There were no messages about the nightlife in Kampala; that is a shame regarding the huge street action and the number of girls available in discos.

For discos, you should check the Ange Noir, located 10 minutes by taxi from the city center. The road is quiet safe in comparison with streets in Nairobi. Inside that place, you will find around 200 girls and only 50 guys. When i was there, there were only 5 other white people but I never felt as I was not welcomed. It was the opposite, plenty of smiles everywhere. That disco reminds me of the famous 'Marine Bar Disco in Pattaya Thailand' but without those western guys jumping on the loud music.

Next to the Ange Noir, is the Silk Club. There was a Benson&Hedges party and unfortunately there were too many teenagers. Girls dressed very sexy but they looked only 16, so I left that place but i guess on other nights, it should be better.

As for the girls, dont know what to say. There is girls from many tribes or many countries (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda). 15% of the girls are light skinned but those are pricier. I never paid more than 30EUR for a girl and girls never asked for more or never left in bad mood.

There is more action in Kenya, but a wider choice in Uganda and very important, u feel safe to walk at night in the center.

Students there were talking very openly about sex and except for anal (which i never tried), they don't have many taboos. All of them (11) offered BBBJ and sex for few hours and of course Extra Ball for the one who still has energy. The bad thing is that some of those students dont ask for condom as they think that a young white man is not likely to have HIV. So don't be foolish and do yourself the effort to take a condom out of your pocket.

I stayed at the Sheraton Hotel and I never got any problem bringing girls back to my room. Only on one occasion did the receptionist ask for an ID Card.

Guestfriendly hotels, cheap girls for many different taste, what more could I ask?

There is a nice place to stay in Kampala: Speke Hotel, just below Sheraton. It's save and clean. There is an attached bar (Rock Garden) to pick up girls. You can take some or one of them in your room at no surcharge. The selection depends on the day and is usualy around 5-7 (on a scale of 10). Big Boobs lover: that's the place for you.

The Pub in the Seraton has also a niche selection. Sometimes there is a surcharge to take them up.

The Imperial Hotel has also no surcharge if she dresses normal.

I stayed at the Speke a few months ago. Rates vary from around $70 to $90. Well worth paying the extra $20 though as you get a much larger room with air conditioning. The other room is less than half the size.

The bar at the Speke is great for girls. Plenty of tables away from the bar too to figure out what you want. They also have a separate entrance from the bar into the hotel, so no need to pass through reception.

Sheraton wanted ID and a surcharge of 25 USD (showing on the bill) to bring up the girl. Speke is perfect. The Delux rooms 101-110 or so are easily accessible from the side and very suitable. Price around 100 USD. No surcharge.

Imperial also has no surcharge but is not as nice as Speke.

Would also like to mention Al's Bar (any taxi would know). Many nice girls from Burundi and Rwanda.

I was recently in Kampala and had time to venture into the nightlife and boy oh boy it was fun.

Please find below the hottest places in town:

1. Al's bar in Kansanga: here were all breeds of the night girls only the majority were high on alcohol, i was told for dutch courage.

2. Angenoir Discotheque: the ground floor is overflowing on thursday, campus night, for university chicks. If you have a chick, get upstairs though you have to pay like US$ 2 extra.

3. Club Silk: This is close to Angenoir about 200 meters apart and the road between is filled with all kinds. A quickie costs US$ 2.5.

4. Sax Pub: Located on william street, open till 7.00a.m but here the grade is too low.

5. The Rock Gardens: Located within speke hotel premises, you incur no extra costs of transport. No worry of getting mugged either.

6. The Venue: Located on the top floor of the biggest shopping mall close to fairway hotel.

7. Club Seven: located within the gates of makerere university, has a health club, restaurant, internet cafe and bar.

I recommend The Venue, for here you can hook young executives and is a hangout for the high class and the beauties. If you want the sharp-breasted, hot-blooded undergraduates, Club seven is the place. Mind you, you only have to spend on food, drinks and condoms with your catches from these two places. The rest of the places, it is commercial.

I sampled the city for three years and i was not disappointed. Those with a fantasy about female ejaculation (I am one of them), just ask the women "amazzi oyiwa; sagala oyilo?" meaning "do you have the water; I don't want just oil". She will open a tap!

If you happen to be in Kampala, the best way to hook a nice-looking girl is to befriend a taxi operator or a motorcycle boy (they are called Bodaboda). Most of them speak english and will try hard to impress you for they get business bringing you the girls. They know the most beutiful ones. Though their taste won't be definitely yours, give them specifications and they will know who fits in the picture. Two out three samples will be perfect. Although anal sex sounds taboo to many, they enjoy a good lick (cunnilingus) but be ready to jump to avoid the explosion especially if she is from the western part of the country (They are too juicy).

