All is right with the world.Long time lurker, first time poster agreeing, I just dropped by the BBSes near Changshou and they are also open but only at half mast so to speak. Having mongered for 15 years all over Asia and some of Latin America, there is dramatically less English spoken on Mainland China in the P4P scene than elsewhere. Especially compared to Thailand, Cambodia, and naturally the Philippines and Singapore. That said, speaking not a word of English you can get what you are after, once you are on location, in everyplace from Pink BBSs to Saunas to the bars. Once in the bedroom, not much spoken communication is necessary, right?
The biggest hurdle for the non-Chinese speaker will be getting to where you want to go via taxi. Even in Beijing trying to get drivers to take me to well-known hotels was often difficult. I needed to have addresses written in Chinese (don't expect that you can get in the cab and say 'Weston Hotel' or 'Ritz Hotel') and hopefully with a map.
Obscure mongering spots like some of the saunas require lots of time and a business card. Or if you have the phone number, call the place and then hand the phone to the driver – he'll eventually work it out. Collect business cards.
I bought a couple of iPhone translations apps: 'Jibbigo' ($5, on sale from $25) and the $0. 99 'English to Chinese Book'. Both are totally worthless for anytime beyond very basic communication like 'where is the toilet' or 'take me to my hotel' Both of which are more quickly handled through gestures or handing the driver an address. I would think for mongering that the most helpful would be a basic audio dictionary – something that has lots of individual words spoken in Chinese. That way you can look up the word for 'Big' and then look up the word for 'Breasts' and get that point across. (or you could just make the two hand gesture for big tata's).
The other approach is to use Google Translate to print out a few phrases or sentences that you expect to use: e. G."I want a slim girl. 18-22 years old, who will do oral sex without condom. Regular sex with condom" Just don't let the paper fall out of your wallet when you are having dinner with your Chinese customer!
Conclusion – not speaking the local language is a bigger hassle China than elsewhere, but it is not a large barrier. The one issue is that you need to know how to communicate where you want to go to taxi drivers, they are more clueless than you might imagine. This is doubly true if you are looking for BBSs which may move around and are harder to find. So either have a Chinese speaker with you or allow (lots) of extra time. For this reason and because I was especially interested in BBSs I hired a local guide for Shanghai. (See posts from April / May of 2011 for details)

The place I found is on the south west corner of Shanxi Lu and Changping Lu and has a large Massage sign up, you can't miss it. Just came back from SH so here is my little update:

He does not speak Chinese, and the police did not provide him with an interpreter or attempted to explain the situation like how long will he be detained or will there be any judicial procedures, etc.
The cops or guards basically just let him rot in his cell for two days, finally the fear of the unknown broke him down and he almost went crazy on the third day and he kept doing stuff to get the guard's attention and kept gesturing he would pay lots of money.
Then an English speaking cop appeared and negotiated his release for money. They settled at 60, 000 RMB for his immediate release and to wipe off all arrest records. He probably could have got out with a lower price if he didn't mind the arrest records.
Unfortunately he was not able to explain away his 3 days disappearance (If I was in his shoes, I'll probably just tell the employer I got kidnapped which is actually pretty true in nature) , so he still got fired and had to leave China. But at least he could come back if he gets employed by another company.

I don't need to use the search because I've been reading the forum regularly for the past 3 years or so and I can't remember any reports from anyone who took a service provider home and was followed by police and got caught, or any similar stories. There are horror stories from this area of guys getting ripped off for $100's (sometimes much more) in these places. Follow Mike's advise, ask the concierge for help to Bodi or Sacrosa. I would add SiYuan (3rd floor of the Merry Lin Hotel) on Zhang Yang Lu across from the Intercontinental Hotel. SiYuan may be the easiest to find of the three. I'd recommend Heting. It's the quintessential Shanghai 1930's experience I think. Classy design, extremely well trained and well behaved girls, feels like an upmarket opium den inside and sometimes they even play some classical Chinese music in the room. I am preparing my first visit to China (next month). My company booked me at the Swisshotel. Shanghai. I could not find any information related to this place in this forum. Does anybody know if it is allowed to bring girls in the room? Are there action nearby?

