Never heard of WUXY. Could you mean Wuxi? If so, it is between Suzhou and Changzhou about 2 to 2 1/2 hours drive, or about one hour + by express train west of Shanghai.

Building on an earlier post I had to try. The jury is still out, but wait a minute.
Here is how it works. It is indeed a wonderful styled place and the girls are stunners, but as we are in an expatriate living quarter (I assume from the environment) there are pitfalls. 200RMB for an hour oil is steep, from 1, 5 hours the HJ seems to be included. The rooms are classical and the girls playful. BUT the main objective is to buy time AND to sell the stupid VIP discount card (I forgot but something like 1000 RMB gives you a 10% discount etc.). Nothing wrong with that, you also get a 40 RMB voucher for next time. The girl let me explore everything, one of my best HJs ever and she was a good masseuse. But I do not think I want to pay 100 RMB for half an hour sales pitch on the stupid VIP card, which she did after we finished the deed. Whoever gave them this idea may be beaten.

Overall high class on location, massage and girls, but it is close to a scam, I paid in the end for 2 hours 400 RMB and a 100RMB tip for full naked access and that is too close to the Sacrosa afternoon, so no repeat unless I get her in my hotel for a reasonable overnight stay.

I have heard of such schemes which were floated some years back in the south; not exactly from saunas or spas but from beauty parlours (not BBS) and some of the locals actually paid in excess of RMB 3000 and while they did enjoy the so called discounts on the first couple of hair do's; facials or whatever; but then overnight the establishment would shut down and even the employees were not aware...
My take on these scams is that once they achieved their goals on say about 100 plus clients with a received booty of about 300K RMB; they would just shut down and dissappear....I am not saying that this would happen in the your case....but one never knows...
I rather fend off such sales pitches and pay as I use their services.

I have some questions about Club 999. As I do not speak any chinese, its kind of hard to figure out or asking by myself :)
1. How long time do you actually have with the girl once to step into the "private" massage-room? 60 minutes?

I paid a visit to the Sauna on Huai Hai Lu, in front of Times Square Puxi (very close to People's Square, for those of you less familiar with Shanghai).
From the Main Times Square Entrance, look across Huai Hai Lu: There’s a building with red letters announcing a KTV (4th Floor, I think) and a Sauna on 9F.
Panoramic elevator takes you straight to 9F, which is entirely occupied by this sauna. Place is nicely appointed, I’d rate it similar to Sacrosa. Resting room and jacuzzis overlooks People’s Square, which is kind of nice.
Usual Sauna routine: Shower, Pyjamas, a short rest and off you go to the massage area. I was offered no line up yesterday, just escorted to a mid-sized room with a massage table, where a lady (no 17) was waiting for me.

1. I think it is 70 minutes. Honestly, I've never watched. There are too many other goodies to pay attention to.
2. Yes. But, best skip the soapy to have enough time. Just shake your head no when you first get in and go to town. It's hard to get off during the soapy part, but bunches of fun.

I purchase some generic Viagra in Shenzhen this way, I get 4 tablets for 15 - 20RMB. I have tried several 'brands' of these tablets, the one I like in Shenzhen is called LI JIA LI (package of 4 BLUE VIAGRA SHAPED TABLETS). There is another LIJIALI in foil wrapped capsules but I have not tried this and it is from a different company. A fake of a fake?
I take half a tablet and a get a great effect.
I agree that some of the stuff you get in the shops is junk, some may actually be dangerous to you - you can afford the real stuff from the pharmacy you should get it, otherwise you can find useful pills in sex shops and even some grocery stores.

The place looks slightly run down but is still better than most of the massage places. It seems to be frequented by the Japanese expat community.
RMB268 brings you 90 min of shower, hot-stone treatment, head massage and oil massage.

Service is nice, friendly and unrushed, the massage was good, but I cannot report anything really outstanding.

