I've been in Shanghai for a few days now and I was wondering if anyone knows a massage parlor in Shanghai that looks like "Akane Massage" in Bangkok?

Yes, I did my 'RTFF' and prepared a list of places to check out during my stay.

First stop was the Siyuan Spa on the 3rd floor of the MerryLin hotel (across from the InterContinental Hotel). Asked about the price at the front desk first and was told 880 yuan all-inclusive. That was more than I expected and since I only had 800 yuan (plus some dollars) in my wallet, I left. I went down to the Cashier's Desk on the 1st floor of the hotel to change my money, but they refused since I wasn't a registered guest at the hotel.

So, I decided to check out the neighborhood for something cheaper. Walked down the street on the side of the MerryLin Hotel, walked past the Captain Hostel and a nice-looking bakery, then I turned down an alley that had a barbershop pole lit up down the alley. A few minutes later an attractive, slender 21-year-old girl walked in, fully clothed in black jeans and a long-sleeved black sweater with a high neckline, carrying only a bottle of baby oil. She seemed startled to see me naked and immediately told me that she did not offer extra services, that she would massage my front and back above the waist, plus my legs, but not the crotch area. I did RTFF and it is not clear what the answer is – here's hoping that one of you will help out a long-time senior member of ISG (who normally posts on the Indonesia board).

I was walking on Nanjing Lu around 6 pm last Monday evening, from the Peoples Square down to the Bund and the riverfront, when a 45-ish plain-dressed Chinese woman came up to me, grabbed my left arm and asked 'You want massage? I bring you to place, many girls. ' I know that it's not a good idea to follow these touts, and I wasn't necessarily looking to get laid that evening, but I was intrigued by this lady, plus I was already walking in that direction, so I decided to humor her and see what might happen.

1) We walked east to the buildings in the mid-600s, turned north (left) up a side street, then east (right) on the first proper street. Walked down a block and there were two large doors painted blue, with no windows. We walked into the restaurant, made a left and walked up a spiral metal staircase to the second floor where there was a bar / brothel. This bar also had a mamasan in her late 30s, and the scene was similar – into a small side room, a line-up appeared, this time with only two girls, and the same pricing structure. I didn't like either girl, so I got up and left.

3) Once again my guide followed me and said no problem, next place is better, many girls. We crossed Nanjing Lu and took a turn to the right down half a block, walked into an office building and took the elevator to the top floor (12th?). This time the place was a deserted karaoke bar. Once again, into a small room, this time the line-up was only one girl who was nothing special. I asked about the price, was told the same 100/300 scenario. I then asked if there were any additional fees since we were in a karaoke bar and was told that there was a 100 yuan room fee plus drinks. Having visions of receiving a US $1, 000 karaoke bill, I said forget it and left.

4) Returned downstairs and said 'no more' to the guide, pointing out that each place had less girls than the one before. I finally was able to shake her off, walked about 50 meters, when two 45-ish plainly-dressed women came up to me 'you want massage. ' I burst out laughing but they insisted they knew another place nearby, so I said ok.

This time, the place was located in one of the largest department stores on the street, with the initials MB. I was puzzled that the two ladies were bringing me into a department store, but once we walked into the front entrance, the ladies led me to the left, to a bank of elevators hidden in a corner. Went up to the 7th floor, where there was a clearly 'local' Chinese food court, with over 100 customers, men, women, children, but no foreigners. The two ladies led me to the rear of the food court, past the toilets, then down a couple of turns down a dimly-lighted hallway to – another brothel! This time I was led into a small room, and a beautiful girl who spoke English was led in, then the two of us were left alone.

This time, I was definitely interested, but I first wanted to make sure the price structure. The girl said '100 for massage. 100 for Hand Job. 300 for full sex, everything. Here's my dilemma: assuming that I should avoid the girly bars, my choices seem to be between getting a 258-yuan HJ from a fully-clothed girl or spending 880 yuan to visit Siyuan, Hailang, Heting and other high-end spas. Surely there must be an option in between price-wise?

The point of this post is that I visited several 'girly bars' and my overall question is: setting aside the karaoke place in #3 below, are these places legit.

