I've been using ISG for a while now and since I'm currently in China, I have read up on most of the messages going back at least 6 months. I'm happy to report that I did found out about a new way to gain access to hidden apartment style massage parlors (which means more likely than not that they provide extra services). I won't name any specific Spa here to avoid been seen as a typical switch-and-bait advertiser faking as a user. To use this method you need to be able to at least speak conversational mandarin and be able to read some basic Chinese characters. I know not everyone can do this so I apologize for those you who cannot share in on this new method (I'm sure some of you already know this, it's just that I haven't seen anyone posting it).Just want you to know that your report is appreciated. If you command enough language skills, download a Chinese app (perhaps it has an English version, didn't check) called 大20247;28857;35780;Dianping" a lot of you might be familiar with this. It's essentially the Chinese Yelp. Once you open the app, there is a section called entertainment / relaxation (20241;38386;23089;20048, and in that there is another icon you can click which is spa / foot massage. Once you get in there, by default it will show you a list of spas near you ranked by the app's algorithm. Now comes the tricky party that requires some Chinese reading ability or maybe just some luck. Looking at the names of those spas, pick out the ones with seductive words or what one would consider inappropriate words for a proper, legitimate spa. For instances, there is a "sweet peach spa," a "bing bing private talk spa," or a "royal court lingering connection spa. " It's not the easiest to translate some of the names of these spas. After you need to pick out these suspicious spas, check out their images, if the image is showing a half naked girl giving a massage or something similarly alluding, then it's almost 100% a spa that only / mostly offers extra services. Even if the image is nothing revealing, if the name is inappropriate enough, its safe to assume its not a legit massage. Then you just need to click on the phone icon and call them for their exact address.

I know this is a very difficult process and not many people can do this. All I can say is that once you establish a connection with one of these places, you can arrange different girls through the MMS and don't have worry about looking for new places.I found something using this method which I'm almost sure is not veggie massage, but I'm always a bit afraid of the package prices. This place apparently has been around for 5 years now (at least according to the masseuse), and it used to have a storefront but now its only apartment style due to the heightened scrutiny and for the safety of both the customers and the owner. It owns several apartments in the same building, and if you are a returning customer / member, you can use the smaller studio style rooms upon reservation. There is also a 2/3 beds for new customers. This is their way of not putting all eggs in one basket I guess? So if one apartment get raided, only a few people will go down.

Anyway, the MMS has all kinds of girls you can choose from, some part-times and some professionals. The part-times are better looking and hotter (students and people with day jobs I think), whereas the professionals are better at what they are there for. Took a poke around Dianping as DavidinBJ wrote about earlier, not able to get a whole ton of info from it yet though. I've been using ISG for a while now and since I'm currently in China, I have read up on most of the messages going back at least 6 months. I'm happy to report that I did found out about a new way to gain access to hidden apartment style massage parlors (which means more likely than not that they provide extra services). I won't name any specific Spa here to avoid been seen as a typical switch-and-bait advertiser faking as a user. To use this method you need to be able to at least speak conversational mandarin and be able to read some basic Chinese characters. I know not everyone can do this so I apologize for those you who cannot share in on this new method (I'm sure some of you already know this, it's just that I haven't seen anyone posting it)..So I can confirm that David's technique works. My apologies for not writing this report when the details were fresher in my mind. You know how it is when you travel. The rates, though, were just what was reported by other users of KittyBeijing's services.

But about a year ago, I visited Beijing and connected with KittyBeijing on WeChat (which took a while, but was much easier when I was in the city). She sent me photos of four girls; I chose one.

Photographer Valya Lee spent two months working undercover and taking photos on her phone.

Like many things in China, sex work is illegal but continues to flourish behind closed doors. In many cases, escort agencies masquerade as karaoke bars, which are known as karaoke television bars, or "KTV bars" for short.

Many of these KTV bars are exactly what they claim to be—places to get drunk and sing karaoke—but a large number also allow their clients to proposition employees. For this reason police treat all venues with scepticism, and KTV bars regularly get raided. Proving that a place is actually facilitating sex work is difficult, though, so police often settle for fining managers who illegally employ foreign women—as many places do.

