All sounds fine:
Airport cab 70 k (24 $) - assuming it is flat rate, and these take cash only. So will have to use ATM at Airport, shouldn't be an issue. There is some mention of shared taxis. Is that a practical option?
Distance to airport is indicated as 10-12 miles, so 24 $ is not exactly cheap, but whatever.
Local Cabs - 5/6 K - 2 $ - Great. Assuming it is cash. Will carry cash bills. What kind of bills do have here: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50,100?
15 K /5 $ SIM would hopefully get you thru a week? Yes Int'l plans are costly- especially AT&T. I earlier had TMobile, it included Int'l data and text (but no voice) - Text and WhatsApp would work fine, but other data (incl Uber) would be crappy. So any local vendor for would be fine? Claro is indicated as good provider?

Sam.Shared taxis from the airport is not a viable option. You have to wait for two or three other people to share the ride with. Another option is the bus. It will take you to Medellin for 9,500. Then you can get a taxi to Poblado from the bus stop for about 10,000. If you decide to take the bus, ask which bus goes to San Diego. Travel time to / from the airport is 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. So 70,000 is not bad because that includes the toll.
Bill denominations are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 K. There are few 1 K bills because they are being replaced by a coin. Try to get small bills. From the ATM's, you don't have a choice. You will get mostly 50 K bills. Taxi drivers and local restaurants will probably not have change for a 50. In and around Medellin, most ATM's are attached to a bank. After getting the 50's from the ATM, go inside the bank and change some of the 50's for smaller bills. Most restaurants around Parque Lleras can give you change from a 50.
The minutes / data you get with the sim card will probably not last a week. You can recharge it for any amount you want. Claro is probably the largest carrier, but any of them are good.

Would love to return but only if I spoke Spanish. It's not too much problem with the girls but mostly everywhere else e. G shopping, ordering food etc.
The people are lovely and try their best to help but I felt ignorant.
The women are amazing, I've been to Thailand over 10 times and the Colombian women blow them out of the water although I still prefer Thailand due to the language and fact everything is in your face, especially Pattaya.
Really glad I came here though and hope to return in the future.

It won't be your cheapest option, but you're unlikely to find anything with comparable internet. After fighting for months with 1.5-3 Mbps speeds in Medellin, I know how unreliable the standard internet can be.Thanks for the intel. I have msg 20+ airbnb in both laurales and poblado and the internet situation in mde is definitely crap. Its mostly 10 mb down and 2 up on a shared WiFi only. I've found 2 or 3 that actually have modems and dedicated lines to their apartment and they are emphatically visitor friendly. I got some hilarious responses from some jokers when I asked if I can have visitors.

What he did was, he signed the amended law called "Codigo Nacional de Policia why Convivencia". You can find the original from 2016 here https://www.policia.gov.co/sites/default/files/ley-1801-codigo-nacional-policia-convivencia.pdf.
The 120 pages long document stipulates how the people should behave in public places and what corrective actions the police should take, if necessary. The new degree gives the police the right to search you, seize and destroy your drugs, even if the amount is within the legal limits. Violating this law is a misdemeanor and not a felony with a fine up to COP 208,000. If you carry a certificate from your doctor that you are a drug addict, they have to give you your drugs back. What you do in a private place like your home is none of their business. Of course, like YippieKayay has said many times, the police may abuse their power and take you handcuffed to the local jail.

Oil.Yesterday, I was looking at some commodity & currency charts. Several of them (Euro, Oil, USD, etc.) were at inflection points. Today, USD & Oil down big and Euro / Other Currencies & Precious metals up big. Eyeballing the chart, COP: USD looked like it had broken above the upward channel that started mid May. The top of the channel looks like it is around 3180. Maybe this is a backtest to the top of the channel or maybe it is the start of a larger correction. Since oil has clearly broken down, I like the odds of the USD: COP drop being a simple backtest. We shall see.
I have been to Thailand and want to go to Colombia next. I want to be reading up on here. Is Bogota where I should go? Pattaya is the best place for a first timer in Thailand. Does Colombia have a similar best place?

Thanks.I haven't been to Cartegena but its a beach town, tourist friendly, and might be the closest parallel to Pattaya. It is also said to be twice as expensive. I've only been to Medellin and in the past two months, Bogota. Medellin is rather entry level, because they are used to foreigners and there is much info about it here and other places. However, the popularity may be working against it. Bogota is a bit more of a challenge being a larger city, yet it doesn't see many gringos. If you are an experienced, confident monger you might want to hit Bogota from the beginning. But, the options for punting are more numerous and I felt there is more to do in Bogota. Fair warning, there isn't as much to do as in Thailand and the food is really bland and unexciting.
A few other things to know about Colombia. First off, English is not widely spoken, so try to learn some basic Spanish. Secondly, the Colombians are truly nice people, but safety is a concern there whereas you don't need to give it too much thought in Thailand. Thirdly, if you like pretty Latinas in a variety of skin tones, you will be going to the right place! PM if you have other questions.

You're going to get 3 different answers. All 3 are correct from the perspective of the person giving the answer.
The answers are Cartagena, Medellin and Bogota. All of these are the best place in Colombia for a first timer. Which one is best for you, you'll need to decide.
Each city requires a different approach and has different offerings.

So yeah COP will break through 3100 at some point and more.COP has been above 3100 since Oct 24. COP fluctuates up and down. In Feb 2016, it was above 3400. In April 2018, it was just above 2700. Since mid 2015, it has hovered close to 3000.
Definitely not an ideal time for what you want.