Take Metro line 1 to Shaanxi Nan Lu station, go out of exit 2, walk along Huai Hai Zhong lu for about 5 minutes. You'll pass a shopping center surrounded by construction (Hong Kong New World Shopping Center - on both sides of road and connected with an overpass), then on your right a small park decked out with World Expo themes (with a Porsche store in the park!) then after that, and again on your right, will be Times Square Shopping Center at 99 Huaihai Zhong Lu.

Do you remember what was the closest intersection by any chance? I live close by Jianguo Lu, but I never noticed 3 Moon Massage.

Was in Shanghai for a quick business trip and tried to find those BBS that I so fondly remember. However, as documented here, because of Expo 2010 many of these places have been raided and closed. But if you look hard enough they are still there.
Found a couple on Wan Hang Du Lu, both dingy and tiny and really uncomfortable in the recent heat wave in SH but the girls are pretty good and prices are traditional. One is close by the gas station on WHD Lu and they were even selling birds in the front. Three girls inside and chose the cutest, youngest of the lot. Sells Cialis also and all three at a 10% or so mark up from most other places but if you live and work in that area it is convenient. Blister pack of 5 Viagra was RMB535 if I remember correctly.

WOW! It looks like Expo 2010 crack downs are really putting a damper on the fun there.

Yes, it's the place near the corner of Ming Yue and Baihua. I went back to use up the remainder on my card last week, was hit with the usual relentless upselling - every few minutes for a solid hour. I had to show the contents of my pockets to convince the girl that I had no way to put more money on the card! Massage was ok, but I will not be going back. The conversation was all in Chinese, but language would not be a defence - they have printed cards to get the point across! Never again....

I can't report on sauna because I am a rare user, they are pricey as fuck in Shanghai and I can think of better ways to spend 800 kuai.
On the BBS side, I have been recently frequenting a few that have been commented about on the board in recent months. Not going to repeat info on there because it is an easy find for any serious user.
I have noticed all the old BBS haunts, such as Jing An's previous red light district are fully closed down. The village is also long gone. Happy town, I am not too sure, but from my experiences recently, the nothern outskirts seem to still hold some pockets of action.
I was recently locked in a BBS and told the LE were outside. The laoban was outside the door and hung a bike lock over the door handles. After 15 mins the girls called him and he said it was safe to leave.
So really, not for the feint of heart. Better and safer if you speak some Chinese or are pretty experienced with China mongering.
If you are only looking to monger, I would suggest safer waters such as Shenzhen or Guangzhou. Arrived in Shanghai a week ago - we were told to stay in our seats, and 2 teams of people in full biohazard suits entered the plane and took everyone's temperature. First pass is some device that puts 4 red dots on your head. If that one is suspicious, round two is with a standard electronic oral thermometer. They put on disposable covers, but I'll but they re-stack them later for reuse...
It is a rather scary process - who knows what the guy 2 rows and on the opposite side of the plane has going on. It looks like a rote and unthinking response. Swinging in the opposite direction of the SARS response is also not a good solution.
I wonder what they are going to do once the real flu season starts... already had some colleagues decide NOT to come to China for a trade show, because they were worried about the quarantine. Great - just when they need more travellers here, the new policy scares people away.

OK, I was certain I could find a way to make this into a little gold mine, or at least pay some small dividends. I was sorely mistaken.
Over the past couple months I've tried out about 10 numbers from CG. I intentionally went for the ones that I thought were most likely to have real pictures (i.e. not those obvious fake ones, ad said "100% really photo", etc.), or in a few cases I just abandoned the idea that the girl would be the one in the photo and went for quality massage, service, etc.
Here are the results:

Average quality of massage (1 to 10): 1 (only because I didn't include zero as an option here)
Average quality of sex (1 to 10): 5 or 6...a few did ok, none rocked my world.
Average looks for the girls: Surprisingly not bad in this category, but not nearly as good as the pictures, even the "natural looking" pictures
Average punctuality: 30 min to 1 hour later than promised, and unbelievably three NO SHOWS (they messaged hours later saying they had been busy and could they come immediately now, but I never replied).