Promise her a visa to your home country and she will give you a treat for all the time you are in town. Arrived in Kampala Tuesday evening and am feeling very happy having left Kenia. Sat outside Speke Hotel and met a nice one from the eastern part of the country, went to Al`s bar ,i did not really like the music there, but apart from that it is ok. Another girl looked at me there and wanted to talk to me, my girl steered me away to another corner and what then happened has never happened to me before: the other one started following us and eventually it ended up in a fight outside the club between them. That should give you an idea about the level of competion between the girls here.
Decided to stay with my first one and my god I did not regret it. Right now I have bruises under my kneecaps and my back hurts decided not to fuck for two days now. It was one of the best encounters I have ever had (I have been to 43 countries). I wonder if all the others are like that too or was I just lucky. Al's bar and Capital pub are their full-time spots. A street between Ange Noir and Club Silk discotheques is a flesh open market and so is the street from General Post Office, Sheraton Hotel, Speke and Grand Imperial Hotels.

Kampala is very safe but be careful and lock away valuables if you take one to your room. Getting a friendly taxi driver (cars with stripes and letter S and called special hire) will help you with your errands. Cost: 10,000-20,000 UG Shs. will take you to any part of the city. The yellow taxis are more safe but twice as expensive.

I always found that there's a fine line between the pros and the non-pros there, and sometimes the line becomes invisible. Girls at Al's routinely get into fights over men. Try the Half London restuarant/bar next to Al's on the nights the place has live music. It's crawling with women, and the scene is more relaxed than Al's Bar. I never liked Ange Noir because it's always too mobbed and I get a headache from the music after 10 minutes or so. However, there's an English sports pub about 2 kilometers down the road from there that's more relaxed and has tons of women as well. You might also want to check out the pub/restaurant at the Sheraton between 8 and 10 PM, as there are usually a lot of women there as well. Try sitting at one of the tables outside and let them come to you. I have also had some luck in the late afternoon on the terrace of the Grand Imperial Hotel down the street from the Speke. You may want to go there for coffee some day and check the place out. There's also a bar in the back of the ground floor of the Imperial which is not too bad on some nights.

Mostly, Ethiopians tend to stay in their own country unless they migrate to Europe or the US. Aside from Djibouti, which is next door to Ethiopia, I have never found many Ethiopians anywhere but Ethiopia and of course, Eritrea.

If you are not lucky with your search in Uganda, you'll find some in Nairobi. There is quite a sizeable population here, however I cannot tell you specifically where they hang out. Some are there however in the New Florida disco or may be more at Florida 2000 disco. Primarily Somalis, but you might want to search for you other choices.

The Speke hotel, just opposite The Sheraton, has been previously reviewed by some mongers. It's pocket and monger-friendly and boasts of The Rock gardens (bar/dance), full of pros and semi-pros. It is at the centre of the RLD.
If you are on budget and prefer a more quiet environment, try Athina club, Namirembe guest house or Red chilli hide away in which case you will need a taxi to go mongering.

You have made it clear in both the Kenya and Uganda forum that you have no interest in black girls due to fear of catching HIV, so why not start writing in the forums of the countries where you find girls that appeal to you? Noone is especially interested in reading reports that state the obvious, that there is a lot of AIDS in Africa. I suppose that every person that indulge in sex with african women knows that HIV is prevalent in Africa and have decided that it is still worth the risk.

Uganda is often cited by WHO as having one of the more effective AIDS education programs in all of Africa. It's one of the few countries in Africa in which the incidence of HIV has actually dropped over the years. This does not mean that it (or any other place in the world) is totally free from risk, but it does mean that the women are likely to be a bit smarter about STD transmission.

I think the best bet for lowering the risks still further, is to look for a student. They're easy enough to find, they're not, strictly speaking, "in the business" and they're more likely to be savvy about disease prevention. I would suggest going to the Makerere University campus on any given day, finding someone who appeals to you, and start chatting her up. The odds that you will be successful are reasonably good. The supply of women is endless, and the risks are smaller.

I just booked a ticket from NYC to Kampala. March 17- April 4.

I do not have much of a plan, but would be happy to hear suggestions (especially on travel). I am not interested in taking African busses....did that in Ghana and it was an aweful experience. Rental cars (cost?). Maybe just take a cab for $20 US? to Jinja. Just thinking out loud here but any recent experiences would be helpful.