Any tips, on how to organize something like this are welcome.
Hotel: Stayed in El Poblado area. Pablado Plaza and Dunn Carlton. Both are good hotels with good locations- everything in walking distance, friendly staff. Pablado Plaza is better- friendlier staff, even though English is an issue. Chica friendly? If you book a double room they will not charge extra else they will.
SIM Card: Got a local SIM card at nearby mall. 20 K - 2 GB with 30 days talk. For some reason the text was not working. But overall it was fine.
Taxi: Was approached by some driver at Airport, I suppose he was moonlighting. Charged me 60 K. Dropped me to the hotel. Called him back for return to airport also. The going rate is 70 K, hotels can arrange taxi for 75 K.
Overall Local Taxis are cheap and easily available, I think minm is 5 K. Most trip are less than 10 K (~3 $) - so looking for Uber etc is not necessary. Peak hours traffic can be bad, and taxis hard to find.
ATM: At airport money exchange were only paying 2260/$ - crazy price. Used the BBVA ATM. It is slightly further down beyond the Banco Col ATM. And at least for me there was no commission, and excellent rate 3160. El Poblado has lot of foreign bank ATMs. BBVA, Citi, Scotia etc. They have best chance for no / low commission (and good rate). Banco Col charge 13 K commission (I think it is per transaction) - sort of high, and also not best rate.
ATMs always give you best rate, much better than CC, and of course lot better than cash exchange. In mall cash was at 2850 (so lot better than Airport).
Tourism: Not a whole lot going on. Graffiti- Meh, Sculputura in Centro- OK, Museum- Ok. Took a outside trip Guatape- it is nice (80 K bus tour all day + BF & Lunch).
Local stuff / restaurants- Paruqe lleras (in El Poblado), Parque Laureles. Lots of restaurants / bars- prices are avg. (and lots of SWs in Paruqe lleras).
Was there during Halloween - this is Very big in Colombia.
Mongering: So So- Opinions vary, YMMV, it is legal. Lots of options- Strip Clubs, 'Casas', Massage Places, SWs, etc; Prices (and quality and service) widely vary - 50 K - 300 K. Overall safe and hassle free.
Security / Safety: I never felt insecure or felt was being scammed or anything. But I stayed away from questionable areas like Centro after dark (as suggested). Discretion and caution is always advised, but overall security/safety does not seem to be an issue.
Language: This is a serious issue, 99.9% people don't know a word of English, Google translate is only way out. It is good but can only do that much.

- For the girls, I'm mainly comparing Pattaya, Angeles, and Santa Fe / El Centro / Casas / Mid level strip joints. I've never picked up in the high end strip joints in Bogota or Medellin. For the exchange rate, I've used today's rate at $1=3200 COP=32.9 Baht=52.33 pesos. All this is from my memory, and limited exposure. Prices will vary. YMMV.
- Prices for marginal girls on Pattaya Beach Road is around 800 Baht ($24) for 1 hour. It's 35 K Mil ($10.64) for 30 minutes for some casas. Prices in Santa Fe is 40 K Mil ($12.50) for 20 minutes. I paid 100 K ($31) for 1 hour. Probably can get it cheaper. In the lower end, prices seem to be similar per minute. But if you want a quickie, Colombia can be very cheap for a large selection of girls.
- A larger selection of SWs is available in Santa Fe than Beach Road.
- I cannot find diamonds in the rough on Pattaya Beach Road, unless I lower my standards. Easy to find decent looking girls in Santa Fe and El Centro.
- Prices of Walking Street Go-Go girls in Angeles is around 3500 pesos ($67) for short time or long time (depending on the girl). Few cute girls, many slightly above average girls. Prices of almost top end Walking Street Go-Go girls (Palace or Tantra) is 5000 baht ($152) for short time and 7000 baht ($213) for long time. Prices for Soi 6 girls is around 1400 baht ($43) for 1 hour; most girls are average, some above average, few are cute who are hard to find.
- Not sure about the prices for the upper end strippers in Bogota. Maybe $100 and up for short time. I once went to a strip club in Zona T. It sucked. No girls dancing, few girls, expensive beers. In that Cartagena Strip Joint inside the walled city, the girl was around $100 for 1 hour plus the cost of the short time room.
- Way more selection of girls in the Go-Go bars of Pattaya / Angeles than the Strip Joints of Bogota.
- Way more fun in Pattaya's strip joints than Bogota's. In Pattaya, there are tons of girls on stage dancing totally naked. In Colombia, there might be 1 or 2 dancing on stage. They just dance, and then they get naked for a brief time at the end. Plus there are long stretches of time where there is nobody on stage. In Angeles, the girls are in bikinis, but around half the girls are continuously on stage.
- It seems easier to find girls in Colombia willing to do lesbian shows compared to Pattaya and Angeles.
- Seems Colombians are willing to do more for tips than Thais.
- Fantastic monger tools for Colombia. Nothing for Thailand or the Philippines, except for RTFF.
- Many girls in Angeles speak English very well. Generally, Thai girls speak more English than Colombians. Most Colombians don't speak English.
- Cheaper bottle beer prices in Colombia; Philippines is similar, maybe a few cents more; Thailand can get expensive. 7 Mil ($2.19) at the Trop, 125 pesos ($2.39) at Atlantis, 160 baht ($4.86) at a Thai go-go bar.
- Cheaper prices for food at the mid-upper level restaurants in Colombia than Thailand and Philippines. It can be a third of the cost compared to the US. Better variety of food in Thailand. The food at the nice restaurants in Colombia is good. Good fusion. Local Colombia meal of the day is cheap, but too hearty for me (too much potatoes). General quality of the food in the Philippines is lacking.
- Safest out of the three is Thailand.
- Pattaya is the worst for over crowding.
- Least rejections in Colombia.
- On average, Colombians give the worst BJs out of the three.
- Colombia has the best overall weather.
- Colombia has the best tolerance for drugs.

