Hey,
Can anyone tell me whats going on in Freetown these days? Seems its been too quiet, whats the situation at Paddys et al.?

Well I don't think I'm cluttering up this thread by posting a very old experience . . . I suppose nowadays Freetown is a very diferent place. So I'll add a report anyway, out of date though it is.
I was there about 9 years ago, travelling for work. The city itself was typically West African - utter chaos, but quite charming if you are prepared to accept you're not in London or Paris.
I was staying at a Hotel called the Mammy Yoko. It was about the only choice for foreigners, even so it still lost power most nights.
There were several girls on permanent duty in the bar, who would approach you and just chat, offer their services but not hassle you if you weren't interested.
So, one night I decided to partake of the offer, and if memory serves me, went with a girl called Joyce. She was maried, had a child, told me all this up front. It cost $50, there wasn't any time limit discussed.
How can I describe her? Pretty - petite, very dark. Imagine the kind of girl you see running the 100 metres in an athletics competition. Nice.
In my room, she took a shower, and while I did the same, she put her clothes back on. Strange, I thought, has she changed her mind? Nope. She did it so I could take them off for her. Good girl!
Everything was on the menu, and once we got going she was pretty wild, and really into it. Having done the cursory checks for obvious 'problems', there was plenty of oral.
I had her sitting on the edge of the bed, with me kneeling on the floor. Good position, I like the view. She worked hard to keep me on the boil, but made sure I didn't go off too quickly, as she wanted to cum herself, which she did.

Wow, I am happy to hear that things are getting back to normal in Ftown. I spent many moons there in the early 90's and enjoyed the ladies. There was a nice beach bar scene then and Mammy Yoko was the deluxe hotel but there were other options that had a lot more appeal.
Anyway, this is just to say please keep an open mind about going to Sierra Leone. It will grow on you if you give it a chance. The people are what makes it great, and the availability of lovely young pussy doesn't hurt any either! Also happy to know that there hasn't been much price inflation either.

Sierra Leone is a former British colony where the official language is English, although most people speak their tribal language and Crio, a pidgin-English mixture of words from English and several other languages.
Not only is it not French-speaking, but realistically you'll find less French spoken here than most West African countries.

Last week, an Australian policeman was released from jail, after charges for sexually assaulting a minor were set aside by an Appeals Court. It was an interesting case . Halloran, the guy at the cente of this controversy, seems to claimed that he was convicted on trumped up charges. Perhaps he was innocent, after all.
Does anyone in Freetown ( or anyhere else) have anything that would shed any light on this particularly intreseting drama.

If you are a strict monegerer, not looking for historical sites, wildlife and all that other mallarkey, then freetown is a GREAT place! It is now secure. The war is over. Things are moving on. But, most importantly, the having is there. If you into african women of all shapes and sizes, then this the place for you. There are some decent hotels here, some wonderful restaurants, the only drawback is the relative scarcity of nightspots. But those few are jumping with babes. You can pick anything you want here. Relatively cheap. Le40,000 (US$12) for a night. But also they are very friendly and willing to give true GFE. Just expect to leave a little something when you finnish.