I have a nice list from the board of places to go for meeting women so I hope to have good reports for you guys.

Lastly, I arrive in Entebbe rather late at night. Should I just try to stay there that night? If so, does anyone have a name and general location of a hotel in the $50 or less range.

Do not stay in Entebbe. There will be plenty of cars willing to take you to Kampala for $10-$15 and it's worth the hour pain in the ass ride. There is nothing to see or do in Entebbe, and you're going to have to take the ride the next day anyway, so get it over with. It's not that awful and the road has been improved in the last 3 or 4 years. there is a large hotel on Lake Victoria, about 5 kms from the airport. I forget the name, but it's probably something like the Victoria Hotel. Any taxi driver will know it, and it's about the only place in town you would stay.

My advice would be to rent a car. Kampala is an easy city in which to find your way, and I'm sure you can rent a car for $20 or less per day. I don't know what country you're from, but remember they drive on the left. I had no problem adjusting to this and I doubt anyone else will either. If you choose not to do this, taxis are plentiful. When you arrive, unless it's after 2 AM or so, try to Rock Garden at the Speke Hotel. I doubt you'll be disappointed and if you're staying at the Speke, the Grand Imperial or the Sheraton, you won't even need a taxi to get there.

I arrive (allegedly) at 9:15 p.m.....I am just a little worried that after customs, delayed flight, you name it I won't be catching a taxi until 11 or 12 at night and it might not be the best idea to go for Kampala that night. I will try. But, in a worst case, isn't Lake Victoria worth seeing...maybe not.

I hope to check in during the trip and pack a lot of sightseeing and socializing into my two weeks.

I am from NYC and I am flying Emirates Airlines through UAE to Kamapala...miserably long flight, but I hope it will be worth it.

The attached pics are a nice girl I found (OK, we all know they find us...we don't find them!) at the Rock Garden Cafe in Kampala in May.

The Rock Garden is a standard African Pick Up Bar and the ladies are there everynight. It's great fun to eat at the restaurant there (food's good) and watch the women parade back and forth trying to get your eye. They won't approach you at the table in the restaurant though, knowing this will get them booted. As soon as you leave the restaurant and head to the bar, you're fair game, and unless you're one of their "undesirables" you should have three or four offers within the first five minutes.

As far as the "Undesirables". and here, I'll just quote one of the ladies whom I engaged in conversation. One of the girls (who was a bit too pushy for my taste) was talking to me when another guy sidles up to the bar on her other side. I ask her why she doesn't leave me and go talk to him, since I'm not buying her beer. Well, she turns to him, says a few words and then is back to me. rock gardens (the place comes to life just after 6 p.m. and moves up to speed after dark) are as good as their reputation, although i would argue that many of the girls are a little "too smart" for their semi-pro status. by this i mean, in other developing countries you find either professionals who know it all and do it all, but who also turn tricks, or occasional vendors who provide reliable gfes. many of the girls at rock try to have it both ways.

i also have to disagree with an earlier poster who said that the girls will not try to make a pass after you in the restaurant itself (just outside the bar area) for fear of the management. this is blatantly untrue. on the contrary there is a small group of woman who hang out in the restaurant itself during the evening and who will, given half an ounce of inducement, sit down at your table. however, these seem to be the most hard-boiled pros of them all and i tried to avoid them.

all in all i enjoyed three short-timers in speke hotel (i don't like all-nighters when i'm in strange lands...) and thoroughly enjoyed it. i also enjoyed the professional and discrete service of speke's staff, which in a top-market hotel could be taken for granted, but which in a, let's face it, small medium-range establishment must be commended.

let's face it, small medium-range establishment must be commended.I usually go to the Rock Garden as a last resort. Much more fun of the less "hard cash upfront" variety I found at Club Silk and to some extent, Ange Noir.

Of course I had the benefit of a Ugandan buddy who helped me "Pull". All the clubs had hot women, but at the end I felt Club Silk had what I was looking for in terms of attitude.

Thanks for the report and photo. I smiled when I read your comment about Gini - as I get older, I tend to avoid the girls who drink too much. They end up being more trouble than it's worth. Yes, you can't tell ahead of time. What I meant was that if a guy does get stuck with a heavy drinker, don't be afraid to walk away from her rather than bring her to your hotel room and wait for her to sober up - more trouble than it's worth.

I have a late report for Uganda. The delay as you are all aware is due to the old WSG was off line and I had quit filing any reports as such.

In September 2004, I was in Uganda for six weeks and did take in mongering though with restrictions as I was visiting family and also had a temp girlfriend.

