I'm back in Shanghai after about a one-year absence. Since things change so rapidly in China with the LE crackdown and temporary closings, can someone give me address to some good, clean HJ massage places that charge no more than 500 RMB? I prefer places that are not frequented by foreigners.

It doesn't have anything indicating that it is a sauna, at least in English. But, given your recommendation, I went into the door and up to the 3rd floor. Doesn't appear to have anyone who speaks English, but they showed me to a room with lockers, and I took off my clothes and put on a robe. I sat there for awhile, and finally had to open the door and flag someone down. They took me to a line up, about 12 to 15 girls, pretty good selection. I chose one, and she looked surprised. A few days back I decided to check out the Shanghai sauna scene for the first time. My destination was a hotel near an exhibition center. I choose this venue as it is easier and less embarrassing to seek directions to a hotel. As earlier reported the hotel was on a lonely spot and did not seem to be much patronized. After some searching around located the sauna that was not within the hotel, but with a separate entrance.
I was promptly led to a room for changing, without any discussions about charges. English was very limited. After donning the robes, I was led inside to an open area, where only one girl was standing. Now, this was a disappointment as I was expecting a fishbowl. Because I can read Chinese (but can't speak it well at all), I looked at saunas catered to the locals in the Chinese web sites. There is this place just opened up in one of the northern districts and it advertised a special opening price. I was more attracted by the photos of the girls there. I contacted them and they sent more pictures. I arranged to go there to try the place out. I double-checked before I went and they said indeed there is an opening special.
It was quite far from downtown. The place was well decorated enough, but the selections were few (only 5 or 6 girls) , and they did not look anything like the ones in the pictures.
I picked one. She was not the greatest looking, but looked better than the rest. I chose the cheaper dry rub. The girl did give very good service.
When I went out to pay, I was hit with a bill more than enough to get a Nuru massage in a fairly upscale place. I asked why it was so much higher than what I was promised, they said the special only applies to a couple of girls and they were with guests (even though I was the first one to show up when the place opened) and I picked the "A" girl. I pointed out the ad said one price, and half the girls there were not wearing numbers. The one I was with was not wearing a high serial"9" or a special number, and I was not told who were A girls or be girls. The old "I don't understand your mandarin" ruse was then used. I paid the bill and left, never to go back. The girl gave good service, but would not be anywhere near any "A" girl in an upscale place. I resent the plave using phony pictures and was dishonest in more ways than one. I learned the lesson of not going to places that cater only to the locals. They will rip you off if they see you are not from here.

This happened to me in a Suzhou at a legit massage place that had a published "special" I handed them 200 expecting 50 in change. Instead they demanded 50 more. And causing a scene until the issue is resolved is a very bad idea and fraught with danger, particularly if the establishment is not well-known to you! If you know the head of local LE, then maybe you could try this.
There is always the risk of being ripped off. Minimise the risk by sticking to known and recommended places and confirm pricing before accepting any service or goods. If you want to adventure out and explore unknown places, then accept the increased risk.
Remember this does not happen to everyone all the time, otherwise these pages would be full of complaints about KTVs, saunas, MPs and whatever. There are, of course, a few paranoid posters repeatedly sermonising on these pages.

So, went to the massage place on Shanxi bei Lu Chang Ping Lu (not the Buddha one) and saw #18. She has been reported on a few times here and generally gives good service.

There is a scene of "QQ-Girls", which you meet on QQ chat program, they are available mostly only for incall, working in private appartments and charge 300 to 400 for a short time and around 800 for overnight (but only from locals, mostly they charge westerners much higher or even not serve them. Here be carefull, because first pictures are mostly not real or photoshoped in a way, that the real girl will look much less attractive! Second this places are the most highly risk entertainment venues you can go to from the view of beeing catched by police. They are not "protected" by the police, because they don't pay for that, second they are not welcomed by the neighborhood, who often call the police to get the "naughty" business out of their area, so not really a good choice from my view.
If you met the girls on wechat, than mostly the pictures or profiles also fake, but a better chance to get an attractive girl. If they will be faced to a foreigner greenhorn, they will try to charge as much as possible (some guys pay 5000 and more for overnight and girls all the time hope to meet a "goldmine" like that), but realistic should be around 800 to 1500 for a "one shoot" experience and 1000 to 2000 for an overnight stay. That really depends, how good she look like, if she speak english or not and so on.

