Unfortunately, Cotonou used to be much better in terms of nightlife than it is now.
Still, there is some nightlife. Go to New York-New York after 11p.m. (any cab-driver knows). All girls there are from Nigeria, Gahna or Togo (although some will claim to have, or even have, Benin passports). For some reason, Benin girls do not openly prostitute or they do so elsewhere.
A few girls hang around hotels too.
Hotels are never really good value for money in Africa, but at least you're free to bring in whomever you want. Try Hôtel du Port (well-situated for New-York/New-York). Also has a swimming pool. Some nice non-pro locals often come there to swim, especially on Sunday.
Benin has some advantages over other African countries. It is poor, but hassle-free. The people there are gentle and very peaceful. Police don't usually ask for bribes and crime is low provided you don't do anything foolish like walking along the beach in the middle of the night.

I arrived in Cotonou on the last leg of my trip a bit worn out. The distances involved were not long but crossing the borders, the heat, etc.. was taxing. I stayed at the Marina Hotel, a big international type hotel on the beach not too far from the airport. I was in Cotonou for 2 nights so I decided to make an effort to do the place right. I had done a little homework and found out that the red light district in Cotonou was a place called Jonquet. I'm still not sure whether it is a street or a neighborhood but it is near the U.S Peace Corps office.
Unfortunately there are few taxis to be had at night in Cotonou so I was forced to pay for an expensive hotel taxi to take me there. He dropped me off in front of the Peace Corps office and I started to stroll. Not many Westerners around but plenty of people so I felt OK. Keep in mind that people here, especially criminals, see Westerners as being rich so we stick out and are easily targeted - so watch your back. Fortunately, 99% of people will treat you as an honored guest. I sat down at a corner bar to take in the scene. Unfortunately I think this is another bottom of the barrel red light district. I heard and saw a lot of Nigerians, male and female. Skimpily dressed young girls. I did not get an idea of prices but this really isn't a place where you should be strolling. I did see some Westerners but they got out of taxis and went into two of the discos on that street. There are plenty of hissing girls on the main drag but the real action seems to be in the side streets. When I was leaving I saw one side street absolutely teeming with girls. Poontang on the hoof as far as the eye could see down an unlighted street. If this scene is your thing Jonquet is where you want to hit at night or try one of the discos in that area.
I had to take a moped taxi back to the hotel. There were two girls in the hotel bar. One of them was beautiful but was sitting at the bar with a pissed off look on her face - unapproachable. The other was skinny, shapeless but cheerful. It was late and my options were limited so I sat motioned the skinny one to come over. I did not feel like small talk and negotiating so I simply asked her to come up with me. I always negotiate first but I wanted to get out of the bar as quick as possible. The bar is across the way from the elevators so she did not have to leave her i.d or anything. I was pretty worked up from my evening out so I immediately went to action. It took me 5-10 minutes to unload but she actually enjoyed herself. The annoyances started afterwards. First she begged me to turn off the A/C. She was an OK person but she absolutely would not shut up. Yapped about the various nationalities she has had, when I turned on the TV she waxed philosophic that the U.S and Iraq should not fight because people die in wars, I turned off the TV and turned on the radio and some rap song came up and she had a brother who was an aspiring rapper, have I ever met Rambo? That's her favorite movie, Oye! I had drained my sac pretty good and just wanted some peace so I gave her 10,000 CFA and sent her on her way. I don't even think she does all nighters because like most girls she did not have an overnight bag.
I did not try the New York, New York disco but I understand this is the pick up place in Cotonou. Unfortunately it doesn't get going until 11 PM or so which is a bit late for me. I only had 3 girls during this trip but I am absolutely mongered out. Visiting the red light districts in Lome and Cotonou I saw a lot of girls so it feels like more than 3. I think on my future trips I'll try to find one reliable girl in each town. Of course the problem is that they get attached to you. I'll let you guys know.
Also I forgot to mention. If you plan on traveling in this part of the world, it would be a good idea to go to Walmart or similar and buy little sampler kits of toiletries or make-up. If you find a girl that treats you right, instead of overpaying and spoiling the market she would appreciate such a gift. Things you would find common such as talc, deodorants, maybe packaged up would be a nice touch.

