I wanted to try and call the hotel first before I took a taxi. My Spanish is limited and tried looking for a phone. I saw a place people could make phone calls in booths for charge. I went there and explained to the young woman there that I was expecting an airport pick up from the hotel. Lots of different fresh juices, different cuts of meats and cheese, fresh bread and buns, eggs and lots of fresh fruits. Enough for different tastes with coffee or tea. Just a few restaurants open here and there and hence the choice of the Hotel / apartment is important. Are you going to stay inside the hotel at night or like some entertainment? Also, are there any restaurants close to where you are staying, especially Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday when most places are closed? Taxis are not cheap to go from one place to another. Buses are 1950's running ragged. I did see 3 new buses! All this is important and I'll dwell more on this on a Hotels thread for Paraguay.

As it was getting late, I got some beer and water from El Pais grocery store across from Plaza Uruguay and walked to the hotel as it was close by. Had hotel buffet dinner which was good for g33 mil. Prepared notes of casas to go to during the day from next day. Slept early.
Yes, the sidewalks are pretty much broken in the Centro. It is not a good idea to put 2 inch square tiles on the sidewalk. These go in bathrooms and kitchens for design effect. Some rich white must have sold those to the Government as he did not want them. I'll tackle the rich white issue later. I did not find the roads to be in bad shape.

Though Lima is a much bigger city, Asuncion basically has the Centro which more or less is a ghost town at night after the city workers go home and the east side where the rich live and is more lively. Centro has homeless sheds right next to the Presidential Place and broken sidewalks plus many buildings in need of repair. The East side is much nicer, where the money is. Miraflores or San Isidro are well kept areas of Lima. As a City, Lima is much nicer and in Peru one can visit the Machu Picchu or the Amazon while Paraguay does not really have these sights. If I remember right, I had a camp stove with me. On the Cutter, they do sell it in a spray but I use and recommend the liquid out of the pump bottle. I spent ten days in Asuncion in mid May 2015. Weather was a mix of rain and sunshine. Rainy day maximums about 22 degrees Celcius, and sunny day maximums about 29 degrees Celcius. No need for Aircon at this time, as at night it is cool. Exchange rate at the time about 5000 Guaranies = $1 usd.

Casas tried.

838 Iturbe: I liked this casa the best. Reasonable selection of chicks. 80 k G's= half HR. Bathrooms not attached to the rooms. Some bathrooms with hot water shower.

1008 14 de Mayo: Deseos Agency: this is quite the *house with blaring music and dim lighting. Close to Excelsior mall. Tried Myra= good. Is open 24 hrs and the chicks after 6 pm are "lindas" according to Myra. Bathroom not attached to the room. 100 k G's for half HR.

Some street noise as the hotel is only one floor above street level but this never bothered me. Good security as the front door is always locked and the staff will let you in and out. I was able to put some groceries in the fridge in the common area and also get some hot water from the jug, but otherwise cooking there is not allowed.

Has good wifi which always worked even in the room furthest from reception. TV all in Spanish, except for maybe one movie channel. No English speaking news channels.

It won't be girl friendly as it is run by a respectable old couple.

Other information:

You can drink the water from the tap in Asuncion. No problem with this. I did.

There are no hookers around Plaza Uruguaya. I never saw any.

There is no toilet paper shortage in Asuncion. Plenty available in the stores.

Food situation is quite good. Recommended eating at the porkilo places on the top floor food court of Mall Excelsior (on Chile near Piribebuy): Copacabana porkilo is best, and Fugaline not far behind. Price per kilo = 52 k G's (10.40 usd). There is also a Burger King here one floor down, and a Pizza Hut on the ground floor. "STOCK" supermarket is in the basement where you can get all your groceries. Also the El Pais supermarket on the corner of 25 de Mayo and Independencia Nacional (across from Plaza Uruguaya) has a cheap but good porkilo restaurant on the top floor for 30.9 k G's / kg.

I got my visa on arrival at the airport in Asuncion. Cost $135 usd (for Australians). Varying rates for other nationalities.

Taxi from airport to Centro was 110 k G's (= $22 usd).

Buses around town = 2. 3 k G's (0. 46 usd). Take Bus 30 from along Cerro Cora to get to Mall del Sol. Takes about 20 minutes. Mall Del Sol has some great eating places in the food court, including McD's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Dominos.

