Thanks for your enthusiasm Jake, I am psyched for Shooters. Been there more than a dozen times and admit that it is a great place for a drink up, even though I've only scored there rarely. Ash - yes there are more FSU women in Dubai than in the FSU. ;) Not as many as a year ago, but still plenty (some WG clubs are dedicated to FSU/CIS girls only). Went to River Palace just to check out the scene and must say it was pretty disappointing quality-wise. I was in Kiev last week, and all I can say to those who have never been there but have been thinking perhaps I should go. GO MAN GO. It’s a great place! Even if the weather is not perfect.
Looking back I think the planning I did before my trip payed off. I shopped around for an apartment and found many companies offering apartments (ranging from USD 50-150 or more). I found a few I liked and wrote to the agents. One of my choices was not available but I got a good offer (? ) on another one: USD 120 per night for 2 rooms and super jacuzzi bathroom, situated on Chervonoarmeiskaya – nice and central but a lot of traffic. The lady at http://www.kievforrent.com/ was very helpful and speaks good English. She also arranged airport-pick-up by a very pleasant English speaking guy for USD 40.
In my planning process I had also made contact with Ash, who is a regular poster here, and currently present in Kiev. More about Ash later.
I had been scouting all sorts of dating agencies on the internet to find ladies in Kiev. The one I found gave the best number of quality leads was good old Adult Friend Finder. I got in touch with a lady living quite far from Kiev who seemed to have an open mind. We started to correspond a little and also had a few talks on the phone. At 8 I go to the Arena sportsbar and the evening begins. It turns out Ash is a good guy – charming, well mannered, positive outlook, good sense of humour and with a good eye for the ladies. We have a few beers and talk about out common interest – ladies. There are lots of them around – very nice. I am quite used to having nice ladies around but Kiev has more to offer than most places. Being Wednesday night it’s Shooters’ night, although that means it is "ladies only" until midnight. Will be heading back to kiev again shortly. Don't know if cons are more prevalent now but I have been (emabarrassed to say) been a victim of one last time I was there in January right on khreshatik and I am not a rookie visitor. Being a new yorker I am pissed at myself for falling for it but chalk it up to lack of sleep and trying to be helpful. Leaving on an wed evening flight. 5 hour flight delay (disembarking fully loaded broken plane of all things) plus 9. 5 hour flight, business meeting, drinks and dinner in kiev. Before heading hout at midnight suffering jetlag for a walk searching for cell phone recharge card. Won't go into details but 2 guys working in tandem one posing as a clumsy foreign tourist and another who convinced me as an undercover cop. I should have known better but was a bit punchy being up for 36 hours straight and trying to be helpful to who I thought was a clumsy tourist. Took about 20 steps or so before I figured what what just went down and turned around. They were gone with about 600 (6 100 uah bills) uah from my wallet. Not a lot of money and he didn't take the 6 or 7 $20 bills. I guess I would have noticed it too quickly if gone. I was really pissed but I almost had to admire their smoothness in their art of the con. I would not have felt such if it was much more costly such as credit cards, license or passport.
Anyway, be on guard when interacting with strange locals. These desperate times bring out very desperate people. I was victime of non violent crime. Others may not be so genteel. Watch your back at night and especially alone. We all have pu**y on the brains so must take extra effort in care. Do not be careless in handling wallets and I. D. I obviously stood out as foreign tourist and became a mark. Where was my ny cynicism when I needed it? Probably it was my very good mood being their the first night and I let my guard down.

7. Close to central. 5-7 minutes pleasant walk for a guy. You will bump into many young, pretty and ripe college students. There is university right in area.

Not a lot of money and he didn't take the 6 or 7 $20 bills. I guess I would have noticed it too quickly if gone. I was really pissed but I almost had to admire their smoothness in their art of the con. I would not have felt such if it was much more costly such as credit cards, license or passport.
Anyway, be on guard when interacting with strange locals. These desperate times bring out very desperate people. I was victime of non violent crime. Others may not be so genteel. Watch your back at night and especially alone. We all have pu**y on the brains so must take extra effort in care. Do not be careless in handling wallets and I. D. DLI agree with Kurenda.
If you like clubs try Kiev Fall-Winter-Spring or Odessa in the summer.
Crimea also a good summer option.
Be forewarned that the Odessan pro scene (if you are into pros) is remarkably undeveloped and it takes some work to find them if you aren't used to EE. There is a ton written on Odessa if you RTFF and AFAIK it is mostly still true.
Overall Kiev offers much more though. Odessa is quite provincial, the only real benefit being the beach clubs June-September.