On Youtube a Colombia women talked about how they spot foreigners. She mentioned foreigners wear shorts and sandals in public. Colombians usually only wear shorts and sandals at home or at the beach. I am used to the Philippines and Thailand and wear shorts all but 4 months out of the year in my country. Most the Youtube videos in Medellin where I wish to visit showed guys everywhere almost always wearing pants.
Being noticed as a foreigner can be both good (bad girls know to approach you) and bad (street beggars come running). All that I am used to.
The problem is my lack of understanding as to where this is a problem. Most countries you do not wear shorts to church or a middle class family restaurant and never a hat. I do not mind being noticed as a foreigner. But I do not want to be noticed as the asshole wearing shorts and sandals where he should not. Is it considered just silly looking or is it disrespectful of their culture?
Wearing shorts / sandals and picking up street walkers should not be a problem. Going to a disco, most sit down restaurants, or walking the Parque Lleras area at night would all be big no-nos I would assume.
Would it bring unwanted attention to a Prepagos girl from her neighbors if I wore shorts and sandals to our meeting at her place? True her neighbors probably know what is happening when guys visit all the time but no reason to flaunt I am a foreigner hooking up with her. I do not want to embarrass her. No need to start off on the wrong foot.

In Medellin most people don't wear shorts and sandals because the climate isn't one where shorts and sandals are appropriate. Daily high temperature is 80-85° F, nightly lows are 56-62° F and humidity is low. If it's rainy, don't expect higher than 76° daytime.
Except during ciclovia (look it up), when I was riding my bike or walking for exercise, I wore jeans. Jeans are comfortable. Jeans are appropriate for every place I went or every function I attended. Jeans and sensible shoes made walking comfortable and people didn't notice from a block away that a foreigner was coming down the street. I took a guy wearing shorts for a walk through the streetwalkers in El Centro. One of them was very aggressive with him, grabbing at his pants. I walked those streets hundreds of times and never had anyone get that aggressive.
If you're interested in going to Medellin to pay for sex, you probably don't need to worry about being disrespectful to the culture by wearing shorts and sandals. It's a friendly city and most people will just assume that you don't know any better. There will be a few people who will be very happy to see you wearing shorts and sandals. However, I would be careful with them. Chances are, they just see you as an easy target.

The problem is my lack of understanding as to where this is a problem. Most countries you do not wear shorts to church or a middle class family restaurant and never a hat. I do not mind being noticed as a foreigner. But I do not want to be noticed as the asshole wearing shorts and sandals where he should not. Is it considered just silly looking or is it disrespectful of their culture?
Wearing shorts / sandals and picking up street walkers should not be a problem. Going to a disco, most sit down restaurants, or walking the Parque Lleras area at night would all be big no-nos I would assume.
Would it bring unwanted attention to a Prepagos girl from her neighbors if I wore shorts and sandals to our meeting at her place? True her neighbors probably know what is happening when guys visit all the time but no reason to flaunt I am a foreigner hooking up with her. I do not want to embarrass her. No need to start off on the wrong foot.
All the guys appear to wear blue jeans only. Never saw Docker or cargo type pants. Any reason for this?Good questions, here are my 2 cents:
1. Unless you look, dress, speak Spanish perfectly with their accent and have identical mannerisms as Colombians, this is impossible, they size you up in 3 seconds and they know that your a gringo, period, I have stopped trying to blend in as I am 6'-7" and pushing 300 lbs but the benefit I don't get fu*ked with.
2. The casa's, absolutely yes the whole neighborhood knows exactly what goes on, where these houses are, so my suggestion is to not wear shots and saddles as you will only bring more undue attention to the casas. I have spent considerable time in many different barrios of Medellin at my friends house, these are Colombians, and they ALL know of all the going-on's in their barrio, even the houses that are web-cam. They know it all, every person in the barrio.
3. Blue jeans only, if you wear cargo type or dockers this will immediately send out the notice that you are a gringo!
4. Of course always wear long pants to restaurants and discos, this is not Cancun.
5. The prepagos house where they work out of is NOT their own home, they only work in the house to service customers then at the end of their day they go back to their home usually far away.

In the Philippines for example there are bars that only foreigners go to and no Filipinos and vice versa. Sometimes there are different rules for foreigners versus Filipinos. I was looking for any unwritten rules. In this situation you wear and do this. But in that situation you wear and do that.
So in summary there is no reason for you not to be able to read.

Locals born and raised in warmer weather don't feel the heat as much as the turistas do, that should be pretty obvious, even to you. So that's why you don't see shorts. Also, the Latin-american culture is a little less casual than the "gringo" culture so that's another reason you don't see a lot of shorts except for some young guys. Nevertheless, despite that Latin formality, most Colombian guys usually don't dress flashy; they mostly wear jeans.
Why you ask? Isn't the reason obvious by now? Hint: this is Colombia, security and crime is still an issue in this country.
Guys don't want to call unwanted attention to themselves so they dress down. Plus, it's the girls' job to dress up and look sexy, LOL!

Colombian street addresses are in this format: Street name, next lower cross street number, number of meters away from the cross street. Example:
Calle 56 #43-39 (which I believe is the address for New Life). Go to the corner of Calle 56 and Carrera 43. Go west, towards Carrera 44,39 meters. Over the door is a plaque with 43-39 on it.
Calles run east and west. Carreras go north and south. CL is the abbreviation for Calle. Cra is the abbreviation for Carrera. If you can't find a street sign at the corner, just check the addresses on a building on each street. 43-05 tells you the street crossing is either Calle or Carrera 43.55-135 or 56-05 tells you the other street is Carrera or Calle 56. The street running towards the river is a Calle. The other street is a Carrera.

3. Never had a problem with stray dogs in Medellin. As for the unknown risks, fake police is one. Police in Colombia wear olive drab uniforms and often have a green day-glo vest. If they stop you, they don't need to tell you they are police, because it's obvious. Anyone not dressed in the police uniform, who claims to be with the police is trouble. There was a problem last year with guys hanging out around the casas, stopping gringos and robbing them. If someone approaches you, keep moving and try to enter the closest business. Move towards busier streets.
Another unknown is Scopolamine. Don't leave your drink unattended. Don't let strangers offer you drinks.