The juicy details about women follow:

Speke Hotel: On any given night, there were lots of girls to pick from. You can watch sports on TV, drink beers for a buck and half and wait for the pickings. Most girls seemed relaxed but there were a few aggressive ones. A good mix of girls from all over Uganda with some from near by Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. I thought Rwandese girls were very beautiful and sexy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. On some nights, there was DJ dancing and the place got parked. Sheraton: I did not venture up there thinking the pricing structure at the Sheraton is more geared to those guys with an expense account i.e. burning some one else's money.

Club Five: On the gates of Makere University was more relaxed on the nights I went and I saw many couple types but I am sure with a little attempt, a monger will score the co-eds easily.

Angenoir: The best Disco joint in town that can compare with any disco any where at least inside the club i.e. laser lights and the works. I was with a date in the VIP seating and so many women in that place.

Club Silk: On the same block just below Angenoir but I did not go inside.

Sax Pub: On William street didn't catch my drift so I passed.

The Venue: In Uganda's only true enclosed Mall seemed like an interesting place but I was with family and friends. A nice place to hang out with a date or friends.

Out of town: Why anyone would want to go to the likes of Al's Bar, Half London in Kasanga, I have no idea? I didn't venture to go there! I think the danger to run into serious or bad situations in Kasanga Bars would be higher.

Street Girls: What? Even Kampala now boasts lots of street girls but with $10 for a nice gal some even are 8 why even bother with the street?

Food: Shangai and Fang Fang both serve nice Chinese menus. One has to eat and get that energy you know.

Hotel: Athina Club House in Kololo gives good value and quiet. You need a taxi but the price is cheap. I don't think you ever pay more than $3-$5 any where around town. There is an Irish Pub near the Athina I think OLeary's. Boy apart from the big tropical Palm trees, once inside with the many British and Irish, you think you are in Dublin not Kampala. A nice place to chill out.

Short Time: If you are daring you can go to some cheap lodges around Nakasero market for under $20 bucks and get your fix with your trick. The hotels in Kampala are expensive with hardly any $50 places of good value!

The few girls I tried did a good job in bed and some surprised me with their BJ skills. I was not offered any anal and I did not ask but I'm sure with the right girl, price and combination of raport anything is possible.

I found Kampala to be very cheap city besides the expensive cost of hotel. The food, drinks, girls and Kamonye is very cheap.

It was a Wednesday night at Speke's.

Many are complainning about the prices of hotels in Kampala.

I stayed in hotel Fiancee in Channel street close to the old taxistand. The price for a clean single selfcontained room is 18.000 Ush (double 22.000). The people are friendly and no one bothers about bringing someone in your room for the night, actualy they like it if you bring a local girlfriend. Also the security is OK, one morning a girl left and then came back with the guard to check is I was OK (so I gave him a beer). Don't be afraid of the area, I walked there late at night (also can take a poda-poda or taxi to get there).

Also very easy to pick up girls in restaurants and on the street (I had only students, give them something to eat and drink and it is OK).

I have continued to research this phenomena of what is "kakyabali".

Unfortunately - research has been purely academic so far - with no practical
r&d - yet.

Some of the old haunts have gone quiet though. Al's bar for one was as dead as a dodo. Some girls around but they just sat there glaring into space. My first report. Here’s an overview on the nightlife scene of the country where I am living since many years.

Kampala.

Rock Garden aka Rock Bar: situated near Speke Hotel in city centre. Quite busy on weekends. Mainly pros. Among the best selection of girls. Thanks everybody for all your kind words of my first report. Big honour to be mentioned in the “Reports of Distinction”. Didn’t expect it.

So here we go with other reports from the Pearl of Africa.

Serious punters should be aware that the new academic year at Kampala university is on. This means tons of new “freshers” in town hanging out, around and near the campus of Makerere. Funny but it seems to be a local tradition for wealthy high class Ugandans to send scouts to overview the new arrivals! Funny country uh? By the way these days it’s worth a visit to the main campus to see what’s going on. Freshers are always looking for a sponsor.

Last time I gave a brief review of clubs and discos. There are some other worth mention like Rhino at Sheraton, Steak Out, Fusion 9 and Faze 2. These clubs are mainly attended by students and ladies of the “rich Kampala”. Not many pros, apart Rhino, but it could be interesting on weekends to find trendy chicks dancing and having fun.

Also it’s good to pay a visit at The Venue at Garden City and Garden City itself in the late afternoon evening hours. Sometimes I spotted some of the less known ladies active in the business in the usual night clubs and discos.