Best to bring USD to Paraguay if you want to use cash to exchange. Euros okay too. But don't bring Aussie Dollars as the spread is quite huge. They were offering 2700 G's for one AUD when the real rate was about 4000.

Looks like the maximum available from the ATM's is 1,500,000 Guaranies (about $300 usd).

There is an ATM at the airport (Banco Familiar) after you pass through customs and Immigration). No problem to get 1. 5 million G's from this ATM.

Do not change money at the money changer in the baggage collection area at the airport. They only offer 4000 G's to 1 USD. Whereas once you clear customs the money changer outside will offer the correct rate of about 5000 G's to one USD.

If you need a Brazilian visa you can get one in one day at the Consulate here. Need a bank statement with at least $1 k USD balance. Tickets (or maybe just an itinerary only) in and out. One passport photo with a white background. You can do the application form on the computer at the consulate which will generate a number. The Consulate is on Mcal Estigarribia between Gral Aquino and Mayor Freitas. It is not the Embassy which is 3 blocks away. If you go to the Embassy they will direct you to the Consulate. If you have all of your documentation ready before 10 am they will do the visa ready for pickup later in the day they told me. I think opening hours are 8 am to 1 pm.

Overall the girls in the casas were okay. Some were a bit reserved. None allowed any photos unfortunately. I always end up staying at this hotel, though its not necessarily the best choice. One of the biggest problems with Asuncion is shortage of mid range hotels. The mid range decent hotels are often sold out especially if one is looking for a room on short notice.

The hotel is located in El centro. A taxi to most of the privados in el centro from this hotel costs 12000 guarani almost like 2 usd or 2. 5 usd.

The rooms are very basic but clean and smell good and have fresh air possibilities with most rooms having a large balcony.

One of the best things is extremely polite staff at front desk and at housekeeping.

The worst problem here is the lack of quality internet connection. Though WiFi works superbly. The internet is down 50% of the time. I have noticed this pattern several times in several stays. The only way to counter this problem is to have a good roaming data package or get a local sim card and use your phone as a hot spot.

Hot water available and yes the the hotel is 100% chica friendly. No problem with that.

I am staying in a twin room this visit as the other rooms are sold out. I am paying 40 usd a night and if I have a chica over for 1 hour or 1 night I have to pay 48 usd a night.

One other problem with this hotel is that it has no security boxes (room safes).

The location of the hotel is good as it has a taxi stand next to it so taxis available 24/7.

Another problem with the room is no "charging" plug points. One has to disconnect the TV or the fridge to charge ones laptop or the cellphone!

In last one year, El centro has become a hot spot for night life. If this interests you! I found that the area like Villa Morra is better for day time going to malls. But for going to the privados and night life, El Centro is the very best. So this hotel fits in well in the scheme of things.

Other Hotels. One of the most popular hotels in the city is IBIS located next to Sheraton building at 80 usd a night. I understand its perpetually sold out! Its almost a wild goose chase trying to get a room there! Its in the posh area of the city close to malls.

Another very popular hotel is 'Hotel Maison Suisse'. Always rated at top on internet searches as a hotel of choice in Asuncion. I went to have a look at it. I did not like it. Looked very claustrophobic and extremely small. Lack of privacy. Only 55 usd a night and located far from the Privados. I do not recommend.

However it is very clean and somewhat comfortable compared to similar places here, although a bunch of Security guards while required here can be slightly irritating for a newbie.

Personally, I'd recommend Pizza Urbana or Pancholos over Bolsi in terms of pretty much everything. You are getting double the size of "Hamburguesas" or Pizza for pretty much the same prize, and its still fairly delicious.

Flight:

You can get coach flights out of San Diego for around $1850 and change.

The Visa on Arrival:

A passport is required to enter Paraguay. USA Citizens arriving by air may obtain a "visa en arribo" (visa on arrival) at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asuncion. This is a multiple entry visa valid for 10 years and costs $160, payable in USA Currency (credit cards are not accepted).

*IMPORTANT: US Dollar notes must be in perfect condition. Old, torn, or marked notes will not be accepted by officials (I used new unmarked 20 dollar notes).

Immigration also asked me to show them proof as to where I was staying and they also checked that I indeed had a returning flight scheduled.

Logging:

I rented a nice two bedroom apartment on Airbnb for $80 per night. The place had 24 hour security and my host was great.

