The rate from the airport to Laguito is 11,500 pesos. If you walk two blocks from the airport, the rate is 7000. There is an airport tax. If you have more than carry-on luggage, you might want to tip 1,000 or 2,000.

Agree with you on the tip thing too, however it reminded me of my last trip leaving cartagena. One of those guys with the rolling carts basically grabbed my luggage from the curb, put it on the cart and hauled it to the end of the avianca check in line before I could voice too much of a protest. The whole process lasted about 60 seconds. Well, I figured I didn't ask him to do it, but I knew he expected a tip, so I said what the hell and gave him 2000 pesos for his 60 seconds of work. Man, you'd have thought I handed him a fresh turd!
His disgust and disappointment were acted out brilliantly. Can't wait to see him again on my next trip :-)

Always hand on to your suitcase as you come out the door. Someone will grab it to try to put it in the trunk and then hound you with "PROPINA!"
The taxi rates changed on Jan. 31 of this year. The 12K rate is correct between 8 pm and 5 am because there is a 500 peso night differential. Also, an air conditioned taxi can charge 10% more.

4 DAYS, I recommend Cartagena. Cali originally had many African slaves to work on the farms. They now live in Cali.
Cartagena has girls from all around Colombia. Lightest girls come from Medellin, where the Spaniards found gold and did not bring slaves from Africa.

I spent 10 days in Cartagena in late April / early May. Here's some notes:
Non-mongering stuff:
Accomodation: While most people seem to stay in Bocagrande, I would definitely recommend getting something in or around the old town. Bocagrande is an ugly concrete desert, while the old town is really beautiful, with lots of things to do. You will probably go back and forth to Bocagrande two times a day (to the beach and to get a girl - see below), but the ride takes only 5 minutes and costs about $2. We had an apartment at the edge of the old town (opposite Cafe del Mar - see below), which was very convenient. We paid $35 per night for a 2 bedroom with aircon. Unfortunately, I don't have contact details. But just walk around in the area, people offering apartments will find you!
Beach: As was mentioned below, the touts on the public beaches are extremely annoying. Go to the beach of the Hilton instead! Get a taxi to drive you to the Hilton, just walk through the lobby and hotel to the pool, grap one of the towels left on a beachchair and go to the beach. Being a foreigner with a Hilton towel, no one will doubt you belong here.
Sunsets: Cafe del Mar is the place to be. It is not quite the same as its Ibiza' role model, but still a terrific place, with cool lounge music, sofas to hang out on, and great cocktails. It's on the old city wall - every taxi driver will know where it is.
Dinner: We usually had dinner on Plaza Santo Domingo in the old town. The restaurants there are probably 2-3x as expensive as other places, but it's still so cheap that we did not care, and the setting is just spectacular. We tried most of the places on the Plaza, and they are all fairly comparable in terms of prices and quality. The steak is very recommended.
Mongering
Non-P4P: You have to speak Spanish (which I don't), as almost no girl speaks English. The chicas seemed very open and interested (once, when I was running on the beach, I had 3 or 4 groups of girls waving at me to come over), but due to my language problems, I can't really say how easy it is to score.
Pleyboy: Taxi drivers will always try to convince you that you should go there, because it's a longer ride than LDV, so they can charge more. Don't go: The place is ugly, the girls are more expensive and less attractive than at other places.
La Dolce Vita: Well covered on this forum and definitely a must-go. Most girls will charge you about 100k for one hour, some of the less attractive ones you can get for 70-80k, some of the stunners will not go below 120-150k. Some specific recommendations:
- There's a real beauty called Tanaa (or something like that), she has some red color in her otherwise black hair. She is really good and sweet in bed, totally recommended. Nice DFK, but unfortunately no BBBJ, and I did not manage to get her below 120k (she starts at 150k).
- A girl called Vivi who usually sits at the column at the far end of the place (seen from the entry), with a very long upper body who usually wears jeans and a shirt that leaves here belly uncovered. She charges 100k, is very sweet, does nice DFK and BBBJ (no CIM). If you go with her, say hello from me (Chris...).
- Her friend, usually sitting next to her (although that might have changed - they had a fight over me at the end of my stay, and Vivi said she will never talk to her friend again...). Forgot her name, she is from Cali, tall, pretty, big boobs, nice smile. Starts at 150k but comes down to 100k, DFK, great BBBJ and CIM.
Tripleterra (or something like that): Surprisingly, this place has not been covered on this forum. It is in the old town (just ask any local), nice club with good music and atmosphere (better than LDV, much better than pleyboy). Less girls than at LDV, but similar quality and generally cheaper (60-80k for one hour, plus you pay 10k take-out fee for the girl). Semi-recommendation: There is a very cute girl called Gloria there, who is also very sweet in bed, unfortunately quite shy and inexperienced. If you like the VE (virgin experience), go with her (and say hello from me...).

I also enjoy the very large mall and movie theatres. There is a smaller theatre in Boca Grande with one screen only.
I enjoy using the pool at Hilton also. Also tried the breakfast for free but was presented with a bill. Breakfast was worth the cost with eggs bennedict. Truly a great hotel, and I hear the cost is about $85 a night.
Also enjoy the street action. Cannot post photos, on this site to share with you, but many street girls about 18 or 19 for 40,000 pesos. GREAT!

Hello. Below is a report from my trip to Cartagena a couple of weeks ago:
Spent a week in the El Laguito area. Found it to be relatively safe. I was out many nights around 3am and never had a problem. You can't escape the touts, they are basically everywhere. Just politely say "no gracias amigo" and they will pretty much leave it at that. There are alot less touts around at night, so that makes it easier. I also visited Bocagrande and the walled city. Both are nice areas. I figured there would be alot more nightlife in the walled city area. I didn't see too much action, but maybe I just didn't hit the right places at the right times. I think next time I will explore this area in more detail.
LDV is truly a great place. Lots of really good looking women. My spanish is limited, but I tried really hard to speak the language. Trying to speak spanish really does go a long way, and you'll be surprised how much you can pick up words and phrases in a week's time. I know it helped me, because I could negotiate prices to around 80,000 pesos, and I wasn't even trying too hard. Just try to start a conversation with them, and be respectful. I basically pulled a different woman out of there each night around 1am, and they usually stayed the night. Also, rent an apartment rather than using a hotel. I had an apartment with a nice ocean view, and the women really seem to enjoy it. Never had a chance to visit the Playboy club, not too sure how the talent compares to LDV.
Taxis will run about 5000 pesos to go from laguito to the walled city. Negotiate price first with the driver, because there are no meters. I never had a problem with any of the drivers. They all seemed friendly to me.
Overall, had a really nice trip, and plan on visiting again in the future.
I was told that Cartegena would be best if searching for Black colombian women. Ive seen several post that imply that Cali would be best. Could someone please let me know which is best for darker skineed Colombians? Someone here must know 4 sure!

Looks like COPA (www.copaair.com) is the cheapest (and non-stop) @ $283 r/t all included.
Avianca is is few bucks more and you connect through Bogota.
West Air (www.west.com.co) is a small Colombian airline and they fly cheap non-stop from Panama to Medellin and San Andreas, but not to CTG, if you ever thin of going to those destinations.
Well, things went about as well with my chica as I predicted. The first time I visited, the time with her was great, everything I could ask for and more, the moment I bought the flight ticket for the second trip it was all about the money, which had never been brought up the first time I was there. I guess that is a lesson for those who want to learn the easy way. Her name is Nubia, and I met her on Match.com, so beware gents. She is a very classy lady, but the second trip is when she goes for the money.
I arrived, and she didn't meet me at the airport. I wasn't real surprised, I hadn't contacted her for a week before arriving. I went to the apartment that I rented from Mary at Torre Centauro. I have to say, Mary is excellent for renting apartments from. She is very understanding and helpful. I highly reccomend her for first timers. I got a two bedroom with AC and first class accomodations in Largito for 100 mil pesos a night. The apartment was really better than most resorts, except not having the pool and the other amenities. Also the doormen were very excellent, and very helpful. A good doorman is important when you are juggling chicas. You can shop around and get cheaper apartments, but I found the treatment I got from Mary and the doormen worth the extra cost. The place is just three buildings from the Hilton.
Anyway, back to mongering. After taking a nap I went over to the internet cafe in the tall building next to the Hilton to call my chica to see how things would go, and got picked up by three very good looking pros who took me upstairs for a foursome that was one of the best experiences of my life. The girls are from Bogota and have worked in Panama. Their names are Diane, Denise, and Monica. Just returned recently from a excellent first time trip with two of my fellas to Panama and Colombia. I flew COPA Airlines from Miami to Panama May 17 - May 21 then onto Cartagena Saturday May 21 to Sunday May 29 for a grand total of $412 round trip!
I will be breaking this trip report up with my coverage of Saturday- Monday Nights then I will write about Tuesday-Saturday a bit later.
Arrival in Cartagena, Customs
Landed in Colombia from 4 days in Panama on-time and exchanged a quick $50 at the Money exchange place at a 2150 rate. Then cleared customs and I have never seen such a thorough seach of baggage than in Colombia, they were really searchin through all my bags, pulling out everything. I had a chica waiting for me outside the airport looking through that window tryin to scope me out...lol. I met the chick on amigos and I almost totally forgot I told her my flight info and to meet me there on arrival. I was'nt trippin because baby was "Bad" and she rolled with us in the taxi to Boca Grande Beachand I pounced on her a few minutes into settling into the apartment even though my spanish is bear mininum. Baby was a student at the University and very clingy and wanted me to go to Rosario Islands the next day but I shook her after fucking the first afternoon.