you know the essentials already: Exotic girls!
But the country (or rather the capital city Freetown as there is no point venturing beyond unless you are into diamonds or bird watching (real birds, that is, the ones who fly).
The beaches south of the capital (count 15-45 minutes driving on quite tough dirt roads) are excellent and the best of West Africa. Forget Gambia and the Senegal. There is one bay after the other with clean white sand, even cleaner blue water and palm-lined; most of them developed in some way but still more or less empty even on weekends. Development ranges from Cotton Club at Lakka with pool and colonial style bungalows (should be around 50-60$) to lots of smaller local restaurants and beach huts (try “Bocuse” at Lakka but avoid the rip-off at otherwise nice beach No2). If you are into surfing, join the British Army Officers at Burreh Beach.
The italian Restaurant and Guesthouse Francos (50$) in Sussex has the best Lobster, Pasta and Barracuda. They organise boat trips and rent scuba gear!
That’s the third point: Seafood is abundant, fresh and reasonable (count 20$ for 1kg Lobster).
In town, checkout Country Lodge at Hill Station (on the hill with great view over part of Freetown), Mamba Point (nice garden) or Alex’s (at the waterfront), where three course menu excl. spirits will set you back between 25-35$.
There are lots of guesthouses and Hotels, like Country Lodge, Cabendas, Mamba Point, but for that you should go to visitsierraleone.org, they know better as I only use them for short periods.
For this purpose, your best bet is the guesthouse directly opposite Paddys Nightclub. 10$ per hour or 100$ per night (the daily rate is overpriced, but for the shortcut, as they say here, the location is unbeatable.)
Which leads us to the essential spots for most of you fellow mongerers:
Paddys nightclub (and all the other ones) are jam-packed with chicks, mostly from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. They come in all shapes and sizes.
A shortcut will set you back 10-18$, a night 15-20$. As you can see, not much of a price difference. If you take them for the night, they speculate on GFE so you get a kind of discount.
But beware: Lock your valuables before you go out, and maybe lock the room once inside with her and hide the key so she wont be able to sneak out with your jeans, shoes, mobile etc. at 5.30 in the morning. This rule especially applies if you are drunk!
Please, don’t overpay! Bear in mind that the average salary is somewhere between 30 and 100 $ A MONTH!!! Your fellow local mongerers (yes, there are a lot of them!) will be grateful if you don’t inflate the market! The prices quoted are white man’s prices anyway. If she asks for much more, leave her. Experience shows she will be trouble! And no hooker is special enough to justify trouble!
Apart from Paddys, you have Buggys, Copacabana (Thursdays only) and Lagoonda. You will more or less see the same chicks if you make the tour for a week as they do the same.
If you want less professionals, try China House on Fridays with live band and Sierra Leone middle class, Jay Bees or Old School with a mix of Lebanese and well-heeled locals.
Sunday evenings is a must at Bintas Beach Bar, with a young and trendy crowd.
If you have a cool local to go with you, go into the east of Freetown (which is the poorer, rougher part of the city).
But in my opinion the best experiences will not be hunted in clubs. As with many other places in Africa, your best bets are the ones you see in restaurants, on the street, in a shop (hairdressers!) etc. A good place with an excellent view on the city and on some of the best chicks in town is the university Fourah Bay College, nestled in the hills above Freetown. And if you check your emails at the British Council, keep your eyes open as well.
So always have your mobile phone number ready (as an experienced traveller you obviously bought your local sim (comium is the cheapest) straight away) and you will set up more dates then the day has hours. Have a nice dinner, a drink at the beach etc. and in 99% of the cases you will end up in bed that evening (the one percent refers to women who go out on a date despite being on their period).
Generally, you will be safe in all public places, meaning where there are people. So avoid the beach after dark and generally walking around after 11pm. But I must say that Freetown, compared to other capitals in Africa, is a lovely, slow and peaceful place. People will go on your nerves with “white man, white man”, which is in 100% of the cases the start to some sort of begging, but once you start ignoring this, you will be fine. Been in the country for one and a half years now and have never been assaulted (apart form the crazy taxi drivers while driving , but they belong to Freetown like the fog to London).
You can take public cabs, but I wouldn’t board one alone during the night. Better you arrange with a cab driver on a daily/weekly basis (daily should be around 20$ if you hire for a week) or you rent a car from the travel agencies in town (expensive).
To fly you have the choice between British Airways and SNBrussels or the cheaper Astreus from Gatwick (800-900$ return). Alternatively, fly from Dakar for around 250-300$ return with Bellview. There are also connections to Nairobi and Accra.
After all the praise, let me not forget the downside: 98% percent of the women are circumcised, meaning they passed a so-called traditional ritual where an old woman cut of their clit with a razorblade. So even if you get nice GFE, it will never be the same as in, say, Mozambique, because she won’t be into it like black girls from southern Africa. And regardless of what other people claim, you don’t get an orgasm without the clit.

Considering your experience with non-pros, I don't think you have to worry at all. This country is all about sex, and money, of course. The only difference, as I said, is that unlike in Southern Africa, she will not just f**k with you because she wants a white d**k for a change, but because she expects something, wether pro or non-pro. I don't know Eastern Africa, so I can't compare it to there. But in countries like Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi, I had so many nights where I have been dragged because the girl wanted a white man "servicing" her. No money, no questions. In Sierra Leone, you have to show off a little bit, meaning nice dinner before, some gifts (underwear, cosmetics, the usual stuff) afterwards.
If you have time and a car, you will see enough just by driving around. And don't engage any middle-man, the so-called beach boys, in the action. They will always promise you the best looking woman in town, but you will end up with their ugly cousin where they get the commission. And there is no need, everybody speaks English, and everybody will stop and listen to you if you approach them. If she doesn't have a mobile, give her your number on a piece of paper and some cash so she can call you.
The prices for Guest Houses are around 30 Dollars a night. The best is to reserve a good hotel like Cape Sierra or Cabinda (both very close to your arrival point) for one night and then make a little tour with a local taxi the next day. See the link I was posting in the long report.
And I forgot: If you are in a real hurry, there are some streetwalkers on beach road.
The beach is marked in yellow, the area where you are likely going to spend your days and nights (most of the hotels, nightclubs) with the red arrow.

One thing I forgot: In many of the other forums you can read people asking wether the hotels are girl-friendly or not. I really don't know why. Never had any problems in Africa. But let me tell you one thing: In Sierra Leone, there is no such thing as a single room, just rooms (maybe with the exception of the one or two four-star hotels), and if you don't have company by the second night, either the receptionist or the security or the waiter or the driver ( I could go on) will ask you if there is any problem and if you need some assistance.
Thanks for those great reports Jaeger. Makes me very nostalgic, but it looks like now that the war is over things have not changed much at all. You list more beaches and hotels than I remember being available back in 1990-94. The beaches are fantastic. I learned that I could be a beach bum if I had to!
Mongers! The women in SL are trustworthy, charming, and fantastically good lays (just in case you didn't get this from the posts). Many westerners end up in love with the country (I was) and/or with one of the lovely, fairly well-educated middleclass women who are the main targets of white mongers. As for the clitorectomy issue, all I can say is they make you work a little harder for their pleasure, but if you succeed in giving a Salone girl an orgasm, she will return the favor many times over! It also might not be true that ALL women you will nail have been cut - it is fairly uncommon among the Krios in Freetown, esp. the Christians. And a little tongue work up front will help - the nerves are still there under the scar.
The other "warning" theme is theft. The people are definitely poor, and have perfected a hundred ways of relieving you of your valuables. I speak from experience. The situation might be a bit more serious now that many younger men have the experience of major violence - before the war there was little violent crime, just pilfering.
I hope I can make it back there some day soon.