Unless you want to sleep rough on a steep cliff side or along the highway that is at the bottom of the cliff or on the river itself, get something in the center of town and take taxis to and from RP. There is nothing but nothing in terms of living facilities at RP or even near RP.
RP is located about 50 meters or so from the Dnipro Metro station. You can go from Khreshchtik to RP by metro if you go before midnight when the trains stop and then taxi home from there paying "premium" taxi rates when you head back with your night's entertainment.
Form Arena to RP a cab ride should be about 20 GRV, and it can be 40, 80, or even 100, depending on how stupid you look or are. The ride back, with a girl, should be about 40, or up to 200 depending on how stupid you are or look.
On the way there do not ask those cabs standing there outside arena, just go to the street and flag any car, and make an offer. Try 20 a free times, then move up to 30 and someone will soon agree.
On the way back, do not go for the ones waiting outside rp, just walk 10-20 metres to the cabs just coming in or still at the road. They are more likely to agree to something reasonable.
Make sure you understand each other. Once I clearly agreed for a ride for 30 and once I got there the guy wanted 60. He played it well, even saying that he would rather drive me back than accept 30. I almost agreed, but then figure he could drive me anywhere, maybe to the mafia, so I just got out and quickly walked into RP

About taxi rates between Kiev centre (for example, Mandarin Plaza) and River Palace and vice versa, in 2008 the regular price was 30/40 grivnas ("Ukrainian" price is 20 grivnas) and my favourite driver was an old man with moustache with an old Ford Sierra (I'm not sure about the car model, but old car anyway) and he stops not near River Palace entrance and "official" rip-off drivers. Good and lovely driver.
Taxi rates in Kiev centre were between 20 to 40 grivnas, this means up to 40 minutes of driving from Mandarin Plaza. It doesn't exist a 100 grivnas taxi rate!
The most expensive airport transfer, that I paid, was 200 grivnas but regular price was 150 grivnas.
Maybe now in 2009, prices are decreased.
At the beginning, bargaining with taxi drivers was not easy and full of tricks and bad-manners, but after the first week, when foreigner understands their logic, it becomes funny.

I will be in Kiev on Friday for Business and plan to be there for a few days. I was last in Kiev in July 2008 pre credit crunch but it seems like a long time ago now. Is Friday/Saturday night still the same? Use the bus, in case you have to go to the city (Main railway station). Starts in front of terminal, may be, a bit to the right.
No problem at that time. Only the bus about 2:00 in the morning might be cancelled because of too few passengers.
I do not know the actual price for taxi, might be 40$ or more. The taxis at airport all belong to some kind of "Taxi-Mafia".
Taxi is not faster than bus so late in the evening.

I have read through the threads as I am thinking of going to Kiev at the end of April. However, I have yet to see any information on short term apartment rentals. Has anyone had any experience with them? I am thinking of renting something from Gia, as they seemed to have quite a good apartment, airport transfer package.

Airport taxis should run you USD 25-30. Most will ask for much more in the feeding frenzy of taximen in the arrival hall. Hold firm and keep walking till you are outside. If someone hasn't agreed to that price by then just go to one of the taxis at the curb. On my way out of Kyiv I generally have the last Russian speaking girl I'm with call one of the taxi services to pick me up for whatever time I need to be at the airport the next morning. That system has been working very well for the last 4 years.
From what I understand the nearest metro station (the metro closes at 0005-0015) is quite a bit away from the airport and you'll need to take a shuttle bus which there is a schedule for in one of Mr. X's links. One of my ex Kyiv running buddies and ex forum member Travel Male used to do this, although by that point he was rather good at speaking Russian.

Thanks in advanceIf you can speak Russian or someone to do it for you call one of numerous legitimate taxi companies. Most will quote about 150 uah +/- 25. None that I have yet experienced the dispatcher spoke english. There are a few (I have to look up again) that charge 120 uah and maybe a bit less. One of my interpreters last time I was there in January got price of 80 uah from one company (to borispyl only). Apartment rental or car service companies providing transfer standard price is about $40 give or take $5. They usually will be waiting for you in terminal with your name on a sign.
If you do arrange taxi to pick up at borispyl have them pick you up at terminial A as it has less taxi crowd and will be more certain you will find driver. Driver will NOT come to terminal with a sign with your name. They will most likely be waiting outside. If dispatcher does not give you plate #, color and model of car picking you up then ask for it when calling.
I am bummed. I was suppose to be in kiev about now. Delayed till end of this month.

My interpreter found for me. As a local who knows the taxi fares well some one like them can find or negotiate such fares I think. But 125 is very doable. If you don't speak Russian or can't have some one call taxi dispatcher for you then it is problem to get these taxis. Exchange rate back in January was 8. 6/$1. Back then I took taxi to borispyl to pick up girl arriving from sevastopol and back to city center for 180 round trip although round trip price request was made on route. There is a website that has long list of taxi companies (with ph#, few with web adress) with their published fares and fares to/from borispyl.
I will post when I find it again.

