I agree with you that these bandits, so called dahalo, are not only protected by grigri. I know many afrtican countries and I know that if they continue to attack its also because of corruption. But if I speak about grigri its also because here quite all people believe in them very strongly.

What I can see also is that tourists are not really targeted, except two stories, one is the tsibihirina attack, the other an hotel attack in fiana area.

So, I would say, yes, mada has security issues, but may be not more than many countries.

Look at USA, massive murders by guns in school, in France with terrorists or some areas in Paris or around where we can't walk safely, even police cañnot. ,. Etc.

I know there was issues in Tana early in the year (when I was there in fact), and that was quite well ahead of the election and a bit unusual to see so early. This morning I was in tulear, hotel Serena, very nice hotel even if was on 1st floor, 2nd floor rooms seems even better, very girl friendly, ID's kept by reception, nice staff and breakfast room too.

Air mada was on time, we took off 15 minutes early!

Arrived tana, booked in océanis, ivato, had the hotel navette for 3 euros. But when I saw the location and then the hotel itself, I decided to move to tana center. Hotel is correct, it's a set of apartments in several buildings, with saloon, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. Not so bad. But totally isolated, not easy to get out, area looks not very friendly, no restaurant, only pizza to order.

So I paid 50%, and moved to New select close to LE glacier.

Taxi 50 k, 1 hour+ of car jams.

New select is ok but a bit old and "rustic", but ok for 1 night. In comparison sole hotel is luxury. But we are close to LE glacier which is good.

I discovered also les artistes, looks good restaurant, just behind new select, and also hotel with good rooms at 75 k. I couldn't visit as it is full now.

All other hotels named here in the range 75 to 95 k per night.

I took breakfast this morning and ask to see a room, very nice room, lot of wood, very clean, bathroom with shower and hot water. Only issue could be that many rooms have entrance and window on the side of restaurant, but others upstairs should be more quiet.

I ask if it's an issue if we bring girl friend, she said no, so I guess it's OK. But you need to cross the whole restaurant to get to your room, not sure if there is another entry.

Thanks a lot and totally agree with you, but arriving in this taxi brousse station, was a total mess and my only target was to get out from here ASAP, so I agree for the first one just reducing his first price to 20 k, too much yes, but quickly out of there! This a report after one month already in Mada. I will keep it at high level.

Majunga-As I already reported there is plenty of opportunities to pick up normal girl but for me this city was no more then 4 days regardless of sex.

Interesting point about arriving at midnight -- that's Air France -- but Air Madagascar is worse: 3 am! Kenyan, Ethiopian, Mauritius & South African flights arrive conveniently in the afternoon, when all the airport facilities are open, and one can be safely at the hotel in daylight.

Even a US Navy Seal will not resist if its a simple mugging. Whats the big deal. Don't drag around fancy smart phones or flashy jewelry. At night carry only 20 $ and a cheap Nokia. Never resist. Best recipe. A weapon can be turned very quickly against you. Train in Krav Maga. Best investment you can do. And keep on your toes. If you want to arm yourself take a strong tactical flashlight you can blind and hit an assailant in the face and improve on your fitness and running skills. I know of three people got themselves killed in Mombasa by resisting armed muggers. These people never operate alone. You might take one down and the other two kill you as it was the case with an Ex belgian Paracommando.

I lived in Kenya and now in Gambia. I know residents in Madagascar who have firearms and used them. Legal? I am not sure of. In most countries criminals are after your posessions you have in the house. The key is. Play poor. You ll not even see a flat screen TV set in my house in Gambia. My preferred weapon is a Panga or Brazilian machete. Perfectly legal and easily obtained locally. I have Iron bars in Front of my window and iron doors with 2 locks each. And I have Solar powered lighting. So I give any assailant a hard time. I never store a lot of money in the house. Keep it at the bank. Keep a low profile. Never show any valuables especially to chicas. Most jobs are inside Jobs. Having said that. Africa as a whole with the exception of South Africa and partially Kenya is a lot safer than say the US South America or even Europe.

