I don't want to be picky here, but the raids were on 'nightclubs and bars across the country'. With all due respect, whilst girls may be transited across Serbia, they do most certainly work there! If you do a little reading you will find that many girls are sold and resold as they move across Europe to the Balkans, Italy and some to the Netherlands, of course they work along the way. The article I posted was just one that was at the top of a long list.
You are undoubtedly correct about the UN and KFOR issue, but we should not close our eyes to the realities! The situation is undoubtedly complicated by girls from the region who are on the game voluntarily, although many of these are not exactly safe...
I have a friend who was a dancer in her home country, she was offered a position dancing in another country. I was very concerned that she would find herself in trouble. Anyone headed to Romania?
I will be on holidays the last 2 weeks of June.
I travel mostly in backpacker-style (you know ... by train with a backpack, a Lonely Planet Giude and looking for cheap accomodations. No rules, nothing planned before).
Moldavia, Bucovina and Maramures are on the top of my list, plus (maybe) an extension in Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and/or Greece on the way back home. This is only a rough plan, I'm open to changes and hints.

In the larger cities beware of the obvious tourist traps. Elsewhere you'll be fine with $20/h.
Romania is NOT a rewarding sex tourist destination, if you're looking out particulary for professional sex. All services in Romania are done quite uneven and often sloppily, and the sex industry is no exception to the rule. You'll encounter an enormous amount of bored, standard-procedure *****s, which means that you got to bring all the imagination to the party (at least then they usually dance to every tune you'll sing...). BBBut I guess you'd rather take a trip to Brasil or provincial Russia.....
On the other hand, if you're comfortable hooking up with regular girls in bars, discos or elsewhere, then you might have the time of your life in Romania. Romanian women are quite easy, they tend to fall fast, don't ask for much and can be a hell of lot of fun. And they often are incredibly beautyful. So, if this is your line of business, and you're not shy or unsecure, Romania can definitely be a perfect sex destination.

I found that forum very helpful and I made the decision that I should visit Romania soon. Next week I will start with my holiday. First I will go for two or three days in Prague and than I will go to Cluj. Have someone useful informations about Cluj. To your questions:
Iasi is in the Romanian province of Moldavia, close to the Border to the Moldavian Republic. Its the second biggest university town in Roania after Bucharest, with almost 50.000 students in a town of 400.000. You can imagine the rest. And don't be afraid of the maf. Its an overdone issue, you will feel perfectly secure in Iasi. And everything is a lot cheaper than in Bucharest.
As far as Hotels in Cluj are concerned, I wouldn't know, I always stayed there on company expenses, so cost was of no concern...:). Just go there and ask for the price in some Hotels, you will easily find something that suits you. Don't let yourself get fooled by some Hotels that try to charge you more because you are a foreigner (the only town where they tried that on me was Cluj). Offer the clerk $5, but insist on the Romanian rate. Otherwise walk out and find another Hotel. Don't ever pay more than $50 anyway. And if you stay more than 2 days, buy the local advertising paper and find yourself an apartment that rents by the day. You should easily find some at $20-30/day.

Bazau (not to mix up with Bacau..!!) is a typical RO shithole.Little mining city...no big deal. IF you are a tourist you have no business there imho....:-(
No mayor events...no great night life...and probably no streetscene or ho's.(at least not known to me)
For all I know B. is a smaller city with about 100-150.000 people,so there is little action to be expected.
It's about 130 km north-east from Bucharest. (that's 90 min drive,but Romanians do that faster I guess;-)

Cluj (or Klausenburg as the Germans call it) is a very lovely and nice city. They call it the "vienna" from the East....
If you dig old nice (barok) buildings then THIS is the place!!
Get ready for a great majority of Hungarians living there. They understand RO....but mostly refuse to speak it;-)
Early nineties (just after the revolution) both groups clashed with eachother,resulting in several deads and dozens of wounded people!

