Personally. I am OK to navigate Budapest using public transit, but there have been occasions when I'm leaving a girl's place late at night and I ask her to call a taxi for me and this is not a problem.

SIM cards you could get pretty much at every shopping malls around city, usually all three major company have shops in every shoppingmall, but sometimes there might be language barrier problems since not all customer service persons in those shops speak much english.
Vodafone shops I have used and they have best service with mostly english speaking staff, they are more expensive though but it is just few euros difference anyway. Vodafone have shop in Airport also. 1. Communication: get the 1 gig Vodafone sim card on arrivals lounge. Cost about 4000 HUF. Goes a long way with the data for navigating, translating as well as your regular emails and so on. My hotel had WIFI so that also substituted it. Easy and hassle free quick process and in 5 minutes you are online! Didn't need to recharge it with data or money despite many calls and data usage.
2. Moving around. Budapest has a relatively easy public transport system. I got the 3 day hop on hop off pass and used that to move to areas I wanted. FOtaxi app on phone helps you get a taxi from your location so you can lower your costs by first using the buses. On that note, miniBUD is excellent transfer in and out of the city for a return trip to the airport that I booked online for only 7900 HUF. Dropped me at the hotel from te airport, and now will pick me up from my hotel to the airport. For everything else you can jump into the metro, but I only needed that today as the buses were interrupted by a marathon.
3. Food: plenty to eat and choose from. And prices are not half as bad as western Europe.

Yes, I RTFF and would have been OK too with the rosszlanyok etc. But as I have already told her I would at least meet up with her (plus I have not seen her for a while), I will just spend my time with her only, which is not a bad thing.