Steven.I've found rare exceptions to those guidelines. One time I asked a BBS girl to come back to my apartment because they were about to close and my apartment is a lot better environment. She agreed for a long time rate, then decided her friend should come along too. Seems like tons of places are gone, I dropped by this place last night. It's close to the corner of Jiangsu and Dongzhuanbang road, on Dongzhuanbang on the south side. It's hard to miss as it's the only sleazy looking place on this road. Says massage in English on the sign. At 10 pm about 3 7/10 in the lineup. Damage was 300 for 60 minute massage with HJ. Performance was 6/10 but if you live int he area it's worth it.

The furnishings were a bit dated, but it seemed clean enough and the prices and selection were comparable to my favorite (Dongsen).
However, my friend who has never been to a sauna like this before got a case of gonorrhea from the BBBJ! This obviously hit pretty close to home for me as we stood right next to each other picking out our girls. Just curious how common of an event this is in the hobby? Just now opened another interesting Sauna in the Ming Hui area near the Tang Dynasty Sauna. The new place is called Jiang Li, totally new facilities and around 60 to 80 girls every day in different price ranges, from 800 RMB for 90 minutes (including Nuru) up to 1700 for the stunning top models (also for the models no restriction for price or number of shoots). But fair enough, there 800 RMB girls normally the majority, so that's not a "honeypot-rate" like in some other sauna clubs.

Reading the linked article, the three men were arrested on December 1 of last year and were fined and sentenced to jail this week.
It sounded like a really fast bust. The place was in operation from November 10 and was raided on December 1. Was it because it operated out of an apartment buildeing and upset other residents whoiustomers then called the police?
They certainly sounded like keystone pimps. On top of being fined and jailed, they must have lost bundles in rent and setting up the place. Charging 238 rmb for full service in JingAn? They got 88 rmb per John after paying the girls. They had 300 customers in 20 day of operation, and had a net of 26400 rmb.
Maybe the risk of running afoul with LE ishigher with amateurish rinky dink operations, and lower with established and connected joints.

I don't know how popular this is here but in case anyone is interested there a lot of Chinese girls on livejasmin.com. Found out some are like 5 subway stations away from downtown Shanghai. Might be able to parlay webcam action into real life.

Areas of Jingan, Minhang, yYngpu have been reportedly raided. It apparently seems to be isolated sweeps within certain areas and not a sweep of the whole city but caution is still advised. Alerts are on mid level within the Chinese mongering community. BBS's and MP's have been closed for the past couple of days. However, most joints remain open.
The place next to the Buddha is closed but the BBS in the area is still open. I can only assume the sweeps have been to squeeze out the joints who haven't been donating to the local LE.

There is a rumor, that a (female) deputy major of Shanghai has been getting "advised" from another (female) colleague (working in Beijing for the government) to care a little bit more about the "prostitution business" in Shanghai, and from my personal view, as a female she has less understanding for that than kind of activities than her male colleagues (and seems she not get her share from all the "red envelopes" who will be handed out in this business), so now the police in town got orders to "fight against prostitution" more seriously.
And the effect is noticeable all over the city now. They even built a task force to fight against internet prostitution, so you can be sure more and more webpages will be closed next weeks, now many sauna clubs have to close on a short note, some are finally gave up their business already, just because to much pressure.
Last week the had the first serious accident related to that action. A sauna manager died after he jumped down from the building while the sauna has been raided. Now many guys (and girls) in that business not feel so comfortable any more.
The punishment for a sauna manager can be up to 12 years prison, and I am sure a prison in China is not as comfortable as in some western countries.
For the girls (and by the way also the customers) the risk is lower, should be around 10 day prison, so more easy to handle!
But I would advice to do your best to "solve" the problem on another way, because mostly the customer sentence will also include a visa cancellation, and how can you explain your company and family, that you have to leave China within 3 days and not allowed to come back for 3 to 5 years?
So over all, it's a good time to be more careful, and if we are unlucky, it's also time to say goodbye to a great open period in Shanghai!
But there is still hope, that the storm will pass by and the weather will getting better than.
This business also involves a lot of money and also the distribution of power in politics will change very quickly in China (and also Shanghai), so if we all are lucky, this lady will wake up one day in the near future and find herself responsible for the parks in the suburbs!