Salone is definetly not a place for the African Beginner, as you wont find a well established tourism industry and infrastructure. But if you are streetwise, know how to bargain and like adventure, it is definetly a rich experience.
The hotels are good, the food excellent and people are very friendly.
If you want the jungle (I mean apart from the night jungle ;-), you can visit National Parks, a Shimpanzee reserve and ancient slave stations. All info on: www.visitsierraleone.org.
You need to hire a 4x4 for upcountry (at IPC Travel agency or via the hotels, count 100$ per day) and you better bring a hammock or sleeping bag and a moskito net.
They also arrange boat and fishing trips.
The months from June to september are rainy season, so don't go. With Congo, SL has the highest rainfall worldwide. That means everything gets flooded.
The big advantage in Sierra Leone is the relative low level of crime.
And the biggest?
Have a look for yourself.

Not that I care at all about him but the film for once is something different out of Hollywood. And I have seen it already on a black market copy, its not bad.
But you are right, lets get back to the subject:
Found her working in the customer service section (no pun intended) of one of the mobile phone companies. Asked her to help me find out about rates for international calls, chatted a bit, made a date for later in the week and that was it. Since then, she has appreciated a much more varied life.
I prefer girls with regular jobs, much better attitude and standing. There have been so many discussions on this board about (black) girls attitudes and I wonder how some people can seriously debate wether the fucked-up ***** they dragged last night could be a loyal partner. Don't mean to discredit anybody here, but my advice, if you want to have some good time, take a woman with a job who knows what it means to work 8 or 10 hours for her (little) money. Be aware though that almost all of them already have some kind of sugar daddy behind them as tution is costly. But contrary to the rest of this country, they are good time managers, so they will squeeze you in.

A special group of women to look out for are the Fullas (not sure about the spelling). They have some North African blood down the line so they look a bit different. Not that easy to catch though as their families are normally much more tradiitonal. But hey, we are at ISG, so obviously they were on my list.
Most of them are in buiseness and trade. You find these little kind of groceries all over Freetown that belong to them. Comparable to the Pakistani shop in London that never closes. If you need candles, condoms or a coke, they have it.
So there was this beauty and I needed to buy condoms. Fuck, I thought, how do you gonna talk to here if you just bought condoms? So I skipped the condoms, bought a bottled coke and ask her if she is a Fulla.

I was about to go when she said that I need to bring back the empty bottle otherwise she would have to charge me extra.

I use a Sanyo Xacti which I can really recommend. Better then any photocamera as you can shoot mpeg-movies/stills. So you don't have to bother with an autotimer . (http://www.sanyo-xacti.com/produkte/sanyo_product.asp?Xacti=CA6)
In additon a small tripod, about 10cm high.
Due to the bad light conditions the stills are not good quality but hey I cant be bothered to carry additional lights.
But please make sure you hide your shots well when leaving Tanzania and
when entering your country. Porn is illegal in almost all African countries and some day they will catch up as some custom officials in Asia already have.

This time I will take again both video and still. For the still I will force a flash and for the video I am taking two portable lighting source of 200W each. You will see the light in my room from your home country and if you will listen carefully you may hear the girls too :)

Thanks to people like us they will find out sooner or later. And they are always trying to find something. The whole issue is at the moment very much confined to SEA but the issue of sex travellers is already coming up in Kenya. Myself I have been searched many times, mostly they look either for smugglers of black market cash or diamonds/gold. I did not only leave the mag with them but also 100 $ (There were three involved, two searching me plus the boss, so it was around thirty per guy). I can wholeheartedly confirm what has been said here about Sierra Leone.
The place is peacefull, the beaches beautifull and the girls everywhere.
I just want to add four places that have not been mentioned in the previous reports:
Porsh Nightclub: In the east of Freetown, on the so-called highway to Bo on the left side when coming from Kissy. Very nice place, excellent lightning (UV and fluoro) and sound, and above all, packed with a moving young crowd. Mostly non-professionals that will be very happy to make new friends.
The owner is a nice rastaboy, just ask for him and he will give you a tour and a nice welcome.
Do not take a taxi from there in the night. Come with your own car or take a driver with you who waits for you!
Krio Wendys: Right in the centre of town, on the corner of Bathurst Street and Pademba Road, close to the famous cotton tree.
Open air bar with the sound system, the dancefloor and the tables on the sidewalk and right on the street. Nice warm-up place before heading to nightclubs. Park your car right there, get a cold beer, lean on your car and observe the scene. Mostly middle class friends and couples dancing and drinking away with some semi-professionals. You can find real gems here.
Club/bar in Lumley (does it have a name?). Driving up from Lumley roundabout to Malama take the first street left. After 20m on your left. Very local place, outside a bit rough but packed with girls. All far less professional then in the clubs in Aberdeen, meaning normally better GFE for your money.
Bendus/Sweet Mothers Guest House: On the extension of the beach road, behind Atlantik Restaurant. Cheap (12.000 Leones = 3$) per hour. But don't expect it to be spotless. Some friends have complained about being sucked out not only by the girl but countless mosquitos.