In that thread of a french expat forum is mentioned: Firearms permit takes 3 years of legal residence. There is an armsdealer who offers 6. 35 mm pistols. For the house I recommend a Shotgun with BB Shot. You can get that on a hunting license. Concealed carry forget about.

After a month in Mada I visited all places north of Tana and had a mix feeling. This is also because at 10 PM I am watching Netflix and go to sleep as my Mongering activities take place all day up to 8 pm. I only go for Non pro with lighter skin and tall. Yes all combination together are hard to get but I got a few.

Landing in Toliara airport on time I refuse to any offer of the Taxis and walk 200 m out of the airport to the main road, then another 200 m right. Then saw a few PusPus drivers and choose a 14 years old kid, 1 k to amazon hotel? Yes he reply but I knew he know shit about french so I pooled 1 k note and he said yes again. 7 km for 1 k this kid can win the Olympics as a medium distance runner.

I stop at "Sud Plaza hotel" next to Gastro pizza this is the center of the action. Room facing the sea only 30 k and its fantastic place not a concrete building but set in a garden directly on the sea. No hot water but a large bucket. No problem I have 2 L of electrical pot so I boil water to that bucket. Fantastic sound of the waves.

ATM are all busy but one that no one there the location is directly in the entrance of Score supermarket at -23.356633, 43.669456.

There are many amazing things about Toliara one of the is lack of any car or TukTuk so its a deadly quiet place with only human sounds. There are 4 tuktuk in the market but they never drive the streets. At any moment you can see one or two cars per area. For me coming from Diego this was a dream.

Toliara is a city like the old western movies as it cover with sand and many coconut trees very different from any other city in Mada except Morondava. 15 years ago I fucked every girl in Morondava but then I came back there nothing to find.

The area from hotel Sud Plaza to amazone hotel is full of girls at all ages. And the most amazing thing is that they all approach me I had to do nothing and I am talking only about non pro. I refuse to take 3 girls as they did not comply with my criteria. OK time to go to Bazar-be which is the central market opposite Serena hotel. We arrived to Mangily but I got pooled out of the TB for passport check in one of the control points. The police saw two stamps, one I got in Ivato and the other was the extension visa. He saw playing stupid to get some bribe but I was laughed and told him that the director of the minister the interior in Tana is a close friend of my and no problem with that visa extension. When he heard that that I know the director he got serious and said that my visa look fine.

The center of Mangily is on the paved road all shops are there and its parallel to the beach. Around 200 m or so. My GF said Hi to many of her family as we walked to look for hotel. I took the 'LE relais de Mangily' which you can find it location on google map its both restaurant and hotel. Most of the bungalow are 30 k but we saw an apartment bungalow which had 2 bedroom and living room. Price was 80 k but I refuse to pay and told him I will give him 35 k because lack of clients. He agreed but said that if some client will come I will move to a normal bungalow. I Agreed.

The beach look nice but for me Mangily was a no go destination as quickly I find it limitations which for me did not deliver. Here is why. First Mangily is not connected to the power grid its means that for 30 k hotels they use a generator from 5 PM and all day no electricity. There are not net over the windows and this place is full of deadly mosquitoes. If you close the windows you will lower the AirFlow considerably.

Lack of power grid connectivity also related to the ability of the fridge to make the drinks really cold so all places on the main road had not cold drink as I like it. They probably using generators for two hours and turn them off to save fuel.

Another thing is the beach boys that want to sell you everything from a lobster BBQ to a about trip and this is crazy they will not leave you a minute. Sure you can get a higher class of accommodation a bit out of them but you will pay around 120 k or more to minimize all the limitations I had mentioned.

For me one of the most important things is fast internet connection I need it to my business and to watch movies and youtube. My hotel has no WiFi as no power to any kind of router and I don't know what is the situation for a more expensive establishment as I don't pay those tourist prices.