Does anyone have any recent recs for cheap guest houses or lodges near downtown?There are many guest houses almost everywhere in town, most of them convenient located near the hot spots of Kampala nightlife. Mainly used by locals in need for some privacy. Avoid the cheapest ones near taxi park, too much noise in the morning time and not good quality. Maybe the only option there is the 888. Better to head to the ones located in Kansanga – Kabalagala - Kibuli area or Rubaga. Unfortunately there are not many located exactly downtown.

Usual prices for decent clean self contained rooms with TV are in the range of 30.000 – 50.000. Cheapest ones are to avoid in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately that was my conclusion too, I was just hoping that someone had unearthed a gem on Nakasero that was a bit less costly but still decent. There used to be some decent places down by Owino--Mukwano Guest House, Nakivubo Guest House, etc. , but it's been a long time since I stayed in them, so they're probably at least 30, 000 now. My target is a spot for a daytime rendezvous where I don't use up all of my lunch hour getting there from downtown. Kampala's traffic is so bad these days, I hate getting caught in it. I know a pro from the Speke who has her own place but it takes almost 30-40 minutes to drive there from downtown.

There is a new nightclub in Ntinda, Club Pa Lui, which might be a good venue for picking up non-pros. They have a "campus girls" night on Wednesdays. The place has good parking and is similar in decor to Uganda's other discos but a lot less crowded. Entry is about 10,000 Ushs ($6).

The Samalian Hotel offers big rooms for 38,000 Ushs near the center of town. It's not great but the sheets and the bathrooms were clean, and there was hot water in the showers. It's located right below the Hotel Equatoria, and there is secure parking. A pretty ugly place, but I think it's one of the better values in the area. There are a number of similar places on the same street.

There is also a Mandarin Spa in the new Quality Supermarket mall in Ntinda. Massages cost 20,000. No extras were forthcoming when I was there but everyone was very friendly, so it may depend on the masseuse. The facilities are very nice, much nicer than at the one in Bugolobi, IMHO.

In the interests of adding to Thunder Road's very excellent and comprehensive reports here, I can make a few additions to this section. For whatever reason, Kampala seems to lack the massage parlor scene that Nairobi has (at least judging from what I've read on the Nairobi board). Even places that look like they have a lot of potential don't seem to fulfill that potential.

Chinese Massage Parlor below Crested Towers: This place is a prime example of the previous comment. With young, skimpily dressed masseuses, a dingy but private setting, and a general unprofessional look, you'd think this would be the prime setup for massage with sex. I was initially paired with a pouty masseuse in high heels and a see-through top, only for her to beg out at the last minute because "her customer had arrived". Her replacement gave a great massage, but not with any extras (although I didn't go out of my way to ask, just something in her manner seemed off-putting). I don't know what to make of the place, although I suspect that extras are on offer, but I actually got one of the better massages I've had in a while. Despite their claim to offer "Chinese massage, " when I asked about this option, they said the masseuse had gone to China. The damage is 20, 000 (for a 1. 5 hour massage), and the facilities are generally pretty lousy except the showers are OK.

Corner View (or something like that) Hotel, Ntinda (just past the trading center on the road to Kiwatule): This is a grungy hotel/sauna/steam bath/massage/Big Brother Africa viewing joint. Facilities are not great. The masseuse was kind of cute, despite carrying a few extra pounds, but didn't seem to be interested in giving extras. Although it was late and she was tired, so another visit might yield better results. The rooms are only secluded by a curtain, though, so privacy may be an issue. The damage is 13, 000 for a massage.

Machame Health Club, Naguru: This Tanzanian place on Naguru just opened. It is not particularly notable. They offer massage for 20, 000 and a HJ was offered, for which I tipped 10, 000 (no money was discussed up front, so you can probably pay less).

Golden Lily, Kamwokya: I haven't visited myself, but it's supposed to have very nice decor and setting. A massage costs 40, 000. No idea if extras are offered.

Mosa Courts Health Club, near the Sheraton. Massage costs 25, 000, Aromatherapy 30, 000. I didn't try it because it didn't look particularly appealing. The room did not have privacy and the masseuse looked a bit on the lazy side.

I may just be having bad luck, because I know that there should be a ton of massage places that do offer full sex. Anyone is free to correct me, but it certainly seems like a scene that takes a lot more hunting than Nairobi, where the full sex places are fairly obvious. I don't know why that should be, but that seems to be the way it is.

Uganda sets up red-light district

Prostitution is illegal in Uganda

Special zones to control the activities of commercial sex workers are being set up in Uganda's capital ahead of the Commonwealth leaders' meeting.