When I was waiting for the bus to Borispol at the the railwaystation in Kiev, directly at the bus stop, drivers offered prices from 120UHA down to 70UA just seconds before the bus departed :-)
Which shows the business expirience of these guys :-)
For the last 4 or so years the dispatch price for a trip to Borispol was around 100uah. With the massive spike in inflation last year the dispatch price now is around 120-130uah. Yes you can indeed get cheaper pricing by haggling with taxi's on the street but most people with a plane to catch general prefer booking a cab the night before.
I've book an apartment at one of the agencies instead of staying at the long term leased place I have for the last 3 years. To make it simple I'm having them pick me up at the airport, it's going to cost me 30USD. :P
Booty if you could post that list it would be great. I generally use the same services the girls use because they are the ones who call them for me. The girls generally know who has the best prices and services. :)

Misterxxx there are many mistakes in translations.

It looks the translation are using some online translator which makes strange translations.

i presume great majority of people here never visited ussr 25-30 years ago. even then prostitution was widespread thing. soviet system couldn't do anything about that not to mention present politics in ukraine. it was interesting than in moscow it was relatively hard to find street walkers but in kiev they were all the place. especially **** girls 16-17 years old were the core of prostitues in kiev. officially prostitution didn't existed in ussr, the girls were **** so from the law side there was not much to do about prostitution. i even still have a propaganda poster i took from the wall of high school in kiev back in 1983. it presents a young girl in the company of several men who offer her money and bottle of vodka while she looks with sad eyes at another young woman passing by with husband and children. big letters say "girl, don't be a prostitute. you're ruining your life and future! ". you get the meaning.
hey even infamous andrey chikatilo was speaking at his trial that he was cleaning the country from immorality and sickness and because of that majority of his victims were young prostitutes (both male and female).
soviet government admitted only one of his victim (the second one) was a prostitute aged 17.
so to conclude for the end. prostitution is something that existed in ukraine in the past, exists now and will exist in the future. government, church, the girls from femen, anybody else can't do much about it.

Ah, this is a subject close to my heart...
Years ago I was involved in a field of endeavour that was controversial and subject to occasional public protest.
The protesters usually included plenty of idealistic young female students and also some well-heeled cosmopolitan women with time on their hands for this kind of pastime.

If you just go upstairs from Metrograd (main entrance) in front of the bessarabski rinok and keeping the Lenin monument at your back you will see the rinok in front of you... Arena is at your right with all the Mandarin Complex.
In front of you you will find a twoo door grocery/milk shop, with passage to the Rinok (market) at the left there is a safe ATM. It's giving out money up to the limit of your card. Otherwise try the ones inside the Tsum. just a blok away on K street (there is also an Apoteka selling condoms, Viagra, Cialis and Levitra!)

I can tell you that I just took out 3000 grivna ($375) from an Aval machine inside a bank branch in Pechersk. That may be the maximum ( I usually don't even need this much) but this bank might be a good bet if you need more than the 500 grivna you recently got.

I don't remember if/where they have one in the center, but I recall Raiffessen bank had the highest limit I could find - I think it was 2500 griven.
Raiffeisen for several years now has been known as Aval Raiffessen Bank and the limit is much higher than 2500.
I was able to take my daily limit at SEB. Fee's seem a bit high tho. The fees at PrivatBank seem much more reasonable - at least for my bank card.

You have to apply for a visa to RU within the country of your permanent residency, usually. To the Russian consulate.
In case, you are on a long term stay in UA actually, you should apply directly to Russian consulate in Kiev, because there might be some exception for the rule.
BUT: You need some kind of "Invitation" before, either from a private person in Russia, or from a company. There are a few agencies advertising on the web, the point is, when using them, you should make shure, they also take care of registration at OVIR after your arrival in Russia.
(OVIR: Local administration)
Search for "visa Russia" etc. So the agency should be in your city of interest.
In case of St. Petersburg, I might still look up a very reliable agency in my old files :-)
Usually, in case you have an organized tour including hotel stay, the hotel takes care of registration at OVIR. Otherwiese, you have to go on your own to register, which might even cost you a day because of very busy office hours.
So you will have to pay for the agency, preparing invitation, and for the visa itself. That price usually you find on the web site of Russian consulate in your country. Agency fee for invitation should be about 50$ for short term stay.