Actually I had Alex (The Guide) pick me up from the Airport and this began the beginning of the Mr Loudmouth experience! Me and Alex talked a few times before I arrived and even chatted on MSN and I basically told him that "I'm 25 years old (Alex is like 23) and I really don't need a guide because I've visited a few latin countries and I blend in very well because I have a light brown complexion In athletic shape and African American. But I basically told him that I just like to get out and make it happen with my guys BUT I will call you if I have any questions just as a friend (People were surprised that I was'nt Colombian and did'nt speak Spanish). I let him know that I just needed know what's going on with the clubs in Cartagena and then we can definately hang out and get on some chics and fuck hoes, like I do with my friends back here in the states.
Me and Alex had a good vibe but my friend who rolled with me was'nt really feeling the guy. Alex means well, but dude really is very loud and kind of embarrasing speakin in LOUD ENGLISH to me and my boy. We went to his house and had some drinks and greenery while taking in the view of Cartagena Bay and were just vibing at his place in Manga (which is the upscale neighborhood in Cartagena) and we talked and dude was basically tellin us he needed a "Tip" plus expenses (Taxi,Phone Card, Food) when I heard that I shook him right there that first night on Saturday because i told him I was'nt paying him to kick it with me. It was understood and we went back to our Boca Grande Beach Apartment directly on the Ocean around 7ish to get ready for the night!
Apartment/Accomodations
Mery rented us the apartment and you guys have her info here on the website/ It was a 3 bedroom with a beautiful ocean view on the 10th floor of a 12th floor building. Has a little stereo, TV and new appliances and freshly painted with a view to die for! Matter a fact when the chics walked in they walked straight to the balcony and it was almost hypnotic to the chicas, It always got me in that proper mood to get ready to fuck or relax. The apartment address was Torre Caribe II directly across the street from Boca Grande Beach. The apartment was great and was located centrally to everything in Boca Grande Beach and a 6-7 block walk to LDV. And a 5 minute ride to the OLD CITY by Bus-Moto-Taxi.

They have much better bars and restaurants there as well. Pick your poison!
I did'nt wake up on Sunday until about 3pm...lol so we got a late start on the day. I like what I read about Cartagena. (Chica/City wise). My question is a simple one. Of the two, which hotel is Chica friendly, the Hilton or Decameron? Plus, I hate Beach vendors bugging my ass, I hear that the Beach for the Hilton is better, no vendors. Is that true? If so, are there still plenty of local babes on the Hilton's beach, or just tourists?

The Decameron is not chica friendly and the beaches there are full of touts. The Hilton is chica friendly and their beach has fewer touts and very few local chicas.
the Hilton has security guards posted at the property edges to keep most touts and locals off the beach. There are still some approved jet ski and banana raft boats that will ask you if you want to buy a ride. Otherwise it is quiet here.
Does anyone know what the Hilton charges during high season? I was told $85 during low season.

been reading some stuff here that guys got problems to get chicas in hotels. being in cartagena you COULD rent an appartement in the Boca Grande(and Laguito)barrio (turist area). At the time i was there I paid about 15 US $ a day...completely with furniture and all the rest.(no phone) Even at night it's safe...and always party time starting on thursdays untill saturday. Sorry but on sunday even this is dead. Just walk in the many app. buildings and ASK if there are flats for rent.
Was there in octobre 2003 for 4 weeks had had a real good time. Cartagena is in general pretty 'safe" (for colombian standards)if you stick to the rules.
1) low profile
2) speak some spanish
3)don't flash cash $$$ arround in public
4) take a taxi after dusk.
5) don't visit nightclubs if you are DRUNK.you will get RIPPED OFF.
Avoid getsemani and the central city area after nightfall IF you are alone and NOT knowing what you are doing.
Some low budget hotels also let in girls. But the pain is that many of these also function as love motels.....;-)your chica will know were to find them.(or just ask any taxista/hotellobby guy) Many putas can be found in the Getsemani barrio.....but realy be carefull in this area.Don't go alone...and be sure NOT to be drunk.
Cartagena is one of the most pretty city in Colombia with a colonial heart and is a very romantic city. One realy bad thing is the assholes at the beach trying to sell you stuff...just IGNORE them...and DO NOT start to speak spanish with them.(then they will even borther you more)They are real "puta de hijos"...!!

I have mongered in Brazil lately, but have never been to Colombia.
If any of you guys have mongered in both places I would like to know if Colombia is a good deal with regards to garota quality and pricing versus mongering in Rio.
Based on the pictures I've seen posted here looks like Colombia has some really hot chicks.
Also, I would like to know where is the best and hottest mongering scene in Colombia.
Also need to know the relative street safety as compared to Rio.

Several close friends have spent a lot of time in Rio, and I live in Cartagena. You get wilder sex in Rio, but it is sweeter in Colombia. The numbers are much greater in Rio, but how many can you do in a day? Prices in Colombia vary widely by city and venue. The range is US$17 to 100 per hour. I never ask for more than an hour. I usually pay US$30-40.
The better areas of Cartagena and Medellin are much more safe than Rio. In Cartagena I can walk alone at 3:00 am in Centro, Boca Grande and Laguito.
As far as P4P, Laguito(LDV and the beach) in Cartagena is probably the best. Medellin has some great street action-ask any cabbie. Some guys swear by Bogota. Cali is a bit dangerous for me. Until you really know what you are doing, confine yourself to the major cities and travel between them by air.

You won't find any places worth staying at in BG or Laguito for US$15 per night now. Look at US$40 to 60 for the better places. You will get the best deal by shopping. Getsemane is not that dangerous, but you might want to cab between 10pm and 4am.

I prefer MDE over CTG also. CTG is full of touts, tourists and bad taxistas. Not to mention the heat and humidity.
Maybe you hit LDV on an off night. My standards are very high and I've always seen multiple stunners there. Almost as good of quality as Mango's. Of course, every girl is a sure thing at LDV, it's a much longer shot at Mango's. But then again, I'm very ugly.

Thank you, Tom 33. I called the Hotel Charlotte and they quoted me a single rate of $65 p/night. Would it be advisable to go ahead and book it as a double vs. a single? I want to avoid being screwed with when I am bringing a chica back to my room.
This place sounds like a good option, unless you or anyone else has a better suggestion, this will be the one that I reserve at. Also, if anyone cares to recommend a decent hotel in Bogota for a one or two night stay, I would appreciate that as well (needs to be chica friendly, of course).

i had a chance come across hotel charlotte (i was just checking out other options for the next time) and it's is nice is a nice quaint hotel right in the middle of boca grande on the main drag with free breakfest included in the rate of $65, with a nice pool and free use of their hi-speed computer while your a guest there and guest-friendly. it kind of has that "colonial look & feel" to the hotel. even though it's not directly on the beach it's only about a block away. i met the doorman there who's name is marlon who speaks really good english and can direct you to wherever you need to go and will find the best room available at that particular hotel for you, he's about 28 and also knows the non-pro nightlife scene as well.
regarding airlines with no night-time stop over you can also fly copa airlines from miami via panama city, i had a really good connecting flight from miami to panama city to ctg. i caught a really good deal of $412 roundtrip in may with taxes and that was with a 4 day stop over in panama city then 8 days in cartagena with costamar travel agency. you can contact the manager there his name is renzo chipocco and his number is 305-444-5012 or you can email him @ r.chipocco@costamar.com he will hook you up!

I have found the best way of dealing with the touts is to carry a portable CD player with headphones, wear sunglasses, and look the other way, ignoring them. Once you acknowledge them they will continue, even if you say NO. Usually then you must say NO MOLESTE in a rude tone of voice to get them off your trail.
Sometimes they still reply, ITS MY JOB or THIS IS NOT YOUR COUNTRY.
however it is my money and I have the last say.
Usually taxi drivers are the most rude because they will honk their horn at you when they see you walking along the sidewalk. They usually try to overcharge you in Laguito or Boca Grande, so ask the price before you get in the taxi and do not tip. It is not expected.
It is better to have the poverty, because the girls are alot cheaper, and also you can find a beauty on the streets renting herself for an hour.
This morning I found a 22 year old beauty, no kids, no stretch marks, sitting near the Hilton for 60,000 pesos for one hour. 9.5 rating for body, 9 for performance, 7 or 8 for face. Nice hard tits and ass. No attitdue, she knew exactly how to please. In the states it would be $400 for an hour and she would have her own website.