For two months, one such woman was Russian freelance photographer Valya Lee, who worked as a "party girl" at several Beijing clubs. She captured her experience on a camera phone to illuminate an industry the government claims doesn't exist.

We spoke to Valya about what she saw during her two-month tenure in Beijing, and what she learned about sex work in modern China.

VICE: Hey Valya, can you tell me a bit about yourself and how this project came about?

Valya Lee: Sure. Well, as you know my name is Valya Lee. I'm 25-years-old and I'm a freelance photographer based in Russia. I was born close to the Chinese border so I've studied Chinese language and culture for several years, and I guess that's why I'm interested in projects that examine relations between Russia and China.

And to capture this series you got a job in a KTV bar?

That's right. The girls are called "hostesses" or "party girls," although the direct translation from Chinese is "a girl who provides entertainment in the company of alcohol". Most employees are Chinese, but a lot of girls also come from Russia or Ukraine and their main task is to get a client drunk and ensure they have a good time. No one except my friends knew I was shooting photos inside the clubs. Often managers would confiscate my phone before a shift so later I began carrying two phones: one for my manager to take, and one for me to take photos on.

This sounds pretty dicey. Did anyone ever see your camera?

No one ever saw me taking pictures. Phones are so commonplace that they've become completely invisible, but obviously working in a KTV bar came with its own dangers.

What was the scariest thing that happened while you worked undercover?

Probably the scariest thing happened on one of my last days. This client who was known by everyone at the club suggested I spend the night with him, but I refused. I didn't think refusing would be a big deal, but my manager really tried to persuade me. "This is a very powerful man, a big boss," he told me. Then he started threatening me, saying "you're not legal here and I can hand you over to the police if you don't cooperate. " I was scared but I knew it was a bluff. When he told me he would call the police I said: "well, let's make that call together. " At that point he backed off but I decided it was time to finish the project.

I'm guessing guys tried to sleep with you a lot, given you were pretending to be a "party girl. " How did you deal with this?

Yeah, the first time I was propositioned really stressed me out because the room I was in wasn't "okay," which is what we called the safe room. But then the proposals became more frequent and I either just ignored them or told people that I refused.

How did the club work? Can you walk us through an average night?

It all starts in the casting room where the girls wait to be chosen by a man. The more expensive the KTV is, the higher the requirements for the standards of beauty: the girls have to be tall and they need to look like models. I even worked in one club where the girls were chosen for their vocal abilities. In these rooms, men point fingers at women or they tell the madam—known as "Mami"—which girl they like. This is also when some customers inform Mami they need sexual services. In this case, before leading girls to such men, Mami usually asks the girls "are you okay?" If they nod the deal is done.

Then what happens?

Then you just hang out with your client. After some time working in the clubs, I developed a standard set of conversation topics and always kept my clients' glasses topped up. Clients usually wanted girls to drink a lot but we quietly spilled our drinks onto the floor. The clients would then sing, either alone or with me. When they found out that I was Russian they always wanted to sing songs like Katyusha, Moscow Nights, or something from Vita's repertoire.

Were all the girls in your club okay with having paid sex with clients?

I saw a lot of Chinese women afraid of losing their jobs, so they tried to fulfil all of their clients' requests. Foreign women such as myself didn't have so much pressure though, especially as we knew that half of everything we'the earn would be taken by Mami due to the risk of clients handing over foreign girls to the police as a way to avoid paying. All the girls knew this was a risk so I personally never met any foreign woman who'the slept with a client.

So given that sex work is illegal, how do these bars operate?

All of them have a good security system, so if the police arrive, they know in advance. But still, I had to hide in the locker room or in the parking lot several times. If you're suspected to be a foreign sex worker, you are likely to face deportation and pay a large fine.

What did you learn about corruption while you were there?

I think corruption is the same everywhere: if you have money and power you can do anything, regardless of the law. But having said that, I was always surprised by the way managers kept reiterating that their venues didn't provide sexual services, only to get asked to spend a night with a client by exactly the same people the following night. This happened everywhere.

What were the clients like?

There were all completely different because different KTVs attract different crowds. You can meet highly paid specialists, teachers, and civil servants. Foreigners are very rare—at least while I was working, I never met any.

Tell us about the Chinese girls you worked with. Who were they and where were they from?