1) We walked east to the buildings in the mid-600s, turned north (left) up a side street, then east (right) on the first proper street. Walked down a block and there were two large doors painted blue, with no windows. The woman led me inside to a regular bar, with several booths, and 4 scantily-clad girls in their early 20s sitting in the center booth.

2) My 'guide'. Led me further east, then down an alley to a local run-down restaurant a half-block north of Nanjing Lu, visible from that street in the mid-500s area. We walked into the restaurant, made a left and walked up a spiral metal staircase to the second floor where there was a bar / brothel. This bar also had a mamasan in her late 30s, and the scene was similar – into a small side room, a line-up appeared, this time with only two girls, and the same pricing structure. I didn't like either girl, so I got up and left.

3) We crossed Nanjing Lu and took a turn to the right down half a block, walked into an office building and took the elevator to the top floor (12th?). This time the place was a deserted karaoke bar.

4) This time, the place was located in one of the largest department stores on the street, with the initials MB. I was puzzled that the two ladies were bringing me into a department store, but once we walked into the front entrance, the ladies led me to the left, to a bank of elevators hidden in a corner. Went up to the 7th floor, where there was a clearly 'local' Chinese food court, with over 100 customers, men, women, children, but no foreigners. The two ladies led me to the rear of the food court, past the toilets, then down a couple of turns down a dimly-lighted hallway to – another brothel! This time I was led into a small room, and a beautiful girl who spoke English was led in, then the two of us were left alone.

5) Finally made it to the Bund around 7:15 pm I walked up the stairs to the promenade and an innocent-looking 20-year-old female who was standing with a girlfriend said 'Hello. '.I wasn't sure how much information to give in my e-mail last week about the four 'girly bar' places that I visited. Here are the addresses (all on/near the pedestrian-only part of Nanjing Lu):

1) The street-level bar with two windowless doors is located between 415 and 423 Tianjin Road, just east of Zhejiang Road North. Tianjin Road is parallel to and one block to the north of Nanjing Lu. This bar has a sign that says 'BEER COFFEE' above the door, plus some Chinese characters.

I walked into this place around 6 pm and found the same late 30-ish attractive mamasan and the same girls who were on duty last week.

2) The brothel that is located above a restaurant is located in the "Tianhuitian Restaurant." This place is located in a side alley just off of Nanjing Lu to the north, between #500 and #508 and a 'Tianhuitian Restaurant' sign in English is easily visible from Nanjing Lu.

Interestingly, as I stood on Nanjing Lu getting ready to write down this information on a piece of paper, a 35-ish Chinese woman walked up to me, said 'let's go' grabbed my left elbow and tried to walk down the alley with me. A 50-ish white man who had been standing at the corner yelled out to me in English 'don't go there, it's a tourist trap! ' I shook off the girl and walked up to the guy and asked, what kind of trap? He replied, it's a trap because once you get into the place, you'll be charged a lot of extra money, maybe over a thousand yuan for drinks, room charges, etc. I thanked him and left.

3) Diagonally across Nanjing Lu from this tiny alley is a wider pedestrian walkway that's only around 50 meters long. The landmark is that the building on the left hand side is 497 Nanjing Lu. If you walk down to the end of this walkway, on the left at the end is a non-descript 13 story building, with a 'Star Hairdo' shop on the ground floor, and a bank of elevators to the left of the shop. The karaoke place is located on the 12th (or 13th) floor here. I also learned that there's a place on the 8th floor of this building named 'Brazilian Coffee' that looks like a girly bar, with some girls on duty, plus apparently some of the female streetwalkers bring their customers here to use the private rooms here.

On the 5th floor of 497 Nanjing Lu is a legitimate massage place, that offers foot massages, back massages in the open, etc. Not sure if any additional services are available here.

4) The major department store that has a brothel / girly bar on its 7th floor (behind the food court) is Meters Bonwe.

