-timer? Would it be worth my time/money to stay maybe 4 days in Bogotá, and maybe booking a domestic flight to go to anther destination (e.g. Cali) for for 3 days? The reason is that the airfare roundtrip to Bogota is so much cheaper than any other city ($620 from midwest), and I looked into open jaw prices and multicity prices.

2. Is Columbia/Bogota affected much by Carnival (prices jacked up/overcrowding with tourists)? I would be traveling in the week before Ash Wednesday and leaving Sunday morning of the weekend before Ash Wednesday.

3. I've read that Sundays are pretty dead in Bogotá (actionwise and tourism stuff). I may potentially fly in on Saturday night. I am considering flying in on Sunday night... and starting fresh on Monday morning (with mongering/tourism stuff).

4. I did various searches and couldn't find an answer. I really like my BBBJs, is this service offered more often than not (like in Rio)?

5. Is getting a cell phone helpful/worthwhile (certainly very helpful, if not considered essential, in Rio)? I have unlocked GSM phones.

Thank you for any advice that you may be able to provide.

I looked at a multicity trip, and I could fly to another city (e.g. MDE, CTG) for an additional 25$. So this is close to a no-brainer, I believe.

flying in to BOG on Saturday/Sunday night
can fly to another city (MDE, CTG, and I'm open to other suggestions) on Tues / Wed / Thurs night. Fly back to USA on Sunday morning

I am leaning towards CTG because it'll be beach town, and I can hang/relax on the beach at least for a portion of my vacation.

I thought about going to Barranquilla for the other city, but I just thought it'll be too crazy/costly (weekend before Ash Wednesday/Carnival main weekend) for a first-timer to Columbia who is traveling alone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Lover,

I took the Invertours shuttle from Barranquilla to Cartagena last spring. It took a little over an hour.

Not only was it on time, but arrived 15 minutes early. Hotel door to hotel door for $25.

It gets you right through the traffic stops on the highway in no time, as the military is used to waving it through five times a day.

Plus, you can meet some interesting fellow travelers.

Definitely the way to go. Contact:

Wassup Fellow Mongers:

I am flying into Baq Friday but need to get to Cartagena. Can anyone shed some light on my options. Is there a shuttle, bus or should I take taxi? Please advise and how much I should pay. Also, how long is that ride if anyone knows?

Thanks.

These days TJ is more dangerous than big Colombian cities. My opinion is it is worth getting a cell phone. Because most of your questions are not sex related may I suggest posting on poorbuthappy.com forum (for non-sexual content). Lastly the country name is spelled Colombia.

1. Invertours costs COP25.000 each way, not $25, to and from BAQ to CTG, to and from BAQ to Santa Marta. Service is door to door, as stated. Last van leaves at 6:00 pm from each city.

2. Invertours no longer travels to Valledupar.

NOTE: They will take you to the BAQ airport from CTG for COP35.000. They drive you into BAQ along with the other passengers, then an Invertours taxi meets the van upon entry into BAQ to take you to the airport separately.

- They will not pick you up from the BAQ airport, as it's completely out of the way from the CTG-BAQ, BAQ-CTG route. They offer a private cab service from BAQ airport to CTG for COP150.000 (approx. cost of vanload of 6 to CTG). You will need to call to set that up. If you want the COP25.000 service, best bet is to catch a cab at the airport into the BAQ office (approx. COP20.000, then take the van service into CTG. Will take about 2 hours.

- Always call to make reservations at least 1 day ahead of your travel. They usually call whatever local/cellular # that you provide them to confirm on the day of travel.

- Everything's in Spanish. There are other services like this. In fact, many Colombians travel this way as opposed to taxis and buses as it's safer, more professional, more cost-efficient, more reliable, and more timely. I've never had an issue in over 10-15 times using Invertours over the past 2 years.

Recent military stop experience: On my last trip in Nov. 2005, we were pulled over by the military and they performed a complete search of everyone's bags and luggage. Everything on the up and up. Just increased scrutiny due to a major cocaine bust in the area. Our van driver was pretty known along that route, provided them with the passenger list. No harassment or anything. In fact, the 3 guys were very cordial and professional. 2 had family in the USA. It was actually funny watching as they COMPLETELY searched this older European couple's bags. Big ass panties, bras, and all. LOL!!! 15 minutes later, we were on our way.

Best wishes.

This is my first post, though I have been reading here for 2 months now. I was originally interested in going to the Ukraine or Poland, I have a closre friend in Warsaw, and as an 80s child, all things of the former USSR or "Evil Empire" fascinate me.

However I stumbled into this forum and read about all the varities of women in Colombia. So now I am planning a trip to BAQ for next Sep-Oct.

A few questions for the vets:

I love big breasts, but alas have never been able to bask in their glory up close. How abundant are large chests in Colombia?

I'm a pretty good looking guy who has no problems attracting women in my home town. So my main interest is looking for college girls who need a donation, etc. Good pickings?

Anyone have information on apartments for rent? I would like to stay for 2 weeks or so.

Thanks in advance and cheers!

I suggest you stick to Cartagena for your first trip, ESPECIALLY if your Spanish is not soild. The biggest danger you will face is a new addiction, especially if you like orgasmic women, as Latinas are light years ahead of ALL Asians in that regard. VERY few who know both well (and I have been to BOTH SE Asia and SA more than 10 times each) disagree. No gogo bars (well a couple with weakl stripo shows but NOTHING like in LOS or POI) or point and click stuff like in LOS or PI, but the passion is MORE than worth the sacrifice.

Tee Bone,

Although I am certainly not the Colombia expert Surfer is (having been there once for a couple of weeks recently), but as someone who has been to SEA before and has traveled extensively in Central/South America, I agree that for your first trip, Cartagena is your best bet since you can get by there without a lot of Spanish, while in other parts of Columbia, this may be dicey. I recently (December 9) wrote a detailed report in the Cartagena section, including things to do, excursions, the hotel I stayed at (and its girl friendliness), non-pros, pros, etc. Cartagena can easily keep you busy for a week, so I think there is no need to go anywhere else on a recon mission. Hope this is helpful for your upcoming trip.

If you studied spanish for 4 years, that should be enough to get you by!

Hell I only studied for 3 years and I was my own teacher! As long as you can say Cuanto para su puerta trasera? and Mucho dinero! 100,000 No mas Mami!

As far as apartments go Tom33, has listed a few just read back a few pages, and on the BAQ board Hoof Hunter listed about 40 or so Hotels for BAQ!

TeeBone,

You could do OK just staying in Cartagena that one week. Hanging out in the Laguito neighbourhood gets old pretty quickly though, so you would want to do some of the following for variety:

- Go out to the islands on a boat (nice clearwater Caribbean beaches, nothing like the Cartagena city beach which is below average).
- Date some non-pro (people report great success lining them up on cybercupido.com or amigos.com)
- See the tourist sites
- Walk around town, hit the shopping malls which are a good place for meeting people.