We have the same problems down here in Lima. I ususally give to the 80 year old women and will buy a piece of pizza or whatever else is convienient for a five year old girl. However If you are a teenage/20/30 girl with a child it ain't gonna happen,a boy/teenager/man you have to provide a service or entertain me. relax Volpone....there is NO Malaria in Cartagena.
Only in the jungle area.(but if i am correct you should NOT go there....!)...and even then it is NOT the worst form of malaria.
If you rub your skin with repellent and have long pants and long slieves you should be OK. Also a good thing is not to put on too much after shave in the evening.
HOWEVER......dengue might be an issue. (i have seen civil servants from the city spraying repellant during the day against the dengue muskito)

You could always check the CDC web site and see what they recommend, but I would advise against taking Larium or any other Malaria prophylactics due to the possibility of bad side effects. Larium and other malaria prophylactics do not prevent malaria; they only lessen the effects of the condition, should you contract it.
Unless you plan on going into the jungle, I personally think it would be a waste of your money and if you do plan on going into the jungle, I would be worried about other things besides malaria.

Actually the CDC recommends that you take malaria meds while visiting Cartagena. However, there is no danger of malaria in the city. I live in CTG and do not take malaria meds. If you plan to go out into the wild areas, you should take the meds.

Yellow Fever shot is suggested for aklmost all of Carib coast, but for the guys who never leave the city (the majority) TOTALLY unnecessary IMHO.
Ngp has it right on. I have never seen a massage parlor in CTG. Casas are the closest thing. They have back rooms for play or you can take-out(for a fee to the house). Pleyboy is about the best, but it is too pricey for me. Others open and close with regularity. Ask any cabbie. I haven't been to a casa in over two years.

I did pick up a small guidebook from Ullysses Due South on Cartagena. It has several excellent maps of Boca Grande, Laguito, and the walled city. LDV is not on the Laquito map, but Hotel Las Velas is which I understand is across the street. I ordered mine from Amazon for $10. It also has excellent descriptions of all the cultural sights, beaches, and restaurants. I will be in Cartagena July 9th thru the 16th if any one wants to hook up.

Just now saw your post... I'll look into the guide you mentioned. I bought a general South America Guide put out by Insight Guides and when it comes to Colombia, it is everything but insightful. They have designated 20 out of 352 pages for Colombia. Out of those 20 pages on Colombia, an entire 2 ½ pages are about Cartagena.
I knew that it wouldn’t be too hard to find, but thanks for giving me an idea about where LDV is located. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be spending quite a bit of my time there (hehehe).

I am planning on making a trip to Colombia in early September. I am really interested in seeing Medellin, but I do plan to make a side trip to Cartagena. I gather that the action in Medellin is kinda slow on Sundays, so I am thinking of leaving for Cartagena on a Sunday, and maybe stay there until Tuesday or Wednesday. How is the action in Cartagena from Sunday to Tuesday or Wednesday? Specifically, I am interested in visiting the famous LDV. And maybe hunt around in the beach.

Sunday night is usually a good night. Mondays are a little slower, but still ok. Then it starts to pick up again on Tuesday. The beach is usually dead during the week.
Ask any taxi to take you to LDV.
A few observations from a trip in June to Cartagena --
1. Sofitel Santa Clara is not a good place for a monger. The price is ridiculous -- $300 per night with taxes included. While the service is impeccable, the equal of any I've experienced anywhere, the price is out of whack for Colombia. Also there's a nasty walk of shame. I only spent one night there.
2. Others have recommended getting an apartment from Mery Salence, with Torre Centauro properties(tel. 52 57 5 655 0384; email: oficerna@yahoo.com). She doesn't just lease at Torre Centauro properties, but has a number of up market apartments owned mostly by gringos, I think. I came at the last minute (thus the room at Sofitel first night) and she managed to get me a couple of nice apartments during my stay. Another advantage -- if something goes wrong, she's going to help you out. She a very nice, helpful person.
3. La Dolce Vita is fantastic. Stay there a while and you're going to come across some stunners. And GFE is the rule instead of the exception. I came across one, Diana, that not only was about an 8-1/2, a morena Paris Hilton look alike, but also I couldn't stop her from cooking and cleaning my clothes. Right now 150,000 pesos seems to be what women at LDV want, but they'll take less.
Has anyone ever checked out 2 girls for all night from here? Just wondering if the girls would tolerate eachother and do lesbian action or would they get jealous of the other one?

I was once at Tu Candela and only for a short time. It was a Saturday night late and one of the girls from LDV wanted to go dancing there. I went with her. When she wanted 200,000 pesos for TLÑ I walked out on her and left her there. End of discussion. I do not know about the availability of girls there.
The taxi driver took me to another club in el centro but I got tired of the 200,000 pesos routine and went home alone that night.
Sometimes I just get tired of negotiating and walk out on the girls in frustration.

I think this is a very reasonable business practice. There's only one reason to go to LDV - to pick up a pro. The girls are not employees of LDV, but they do bring in customers who in turn generate revenue for the club. Hey they have to pay rent, utilities, etc.
So it makes sense to give the girls a discount. That will entice them to show up and stay longer, especially on slow nights. As we all know things run in cycles. I have no problem with the pricing structure.

I don't think guys are getting TLN for 80k unless it's really slow. It's closer to 150k. If 5 girls laughed at your offer, that was probably a good indication that it was a seller's market that night. You shouldn't feel insulted.

It's cyclical. The girls come and go. The market bears what the market bears. Lots of girls, few customers, price goes down. And vice-versa. Plus there are individual variables. Maybe her rent is due tomorrow. Maybe her sugar-daddy just sent her another wire-transfer. All of this affects price in addition to suppy and demand.
For what it's worth, I've been hobbying for a few years, lately a lot in Medellin and a few times in Cartagena. I never bring up money and if they throw out a stupid figure I just smile and say sorry, not tonight. No reason to get all offended. This lets them know you know what the right price is and there's a great chance she come back with a more reasonable figure.

NGP-I have been paying 5000 pesos for water for over a year at LDV. They do have to make a profit. There is no salida, and nothing says you have to buy anything for any chica or for you. Aldo, the manager, also buys drinks for the chicas but will never buy one for you. I like the fact that he takes care of them. It makes for a better selection.
I'm fat and old(57)-ugly too- but don't have too many problems. I never want more than an hour and offer 100K in LDV. Some chicas have asked for more. I politely tell them "no gracias" and move on. In most cases I end up getting them for the 100K sooner or later. They have every right to charge as much as they want. I will not pay more than 100K. Of course I live in CTG more than half the year and own an apartment in Laguito. I don't know them all, but most of them know me. I have had some bad experiences but not many. Having read the posts as far back as a year ago, it seems that the consensus is staying at an apartment as opposed to a hotel. However, the apartment finding and booking agents seem to come and go, and the opinions about them vary. So, since I am taking a trip to CTG in another 10 days, any suggestions as to an agent (who is reliable and as importantly still around), apartment building, area, etc. would be appreciated. Reports to follow.

I couldn't copy the map, but get a good map of Colombia and look just South of cartagena for San Onofre, the beach town in Sucre state (the next state past Bolivar-where Cartagena is located). I've met several chicas in Cartagena from that area (and Monteria, Lorica and other towns a bit further South).
The point is that while you are safe in Cartagena itself, leaving the city you also leave the security of the protective cocoon surrounding Colombia's tourism cash cow.
Colombia Unearthing Plight of Its 'Disappeared'

SAN ONOFRE, Colombia - In one of the most horrific chapters of Colombia's long civil conflict, investigators are unearthing scores of bodies from secret graves dotting this humid cattle-grazing region near the Caribbean, the victims of right-wing paramilitary groups now benefiting from generous concessions for pledging to disarm.

With dozens of people coming forward in recent months to complain of missing relatives, government and military officials now estimate that hundreds of poor farmers may have been killed and secretly buried in a terror campaign that began in the late 1990's.
The paramilitary groups, they say, kidnapped and killed their victims to seize land and in some cases weed out supporters of the Marxist guerrillas who have been fighting the government since the 1960's.
For years, fear kept the crimes hidden. But with the arrival this year of a new military commander who has secured the region, families finally began speaking out, despite lingering dangers that cost the life of one whistleblower earlier this year.
So far, 72 bodies have been recovered from El Palmar, a vast farm outside San Onofre that was used as a local base by the paramilitary forces, whose militias control several coastal states.
From the dark, moist earth, the authorities have also uncovered bodies in several other villages and are working to locate graves in five other states, said Elba Beatriz Silva, coordinator of the attorney general's human rights office, which is overseeing a gradual process of exhumations that may expand even further.
"A lot of people here have disappeared - sons, fathers, mothers, brothers," said Iván Wilches, 22, whose brother disappeared. "Every day there were people killed. They would pull them out of houses, breaking down doors. They would all wind up dead."
The discoveries have highlighted a brutal but overlooked component of Colombia's war - the disappearances of more than 3,500 people in recent years - and raised fresh questions about whether there will ever be justice for the killings.
The authorities say they have arrested 11 paramilitary fighters from the area who face criminal charges. But the two suspected masterminds, according to local people and government authorities, are benefiting from a new Justice and Peace Law that offers them leniency in exchange for disarming.
The two commanders- Edward Cobos and his lieutenant, Rodrigo Mercado Pelufo, who ran the local 600-member militia - are ensconced in a government-run safe haven for 50 paramilitary commanders and could serve sentences as short as two years.
They and other militia members are not obliged to provide details of their crimes. If the authorities do press charges, the law gives them only 60 days to build cases, something that human rights groups say will be nearly impossible.
The government, which has tried and failed for years to negotiate an end to the conflict with the guerrillas, says the new law is needed to demobilize some 15,000 paramilitary fighters throughout the country who have taken up arms in recent years, adding to the violence.
The law has ignited fierce objections from those who fear that it will lead to a whitewash of some of the worst atrocities of a 41-year civil conflict in which 200,000 people have died. Until now, most notice was given to massacres and the assassination of politicians. But little attention has been paid to the what is known as the "disappearing" of people, something more commonly associated with other Latin American conflicts, from El Salvador to Brazil to Argentina in past decades, when it was used mostly by military governments wanting to silence adversaries and sow fear among civilians.
Since the 1990's, the tactic has been used with increasing frequency in Colombia, too. The Colombian Commission of Jurists says that 3,588 people vanished in this country from 1996 to 2004. The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, which visited Colombia in July, has investigated nearly 1,200 cases, including those in San Onofre.