Thanks for another informative report.
A quick comment about hotels requiring that girls leave their ID at the front desk before going up to your room - it's actually a good idea, and the hotels are doing it for your protection, not to check up on you. Remember, Africans have a more relaxed, natural view about sex and prostitutes than Westerners, and the front desk staff could care less about a guest's social life, unless the result is a trashed hotel room the next morning.
I stayed at the Tiama Hotel in Abidjan once for several months and always felt annoyed about having to have the girl leave her ID at the front, until one time I had a dispute with a young lady who tried to grab something and run away. I called the front desk and they made her give back what she had taken before they would give her back her ID, and her name was then entered on a "do not allow entry" list at the front desk for future reference, so that future mongers don't have the same hassle.
Visited Cotonou in June. After 2-3 days wondering, I asked the hotel reception boy that how I can use a condom!! He, understood and promised to send a girl in my room. The girls was sort of Ok, too thin but with big tits. She was nice and gentle and fully cooperated. Though price was not negotiated before I gave her 20,000 CFA, which she accepted with thanks.

Was in Benin early November, and end of November again, for a week each time. Stayed at Hotel Marina (ex Sheraton). Very girl friendly, and plenty of girls.
Leave Hotel towards the pool area and turn immediately left when leaving the main building. Walk along the terrace along the building, go down the stairs at the end of the terrace, and walk along the service road towards the barrier of the hotel service entrance. you will find a wide variety of Beninoise ("en jupe et pas en bouteille" as the local beer is also called beninoise) willing to join in fun.
Otherwise, hang around the front entrance of the hotel, most girls going to the casino will walk up the main road from the main entrance after 10pm, or just go directly to the Casino itself.
Alternatively, take a motorbike "taxi" to the Hotel du Port, maybe 10 minutes away. Go to the Atlantis Night Club. Again, its your choice to enjoy.
Everyone will be happy to join you at the hotel. LOCK your things away however, empty pockets of whatever is not locked away in a suitcase, and negotiate a price first. It is popular to make a racket late at night to negotiate a fee should you not have done so prior to inviting the girls in. They will shout so so loud that the security guards (on each floor there are several) will converge immediately. Then, you will owe everyone a tip of some sort.
Many hotels have large numbers of Belgian military, on temporary assigment in Benin for military co-operation. Large groups of these soldiers roam these sites and occasionally after midnight, you will not find a soul left.

I am Korean, and I am going to Benin after visiting Burkina Faso and Togo in August. I got Burkina and Togo visa from France Embassy in Korea, but not for Benin.
Some people tell me that I can get the visa upon arrival at Cotonou airport, is it true? I will be in all the African nations for business purpose.
Can anyone help?

Make sure you go to any African country with a visa if it is a requirement otherwise the immigration will suck you dry out of your money.

Sorry for the late reply. Hope this posting will be useful for you and in time.
With regard to your question, I personally prefer Burkina becuase I used to live there, so I am quite familiar with the country. I can say that amongst the 3 countries, Burkinabe (yes, this is the adjective for Burkina Faso) are the most kind.
There are 3 types of places you can try to meet ladies.
1. Discos
Not recommended. The locals in these places are pros. The foreigners in these places are mostly living in that country. You can see many students but they would not be available for the kind of relationship we are seeking. In any case, you would be looking for Africans, and they are mostly pros.
2. Maquis (local restaurants)
Highly recommended. Although pros are present in these places also, there are many semi-pros also. If you are lucky, you can meet ladies who come there to enjoy. You will be surprised by the number of girls approaching you asking to join you.
3. Hotel
When everything fails, just go back to your hotel and take a seat by the pool or in the bar-restaurant, and you will be approached by semi pros or some college kids needing some money for their tuition fee or books or whatever.