If you can extend that week to 9 or 10 days, try and do the trip to take in two weekends and the weekdays in between. Weeknights Monday - Wednesday are quiet in Cartagena (LDV is excellent 7 nights per week but variety is always good).

Never found any really good malls in CTG. Where do you suggest?

Surfer

You would never just stumble upon them in the normal tourist track between Laguito and la Ciudad Vieja. You WOULD find nice girls that would never think of hanging at LDV or Tripletera though. There are two large, plush, malls though the names of both escape me. Surely Tom or another CTG regular will know the names.

The big one is Centro Negocio de Castellaña(or something similar) in Barrio Castellaña. There is another one not far away from the big one.

I guess I'm a big slug. I can just hang out in Laguito and Bocagrande for months at a time. There is a very nice rotation of chicas that provides the variety. I do make it into centro on occasion to buy fresh flowers. I'm still waiting to get bored after three years.

I think I've been to that one, though the GF referred to it as "Vivero de la Castellana". The name is Centro Comercial Paseo de la Castellana on Av. Pedro de Heredia. It is a bit past the Plaza de Toros and the Real Cartagena soccer stadium at the Villa Olimpica, coming from Centro. This is definitely a long way from the center of the city and way off the usual Centro/Bocagrande/Laguito tourist circuit. Checking out the hotties there, though, was definitely worth the detour.

Here's a helpful website with tons of info (in Spanish only, though), including current cab rates to/from different parts of town: http://www.cartagenaonline.com/informa2.html. You might wanna check with both Avianca (www.avianca.com) and Copa Airlines (www.copaair.com). I know Avianca has a direct flight BOG to MEX, which they code-share with Mexicana. Copa, of course, routes via Panama City (PTY), and as far as I can see, they don't fly directly into Puerto Vallarta (Avianca doesn't either).

there are NOT beautiful women in every city in Colombia, that is TOTALLY untrue. OK, maybe there are a few, but most are not gonna get all hot and bothered just because a sweet talking gringo comes to town looking to get busy. Only in Cartagena and Medellin (really Poblado) does that happen, the only English friendly parts of Colombia (well San Andres too).

Really, it is primarily Robert and Greg that make Medellin so accesible to non Spanish speakers as not very many people outside THE most upscale businesses will speak much Ingles. Greg himself is proof, however, that one can still do quite well in Medellin even with minimal Spanish skills.

We really have two goals in mind for this vacation, obviously Chicas being number 1 but followed by the idea of having a good time partying, drinking, etc. Our plan is to stay at Greg's place in Medellin or Juan's penthouse in CTG. Should we do both? How would you split up the time? The beach is reaol appealing in CTG, but I think the Chicas are better in Medellin. BTW, we do not speak Spanish.

Colombian soccer player shot and killed

Associated Press

BOGOTA, Colombia - Elson Becerra, a forward on Colombia's national soccer team, was shot and killed along with a friend in a Cartagena discotheque, police said Monday.

The 27-year-old Becerra was dancing in a night club Sunday when attackers shot him four times, said Col. Mauricio Agudelo, police chief of Bolivar state.
Becerra and his friend, Alexander Rios apparently had an argument some days earlier with the unknown assailants who then came to the bar looking for them, the police chief said.

"The attackers were looking for a chance in the discotheque and in the middle of the music they committed the double crime," Agudelo said.
The suspects remain on the loose, but Agudelo said the police know who they are and expect arrests "at any moment."

Becerra played for Colombia when it won the Copa America in 2001 and played some games for the national team during World Cup 2006 qualifiers.
Most recently, Becerra had played for a team in the United Arab Emirates.
The striker often is remembered for trying to help Cameroon player Marc-Vivien Foe after he collapsed on the field during a Confederations Cup game in 2003. The Cameroon star later died.

It happened in La Boquilla which is north of Crespo(airport). That's the other direction from centro and a long way from Laguito/Bocagrande. I'm not sure of the name of the club, but I believe that it's the one I was at two different times right on the beach. It seemed safe enough to me.

Colombia without speaking spanish? Don't know if I'd recommend that...But if you're determined to do the trip, I would think you will need the mansion for sure. And Juan does speak english, but man, you will struggle when you don't have a translator with you. Just making it through the airport, dealing with taxis, etc.
Can be done though I suppose. Anyone else care to chime in?

Shadow,

Thank you for your insight. At first I was concerned about safety being two obvious gringos, but I think I am over that from what I have read it seems safe enough in Colombia. Now I guess my concern is how much are we going to struggle without speaking Spanish. Will it ruin our vacation? I do spend a good amount of time in Mexico but mostly in tourist locations, not knowing Spanish is not an issue.. But I am starting to feel that the lack of tourism in Colombia may really effect how much we will struggle down there. I do know that cruise ships drop people off in CTG and it does seem like tourism is somewhat present so maybe CTG won't be that bad for us? Will doing things like going through the airport really be aa problem for us? One thought we had was to stay at the Hilton instead of renting an apartment thinking that it may be more tourist friendly, just a better home base?

One thing I have to say though, is that we are young guys and are not afraid of a challenge, I just do not want to be miserable wishing we had gone to LOS. We both really dig Latin women and think this could be a great experience that we keep coming back for. Again any help guys would be appreciated.

Racer,

You've got to start somewhere, and Colombian Spanish is one of the easiest to understand in the world.

Obviously, you have some time since you haven't set your plans yet. Get a phrase book, buy some tapes or CD's and listen and repeat the words for half an hour twice a day, put Spanish subtitles on your TV and movies, and go for it!

You can even go to a place like Borders and pick up flash cards to build your vocabulary.

In the begin you can get by without learning all of the conjugations. It you say "salir" they know it means to leave. It might take a second for them to figure out if you are leaving or someone else is, but they will get it.

It is certainly better to speak bad Spanish than no Spanish at all.

The locals will love that you are trying and will be glad to help you.

My Spanish was virtually non-existent when I first visited Cartagena. I managed to muck through. I think you can do the same. You could probably manage in Medellin with Greg's driver picking you up. But Medellin might be a bit much.

I would suggest that you stay in an apartment in Laguito. You could contact Mery(recently listed on the CTG thread) or Juan Ventura(http://www.zepelion.com/apartamentos/index.htm). They both speak pretty good English.

I agree with Dodger. You have time before your trip, give yourself a cram course in spanish. Invest the time knowing you will need some basic spanish to enhance your trip. I'm not trying to discourage you, I just know from first-hand experience the difference between going to Costa Rica or more touristy locations, as opposed to Cartagena.
I started with the Pimsleur spanish tapes. Very easy to learn at least the basics. My spanish is still weak, but I'm always trying to work on it. CTG is the reason I make the effort.

Is it hard to understand how to calculate and spend COP since it is so small ?I forgot what resource/report I got this from, but it seems to work!

CP divided by two then take 10% off that

Example $100,000 CP Divided by 2 is $50.00 Minus 10% is $45.00

So i.e. $100,000 CP's is Roughly $45.00.