For americans it is a great international mobile voice and data service but I have used rather in extensively in many countries including columbia, the philippines, thailand, Cambodia, malaysia, Indonesia, Australia but you get the idea. You can save a few pesos getting a local sim card but for me the convenience of having my phone on an active wheels down in a new country is more than worth a couple of dollars period. The knock on google Fi used to be it didn't support a wide varriety of phones (I love my Pixel), but it now supports many Samsung and iPhone models. And as somebody who travels to four or five countries a year I could not live without my Google fi service. I understand it might be a different calculation for someone who does not travel as frequently or has a phone that is less compatible. I think the service is so great it's worth giving it a shot for at most $20, but I'm not twisting anybody's arm.

I traveled with her, connecting from Panama, and they just stamped us through.
I can see it would have been different if she went alone though.

There is a difference between families and groups of friends and 1 lone female. That logically sets off alarms as drug mule or transported for sex. Especially if the girl does not have a job or even one that would pay her enough to be able to travel there.

They all give almost the same rate from their ATM's, but the ATM fees vary. BBVA and Davivienda are the only ones I know of that don't charge ATM fees.

Last Friday, I flagged down a taxi by Parque Lleras to go to Laureles. The fair should be 11 to 12 mil. I noticed the meter was running too fast. When I arrived at the apartment in Laureles, the meter was at 2150. I told him it was wrong, but he didn't budge. I gave him 20 mil because I didn't have enough smaller bills.
Later, I talked to a taxi driver I trust and he said to take a picture of the side of the taxi. That includes the taxi number along with another number assigned by the pubic safety department. He didn't tell me where to file a report, but he said they could take the driver's taxi license.
In essence, I suggest only using Easy Taxi or Uber. That way, you have a record of the trip.
I may meet some friends for a few days and not sure which area I should meet them in. I believe Cartagena and Medellin are the two places.
This post is directed to expats living in CO or knowledgeable about the subject. It has nothing to do with the theme of this board, sorry. I hesitate to get too personal, but screw it. For those that subscribe to expat boards, I've also asked the same question on another board. Please excuse the repetition.
I'm an American looking to retire in Medellin or possibly Cali or elsewhere, though my experience outside Medellin is very limited. I only mention Cali as I believe the cost of living is less than Medellin and I like warm weather. I'd like to inquire what kind of life I would have living on a small pension of about $2200 monthly. The best I can tell from my visits is that my standard of living would be much lower than it is now.
Not to get into all the gory details, I lost my business and with it, my savings. Hence, I have to rely on my pension. Although I'm a professional and have commanded a good salary, at 67 I find that jobs are much more difficult to come by. I was recently laid off and can't even get an interview. Besides, after over 50 years of working, I'm ready to leave the cold winters here in the northeast and enjoy retired life.
Is a decent apartment in a relatively safe area with enough left over for food, modest entertainment, basic medical (I'm healthy), etc possible in my circumstances? The decision I need to make is whether to struggle to look for work so I can replenish my savings somewhat or take the plunge and retire. Thanks.I'll start with a condensed version of my story, then answer your questions and end with my advice.
I arrived in Medellin early April 2017 and didn't return to the US until the end of March 2018. I went because of an offer of employment which should have brought in 6 million COP per month after 6 months and could well have grown to over 20 million per month after 18 months. I was assured everything was setup to get me a work visa.
Nothing was set up for the visa and I wasted a trip to Bogota to find out. No effort had been made on their part to ensure they had everything necessary. The job never materialized and what little work I did, wasn't worth mentioning. After 8 months of spending my money, which was running low, I finally ended the work relationship and convinced them to pay me $2000 for the unpaid work I had done. I spent the next 4 months trying to get something going, but there wasn't enough time and money.
During the year I spent about $30,000. I paid no rent, although I paid for fiber optic internet and utilities, averaging about $200/ month. The $30 k includes about $4 k for furniture, a laptop, Spanish classes, and other durable items. Except for the last 10 weeks, I spent rather freely. I wasn't watching my spending, because I kept expecting the money to start coming in. For at least 5 months I was spending $200-$300 week just on food and drinks. I probably averaged paying for sex slightly more than 1 time per week and many of those my total expense probably averaged $100. My living arrangements meant I could rarely bring girls to the apartment. Instead, I had them pick me up in a taxi and took them to Motel Ibiza. About 100 k for the motel, 150 k for the girl and 40 k for taxis. Other times I visited the casas and spent much less.
In other words, I spent a lot more than necessary and still got by for about $2200 per month.
Can you get by on $2200/ month? It's possible.
At current rates, you'll have about 6 million COP per month. However, if the exchange rates go the wrong way, that could drop to 4 million or less. I initially, figured I could live comfortably on 4.4 million monthly. (After this a number followed by m is millions. 2 m = 2 million).
First thing is to set your budget for 4 m, instead of 6 m. It's easier to spend leftover money than to live without money when it's 5 days to payday. That means rent should be a maximum of 1. 3 m, although you should shoot for under 1 m. Utilities, cable and internet should be 300 k or less. If you cook frequently and choose wisely when you eat out, you can get by on a grocery and eating out budget of 700 k. That meets your basic needs and you still have 2 m to 4 m left for entertainment.
You will want to sign up for the health plan, but that should run around 100 k monthly. In order to maximize your budget, you need to go native. Avoid taxis. Use the buses and metro. The money saved will buy you 10 meals per week. Take advantage of the low prices on fruits and vegetables. You can eat healthy and spend very little. Except for special occasions, eat comida tipica. Why spend 30 k for a burger and fries, when 10 k gets you meat, potatoes, rice, a salad, platano and fresh fruit juice?
What about entertainment? At 50 k in the casas, you can easily afford 2 visits per week and have 1 Facebook girl over every week. That still leaves almost 1 m of your 4 m budget.
My advice is to take 1 or 2 months as a trial run. Spend a month in Medellin and a month in Cali. You'll need to find an apartment for 1 m. Keep track of all your expenses. Can you get by at a level you're comfortable with for no more than 4 m? If so you're ready to give it a try.