said that, muggings are really rare in sl, but nevertheless you have to be carefull.
if you board a taxi with some people already in it (not just one or two guys in addition to the driver) you'll be fine.
the best is to get a taxi driver with a cellnumber that you can call anytime anywhere. he will pick you up and you have no hassle.
you will probably not have an accident as the average speed in freetown is about 25km/h:
10 - 15 during the day because of traffic and 40 max. during the night because of potholes and the complete lack of light (freetown has about 5 or six hours of electricity per day - if you live in the right area).
there are police checks in the night (carefull, no streetlights plus black guys in dark blue uniforms with no batteries left in their torches means you see them very late!) but the guys are alright. they will tell you that they work for your security but that they didn't eat yet and appreciate any small tip.
judging from your name and posts you are italien. the restaurant/guesthouse francos in sussex (has been mentioned in previous posts) is run by an italien guy. he has been in the country for ages and is a good source of info.

Before all attention is drawn to Eastern Africa due to Efremofs return, let me entertain you with one of my regulars. She is a twentysomething mother with an office job in town. It is fairly safe, I would say. Probably the Foreign Affairs Department is a bit more critical then I am, but I have been here for quite a while now and never had any problems. Neither have I heard any horrible stories. Be streetwise, meaning no walking around after ten pm, do not venture alone into certain areas, do not take a taxi alone in the night, leave your Rolex at home, do not flash ten grand when paying your beer and you will be fine.
Generally, people are very friendly.
Quite a few Americans down here, mostly Born Agains on a mission.
If you want to come for a different mission, don't worry, it is legal (mongering is kind of a national pasttime here for everything that is male and has some money to spare.).
How do you find them? They find you! In any club/disco you will have more choice then you can handle. Take your time to pick, go by your intuition to find one that is nice and gives you a good GFE.
In the clubs you are mostly dealing with professionals, so negotiate the price before! Otherwise, use your day to arrange dates! Here, you have to get a completely new concept of dating or men-women relationships in your head:
First, you can approach every girl/woman unless she is clearly walking with her boyfriend/husband! (In which case you can probably still fuck her but the approach should be a bit more discreet.)
Be polite and charming ("nice dress", "lovely hairstyle" etc) and you will never ever get a brushing of western style. She will be flattened anyway, and will either agree to meet you later (have your phone number ready) or decline politely.
Best starting lines: You are new, a bit lost and you need directions, a guide, or just plain company for a dinner.
Try shop assistants, waitresses etc. If you don't want to approach on the street. More details on the forum.

Apart from the younger urban generation the only group that doesn't cut are the Krios, descendants of freed slaves settled by the British in the 19th century.
You can distinguish a Krio by his name, as they have all very British sounding familynames (Cole, Tucker etc).

A very cheap one that has been recommended on the board for short visits is Dr. Bendu's/Sweet Mother'S Guesthouse on the Beach Road, also convenient location. But I would not leave my valuables behind reception...
For better comfort try Possehs or Korea Guesthouse.
A Beck's will set you back about 2$ in a nightclub, a local brand 1$.
If you charter a taxi, it is about 5$ per hour or the same for any reasonable distance you will need to cover. If you live in the same neighborhood as the nightclubs a ride home should be 3$.
If you enter as a normal passenger (make sure the driver understands you dont want to charter!), a ride is about 20 cents for a shorter distance (<3km). They drive along fixed routes. You can also take minibusses (Poda Podas) which cover longer distances.
A local dish will set you back between 1 and 4 Dollars. 1 is for a plate of rice and sauce with a chicken foot if you are lucky, 4 is for steak, chips, salad. Local coke is 50 cents.
At the beach, a grilled Barracuda with rice and sauce is 5$.
Everybody speaks English.

Decent Guest houses are Diana's or Jay's, not too far from all the action which takes place in Aberdeen. I don't know the price but you can check www. visitsierraleone.org, they have a list with all the guesthouses with telephone numbers.
A very cheap one that has been recommended on the board for short visits is Dr. Bendu's/Sweet Mother'S Guesthouse on the Beach Road, also convenient location. But I would not leave my valuables behind reception...
For better comfort try Possehs or Korea Guesthouse.
A Beck's will set you back about 2$ in a nightclub, a local brand 1$.
If you charter a taxi, it is about 5$ per hour or the same for any reasonable distance you will need to cover. If you live in the same neighborhood as the nightclubs a ride home should be 3$.
If you enter as a normal passenger (make sure the driver understands you dont want to charter!), a ride is about 20 cents for a shorter distance (<3km). They drive along fixed routes. You can also take minibusses (Poda Podas) which cover longer distances.What about the usage of credit cards?