Easy right!

What options do you have to get from Cali to Armenia
How long does it take to get to Armenia (depending on the options)
If bus is the only option : where do you find busses going to Armenia ?
Do you travel to Armenia at "late" or very "early morning" hours ? Or only during daylight times ?

Thanks for feedback. If you go to main bus terminal a taxi will charge 21k cop/passenger so if you pay for four tickets (84k cop) you get it all to yourself. It is a very safe trip.

The Jan 11 promo for Luis was one thing, but let us HOPE it will not be repeated every three days (IMHO the january 14th post was WAY too soon to resume the spamming). Further, it contains Luis' email addres which is a violation of WSG rules. Don't know Luis, or anybody in Armenia (other than a lady met online), but I hate to see USEFUL CONTENT diluted by everybody spamming for "their" preferred guide.

........I of course, agree Surfer. You're right, posting emails is prohibited here and spamming does nothing but block up the board and distract us all from relevant content.

On a different note, did someone mention Armenia? I met a girl online from there and a chica named Lucianna (picture on Curacao board) in Curacao from there.

Anybody have any hotel/accomodation reccomendations from Armenia they care to post here?

thanks....

I usually like to take a few gifts for the chicas with me when I visit Colombia. One of the big suprises for me was how popular moving and singing stuffed animals are. For some reason I have never seen one in Colombia and either have the chicas.

To see what I am talking about go pay a visit to your local pharmacy. The Easter things are being put out now. Look at the stuffed animals and look for the ones that sing and move after you push a button.

I bought one last night on sale for $7.79. It is a pink and reddish color chicken. also comes in bright yellow. Push the button and the thing will dance and sings "lets do the chicken dance".

I do not know why but most Colombian chicas will go wild over the stupid chicken. I have been in a hotel where I will show the chicken to a chica at the reception desk. Next time by, she asked me to bring it back so her friends could see it and almost all of the female staff would be waiting for my return to see the chicken. Easy way to meet everyone. And of course everybody wanted it.

I have taken my chicken "amigo" with me to various places. Fast and easy way to meet the chicas. Only problem is figuring out who will receive the chicken as a present.

Hello, I am currently in Quito Ecuador, but will be leaving for Colombia in the near future, possibly as early as the end of this month. I RTFF but couldn't find any information on crossing the border from Ecuador into Colombia. What I would like to do is take a bus from Quito to Tulcan, cross the border on foot into Colombia, and then fly from a border town (Pasto or Ipiales? not sure) to Cali. Has anyone ever done this, or have any info on crossing the border into Colombia? I know the border area is dangerous, but from what I understand the Tulcan border crossing is one of the safer entry points. Also, which major city in Colombia has the least amount of gringo tourists, I'm assuming Cali, but maybe I am wrong? Thats the reason why I am interested in checking out Cali, and not somewhere like Cartagena or Medellin. Any info would be appreciated, hopefully I can contribute to the Colombia boards like I have to the Brasil and Ecuador boards!

E,

For the border question, you can probably find a good answer on http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com .

The major city with the least amount of tourists is probably Barranquilla (4th largest), followed by Cali (3rd largest). I don't know why you are concerned about that -- Colombia is not heavily touristed and there are enough honeys to go around.

Another gift that the chicas liked was nice-smelling lotion. I had some lotions that I snagged from a previous stay in Miami (small bottle of Bath & Bodyworks - with basil in it). The chicas all digged it, and I ended up giving away 1/2 full bottle of sample size lotion on a chicas demands of "regalame." I then went to the Olveido mall in Medellin to look for something like it, and there just wasn't much of a selection! Plus the import taxes made it significantly more expensive in the states (same thing I found on buying wine in Colombia - you're gonna pay much more for good bottle of wine in Colombia then in States or in Argentina). So if you need something practical (for the chicas line of work) and you want to feel a nice soft American strippers' skin in Colombia on your chica, that may be the way to go.

Peace out.

Dickfer (who has both of his hands on the keyboard at the moment).

your posts get very boring. I am sorry, but that is the truth. You did a service to the board by letting them know about Luis in Armenia. That was good information the FIRST TIME. By repeating it "casi" weekly, and on many of the different threads in the Colombian section, you are making people who might have used Luis, dislike him only for the reason that you continue to tout him.

You should probably think about making a point to post his information once a month, or once a quarter. Mongers are always asked to RTFF so your information will be there for the monger going to Armenia.

I know if and when I go to Armenia, I will look up Luis. If he knows the scene and the chicas, then he is a valuable tool for enhancing the pleasure of our hobby.

Please, think about this suggestion and try it. I bet your "popularity" increases! (and you won't make me and others put you on our ignore list)

Thanks,

Hi Bill.

I agree with you. LIP should keep quiet for a quite a while.
Some parts of LIP's info might be good. For instance: if I were to go to Armenia then why not get in touch with this Luis. He might be usefull.
But spamming around doesn't serve anything. Posting his info once every 2-3 months seems sufficient to me. Important to keep this forum clean.

One question for you Bill. Like you I have been to Cali. I also met Miguel and Gustavo.
Good information about this Miguel, because at first sight he doesn't seem very harmfull.
You also mentioned Gustavo, the porter of Don Jaime. You write that he is NOT on your good side anymore.
To me this Gustavo didn't seem such a bad guy. Maybe a bit slicky. Maybe you want to write what happened. I am curious about that.

Anyone know how hard it is to get residency status (even temporary) in Colombia? I have a Cuban friend who has been living in Mexico without papers. He's trying to get papers so he can apply for jobs in U.S. in the future. (Right now, without papers, the embargo still applies to him.)

But Jackson, in his wisdom, created separate folders for Peter (and Greg in Medellin too, whom I not to politely chastized for spilling over into the regular Medellin folder). I never urged your expulsion; I merely suggested that the CONTANT posting about Luis IN MULTIPLE FOLDERS had crossed the line.

Nothing personal. Rather, it is my inherent nature to speak out against abuses of the administrator's tolerance, be they friend or foe. So you are not the first, nor will you likely be the last, to be called to task for spamming by the self appointed SPAM monitor (moi)

Jack: Your friend is deluding himself if he thinks by getting residency in Colombia he will then get work in the US. A MUCH better solution would be for him to claim to be a political refugee from Fidel's private paradise in which case he will be received with open arms by the Miami mafia and their supporters in Tallahassee and DC (AKA the Brothers Bush).

U.S. Indicts 50 Leaders of Colombian Rebels in Cocaine Trafficking

By JUAN FORERO
Published: March 23, 2006

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, March 22 — A federal grand jury in Washington has indicted 50 commanders of Colombia's largest Marxist rebel group, accusing them of running an extensive cocaine trafficking cartel that protects its operations through widespread killings and intimidation, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales announced Wednesday.

The indictment accuses the group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, of being behind 50 percent of the world's cocaine trade and 60 percent of the cocaine exported to the United States.