Many of the killings here are attributed to a paramilitary unit calling itself the Heroes of the María Mountains, which the two commanders ran. The attorney general's office says that the group was engaged mostly in drug trafficking and corrupting local officials and that the killings helped it seize poor farmers' land and control cocaine trafficking corridors to the Caribbean.

Officials say the paramilitary groups also took aim at those they accused of aiding the rebels, the few who dared complain, small-time criminals and even their own fighters who fell out of favor.
"They were taken to that farm, where they were given an absurd sentence, not even a trial, since they were already condemned, and they were then killed in the most horrific of ways," said Ms. Silva, of the attorney general's human rights office.
Because the local authorities and rogue military officers were suspected of working with the militias, for years almost no one in the area said a word in protest, said families who have in recent weeks told the authorities about missing relatives.
"Everyone knew about this, but no one said anything, because if you did they'd come at 3 or 4 in the morning and take you away," said Lorenza Cárdenas, 60, the mother of José Luis Olivo, who disappeared two years ago and is believed to be buried somewhere nearby. "Here, if you talked, you died."
The fear began to dissipate this year only after a hard-charging marine colonel, Rafael Colón, was given command of the local marine base, residents said. Rooting out paramilitary forces as zealously as they did Marxist rebels, the marines instilled a sense of order.
That prompted one family, the Verbels, to gather others in town who knew about the graves to come forward. "Here, everyone knew about the graves, and we reported them," said Hermes Verbel, 43, one of eight brothers who organized the villagers. "Everyone knew how the paramilitaries took land, took people's cattle."
For their daring, the Verbel family paid a high price: the killing of one of the brothers, Guillermo, 52, in January. But by then the death only energized villagers. More came forward from neighborhoods like Alto Julio in San Onofre, where nearly every family in the ramshackle barrio can speak of a relative who has disappeared.
Iván Wilches's brother, Mauricio, 16, was snatched off the street a year ago. Fidencio Berrio, 67, recalled that his son, Andrés, 42, went out to make a phone call in 2002 and never came back.
Maruja del Carmen Pestana lost two sons, and Hermenijirda Julio said her son, Jairo Luis Alta Miranda, was grabbed by gunmen from the local bullfighting ring in 2003.
"We don't know where our loved ones are," said Mariela Medina, whose father, José Torres, 60, worked on El Palmar and disappeared in 1997. "We know they were taken, we know they are dead, but we don't know anything more."
For now, the authorities are searching for graves with the help of the families of the victims and informants like Feliciano Yepes, a former paramilitary commander now in prison. He has led investigators to one grave after another.
"There are approximately 500 people buried on that farm," Mr. Yepes said, according to a government deposition, "among them delinquents, farmers who did not collaborate and also paramilitaries."
Still the families of the missing continue to arrive and make their claims in the small local command post of the attorney general's office, providing clerks with details about the victims and identifying features. So far, only two bodies have been positively identified, though DNA samples have been taken from 46 villagers so they can be compared with those of the skeletal remains.
"We all want this so much," Ms. Cárdenas said. "A mother feels the pain, and all mothers wonder what happened to their son, where they are."
Just outside San Onofre, El Palmar ranch is now peaceful and still. Orlando Pascua, 33, one of the farmers working there, led visitors to the stables, where the militias have dug deep holes. The boot of one victim had been tossed to the side. Several hundred feet away, the militias had buried more people under a tree.
Mr. Pascua said that he and the other farmers were trying to forget what happened, but that it was not easy. "People say they did so much damage," he said. "When you were brought here, you didn't get out."
Oh man. With such a bloody history, you really have to reconsider Colombia as a destination. It really sounds like things could turn ugly at a moment's notice and if you're caught in it, who knows what could happen? Esp if you're a foreigner too.
Just imagine if you're held for ransom - your job could disappear while you're held captive, months could pass. Do you seriously think that the State dept gives a crap about one lone american going where he shouldn't have? It's Colombia, fer crying out loud.
Thailand is way safer, plus the food is fantastic. Plus the choices are absolutely amazing. If you're bored, there's always Philipines. Or Indonesia.

Just returned from my 1st CTG trip. I've made many trips to Fidel's paradise island, but have been searching for a new venue since the change to the CUC. That 18% surcharge on the USD on top of all the other bullshit (transiting through the Bahamas and sweating US Customs upon returning) is forcing me to look for new hunting grounds. Wake up Fidel!!!
I had one non-pro who I met online prior to the trip and several pros /semi-pros from the beach in Laguito, on the street in Bocagrande & Centro and of course in LDV and Triplaterra. The most I paid was 100k for a hot little spinner from Triplaterra (very enthusiastic!) and as little as 40k for an afternoon delight with a beach chica. All in all I was impressed with the quality and selection.

ThanksI have been to Green Moon. More of an local club that plays urban contemporary music (hip hop, reggae, reggaeton). You would be hard pressed to see another gringo in there. If you happen to be caucasian, you will stand out. However, that wont prevent you from having a good time if you can dance and enjoy the music.
I wouldnt call it a puta club, just a place locals go to have a good time. If you have some spanish language skills, you can score there.
I will be off to CTG in four days… This will be my first trip there and I cannot wait. I have done the RTFF thing going back about 18 months and I have to admit most of my questions have been answered and other folks on this thread an forum have also been very helpful and answered many questions. Only a few remain and I would appreciate any feedback on these. Here they go:
- How far is the Hilton from LDV and the Pleyboy club? Should I take a cab or can I just walk?
- No mention on this thread about the availability of performance enhancing vitamins V and C! Can they be bought at the pharmacy without prescription? Where could one get them otherwise in CTG?
- Is there a decent street map of Cartagena anywhere on-line? Better yet one with all the important places marked on it (like the ones you can find for Bangkok, BA, etc.). I haven’t been able to find one (even without the aforementioned markings :-)) at bookstores or libraries.
- I arrive at CTG at around 11 pm. Is it safe to get a taxi to the Hilton at that time or am I better off arranging for a pickup?
- I will be there a total of four days and five nights. Where is a good place to just hang out during the day and afternoon and people watch?
- Last one: How are the prices compared to the US? Is it recomemded to do any shopping in CTG for say, perfumes, brand name clothes and sportswear, etc.?

Hilton is about half a mile from LDV and both are located in the area called Laguito. Pleyboy club is about a 35 minute taxi ride from Hilton and LDV.

You should be safe at the airport at 11 pm. Remember Cartagena has the navy base and I would say it is probably the safest tourist destination in S.A. You read about murders in the newspaper, but most of these peope are local Colombians who have lived there all their life and pissed off the wrong person. I have taken taxis at all hours of the night to clubs, alone and with girls. You should ask up front about the fare, however, because they will try to overcharge if they can. Should be about 12,000 pesos to anywhere, at night.
Taxi drivers are trying to earn a living and would lose their job and livelihood if they committed a crime. However they all drive too fast, honk their horns too much and play their radios too loud. They want to have a good time and the testosterone makes them drive like maniacs. If they can overcharge you 10-20% they will, after all it is a profit motive and they see us as fat cash cows ripe for picking. This is not only in Colombia but in any country where the pussy is cheap. But outright theft or robbery is a crime and they would lose their job.
I recommend the main street in Boca Grande or Laguito. There is alot of young street action there, very good I might add, for about 40K pesos. I also like to hang out during the daytime at the Hilton hotel pool. Just walk in the front door and go thru to the back. Never have I been challenged except once when I tried to get a towel and was asked for a room number.
What is the Hilton going for a night? Last time I asked it was about $125 or more incl. breakfast, a night. I recommend you try the Hilton for a day or two and then stay in an apartment for about $50-70 a night. Mery has her email address in this Cart. thread somewhere and she rents apartments close to the Hilton for $60 or so. Much easier to get girls in your room and more private. Less price.
The prices are not much lower than in the US except for pussy. There are high fashion shops in Boca grande where you can buy things at Tommy HIlfinger or Polo shops for more than in the US. There are alot of vendors selling junk T shirts, sunglasses, etc. in the daytime, especially on the beach. You must ignore them or they will drive you crazy and you will come close to punching them out. I try to stay in Cart. for only a few days at a time so I do not get irritated too much. I can either get an air only deal on a charter on an all inclusive for not much more. I know I wont be able to bring chicas into the AI. MethosStarting in December you will be able to get direct flights from Toronto to CTG. The most reasonable AI package will probably be at the Decameron in Boca Grande.