As I posted in the Medellin forum (sorry for any duplication), I am in the beginning stages of making arrangements to retire and relocate to CO. At this point, I'm leaning towards Medellin and am considering Cali. I have never been to the latter but have been to Medellin several times.
For preparation, I'the like to spend a month or so looking around for an apartment rental (and having fun! I'm at a disadvantage since my Spanish is only a little better than basic. Can someone help with a recommendation of a trustworthy and knowledgeable English-speaking person to show me around. I would require someone in Medellin and Cali. If I find something, I will make arrangements to rent and move within a few months. I know renting is a little complicated. That's another reason to have someone trustworthy help and to also avoid going to realtors and paying the extra fee.
I came across a site, showaround dot com. It seems mostly geared for tourists that want a guide or some other form of help. I think it may be appropriate for my purposes. Does anyone have any knowledge of them? Or any recommendations?

The trick is to live in Estrato 3. Getting around on a bicycle or motorcycle is also a good option; it works out to even cheaper than taking the bus!
I don't even feel that I'm missing much from life up north, even when I've had to just scrape by.

The topic always flares up again when some newbie wants to bring cash. The only valid reason I can see to bring cash is if you have ilicit money that you cannot put into a bank account and you'd rather just spend it in Colombia. Other than that, use ATMs, it's the most cost-effective, safe and convenient method.
Don't be a chump and let your bank rip you off. Shop around in your country of residence for a Visa or Mastercard (or preferably both) that does not add a fee or commision for foreign currency cash withdrawals. Read the small print.
Credit cards normally charge you a high rate of interest from the day of cash withdrawal. You can avoid this by paying money into your credit card account ahead of time, so you're not actually getting credit.
In Colombia get your cash from ATMs that don't add a fee for foreign issued cards. Most ATMs, including BanColombia and RedAVAL charge around 13 k COP.
Davivienda: free withdrawals, limit 400 k COP, repeat as necessary.
Banco Caja Social (This has never been mentioned on this forum, I believe): free withdrawals, limit 700 k COP (on my card anyway).
You can repeat withdrawals on the same day up to a limit that is set by the issuing bank, I believe. One time I got 1200 k a day out of Davivienda several days in a row, no problem.
I try and avoid using my cards other than in ATMs. The risk in a shop is that your card data gets stolen. Even if you don't get a fraudulent charge on your account, the bank may block your card and you are left without money until you get hold of your replacement card. For this reason, always have a second card as backup. Last year my main card got blocked and reissued. My bank wouldn't tell me what happened, but I suspect it may be because I used the card to buy an airticket online for someone other than me (for a girl).
Another thing to avoid is to arrive in a country like Colombia and max out your card in the first ATM. This is likely to trigger your bank's fraud algorithm and block your card. This happened to me once in Brasil.

Yes for average amounts but if you need to pay 2 million pesos upfront for an apartment because its owned by too small of a business to accept credit cards you're stuck bringing cash or wiring the money. I'll be fucked if I'm going to wire money to Colombia. That shit probably raises enough red flags on its own. So I'll bring just enough to get 2 million pesos to the airport in Bogota and check the cambios for the best rate. There are several of them right when you exit customs and one in the baggage area.

This is Colombia, small business is flexible. I forgot to mention: if you use your Credit or Debit Card to pay for goods or services, make sure they charge you in COP and not in USD, EUR or whatever your card's currency. I have paid in better hotels by card (when I didn't have enough cash in pocket) and most times I had to insist that they charge me the proper amount in COP, because when the machine sees a foreign card, by default it converts at its own crappy rate to your currency, costing you around 5% more. Some hotel staff didn't know how to tell the machine charge to in COP and had to get help. Always check the amount on the screen and insist on COP.
Even some ATMs offer to charge you in your currency. Don't do it.

I actually found a another good bar that I like to hang – out at, and I will recommend this place as being worth a visit.

My first visit to a restaurant in Colombia, a little place in Bogota, near Parque 93, left me frustrated. Simply put, I expected to receive US restaurant service in Colombia. As everyone knows, service in Colombia is much different. I expected a waiter to check on me 4 minutes after handing me the menu, and every 5 minutes after that. As you already know, that ain't happening.
It took me several days to adjust. When I did, I learned something. The waiters and waitresses were being polite, by Colombian standards. To interrupt someone with a mouthful of food, just to ask a basic question is rude.
When we're traveling, especially to common mongering destinations, it's easy to treat it just like home. At home, nobody is going to show up 90 minutes late without any effort to inform you of the delay. At home, the cashiers keep the lines moving. Waiters swoop down on you every 5 minutes. If you let them, these things can ruin your day. Even worse, these things are unavoidable.
No matter where you go, or what you do in Colombia, you're going to have interactions with the locals. That's why most of us go there. I've listened to several guys gripe about how annoying it can be dealing with Colombians. My response is, "stop expecting them to be north Americans."
You can yell all you want at the girl who showed up late, or who didn't tell you she was on her period, but it won't change anything, except for your mood. She's going to be late for the next guy. Screaming at the cashier or waitress won't accomplish anything either. Neither will complaining about them to me.
I'm almost always going to side with the Colombian. They are just being Colombian. If your dog shits in the wrong spot, I'm on the dog's side. To him, it smelled like the right place to shit. He's just following his instincts. It's not right or wrong, it's just different. There are things you can't change.
How you handle all the situations that come up is your decision. However, if you accept that these things are inevitable, you can learn to work around them or to deal with them without letting them affect your mood.
The Paisas are going to be the same next week, next month and next year.