Not much to add to Johans description, Buzau mainly consists of one long street with high-rises. For a short term stay it probably doesn't offer anything. For a longer term stay places like that can be heaven, since you'd probably be the only foreigner in town. Guess you can imagine what that would do for your standing with the provincial girls.......

i put that thought behind me, and tried not to think about it. i went back multiple times over the next 6 months and had a "great time" with my "girlfriend". however, "trust" seems to be a problem in this relationship. during this time we have never had sex. she talks about sex and the desire to make love when we are apart from each other (me in the us, her in romania), but is against it until marriage when we are together in romania. if that is the reason, then i cannot argue this, because religion is a major part of romanian culture. however here is the kicker; i financially support her. i send a good amount of money to her every month (500-900$ depending on what she asks for). i spend tons of money on phone calls, and trips every month to visit her. no sex. we "sleep" together now, as in we share the same bed, we hold each other in bed, we have long and very passionate "kissing" sessions (i think she truely does love me by the way she looks at me, and kisses me, but can i really be sure?), but no sex.
i always thought romanian women were very passionate, and liked sex very much? could it be that she wants sex, but is afraid that after we have sex, i will leave her? could it be that she truely is refraining from sex due to relgious reasons? What I never understood about Romania is this...
All the reports CLAIM that people only make 100$/mo on average. The people say this too, all of them. So I don't get it how they pay for food, rent, electricity, phone bills, possibly a car, on just 100$/mo?
James never said where he found this girl, it could have been a Bucharest girl. I know it is possible to live in a nice apartment in Bucharest for 200$/mo. I know utilities (electric, TV, water) can cost up near another 100$/mo. If someone has a car, even a crappy car, that could be another 100-200$/mo payment. I don't know if people are required car insurance in Ro..but that is another payment if they are required this. And then food for an entire month..100$ or so
You have to assume the girl has a cell phone plan too...because everyone has a cell phone in Ro. So maybe another 50-80$ a month. Then Internet fee's to keep up the relationship..so cybercafe fee's every day, or even more expensive a Internet connection in her home...another 50-100$/mo or MORE depending if she has cable modem or DSL or something..
It just doesn't add up how the average Ro can make 100$/mo and still pay for all the things I see them with. Maybe James 900$/mo is paying for all of these things, and she just has a little spending money extra every month to go shopping. Maybe this girl is living a life we here in west consider to be "Normal". Considered to be "average". I certainly don't consider someone who has all these things here in the US to be anything special, I would think someone who pays for these things per month to just be the average American.
I guess living like an average American in Ro with the 900$, truely is living like you have a "fortune" coming to you every month, like Cosmin says. Maybe now this girl has 3 regular meals a day, always has some spending money in her pocket, and never has to worry about her bills. Is this such a bad thing that James takes care of her?
I suppose it is possible that this "girl" is afraid when she makes love with James, that all of the financial support will be over. That he will leave once he gets what he wants. I believe it might be possible this girl even cares about him for how much he is taking care of her. Masta, what you say is the common remark of a foreigner in Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. I’ve been there and I have friends working there, most of them in the welfare NGOs, so I believe I know more than average foreigner about Romanians’ life.
People do make ~100$/mo… on the legal side. But ~50% of the economy goes on the black market. MANY town dwellers have at least one black market part time job. Example: nurses do injections (~2-3$ a shot), teachers do private tutoring (~3-8$/h). Nothing moves without the proper bribe. Most of the companies, including Romanian, use to give special bonuses to the employees, which are not taxed but are part of the salary package. So somebody can get 80$/mo salary, but another 20-50$ in food coupons or other bonuses – which are not registered as income. 50% of the populations live in the countryside as what are locally called “farmers”. They do no earn more than ~ 25$/Mo, living in shit poverty – as for western standards. So the rest of 50% population ad an extra 75$/Mo on their statistical income. So every second family has a countryside relative (parents, brothers, uncles, cousins) which they help in gathering crops and get food in exchange. Just look around from August to late October and see how many cars stuffed with vegetables, chickens and fruits are on the roads and not going to the market. On the other side family ties are very strong. The whole family contributes to the living. You’ll be amazed how many uncles and grandparents save from their meager pensions to pay for the nephew cell phone and gasoline. Romania is the heaven for secondhand cars and black market, low octane gasoline. Driving for a week a local made, 12 years old Dacia, is an experience equal with extreme sports.
According to Ro officials, 15% of the Ro living in towns are late in paying their facilities or not paying at all and the law allows them to zigzag without being thrown out of their apartments. Their the case of a small Moldavian town called Marasesti which does not have hot water, electricity and heat for 3 years, because of huge debt the people there accumulated.
Average Romanian saves on food, buying cheap food and cheap clothes. With the exception of larger cities (like Bucharest, Timisoara, Brasov, you’ll see few people dinning out, cause the average 10$ for a meal will buy beans and potatoes for the family for 3-4 days).
Most of the families outside Bucharest do with 200-250$/mo. In Bucharest one needs to live in really cheap neighborhood to manage it. 900$/mo for someone is a dream for most of them – if they are not lawyers or politicians.
To wrap up, one of my friends living in Bucharest told me that his mo expenses are around 600$ and his ro friends said that changing food and booze brands he can do 400$/mo. When I was there I paid 400$ for an apartment and of course the lease papers spoke of 150$/mo.
However, 400$/mo for a chick is reasonable, if she doesn’t have to pay rent in Bucharest. 40$/h or 150$/night + dinner + disco for a nice chick is customary, as you may already experienced.