Also, if you walk east from Meters Bonwe, just before the entrance to the Metro subway on the north side, there's some restaurants, with a 'UBC Coffee' shop on the third floor. In addition to the usual tables, customers can also sit in one of three little rooms off to the side that have sliding doors that close; evidently, girls can bring their male customers to the UBC Coffee shop, go into one of the rooms, order overpriced tea / coffee / juice, then slide the door closed and get to work. Not sure if there's room charge here as I didn't partake.

5) I never made it back to the Bund, so I don't know where the location of the last place is.

Summary: Take the advice of posters here such as Bionicman and Changlelu, and the gentleman standing outside the Tianhuitian Restaurant, and avoid these places. Better to go to one of the high-end places, a BBS or one of the other established massage places.

I've been successful on Nanjing Road (east) a few times looking takeout. On the weekends there are usually a few freelancers working. They usually won't approach laowai's so you will need to put on the charm and make first contact. Stay away from the "let's go have a drink" scam girls. When they ask me, I say, no I would rather go back to your place and boink, none have taken me up on the offer. One time, I had a girl ask me if I wanted to visit a girly bar, after several "only look, only look" and me declining. he turned pale, keeping a cool head and experienced the entries on the other side ordered that staff called the police, after 10 min the police was not there, so i took the phone and dialed 110 (emergency phone in china). she pulled off the phone of me and said they do not want problems and price "fell" in 3500 yuan or 550usd. going forward i tried to call the police, but she took the phone of me againolice claiming that it was not me i ordered drinks (according to the truth, because it turned out that whiskey 30ml costs about $ 75, but the lady grabbed the phone again.

after the great fairs, not wanting to wait any longer (because the science of this and so have some flow) agreed to pay $ 300 just for food.

any way it cost me 300 usd.

now is a little easier for me because i share with u. as "old" and experienced peasant allowed himself to be done as a 6-year-old.

so beware that gentlemen. not only touts the pubs / clubs / bars are "dangerous, but also a nice walking girls that will catch you on the street.

I cared a lot to make sure, restaurant is decided by myself to avoid any "connection" between the restaurant and her. I avoid to order any special drinks, only water and juice, after we finished, the bill was around 1800 RMB. (Normal price in this restaurant should be not more than around 150 to 200 for what we got. I went there again with a Chinese friend later to check the menue prices). Seems even the girl did not know the stuff there, she find a way to deal with them to scam the "stupid tourist". So hope our experience will help others to act more "clever" than we did.

Good thinking on your part, but realize, these girls are professionals. Any restaurant, any where near Nanjing road, without Chinese language skills, you have no chance. She just had to mention splitting the take with the waiter (ess) , and you are done. At least you only dropped 1800 rmb. The cost of two good sauna sessions.

Visitors, be warned. If you want to lose your cash, go with the touts and cute "students" on Nanjing Road, the Bund and other tourist spots. If you want real return on investment, RTFF to find reputable P4P places.

Numerous reviews, prices, top picks for ladies. A wealth of information all at your fingertips. Expect to pay between 700 to 880 RMB for about an hour or 1. 5 hours.

As for Xintaindi, I would steer clear of any of the WG in that area, way to high priced and you will get ripped off.

In Jiashan Road, go north about 80 meters. On the left side, the big place.I tried this place out the other day. The building is not marked at all so it may be hard to find. It is a big square building. The address plate on it says "1", not "258". You need to walk north of Jianguo Road on Jiashan. It is across the street from some high-rise construction. You can tell you're at the right place because there will be at least one Chinese dude hanging around out front for no apparent reason.

This place is at least 4 floors. The first floor is the sauna area but it is closed with the lights shut off. You get taken up to a relaxation room and then a mommy will bring you to the fishbowl. I selected a 20 why. O from Anhui who was very pretty, almost like a Chinese / caucasian mix. Nice ass, pencil eraser nipples but she had "A" tits which turned out to be implants. Yes,"Then why get implants?" question crossed my mind too. She had also trimmed her Bush, which is a rarity in China.