In toulier I have mentioned watching Netflix as the internet is the fastest in Mada. The reason is simple, Madagascar is connected to the internet network using under sea fiber optic from touliara to Africa. So Toliara is the main internet hub to Mada. To download Netflix movies such as the season two of the 'iron fist' just go to https://www.torrentdownloads.me/ on your laptop and less then two hours latter you get the entire season two in one click.

Girls-My GF has a sister same height above 170 cm and bubble butt she is 18 and work in Mangily main road from 4 PM as she sell food in a small stand. She is black not brown as my GF and a world class body. Just walk on the main road and look very carefully at all food vendors untill you see her. She is ready to go. In Fact she came to her room to visit her sister and I could fuck her next to her sister but she ask money. Bad example to her sister. I have the GPS coordinates of her food stalls as I took a photo which includes geo tagging.

The best thing for non pro to soften the atmosphere is to play Malagash Music clips on youtube that's why I like to stay in Toliara and we both agreed that one night is probably enough. So we went back.

I know that for many Mangily is a dream and my limitations are a non issue but don't forget that Toliara is a big city and there are 100 times more selection of girls, Fast internet in room good food and a cold breeze from the sea. Hotel Sud plazza is directly on the sea and sometimes I use blanket as this is better then the best Aircon.

So I have nothing bad to talk about Mangily but I feel very nice in Toliara city on the sea surrounded with 18 years old girls and all the comfort of the big city.

Last thing my flight to Tana cost me 133 USD at Toliara office. Note that the price is not the same so for example Monday price are 180 usd and two days latter it drop to 130 usd. So the best is to not tell the AirMad agent a specific day to your flight and tell him a week span. He will look for the best price within that week period. Again I paid 133 usd.

One remark about accomodations in Mangily, you can find higfh class room with less than 120 k, I was in Bella Donna, bungalow with balcony on the beach, for 80 k with hot water and quite good wifi around restaurant, but I also had a 30 k sim card from Orange with 5 Gb + 5 Gb free at night, not so bad when wifi was going down or from the room. No generator noise at all as the generator is away from the hotel and huge battery capacity, but full electricity 24/24.

Also cooking was very high class here, but the total cost per day with room + BF / lunch / dinner was about 160 k, but you can easily lower food cost by going around. But agreed its far above your 30 k. For room.

For mosquitoes, yes there are, but some spray was enough to be quiet.

And agreed also, finding nice girls there is not easy, even some Toliara girls are hanging there saying they are on vacation. But thanks for the one you gave coordinates. Toliara far superior for girls, so many hanging around in Amazone area.

Just returned from a close to 4 weeks trip. At Ivato AirMada office I paid 336 for Tana-Sambava-Tamatave-Tana. Sambava and Anthalaha were a big disappointment. Tamatave was OK and so was Tana. However, for those who take a broader interest in Mada besides chasing its beautiful girls, I here wish to recommend an English speaking guide, who turned out to be most helpful. You make a good point. I found that the US dollar was up 10% since my last visit but prices for some things, not all, have gone up about the same. My hotel for instance is the same price in ariary as 2 years back (Diego) so I am actually getting a 10% discount. I am paying the same for shags, 30-40ST and 50 LT. If they don't want to take 50 I don't care. I prefer daytime shagging anyway. And as Neddy just did, sleep with my pillow!

The LT rate at Nosy Be two months ago was 50.000 Ariary. French guys said it starts lower, 30.000 Ariary. Nobody asked for 100.000 there. But in comparison to the hotel rates this is nothing. If you want to spend your vacation there, you should know Ambatoloaka is a small area. I think two weeks is enough and then change the place or check the island for some other activities. Morondava:
- massage without extras 25 k, but nice masseuse, gave her phone but no news after.
- Patricia and her friend met in the street, paid some beer and meal 20 k, then both came to hotel, about 2 hours doing FS to both, nice exp 40 k.
- girl met in the street, came to room soon, 1 h30 with FS, 20 k.

Tana:
- MP lalana russia street, anna, +FS 60 k.
- hotel serena massage + FS 45 k.
- hotel serena massage + FS other masseuse 80 k (too much paid I guess).