Can somebody advise me about the currency in Romania? For example 100,000 Lei is equivalent to about £2 (GB pounds). When prices are quoted do people ignore the last three zeros?

I've been to romania many time but i hooked up with a girlfriend rather quickly and Ive been with her ever since. I've traveled all over to include Thailand and I can tell you I've been very impressed with Romania.
Winter months (December) in Romania will be cold but not unbearable. You may see sun. No sense in going to the coast during the winter (Constanta and Mamaia) -- sick to Bucharest. Most of the clubs will probably be pretty quiet so there wont be as much competion for girls as you would find in summer.
I think Romania is very suited for those seeking GFE -- and that is certainly the way it worked out for me. As for the women being clean, it probably depends on the class of the woman; however, I think most are very conscious of personal hygine. The take great efforts, even when on a small budget, to dress nicely and it is ok to be "sexy." I once told a woman there that I thought she looked beautiful one evening, to which she replied, "I'd rather you told me I looked sexy." She meant it and I'll never forget that line!
I think, as mentioned by many others on this board, that it is relatively easy to pick up non-pro women in Romania. If you are a nice guy with a decent amount of money and you are willing to romance them a little.

As for trust and needing to lock up valuables: unfortunately Romania is a poor country and my advise would be to safeguard your valuables at all time until you really really get to know someone (like maybe your second trip back to be with the same girl). Given an opportunity to run off with your expensive camera, or cash much just be too tempting for someone. While people there arent starving -- life can be pretty rough compared to what many of us are used to.
You didnt ask about lodging but I'll comment on that. I recommend anyone traveling to Romania rent a private apartment. They are usually much cheaper than hotels and all of the ones I have stayed in are very clean and comfortable.
Oh, I remember you asked about Bulgaria. I like Bulgaria too, I've been there several times as well. However, the women are not nearly as good looking and they dont have the "latin" disposition of their Romania neighbors -- it really is quite a contrast. But, perhaps most importantly, the biggest difference between the two countries is the amount of English spoken. In Romania it seems almost everyone speaks understandable English. Bulgaria on the other hand is much different -- almost no one outside the major hotels has much of an English ability. This inability to communicate could certainly impact your opportunities and successes.
If if was summer I might pick Bulgaria because their beach resorts are better and many Romanians actually go there rather that Romanian coastal resorts. If I have time for a summer vacation in that area I'd opt to take "my romanian" to Bulgaria!

I am a person who may get easily tempted with a gfe and the appearance & passion of Romanian women. My wife is pretty much aware, that a lot of men including me may like outside service. Things are already challenging so I will limit myself a little bit for the time being. Though having read in the forum that romanian girls are liars with passion, I am feeling less inclined telling some bs stories to a non-pro who seems sincere.