Upstairs the private room is very large, at least double the size of the ones in Merrylin. We both stripped in the room so no robes necessary or provided. Visited Animate massage parlor in Puxi recently. Never been reported here, so I thought I would check it out. It is licated near the Shanghai hotel at 425 Wulumuqi Road (N). They listed oil massages at 180 and 380. I was hopeful the 380 would be more than your average oil massage. The easiest way may be to take the metro to Shanghai indoor stadium via Metro Line 1, then follow the signs to the exit for Zhong Shan Xi Lu (I think it's either Exit A or Exit 1).

Once you reach street level, walk straight and bear to the right onto Zhong Shan Xi Lu. Flag down a taxi and ask them to bring you to 1277. I suppose you could walk, but it's a long walk, and the taxi only cost 14 yuan. Note: you'll reach street level at the 2600 block, and once you reach the 1500 block, the numbers seem to drop quickly, so make sure your cab is in the right-hand lane after 1500.

As you face the 1277 building, you will notice a large, wide driveway to the right of the building, which leads to a parking lot. Walk down the driveway and turn left into a narrower alley, walk 20m and you will hit the entrance on the right. All signs were Chinese-only, so print the business card!

As mentioned in my previous post, from RTFF I decided to choose Hailang Sauna as my one high-priced spa visit. I chose Hailang based on the excellent reviews and also because I wanted to experience the 'red rope' and Hailang is one of the few places that still offers that service.

My visit was very similar to the other posts written about this place. When I arrived at the front desk, a man wearing a suit who spoke excellent English greeted me and asked me if I wanted a massage. I said yes and that I wanted the 'red rope', he made a twirling motion with his hand and said 'yes. ' I changed out of my clothes in the locker room into cotton shorts and robe, then my stuff was put into the locker and the door double-locked, with my keeping one of the keys that was on a bracelet. I locked everything into the locker, including my wallet, cell phone, etc.

Note: For my next visit, I'll be bringing my own condoms, so I will put those in the robe pocket, but that's it.

The locker room attendant asked if I wanted to take a shower but I said no, I'll shower in the room with the girl. I was escorted upstairs and sat in a waiting room for 10 minutes, drinking water and watching TV. Then I was led to the fishbowl, which is a one-way window (you can see the girls, they can't see you). At least 25 girls lined up. Would I return? Yes, definitely.

Would I pick #913 again? Yes, if I'm able to return in the next few months, when she's likely to still remember me (IMHO, second time visits are always better than first-time visits with any girl at any spa anywhere in the world).

Would I try a two-girl session? Not sure, as the price is fairly high in comparison with a BBS or a Jakarta spa, and my session with #913 was fine as is.

Thanks for all the great info on the forums. On a trip to Shanghai currently and did my fair share of work reading the forums to figure out various places to check out. I just got back from Shanghai. I checked in on the 24 hours massage on Beijing road between 1500-1800. Price was $208 but the talent was pretty gruesome. Back in January, after I RTFF, I posted a few questions to this board, and I want to give a sincere thank-you to those who replied to me. Due to limited time in Shanghai, I knew that I would only have a chance to visit 2 or 3 places. Below is a brief description of where I went.

Based on one reply that told me that perhaps the easiest place to find that offered soapy massages was probably Si Yuan, I decided to go there first. (For a non-Chinese speaking foreigner, easy to find is a big plus)

Si Yuan is on the 3rd floor of the Merry Lin Hotel, on 818 Zhang Yang Lu across from Intercontinental Hotel. It is walking distance from Century Ave Station (metro lines 2, 4.6, 9 all go to Century Ave Station). The line-up had several very attractive girls, and they offer soapy massage. The girl I chose did not speak English (and for some reason she repeatedly tried speaking to me in Chinese even though it was obvious I did not understand Chinese). Despite the language barrier, it was still quite an enjoyable session (It was my first-ever soapy massage). Unfortunately, I did not think to remember the girl's number. You'll See the Next Age Shopping center. You have to walk into the courtyard sort of place. As repeated many times the entrance between the UBC Coffee and the Steak King. It's not marked. Just go through the doors and take the elevator to the 5th floor."

My understanding is that Sacrosa is cheaper than SiYuan, but does not include soapy.