"We believe these men are responsible for not only manufacturing and exporting devastating amounts of cocaine, but enforcing their criminal regime with violence," Mr. Gonzales said.

The practical impact is unclear, since 47 of the 50 commanders remain free in this vast country, leading thousands of fighters in the group's relentless effort to topple President Álvaro Uribe's government. Three are in Colombian custody, and the United States will seek their extradition, American officials said.

The indictment says rebel commanders ordered their fighters to shoot down crop dusters and to kidnap and kill American citizens, in an effort to dissuade policy makers in Washington from continuing to sponsor a fumigation campaign against the coca plant, from whose leaves cocaine is made.

Some charges in the document may be hard to prove, like those linking commanders to drug operations years ago when the rebel group was believed to be far less involved in the cocaine trade.

But high-ranking Colombian government officials interviewed in Bogotá on Wednesday welcomed the indictment, saying it demonstrated the Bush administration's long-term commitment to Mr. Uribe, the United States' closest ally in Latin America.

"We see this as a recognition of the clear relationship between terrorism and narcotrafficking," said Defense Minister Camilo Ospina. "This shows that a big decision has been made to carry out the final battle against narcotrafficking and terrorism."

The indictment came just days after a coalition of pro-government parties took control of Colombia's 268-member Congress, a decisive political victory for Mr. Uribe. The victory strengthens his chances of winning re-election in May and gives him the political leverage to follow through with his agenda, including aggressively fighting the rebel group with Colombia's Washington-backed army.

With billions of dollars in backing from the United States, Colombia has sprayed much of its drug-crop acreage and carried out army offensives against the rebels. The chief of the national police, Jorge Daniel Castro, said Wednesday in an interview that the group was "in a defensive position" as a result of the military offensives and the fumigation. "We're seeing that they don't have the capacity that they had before," he said.

But the group continues to control wide swaths of territory and has been increasingly active in neighboring Ecuador and Venezuela, where it operates camps for its fighters and traffics cocaine. The group also continues to attack civilians; last month, rebel commandos burst into a meeting in the town of Rivera, southwest of Bogotá, and gunned down nine council members.

Cynthia Arnson, a Colombia expert who is director of the Latin America program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, noted that it remained difficult to gauge whether the group had suffered big setbacks or had voluntarily withdrawn into the jungle. "This indictment," she said, "could be the beginning of an enormous political and diplomatic offensive to capitalize on whatever military momentum has been achieved."

Mr. Gonzales did not elaborate on what American officials would do to go after individual commanders but said that there were "effective options" and "they all remain on the table." The State Department said it would provide rewards of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrests of members of the rebel group's governing seven-member secretariat.

The leader of the group is Pedro Antonio Marín — better known by his nom de guerre, Manuel Marulanda — a former chicken farmer who first took up arms in the 1950's during Colombia's internecine political conflict of that era. He later helped found the rebel group, turning a peasant army into the richest, best-equipped Marxist insurgency in Latin America.

The indictment offers a look at how the group went from leveling taxes on farmers who grew coca to operating clandestine airstrips and helping to build an international cocaine distribution network. It also details the brutality used by the group to enforce its dominance of the drug trade. It says commanders ordered the killing of farmworkers who did not comply with the group's rules, in some cases dismembering them or filling their corpses with rocks and sinking them in rivers.

Well for a foreigner I´m not sure if you get booted out of the country or get treated like the locals. The Peruvians have to show up at the court office and sign a form every month and they can´t get drunk, or go to strip bars, etc. They also can´t leave the country. However, one is in jail until they sentence you which could be awhile. Depends on your ready cash situation.

It will take you a long time to figure the mind of any woman let alone a Latina!

I've had a few Novias in Colombia, and just this last year I starting to understand them a little! My current I met on Amiogs about a year ago! We talked two months before meeting, we did not started talking deeply about sex two weeks prior to us meeting even then it was like trying to pull teeth to get her to talk about sex! As a matter of fact with the exception of Brazil, every Good Girl that I have met in South America was the same way!

My Novia puts it like this, good girls to not talk about sex even to their husbands because they will look like putas! This is hopw bad it is I ask my girl would she like me to go down on her, she told me that a guy has never asked her what she wanted in bed! And pretty much the same thing with her friends! How fucking sad is that?

But trust me Colombianas fuck the same way they dance, and that is shaking that round, brown delicious ASS!

How can a date be more expensive? What are you going to most expensive restaurant in town and then drinking Dom or Cristal? And is she demanding you buy her clothes?
Dom or Cristal, WTF? Do you realise how far away from most Colombians' reality that is? I know you haven't been to Colombia yet but you've been to other countries that are not rich, right?

The guy said high maintenance, and that can mean other things besides money. If you date regular girls, you can tell from the get go they are available to you, but it will take time and attention. And sometimes, commitment.

Compare that with P4P, where it's very easy to fork over 60k or so and get a nice GFE experience with a great looking chick.

Anyway, the cost of dates does add up quickly, and is usually more than P4P. Of course, each person is different with what they like to spend on a date, you can spend absolutely no money if you want.

I was being over the top to see what was involved in an expensive date in Colombia.

Hi fellow mongers,

I have been wanting to go to Colombia for centuries now, but I am kind of afraid, all the things you hear on TV.

I usually go to Dominican Republic, never had a problem.

Is Cali a good place to start? Better Medellin? I don't even think about Bogota.

Actually I almost exclusively go for non-pros o semi-pros, what is the best place for that?

Any advice is very apreciated.

I have the same questions as Freedick. I am looking in going to the Mansion in Medellin. I think this is a good place to start. Does anybody have any suggestions for a first timer where to go. I like Non or Semi Pros. The type of girls that I like are like the girls I have pics here. Please let me know where to start.

Don't think about Cali, either. MDE is possible through the Mansion. You can pretty much wing it in CTG.

MDE is not safe for the first-timer unless you have help. It is not the place to make a mistake. Muggers have been known to kill. People are kidnapped and sold to the FARC. Taxi drivers rob people. Life is cheap in the poorer parts of town. Do you know which parts those are? Looks can be deceiving.

hi guys I would just like to say. It is very nice of you all to ad info on a site like this. I just wish I would of found this site sooner. I had already booked my flight to medellin on June 7 and I am staying at the mansion. But I was only travelling there hoping to meet a nice girl for a relationship. But after finding this site and reading for several hours, I have come to the conclusion since I don't speak spanish at all and also with the way that it sounds the girls are only there looking for money (working girls). I believe I have made a mistake in my choice of where to travel. Oh well I can usually have a good time anywhere doing anything, so I guess itll just be a trip filled with rain and wobbly pops. I wish I would of known more of these facts and the info on the mansion before I booked my flight. Oh well take care I'll fill you in on how it goes. You did not make the wrong choice. One of the perks of staying at he mansion is that you get one date per day with a girl of your choice from their Colombianloveconection site. These girls are non-pros and looking for serious relationships. You might want to do your homework on the site now and have a list of girls that your interested in. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. You guys are very helpfull. Any and all advice is very much appreciated. They are going to set me up with someone for spanish lessons at the mansion. I realize it takes a while to learn a new language but as long as I can compliment a lady and order a beer I'll be more than happy. I was thinking of signing up and taking spanish lessons on one of those online sites where you have a teacher one on one. But I think the best way to learn a second language is when you around people that speak the language on a regular basis and where I live there is very few spanish speaking people. The times I have travelled to latin countrys I've really enjoyed the way spanish people are so laid back and seem to always be happy and so very nice. Thats why I have been in love with spanish speaking and looking women all my life and I just got out of a long relationship a few months ago and have been dating a few women, but I find my self getting tired of the women in a america with the wild mood swings and demanding everything. I guess thats why they say" why does every bride have a smile on her face"? Because she knows shell never have to give head.