I visited Bucharest in October, unfortunately only for five days and it rained most of the time. I am seventy years old and realise that at this age I do not stand much chance of getting off with a non pro. I did a lot of research on the Internet and found hundreds of phone numbers for pros. Okay for me! However I found a lady on "CAUTA-MA" who is 26 years younger than me. She said that age didn't matter! She exchanged emails in very good English. Hidden costs when contemplating Romania
Over the last month, I've been doing some chatting (as you might have gathered) with a few Romanian ladies on both Aman2.ro and Sentimente.ro. Aman2.ro especially has fine set of ladies and with a bit of rejection along the way, now have a number who really want to see me. Unfortunately all my hard work could be wasted as my I can't believe the costs involved. A friend of mine went to the country next door, Hungary for a marvellous 3 day break and told me he still had change from £400. This included some very nice meals out with some ladies he had been corresponding with and 4**** accommodation (including buffet breakfast).
First flights cost nearly 3x as much. Hungary (Budapest) £83 return : Romania (Bucharest) £201 (both + taxes)
Visa. Hungary FREE : Romania £28
Hotels: Budapest 3*** 60 euros : Bucharest 3*** 100+ euros
If that's bad enough, to get a visa you have post off bank statements, proof of travel insurance and details of the return ticket that you presumably have already purchased. Catch-22 because I ain't going to buy a ticket without knowing I can get a visa.
I could even spend 2 weeks in the Dominican Republic for the same price as 3 days in Bucherest.

Where are you from? I'm from the US and I've never had to pay any visa fee to get into Bucharest. I've been travelling there at least 10x per year the past 3 years.
You are right about the steep hotel costs though, it is outrageous. When I stay in Bucharest I normally stay in the 149 euro Marriott room. I don't know why I do this though; I guess it makes me feel comfortable in a nice hotel. I did stay at the Best Western Parc hotel before too, and they have a good breakfast buffet included in their 75 euro/night fee; however, the room is god awful.
I guess it is the mafia's fault that the prices are so high in Bucharest. It's ridiculous that I have to pay 150+ euro to stay in the Mariott in BUCHAREST, when a room in the Marriott here in the states can be found for under 100$$
Oh well.

Accommodation. In Bucharest, get an apartment. A reasonable one costs from 30 euros a day. Doing a search on Google seems to bring up different websites but they eventually go to the same resource.

Visa from the UK/Europe. It appears that EC citizens do not need a visa after all. Perhaps any UK citizens may wish to clarify the situation on what happened when they travelled to Romania.
Anyhow in 6 weeks time, I should have a colourful story to tell.
I'd like your opinions on a visa issue. I recently came to Romania intending to live here a while. My nationality (US) is allowed to stay here 90 days without a visa. I assumed I could go to Hungary every 90 days and return and get another 90 days. However, I have recently learned that there is a new Romanian law stating that you can only stay 90 days in each six month period.
I've received conflicting advice about the seriousness of this law. Consulates tell me, yes, they are starting to enforce it. However, an acquaintance who lives here tells me that it's no problem, nobody ever checks, and he knows people who've been staying here for years without a residence permit and they have no problem.
I might get an extension of stay or residence permit, but have yet to find out just what they require for it (everything's closed here until Monday--never seen a country like this where everything closes all the way from Christmas to January 5!) Anyway, I'd rather just leave and re-enter every 90 days. But my concerns are, that even if they are not enforcing it now, and even if they let me in again at the border, with the new law I would be overstaying if I stayed even 100 days out of six months, even though I left and re-entered after 90 days. Could this be used by cops/border guards to extort money from me, and what is the legal fine for overstaying? I would hate to have to pay a per day fine after overstaying for 180 days or something!
I'd appreciate some insight from people who've lived here a while. I'm wondering if I should go to Ukraine instead, where you can stay a long time easy.