Kampala's mayor told a Ugandan paper it was being done to avoid embarrassing dignitaries attending the international conference which starts next weekend.

Prostitution is illegal in Uganda, but sex workers operate freely in Kampala, especially in the city centre.

Prostitutes have confirmed they have been asked to move to suburb areas.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) is being held from 18 November to 25 November in Kampala.

Dignitaries will include the head of The Commonwealth, UK Queen Elizabeth II, and her son Prince Charles.

Commenting on Mayor Ntege Sebaggala's plan, Local Authorities Minister Kahinda Otafiire said the relocation will be temporary.

"Much as they are doing their business illegally, the government will provide them with other operational areas during Chogm," he told Uganda's Monitor newspaper.
A prostitute in the Katwe area of the city confirmed that she and her co-workers have been told to leave the city centre streets.

"It [Chogm] has disorganised us so much because... we are being told to go other places and to bars. And some of us don't like bars, so that's the only problem we have there," she told the BBC.

The BBC's Sarah Grainger in Kampala says commercial sex workers, who usually pick up business outside the Speke Hotel and in the roads around the Crested Crane building in the centre of the city, are being asked to move to other areas like the lively suburbs of Kabalagala and Ntinda.

According to residents in central Kampala, the number of sex workers usually seen along the main city streets has drastically reduced this week.

Kampala's population is expected to swell temporarily as 53 heads of state and around 5,000 delegates descend on the city for the summit.

Depending on where you want to stay, the renovated Sheraton is a good option; otherwise, unless you want to go to the very expensive places, the best places are the newer ones a bit outside the city center. There are two new ones on Kololo, the Protea and the Metropole, and also the Imperial Royale, which is central. IMHO, the Grand Imperial is pretty lousy. Downtown is best for easy access to some common mongering spots like Rock Garden; it is fairly safe now in downtown at night but for moving around at night it's best to take a taxi to most places.

The Copper Bar at the Grand Imperial was still closed at the last visit. From Grand Imperial, however, you can easily walk to Rock Garden, which is one of the prime spots.

Not really recommended, but if you find another masseuse there, you might have better luck, as there are apparently three women working there.

Tricky situation. If the baby is 10 months old *now* then she was born in February 2007, and concieved around May 2006. This doesn't match with your stated timetable.

In terms of nationality I presume you weren't married at the time and the baby, if indeed it is your biologicially, has the nationality of the mother (I presume Ugandan), rather than than the father. Depending on the laws in your country the child may or may not have a claim to your nationality, however most Western countries have tightned up the laws on this and the chances are not. Foreign embassies will also often insist on a DNA test to identify any claims.

However, it is also true that women will claim the baby as belonging to various people in order to secure payment. I know one woman who had twins, a boy and girl by her Ugandan boyfriend. The boy died at birth and she claimed the boy was born white, the girl black. A dutchman paid a stipend of 300,000 UGShs every month in the belief that the girl was his (although she looked African rather than mixed race).

The answer is take care. There are very many mixed race children in the ghettoes in Kampala.

DNA tests are possible if you take swabs from the child and yourself and process through a company in Europe. It will cost.

I am answering your question as I was in a very similar position and had to make some difficult choices. In short I took the kid home after a DNA test, because the mother was totally incapable of looking after the kid. The mother remains in Uganda. I am not suggesting that you have to make this choice.

March in Kampala is usually at the beginning of a rainy season. We have had a lot of rain during January, however, which is unusual, so it is unseasonally cool and pleasant right now. I suspect it will be decent, and Kampala never gets as hot as the Kenya coast anyhow. But it can be very humid.

The guesthouse I mentioned below (Hotel City Square) is very basic--no safe, no frills, and make sure you get one of their better rooms, as they vary significantly in quality. A bit of friendliness at the reception desk and being willing to go back and change rooms should do the trick. Some have TVs, some do not. It is not great but there is very little decent accommodation in Kampala in the 20-30 USD range. If you are willing to go to the outskirts of town there are decent places in Kansanga (I think there are two called the Hotel Olympia and the Marble Arch Hotel) or Ntinda (the Nob View Hotel) but these are not much better and if you are traveling back and forth to the center of town you will spend a lot of money on transport, and also have to deal with traffic.

Downtown the Tourist Hotel is better than the above-listed places but also costs a bit more money, I think it's closer to $40.

There are places in the $15 range but you'll have to search for those--another contributor to this board named something called the 888, but I haven't visited that one so you'll have to search for it yourselves.