Stopped by Judy's on April 16th. Typical Judy's crowd. I think back in the day this was an LB hangout. I kinda remember it that way too. But the last couple of times I went there I didn't see so many. Well, what I saw this time was a lot of African girls. I was a bit drunk so I forget the country they all were from. Anyway, very aggressive ladies. Some were very hot if you like black girls as I do. But they seem way too dangerous for me. In fact, I saw a guy that was way too drunk. I didn't take out any; I wasnt into it this trip. But my two colleagues each took one. They paid much more and wouldn't tell me how much.
My opinion on the Big Apple is that it is a top notch place for this game. I put it up with anything I have been to in BKK or AC. Almost all the girls are Viet and speak decent English. And are all 7's,8's and 9's. Much prettier than AC and on a par with BKK. At least a 9 PM, I think the average talent was better than most bars in BKK without the overall seediness you get in BKK. I just find BKK and AC to me emotionally draining.
I did stop by Judy's that night as well and the talent compared to Manhattan was very very poor. As of right now, I recommend Big Apple and would stay away from Judy's. I will say I didn't see one African on Saturday night. Just lower quality girls. If you are going to spend in that 1200-2000 RMB range, go to Manhattan and at least get some quality.

Anyone wise to this?The Xin Yuan Sauna is located in the XuHui District, not far away from the stadium (zhong shan nan er lu 1800 hao), it's an old sauna (I have been there 8 years ago and that time it was not even new any more, so the environment is not really "western styled" and new.
But really no need to go there, because "Cosplay" is available in many saunas here. Easy to check: if they have theme rooms, they also offer cosplay, because why you would need an office room, if you don't play "office games"?
For example the "Red House (or Re Hai)" sauna has a class room, hospital room, a "bus-room", also office. Tang Dynasty and Ming Hui Sauna both have very nice office rooms (with big table, sofa and "boss-chair" One of my customers "played in Tang Dynasty with two secretaries last year. They also have rooms in the design of Metro, even "bird-caves" (seems Japanese or Chinese guys like that), also hospital and classrooms.
So the point is not to find a sauna which will offer cosplay service and will provide girls and costumes for that, the big point is, no sauna will provide girls for an English role play. For Chinese it works like that. They do a "briefing" (the sauna has different scenarios prepared, for example a job interview, two secretaries who fight for a better position and so on. The customer will select and the girls will try their best to "play" the role (don't expect too much, but it can be funny / exiting).
But you can imagine, that the "office game" is much more boring, when you don't understand that the second girl start to blow you, because she also want to get the job!
There is a sauna called "Hui Quan", which is also "specialized" on theme rooms, but also here no one of the girls will speak English for your "role play".
So if you speak Chinese, I would recommend Ming Hui or Tang Dynasty for a very funny Cosplay session.
If not, you still can try (not more expensive than normal rooms), but than you will just get the girl dressed different, but not the experience of a real "Cosplay" scenery.

The taxi fare calculator link when you do a yahoo search said the start tariff is 14 rmb, and then 3 rmb per km. But I think it is slightly higher, more like 3.7 rmb per km, and it may cost more after midnight (4.7 rmb per km). I saw those rates posted at the airport.

If you catch at cab at your hotel, that type of cab ride will be 30-50 RMB. The only time I have gotten ripped off by cabbies is getting a cab. At the Pudong station for the MagLev. There they have cabbies that are there to rip off the non-Chinese customer and you get the $200-$500 RMB price for something that should be $30-$50 since they expect you are new in country and if you new any better you would be taking the subway that is right across the street from the MagLev station.

I did it.
I checked places like: Lotus Sauna. Dong Jing Wan 968 - Jingyue Sauna Club. Han Sha Health. Dragonfly - Cypress Hotel Club and also if there is a good spa at Ritz-Carlton Pudong.
But I had no luck.