After crossing their border several times over the past 12 months, I have noticed one thing for sure. The border agents have started to pay close attention to your last entry/exit stamp since June/July.
Being from the US too, while i am received with 'open arms' 99% of the time, they are certainly asking more questions and looking carefully at my passport.
Several things can happen if you over-stay. More likely and least painful is a stern look and getting your passport back without a "Thank You." On the other end, you can pay a fine or even get deported. A lot of governmental changes are being made due to Romania's induction into the EU. This leaves me to think that eventually, Romanian border control will be just as firm as Germany, England, or anywhere else for that matter.
It's a gamble you have to be willing to take.

I go back to Buc every 3 months or so and only stay a few weeks to a month or so, so i cannot acurately say what the penalties are. Nor can I offer any tried-and-true suggestions on how to manipulate the rules. I have done some light research but never found specifics. If I was concerned about my length of stay (91+ days), I'd call the Consulate or Embassy and ask for specifics. I don't know the per day fine, but like most countries, if they wanted to press the issue and make an example of you, you could be prohibited from entering ever again. I'd guess that the chances of this happening are slim to none, but it is not impossible.
As far as the border guard goes, once you're in, you're in. And should you ever need to provide your passport to an official, unless they scan the coding on your passport, you're probably safe. Of all the Romanian entry/exit stamps in my passport, maybe 5 are legible. That being said, Romania has recently started reading/storing the alphanumeric code on passports. The only time this will certainly be an issue is at the border. I'd guess it really depends on who you get as an agent.
I should make clear too that all of my Romanian border experience has been had at Otopeni. I have no clue what to expect on a train or bus/car to say Hungary or Bulgaria.
Like I said in my prior post, many changes are being made to get into 'code' for EU admission, probably even for this years NATO induction. I'd call those who know and get specifics. While they won't jail you and deport you like they do here in the states, I definately feel more organization/security/control at the border. Granted, one could still sneak an elephant in past customs, but that's another story for another time.

When I asked the US consulate here, they said that they are not experts on the Romanian law and that it often differs depending on which official you're dealing with. And that it changes all the time. But the Romanian Office for Foreigners said "Ask your consulate." So there are no sure answers. Guess I'll find out.

Further to my report of December 2003. If anybody is interested.

I read in Ananova this week about a stupid guy who filed a complaint with the Romanian government consumer protection division. I don't think there is such a law in Romania (but I'm not an expert, and if anybody knows more than me please say it).
What could be possible is that the Tukish government requires a return airplane ticket to Romania for your friend.
This only to be sure she's not going to remain there as an illegal immigrant.
So the only money you should consider to spend is for the flight ticket.
To be evene more sure, DON'T send her the money, but book a prepaid ticket for her, that she will find directly at the airport.
This way you don't risk anything.

Zinger Burger, the customs requires to see a return ticket because she will be in a trip as tourist, and therefore she has to show enough money to demonstrate that she will be there for real tourist reasons and not as illegal worker. (100 euros per day is reasonable)
Thousand of Roumanins goes to Turkey as illegal workers without VISA.
Now if you send her the money the risk is all yours. Prepaid ticket is a good solution, but she definetly needs cash in the pocket.

Her request is bogus. The only restrictions would be placed by the Turkish government, not the Romanian. If a Romanian has a passport, they can go anywhere, as long as they meet the requirements of the country they want to visit.

There is in fact such kind of regulation, I believe that Romanian goverment do that in order to avoid that somebody find itself in a dependable situation.
I guess it depend also very much from the person (and her status) if custom police will request more or less cash, may try to agree that she show a Ticket R/T for some 3/4 days only, ones arrived she can re-book, doing so she will avoid to show big amount (this is how they do when they come to EU countries)
where some countries (Italy p.e.) will ask them to show cash Euro 100.-/day while other countries will not ask (p.e. Austria)
Just one advice: don't. Or at least account for it as expenses for charity.......