There is a useful publication called "The Eye" which also can be accessed on-line, which lists some accommodation.

After two decades, Sean Reid of Surrey, British Columbia, discovered that he had a son. Fred Turley of Des Plaines, Ill., learned he didn’t have a daughter. And Wendy Lieb of Lewis Center, Ohio, made certain she wasn’t going to be a grandmother quite yet.

In all three situations, crucial genetic information altered the lives of the people involved. And in each case, it came not from a doctor or other medical source, but from a $29.99 kit on a drugstore shelf.

Reid, Turley and Lieb are among more than 800 customers who responded to the first wave of marketing for do-it-yourself DNA paternity tests sold as Identigene by Sorenson Genomics of Salt Lake City.

Sales in three western states — Washington, Oregon and California — were so brisk last fall that Rite Aid Corp. expanded the product this week to some 4,300 stores in 30 states across the country.

“The running joke is that we’re the Maury Povich family,” said Reid, 37, who confirmed years of speculation about a former girlfriend’s son with a kit purchased at a Bellingham, Wash., store. “But why not do it privately? We did this as discreetly, as efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible.”

For users like Reid, the tests provide easier answers to one of life’s crucial questions — Who’s your daddy? — said Douglas Fogg, chief operating officer of Identigene.

“Everyone is purchasing the tests because they’re curious,” said Fogg, who expects to sell at least 52,000 tests this year. “They’re looking to establish questions about their own child or their own paternity.”

But for genetics experts, drugstore marketing of DNA testing raises questions of accuracy and ethics.

“From our perspective, direct-to-consumer genetic tests raise all the same issues for lax government oversight, potentially misleading or false advertising and the potential for making profound medical decisions on the basis of poorly interpreted or understood results,” said Rick Borchelt, a spokesman for the Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University.

At the very least, the kits have the potential to complicate the lives of the people who use them, legal experts cautioned.

“We all need to take a step back and realize that this is different than many tests that you take,” said R. Alta Charo, a professor of law and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. “This is a life-changing moment.”

DNA tests join other diagnostic tools

The paternity kits have taken their place on store shelves next to other diagnostic tests that don’t rely on DNA, including those for pregnancy, HIV and blood sugar, said Michael S. Watson, executive director of the American College of Medical Genetics.
Unlike genetic tests for health conditions, tests that use DNA to determine paternity are fairly simple to provide and fairly easy to interpret, said Watson. They're subject to limited oversight, however, with no review required by the Food and Drug Administration and no certification required under the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, or CLIA.

The Identigene kit includes swabs for collecting cell samples from the inside of the cheeks of the child and the alleged father. Collection of the mother’s cells is optional, but strongly recommended to strengthen the results. The swabs are packaged and mailed to the Sorenson laboratory in Salt Lake City where they’re analyzed.
The Sorenson lab is accredited by the AABB, the agency formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks.

Results are reported online, by phone or by mail in three to five business days. They come back as a probability figure that verifies paternity with 98 percent to 99 percent accuracy, Watson said.

Total cost is about $150, including the price of the kit and a $119 laboratory processing fee. For another $200, users can purchase validated tests that meet legal requirements for determining paternity, Fogg said.

Court use questionable

But Susan Crockin, a lawyer who specializes in reproductive technology, said consumers shouldn’t count on the tests standing up in court.

“The jury’s still very much out on these tests in terms of reliability and establishing a chain of custody,” said Crockin, a consultant for the Johns Hopkins public policy center.

Most of the users who have been buying the kits — which have gone on sale for as low as $17.99 — don’t plan to use the results to resolve legal issues, Fogg acknowledged. Instead, most are looking to answer social questions. And that's where the complexity comes in.

Because the cell samples are taken in private, there’s the potential for fraud and deception, noted Charo, the ethics expert.

“I can imagine rather peculiar circumstances in which somebody has a swab taken without their knowledge,” she said. “It raises questions about informed consent.”
Even when people do consent, the results can be unsettling. Watson estimates that between 5 percent and 10 percent of genetic tests he's conducted show a child is not related to the presumed father.

“It could break up families,” Watson said. “Some will be broken because that was the goal. Others will be broken up and that wasn't the goal.”

But people who’ve used the at-home tests swear by the ease, the accuracy — and the results.

After 20 years, a mystery solved

For Reid, the paternity test opened the door to a new extended family. He’d always wondered whether the baby born to a former girlfriend was his, even though she insisted the child was fathered by another man. When the girlfriend contacted Reid on Facebook last summer, the pictures she sent of her oldest son raised the question anew.