Based on a positive review I saw, I went to Shanghai Hotel. I took the line 2 subway to the Jing'An temple stop, then walked to the hotel. The hotel is on Wulumuqui Street behind the Hilton. The spa is on the 2nd floor. Soapy massage did not appear to be available here. For some reason, I though I had read that it was. Although the session was still fairly good, I definitely prefer SiYuan due to the availability of soapy massage. Since the session at Shanghai Hotel cost about the same as SiYuan, I doubt that I would repeat at the Shanghai Hotel. In addition, I felt a bit awkward at the Shanghai Hotel sauna. First, you get naked and sit in a small pool. Next they lead you to an area where you get a massage from a old guy. (I DID NOT want this, and it took a while to get this point across since I don't speak Chinese). Then, they lead you to a steam room, and I was in there for longer than I wanted to be, but again had a hard time communicating this. Back in January, after I RTFF, I posted a few questions to this board, and I want to give a sincere thank-you to those who replied to me. Due to limited time in Shanghai, I knew that I would only have a chance to visit 2 or 3 places. Below is a brief description of where I went.

Based on one reply that told me that perhaps the easiest place to find that offered soapy massages was probably Si Yuan, I decided to go there first. (For a non-Chinese speaking foreigner, easy to find is a big plus)

Si Yuan is on the 3rd floor of the Merry Lin Hotel, on 818 Zhang Yang Lu across from Intercontinental Hotel. It is walking distance from Century Ave Station (metro lines 2, 4.6, 9 all go to Century Ave Station). The line-up had several very attractive girls, and they offer soapy massage. The girl I chose did not speak English (and for some reason she repeatedly tried speaking to me in Chinese even though it was obvious I did not understand Chinese). Despite the language barrier, it was still quite an enjoyable session (It was my first-ever soapy massage). Unfortunately, I did not think to remember the girl's number. Just go through the doors and take the elevator to the 5th floor."

My understanding is that Sacrosa is cheaper than SiYuan, but does not include soapy.

Based on a positive review I saw, I went to Shanghai Hotel. I took the line 2 subway to the Jing'An temple stop, then walked to the hotel. The hotel is on Wulumuqui Street behind the Hilton. The spa is on the 2nd floor. Soapy massage did not appear to be available here. For some reason, I though I had read that it was. Although the session was still fairly good, I definitely prefer SiYuan due to the availability of soapy massage. Since the session at Shanghai Hotel cost about the same as SiYuan, I doubt that I would repeat at the Shanghai Hotel. In addition, I felt a bit awkward at the Shanghai Hotel sauna. If I recall correctly, both places charged 800 RMB My memory could be slightly wrong, but if that price is not exactly correct, it is definitely pretty close.

Both places offered essentially identical services as well. Therefore, which one winds up better for you would be depend more on the individual girl that you choose than the place. Since I don't have any specific girl's number to recommend for you, I would say that whichever one is easier to get to for you is the one to go to. I read many pages on this thread, and I got the impression that overall, more posters gave a slight edge to Bodi. My opinion is you will get very similar (good) service at either place.

Last week I visited Spring Massage before going to sleep. Here is my short report about it:

Place name: Spring Massage.

Location: Cross of Maoming Lu and WeiHai Lu (entrance in maoming lu. There is a couple of stairs (down) and then you can take the elevator to the second floor)

1. My experience with short time hotels. 168 works for me. One of you has to get the room. The one who buys the room provides the I'd. You meet each other in elevator. Cells work fine here. Sometimes the elevator will not go up without the room card. About 100 to 140 rmb. Depends on the hotel. Plus a security deposit. They will check the room before the security deposit is refunded. Go figure. If you used a condom or some of the other available resources they will be deducted from the deposit. If you stained the sheets they will charge you a cleaning fee. It's just business.

2. On what you guys call raids, more like a check up. Who knows what the real reason is. This is China. I have been in the room with the girl twice when something like this happens. The lights blink on and off. The girls are prepared. You get dressed in what they gave you when you entered the establishment. They lead you to the wait room. Some guys have a smoke, others drink tea or whatever. 15 to 20 minutes later the girl or one of the guys take you back to the room. Be cool with it. The third time I had called the girl.
