After reading the very helpful reviews of New Centre (thanks to the posters concerned), I recently had a couple of sessions at 33 Marques de Tomar whilst on a short visit to Lisbon.

I lived in Spain for a few years, very close to the border with Portugal therefore am able to answer your question. Clubs in Portugal are completely different from the ones you see in Spain. The typical clubs in Spain are the so-called "carretera" ones,(carretera=highway), meaning they are generally ex-hotels,outside the cities, along the highways. There is a bar,girls wear bikinis or sexy clothes, you pay nothing or 10 euros(one drink included) to get in, you choose a girl and go to a room in the upper floors.Lots of romanians but also southamericans, a few russians.

September is a terrific time to go Portugal; weather will still be warm and not so crowded.I used to surf many, many years ago so when I travel still keep an eye at the surf prospects of a place. I would say Lagos in the Algarve region is the place for you, nice beaches(a few with surf able waves),young people(and girls) from all over Europe, lots of English speaker expats.IMO the most beautiful beaches in Europe are found in Portugal. Scoring freebies there as usual demands game, looks and time, but I think you have higher chances with the foreigner girls on vacations and expats. I would offer two pieces of advice:

One: Try out the Brazilian bars (and ladies) in Lisbon. You will improve your chances dramatically vis-a-vis local girls. Many brazilian girls working normal jobs there.

Two: Try and check Lagos in the south coast. Its the 'in' backpacker spot at the moment (bars everywhere open until 5am, good beach, cheap accommodation etc). If you like to drink, party, stay up late.. its a good spot.

ThanksIf your into surf then you should definatly check out the Costa Vicentina (Alentejo's coastal area) from the cape of Sagres northwards in the south west and the beaches around Peniche (like Super Tubos) wich are the venue of the Rip Curl Pro Tour Portuguese stage. In the Lisbon area you have the Carcavelos beach with lots of surfers and all that Estoril area.

If your looking for non pro's and because you are a foreigner and apparently good looking you will probably score very easily, specially amongst the surfer teens and the girls that hang around the surfer bars and clubs. Theres also a big number of foreign tourists in those areas.

Not relating to Surf, the most important summer tourist area is the whole region of Algarve. Most big clubs and bars are in Portimão, Faro and Albufeira, the more alternative scene is in Tavira and specially Lagos.

Then you have the big cities of Lisbon and Porto that are worth a visit. Porto also has a decent surf scene.

The weather in September is a bit unpredictable, it won't be cold but you can get some rain. In the South the weather tends to be better all year round.

The language won't be a problem, nearly every Portuguese under 35 that looks educated can speak a very decent English. And yes we understand Spanish easily, just make sure you make it clear that you know that our language isn't Spanish and we are not a province of Spain, theres a bit of prejudice agaisnt "dumb american tourists" because many are ignorant in that way.

Well after the dubious pleasure of visiting these establishments I can offer the following advice:

Gallery. Free entrance, a beer 10 euros, lady drinks the same, about 30 women, most about a 5, a couple of 7s, I tried the prices as suggested, one would not go below 200 short time and walked away, another agreed to 150 after bargaining but I chucked it in, too much hard work, and wanted money up front.

My advice for new people going to these places would be to maybe figure on 150 short time, maybe even 200, more for longer of course, and place your focus on getting something your happy with for that rather than paying the least. Thanks again.For custard tarts (called "pasteis de nata" in Portuguese) you should go to Casa Pasteis De Belem. Rua de Belem 84, Lisbon 1300-085, Portugal. This is the original place and a must if you want to try the best best pasteis de nata.

For fado, I would advice you to skip those in Bairro Alto (with the exception of cafe luso perhaps). Too touristic and overpriced.

Alfama is the best area and there are quite a few good options: Sr. Fado; Casa de Linhares; Patio de Alfama Fado houses; Clube de Fado; Parreirinha de Alfama.

Just back from a long weekend in Lisbon. Wasn't over impressed with the mongering scene.

Late posting, last month I decided to try Elefante Branco. Went there around 10. 00pm. There were about 20 girls there.