“My wife, said ‘Oh my, that’s you,’” said Reid, a nurse.

Internet research pointed Reid to the Identigene test, which was cheaper and more convenient than other options. With cooperation from his former girlfriend and her son, they all took the tests, with results that altered everyone’s lives.

“Our newest son has a family he never knew he had including grandparents, aunts, and three younger brothers who are all very excited to meet him,” Reid said.
For Fred Turley, 55, the DNA test confirmed what his companion had told him: the 4-year-old girl he helped care for was not his. The news was disappointing, but clear, he said.

“The bottom line is, I don’t have to live with the uncertainty about her being my daughter and wind up in a fight just to find out,” Turley said. “This won’t change how I feel about the girl. It will just remove what had become a major concern.”
For Wendy Lieb, 41, the DNA test restored her 20-year-old son’s future. He’d already quit college, taken a job and assumed the responsibilities of pending parenthood after a girl he had.

‘He just didn't look like my son at all.’

Lieb said she was proud of her son’s response, but perplexed after the baby, a boy, was born.

“He just didn’t look like my son at all,” Lieb said. “And we have fairly strong genes.”
A trip to the drugstore and 10 days later, the answer was clear: her son was not the father.

“I thought it would have required thousands of dollars and a trip to the doctor,” she said.

Lieb is relieved for her own child, of course, but also for everyone involved. As difficult as the situation has been, she said, it will be easier for them to adjust now, rather than years later. The test may raise ethical questions, she said, but it also provides the peace of mind that comes with answers.

“I think it’s a lot more ethical for you to find out the truth,” she said.

Early December 2007:

Arrived in Entebbe late evening, the flight in was delayed, straight through immigration as paying for the visa on arrival is extremely easy. USD50 if I remember correctly.

From Western Europe, and with my limited experience, the cheapest is Brussels Airlines, when you avoid, of course, summer time, but even now it's cheap: around 700€ for a round trip. I don't know why but the ticket is cheaper again when you buy it in Kampala or Entebbe than in Europe? You can also try the web site of Emirates.

In the interests of adding to Thunder Road's very excellent and comprehensive reports here, I can make a few additions to this section. For whatever reason, Kampala seems to lack the massage parlor scene that Nairobi has (at least judging from what I've read on the Nairobi board). Even places that look like they have a lot of potential don't seem to fulfill that potential.

Chinese Massage Parlor below Crested Towers: This place is a prime example of the previous comment. With young, skimpily dressed masseuses, a dingy but private setting, and a general unprofessional look, you'd think this would be the prime setup for massage with sex. I was initially paired with a pouty masseuse in high heels and a see-through top, only for her to beg out at the last minute because "her customer had arrived". Her replacement gave a great massage, but not with any extras (although I didn't go out of my way to ask, just something in her manner seemed off-putting). I don't know what to make of the place, although I suspect that extras are on offer, but I actually got one of the better massages I've had in a while. Despite their claim to offer "Chinese massage, " when I asked about this option, they said the masseuse had gone to China. The damage is 20, 000 (for a 1. 5 hour massage), and the facilities are generally pretty lousy except the showers are OK.

Corner View (or something like that) Hotel, Ntinda (just past the trading center on the road to Kiwatule): This is a grungy hotel/sauna/steam bath/massage/Big Brother Africa viewing joint. Facilities are not great. The masseuse was kind of cute, despite carrying a few extra pounds, but didn't seem to be interested in giving extras. Although it was late and she was tired, so another visit might yield better results. The rooms are only secluded by a curtain, though, so privacy may be an issue. The damage is 13, 000 for a massage.

Machame Health Club, Naguru: This Tanzanian place on Naguru just opened. It is not particularly notable. They offer massage for 20, 000 and a HJ was offered, for which I tipped 10, 000 (no money was discussed up front, so you can probably pay less).

Golden Lily, Kamwokya: I haven't visited myself, but it's supposed to have very nice decor and setting. A massage costs 40, 000. No idea if extras are offered.

Mosa Courts Health Club, near the Sheraton. Massage costs 25, 000, Aromatherapy 30, 000. I didn't try it because it didn't look particularly appealing. The room did not have privacy and the masseuse looked a bit on the lazy side.

I may just be having bad luck, because I know that there should be a ton of massage places that do offer full sex. Anyone is free to correct me, but it certainly seems like a scene that takes a lot more hunting than Nairobi, where the full sex places are fairly obvious. I don't know why that should be, but that seems to be the way it is.

During daytime its not easy at all. Unless you are a good looking or around 30.