I had to send my Romanian girl €700 for a week's holiday with me in Greece. As it happened, she did not have to show the money at the border, was merely asked if she had enough. (She travelled by train. I'm not sure how they get on when travelling by air. )

I'm in Turkey also and have a RO girlfriend. She's visited numerous times and the rules in Turkey and Romania have changed in the last several months.
Regarding the money needed at the border. That is legitimate however I have never heard about 100 Euros perday. My girlfriend has to show (or be able to show) $350 -- doesnt matter how long she stays -- 3 days or 30 days. She's made this trip about four times in the last year and the $350 flat amount has remained constant.
Previously RO persons could come to Turkey for three months at a time without neededing a visa. Then it changed and they could get a 3 month visa but when they arrived at the Turkish border the Turks only gave them 15 days. Now it has changed again. Currently they can get 30 day visas. My girlfriend is trying to come and stay with me for an extened period of time so I am attempting to find out if we can get the 30 day visa extended -- still doing the research on that.
Hope this help. I'd really be interested in any experiences you (or anyone else here) have or can share regarding the visa issue because it might help me with my situation too.

I am from Romania.
And about the money problem (altough it has been used as a scam by different girls) it is 100%TRUE.
We romanians in order to have a 5 days holliday abroad we have to present 500E (100E/day) at the border.
This is because a lot of romanians and gypsi from Romania go abroad and they never came back.
So this rule as stupid and incredible might appear it is true.
About the places where for a romanian it's very difficult to travel:
SUA and UK as almost 20% of the romanians receive the Visa.
For further answers why don't u contact direct any ambasy from the romanian teritory and see what they will answer regarding the 100E/day.

Yes, They rule is true about showing that you have 100E per day of stay abroad. But its flexible. It depends on the persons status and looks. Many times they ask about money but dont ask to prove. It is easy at the Airport than at the border. At airport they assume you have enough money if one can buy an air ticket (my guess).
Well, I did not send the money to the girl because I was not sure if she would come to me (in Istanbul) after receiving it. I went back to the internet and got hold of another girl who was able to come on her own. I asked her if they asked her for money at the border. She said "No".
Had a great time with her for 7 days!

I take always money with my EC-Card. You get in moment max. 10 Mio Lei. This are around 250 Euro. My bank charges 4.50 Euro. Independend of amount. The change is fine, a little bit better than if you change cash. If you change cash be carefull. Some offices take 8% comission! Normal is 0%!!!

that is a strange but well written report I am gussing you are german because of the words you used. There are a lot of short term apartments in romania. I think that a lot of romanina speak other langauges. I think french italian and english are the most common but i am not a expert. I think if you stay for a little time finding a GF is no problem. To speak with bulgarian girls I would learn russian or serbian I think bulgarian is closest to those langauges. Romanian is closer to italian but it is not the same and unless you are coming to italy i would skip italian. In romanina I think english and french will be enough. You could learn Romanian if you will be there longer it will help find non pros.

First a post is a post and i think people are more friendly to people who have made posts and show that hey will share info. I mean if i say go to the all you can screw buffet in zurich then you go i want that you put a post on the forum even if it is to say i was there and it was great or it was bad. As to the apartment just search on the internet or even in this forum and you will find a lot of places. prices 35-70 euros per night location ploted it is the same as in russia you might want to ask for a pic of the out side. and i think east comfort has a lot of nice looking places and where recommended by some one here. I think you could find one on arival but i would just pre book to be safe

I live now since 1 year in TTimisoara. I am from Germany. Timisoara is a very good developed area in romania .. and still its very easy to find appartments. It starts with around 100 Euro a month, but this appartments mostly are not with a good standard. If you want to have a small and nice appartment, you have to pay around 200 Euro in Timisoara. If you go a little bit away, for example 40 km to a small town called Lugoj, you can get a nice 3room appartment for 100 Euro. For me Lugoj is a too small town, I like to have many girls and if you do this "business" and town is too small you always have a problem to go out with your girlfriends (in Lugoj are only 2 Discos). But if you only have 2 girls its not a problem. And in Lugoj are many many beautiful girls, romanian say its the "Town of Girls" because there are some special schools only for women (making clothes etc) ...
Back to appartments: Dont tell a owner that you want to stay only short term. They will not rent to you. YOu can always go, you never have problems because of contracts etc. Romanian dont make contracts for appartment renting, or they put because of taxes a real low value in the contract (10 Euro e.g.) .. so if you have a problem with going only tell the owner you pay now only the value of contract .. and he let you go.
At this weekend for example in Timisoaras newspaper you can find some hundreds appartment for renting. And owners love to rent to german people, because we have (because of history) a very good reputation in this region, called "Banat". Also they like to rent to other foreigners. I am sorry to say, only if you have another color of skin (black etc) it may be a problem, because many many romanian are racist.
Internet in home is mostly possible over phone and modem. But poor quality. Some regions have cableInternet .. I have a so called radiolink, its a antenna at the roof.