Hôtel du Port has renovated some rooms but got marginally pricier at 550 euros for 7 nights. The large swimming pool was its major assets because it used to attract local girls especially on Sundays. Now this too has gone quiet. Less and less people are coming to Cotonou and the night-life is dwindling. The only positive consequence is that girl prices may have gone as far down as 10000 CFA. That's under one sixth of 100 euros, say around 18 euros. I didn't bother to ckeck, I had my girl waiting for me and I was on another business.
The biggest pain in the neck is transportation. Hôtel du Port is a ten minutes' walk from a square where lies the main disco (New York - New York) and two first-rate restaurants. Only you're not supposed to walk after dark so there's nothing for it but to use what goes for a taxi, i.e. the run-down car waiting outside the Hôtel. If there's one waiting that is, because if you're out of luck there's none and there's nothing the hotel can or will do about it. Since there's no competition, you can't bargain. Four euros for a 3 minutes's drive, four euros to get back: that's already more than the price of the meal (if you go to one of the two restaurants) and nealy half the price of the girl. Once we remained stranded in the restaurant because the "taxi" had driven away. We had to use one of the many "zemi-johns", i.e. motocycle-cabs.
Zemi-Johns are very cheap and are found everywhere but I don't regard them as an option because they have too many accidents, many of which involving heavier vehicles. I'll bareback any reasonably healthy-looking girl in Africa or elsewhere, have been doing so for over a decade now actually, but I've seen too many broken faces in Africa to consider motocycles as a means of transportations, if I die or get crippled let me do so for the sake of pleasure, not for the sake of getting to a damned restaurant. Beninese consider motocycle cabs dangerous as well but they have no alternative.
This being said, for people with their own transportation (plus their own house etc.), Benin can be a paradise. A place to retire on a reasonable pension, unmolested by holiday mongers like myself.
Back from Cotonou today and nothing to add or retract from my previous post except that I would not longer recommend Hotel du Port. I was told the owner's mother (!!) insisted that girls on the game should no longer be allowed around the pool. Now I understand why the pool scene looked so dead compared to what it was years ago.
I'm told the ex-Sheraton (can't remember the name right now, very near to the airport) is now the place to meet girls. Expensive though (130 dollars upwards).
I was in New York disco at half past midnight on a week-day and there were no more than 5 girls present, none of them stunners.
Was in Cotonou about three months ago. Small weekend trip from Lagos. Sheraton was way to expesive for us. We stayed at the Croix du Sud. Great place, all bungalows so you don't have reception looking over your shoulders. The guy showing us the rooms even offered to bring us girls!
There is a diso on site that is very lively.

If you're planning to visit Benin, don't do so without getting some update on the energy situation. Cotonou is plagued by power cuts right now. Even mobile phone operators can't maintain service levels. Visitors fall back on the few hotels equipped with electricity generators. Prices go up. Food is scarce, expensive or gone bad.

planned on spending four days in cotonou, a short stay, but this is all that time would permit. travelled with abc transport from accra, ghana, was informed, it is normally a seven hour journey. this was not the case. thirteen hours later i arrived in cotonou, exhausted and frustrated with the delays at the border crossings.
visa
please note: border control will only issue a 48hr transit visa, cfr12 000 on arrival. once in cotonou you will have to visit immigration and once again apply, and pay yet again for an extended visa which can take up to two days to process, valid for 30 days. bribing the staff will certainly speed up matters.
getting a visa at the togo, benin border was not an issue, just trucking, brought us all to a standstill for four hours or so. i had to get an extended visa in cotonou which cost me much frustration and certainly wasted a whole day of my precious time. it certainly pays to get visa before you travel. in my case i had not committed to going to benin, only once in ghana, did i decide.

the bus drop point is next to the national football stadium. once alighted, by now dark and not a taxi in sight, all i saw were bikes, known locally as zemijans.(motor bike taxi, the riders in yellow shirt) . a helpful soul pointed out a nearby hotel:

this hotel comes highly recommended, the staff were overwhelmingly friendly and helpful. the food although good, was somewhat pricey. the visitor will immediately notice the lack of restaurants and take aways, at least visibly. seems cotonou, benin is slow to shed its marxist/leininist past, unless you with a local you will not find any eateries around town. cotonou itself is a bustling, buzzing town . imagine a thousand lancaster bombers circulating overhead. the sound during daytime. zemijans.... zemijans in their thousands. to ride them, expect to pay anything from cfr200 to cfr500 at the most. at first the visitor is wary of this mode of transport but very quickly grows to love it, i know i did. there are safety considerations, but it is down to how comfortable you feel, and of course, you simply have to get around, add to this, the biggest plus, airconditionning lol.