I have been to Freetown this year in March. This is my first report. So show some mercy.
I was staying at the Buntumani hotel (Chinese hotel, near abadin beach). The only good thing about the hotel was it was big. Broken toilets, leakage, bad service, average food. Coming to the main topic, I feel it is very easy to get laid in freetown, if you like the dark skin. In evening, the hotel lobby was full of prostitutes ($10-BJ, $40-FS) , so was the road down to the beach. You can easily get message and "other stuff" at beaches too. If you want some good stuff, try visiting clubs (office was very near, but it will be crowded only after 1:30 AM). I havnt tried it, but if you will spend time there, you should do just fine.

Ok guys. I just came back from 4 months in west africa. Salone, Ghana, and Togo.
Freetown is my favourite. In freetown you can do whatever you want whenever you want.
Conditions are bad, very bad. But people are friendly and speak english. As long as you know what you are doing youll be fine. Don't walk on the beach at night and take a moto or a taxi even if you are going short distances and it is dark.
Aces was open when I arrived, then it closed for a couple of weeks, and opened again. Apparently there was some problems with their lease of the building.
Anyway. Aberdeen still the place to go. Aces, office, and maby atlantico late night. There are also girls at the bars all along Labadi beach. Aces after midnight is awesome. I really liked it. Lots of beautiful women, with amazing bodies. Negotiate the price beforehand and use 2 condoms. I liked freetown the most of the three places I visited. But it was also the place with the worst conditions. I stayed on the east side of town during the week and spent my weekends in Aberdeen mostly. Will go back in the near future. Was there just before Christmas 2013 from the US on a quick biz trip; first trip there, though I'm experienced in West Africa (Ghana, Cote'd Ivorie, Senegal). All expenses were paid so I was happy to go. What was to be 4 days on the ground turned into lessthan 48 hours there as a result of US & Canada weather delays both ways.
Stayed at the Bintumani, which I understand is the former 5-star resort (by African standards) before the war, which is now under Chinese control, approx. $150 / day for a double. Rooms were acceptable, again by African standards, but the beds were hard, again as usual in African hotels that don't go out of their way for 'westerners. ' The Chinese did a half-assed, cheap makeover, but didn't bother to install new carpets or repaint the place. My companions' room was mildewed, and the replacement was no better. Good view from the waterfront side, though it overlooks the usual dilapidated housing.
There were always some girls hanging around the pool after dark if you need quick service. Usually, they holler at you if you are alone. As it happened, I was there during a big formal banquet sponsored by the local bar association, with the chief justice of the nation's supreme court as well as the president in attendance, all dressed in tuxes and formal gowns. I used to enjoy zipping up and down the strip on motorbikes but now everyone is shoehorned into just a few places. But it was still fun. Recognised a few faces and got updates on who got married, who died, who's a crackhead etc.
Paddy's has opened up as Quincy's. People tend to go there last / late.

Thursday night, Reggae night at Quincy's. Arrive at around 11 pm. The place is huge you feel almost like on a football field. Some local guys playing pool otherwise nothing going on. At around 1 pm if I remember well the place starts to fill up but not much. There are even a few pretty girls around. One hooker approaches me in a pretty aggressive way. Total turn-off. It's getting late am fed up with the whole week and what the heck, I don't even like to listen to Reggae. I make it a a day and head back to the hotel.
Other places to hang out alone at night in Freetown during the week: Bliss restaurant, good Indian food, not a single soul around after 9 pm. Crown Xpress good for eating pizza. Lily's at Sierra Palms Hotel, good ice cream but the place is packed with Lebanese. Pearls along Lumley Beach is also a good choice to get some food during the evening hours but don't expect much to be going on there. Oh yes, and Papaya outside of Family Kingdom, but don't get too excited about it.
I am aware that there are a lot of positive reviews of Freetown. The place definitely seems to have a lot of potential particularly for day-time mongering. Apparently Warehouse gets crowded on weekends after midnight. But, alas, not for me this time. I wish everyone better luck.

It's still there but getting harder and harder to find. I have been working in Africa for about 15 years and its changed so much over that time. Sometimes you also find it in urban areas but you need a little more time and local friends.
I do travel quite a bit in rural areas. It can be very difficult but safety is never a concern for me. I am an experienced traveler but I must admit that the rural areas do get expensive because you need your own vehicle to travel. But once you have your vehicle, and a good driver who understands you and what you are looking for, you are all set. In general, as you can tell from my posts, I almost always go the non-pro route and take issues of consent, privilege, transparency, and respect very seriously.