I rented an appartement for a few days this August (really busy with tourist in Timisoara).
Al Bundy gave me some telephone numbers and that's how I got them.
The appartment was really nice. A bedroom with a good-quality bed (Queensize), a kitchen, western standard. a living room with a colout-TV (CNN!) Tiles everywhere and very clean.
From the outside the appartement at first didn't look good. But looking at the cars that were parked, I figured that this was not a poor neighbourhood. And once I got into the appartement it was OK.
I payed around 25 Euro for a night.
You can rent them also for longer and then the price of course goes drastically down.

I used the apartment. It was clean but with hardly any equipment. i.e. no kettle, toaster. Very few utensils. Not as central as Unurii square but not far from a Metro station. It served its purpose. If you only want a bed and a television it is okay. I guess you get what you pay for.

I was supposed to go to another place but they told there was a water problem when I arrived, so I was taken to Unirii with a better flat for the same rate. Unirii is a 20-minute walk from central Buc, or a 10-minute taxi ride with average traffic.
Good, well-equipped flat, phone, TV, bath, good service.

That was more than 2 years ago, since then not a single tangible report has been posted. The whole thing here is not an information exchange forum for punters in Romania, (go see the Argentina/Columbia section for what that means), but a reader's digest without any hard facts. Nice to read when you're bored on the job, but useless for the hunting sport.

I am trying to find out information for my trip but there is certainly a lack of it here!

burnie: i have not followed the romania board for two years as you have, but al bundy certainly sems to have contributed some useful material. maybe it is not as active as other threads (like threads on latin america), but my issue was with willie posting his complaints about "waffle" on various forums when he himself, does not appear to have the high ground in terms of complaining about non contributors. if you have contributed information in the thread then you have some justification. but searching willie's posts shows a history of taking (and complaining) without any give back. that is "not cricket" (to use some of the pommie lexicon so favored by willie like waffle, slate etc). from his use of unusual lingo i wonder if lives in the orkneys or hebrides or something (which would explain the lack of high speed internet!)

Romania is still quite a racist country, but this will not usually be reflected in face to face racist discriminsation against blacks or asians - certainly not if you are from a western country and have money.
Romanian racism will tend to be visible when they talk about blacks or asians as a group, and this, I think, is because of lack of contact with black or asian people generally. Romanians are hospitable people so I wouldnt be too concerned about how you personally will be received.

Both of them asked the money via Western Union, so I'm quite sure of their real names.
Just to be brief and not boring, if anyone wishes more details about my sad story, I'm ready to answer to all questions via pm, so I wish to post only the essentials to avoid someone else could be swindled by these two girls.
girl 1: Real name: Daniela Andreea Tanasoiu (told to be from Bucarest, but the passport is from Constanta), a civilian?, lost 300€ + 250€ plane tickets, lost 5 hour at the airport waiting for her and asking even police if something had gone wrong with her. Last year the US signed an agreement with Romania for the construction of military bases in Ro - around Constanta.
US forces from Germany are being redeployed here, it is not just about a threat from Iran (should there be one), but is part of a fundamental review of strategic positioning.
Downside is American GI's which may drive the prices up.
Upside, might improve the attitude/customer service of the girls. Might also mean less girls are tempted to try their luck overseas, so the pool of girls might actually increase.