I booked Hilton for $115 about three weeks ago (not sure whether it includes breakfast). Interestingly enough, on the same day, Hilton's own website was quoting the same type room for $215. I booked through Orbitz.
I plan to do exactly that: I expect to walk around and check out the apts and get one for the remaining three days.

Discos -
Giro Matto is the only real late night spot (after 2am). But there's really not much to recommend it IMO. Don't worry if you never get there. Best strategy is to have your girl chosen by around 1:30am or so. LDV is really the standout place in Cartagena for pros.
Remember that non-pro nightlife even in big cities in Colombia is good on Fridays and Saturdays, marginal on Thursdays and Sundays, and really no good the rest of the week.
Avoid - all guides.
closes at 3:00 am. If you are still looking around 4:00am, stand around outside of Giro Matto. There is a 10K cover. The chicas wait for someone to pay for them or to hook up.
The idea of looking for an apartment while you are there is very good.

Of course all night clubs that serve alcohol are closed also on these days. You can always try the ***** house behind Pleyboy club on religous holidays because they do not serve alcohol. Enjoy.
I don't recall LDV being closed during Easter. But I don't get there that much any more even though I live two blocks away. I also can't recall any clubs serving alcohol being closed for any holidays.
They did shut all alcohol sales off for about three days in Feb. because of a trade conference. Seems that some union activists staged a small riot a few months earlier during a similar conference. You don't fuck with the authorities or embarass the government.

I can only speak for the discos.
Mr. Babillas is fine only on Mondays. Most of regular, cartagena women inside.
IMHO Tu Candela is overrated. Expensive drinks and entrance fee´s. Colombian women with their with local rich colombian men.
If you like electronic music, giro matto is the place to be! It starts late (02.00.am opening, crowdly at 03.00 am, funny at 04.00 am, closes 05.30/06.00 am.) A lot of pro´s from LDV, tourists, semi pros´s, non pro´s and a really good party. Cover charge is different, during my stay I was 14 nights theres - I had to pay cover only the first nights. It is running by an italian guy. Also they sell pintada´s!
Important: For all those place is basic spain a must; I swear , best spain - best fun. And a little more style (clothes, haircut) is also higly recommended.
A few LATE at night on the corner and by bottom of stairs leading to La Perla Casino & LDV. These are higher priced and more used to gringos. WAY more in the Plaza de Coches (near the clocktower) and in Getsumani (but a riskier area of town to walk around at night), but you will likely need to negotiate in Spanish.

Thank you to all who have contributed here for making my trip utterly enjoyable. Below are the experience and opinions of the author, that’s me, so please don’t take them as judgments or absolute.
With the rebels, the paramilitary, the drugs lords, the armed civilians, and corrupt cops, Colombia did not seem like a wise destination for a vacation. After reading glowing recommendations from notable members, I decided to take a chance and experience Colombia for myself – destination Cartagena, a safe haven for tourists.
My excitement of reaching Colombia lasted only, a few minutes, until I entered the airport. A sniffing dog accompanied with an armed soldier welcomed me as I entered the door. If that was not enough, there was a video camera man smack in front of me tapping my surprised reaction, and behind him were more soldiers with bigger guns. There was no reason for me to be nervous standing in the crawling immigration and custom lines, but I was while the custom agents thoroughly searched every bag of every passenger. Once outside the airport, the fun began.
Spent a night each at Hotel Charlotte ($60) and Hotel San Martin ($65) before renting an apartment ($50) in Laguito, the best way to go. Preferred Hotel San Marin over Hotel Charlotte. These were low season rates.
The most I paid for taxi was 12,000 pesos ($5.5) across town and from the airport to Laguito. The typical fares were 4,000p ($1.80) and 5,000p ($2.30) at night. There were no meters in the taxi’s so I asked for the fare before I took one.
Exchanged a few dollars at the airport at the rate of 2,100 pesos per dollar. Exchange rate at most cambios on Avenida San Martin (Carrera 2) in Boca Grande was 2,100. One was exchanging at 2,000. The cambio in the Carulla grocery store in front of the naval base was exchanged at 2,200. ATMs had the best rate and were the most convenient.
The city is small, at least the tourist areas. Laguito is tiny with a single road down the middle. The walk from La Dolce Vita on one end to Hilton Hotel on the other end is 5 minutes. Boca Grande is larger with most hotels and restaurants on Avenida San Martin a block away from the beach. The beaches along Avenida de Malecon are segmented into small patches. The Old Town or Walled City in Centro is exciting and interesting. Rosario Islands about an hour boat ride away are worth a trip but with a companion.
I had a great few days in Cartagena mostly because of the girls, best Girl Friend Experience thus far surpassing Brasil, Thailand, and Romania. La Dolce Vita was my favorite hangout. The popular and experienced girls started negotiations at 200,000p but settled for 150,000p for all night (120,000 for a couple of hours). Others started at 150,000 but were happy with 120,000p for all night. Knowing the pricing structure before hand made the negotiations easier and effective.
Enjoyed spending time in both Tu Candela and Mr. Babillas. Took a while to realize that the semi-pro/pro sections in Tu Candela is upstairs and in Mr. Babillas is the bar area to the right. Visited Giro Mato and Trippleterra but did not find what I was looking for. Pleyboy was only good for a drink the night I went.
As for dance places for working locals, Bololo is great. It is huge with a lot of people. During the night, the performers get on top of the bar and dance for the audience. Picking up someone here will depend on your talents but some conversational Spanish is a must. Burladera on Pedro de Heredia Avenue is a nice romantic dance place to take a girl. The night I was there, everyone was coming in as couples. Karamba a few blocks away was not worth the trip. It was small, loud, and crowded.
Loved spending dinner time at Plaza de Santo Domingo. Food was decent but relatively expensive and I did not care since I was willing to pay more for flirting with the cute waitresses.
I just went through reading the last few months of entries... I was there in Aug of 2001 right before 911 with a group of NYPD guys. At the time we rented the 4 bedroom penthouse with a rooftop pool just next to the Hilton. One of the guys I went with was an old CTG dog and knew all of the spots. Sadly this prevented me from remembering all of the different places we went to. From the looks of the board... the only two places mentioned are playboy and LDV. I don't think that playboy was arround when I was there.. but LDV was just opening up. However when I was there there were no fewer than 8 top notch places we went. Many were in the industrial area to the south of the city.. and there was a good freelance disco right in Boca Grande.
Anyone have any information about these off the beaten path places.?
Place A) Large place.. about 20min taxi from BG.. large stage where girls dance.. not much of a selection.
Place B) In a residential area.. onsite rooms.. with a cortyard in back.
Place C) Huge selection... army came in and checked ID's... near the old city.
There were tons of other places... actually I prefered these out of the way spots to LDV where the action was much more hardcore. Surfer knew these places... but I have no idea if they are still there. Some of them were a bit sketchy.. but with 4 guys all over 6'3".. I guess we didn't pay much attention.
Also.. any suggestions on places to stay.? URL's..
When we were there we had a great driver who charged up by the day... anyone reccomend one.?
Lastly... seems that the going rate is 100,000 ..? That's about 50% higher than when I was there last... is CTG getting more expensive.?

