Nothing has been posted on Swaziland for years. Time to start a little discussion on this little country.
Sorry to say in reply to the prior post that the AIDS infection rate in Swaziland is very high. The 40% may be a particular demographic segment of the population. They were slow in responding to the problem, but are now started. A couple years ago I was pleased to note a bowl of condoms on the counter in the public library in Mbabne as evidence that they were starting to address the problem.
Still, it is a beautiful country and the people are pleasant.
If any readers need directions, start at the Royal Swasi Sun Hotel casino in Ezulwini and see what is there. If that does not produce results, drive out of the Royal Swazi and turn right toward Manzini. Drive roughly 2km until you see a complex to the left and below the level of the road. If you cross the bridge, you have gone too far. The complex is a combination of the Happy Valley Motel, the SirLoin steakhouse, the Why Not disco, a bar/pool room, etc. Most assuredly there will be action in the bar/pool room.

Proctor 55, thanks for evoking such pleasant memories of the Happy Valley motel/restaurant/pool hall/strip joint/pick up bar. I used to have some great times there when I was working in Mozambique and would drive over to spend the week end. I agree, the country is gorgeous and the people are terrific. Not only that, but unlike most of the rest of Africa, the roads are in good shape and you can actually drive pretty easily.

Swaziland was the place for white South Africans to mix and party with non whites during the apartheid years. The Why Not night club was the place of action in the 70's, 80's and the early 90's with plenty of beautiful Swazi and Mozambican women. Since the demise of apartheid in South Africa and the advent of peace in Mozambique Swaziland's place as a party destination has been on the wane. Nowadays most Swazi women who used to operate out of the Why Not are in Johannesburg - The Summit Club - or working as freelancers (see the classifieds in the Star newspaper). Mozambican women remain in Maputo since business seems to be better there. There are still many beautiful girls available in Swaziloand but beware of AIDS. King Mswati III has 10 wives (inkosikati in siswati, the local language) and 3 official girl friends (maphivela) and this gives every Swazi male the licence to practise polygamy thereby spreading the disease even more. Having said all this, I must admit Swazi women are some of the sexiest women I have come across in Africa - well educated, well spoken and with a real zest for having fun.

Absolutely no posts on Swaziland for years, and now we find that that there are multiple members out there who have enjoyed the country and seem to express the same appreciation for the style and tone of the country and the people. It is a somewhat unique country. I do hope they can work through their current difficulties.

I neglected to comment on GoodEnough's note on driving in Swaziland. (I appreciate that this has nothing to do with a mongering hobby.) I agree that the roads are quite good, but driving takes constant attention to watch for people and cows on the road. The new motorway road down from Mbabne to the south has taken all of the sport out of getting around the slow trucks going up or down. As with other activities, caution is needed.
I would never offer a person a ride at home, but have done that many times in Swaziland. Sometimes their English is very limited or nonexistent, but it has been nice to have the company even if conversation is limited. On a couple occasions the border post staff has asked if I would give one of their people a ride back home for their day off. It has always been interesting.

Nice catch on the article. I had missed it. I doubt that the lifting of the ban makes much difference.

As I've written before, even if the HIV and AIDS statistics are wildly inflated, they are still much higher in most African countries than in Europe or the U.S., and must be taken seriously. We mongers should always take precautions and use condoms - this is NOT a negotiable item!
If you're worried about finding good condoms whereever you are travelling, then just bring a couple dozen of your favorite brand with you.

Probably similar to Uganda, Tanzania, a few other places, where I have first-hand seen neighborhoods & villages missing a significant percentage of the 15-45 age group; also offices where many of the most productive workers have died during the last 5 - 7 years.
Yes, it's very sad and frustrating, especially as this epidemic is controllable and totally avoidable, unlike past epidemics of TB, etc. where one can get sick and die just by walking down the street and getting sneezed on.

thought i would relate a memory of a trip to the manzini valley; i think that is what it was called. funny, when you are so young, it seems like yeasterday i was there; i`m talking 1988. one night a chick in one of the casino`s picked me up. i was a real greenhorn. we fucked in my car at the time, and hotel, it was great. i still remember paying her r5.00

Every year, in early September, thousands of maidens meet to gather reeds from the banks of the Usutu river to present to the King for construction of his new traditional palace. On the final day of the ceremony all the maidens dance in the King's presence in their traditional clothes at the King's stadium in Ludzitzini. Thousands of topless maidens dancing in the hot sun is a sight to behold. In recent years, the reed dance has become a tourist attraction and a good place to meet young girls. The attached photo speaks for itself!
The reed dance attracts up to 50,000 bare-breasted "virgins" every year. It's also an opportunity for King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, to pick up women. This has been quite controversial because the 38-year-old king decreed a ban against sex with virgins in 2001 in an effort to rein in HIV.
Even if the king may not select you, other fatcats in attendance my.
"I want to live a nice life, have money, be rich, have a BMW and a cellphone," 16-year-old Zodwa Mamba said a year ago when she was strutting her stuff.

I am a fairly regular visitor to the Royal Swazi Hotel and Casino from Mozambique (only 2 and a half hours from Maputo) and have begun to notice a more steady stream of working ladies beginning to frequent the casino over the past year or so.
They tend to arrive at about 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights, and after an amble about the casino floor - no doubt checking out the single guys who are winning - they proceed to the bar for some liquid refreshment.

Forget getting into the reed dance. Its by invitaion only now, and they are enforcing the maidens to be clothed. Ie no nipples will be shown, only the Bwana will be able to view that stuff. You are right. I made this trip thru southern africa last year and the outlook of the girls in botswana, s. A. And swaziland was somehow disappointing, only mozambican girl were hotter. In general I find girls in east and west africa much more attractive than in the south. Furthermore girls in francophone countries are a bit classier than in anglophone. Regarding whole africa I would fancy the tutsi in rwanda and the bobo women in burkina faso.

Barba, you do not need the Reed Dance in Swazi to score some serious stuff. I used to take long week ends there when I was working in Mozambique. We would drive over for a few days and just lose ourselves at the Happy Valley Motel/Pool Hall/Night Club/*****house and not reappear till we were ready to take the drive back. Great memories of a terrific and beautiful country.

The only thing that is scary about the area is the fact that more than 26% of the adults have HIV. An average life expectancy of 31 years is just crazy in this millenuim. Lived for a long time in Africa: it is in many countries river or dam water going straight into the water distribution system, especially in the rural areas. Getting this brown water was already a blessing, otherwise it would be running around with drums or jerrycans. Also Tajikistan has chocolate milk with sugar (well, mud and sand) during the rains coming out of the tap so it is not a specific African phenomenon.

During my frequent travels to africa I was rarely lucky to get under a shower and the water began to pour purely as we take it for granted in our world. They have massive problems with water in swaziland too. It doesn't mean at all that the girls were that dirty or that they surprisingly turned white after all this black color was washed away in the tube. And it took about 30 minutes to fill the tube with this muddy water
Well, as the disco was closed at this time you picked up the girls from the sports bar at happy valley motel but the selection was limited.

The lodge is GF and there is a large central banda that houses a bar, lounge and restaurant. Visitors and locals hang here and it is easy to engage with others especially later in the evenings. There is also a good restaurant next door that is worth a visit.