Key thing is to work through a trusted Romanian associate of yours - if you are dealing directly with either agents or owners, the price will be inflated.
I dont think foreigner's can take mortgages out yet so you'd either have to arrange the loan in your own country or buy the property outright.

About improving areas, I heard that there's lots of renovations and new constructions currently in Titan, but buying in a commieblock, even nice, is not in my tastes. I much prefer the central "old" districts, like Victoriei and Cismigiu. Also given that I will only be able to use it 7/8 weeks a year I would want to rent it when I am not using it myself, so a downtown location is essential.
Anyway this is only a project. If you don't mind, as you know Romania much better than me, I'll get back to you with a few questions by PM if my plans ever materialize.

I am currently in Romania for the first time since the country entered the European Union.
I have found that this has made a significant difference to the availability of girls here in the country, since they can now go to Italy and Spain with just the identity card they all carry anyway, instead of having to get a passport and visa.
This year most of the one I knew last year, plus many of their contacts, are simply no longer here, or are leaving: for example one girl I know who gives good service was here on Monday 30th July, but has now gone to Italy...and even more galling to me, the one I prefer is now working in La Jonquera on the Spanish/French border, only 100 km from where I live! I used to be able to find something acceptable for 50 ron (about 17 euros) but this year it was 150 because I hqd to pay commision, and the quality of the girls is nothing like as good.

It's a year or two since I was last there but certainly at that time a couple of girls I had tried to meet up with were not interested once I said where I was staying as they received too much hassle from the goons who hang around the taxi rank outside and who apparently controlled the girls working at the IBIS. Not sure if that is still the situation but I'd advise caution unless someone else with more recent info can provide a more positive report.

From my experience with accor hotels worldwide it is the same price if you book for one or two persons.
I always book for two and if they try to give me problems when I arrive with a girlfriend I tell them to have a look at my reservation.

ThanksI don't know about Romania, but I've stayed at the ibis in other places and it is a great hotel. Not expensive.
the women were overall a pretty goodlooking bunch. all kinds of body types represented, but with a greater percentage of the skinny types. also a good selection of nicely rounded models, plus some really humungous racks. i noticed more than usual the number of girls with great legs, particularly the really long ones. the gypsy girls could easily pass for light skinned dominicans.

Horrible situation as far as this hobby is concerned. Sibiu has 3 erotic places llisted in the local literature, visited 2 of them and I have to report that it's not worth the 150RON (comes to something like $65)
Uninterested, uninspired, unwilling to provide something more.
Girls look good, but they are "smekere". They know how to take the $ and will not provide anything, most do have sugardaddies.
I will not and would not recomend these places at all, hopefully the lack of funds will make them more maleable in the future to other activities.

Hooked on heroin and with a small child to support, Ana-Marie became part of an exodus of desperate women from Romania that led the country to be named as Europe’s main exporter of prostitutes, The Times of London reported Saturday.
Ana-Marie, 32, was persuaded by a client to follow him to Paris, where she worked in bars and clubs earning more in a month than she would in a year on the streets of Bucharest.
Cases such as hers caused an acrimonious debate in Romania over a grim side-effect of the former communist country’s entry into the European Union (EU) and the start of visa-free travel in 2007.
A survey by Tempep, an EU-funded network of sex industry health agencies, found that one in eight foreign prostitutes in Europe was Romanian, replacing Russians as the main exporter in 2006.
Speaking from Bucharest, where she recently returned, Ana-Marie said: "The fine for prostitution in Romania is €120 (US$170) and I would get one almost every night standing on the street.
"I had no chance of paying the fines and paying the rent and feeding my child. I would have ended up in prison.
"In France I can get free condoms and methadone. I can also complain to the police if something happens, instead of being harassed by them."
The report assessed that about two-fifths of Britain’s estimated 80,000 prostitutes were migrants, most commonly from Lithuania, Thailand and Poland. The proportion of foreign prostitutes was highest in London at 70 to 80 percent.
Few British women worked as prostitutes abroad, about 5 percent, with the most common destinations given as Spain, Ireland and Australia.