The venues and marketing may change, but the supply and demand remain the same. When I was back in Shanghai six months ago, it was no trouble at all. Visited 1066 Caobao Road recently. It is a sauna near Hongmei Road. Easy to find, from the big 1066 on the outside. Soon, there will be a metro stop in front. The doorman lets you in. I was just in Jingan and tried out the MP on Beijing Lu. Usually there is a good selection of girls there. However, even when I asked to see several, then only had one available, who was cute enough. She was No 6. She.

Ask someone from another culture about your native tongue. You might be surprised. I find Suzhou Dialect a bit softer than Shanghai Hua. Guttural is in the ear of the beholder. Some Chinese I meet say Gernman is easier to learn than English. My study of German certainly helped in learning Chinese. There seems to be a lot of interest in this place recently, and I've made it far enough in my to-do list to finally get there. I arranged access via Keke, however turned out she wasn't there when I arrived (before 6 pm on Thursday). They seemed fairly surprised to see a laowei, but the early hour may have also been a factor.
This is by far the nicest sauna I've been to. It's clearly brand new and very clean. Now, this place is way on the expensive side (lowest rate of 1100 rmb with pre-arranged discount) - but I challenge anyone to not be satisfied with the "be" level selection. By far the best I've seen. One really cool thing they do is separate the 3 levels of girls, so you clearly know what you're looking at. Note: I was there early enough that I didn't experience the "stampede" - not sure how I'd feel about it.
I chose 511, I mention this only because I experienced the worst case of false advertising I've seen. Her rack went from a see to A the moment she undressed. However she was a very nice girl with a great sense of humor (just wish my Chinese was better). Posting late, but a few weeks back I spent three nights in Shanghai and had a few adventures. Just reading SamCan's post right below reminds me I missed out on Judy's. I do not know what you saw meant, but I would think if that was a raid, there would be more than a couple of police motorcycles and a few cops present. (There would be police wagons for people they arrested.) I do hope that there will not be bad weather in Shanghai, and if there is anything, just a brief passing storm.

As previously reported, Shanghai is in a midst of a 3 month clean-up. There will be sweeps in concentrated areas from time to time. It isn't a massive op such as the shutdown in Dongguan. I assume they are just trying to maintain and keep the sex trade under control and not let the number get out of hand. Hongqiao / Hongkou is currently the area the LE are hitting. There a number of places that will be closed for a couple of days. There are those which remain open but have their storefront appear as if they are closed.
The mini sweeps will occur from time to time for another month or so. All I can suggest is for you to call up your places or contacts ahead of time and ask what their situation is. Be aware that some places might still be open under heavy weather but to obtain your business, they will tell you the weather is calm and quiet.

So, I'd love to know what places are still safe and good, so as to avoid being caught the middle of a bad situation. The Macau section of this website is thriving like crazy with lots of frequent reports. I appreciate your reports and wish we could get more, that's all. I like the shanghai nightlife guide website but sometimes I feel like the descriptions are a bit too flattering / complimentary of the places. Nothing beats real reports.

Saw quite a few inquiries here about the location of this Buddha place. From the junction of Shanxi bei lu and Changping lu. Go west along Changping lu. About 100 m on the right (north) side of the street, set back a little behind 2 rows of parking. It is set right in between a dentist on the right and tax collection agency on the left. Recent trip to Shanghai, and I decided to skip Manhattan's and Judy's and go straight for the saunas, to see if there are any that might hold a candle to Macau.
I was pleasantly surprised this time, compared to my previous experience with Kang Ding sauna (though I did go during CNY, so selection was poor).
Overall: Macau still wins, but can be more expensive by 400-800 RMB, though the experience is much nicer. My first try was ReHai, which is sometimes translated as Red Sauna. Characters mean "warm sea". It's located almost right next to the Damuqiao Rd metro station, but you wouldn't see it unless you're looking for it. There are guys around (security?) that will give you a clue. Taz.They do this kind of "stampede" or "cattle auction" when they are more busy. That means they will "collect" the guys in their waiting rooms till at least 10 to 20 guys come together (just to avoid the girls have to line up on stage, than back to their "relaxing room", than 2 minutes later the next lineup for the next guy). So they only have a new lineup every 10 to 20 minutes and each time for a group of customers together.
Several saunas do that, but what I felt "special" was, that the group had more guys (in my last visit case, it was like the start of the new iPhone sales)! Some Chinese guys even have jostled and pushed around each other in front of the "selection stage room" to make sure they could be the first one when the door will open! And than a fast rush inside, where one host with a microphone introduced the girls and caught up the "orders" of the guys. That was a very stressful experience for the customer I guided there, because till he made his choice, forward the number to me and I called her out in Chinese to the host, his 2 favorite girls already have been "dialed out" by other guys, that's why we talk about the "cattle auction" style on our page.