Arrived this morning for the second stay in SH. I have read through the forum these past few week and documented all your suggestions/remarks in a 40 page word document including maps.
Fist I contacted a lady I met through POF (plentyoffish). But she only wanted meet me at my hotel if I send her my picture (which she already had) and my birthday. I think I took one for the team on this one:
Stayed here for 1 night. Went to the desk at 1st floor and looked into the menu. It looked all quite legit and took a swedish massage for 480.

Saturday:
Went downtown to check out the Feng Ding Yuan Club sauna on 6F of the Feng Xiang Clothing market on Nanjing Xi Lu. One cannot see Pudong very far because of the smog. Still ok hotel for the price which includes a substantial breakfast. The internet connection is fast, at least it would be fast if it connected. I don't think I am doing anything wrong as I have networked PCs so I know what I am doing.
The place is definitely girl friendly. In the space of less than 72 hours I took 4 girls up to my room. This was preceded by some chit-chat in full view at in the loby. Amusing was concierge who, by the 4th came around, could not hide his surprise. Actually I lucked out on three of the four and so was not the superstud he may have thought. Having stayed in this area of Shanghai many times I can offer the following information to those asking about street action. First, there are several touts there and as previously said DON'T GO WITH A TOUT! They are there to rip you off. Simply say: Bu yao (which translates to Don't want), and they will leave you alone.
There are several girls who hang out just past the Portman-Ritz Carlton heading west on Nanjing lu. To find them, wait till at least 9pm and walk on the Portman side of the street heading toward TGL. They will find you if you walk slowly and look around. The girls rotate a lot but one girl I met can be highly recommended. Her name is Xiao li. She is very short, about 5' in heels and has large breasts. She is there most nights. Bargain with them as the first price will be high.
If you don't find any street girls, then I recommend going to Malone's. The bars get going after 10 PM. Any girl who walks in alone is working. Make eye contact and smile and they will usually come over to you.
I have found that the girls at Malone's less mercenary than those on the other side of TGL at Judys or Manhattan. The girls at Malones will talk to you for awhile if you buy them a drink or two. When they ask you what hotel you are staying at, the negotiations will usually begin. The later at night, the better you can negotiate.
Its only a 5 minute walk to get from Malone's to Judys so its easy to hit all 3 bars in one night. Judy's has girls from other countries, while Malone's generally attracts more locals. Be careful at Manhattan as there are several ladyboys who hang out there.

Is the sauna in the Merrylin Hotel still open? Its near the Pudong Intercontinental and the Purple Mountain Hotel.
Also, there was a sauna off Huaihai Road, near Huaihai Park called San Na. back in March I saw that it was closed with a note on the door. Did it move to another place?

On Lingling Lu I counted 4 pink establishment and a few questionable massage shops., 2pink ones on each side of the road between Xiamuqiao Lu and Fenglin Lu. But I was not impressed with the quality of the girls. But maybe it is better in the evening. Might go back one night.

Visited Zhapu Lu mentioned in an earlier report and their about 8-10 BBS’s on that busy and lively street. It seems to me that they are not attracting people’s attention anymore using those turning colored lights outside. When you see those, it is usually a normal hairdresser. The BBS’s have normal lighting, Chinese text written on their windows and in some the view is blocked by curtains or otherwise. Yes, I am sure on the pricing. I was quoted 698, and as far as I could tell there was no 'breakdown' for entry / deed. I had expected 800 and only had 600 on me which is why I was very conscious of the price. It was not busy at the time, maybe only 3 or 4 customers. Possibly this had something to do with it. I initially explained I did not have much cash but the management informed me I could go to a nearby ATM to make the withdrawal after the event. At 698 this was a bargain because of the time involved (& quality of service). I estimate that I had about 1:45 with the girl. I would be interested to know if that is normal for Shanghai Saunas.

Visited Shanghai for the first time recently and thought I'd write up my experiences.