There were girls from lots of different provinces. I once met a girl who was about 19 years old, and it was obvious she was uncomfortable working but she'the always get quickly chosen. Then one day she was kicked out of a room after a client saw she had braces on her teeth. She got fired after that incident. Apparently she'the left home for Beijing where she wanted to study acting.

Many girls work in KTV bars because they don't have enough money to pay for their studies or to repay loans. Usually no one tells their relatives where they work. Even if women hate the job, they often can't leave because they become accustomed to the high earnings. Other work just doesn't provide the same income.

In general, what was the main thing you learned from working in KTV bars?

I remember when I used to see Russian girls working as go-go dancers, I'the judge them for not behaving properly. But now, after walking in their shoes, I decided that you really can't judge a book by its cover.

Extending on my past review, I visited with another one of Kitty's girls later during my recent trip to Beijing. I have never been to one of those places but I have read that there are saunas all over China where you can pick a girl out of a line up and have full service. The Massage Spa up in the second floor in the building on the south side of Datun Lu, west of Olympic Park, across the road from the National Zoological Museum is not perfectly reliable, but reliable-ish. In 2019 their price menu topped off at Y500, which included shower before and after and manual relief. After they finally re-opened after Spring Festival, that had climbed to Y600, with Y700 including ladies in their 30's or early 40's with seemingly medically enhanced assets freeing those assets up to be included in the massage after the flip. I'm no expert on number scaling technicians, but I reckon each of them would have been a 7/8 a decade back and working in a higher end place, back when the medical enhancements were closer to new.

There is a top end service above Y1,000 which mentions fancy rose massage oil, I'm not sure whether it includes anything additional on the menu than the expensive oil.

But even there is not entirely reliable. The one I use regularly is the mobile one. It just has you put in your mobile number and texts back a verification code that you put in, to prove that the phone number you are writing down when you check in places on a sheet of paper that also has your temperature check at that time is not a fake or someone else's phone number.

There's also one that proves you have done your health check to get approved to come into China. Since I've been in Beijing since September, I have not had to use that one, so I don't know it's details.

There are three main packages in the middle tier, and then there are even more expensive packages I did not try. The three main packages in the middle tier are the Y800 ish meridian massage, the Y1400 "tenderness" massage, and the Y1900 "awakening" massage. Despite the promise of "extra" service, there wasn't any extra service detected for the meridian massage. It was a reasonably good massage from a reasonably attractive technician in her 20's, but the Y400 oil massage from the nicer massage place on Datun Lu from their experienced 40 year old technicians would be every bit as good as a massage, and half the price. You are paying Y400 for having an attractive technician in her pretty qipao and being in a massage spa with good luck goldfish in their tanks longer than your forearm and likely heavier than your entire arm.

The tenderness massage has several phases. First, unlike leaving you to take your own massage, after you rinse off in the shower, she soaps you up from head to toe There is a relaxation massage phase, then a body to body phase. In which the technician remains fully clad in her qipao. Then an "erotic" massage phase, then a prostate health maintenance phase, and a final relaxation phase. The next to last phase finds you with your underwear pulled down and on your hands and knees, with the massage proceeding from the prostate and working forward. As far as maintaining prostate health, if totally emptying the tanks supports prostate health, the devotees of this message likely have healthy prostates. As a form of manual relief, it is rather remarkable, but as far as the difference from the regular manual relief available at Y600 along Datun Road, the extra Y800 does not seem anything like value for money.

The awakening massage is more aggressive. Rather than a qipao, the technical wears a black minidress. West of the Jing Guang race track south side of the street across from XieDao are a handful of Spas, had some nice ones there too, all between 20 to 30, HJ, BJ, all for less than 300. Contacted a girl from that XHG website via QQ. The Beijing Marriott Northeast is slightly out of the way, so anyone requiring discretion may like this location. For daytime rendezvous, there's a full sized Starbucks in the lobby that can be accessed from a separate door, not only from the lobby. As long as the lady dresses like a civilian, it's not hard to take a few steps towards from the Starbucks to the elevators (a room card is still required to choose a floor). The elevators are next to but behind the reception desk. Just wait until staff are busy with someone, then stroll right in.

Basically you walk past the first set of elevators on ground level and turn right and right again, there is a second set of elevators and absolutely nobody there.