Russian visa can be obtained in Russian consulate in your own country (country of your citizenship) or in foreign country where you have a permanent residency (minum 90 days). Some Russian consualtes see this as "you have permanent residency and didn't leave the country in the last 90 days".
But if you're in Ukraine just for a short visit and want toapply for Russian visa in Kiev, you will NOT receive it. Also it is very hard to receive a Russian visa in just 1-2 days. Before there was a rule "the more you pay the faster you will receive Russian visa" but now it seems the processing time is 10 days minimum in normal cases. If you received Russian visa before it can be little faster.
Maybe you can get Russian transit visa giving the story you have to transit through Russia by train. But transit visa is valid for 3 days only. There is option to get a 10 day Russian transit visa but only if going by train to China or Mongolia. This will require a train ticket to this destinatinos and also Chinese or mongolian visa in passport.

Actually Mr X, it could be me but I really haven't noticed much of an increase in prices from the last time I was here in the winter of 2008/2007. With the exception of the metro going from .50 to 1.70. I haven't taken it yet. But I did take the Tram in Podil today. As the latest issue of the Kyiv Post noted it seems like prices for stuff made in the Ukraine is actually coming down while imports are getting higher. With the speculation market evaporating prices are starting to normalize, which mean in places like the Center prices are actually coming down. Cafes that should have been bustling this weekend and today with the great weather were only 1/3 full.

Ah my first night in Kyiv, what to do, what to do. I had gotten into Kyiv early on the babuskha Delta direct flight from NYC at 9:40am. Anyone know where in Kiev I can get an outlet adapter for my computer here in Kiev? I don't need anything fancy since the computer can handle 110-240 volts. I just need a adapter that plugs into euro style outlet that allows for US style devices.

You can try the local discount stores, they usually have something as some North American market product makes its way over to Europe through the Grey and Black markets and US military.
Short of that, go back to the airport in the gift shop you might find something, also duty free if there's one.

With three cases in cities Makeevka, Kransny Luch and Gorlovka. All three places are in Donbass, very close to each other so maybe it means something. As I first mentioned and led off with, results may vary, and that also has to do with location, as in, the difference between the provinces and the capital. $300-$500 may actually be necessary in Kiev, though on my last visit, on my only night in town, though thanks to a generous helping hand from internet-savvy Life Saviour, I was able to hook-up with a fun 18 year old tennis scholarship student who was perfectly happy with $120 for our three hour sponsorship tryout.
But, why would ya wanna have to hand over $300-$500 for a day, when they'll be more than happy with 100-150 USD for two or three hours? And for 18-19 years that go to university or institute, they don't have ALL day anyway.
I guess this comes back to our differing philosphies about quantity and quality and how many different ladies you want to or don't want to meet.
Because after a good three hours getting to know someone, frankly, I need a bit of a rest, and some time to put the apartment back together again, to get ready for the next sponsorette who will be coming over later. I suppose that I believe in spreading things out a bit, in being moderatley generous to a wider range of ladies who need my support.
That is to say, there are many many lovely ladies out there that need help. WHO AM I, to deny any of them the opportunity to hook up with me, when they make the effort to come to the center, to meet me. Of course, there are always several who do come, and pass on the chance to get to know me better, but that's just their loss, and besides, wouldn't it be less interesting, if EVERY dyev who I met, was willing to sleep with me? That would take all the fun and mystery out of it. So fortunatley, I'm old enough and not good-looking enough, that it requires some class and charm, and patience, to work things out, as there are always some that are less eager than others, to get down to the bone. But for those that want to get acqainted, unless I'm already entertaining, I give them all the chance to have a cappucino, though I need to weed out the over 21 crowd, as they never seem to have the spirit of adventure found in those freshmen and junior classes.
If that offends anyone, well that's just too bad really. Frankly, I don't care, nor do I see any reason why I should. Its not my intent to offend anyone, but if the FWC's that monitor ISG aren't happy that the underclassmen get more attention than they do, well, tough titty said the kitty cause the milk tastes shitty! :D
And certainly in my own personal experience, I rarely need to wait for the 4th or 5th night, to get the best out of someone. In fact, I'd have to say that I can usually get the best on the first attempt, though once in a while it gets better as we go along. But I feel its a mistake to repeat visiting with someone intimately on the following evening, as I like to give them some time to reflect on how fortunate we both were to find each other, and also so they don't get the idea that I'm too available, but that I'm a very busy businessman, so that the time that we will have together, is of the utmost importance and should never be wasted with frivolous activities.
Finally, from my own perspective, I certainly woudn't have the time or the opportunity to bring a dyevochka with me to Odessa or where ever, as I'm simply just too busy keeping my appointments with my busy schedule.
So as always, let's leave it at that, its really a good thing that we all DON'T want the same things out of life and mongering, because if that was so, then life would really be boring. ;)

Besides, I haven't seen anybody practice that theory with anything more than sporadic success.