I sized up the scene and chose a small massage place that advertised whole body massage for 50 RMB/hour. I was escorted to a private room and the girl produced another menu that had different options and prices, and recommended the 130 RMB "ethereal oil massage" or whatever saying "it's very satisfying". I thought that was code for "includes happy ending" so I chose it, got naked, and laid on the table. Over the next hour she proceeded to give me an okay-ish normal massage and I kept waiting for the happy ending bit to start, but it never did. She never went anywhere near my happy region and I was too much of an idiot to breach the topic. So in the end she just said "okay, massage over" and left, and I was forced to put my clothes back on and leave unsatisfied, having only 70 RMB left to play with.
I was resigned to the fact that I'd have to go back to the hotel when this guy came up to me and started asking if I want massage/girls/sex. He said the price was 200 RMB. I told him I only have 70 RMB and can I get just a HJ for that price? He said no problem and told me to follow him.

I take it out, wave it at them saying "see? see? It's only a hotel room card key!". At which point they start asking "which hotel? which room?". Now I'm really getting scared; having these people know where I'm staying would be a monumentally bad idea.
So I gather whatever courage I have left, point at the 70 RMB at the counter, say "That's all the money I have; I'm leaving now" and walk out the door, fully expecting for one of them to try to stop me. They don't. I rapidly walk back towards the main street, ready to start running the moment I notice anybody else coming out from the place, but nobody does.
I reach the main street safely and continue my rapid walking all the way back to my hotel. I only feel safe once I'm back in my room with the deadbolt stopping anyone from coming in.
In hindsight, I can't believe how stupid I was. I should've taken some time to do research on China (just reading this forum would've told me all I needed to know to avoid these kinds of problems), and even without that, I should've known better than to trust some random guy on the street and follow him to some out-of-the-way place.
On the other hand, I feel incredibly lucky to having escaped the situation with only the loss of 70 RMB. Much, much worse could've happened. I consider this a very cheap lesson that I'm sure I will never forget. It's so easy to get carried away by the thoughts of nubile young women about to be servicing your every need, if only you follow this nice gentleman here whose going to introduce you to them...The risk doesn't seem that high when you meet him, it's a bright street scene with hundreds of people around after all, what could go wrong?

Yeah, you are really lucky man. I've heard of many really bad horror stories, some from members on another forum and others from friends in Shanghai. 70 RMB is really cheap, and without any black eyes or bruises. It's good for someone to remind us once in a while, especially for new comers to China, and probably most of Asia as these types of scams are prevalent all over.

Transportation's pretty cheap in Shanghai so you only probably need to give 15-25 RMB. Don't mind paying as long as it's not asked for rudely.

I was in SH recently for a long weekend and initially to afraid to visit my usual sauna places. However I went with friends to Tongren Lu and ended up in Manhatten where I usually don't go (prefer the lighter drinking bars). Well, if you've been there you know it's like a meet market! We went in there and after making some brief Eye contact (just accidentally by looking around) were approached by mostly vietnamese and philippine girls. This certainly echoes my own experience on my last trip to Shanghai. For reasons of discretion I needed to have in-call, so I decided to give the numbers on Craigslist a call. They have a couple dozen numbers updating every day, so you know the vast majority are duplicates and professionally posted. My experience is exactly as Bonzo had... for both numbers that I tried each girl - who was not the same as her pic - immediately tried to upsell (from basic RMB600 service to 2-hour RMB800 service). Really annoying and even tried to offer massage first, so that she could use up the time and I would be trapped into paying money as the girl had performed some "service."

Over the past couple months I've tried out about 10 numbers from CG. I intentionally went for the ones that I thought were most likely to have real pictures (i.e. not those obvious fake ones, ad said "100% really photo", etc.), or in a few cases I just abandoned the idea that the girl would be the one in the photo and went for quality massage, service, etc.