Money:

Just like Colombia, the currency is in thousands, which takes a day or two to get used to. The rate I received at the cambios was 5,625 GS to 1 USD. So, 100,000 GS was around $17.50. There are cambios throughout the city. Many close early on Saturday and most are closed on Sunday (be aware of that).

Getting around town:

My Airbnb was not really close to anything. Thus, I took taxis everywhere. The meter starts out at 5000. I was getting around town from 4 to 7 bucks. Every taxi I was in had a meter. And for some fucking reason, every taxi driver asked if I was from Germany. After a while, I just yes, I'm from Germany dammit!

Beware: From 10 pm to 5 am (when I used taxis the most), Sundays, and holidays, there is a 30% surcharge for all the taxis.

Some of the drivers had a clue to where they were going, while others could not find water if they fell out of a fucking boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! Prepare to have an address and use Google maps to track them!

Language:

Very few people, taxi drivers, and restaurant workers knew how to speak anything but Spanish. I struggled at times, but that was part of the fun of exploring a different country.

Communication:

I have the T-Mobile North American plan. My plan gave me unlimited data at 2 G speed, calls at 20 cents per minute and free texts. Thus, I started using WhatsApp on my regular phone. I started chatting with my apartment host before I left. As long as I had a WiFi signal, WhatsApp was free of charge. I was chatting on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Skype; including video calls for no charge whatsoever.

Overall thoughts on food: As you can see, I ate a lot of chow during my trip. I tried to stay with the regional food and I wasn't disappointed.

First off, I'm not a big casa type person. So even though I did gather a lot of information and addresses, I had trouble finding the ones that were listed. And when I did find the right address, I didn't want to just walk up, knock on the door, and ask, "Are there any putas here?" I found a few of the clubs and a couple of casas. And some that were presented as clubs, turned out to be casas; Asunciand was a tad confusing and frustrating to say the least.

I went to Asuncion last week for a business trip but a monger will always find a way to get out and experience the local cuisine. First off, there are no American style titty clubs. I just came back from Asuncion. The prices structure is really great.
I was a couple times in Promotion & Events privado. The girls are the
best looking (college gals). I saw Pamela (blondy) and Monica. Pamela

This website is a combination of independents and casas. After browsing the numerous WGs offered, I opted to visit Spa Del Sol, which appeared to have the best selection for a casa. I contacted Spa Del Sol through WhatsApp and received an immediate response (see attached picture).

The walk from my hotel to Spa Del Sol was about 15 minutes. I rang the doorbell (which was more like a fire alarm bell than a doorbell), entered, and sat on the couch near the stairs. The madam called the girls, they lined up, and I chose Fatima. After paying the madam 600000 PYG for a two-hour session, Fatima and I headed upstairs to a room.

*IMPORTANT: US Dollar notes must be in perfect condition. Old, torn, or marked notes will not be accepted by officials (I used new unmarked 20 dollar notes).

Paraguay Temporary residency for 2 years, to become Permanent if all OK.

It gives you 0% on income tax from incomes from outside Paraguay, 10% of incomes created within the country.

A personal cedula, tax cedula, tax account, official address.

Needs to visits just a little so everything works out fine, but you don't actually hav to live in Paraguay.

The idea is that you will find it pleasant and economical and thus in the in end become a netto-provider.

Paraguay are along the way from Chile-Brasil; Brasil wants to cut it's transports costs and skip going around Mageallans Strait and instead use rivers and railroads to connect to the pacific ports, especially in Chile. This huge long term project gives a give boost to the Paraguay economy, as does Ciudad del Este as a hub for finding "anything" as in Jonathan Franzen's novel "Freedom".

As for hotel, there is a strange thing going on that Asuncion (centro) is very run down and the erstwhile Gran Hoteles are empty. Gran Hotel Armele isn't even on Booking any more, but they have a nice rate of 150 mil if you just show up. I think 1. 5 million you can live for a month. But I wouldn't stay here for a month. I think Brazil is better.That is 206 US dollars- a month! Compared that to what our "german" friend who paid 80 dollars a night for his de luxe AirBnB.

"El Centro" in Medellin is economical but you need restrictions at night.

Old City in Montevideo is also very cheap, and be carful at night.

But it is so much money, staying 3 months recurring, the Centro option might be something.