This shows that prices can vary from places, based on your reports also, and I think also that I have been a bit cheap charlie sometimes. Nosy Be is the main spot for tourism in Madagascar. There are also couples. So don't book there. These information is about three years old it could change. At Nosy Be I would ask before booking, try to book a small hotel and book for two persons.

I confirm the place to be for mongering is Ambatoloaka, the short street with bars and restaurants will provide good food and nice girls. My feeling is that they are all super pro's, but it's expected in such a touristy place. Rates for long time and short time are matching what has been mentioned few times in this thread, so just confirming that the season is low here in terms of tourist (90% of foreigners are retired French / Italians / etc around 60/70 years old.), but girls are still holding the position! .

Yes. You can get laid in Tamatave. But for a number of reasons it will not be my favourite place in Mada. Tamatave is a good option if you want to escape the chilly highlands and do not want to fly domestic. Than T. Is your nearest option on the shore. Tamatave is also more expensive than other cities. But. Still dirt cheap. You ll find good food. For breakfast highly recommended Adam and Eve. Lunch I went often to La Terasse. For upscale dining try La Maison. Accommodation. I slept in Eden Hotel. But besides from being dirt cheap and offers hot showers and a big balcony the rest is rather dingy. But only 150 m from Taxi Be. Try the Anjary. Excellent value for money.

The chicas. Good selection. But to get topshelf nonpros you need to be very lucky or be a resident. But good semi and pro selection. Prices. I consider T. The second most expensive city after Tana. All is there.
Hunting venues. I really went to Taxi Be. Other clubs New York and Pattaya. But didn't go. Pandora should be good when it reopens on Oct. 26th.
To the north you have Hotel 501 with a decent beach but no facilities. And you can't swim there. So for beach lovers its foulpointe 60 km to the north. For me too far. But there is a decent Olympic Swimming pool at Miramar Hotel. Not much to do during day time. But that's a general Problem in all Mada Towns. For 14 days ok.
Now back in Tana. Tomorrow flight to Diego.

I continue to roam the planet. Africa that is. But I must admit Mada has some inherent flaws for the short term traveller. Most cities you're done very quickly with the sightseeing. While chica hunting takes of course a lot of time. I agree. Stray dog. Drink a coffee here a beer there. I found other countries better in that regard. Love Uganda and Rwanda. Mada towns are at certain times ghost cities. Especially Tana and Tamatave. A German told me. Even the police is afraid to venture out after 2100 hrs. What can you say.

Annual Thai retirement visas are still easy to get for a withdrawable $24,250 bank deposit. The Philippines need $10,000 which must be left in a local bank.

Madagascar charges $62 for 3 months' maximum tourist visit but then one must leave and re-enter. Does anyone know if Mada limits stays to a maximum of 6 months in any 12, like most Western countries do to dissuade travellers from working or residing? I recently left Cambodia because of the absolute invasion of Chinese and am currently looking for a new country and finding it hard going. One reason is I am looking for something cooler but with the same ease of visas and similar prices. Mada fits the bill but I have to agree with some guys below. There is just not much to do other than eat, drink and chase pussy. Sounds like paradise but those of us who have done so for a few months know paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be!

Add in the shit infrastructure and absolute poverty and it becomes less attractive but as of now I have not found a replacement and will continue to visit until I am sick of it or something better comes along (unlikely).

If you want to know is it a good place for retire try it and talk to these retired French there. There is a reason why so many of them are there. It's cheap. Problem in Madagascar is crime, infrastructure and healthcare. But Reunion is not so far. Maybe also an opportunity if you need go out and go in soon again.

Salama. On 24th October I went back with Cotisse to Tana. The return trip took even longer as the almost new Sprinter Bus kept on refusing to start. Not suitable for developing countries. On a particular steep slope before reaching the high plateau at Moramanga that thing overheated and spew out great clouds of white steam. What a piece of shite. After freezing my ass off at 11! degrees only we finally reached destination after almost 10! hours. Thankfully the Relais offers steaming hot showers. After spending 2 nights in Tana I left for the airport. It just took 90! Minutes for my old R4 taxi to do the 15 km run. So. Leave well early. And Gendarmerie und Police Nationale Checkpoints. So always carry your passport lest you being shaken down for cado kely.