Fellow mates,

If I am not wrong, there aren't any meters in the cabs and I would have to negotiate a rate before getting in a cab. If that is true, then I got 2 problems.

(1) My first solo time to cartegena and I don't speak spanish.

(2) How would I negotiate if I don't know how much is reasonable. (Like going to LDV etc...)

Is there a way other then hiring a guide services? if No, then pls recommend guide services. I have heard horrible stories both of getting ripped off by cabies and guide services. Plz suggest.

Thanks

Has anybody ever been to the San Andres Island? If you have, how is the action. I did a google search of the place and look at the Image and section and the first I got was a web page with these beauties on it.
I read some past post and it seems to say that one should bring their own candy from the Columbian Mainland. Is this true? I have a sweet piece of candy and she wants to take me here? Should I go with her or should I go by myself.

there is apparently SOME action in San Andres, but numbers will be limited and prices high (I bring my own). Plus you will gain MAJOR points with just about ANY Colombiana by bringing her to San Andres leading to MAJOR GFE.

TRAVEL FROM SAN JOSE TO CARTAGENA OR ISLA SAN ANDRES CHEAP!
If you want to see Costa Rica AND Colombia, here's a tip:
A Tico friend pointed me to
www.destinostv.com

They often, but not always, have super-cheap charter flights and packages to Cartagena & Isla San Andres.

They charter a whole TACA jet a couple of times a week, and sell packages with hotel for much less than the airfare would cost you otherwise. The plane stops each way in Cartagena and Isla San Andres. You do pay airport tax coming and going CR and Colombia about $25 each. They also have some other interesting specials on the website to various destinations. Highly recommended. You have to pay with credit card or bank transfer, and you don't get your ticket til you get to the SJO airport, which made me nervous. But they have a stand right next to the TACA counter on days they do flights and everything went as smooth as butter. They handed me my boarding passes and vouchers. The "all-inclusive" hotel was right on the beach in San Andres, and had once been once, but was really run down (no hot water, phone broken) and the "all-inclusive" meant stale sandwiches and for some reason all you could drink OLD MILWAUKI beer, LOL, but heck it was virtually free. Isla San Andres is a beautiful tropical island which belongs to Colombia, very small, mostly black people who speak some English. No major action there, pretty much BYOG. VERY few gringos, mostly Colombians and Panamanians on vacation. completely safe they search the fuck out of you when you arrive to keep weapons off the island. Check it out.

ISLA SAN ANDRES
The photo posted by Cubanito is Johnny Cay Park, a small isle about a mile across, which is a few miles off of Isla San Andres. There is a small restaurant and bar, and lots of "private" white san beach there. Photo attached. You can hire a motorboat to take you there from the main beach on Isla San Andres, it takes about 10 minutes. and it really looks like something out of The Blue Lagoon. Nobody will care if you and your sweetheart do a nooner on the beach. What you will NOT find in Isla San Andres are hot girls, unless you bring them with you. The majority of the population of Isla San Andres is black Jamaican looking, descendants of slaves I guess, not to be racist, but the types of girls you seen in Medellin, Cali, etc. are not to be found in Isla San Andres unless you BRING them there. The Latin Colombian girls who vacation there usually come with their families and are from the wealthy classes, not much interested in YOU. There are a few discos, and a heck of a lot of shops, as this is apparently a duty free zone. Would be a fun, funky place to take a date, with the emphasis on FUNKY. The atmosphere is less Latino and more llaid-back Caribbean/Jamaican with lots of ganja, reggae music and stray dogs on the beach.

I just posted a report/update on San Andres in that thread. My bottom line was that if you were really into scuba diving and would like to monger a little on the side then go it alone. It can be fun. But bringing a poor Colombiana there is the way to go. This is totally different than they are used to in Colombia. It is totally different than the beaches in Panama.

Johnny Cay was great. We tied it in with a trip to a little sandbar they call Aquarium. This was a waste of time. Next trip I would find a boat that would take me directly there for a full day. Drinking beer and eating fresh fish right next to a beautiful beach. Great.

That pic you have is definitely at Johnny Cay. One of the little stands that the natives have. I do not they think anyone actually lives there. They come over in the morning and work for the day. I am sure that girl was brought over with someone.

I will try to sort out some travel pics the next few days.

I hope this explains to the people who are considering the pros and cons when it comes to living life abroad, specifically in Colombia.

When I retired a few years ago I discovered that for the most part, old people in the US are forced into doing old people things, generally with other old people. I knew I wanted more than that.

I had lived for the previous 15 years on a beautifully wooded ranch in a pretty rural area near Houston in Texas, but by the time I stopped work, it was surrounded by upscale subdivisions, shopping malls and Walmart.

Prior to my retirement, I had travelled much of Europe, Central and South America, and was always evaluating potential retirement locations. When I realized that my Company was going to force me into retirement (I love them for it), I spent a great deal of time surfing the net, reading articles, and trying to determine the real cost of living in various countries. It really is impossible unless you actually go to these places, and stay for at least three weeks. I went to Panama, Chile, (I really liked Chile), Costa Rica, Mexico (the colonial towns), Guatamala (yuk!), Spain, SE Asia and Canada. My eventual selection was based on family situation and climate. I am married to a Colombian and came to know Bogota really well through Christmas and other holiday visits. Although the city has a reputation for crime, drugs and violence, I felt that it was an exaggerated perception; there are many population centres in the United States that suffer just as much from these afflictions.

Bogota, also has, for me, the nicest weather. I had always hated the heat in Texas, along with the massive electricity bills that came with air conditioning. In comparison, Bogota's climate is spring-like every day of the year. Daytime temperatures average 68F deg. (19C), and at night it drops on to about 50Fdeg (10C). Perpetual fall, perfect for me. The city is at an elevation of approximately 9,000 feet and close to the equator. It sits in a large fertile valley with the Andes rising to the east. It is very green and covered with lush plants, flowers, and trees, mostly eucalyptus. The city itself has a cosmopolitan nature, equal, in my view to London, Toronto or Paris. Only a two hour drive to the west of Bogota is Medellin, known as Colombia's most beautiful city, a vibrant and modern centre again with a comfortable climate. But if you really like the heat you can take yourself on a 60 mile drive to Melgar, a small resort town where you can enjoy 100Fdeg.(35C) + heat and 100% humidity. For beach lovers, Santa Marta - a nice, and very cheap Caribbean beach resort is not far away a 5 star service for only $120 a night.