The best chance to find what you are looking for are two phil, thai or viet girls from Manhattan Club. HI am a fan of the JC. It is nice and close to Manhattan, Judy's etc etc if you are looking to explore those take-out options. standard fs price for shanghai is 150. it's been 150 for ages. good customer discount might drop that to 130. which isn't to say you won't get action for 100 but that is hardly the normal case. usually you'll be way out someplace a laowai, let alone a mongering one, stands out like a turban in the vatican. or you'll be enjoying the company of a woman old enough to be the mother of the type you'd rather hire.
the central rail station hasn't been a place to find action since 2010 or so. years ago there used to be loads of working girl-huts in the urban core. there might still be lone holdouts inside the inner ring but i wouldn't count on it. these days you'll need to get out past the 2nd ring before you start seeing clusters of them. over the years all the ones in my neighborhood that closed down were shuttered due to rising property costs or general development and not due to direct police action. there comes a point where general overhead means you can't get away with charging 150. and you want to charge much more than 200 per punter you start getting into the mini-sauna* price range, where you get a private room with a shower for only a bit more than a "high end" whack shack (they do exist!).
there was a proper map done by a guy who spent nearly 2 years covering pretty much all of shanghai with a hand-held gps mapper trying get a definitive bbs count, from jinshan to jiading, from the pacific to the border with jiangsu. someone posted a partial list of his work a few years back. i've seen the complete map but never had access to the raw data behind it.
anyhow- long story short you can still find minibrothels in shanghai. but you want affordable sex? look for places with cheap storefront space. that is going to exclude anywhere that doesn't require a taxi to reach / or is a good walk from any metro station these days. the northeastern corner of shui qing road and li'an road, just west of the s20 is an example. the closest i've been there is in my car while stopped at the intersection, perhaps another member can make the drive out there to report on the service and pricing.

Wrong convention center. Johnny Rocket is staying near the Puxi (old) exhibition center, not the new one on FangDian Road, Pudong.

The police in China don't have to worry about things like search warrants, concern for your legal rights, or anything beyond hoping they don't pinch someone with guanxi. No matter where you monger have your passport on you (legally you are supposed to anyway) and if you appear to be suitably apologetic the chance of you being sent on your way so they don't have to hassle with bringing in a foreign affairs cop skyrocket.
A general mistake people make is confusing feeling Safe with being Safe. I don't think they can accuse you of anything. Most of the MPs will flash the lights if the LEs show up, thus giving time to cover up if anything is going on. In the years I have been in SH, I have never been in a raid. If a raid is likely, the shops know and will keep it straight up (no pun intended) to avoid a problem, or offer take away.
As for the saunas, most are well connected. I have arrived at the Pudong places and been told "Sorry, LE is lurking. We are not taking customers tonight". The operators are concerned about a raid and loosing customers, so they are careful. Personally, I have no reluctance at either place.

There is also a place directly across the streetfrom the sheraton next to the high end shopping plaza. There are two massage places. The one on the 2nd floor is legit. The one on the first floor does a 200rmb HE but the girls are better looking at the other place on gubei lu.

European Banksters are too busy dealing with the pros working whatever remains of Tongren road. They are playing in a league that doesn't even recognize the existence of barbershops.
Standard FS price for Shanghai is 150. It's been 150 for ages. Good customer discount might drop that to 130. Which isn't to say you won't get action for 100 but that is hardly the normal case. Usually you'll be WAY out someplace a laowai, let alone a mongering one, stands out like a turban in The Vatican. Or you'll be enjoying the company of a woman old enough to be the mother of the type you'd rather hire.
The central rail station hasn't been a place to find action since 2010 or so. Years ago there used to be loads of working girl-huts in the urban core. There might still be lone holdouts inside the inner ring but I wouldn't count on it. These days you'll need to get out past the 2nd ring before you start seeing clusters of them. Over the years all the ones in my neighborhood that closed down were shuttered due to rising property costs or general development and not due to direct police action. There comes a point where general overhead means you can't get away with charging 150. And you want to charge much more than 200 per punter you start getting into the mini-sauna* price range, where you get a private room with a shower for only a bit more than a "high end" whack shack (they do exist!).
There was a proper map done by a guy who spent nearly 2 years covering pretty much ALL of Shanghai with a hand-held GPS mapper trying get a definitive BBS count, from Jinshan to Jiading, from the Pacific to the border with Jiangsu. Someone posted a partial list of his work a few years back. I've seen the complete map but never had access to the raw data behind it.
Anyhow- long story short you can still find minibrothels in Shanghai. But you want affordable sex? Look for places with cheap storefront space. That is going to exclude anywhere that doesn't require a taxi to reach / or is a good walk from any metro station these days. The northeastern corner of Shui Qing road and Li'an road, just west of the S20 is an example. The closest I've been there is in my car while stopped at the intersection, perhaps another member can make the drive out there to report on the service and pricing.
*Mini-sauna = establishment without the fishbowl. Just a hallway lineup, small collection of decently decorated rooms with private showers, expect to pay 300-400. Yeah, I assumed that I would have to venture outward if I wanted to find the true hair-salon streets like they have out in the provinces. While going for a walk the other day, I did stumble upon a literal hole-in-the-wall way out on the far end of Line 1. It was most unusual, as it was along the entrance of a perfectly ordinary, respectable middle-class apartment community. Was around Jiashan Market, and I seemed to recall someone had posted a while back about a HE massage nearby. Was taking a stroll through a demolition site of old-style tenements; the plot was in complete ruins but some of the structures were still standing and it was obvious a few hold-out tenants continued to reside there. Also on Shangcheng Lu near PuCheng Lu, there are a few next to the polic station. Tang Dynasty, Massage club, etc. All straight up places. They are similar to, but not exactly like the south China places. Seems the Guangdong-ese like their foot rubs.