Basically, shanghai is the new Dongguan, sort of speak. Consider it as Dongguan jr. The services still doesn't rank up to what was once DG but quantity is aplenty compared to other major cities. The sauna Marauder went is a good place, very good sanitary condition, they have far more than 4 girls, and I think they just did not show him all at the first time. The sauna was in a building, so very safe. The session supposed to be 90 mins, with full service (no anal) and the water bed service is very good. You could cum twice at least.

Those MP's I assume your referring to, I would consider them as glorified BBS'. The chicks are dressed hotter and the atmosphere a bit nicer and cleaner. I've been to 2 of those. Just to report a very bad experience in a Sauna / MP in Fuzhou road. This Sauna is located on the first floor (in the corner of a building), have red lights on the door and Red neon "BAR"sign. It is in front of many ICBC ATM (cash machines). I don't know the street number.

I know China quite well and never had or heard about such king of aggression and violence in Sauna or MP. I considered to go to the police station, but I was leaving China the following days, and was just afraid that the process take time and delay my departure, or having problem with the police cause the aggression occurred in a massage parlor.

So sorry for your experience. China is normally very safe, but except for mongering.
Prostitution is strictly forbidden in China, so mafia make use it. They reckon that people dared not call police even if they are blackmailed concerning reputation or punishment.
Local Chinese are also very cautious about mongering, only go to saunas they are familiar or introduced by friends.

Girls started her massage in the waiting room and when she touch my private parts I asked her to wait to be on the massage room. She insisted but I rejected. She told me she will check if one room was available and leave.

If so, this is a well known scam. Never go with those people. It's at best a poor experience, and at worst a shakedown like you experienced. It has also been reported many times that you always pay, or risk violence. These are criminals / gangs. The best you can hope for is negotiate for a much lower amount. I think you could have negotiated down more. At least you paid via CC so perhaps you can initiate a chargeback.

2 guys enter in the room, one immediately blocked the door and the other sit down in front of me. He started to said calmly that prostitution was illegal in China, and step by step, pressure increase and he finish by death threatens. I was very unhappy and told him. I tried to go but the guy in the door repel me. After 20 minutes of discussion 3 other guys join the rooms. One of the new guy ask me to pay if I want to leave alive. I rejected. They started to beat me. I was very surprise as I know very well China and it is normally very safe. I never thought they will beat me, and certainly not with such level of violence. 5 Chinese against me, they were not brave but I didn't have chance to win. I then accepted to pay to stop them. Be safe and take care.Because of these scams, China is one of the few places where credit cards are sometimes riskier to carry than cash. Or you can try to stash the credit card in a shoe or something. Most of the scams, especially the tea house scam, are predicated on getting the mark to use his or her credit card, ATM card or debit card.

There are many ways to find places without any risk for scamming. All saunas I checked are reliable, never found any "scamming" sauna except the "black ones" which you only will enter, if you follow the "pimps" who approach you on the street. Follow recommendations you find here or on our page and you will not have any risk to enter a illegal "black shop" and you will not be cheated any where! All saunas (and also all "reliable" massage shops) call out a reasonable price, offer a reasonable service for that and I never had any case where someone need to pay more. So I think you mixed the "scamming stories", which are only about the "street scamming scenes" or the "cheating outcall escort" scene with the very reliable sauna and massage scene!
No need to worry, you can have a lot of fun in Shanghai.