Finding amateurs requires you to spend a little more time in Freetown, Makeni, Bo, Kenema, or rural areas. You can find a non-pro in Freetown and then take her to the beach. Hang out around Congo Cross or Goderich and make friends with locals and have them introduce you to women. The introduction route works best. At River #2, you can rent little cottages for 250 k SLL and enjoy the beach. For pros and semi-pros, hang out on the beach Saturday night and ask the staff where to look. I used the one next to the main gate of Family Kingdom / Papaya restaurant and the Ecobank ATM at the NP fuel station close to the Congo Cross roundabout. But the amount of money that you can withdraw is very limited. My advice would be to carry USD or EUR with you and exchange to local currency when you need it. Credit cards widely accepted? In some hotels (e. G. Family Kingdom) you can exchange currencies at the reception. You don't necessarily get the best rates, but at least you avoid being conned. I hope you have better luck than me in Freetown.

It is easy to get lucky in Sierra Leone on any day of the week, here are some indications for the night:
Any day of the week:

How much to pay: between 30,000 Leones to 50,000 Leones or more depending if it is more than 1 hour. They have an improvised bed inside an unfinished building or you can take them to your place.

They are semi pros, and some non pros, better than the girls you see around Wilkinson Road.

I did some thorough research on cheaper accommodation before I left and have compiled a list of 9 guesthouses / hotels to visit. I was planning to write a complete report this afternoon but guess what? It's national cleaning day every first Saturday morning of the month and nobody is allowed out until noon. If you do they'll give you a shovel to clean the street. Better take a girl with you the night before and have her stay otherwise you're going to be stuck with nothing to do. You can't even go out for breakfast. Everything is closed. Except for people cleaning there's no one outside.
For logistical reasons I decided to stay the first night at the Sierra International Hotel at 27 Rawdon Str. Single rooms 150 k-200 k SLL (fan / AC). Double rooms 200 k-250 k (fan / AC). This is a pretty sad hotel to my opinion. Black stain everywhere, grubby walls, plasterwork peeling off, bathrooms ok for African standards. No wifi.
Facing the Sierra you have the Hedjazi Hotel 32/34 Rawdon Str. Single room with AC for 200 K SLL. Doubles 180 k-220 k SSL. (fan / AC) Slightly larger rooms with sitting area and fridge. A bit better than the Sierra but only a bit.
On the other side of the block you have Hotel Freetowninn, 18 Howe Str. Single rooms 150 k SLL with airconditioning. Also better than the Sierra but only gradually.
From what I saw the concept of single / doubles is fluid. Sometimes a single simply means one large bed. And a double two beds. In all cases a single fitted two.
You can visit these 3 hotels in 10 minutes. They are all on the same block but be forewarned they are all moldy. Maybe some, especially the hardcore Africa guys, will be OK with them.
Nearly all budget accommodation is in the downtown area of Freetown. You should know that it's extremely noisy here. Cars honking all day long till 20:00-21:00. Safety seemed to be OK. I walked around the block at 23:00 PM. There where people around and stalls where open. The usual street hustlers where around though. I advise not to do business with these guys. They'll try to squeeze you any way possible.
Any intel on big booty women in SL? Think Cherokee the ass, Roxy Reynolds or beauty Dior.
Another pearl on Rawdon Str. Is Guest Place at nr. 42. Rooms from 75 k-100 k SLL. Add 15% sales tax. What can I say for 8 Euro one can't expect much.
I checked out Sweet Mother's Guesthouse. It was a disappointment. I really thought this place was going to be the ideal compromise between the higher and lower end accommodation. The hotel rooms are 37-50 USD (fan / AC) and the 'Bungalows' 50-75 USD (fan / AC). For 37 USD you don't get a particularly nice room without AC. And believe me it's usefull to have AC here. Don't expect the 'bungalows' to be anything grand. They are not. They are simply a room with a bed and a toilet with a shower. I would only recommend the 75 USD airconditioned rooms. They are nice and clean but for 75 USD you have more options. I also didn't like that they advertise their hotel rooms for 20 USD and 30 USD on Facebook while when I got there the minimum price for a room was 37 USD and for a bungalow 50 USD. Also don't think you are straight at the beach. You can't see the ocean. In front of the hotel is a concrete wall. You have to walk around 300 meters. And you are 7-8 km from central Freetown. Some of the bars here suggested are a couple of km's eastward from the city center. Then you would need to travel more than 10 km to go out. From a logistical point of view that wouldn't be ideal.