After a smooth flight of 1 hour and 50 minutes grand baie comes in sight. Touchdown at Antsiranana or short Diego still affectionately called by the locals. If Air Maybe flies. No complaints at all. Almost new ATR 72's Turboprops. Spot on time.

My first impression. Totally different vibes. Any malgache town is different. The city center is orderly. Even some street lights. Laid back. Hot. First I wanted to check in the Hotel de la Poste Annexe. What looked good on pics turned out to be a dud. For 70.000 the room was halfway acceptable. But as I entered the bathroom. A shock. The walls black with mould. Absolute no go. NFW. So I settled in the Valiha Hotel. Barely a stone throw away from Le Vahine. For 40.000 really decent room with fridge TV and hot shower. In the same night I came crashing down. The drastic change of climate coupled again with another massive bout of Le Merde Malgache plus la grippe this time meant that La Buse had his wings clipped and his range massively curtailed. Down and out.

As I am slowly recovering nevertheless I started to survey. First of all. Around Rue colbert expats french and belgians in astonishing numbers. You feel almost as if you're still in colonial times. And many not in retirement age. One is curious how these guys make their living. Alas. Time to talk about the chicas. Le Vahine. A shadow of its former self. Open makuti roof. Loads of absolutely expired hardcores ply their trades preying on one or the other unsuspecting tourist. Everything moves to Taxi Be after 2200 hrs. There basically the same crowd. To be fair it was Sunday and Monday night and I was still recovering I called it an early night around 2300. But both places have been a sausage fest with white males dominating the scene. I saw a few maybe 3 or 4 doable chicas. So rather slim pickings. For me La Vahine and Taxi Be absolute tourist haunts.
Positive side. Sit at Boulangerie Amicale for petit dejeuner. Some drop dead beauties slurping ice cream went past. wow. Or at around 1700 when the sun sets chicas come out in pairs and walk down Rue Colbert for an evening stroll. Some of them absolute hot stunners. So its not all grey.

A few stunners but they're usually already in tow with a vazaha; the rest no better in quality than in most other places like Diego and Tamatave. Sunday up the road at Tati Chris is highly recommended, more authentic and fewer vazaha, mostly Malagasy out for a good time. Diego. I still try to get to grips with the place. After spending a week at LE Valiha sweating my a. Off, time to move ops out of Vazahaville Rue Colbert that is. Time to move to the gasy part of town. But first. After La Buse has recovered, time to give Vazahaville a last chance. Halloween is on. To my surprise. Its been celebrated in Diego as well. Loads of youngsters move about in scary costumes. Quite a number of interesting chicas move about. All in groups. So nigh impossible to single out or make contact. And most again in pairs or gasy BFs. So tough going. No chance for a contact. Another visit at Taxi Be confirmed my worst fears. An even worse sausage fest than last time. Again same unfavourable picture. Loads of Vazaha. Same expired WGs. Worst selection I came across in Mada. A few gems. Yes. But again nothing compared to the selection of putes and SWs and Semis I came across in Tamatave. RIEN. But I ll check it out on the weekend. If you live here I am sure you can get laid no problem. I saw some service providers moving about. But not even they are service minded. I was waving to one across the street when I was sitting at boulangerie amicale. But. To no avail. In Kenya the chic would be on my table within 30 seconds. But here. I think they don't want to be seen as pute. Hehe. Rather as expensive girlfriend.

I moved ops to Hotel Terrasse de Voyageur. Guys. I love the place. Old but well kept. A sweeping view over Diego et environs from the rooftop terrace. Cool room on the third floor for 49.000 AR. Perfect. And in the middle of the action apparently. And almost no Vazaha in sight. Just how I like it. And what does La Buse sees with his trained eye? The area around the hotel bristles with ST hotels. Which can only mean one thing hehe. Guess what. I shall report. But first. Time for my pastis on the rooftop terrace. And after. A bundle of fresh green produce. A bundle of khat sets you back 5000 AR.