Ender, your (B) sounds like Rocio. (A) might be Casa del Marino but it's hard to be sure.
I wouldn't call either of these places top notch on current form. Depends on your expectations, I guess. I didn't like Rocio because of the gringo price gouging. You ask them the price, and you see them think for a few seconds and then come up with something. I went on two occasions and both times the price was different (and high for Cartagena). Well, where do I start? Too long of a subject and people's feelings will get hurt.
Here's how the prices get so high. Quick examples, nothing specific.
Monger A comes to CTG and pays COP100.000 for TLN, knowing damn well that the market rate is COP50.000. Monger A is experienced in negotiating, speaks Spanish, but HAS to have this one chica. He pays the COP100.000. Guess what? Next day, that same chica's laughing at him after the session, while willing to bone some local for much cheaper, if not free (How do you think all these chicas' kids have Colombian fathers?). Next evening, chica increases her market rate.
Monger B comes down and speaks no Spanish and has no way to really negotiate. Chica tells him COP200.000. He pays after she stands firm on her price. Next evening, chica's market rate increases to COP200.000. She's willing to wait all night for that rate, as some idiot will pay it. Of course, she's right.
Monger C comes down, stand firm at the market rate, tells the hardcore chicas to fuck themselves for COP200.000. He has money to spend, BUT has the common sense to know that HE decides what the market is, not the chica. Monger C is seen as cheap, but heads to other areas to get his rate. 30-60 mins later, he is successful and fully satisfied. Or he has minimal problems with the chica, which at COP40.000-50.000, is manageable.
Who wins? As always, it's the chica. They all talk with each other. Many discuss rates. They will mark you as a sucker. If you pay COP150.000 on your 1st night down, that's your bottom rate for the rest of the trip. Chicas will tell their friends not to accept anything less than COP150.000 to COP200.000 from you. Or really, by your own decision, you mark yourself.
Their intent is to fuck someone that night. The clicker is who's gonna pay for it, or who do I like the best, or who can I milk the longest. When it's all said and done, that same chica is a hooker. That's the truth of the matter. Not saying to treat her any less than any other lady, but to recognize that it is what it is. She made that choice before she got to you.
I'm not a bitter dude at all. I've also overpaid in every market, but I accept and try to limit those missteps. No sugarcoating, no lies.
The market rate increases so drastically when Monger A & Monger B, from above, don't walk away and stand firm on their acceptable price, not the chica's price. It's the monger's option to contribute to screwing up the market by playing along with the chica, who will take as much as possible.
For instance, when a hot chica starts the TLN bidding at COP500.000, and you start at COP100.000, is COP300.000 reasonable or just plain stupid? Before you answer, COP500.000 HAS BEEN paid before (not by me). Now put the same in context with COP100.000 and COP300.000.
When these dudes start agreeing to COP300.000, is when the entire LDV starts standing firm at that price for TLN. Can you blame the chicas for being so savvy?
Solution: when you start hearing the crazy price quotes, ask one of the other dudes there what they are getting in prices, if both of you are not content, pay you tab, tell the chicas your plans to go elsewhere and that they can fuck themselves for that ridiculous price, and just leave. If this happens enough, and chicas are going home alone, the market rate will go back down. Something beats nothing. Eventually, they will get the picture.
There ARE other places to go (ask any cab driver), plenty of other chica options as well.
In the end, fellas, it's just pussy. Nothing more, nothing less. My twenty-two cents.
Here's my dilemma. I like the whole experience of being with a girl; conversation, dancing, etc. plus I like waking up next to a soft warm body in the morning. Don't want to travel thousands of miles for a quickie so short time is typically not for me. Now, I certainly do not want to contribute to the raising of rates in Cartagena but I also don't want to be preceived as cheap because it results in a marginal experience. I do stand my ground and walk away if I know the going rate.
How do I go about finding the current pricing for TLN in LDV because they seem to be all over the place on this board?
Also, there must be a differential between the average ones and the popular ones and what is that differential?

It's like my Dad taught me when I was a kid on how to negotiate when buying a car.
Number one rule is ... don't fall in love with that one particular car ... if the dealership is asking too much and won't budge on the price ... move on to the next car or dealership ... there will always be another great car just around the corner.
Same applies for mongering ... there's plenty of chcias to be had in Cartagena.
I know everybody 'mongers' differently ... my style, especially in a place like LDV, is to try and bond with a chica ... this bonding of course all depends on your spanish speaking ability, your 'coolness' factor ... yes there are dorks among us mongerers ... heck, I'm probably one of them ...
... and of course physical appearance obviously comes into play ... if you were the chica, would you rather be with the old, muy fat guy or the younger, nicer looking guy? ... obvious answer.
Once bonding takes place with a chica ... pricing is irrelevant ... isn't mentioned ... if a chica starts talking to me about pricing ... for the hour, 2 hour, TLN, etc ... like a f...g menu ... I politely move on.
If the chica is the hottest chica and I'd really love to do her ... but she gets in to the pricing, I personally move on ... there WILL be another one ...
AND ... as we all know or should know ... the hottest, and most business savy chicas are more times than not ... NTG ... "not that good" anyway.
Just my 2 cents ... like I said ... everyone likes to monger just a little differently.
Now ... for me ... back to Venezuela ... places where a gringo is still a rare sight!

A few of us are coming down to Carta this Monday from MDE for 3 days, just for a breaksie. ( got to remember my russian before my trip there in OCT )
Interesting reading to talk about the inflated prices of chickers, dont worry guy´s, we will bring our own.
Hope none of you guy´s try and pick them up at DSV this time, last time I was there my 6ft tall paisa, mona, muma sitta, she corsed a few head akes and a rise of tempreture in the place.
I was a bit disappointed in the quality last time at DSV, it was on a Friday night to, but then again I live in MDE and maybe I´m a bit spoilt !!!!

Cartagena is definitely more than just LDV ... which for some strange reason, in your Aussie thinking you call DSV ... hahaha ... but it is the main attraction.
I've been there many times (LDV) as well as the rest of the city of Cartagena.
Of course I've been to Medellin many times over the past years ... all over that city too.
To sum it up ...
... Cartegena is a great place to go to and experience the tropical setting with the PFP readily available at the LDV ... with chicas from all over Colombia.
Also the local Costenas are very friendly and fun to interact with ... much easier to approach than the typical Paisa from Medellin.
... Medellin of course is a beautiful city ... with beautiful chicas all over the place and too has casas and massage places to visit the PFP.
The chicas (Paisias) are beautiful, but are not as easy-going as the costal chicas from Cartagena ... generally speaking. I must say though ... they are very sweet people from Medellin.
For a quick vacation to enjoy a variety of PFP ... easily accessible ... Cartagena is a great place.
For a place to visit and get to know over a longer period of time ... nicer climate ... without the "drive you crazy" touts of Cartagena ... Medellin is a great place.
The winner is ... in my humble opinion ... from my experience ...............

Ive always done well there with the rollas and there are always Paisa´s there working from MDE, I walked into La Pisina and all I heard was, Greg, Greg, Greg.
My Rollar ex-girlfriend works there and is one of the highest incomers there, I broke her heart when I said my Paisa girlfriend is waiting with legs open back at the hotel, and I wanted her to be part of my S.A.

A friend of mine is doing a brief business trip to Cartagena next month and sadly probably won't have the time or freedom to go hunting in places like LDV. I think he also needs to keep a bit a low profile due to this business nature of his trip and can't be dragging high-heeled beauties through the hotel lobby in the wee hours. He is hoping to be able to "order in" to his hotel from some internet site, something which I know is very common in Bogota. I don't know of any such options in Cartagena from my experience there, nor have I found any discussion of such sites looking back through this forum (though I admit I didn't read every page).
Any tips for my buddy? It will be his first trip to Colombia and I am hoping to get him hooked!

It's a cool little island ... some dancing clubs in the town for night time fun.
Also ... though I didn't hit any of them ... there a couple casas in town for fun too.
The island is small ... just ask the taxi guys ... they'll know of course.
By the way ... you prob know this ... but the first language there is english ... though there a lot of "true Colombians" moving there in the past several years that only speak espanol.

Mery Salence manages and rents apartments. I believe the majority are owned by gringo and European owners -- at least all the ones I stayed in were. On average, they're a cut above what's on the market. And Mery is an absolute jewel -- she's honest, and really helped me out of a bind once, and she's done the same for come other renters as well. Having her available is better than having a concierge at a hotel. I've stayed in three of her Apartments. Number 802 in Torre Centauro or number 703 in Playa Mar are both primo and will impress your date more than a room in the Sofitel. I also stayed in apartment next to Mery's in Torre Centauro on 5th floor, and it wasn't as nice, but good A/C and good value. i don't remember the exact rates, but around $40 to $80 per night. from looking at web sites mentioned herein you can get a better idea.
you can see some of juan ventura's apartments at www.zepelion.com/apartamentos/index.htm. i've never had any experience with juan, and probably never will because i've received exceptional service, value and quality with mery. but like mery he has a good reputation, and both are used to dealing with gringos, so they shouldn't be putting you in a building where you'll have problems bringing back chicas.
you probably should just check with mery or juan, not both. i understand they both rent out certain of the same apartments and work together when one doesn't have something available for a client.
some options that aren't recommended -- el conquistador in laguito and the clock tower in the old city have a number of apartments for rent, but haven't received favorable reviews. you might take a look though when you're in cartagena. there are some magnificent, well-maintained apartments in run down buildings. check out the elevators and a/c first though. www.cartagenacondos.com is owned by an estadounidense who also owns a marriage agency. i've never been inside, but understand while it's a nice apartment, it's removed from both laguito and the old city. also, while it's near the beach, getting to the beach, or walking around the neighborhood, supposedly isn't as safe as laguito or the old city. finally, eddy salence, mery's belgian ex-husband, rents apartments. some have had decent experiences with him and some have not. i rented from him once, and experience was below average, but not terrible.
you've got three options as to where you'll stay. if you want to be close to the hookers and the beach, laguito is best. the second option is the old city, which is a fantastic place (kind of like new orleans french quarter or habana vieja on speed), but no beach. boca grande, a third option, is in between laguito and the old city, and close to the beach.
Juan and Mery work together. I have used Juan every trip that I have ever been to Cartagena. He is a stand up guy. I was there during the Miss Colombia pageant in 2003 when every apartment was booked. I called Juan and he found me a room at the Hotel Barlovento for 4 nights until one of his apartments opened up. The hotel wanted a deposit of $80 USD and Juan paid the deposit out of his own pocket. Had I stiffed him by not showing he could not have gotten his money back. He is one of the most trustworthy people there are. Another guy here had $40,000 USD wired into Juan's account for the purchase of an apartment. Everything went fine. he will never do anything but treat you great.