Go to any Congen or Kang Dao Massage. Ask for the 5 star menu versus 7 star and a 1 hour foot or body massage is about $88 rmb. The girls are young and they give a great legit massage.

Try golden resort (north east corner of shanxi bei lu, wuding lu) or another one in the north east of yanping lu with xinzha lu (this one cost 78 or so). As far as I know they are 100% legit and last 2-3 times I got a very young girl.
Do not try anything in Dagu lu or the French concession. Overprice massages for careless laowais.

Was in Gubei and walked across "Bi Li Hu Sauna" on the corner of Hongbaoshi and Jinzhi (which is one street east and parallel of Gubei Road.). Was quoted 700 for dry service; 880 for soapie; and 600 (I think) for daytime discount (1-7). Didn't try because I was busy, but wondering if anyone else has.
Location is great. Right in the middle of all those office high-rises. Can take MTR Line 10 to Yili Road, walk west for half block to Jinzhi Road, turn left, and walk 2 minutes until the end of the street. Sauna is next to a 7-11 and Subway.

I found two Zapata's: one near the Hilton and another farther away on Hengshen Lu. Can someone tell me which one is better and what is it like on a Friday or Saturday night? Are there a lot of WG, or is it more of a local crowd.

ALThe one in Henshan lu. Long time ago was full of WG and one day the put the sign you see attached. Not sure about the current status.

She upsells me to a gel massage for 258RMB. Didi is doing the talking at this point. She keeps saying Shoofu, shoofu. I like shoofu so what the hell. I figure I am getting a happy ending anyway. The gel was a let down. It was a cone thing that was (I think) supposed to simulate a tongue. I got a quick rub down, the gel thing all over my body, then up my ass. It was definately not my thing. The KTV at the Everbright has around 300 or so girls and is one of the "raunchy" types. The girls wear flimsy "uniforms" which are basically a wraparound skirt and a very loose blouse. They will not wear a bra underneath. During the night at the KTV you basically play drinking games, sing, and do some fondling / making out. At least once during the evening, the girls do a rotation strip dance. This means the tops come off (and for some girls the bottoms too) and they do a lap dance. After a few minutes, the girl goes to the next guy and gives him a lap dance. This continues until your original girl comes back to you. The cost at KTV will generally be about 1100 a person (including room, alcohol, and all tips). Take out is an additional 1000 for 1 time and 1500 for all night. If you want the dance make sure you ask the mommy. Also if you intend on doing take out then talk to the mommy beforehand as well since not all of the girls will go back with a customer.
In general the more expensive the venue and the more likely there are to be expats, women, and children present the less likely you are to be hassled. The police in China don't have to worry about things like search warrants, concern for your legal rights, or anything beyond hoping they don't pinch someone with guanxi. No matter where you monger have your passport on you (legally you are supposed to anyway) and if you appear to be suitably apologetic the chance of you being sent on your way so they don't have to hassle with bringing in a foreign affairs cop skyrocket.
A general mistake people make is confusing feeling Safe with being Safe. Feeling safe in a private hotel room didn't protect these people from a police raid with a local news station invited along to video the event:

I am from Los Angeles & last year I had the opportunity to visit Beijing and from recommendations on this site, signed up on thebeijinger website and posted an ad looking for some fun company.