The last couple of days were indeed filled with interesting experiences which confirmed for me. Please don't come to Diego for mongering. You can do anything there for example Kitesurfing. Rent a moto or a Quad. Visit some National Parks. Go dancing. But don't come to Diego to get laid by Topshelf that is 7 and above chicas. The reason is. If you are a Topshelf red hot pute from Diego et environs wanting to make a quick buck and tell your family nothing about it? Exactly. All are in NOSY BE doing exactly that. Now. I tried all in the book. For me Diego is a target poor environment. I am not willing to invest a lot of time and effort. That's what's needed here. I had a contact of a red hot 8 19 yo chica from Diego via Afro. After meeting her at Pizza Gastronomy we went to bed together. What did it mean. As far as I am concerned chicas break down in 3 different categories.

At late night you see none of them as walking from the residential areas at midnight is too dangerous and a tuktuk aller retour is 4000 AR at night.

B. Les putes. The same crowd which frequents LE Vahine after Taxi Be migrates to Nouvel hotel after midnight. Out of the 30 or so there is around 5 doable the rest expired.

C. Gasy non pro chicas with some money. They are usually in pairs or 3. Prime target group for me. Most are older or plain and simple ugly. There were about 4 or 5 potentials. But these chicas are not there to get laid rather to enjoy themselves. If you approach them they let you bounce off like a rubber ball from concrete.

That's why LaBuse called it a night a 0230. I could have tried outside there were chicas hanging around. But I am not being pressured. I fitfully slept alone.

I ll head to Nosy Be on Tuesday.

My final take on Diego. For me probably the worst p4 p destination in Mada. Why? For a limited time you need to be extremely lucky. First of all white sausage fest. But also plenty of gasy man who rock and roll. I am a white 55 y/ old male. There were some french mongers who where trying to score. So imagine maybe 10 doable chicas being swarmed. Funny enough. Nobody bothered looking at the hardcores. I think they wait for the cruise ship passengers. So abysmal. If you want to spend a lot of time Diego can be ok. Stay 3 months there or become a resident than you ll access the good chicas. For 1 or 2 weeks. Don't waste your time.

SE.I did the Tana Nosy Be with Besady as Cotisse was full. It was ok, the buses were fine but still on the cramped model but at least they did not overload with people, everyone had one seat available. They travel in group of 3 or 4 buses together, for safety against bandits and accident. I left tana 1 pm and arrived Ambanja 10 am, then bus to Ankify, then boat to Nosy Be. Expect a 24 door to door, pretty tiring I'd say. If I had to do it again, I'd break it in Majunga since it's halfway on the path.

I also did Ankify Diego, shitty road for sure but took from 9 am to 5 pm, honest compared to the other trip above!

SE.Yes the departure is near Cotisse in Tana. Besady plus is the only company which runs Tana to Nosy Be nonstop. Ask the Taxi drivers they know. Its reliable and the price is all in including the bateau rapide from Ankify. My mate used it a month ago. Its a long trip but bearable if you can sleep in the bus. Don't expect the same level of comfort as cotisse. They're Top notch.The road from Ambanja to Diego is more or less ok. But in the rainy season forget it. I saw three swept away bridges. The riverbeds are dry now. But in a month from now the road is liable to be blocked. Maybe in April it ll be open again. DO NOT use UTA. They stop at every hut and pile people in. Thats why it took so long. There is KOFIFI and KOFMAD they run direct Sprinter Busses from Ambanja to DIEGO and vice versa. I'll use KOFMAD next week from Ambanja to Mahajunga. From Mahajunga to Tana you can ride in style with Cotisse VIP. Thats my plan.

Daytime.

Not much to do besides eating, going to beach or shopping in market / bazar / shops. The sun is hot but spending time around could give the chance to find non pros around the city. If you go time, go for it. Badoo is a good app for daytime online hookup. Hotel Sharon has a pool that can be accessed paying 7 k ariary, nice deal.