i arrived in cotonou, roughly 8pm saturday, freshened up and had a bite to eat - there were power outages at regular intervals whilst i was eating, they ceased for the remainder of my time in benin. planned to take a nap and head off to new york club at midnight. i set my alarm, put my head down, all the while i heard music coming from the god`s above. i opened my eyes and it was daylight. fuck!...saturday night blown. must have really been tired. the music i had heard had been coming from the bar on top of the hotel, so after all it was not my imagination.
after breakfast i wanted to do some sightseeing, plucked up the courage to stop a zemijans. the town is fairly drab. since it was sunday the driver kept mentioning something which sounded like, flag? i gestured to him, yeah..yeah, just ride. we arrived at the beach, many thousands of bikes and people about. had a few beers, jumped back on the bike and told the driver to take me to new york club, i wanted to see. once there, i asked a chap who let us in if they open on sundays, affirmative, they did, he mentioned a charge at the door which i forget.
at midnight i went to new york, the guy supposedly charging entrance was awol, so i nipped inside. for a sunday night i was somewhat surprised at the turnout. did not do a headcount but the chicks were well represented for work, excellent. i was an early bird, dozens of guys arrived later. before i could settle a tall nigerian chick pounced on me, gave her short shrift as i wanted her to buzz off. she eventually did, when it became apparent i was not going to buy her a drink, i felt nasty but she was not to be my choice, and don`t forget the price of beer. a tough with cigar,was doing his best to smoke me out, had to move. i think he was part of management.

100 euros = 65000 CFA. (CFA = Communauté Financière Africaine, I think). You can pay everywhere in euros and you get the change in CFA, provided the euro denominations are neither less than 20 nor more than 100. It's a set exchange rate give or take 1%, so don't accept anything substantially less than the above rate.
This time I was at New York New York later into the night (1 o'clock) on a Thursday. Shortly after one the girls starting streaming in. Female/male ratio about 10/1. As I wrote before though, the quality of the girls is nowhere near what I experienced in the Cameroons of the Ivory Coast. Unless you like chubbier, bigger-breasted girls. If you are in Cotonou a visit to the lacustrian town of Ganvié is a must. Taxi return trip on the same day from Cotonou = 20000 CFA. Price for the boat + guide on the lake 11000 CFA. In Ganvié I was shown around one of the "hotels" on the lake. Astonishingly clean and with toilet and electricity. Price 5000 CFA a night (15 euros). The guide only smiled when I inquired but the taxi driver told me it was definitely possible to have girls brought to your room on by the lake-dwellers. Sex among the Ganvié lake-dwellers, that must be fun! Best tried out with a buddy for shared fun.
The previous poster mentioned Croix du Sud as a good hotel. Alas it is no more. Like Hôtel de la Plage, it is one of the old-style hotels that vanish without being replaced by anything really like it. There's a new Ibis right next to Novotel. Clean but cramped rooms, no atmosphere. I heard Omar Ghadaffi has invested heavily in hotels and real estate in Cotonou. He apparently owns Benin Marina (former Sheraton). Benin is one of the non-predominantly Muslim African countries he has tried to buy off, with some but not unlimited success.
Regarding hotels the pattern of one hotel being built only at the cost of two older one disappearing is typical of Africa. The overall supply of hotel accommodation doesn't increase so prices are those of major European cities. Cheap and safe transportation is absent (see my previous post). The lucky people are usually those working for ONGs, they have all they need (vehicles, hotels) paid for them.
The Beninese are gentle and welcoming. For a group of hard trekkers who pool resources to hire a vehicle and go inland such a country mus be a bonanza of experiences, including mongering ones. For the typical hotel-bound monger like me, not much of a destination.

The hottest action in Cotonou takes place at Jonquet. There is street action with short time room of the lady. Around Soweto bar. And there are short time hotels for ladies not having a room for herself. Unfortunately, the scene has been taken over by Nigerian ladies who are quite agressive and very businesslike. You could find Benin ladies in night clubs like 2001, also in Jonquet. The night club with most action is New York. There is street action there also. At Hall des Arts, but also here Nigerains are the majority. At Jonquet you could have a quicky for less than 5. 000 CFA, but usually for Yowo (whites) it will be 5. 000.
I will be in Cotonou next week. I will stay at the Novotel. Do you have more info on the hotel (GF?) and chicks to be found overthere (in the hotel or in the area)?