Maybe the best compromise I found until now is the YMCA at 37 Fort Street. This is a christian guesthouse and they offer an airconditioned spacious double with shower / toilet, airconditioning, fridge and T. V. For 350 k SLL. The place is what one could expect from a religiously inspired hotel. Boring but decent and clean and the good thing is they are sympathetic towards our hobby. I had the audacity to ask if I could bring sexworkers inside but I formulated it slightly different. The population went up about 10 x during the War when people fled there from the East and stayed on.
If the centre truly doesn't bother you, then go for it and stay in the East End. That would be cheap and you'd be a local celebrity.
Forget what it cost but I stayed at Charms Beach. It's not on the beach or even within sight of it but it's a ten minute walk to the strip on Aberdeen. Yes, Aberdeen is a bubble but risking your life on the back of a motorbike to go to and from there from the so-called centre each day isn't worth the money saved on hotels.
Personally, I found someone I liked and took her to the beaches down the coast. Or found someone there. Or just got out of Freetown completely.
Another pearl on Rawdon Str. Is Guest Place at nr. 42. Rooms from 75 k-100 k SLL. Add 15% sales tax. What can I say for 8 Euro one can't expect much.
I checked out Sweet Mother's Guesthouse. It was a disappointment. I really thought this place was going to be the ideal compromise between the higher and lower end accommodation. The hotel rooms are 37-50 USD (fan / AC) and the 'Bungalows' 50-75 USD (fan / AC). For 37 USD you don't get a particularly nice room without AC. And believe me it's usefull to have AC here. Don't expect the 'bungalows' to be anything grand. They are not. They are simply a room with a bed and a toilet with a shower. I would only recommend the 75 USD airconditioned rooms. They are nice and clean but for 75 USD you have more options. I also didn't like that they advertise their hotel rooms for 20 USD and 30 USD on Facebook while when I got there the minimum price for a room was 37 USD and for a bungalow 50 USD. Also don't think you are straight at the beach. You can't see the ocean. In front of the hotel is a concrete wall. You have to walk around 300 meters. And you are 7-8 km from central Freetown. Some of the bars here suggested are a couple of km's eastward from the city center. Then you would need to travel more than 10 km to go out. From a logistical point of view that wouldn't be ideal.
Maybe the best compromise I found until now is the YMCA at 37 Fort Street. This is a christian guesthouse and they offer an airconditioned spacious double with shower / toilet, airconditioning, fridge and T. V. For 350 k SLL. The place is what one could expect from a religiously inspired hotel. Boring but decent and clean and the good thing is they are sympathetic towards our hobby. I had the audacity to ask if I could bring sexworkers inside but I formulated it slightly different. You probably can score there but many where in groups and there was not much dancing going on. Afterwards I did visit The Liberia Bar but it wasn't that busy nor was the bar with terras opposite Kadjibs Hotel. It was Saturday night.
Sunday I went to Royal Empire, this is in Garrison str. In the downtown area. In the weekends there is a cover charge of 20 k. Many people playing with their smartphones and like the other places a bit lame. Many playing with their phones little dancing. I didn’t like the place but you can score there. They have ST rooms. All the places I saw are not what I would call cash and carry mongering places. Your going to have to make an effort.
After the Royal Empire I went to The Suckle Pub on Aberdeen Rd. According to Camilo Cms the best place in Freetown. There where 6 blokes inside and not one girl. Not a single one. I'm not that impressed with the nightlife I've seen here until now.