When I've had women really into me, they have been as punctual as anybody in North America is.My point is that you're not going to change it, especially with first time girls. Usually they will be late. You can cancel, or cuss her out, but it's not going to change.

If I'm really interested in giving her a try, I'll give a bigger window. If she's just in the middle of the scale for me, I shrink the window and give her an ultimatum.
But there's always the chance of something coming up. If it's raining hard, chances are you're out of luck in Medellin. Especially if she lives up in the hills. One extremely dependable girl cancelled because her mother couldn't make it up to their house until the rain stopped. Nobody to watch the kids until she got home.
My vacation attitude is to be relaxed. I don't want to create a bunch of stress every day over things I can't change. I make allowances. If I need to take a detour, I enjoy the change of scenery instead of griping about taking a different route.

There's also Picap for the really intrepid. They send you a MOTORCYCLE that picks you up.
Do any of you guys tip hotel housekeepers in Colombia? They seem so surprised when I do it.

Ron Medellin Extra Anejo 8 yr is my usual go-to Colombian Ron nice balanced anejo.

Coffee.I know the sweets and candy aren't a problem, at least for a reasonable amount. I know a lot of people bring back pills, but not sure on how much is allowed, or if they are declaring them. Coffee I believe has a limit, but I can't remember the amount. Clothes shouldn't be any problem either. Most of the clothes I returned with were bought in Colombia. No experience with the knock-off shoes, but the knock-off jeans weren't very well made.

Coffee.As long as you aren't bringing in controlled substances where you are going (nootropics, opioids etc which CAN ALL be gotten OTC anywhere in Colombia), and they are obviously for personal use or gifts, you will be fine.

Here are some pictures of a Colombian and a Venezuelan cedula. The Colombian is a composite showing front and back. The Venezuelan is just the front and part of that is cropped out. At the top should be 3 colored bars, yellow, blue and red.
First the Colombian cedula. Just below the title is the cedula number. The format is 1. 123.123. 123 I've got pictures of about a dozen cedulas and the first number is always a 1. I don't know if there are any valid cedulas which begin with any other number. Below that are the last names. Many Colombians have 2 last names, the last name of both the mother and father. Next line is for their first and middle name and the last line is for their signature. On the back you'll find the date of birth top left. Place of birth is to the right. The other information is when and where the cedula was applied for, blood type and height.
The Venezuelan cedula is simpler. Top center is the cedula number, 12.345. 678 is the format. Next are the last names, then first and middle name. In the middle: top left is birth date, top right is marital status, bottom left is issue date, bottom right is expiration date. It's good for 10 years.

Even "clean" water can cause bowel irritation and stomach issues. I know people that get sick from drinking coca cola because of the different ingredients and the water used to manufacture.
Water is usually cheap no matter where you go, (except any Disney property, then it is $8 a bottle) you can buy 5 gallon jugs for a few bucks to drink at home base and you can refill travel sized bottles for when you go out and about. Don't risk ruining a trip over a few dollars worth of water. It is bad enough you can't avoid the ice at most times, no reason to play roulette and chug from a tap.

Of course the chemical makeup of the water is different, that is just common sense.
As far as the coca cola, as I said, it is the different ingredients that can also cause some issues. Usually the sweeteners that are used. In Europe they use a beet sugar which alters the taste and also causes me irritation in my stomach.
I have never had any issues with bottled water, so I never had to take on the added costs of distilled water. I think 99.9% of people will be fine using bottled water instead.
The point was, don't drink the tap water, it's not worth saving a few bucks on bottled water.

However, I'm not sure about TLN charges. The general consensus is that you don't do TLN with an unknown girl. Nobody wants to pay the fee to spend the night with a starfish.
Find the girl you want at a casa. Do a 30 minute session with her. If she's what you want, ask her about TLN and get her WhatsApp. Most of the casas close at 7 or 8. Don't pay an exit fee. Just contact her at the end of her shift.
Generally speaking, TLN is double to triple the hourly rate. Make sure you specify the time when she can leave, number of shots and anything else you require. Otherwise, she's likely to spend an hour and expect to get paid the TLN rate and sent home.

I am not looking for cheap or expensive. I am looking for a safe and fun good time. In my opinion that is more important than price if you know what I mean.

This includes places where almost everybody tells you not to drink the water, like Cartagena, Villavicencio, Ibagué and Pasto.
In Bogota Medellin Cali Pereira and Manizales, the water is EXCELLENT, among the best water you'll ever even get out of a tap.
In contrast, in the DR I had a salad once and I was trapped in the bathroom for three whole days.
Tap water is the least of your worries down here.

After spending the last 20 years travelling Asia and Africa, I have decided the give south America a go. If, and it's a big if, unless you're in a casa, the girl has a condom, it will be the cheapest brand and thick. Some places provide condoms, some places sell them at an inflated price, and they'll almost always be generics.
If you have a preferred brand, bring it, because it's unlikely you'll find it in Colombia. Always carry 1 or 2 with you and you won't have a problem.

It is down the west coast from Cartegena. It's a rather quaint area and very relaxing. I stayed at Centro Vacacional Camino Verde. Nice beach and rooms, but not much else.
For reasons which I'll explain in a few weeks, I called my bank today to check on their exchange rate for Colombian pesos. The woman wanted to know how much I wanted to buy. I told her to tell me how many pesos I could get for $300. Simple enough.
A few seconds later she tells me, 20,000 pesos for $300. She wasn't willing to consider that she did something wrong, even when I explained that 20,000 was less than $7. Finally I convinced her to try again and walked her through the process. I still didn't get an answer I was happy with, but it was at least the correct one. Their rate is about 14% under the current rate. Definitely not a bargain.