In Benin most of the hotels are Girl Friendly. Novotel being 5* there should be no problem. As far as getting someone is concerned that should not be a problem. Plenty of options, massage parlours, or Bars of 5* hotels like Hotel Benin Marina. You can even check with Okada Riders (motocycle taxi) and they should be able to guide you. Only thing to keep in mind is the amount you pay. Do not overpay.

Do you mean that there is no girls at the novotel bar? I do not think there are more than sporadic opportunities at hotel bars in upscale hotels in Cotonou, unless there is a night club at the hotel. As I wrote before, the place with most action is New York New York (inside and outside). If you like it rough, you might also try Jonquet. A night club I like is the 2001 in Jonquet, although on weekends there are more couples than single women. There has always been some street action at the coastal boulevard and the airport road.

A quick update about my stay in Benin last week. I have nothing to say about Port-Novo, where I stayed for a few days because I had too much work, but will give you a few tips about Cotonou.
About the hotels, I can tell you that the Hotel du Port (rooms just average, but a nice pool and restaurant) is guest-friendly. As often in Africa, you always find a way to bring a girl to your room. I asked at the reception and they said ok, but only if the girl gives her I'd. Few hours later, when I came back with a girl with no I'd, she could get in without any problems.
The girls:
Girls are very easy to get. Non-pros are always open for a chat and it does not seem too difficult to put them in your bed if you want. I did not have enough time and availability to do so, but I chatted a few girls in the street and waitresses and it was not long before I had telephone numbers. But as I said, it was in vain as I did not used them. Some girls are very good looking and if you speak enough french, you will see that some of them are even not too silly.
I went to "New York", which seems to be one of the spots for WG. I stayed there few hours on a Saturday night and there was a good croud. Some local guys, lebanese and a few white guys were there, surronded by 20. 30 girls to be picked.

About clubs in Cotonou :
- "NewYork-NewYork" is still running and it's the famous club with girls. Some times you can get there and find like 20 girls on the dance-floor without any guy. Some times I like to go there with friends just for dance, it's also possible. And all the girls who recognize me are always very discreet and respectful. Just stay alone 1 min at the bar and girls are starting to come. Please, never take the first one, cause if she comes as fast it's because something's wrong in my opinion.
- "2001" is the club of Jonquet, and also with a lot of girls, but they don't come directly to you, they are a little bit more difficult to get. I mean, you need to talk more than 1min to get them. Good music as-well, sometimes I can go there even with my wife cause I know that girls are respectful. Actually, they are respectful and discreet cause I've always been like that with her. I prefer give more money and stay peace of mind when I go out with my wife.

I relaxed on Friday, the first day we arrived in Cotonou and focused on taking care of business. I also needed the rest. Saturday, I awoke refreshed and took in Porto Novo, the administrative capital of Benin. Later that night, I took in Cotonou night life. I toured all the night clubs and eventually settled on New York. The others were either dead, karaoke joints best suited for couples night out, or just packed full of local fellas who enjoyed smoking way too much (I could not breath in this one club I stepped inside for just a minute) and where there were way too few ladies. I also checked out this club called Century 2000. It seemed to be a gentlemen's club but I did not notice too many ladies inside so I bailed after only a precursory 30 second look about. This club though is right near another karaoke joint, a strip club, and a brothel (just a ways on the next block). I might just have to check it out although I do not generally like the brothel experience (only in Bali was it really nice). Update: I judged 2000 too soon as it does get more action much later. Also, the brothel is mostly Nigerian chicks and I couldn't get away quick enough on the moto!
New York was packed with honeys on the inside and quite a few ladies outside. I ended up linking up with a Nigerian chick who turned out to be a lousy fuck. Jonquet Strip
The Jonquet Strip runs along Rue des Cheminots. On my 1st visit, I instantly fell in lust with a hot Nigerian chick. I wanted to sit down, have a beer & chat with her. The biggest & best known bar on the Jonquet Strip is Le Soweto. As in Playboy, the girls are mostly Nigerian, but the quality is lower. A few visits & a few beers (800 CFA for large Flag) later, I finally hooked up with a Soweto girl I fancied. The new girl was reluctant to visit my hotel, but a more experienced colleague convinced her to take the plunge (20000 CFA for 2 hours).