QUALITY OF LIFE:
While we may be looking for a place we can live more cheaply, most of us are not looking to reduce our creature comforts, nor the availability of the kind of things we enjoy doing. Supermarkets with products and brands we prefer. Quality health care. Theatres, movies, restaurants. For some, arts such as opera, ballet and symphony. Cable tv, broad band internet, hot water, and good water pressure. Bogota & Medellin have it all and generally at very affordable prices.

Big difference? The cultural attitude toward older people. Certainly, while there are good and bad people everywhere, those here tend to be noticeably more friendly and helpful. I believe I have made more friends here in a couple of years than I made my whole life in the US. We of the older generation are considered to be productive members of society. Parties and other social occasions include young and old and everything in between. People in Bogota tend to be well educated. In some ways, from a university stand point, it reminds me of Boston. There must be a hundred universities, some large and famous, with students from Europe and other South American countries. Although I believe the US university system to be the best in the world, I think the elementary education system in Colombia is better.

There is of course a lot of poverty here, as in many other South American countries, and indeed the rest of the world, but it seems to be more visible here. But there is also a very large middle class; the average income for professionals (engineers, accountants, lawyers, etc) is about $10,000 a year. It would appear that they live comfortably on that income, and while I am sure they have the same wants and needs as anybody, I get the impression that they live less stressful lives than their American counterparts earning five times the money.

COST OF LIVING:

Basically. some things are cheaper than the US, some more expensive.

Food and Clothing. Food and clothing cost are about the same here as they are in Houston. For myself and my wife (and the odd guest for dinner or a bar-b-q twice a month) our grocery bill is about $400 a month. But we eat only the best beef (rib eye), chicken breast, center cut pork chops, no bone, no fat, American brand cereals, etc.
Dinner Out. Much cheaper. Our favourite restaurant is La Fagrata. It is a truly five star restaurant in the International Trade Centre. A varied three course meal, with locally produced food, is about $50 for two including tip. The only thing not local is the wine! Colombian wine is probably the worst in the world, so we go for Chilean - French and Californian imports are too expensive.

Fast food restaurants (McDonalds) etc are about the same price here, maybe a little more expensive - hamburger, fries and a coke will set you back about $3.00. Local fast food restaurants, generally one in every block, serving rice and beans, or soup, or grilled chicken or beef, will only cost about $2.00.

Housing. For some strange reason there seems to be much more value for the rental dollar than the purchase dollar. I would not recommend any expatriot purchase a home anywhere until they have lived there at least a year. Cost, here in Bogota, is around $35 to $45 a square foot for good quality new construction; luxury construction is going to be more. You can rent a luxury apartment in the best neighborhoods for between $1,000 and $1,500 a month. In less exclusive areas rent is around $450 a month for a 2 bedroom, 2 ½ bath, modern apartment.

Transportation. Taxis are cheap, and there are thousands of them on the street all the time. You can rent them for $12,000 pesos an hour (about $5.00) or you can go from point to point anywhere in the city for $1.50 to $2.50. The rule of thumb is don't flag a taxi down in the street-there have been reported muggings so it is safest to book a taxi by phone from a reputable company or take one from the shopping malls where they have taxi stands and known drivers.

Buses go everywhere, they cost about 40 cents, but I have never learned the system or how to use them.

Car rental is not advisable. It is very expensive here, and you are liable for 20% of the car's value if stolen, or damaged, which is a real possibility. And driving is difficult especially if you don't know your way around. Find a driver you like and rent a taxi for the day - it will cost you about $35. Gasoline is about $2.50 a gallon.
New cars here generally are about 30% more expensive than in the US. That is basically the amount of import duty imposed by the government. But General Motors assembles some of their cars here in Colombia, and on those you can get more value for the dollar.

Furniture and Appliances. You can get custom made real wood furniture for about a third of the cost of fabricated real wood furniture in the US. There must be a thousand small furniture makers here in Bogota alone. The trick is to shop around and find the right one -basically the old adage applies – you get what you pay for!
Electrical appliances are readily available, more or less equal models that you find in the US - they cost about 20% more. Except that plasma tv's, plasma computer monitors, and computers are two to three times as much. If you can buy those in the US and bring them on the plane with you it is worth the extra baggage charge. - Article Continued Below -

Health Care. Bogota has plenty of highly skilled doctors in every specialty and hospitals of equal or better quality than the US. Many of the doctors have studied and done residency in both Europe and the US. In the hospitals there is a much greater ratio of nurses to patients and they are much more pleasant and attentive. Big plus - the cost is a fraction of the price of the same treatment in the states.

Examples of medical cost without insurance:
MRI of the head, neck and complete spinal cord in Houston $6,000: in Bogota $500. Dental root canal and crown in Houston $900: in Bogota $250.
Health Insurance. Here there are two kinds of health insurance: a national health insurance which is about $40 a month for myself and my wife, which you must purchase before you can buy private health insurance. There are several major companies that provide private coverage and each have affiliations with various hospitals and doctors, much like HMO's in the US. I have coverage with Colsantas which provides for the very best doctors and hospitals. For myself and my wife this runs a little less that $200 a month. It provides 100% coverage and very little hassle. When you have to go to the hospital you just hand them your ID card and they take you to your room. No hours in admissions, no stack of consent forms to sign.

Household Help. Maid $12 a day. Gardner $10. Skilled handyman does anything, electric, plumbing, etc. $25 a day plus materials.

Utilities. There are different levels of pricing. Each neighborhood is given a number from 1-6, they are called âœextractos You are probably not going to live in anything less than a 4. But for example if you live in a level 4 and use 500 kwh of electricity a month you bill is going to be about $50 a month, in a level 6 about $65 a month. Natural gas is very, very cheap. So if you can heat your hot water, and cook with natural gas you are way ahead of the game. We take lots of hot showers and have a large jucuzzi that probable take 70 gallons of hot water that we use once or twice a week, and we cook with natural gas. We live in a level 6 and our gas bill is about $25 a month. Electricity is approximately 9 cents a kwh. Our bill averages about $60 a month for a 2000 sq ft apt.

Water is relatively expensive here. The water bill includes garbage and is billed for a 2 month period. Our bill for water and garbage averages about $30 a month, but we use a lot of water.

Cable TV. There are primarily two providers here Direct TV, TV Cable Net. The latter is much better. The have a new and modern fiber optics deliver system and are ½ the price of Direct TV. Also if you have Cable Net installed they can provide excellent broad band internet service. Their price for cable tv is about $24 a month and the have a better channel selection than Direct tv. And you can have as many tv's on the system as you want for the same price. For $20 more a month you can get broad band internet service. Direct tv is about $50 a month, and then if you want DSL you are going to have to buy it from the phone company ETB for another $40 a month.