Is it too dangerous? Yes. Absolutely. At least according to some people. Some will try to convince you that, you'll be lucky to survive a trip to Colombia. Personally I don't like to rely on luck.
Do you like to walk in a bar and drink until you can barely stand? If so, Colombia is too dangerous. You might get away with it a time or two, but eventually someone will relieve you of your valuables.
Do you believe all foreigners are terrified of doing anything against you because you're from the US? If so, Colombia is too dangerous for you. Most of the Colombians I know have a generally positive view of the US, but they aren't worried Uncle Sam is going to swoop in to save a gringo.
Do you insist on wearing your designer sunglasses and shiny jewelry everywhere you go? Do you like to have your new iPhone in your hand so everyone knows you're hip. If so, Colombia is too dangerous for you. There are plenty of Colombians who will look even cooler with all your accessories.

Thanks!Like any place, even in the US, you need to be aware of your surroundings. I just got back from MDE / BOG / CTG and felt completely safe. I went with four other buddies and we didn't have any issue. Women were readily available but my friends really aren't into the scene so I can't report on any ladies this time around. The biggest thing is to know some Spanish but even then I saw plenty of Americans communicating with ladies via google translate and all went well. I'the say Medellin would be good for a first timer. Tons of ladies available at parque Lleras, hell, some even catcalled me in English: o. I'm going solo next year. So much pussy to be had there!

Their section of the beach is private, so no need to worry about hawkers. Also, there are usually ladies in T backs for you admire while you sip on a Pina colada.

Though you are going to pay at least eight times what you will pay in Medellin to get laid once, less than what I lost in any of those 3 incidents. I remember years ago someone following me (I'm sure to) rob me in San Jose late at night. I ducked into a Casino to loose him and then took a taxi home. That said I think MDE is only moderately more dangerous than San Jose. In my mind the quality and quantity of girls, the vastly superior food and infrastructure more than offset perhaps a small additional risk. Carry only what you are willing to loose, consider a theft resistant like PacSafe bag to carry your stuff, stay in a safe building with security that validates and records ID, don't be flashy, don't get drunk in public (being solo) and don't walk down deserted streets at night. Almost everyone who gets bit (including me), let their guard down for at least a moment. Announce your trip here in ISG and perhaps you can acquire a wingman.

If you're in a Colombian city and just want to p4 p, it's WAY safer than going out to normal bars solo.
The former, no problem. The major p4 p places will look after your security. The regular bars, not so much.
The WORST are the regular bars that aren't officially fuck spots, but have prepagos hanging around. Definitely AVOID those if you're flying solo.

Thanks.My first time in Medellin I stayed right downtown on Calle 51 at Hotel Calle Real. The price was right, the rooms nice and roomy, the staff friendly, and the place was secure. The police presence around Botero Plaza is pretty active and it's well lit. While you can certainly get in some trouble if you're a dar papaya, I liked staying in El Centro immensely. There's a restaurant on the second floor above the pastry shop on the SE corner, and you can sit up there with some coffee and watch the entire city of Medellin go by. You're two blocks from Puta Street, and you get to enjoy the wonderful Botero statue garden. I have a friend in Laureles that I generally stay with now, but I still spend a lot of time hanging out in El Centro. I don't like El Poblado at all- too touristy for me.

I too have traveled extensively and had little problems. I just got back from SE Asia last winter, and realized my think is for Latinas, not Asians. Of all things, it was the language, especially in Thailand, that bugged me. There's a shrillness to the language, and the fact every sentence ends with "kaaaaa" that I found a bit abrasive. Give me those sultry, sexy paisas any day of the week!
I especially liked the "walk like John Wayne" part- certainly one of my tactics. Like you, I"m big, white, and while a big teddy bear in reality, have no problem projecting a presence that doesn't encourage bullshit. I also carry a small pepper spray canister with me that I had to use on some trannies in MDE once. The most problem I had (although arguably the best mongering site in the world) was in Tijuana. As you said, it was a case of letting your guard down and not being completely aware of your circumstances.

I had almost forgotten about this- last time I was in MDE I had some USD I needed to change, and for some reason I couldn't find any Casa de Cambios in El Centro (WTF? What happened to them? Anyway, I was directed to one of the really tall buildings on the east side of Parque Berrio. Security guy at the door asks me what I want- I was told I need to speak to "The Russian". It was almost like out of a movie. I get in the elevator, go upstairs, the floor seems abandoned. I go to the door number the security guy told me, knocked, and could hear this guy walking slowly across the full expanse of a hardwood floor. Again, like out of a movie. The guy is so stereotypically Russian looking- wife beater, suspenders, funky glasses and a big wart right between his eyes. He's got pictures of him in his prime, wearing his military uniform on the walls- lots of chicken feathers on the bill of his hat and all kinds of medals. Right in the middle is a great big framed picture of Putin in his prime. The transaction goes smoothly- he won't accept any bills unless they're new and clean- and I get out of there. It looked and felt far more dramatic than it really was, but the whole time I felt like the archetypical dar papaya. But when you need cash, you need cash. End of story.

I had heard so much good about it, about the abundance of beautiful chicas and the social scene, I wanted to experience it first hand. I have friends who used to work there, and some are very pretty. I was disappointed. The only aspects of the Mansion that was average or above average was the receptionist at Mansion 1 (friendliness and looks) and the cleaning ladies at Mansion 2 (for friendliness and efficiency, not looks).

This is a "wholesale" rate because it's the rate that banks use when they are trading foreign currencies with *other banks*.
The conversion rate you see online is the InterBank Rate. However, you will NEVER get the InterBank rate.
The Banks have to make money, so they have a mark-up. On average, banks can mark up an exchange rate by 3-6%. This mark-up is not publicized.
InterBank rates fluctuate through out the day. They change based on several factors like Geo-political events, Interest rates, Trade deficit, National elections etc.
Usually Banks use the Interbank rate at the end of the business day to calculate your conversion rate. This is public information. You can ask Schwab about their InterBank rate.