Bo is the second largest city of SL but it has the feel of a provincial city. No upscale restaurants, bakeries or ice cream parlours. There is a Lebanese canteen style restaurant called Rury's otherwise only African eateries. The city does have some nightlife.

A long afternoon spent skinny dipping in the Rokel river with a local friend.

I just got back from my 4th trip to Freetown and there's been a ludicrous attempt to sanitise the strip by bulldozing the shanty towns and putting up a strong of identikit bars along the beach that are basically empty. Someone wrote of triggering a fight outside Papaya with girls fighting over him. I saw one girl in the week I was there.
People only seem to go out Fridays. Toma is a very cool bar, Honeysuckle is an attempt at a pub but they're all deserted six nights a week. Warehouse too.
The other 99.9% of Freetown hasn't changed but I couldn't stay around there. I had hoped to stay 3 weeks but bailed after 8 days and 3 of them were hanging around for the Covid Test / result.

Taking a break from Madagascar due to its current rainy season. Decided to travel west Africa. I started in The Gambia, then on to Senegal. Reports for both countries are in their respective forums. Now for Sierra Leone, then on to Nigeria and Cameroon.
First of all, a common misconception is that Sierra Leone is a French or Spanish-speaking country beacause its name is a relic of former Portuguese and Spanish traders. Actually Sierra Leone is anglophone. English is the official language. And it's worth noting that most locals I met referred to their nation by its nickname, Salone.
The tourist visa is available on arrival in Freetown airport, the capital city. There is also an ATM and a currency-exchange kiosk in the airport (which gave me a better rate for my US Dollars than the official rate online).
The airport is separated from Freetown by a body of water, so there are private and public boats available to carry you across. I chose the public ferry. It's cheap and a great party. On board we had food, drinks, music, dancing, comedic performances, and a lot of camaraderie. The locals in Freetown were lovely people, friendly, helpful, and loved to have fun. I also met some beautiful young ladies on the ferry who I chatted with and collected phone numbers for connecting later. On a side note, public transport in Africa is excellent hunting ground.
After departing the ferry, I took a taxi into Freetown and arrived at Sweet Mother's Guesthouse, located near the southern end of Aberdeen which is a popular peninsula with a strip of beachfront bars, restaurants, hotels, and discos along Lumley Beach Road.
During my ride from the ferry to the guesthouse, I observed the densely (overly?) populated city of Freetown. People and traffic are everywhere. Motorcycle taxis are common. And after checking in to the guesthouse, I connected with a moto-driver who gave me a tour of the city, including the Aberdeen strip. My impressions were that Aberdeen had once been a well-developed, highly-trafficked beachfront destination for locals and tourists. But it has fallen into disrepair. A lot of wooden shacks and shanty construction remain. Nonetheless, the area's natural beauty shined, and it seemed to have great potential if the government decided to invest in the revitalization of Aberdeen as a business / tourist district.
Among the places he showed me were Fourah Bay College, which was full of beautiful ladies. We visited the campus several times in the following weeks, and I always collected a handful of numbers. We also explored downtown, but there were just so many people it was hard to connect. Most of our hunting was in and around Aberdeen, and usually in the late-afternoon, evening, and night.
By the way, Tinder is also popular and effective if online is your preference.
Some of the places in Aberdeen I recommend are: Kingston Bar, Papa Cleff, and The Warehouse. There are many other (nameless) venues within walking distance to these.
On a positive note, Freetown has a lot of ladies who are interested and available. They are incredibly sweet, feminine, and cooperative. The typical appearance is medium height, slim, and dark-skin. Wigs and weaves (fake hair) are common. I also saw some skin bleaching, although not as much as in Ghana.
As for prices, it's important to first reiterate that Sierra Leone changed its currency in 2022. Previously the notes were one thousand, two thousand, five thousand, and ten thousand leones. They have removed the "thousand" from all notes. As a result, the currency is now one, two, five, ten, and (a new note) twenty leones.
Cash gifts I offered to ladies were similar to other African countries: short-term 200 leones. Long-term 300 leones. I also paid for all transportation, food, drinks, and entertainment. I received no complaints.
On the subject of money, Sierra Leone is a cash-based society (like many African countries). Most hotels, restaurants, clubs, and bars do not accept credit or debit cards, and there is no mobile money network like M-PESA in Kenya. In other words, you must carry cash everywhere and every day. The problem specifically with Sierra Leone is that the bills are of such low value that it's necessary to carry pockets full of money just to pay daily expenses. For example, 20 leones (the largest bill in circulation) is only equal to about $1. Yes, one dollar. Well, my hotel for the week was $300. Imagine having to go to the ATM machine, withdraw 300 one-dollar bills. BUT the ATM will only dispense 20 or 40 bills per transaction, depending on the bank. So it's necessary to make upwards of 15 consecutive withdrawals just to get the cash necessary to pay the hotel. This is before withdrawing cash to pay for food, drinks, entertainment, and ladies.
Sierra Leone is the first country where I thought to myself that the currency is worth less than the paper it's printed on. This can be good and bad. While a worthless currency is good in that products and services are cheap, especially if you discover and live within the local economy, it's bad in that you have to deal with dozens of regular ATM withdrawals and carrying large amounts of cash on you every day. Moreover, the locals know you are carrying it, and they know that you are a foreigner. Fortunately, during my time in Freetown, I had no issues with crime or personal safety.
Food in Freetown was not for me. Typical meals were often just rice with a SUPER spicy sauce on top. Way too much hot pepper for me. I usually couldn't taste the food through the spice.
Also, I observed a lack of a beach culture. In fact, the ocean at the southern point of Aberdeen is literally a floating trash dump. During my first days at Sweet Mother's Guesthouse, I enjoyed walking to the beach where several local women grilled and sold fish for lunch. But I never saw anyone swimming in the ocean. On the third day, I decided to carry my beach shorts and to take a swim. Big mistake. I barely set a foot into the water before a barrage of plastic bottles, bags, and other garbage surrounded me. I could not take a step without a sea of floating trash colliding with me. At that moment, I understood why nobody swam in the ocean. I had never experienced anything like that before or since. It's truly disappointing (from a local business perspective) because the Aberdeen peninsula and Freetown as a city are amazingly beautiful naturally, and they should be cleaned-up if for no other reason than as attractions for tourists who want to visit, swim, and spend money.
From Freetown, my plan was to fly directly to Lagos, Nigeria. So I needed to obtain a tourist visa for Nigeria. While in Freetown, I visited the Nigerian High Commission (embassy) in order to secure my visa. That whole experience was an expensive, illogical, frustrating pain-in-the-ass. In fact, I ended up visiting the High Commission six times, paid a total of $360, submitted current bank statements to demonstrate my financial solvency, and even sat face-to-face for a required interview with the ambassador himself. All of this was simply to visit Nigeria. Little did I know that the horrible process of obtaining a tourist visa was a harbinger of things to come during my time in Nigeria. All information is there. Good to know that there's new Leones. Not helpful if the biggest now is still a dollar. Ridiculous. So you still have to run around with loads of USD. Be happy that they actually gave you a Nigerian Visa. Normally they refer you back to your home country. Ridiculous. The worst Visa to get are the one for Nigeria and DRC. The problem when Sweet Salone is manifold. First they had the Civil war. Then Ebola. Then COVID. That killed society. They try to bring tourism back. The VOA for 80 $ was a first positive step. Before the war there was a famous luxury hotel on beach number 2. All rich and famous choppered in from the airport. Tempos passados. But I still liked Salone girls. I had a number of them back in the Gambia.