Telephone. Telephones can be expensive. You can get a plan for unlimited usage for local calls for about $25 a month. But the problem here in Colombia is that every, man woman and teen, has a mobile phone and the calling party pays for the call. So if you call someone on their mobile from your phone it may cost you as much as 20 cents a minute. It seems like nearly everyone we call is on a mobile, so our phone bill averages about $100 a month.

Long Distance to the US - through the local phone company, it is about 50 cents a minute, but if you have broad band internet, there a couple of companies that provide voice over service that works very well and is about 5 cents a minute.

Mobile Phone - Mobile calls average about 20 cents a minute. I have a monthly contract plan that gave me a free phone, and I get 100 minutes for about $20 a month, additional minutes are about 21 cents. My usage averages about $40 a month.

My general sense is that you can live a fairly elegant life style, with very little stress, for about $2,500 a month, (excluding travel and vacations). Without a car, you can probably live comfortably for a third less. If you have a reasonable retirement income you can literally live the life of Riley. Can you say that about living in the US?

MONGERING:
I think that has been covered very well here on the forum with the lists that have been submitted.

Jackson beat me to it, but this is a excellent report in a forum that has quickly become a joke!

Even though I currently live in SA, we are all comparison shopping as political change can cancel out even the best laid plans. Many of us never choose the country we live in, I find the country (Or the women of the country) actually choose us! My original plan was to look at CR, Colombia and possibly Argentina as my final resting place. This quickly changed when I met my Peruvian wife. I for one did not even have Peru on my radar. Coming from a large city (NYC) I did not realize how important it was to live in a similar sized city(Lima). I would strongly suggest that anyone contemplating a change of country take this into consideration.

You have encouraged me to write a similar report (If I may steal your format)for Lima and hopefully others will do so for their chosen cities.

Congrats on a great 1st report!

Hello together

I'm new in this forum.

I was in the past many times in Thailand (Phuket, Pattaya, Samui and BKK) as also in the Philippines (Manila City and Angeles City).

It looks like I get tired to fuck always Asian pussies and I need something new. So my opinion was to go to South America.

As I watched the pics from Colombia. I felt my decision it will be Colombia. The other country I liked would also be Brazil. But Colombia convince me. Amazing Womens there!

Now my questions are:

How dangerous it its in Colombia? I'm little bit affraid from that you know on hear many things. But thats why I want to ask you guys, who was already there several times and know that exactly. Maybe you can give me suggestions what to do and what not to no be in danger. Is it better to go alone or with a friend?

The other thing is: The women on the pics some ar prof. And the others? Just girls from the street? I mean just little bit talking and so on? I mean in Thailand evryone is ready to fuck with a little bit money or without. But how it is in Colombia I have no idea.

How much is the price for a night? Or short time and long time? What is usual? Just that I can compare approx. With Thailand par example. There usually I pay for LT 1000 THB and for ST 300-500 THB.

I'm happy to receive your suggestions

Sorry for my english mistakes I'm from SwitzerlandI have only been to Medellin two times so dont know of other areas in the country. In Medellin safety was very good. Everyone saids be careful of taxis and be aware. I think the safety issue is probably overhyped by media but keep your alertness up and remember you are in someone elses country, respect everyone. I would say taking a friend is a good idea, two are harder to get scammed.

Prices have been reported here. 200k for overnight is probably a generous deal, I have had some girls try to ask for more and others much less. Spanish is probably more needed in colombia and will make your trip more fun.

Overall I found Colombia NOT at all in your face with girls looking to go with you. Medellin seemed kind of small in the sense you probably would know all the spots and the girls in a couple of weeks.

If money isnt your concern Sao Paulo is fantastic, followed by Rio in my opinion. BBBJ is much more accected in Brazil and there are just a lot more girls in the profession so many nice clubs and different types of girls can be had. For me the 3 hour flight and cheap prices of Colombia made it appealing but from my experience the selection, reliable performance, and attitude towards sex that Brazilians have can not be beat. Best Luck

I have paid from 15K(US$6) to 150K for short time. In MDE the street girls are happy with 15 to 40K. In CTG it's 30 to 60K.

I hope this explains to the people who are considering the pros and cons when it comes to living life abroad, specifically in Colombia..........(Note: I truncated Straight Shooters post in the interest of forum aestheics. You can find it by scrolling down.)That's a great write up, Straight Shooter. Thank you for taking the time to write that. I'm new here, and I have to wonder why the Colombian section doesn't have a "Living In Colombia" category like ISG does for other countries. Maybe Jackson will start one. Your post would be the perfect first entry for a catergory titled, "Living In Colombia." Thanks again, SS.

The women in Colombia IMHO appear to be some of the best looking women on this site. It does make you think hard about living there, at least for a year or so. However, I have read that Medellin and Bogota are boring places to live.

Maybe I need to do more research on those two cities and I'll continue to do that. I'm living in San Diego, California right now, and eventually I want to move to another country. The women in Rio are at the top of my list but life there revolves around the beach scene and I've had enough of that living in San Diego.

Buenos Aires looks real good 'cause I like big cities and they say that city is sort of like the Paris of South America. If you live in Buenos Aires you could always get on a plane and fly to Colombia for 500 bucks or so.

Most people on this board would probably share your opinion! Colombia is a beautiful country but they roll up the streets at night. Bogota is far more cosmopolitan than MDE but the top 3 cities to live in my opinion would be Sao Paulo/BA and Lima. SP for women,BA for nightlife/steak,Lima for nightlife/women/cuisine and climate.

But if you are only staying for a year or two why choose? I would plan out the seasons and spend 3 months in all three and then decide where you liked it best!

Hey there,

I'll be making my 5th trip to Colombia soon. Each time previously I've found there's been loads of dead time, where I've been looking for things to do. This time I thought it might be an idea to hook up with a few regular (not too regular though) girls to get to know the local area, plus extras if I'm lucky.

Any experiences or advice to share on this area?

Any recommendations for specific dating agencies/sites?

I see people have from time to time mentioned Yahoo! or MSN, but how does that work? As far as I can tell each of these is affiliated with match.com, but I'm probably missing a trick.

I am probably the youngest man here. I have read and heard some nice things about the wome from Colombia. I was planning to go on a down there soon and probably meet some women. If I like it I might just live there a few months I prefer non-pros (but I will take a pro if I see a few i like) . My main problem is my age. I realise there is alot of talk about colombianas liking older men, but what about young men like myself, Is my age going to be a problem?

Hopefully you are over 21, handsome and speak good spanish. In all LA countries it is accepted for younger women to be with older men. It is a little different with a Gringo as then the girl is labeled a Ho. The reason many seek the older guy is for security. For fun all women the world over prefer men around there own age or for women over 30 a younger guy. Don't sweat it and have fun.