Ok so now It's Tuesday I was with 3 of my buddies and one of them leaves back for the USA, now It's 2 of us. Before I leave back for the USA On Saturday my objectives were clear. I wanted to go to Isla de Rosarios with a favorite chica and have a Menage Session or Two.
So It's kind of a slow day and I head to my favorite store Olimpica for my daily flirt and talk session with the Ice Cream girls in front of the Boca Grande Olimpica and grab some grub from my favorite restaurant in Boca Grande it's right next to the Olimpica and there is a quick street food stand in front of the restaurant that is very popular as well...they serve authentic Colombian Food for under $3-$5 (US Conversion).
Today my motive was to go outside of the Boca Grande, Laguito, Old City Area and get to the Shopping areas and Malls where people go where I can meet some chicks outside of the tourist areas.
So I head into the Olimpica and grab some juice and I run into this FINE chica who is working as a promotional spokesperson/model in the store for Nivea products and I HAD to have her. She was right up my alley, 5'8, 21 y/o Moreno chica, long curly brown hair, beautiful!So we talk and exchange info for hooking up a little bit later. Spanish is a must and my spanish is not that good but she was just gigling the whole time but she digged my swagger so It was all good. Told her we would hook up for Drinks a bit later at a spot of her choice we ended up @ Cafe Murano in the Castle near Old City that night....
So I am headed out the store and about to catch a cab in front to head to the Mall in the East Side of the City (Castellano). As I sit there talking to my guy I look at this English Learning book this Kid had who was with his mom who worked a lottery stand there. So we just started talking and It was finally someone who spoke English! Kid was 17 and learning English and I asked him If he could roll with me and my guy to the Eastside and show us around the city and he was all for It and we just passed as cousins for the rest of the trip. We head to the mall and about 45 minutes East by Taxi and now you were seeing the REAL CTG, Soccer Stadiums, Bull Fighting Stadiums, Castles, Real Colombian Street Life and I loved IT!
So In the mall my little cousin is with me and my guy and we are just shopping and I come across my GF type for the duration of the trip that I just knew I was takingto Rosario Island with me. Fine 19 y/o Morena chica, 5'5, long black hair, VERY Stylistic and Fashion conscious who is in school there @ The University and works @ a popular restaurant in The Old City. We started talking over a quick but to eat in the mall and of course my "lil cousin" is filling in some blanks with me in spanish but we basically arrange to meet up a bit later for Dinner. The Mall Castelleno is a nice Mall with a Movie Theatre and nice shops that I did'nt really expect to see in Cartagena but you can definately pick up some Non-Pro's in the mall, outside of the mall as well. There is a rougher outdoor mall before you get there that I would'nt suggest If you stick out. But this mall IS "Gringo Safe for guys who stick out". Alot of the Non Pre-tentious Non-Pro Discos are in this area like Green Moon and others I saw on the ride from CTG. Alot of fine chicas walking around for the taking If you know Spanish and I am sure would'nt mind some company.
So we head back and take in some beach action and I keep my "cousin's number" who is very cool and knows places that are not -accessible and was simply just being cool by showing us around. He had class in Boca Grande for English so we split ways but would hook up later.
I had 2 choices for the night the Nivea Girl or the Chick I met @ The Mall an especially since there are no clubs/bars/lounges that arre happening Monday-Wed I had to go for "Date Nights" or LDV & Trippleterra which of course are not bad alternatives. So I decided on the chick I went with to the Mall with and we went to dinner @ This nice place near this nice hotel on the beach that was excellent, cant remember the name of it but it's near Mery's apt I stayed in near a major hotel on the beach. So we went back to the apt after and settled in for some drinks on the balcony overlooking the water got tipsy and that's was all she wrote, this chica was playing Hard to Get but man when It was time for the Sex It was Going DOWN! But anyways, very GF and I digged her out before It was time for her to go home for her 12am curfew so her mom would'nt trip out. So by this time my guy woke up and I saw her off in the cab. Then It was LDV TIME!!!
So we go to LDV and It was In full swing once again! I mean wall to wall FINE ASS CHICAS! The ratio had to be about 10-1! So we slide in there and @ First the chicks thought I was Colombian but kept looking at me very curiously then when I started to talk to them they were startled that I was American. But we are in there having drinks and I settle in on this White Colombiana chica from Baranquilla who was very nice and she stayed Toda La Noche, gave her 75K about $35 Us and she was more than adequate and banged her out all over the apartment, blew my balls and all that good stuff.

Cartagena is a good place to visit even if you wanted to take a girlfriend there, I would say It's good to visit for 4-5 days & nights at the most, Thursday-Sunday if you are already established there after one trip. I would get bored If I just stayed in Boca Grande the whole time, you should get out to Old City and the East Side of the City to get around a bit and explore everything CTG has to offer and definately check out Rosario Islands. LDV is the Spot so definately check that out and Tripleterra and other clubs in the Arsenal District are cool if you want to try your game on non-pros and you can check out clubs on the east side for non-stuck up more down to earth chicas. Everywhere I went in CTG I felt safe so that was definately not a issue. Have fun and check It out...CIAO!

the gym Pussyseeker was talking about also has several branches in Medellin, at the Viscaya shopping center, and other large cities. You can purchase coupons good for a month or two that will cover several visits and just use the coupons for each visit. If you go to the other cities you can use the coupons at the gyms there. Buying the coupons is usually cheaper than paying for a week or month.
There is another gym on the Boca Grande main street past the hotel Almirante on the way to the hotel Caribe, in a glass buiding, on second floor. It is cheaper, about 7,500 pesos a workout, but the last times I was there there was no air conditioning only fans.
Of course the Cartagena women can give you a good workout too, in bed.

If you are walking from Laguito, pass Hotel Caribe and proceed to Bocagrande. Pass the intersection after the park, with a drugstore on each corner, stay on the left (beach) side of the street. Before the next corner, take a left into the mini-mall and a then to the right go up the stairs. Much cheaper than the other gym, but no AC. Most of the chicas are in the cardio room, but it's close enough to give your work-out an inspirational lift :-)

NOBODY has EVER told me ANY amount of coke is legal (not that it matters as I would stay FAR away from that anyway).
I have read in some places, and been told by people in the know, that small amounts of weed is "legal" (people sure smoke it VERY openly in some places in Cali & Medellin) but that Uribe (likely due to US pressure) wants to change that. As a foreigner, you may be ripe for extortion if caught so GREAT caution is certainly necessary if you choose to partake in Colombia. Also, despite the origin the quality is NOTHING like you can find in California, British Colombia or Amsterdam.

I doubt that,for years the Hotel Caribe, has been known as a very traditional family oriented classy hotel. And UNLESS that has changed, I realy doubt they will let your girls in.Peter.
Caribe has never been guest friendly to my knowledge, plus it is quite pricey given the antiquated facilities. Its strong point is old world charm. Why not rent an apartment that will be cheaper, closer to LDV and will allow unlimited guests?
Peter: This is QUITE off topic, but, I must confess that yes the mota grown in my beloved Colombia is asi asi (other crops are more lucrative, and the best MJ must be tended to by those with advanced degrees in horticulture to eliminate male plants, prevent pollinization etc.) .

I’d gladly stay in an apartment, but usual practice for me is to stay in a hotel and it would raise numerous eyebrows if I rented an apartment - that would not be a discreet move on my part. The Caribe was not my choice – my company booked me there because my usual place was unavailable for the three-day weekend. I will see what happens when I try to bring a guest up. Thanks for the tip. I guess the worst they would do would be to tell me no-go and I end up going upstairs by myself.
If your company is already paying for the hotel, you can still rent an apartment nearby. I rented an apartment in a block opposite the Da Pietro hotel. I can't remember the name, but it has an ice cream shop at the ground floor. It's on the other side of a little pedestrian area next to the Caribe. That way you've got an apt for chica's and room service if you get bored.
Approach the doorman of the block and ask. I'm sure they get a kicker from any rental, so they fall over backwards to please. It will cost around $40 a night and you are all set. If they don't have anything they will make some calls for you and get you something, again because they get some dinero.
Keep the valuables in your hotel, keep the condoms and lube in the apartment. Don't tell the chicas your in the hotel, take them to the apartment.
The Caribe is well located (walking distance to LDV!) but stuffy and traditional. If its early and LDV is quiet try the bar on the beach front, thats usually jumping, although its non monger related. Also the party buses for tourists stop there, so you can hop on and do a quick tour, have some drink, and a tout will make contact, although you don't have to take his girl - he'll show you the nightlife, try to hook you up with his preferred chica, but if you say no, he'll just ask for a couple of thou to cover his exes'.
Don't expect miracles and watch your back in Tripleterra or the Casa's, or anywhere with drunk, hungry Colombiano's!