Maquis Hall des Arts
The open air bar outside Hall des Arts attracts plenty of customers any day of the week. Girls are either sitting at the bar, or sitting or standing in the area next to the bar, depending on whether they have money to buy a drink. LOL
Talking about drinks prices, I was charged 1000 CFA for a large Flag on my 1st visit. On a subsequent visit, a different waitress only charged me 800 CFA for the same beer. I eventually found out the local price was actually only 600 CFA. LOL
On the plus side, the overcharging waitress called a girl answering my specs (skinny, no kids) when none of the available girls appealed to me. While her face was a tad disappointing & her hair was a mess, the body looked spectacular.
Except on the weekend, I never spotted another white guy at the maquis.
New York! New York! & other clubs
I spent the weekend partying at New York! New York!, a disco with a circular dance floor fronted by a mirror, and very expensive drinks (small Flag: 3000 CFA). Beer is 10x more expensive than in the maquis right outside!
There were plenty of girls I'd never spotted at the maquis. Strangely, the club was more crowded on Friday than on Saturday. I later found out that the most happening place in Cotonou is now Le Calypso. Other places mentioned by the girls were Le Pacha & Le Tabou.
Talent Mix
Half of the girls I fucked in Cotonou were Nigerian. I also banged girls from Niger, Côte d'Ivoire & Togo. Cameroonian meat was also on the menu.
I read claims that there were no local girls working in Cotonou. One girl told me Beninese girls had a reputation for being thieves, and often lied about their nationality. As I posted about Lomé, Togo, there were absolutely no redeeming features (besides people being genuine and place bruh safe).
Cotonou was much worse than Lomé. I couldn't wait to get out of there. Ugh. There are literally 1000 of places better than these two cities.
Stay away and don't waste your time and money.

Whats up ISG folks.
So I landed in Benin yesterday and I went to get a sim card as it's my first time. It took a hell of a long time to get it but the lady seemed really sweet so I chatted her up. Turns out she is local (obviously) but somehow speaks good English. However, after I had gotten my sim card and was going away, I noticed that she saved her number on my phone and took note of my new number.
Once I came back to the hotel, I found she already texted me. A little fishy but I didn't think MTN customer service girls were straight up WGs. So I also chatted back with her. What do you do, when do you leave etc etc went on. I especially made sure that I text her only from the whatsapp that I use specifically for mongering. So. I think she might have gotten the misconception that we were romantically involved. I have seen a lot of crazy stalkers on Youtube so I just hope she isn't one to find new ways to make my life hell as she has my passport copy from the MTN store.
Anyway she did tell me that she got tested and she is negative. She also offered that she will go with me to the hospital to get tested and show me that she's negative if its needed. I didn't push for it as it seems really rude and fucked up, but secretly, yes, I wish she could do that just to get this thing over.
I am thinking about getting tested tomorrow at the hospital to start PEP. I honestly couldn't find even a hospital open on Sunday, my taxi driver took me to some spot near to my hotel and I made friends with a nurse guy there who asked me to come back tomorrow and he'd help me. So, just to be 100% sure, I am thinking of getting started on PEP but it might be an overkill. But then again living with this for the rest of my life seems pretty daunting.

Me and her went to the hospital to get tested and I'm surprised that they don't have rapid tests here, the results come out tomorrow and we have to go there physically to collect the results too. So, I have to bear with this for another day. The lady was surprisingly cool during this whole thing which again made me very suspicious. I have come to make a few good friends who speak English, mainly a taxi guy and also one of the doctors who is young. I tipped them enough for them to stay by my side to make sure there is no hanky panky scene at the hospital and so everything stays under control.
Now after I came back from the test, I found a message from the girl asking me politely for "rent money" as she is running low and she says she is embarrassed to ask me for this and doesn't want to inconvenience me. That being said, I think I've learnt my lesson the hard way never to risk this kind of thing in Africa. I've been in Africa 10 years now, I can do business here and deal with all kinds of corruption & what not but I think the girls are a bit much for me. So, as per the advise of senior members down below as well, I think I'm going to stick with safer places like Dubai's MR reports LOL.