Schwab has no interbank conversion. That is not their business. It is not that complicated. You withdraw 500,000 pesos. The bank here decides how much it is going to charge your USA Bank for the 500,000. Period. You are debited the charge. With CapOne within about 2 seconds. It hits the US account before I can walk away from the machine.

There is no way I would blindly trust a 3rd world bank to give me a fair rate. The cash exchange rate is determined by the bank / exchange center; but those numbers are posted.
The exchange rate has been the same between all the ATMs on the same day in every country I've been to and tested. In addition, the exchange rate between my debit card and my visa card is virtually the same; sometimes there is a negligible difference.
People might be getting confused because you have to subtract all the fees to calculate the exchange rate. Your bank potentially has multiple fees. The owner of the ATM usually has fees; those should not be used to calculate the exchange rate.

Multiple fees or not (my Colombian bank has none charged) I have received different rates on the same day from 2 different banks. But in the end the contra bank has no say so in the transaction. It is determined here in Colombia.

I do not use Charles Schwab. But this is how it works:
Your conversion rate is determined by the InterBank Rate.
This is a "wholesale" rate because it's the rate that banks use when they are trading foreign currencies with *other banks*.
The conversion rate you see online is the InterBank Rate. However, you will NEVER get the InterBank rate.
The Banks have to make money, so they have a mark-up. On average, banks can mark up an exchange rate by 3-6%. This mark-up is not publicized.
InterBank rates fluctuate through out the day. They change based on several factors like Geo-political events, Interest rates, Trade deficit, National elections etc.
Usually Banks use the Interbank rate at the end of the business day to calculate your conversion rate. This is public information. You can ask Schwab about their InterBank rate.

Other banks (US, non Schwab) will typically charge a fee OVER AND ABOVE what the ATM's bank charges you. This doesn't show up anywhere, it's incorporated into the rate they give you.

Before this trip I decided to fully explore the money exchange issue. Which one really is best? YMMV on this. I don't have a Scwab card. My ATM withdrawal was using a card from a major US bank.
The Medellin airport rate was 2400-$1. That's a cost of 25.1% to exchange money at the airport.
Buying pesos directly from my bank. Their rate on that day was 2755-$1 at a cost of 16%.
Now to the methods I actually used.
A few weeks prior to my trip I sent 1 million pesos to my old roommate. This won't work for most, because most don't know anyone they can trust. My reasoning was to have an emergency fund. If I got robbed, lost my card, or had a bank problem, I'd at least have enough to eat.
Sending Western Union rate was 2966.83-$1 at a cost of 8. 5%.
When I reached Medellin I withdrew 1,020,000 from a Davivienda ATM. Rate was 3011.42-$1. Cost was 6%.
Today I exchanged $300 for 918000, rate of 3060, cost of 4. 5%.
The cost value is how much under that day'srate I received.
I didn't check every casa de cambios. Checked 2 and picked the best rate. Based on my experience, with my bank, the casa de cambio is the best bargain.

Currently, living in a rural area, my best option has 1 branch 40 km away. A better option puts me 100+ km away from an office, in the wrong direction. And I've found that the farther I live from an actual branch the more likely I will need to visit the branch.
Moving to Europe and commuting weekly to work in the US seems like a bad deal to save 4% on 3 transactions a year, but I would rack up the airline miles.

Because of these things, they pay more. Many also look at it as an opportunity to upgrade. They can get a 3 bedroom place for cheaper than the 2 bedroom they had. It's still cheaper, but they don't get to the best level.
All those stores don't have 2 sets of prices. But you can often go down the street to another store and buy groceries for 20-50% less.

Best way to move around in Bogota. You don't need cash-is all app based and safer. Even though I've never had problems with yellow cabs and speak Spanish there is the rare time when they might overcharge a foreigner. But most of the time is fine so don't be afraid to use them either.

FARC was in a war with the government until three years ago. But for 10 years before the peace agreement, parts of the country (the parts you're likely visiting) were mostly safe from violence. Now if you're traveling into the jungle, that's a different story. And I wouldn't visit Buenaventura or north of there in the Choco region. But if you're hanging in a decent neighborhood of Bogota, Medellin, Cali, etc and you exercise common sense precaution, you should be OK.

Of course these things were all problems before this recent development, so from the typical tourist perspective nothing has changed.

I am a a weak, old man now, and was never brave even when I was young (especially at night). I am a Spanish speaker, and did have the misfortune of working abroad for our government for eight years in the 70's, often in troubled areas. I've met many of the type (broke / deluded / desperate...and with guns!) and ran over one of them once with my Land Rover.
So, I wasn't trying to p!ss you off, or doubt you or anything. I agree, there are a lot of dangers out there and, personally, I don't want to go anywhere where I might get beat up, robbed, arrested or killed. I was interested in going to Cucuta this fall, but am less likely to do so now. Less because of a potential resurgence of FARC and more because of reports like Kazeu's:

I am currently in Cucuta now. This is quite disturbing to me, as I was planning to take a bus from Cucuta to bucaramanga and stop in Pamplona along the way. Is this sufficient cause to change my plans? Either the destination or the mode of transport? Any advice?

Many reports warn of street trannies carrying knives. Is this to do with them just wanting to defend themselves or do they also attack?
Is it worth trying to get them on side such as by giving them a small tip for giving directions or something, just in case they would help you out if someone attacks you?

Hi I am thinking of saving some money and ditching verizon for Google FI. How is the service internationally, I travel for fun alot so that is important. I currently pat $10/ day for verizon travel pass. It works great but it gets expensive for 3-4 weeks.