You could also just take a taxi to "La Jaiba", it's a short time motel type place. 25,000 pesos for 2 hours. Taxi there and back approx 10,000 pesos each way. Adds about 20 dollars total to your cost, instead of 40.
Place is pretty nice too, many couples stop in and use the place to have a little fun.

Thanks for the suggestion of renting an apartment instead of testing out the hotel. Being in the rush that I was to get over to LDV as soon as possible last night, I didn’t have time to check out the rental options so figured I’d take my chances. I asked the bellman who showed me to my room if there would be any problem with bringing an amiga up later on and he told me no problem as long as she registered with her cedula at the front desk. So I went out pescando at LDV and ran into someone I had hooked up with a couple of months ago. We went back to the Caribe and sure enough, she left her cedula and came upstairs. Cost was about US$45 for a guest in the room, so there’s not much difference in cost between that and renting an apartment and the convenience of just going back to the hotel room can’t be beat. The only negative is the way the Caribe is set up, when you walk into the lobby there are very bright lights and what seems to be maybe a dozen staff hanging around, so if you have a problems with the Walk of Shame it can be intimidating, but it didn’t bother me. Also it’s a rather long walk from the front desk to where my room is, but that was ok too.

I only want an hour. For that I offer 100K(about US$43). Over 90% of the time that offer is accepted. If they don't want the 100, I politely thank them and walk. They will ask for 150 to 200.
All night should go for about 150K.

I couldn’t agree with you more about the $45 guest fee – that’s why I’ll never stay at the Caribe again. It just turned out that I had to stay there this time. On the other hand, since it’s almost the same cost as an apartment, it makes no difference to me and its easier for me to go back to the hotel than taking the extra time to look for an apartment if I don’t really have to do that.
As I am sure you know, there is a wild variation in quality of LDV chicas. Some are downright skanky and some are super babes. I do alot of construction in the US as a general contractor. Whenever I get a sub that bids really low a "red flag" goes off. I know they are inexperienced or will bump me up later or walk off the job for more money, because they cannot do the job for that price.

Just for the record, I have more than 25 years experience in South America with about half of that in Colombia and I am fully bi-lingual, including having a good amount of Colombian slang. Chatting up the chica before making a decision is always part of the game and I never leave until I have done some of that bonding you mention. Even so, good conversation and bonding in the club doesn’t always mean that you won’t get less than expected results when you get her into your room. Those are just some of my observations.

Zidaho I find touts selling sandals and massage and other goods extremely annoying. They don't just leave you alone, especially when you are on the beach. They flow continously. Some sell shrimp with lime - they taste pretty good but expensive. I have been a regular traveler to Colombia for over 10 years – I spend more time in Colombia than almost anywhere else although I did get into the Rio scene in the past few years. I know the places in Bogota very well, Cartagena very well, Cali a little less well, and Medellin and San Andres not at all.
Are you sure you don’t want to consider a stop in Bogota while you’re in Colombia? Cartagena is interesting, but I think Bogota has it beat – although I'm sure you’ll hear differing opinions from the people here. I was just in Cartagena and Bogota the past few weeks – in Cartagena I hit the LDV, Tripleterra, Tu Candela, Club Pleyboy, and Club Venus. I had a limited time in Bogota and only was able to go to the newly redesigned Casanova. The Casanova was the best single night selection I have ever seen at any time in Colombia – at 11pm the ratio had to be about 15 chicas per every guy, and about 13 of each set of 15 were too gorgeous for words. I was sitting there paralyzed until I could make a decision. I can’t say if its like that every night of the week, but last week it was truly the best eye-candy store I have ever been to. As a contrast, I also went next door to the Exstasis Club which sucked big time, so consider that as well.
In Cartagena, the LDV was pretty good and the Tripleterra was a bit better on the nights I was there. The rest of the places were a waste of time, especially Club Venus which wins my Skanky Club of the Year Award. If I can offer up here my analysis of why I think Bogota is not necessarily better than Cartagena but at least worth a night or two on your itinerary –
IMHO - and others may disagree – the best looking women in Colombia are calenas (from Cali) and paisas (from Medellin and the surrounding areas), followed closely by cachacas (from Bogota) and santanderianas (mostly from Bucaramanga). The costenas (from the Caribbean coast) just don’t do it for me in general. So in Cartagena, you get a lot of costenas working the clubs, but you also get a variety of women from other parts of the country. Many of them are actually tourists who are trying to pay for their vacation in Cartagena with a little night work.
By contrast, in the Bogota clubs, you get the beautiful cachacas but also get a good variety of calenas and paisas there too. I swear to you that my eyes were just popping out of my head in Casanovas, which is a place I generally stay out of but figured I’d go since it had been a while since the last time I was there. Also, Lido’s in Bogota, although on the expensive side, gets some beautiful chicas working there. La Mansion is another house, even more expensive but very exclusive. Abejitas massage place is a good place to stop in for an afternoon delight with some very nice looking masajistas working there. And the outcall services in Bogota are much much better than Cartagena – there are a bunch of services to call in Bogota – I have tried several of them and can recommend some that are better than others – while as far as I can tell, there is one in Cartagena with very limited selection.

IMHO Lido was the worst ripoff joint I have EVER seen in Colombia (not that I stayed long). Casanova and Extasis are hit or miss, but you can find gems there for reasonable cost. I have not spent much time mongering in BOG though, typically just one night here or there while on my way elsewhere) and perhaps need to give it another try. The value is there too, but NOT in ZonaNorte. Clubs in Centro/La Candelaria area have some hotties, but NOT for the faint of heart (especially at night).
That being said, CL you really should spend more time in Medellin & Cali. IMHO both are SO much better than CTG or BOG. I brought a hottioe from SAntander when I went to San Andres so cannot comment, though I have read a couple recent reports saying there is more (and better) action than everybody THINKS.
RW: I like that same kind of stuff, but IMHO it is MUCH harder to arrange in Colombia (a conservative, Catholic, country) than in Brasil (or even Peru). WAY less Colombianas are bi than Brasileras. My "lifestyle" friend who went to the swingers clubs in Cali said it was pathetic; hideously old and ugly patrons, NOTHING like in Brasil or Miami. I will PM you.

Shoot, I would love to hang out with you in Bogota, but its not a stop on my December travel itinerary. I was just there and probably won’t be back again until sometime in January. I’m very sorry we won’t be there at the same time – that would have been a lot of fun.
You have my deepest sympathy about Raphaela. I had a similar experience not long ago with a beautiful Colombian woman who I fell in love with. She ended up marrying someone in the US. We are still good friends and write to each other all the time. She is not very happy with her situation because the good life he promised her ain’t what she’s living today. Since I am the only other person she knows in the US, I have become her sounding board and we write and talk several times a week now. But its not the same as when I had very strong feelings for her, and the depression I went through when I realized it wasn’t going to work out as I hoped it would.
So all things considered, all that is the BEST reason for you to go to Colombia and have yourself a blast.

Lido is not that different in price from Casanova and Extasis if you do your negotiating right. What I have found is that all of the zona norte clubs – Casanova, Extasis, Copacabana, and Lancaster – are all hit or miss and it seems that they go through distinct phases where one is hot and one is very cold. There have been times that each one of those clubs was red hot for several months at a time, and other times when I would go in and drink my Club Colombia as quickly as possible to get the heck out of there. There was a long period of time when Lido was THE place for finding the best looking chicas in any of the zona norte clubs. I haven’t been back there in about a year because there is someone there I don’t really want to run into just yet, so I am laying low for now. Maybe 2 years ago, Extasis was the best zona norte club around and Casanova was just overpriced and not very interesting. But my experience last week at Casanova guarantees that I’ll return next time to check it out again. And as I am sure you already know, Lancaster is an after hours club and doesn’t get hopping until the other clubs close and the chicas start heading over there.
There are also the discos in the zona rosa that might be interesting for Zidaho to check out for non-, semi- and full-pro action. Charlottes, Mister Babilla’s, and the various clubs on the west side of the zona rosa pedestrian walkway may have some interesting possibilities, especially on weekends.
On thing is for sure though Surfer – I stay OUT of the centro after dark and don’t’ recommend any one go there, especially on their own. I speak fluent Spanish and I am not a wussy – I’ve had rifles pointed at me and have been in all kinds of tight situations in lots of different countries in South and Central America. I don’t’ take needless chances, and going to the centro after dark is one of those. More power to you if you have the balls to do that, but Ill stay in my nice safe uptown clubs.

I could email and Wire money with a copy of my passport to Juan Ventura. He is handling my apartment rental. So the question is can a cell phone number be established in Colombia prior to arrival?? I don't think that you can do anything by proxy, Z. In order to get a cell phone you must present your original passport in person, give them two photos, and a fingerprint. I'm guessing that you must do the same for a sim card.
Juan may have a rental cell phone available.