People believe what they want to. A lot of this is "Latinas liking older men" shit is pure bullshit. Trust me. Those dudes reconcile themselves with being the bank to those chicas. I speak Spanish, I speak to women under 30 and over 30 yr old on a regular basis. It's the same. They DON'T prefer older men, they just tolerate them. They just want a man who can provide security to her, her children, and her extended family. A lot of guys here confuse things, maybe purposefully, with reality. Speak with any non-pro Latina, without any sexual intentions. She'll tell you the same. If you marry her, of course, Latinas generally take their vows more serious, esp if she is even just a little religious. Just be 100% straight up with her. She'll hang in there with you.

If you speak Spanish, just meet a young chick in your age range with no children and watch. It really won't be hard to have to beat them off with a stick, esp. if you look decent and have manners. Even better, meet some Colombian dudes in your age range. More than likely, one of them will speak some English. He will be your sympathetic dude. He'll be the one to take care of you (with regards to not getting robbed and meeting honest chicas). They WILL bring you to the type of chicks you want.

The older dudes won't get this type of experience. They SHOULD always be jaded. I go to Colombia often. Just got back last week. I never made an attempt to contact any local mongers. My preference. My local male friends are approx. 10 yrs younger than me (I'm in my mid 30s), really cool middle-class professional dudes. They make it a point to find the best non-pro chicas that they know, and introduce me. Their girlfriends do the same. Why? I treat them all with the utmost respect. Money DOESN'T mean shit with them (remember there are plenty of major narcos around). It's a win-win thing. They get local respect for knowing a cool American. I get the bill, sometimes. No problems at all paying $40-50USD for 3 hours of drinking, for 6-8 people. But I also get to meet the cream of the crop locally. No guarantees on what happens next, but generally I haven't been disappointed very often.

he apparently has some special insight into the inner desires of every colombiana. imho, colombianas are more diverse in desires than his post would lead you to believe. yes there are some jovencitas who will hang with abuelitos for the pesos but prefer jovenes, but there are also a fair number who genuinely prefer more mature guys. shit eating grin emoticon (i am middle aged but look younger). age preference runs the full spectrum in colombia, unlike in the wasteland where (because of our femanazi taught culture) any young babe going for an older guy is belittled for having a [CodeWord901] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord901) complex.

just as some colombianas prefer colombianos but will hang with certain extranjeros, while other colombianas absolutely will not date colombianos (aka machistas), there is a whole spectrum of preference.

Having a beautiful Latin (Peruvian)wife less than 1/2 my age, I can say you both are correct. Her girlfriends,my wife and I often have this discussion. One of her girlfriends (a lawyer) will only date wealthy and "Married" peruvians twice her age. Another (also 25) would only date peruvian gangbangers who were 17/18.

The second one is now in love with my American friend who is 32 and middle class.

My wife comes from a poor but proud family and appreciates every thing I do for her and her family. I know she loves me for me and except for the fact that I can't drink beer and dance Salsa till 8.00 am, has no hangups about my age.

Her girlfriends are more interested in the "sexual" aspects of our relationship than the financial. (We Americans are percieved as lousy lovers).

I also have many "gringo" and Peruvian friends in their early 20's and my wife has absolutly no interest in them. On the reverse side there girlfriends do not seem to be interested in me!

As a general rule of thumb "I have found in my experience" that 40 is indeed the magic number and almost all girls fantasize about experiencing a May-December romance. I can say this based on my experience as 40 for me was over a decade ago! SHIT EATING GRIN 52 Y/0 W 24 YO WIFE EMOTICON.

Another point, Not a day goes by that 2-4 good looking adolescents either flirt with me (in a grocery store etc) or give me the (come hither) look on the street in front of their young boyfriends.

I also tend to get it from the (young northern european types)as well. I can also tell you the other 6,999,996 women in Lima seem to pass by without a glance.

This is where Surfer's diversity in desires theory wins out. Regardless of your age, looks, personality, finances there is always a segment of the female population that finds you desireable and the only trick is finding them!

Enigma, your age is no problem. If you can speak Spanish and be a little charming, they will come.

Even if you can't do the above, they will still come. You just have to work a little harder and be less particular about the quality.

As a foreigner, there will be people who try and take advantage of you. This may not be simple to spot at first. Anyway, I would just suggest you be alert for it. You will meet a lot of genuinely nice, heart-warming people in Colombia, but just be conscious of peoples' motives and try and screen out the ones who are not.

Oh, and when I say taking advantage, I'm not talking about anything too awful. Usually just vivos trying to separate you from a bit of cash, or hook up with your girl.

Well, I also visit Colombia quite frequently as well as Venezuela ... I'm usually in South America at least 3 nights a week ... I've been down there for over 10 years now and I have muchos amigos (friends) also ... both men and women.

My take on the "age difference" question with these Latinas is like that of SURFER.
They all do not think the same.

Some of the chicas dig the guys their own age and some dig the older guys.
One of the reasons I hear for why they like an older guy is that they are perceived as being more faithful, more loving, and obviously more experienced at many things.

Yes, of course, in many cases, sure it has to do with the financial stability of an older guy; but to say that the "Latinas liking older men" is pure bullshit ... is in itself BS ... IMHO.
It's a well known facet of the latin culture.

Hoof Hunter is right on the money when he talks of treating people with respect and being decent. This, as well as, at least attempting to speak spanish, goes a long long way.

Hey Guys,

Appears it may be time to share a little wisdom. We have all made mistakes, it would be wonderful to be the exception and hit it off forever with a cute little Pisa (spelling?).

Having stated the above I have discovered, and wish to share three good points.

1. The concept of Love is universal, based soley on the female appreciation of the dollar bill. (from a friend of mine here in Kentucky)

2. If it flys, floats or fucks, rent it! ( read long ago on CH)

3. FIRST LAW OF MONGERING: We give them money for sex. We do this with multiple women.

SECOND LAW OF MONGERING: They rent their bodies for money. They do this with multiple men.

THIRD LAW OF MONGERING: The first two laws cannot be suspended.(from Jjgettis)

Just trying to help everyone keep things in perspective.

T-41 days here. Now here is the shit kicker: Yea is he who can heed one's own advise!

Damn, sounding biblical.

Well, I will go to them first.

A few years back, some Colombians who lived in CTG told me about an english speaking dentist that was supposed to be very good and very reasonable. At the time they told me that a gringo could get service 24 hours a day. I will ask around when I am down there and see if I can find out who this wonder dentist is.

I'm mostly looking for GFE, but if its going to be strictly business then I'd prefer an anal friendly location.

Any suggestions? I'm leaning to Colombia and would appreciate suggestion for which is the best city for non-Spanish speakers. BTW, I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese.

To answer your question Brazil vs Colombia, either one is good. If it's your first time, I'd say Rio de Janeiro, you can never go wrong there. Just do the Termas hopping during the day i.e. Centaurus, 4x4, 65, Monte Carlo, Solarium and hit Help or Barbarrela at night. Either one you will get GFE if you treat them right. Everyone should not miss out on experiencing Rio at least once.