Average quality of massage (1 to 10): 1 (only because I didn't include zero as an option here)
Average quality of sex (1 to 10): 5 or 6...a few did ok, none rocked my world.
Average looks for the girls: Surprisingly not bad in this category, but not nearly as good as the pictures, even the "natural looking" pictures
Average punctuality: 30 min to 1 hour later than promised, and unbelievably three NO SHOWS (they messaged hours later saying they had been busy and could they come immediately now, but I never replied).
There seem to be a few adds on there for no up-selling (500, 700, and 800 prices listed right on the subject lines), which are the three I didn't try since there's no way those photos are real. I should have though. Maybe I will sometime, but I'm so burned out on CG that I've had it for the time being. Anyone who has feel free to inform us.
Conclusion - Avoid CG like the plague and leave it to the business travelers who don't know any better or don't care.

Flo BertI just tried this massage place recently. It is at the NW junction of Yan'an Road and Zhejiang Road. The place is called Yishen Tang. The place is very nicely decorated, almost with a zen feel, plus soothing music and the rooms come with in-room shower (at least the one I had did). The room even comes with a huge wooden tub if you want to soak yourself.

Now I sort of know why our foreign monger friends come over to Chang Ping/Dongguan/Shenzhen, expecting that everything is gonna be peachy keen even if they don't speak any Chinese.
Just got back last week from Shanghai - which I've not gone to for at least a a year or so. I was having myself a grand ole time at Zapata's when the thought struck me that at least 50% of the patrons there were foreigners, and that conversations were mainly conducted NOT in chinese, but in English and other foreign languages!! Good God, I might as well have been in that place during the era of the French Concession in Shanghai and during the Soong sisters era!! (Soong Ching Ling's former house is where Zapata and Sasha's restaurant is at).
I chatted up 6 gals sitting on the table next to mine and found out that they all were actually working full time in Shanghai - but that only 1 had fluent command of Putonghua. One other spoke a smattering of such whilst the other 4 totally did not speak it at all. Gals!! Furrener Gals!! Living and working in Shanghai without knowing how to speak Chinese!! NO WONDER guys who had previously "experienced China" only in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou etc think that they can just land in C.P./Dongguan and hit the streets running.
I mean, after going mainly to Southern China only during the past year or so, I had BASICALLY FORGOTTEN that the rest of China ain't like what Sarg 2009 describes it as being. People were courteous and civil and acts more like what I GUESS Sarg thinks all Chinese - and I guess the rest of the world - should act and think like. On top of it all, it was clean and a helluva lot safer - at least that is what I felt! Shanghai is 100% more foreign friendly than Southern China.
Guys - those of you contemplating visiting us in these parts (Southern China) - be ready to face a different China than what you'd experienced in other major Chiense Metropolis like Shanghai. It's basically the Wild Wild West out here and you'd better come prepared. At least, hook yourself up with some other mongers who've got previous experience, contacts etc and enjoy our little piece of Paradise. And please do not come OR go being judgemental about what goes on in these parts. It is what it is!

-Sacrosa and Heting closed. Intent was to reopen today, but they did not. They might try it tomorrow.
- Baoan (Golden Dream Sauna) offering foot massage only. No special services. That's straight from the hammer commander at the desk.
- Ganghong Sauna (2F, Ganghong Hotel) is closed for "interior decoration" therefore "no operations". Same company operates the sauna at Huasheng Peninsula Hotel on Wusong Lu.
- B2 has been gone a long time. It will never be back. Both B1 and B3 of World Plaza is now the "Children's Players Club" with extensive shops, games, and carnival-like rides.
- The "Pants Police" have been everywhere. Most massage shops that used to allow massage without 'giant boser shhort" now insist on it. "Safer" they say.
- One very quaint and private massage shop (just average kind of place) in the financial area had the Gong An walk in, cut straight to the back, head up the stairs and start knowcking on doors. Everyone was in legit activities at the time, but it scared the manager so bad that for THREE WEEKS he would not allow customers to shower in the place. Nor, would he even allow OIL MASSAGE. Couldn't make it up if I tried.
But. There are new and innovative ways to safely monger. It's takes a little more calling and coordination, but it's very safe indeed.

Initially I came with the intention to visit most of well frequented sauna’s posted on this board. I did visit Sacrosa and 999 in my first weekend, but the stories about the raids have really scared me. The thought of having to spend a week in jail, never be able to come back to China and possible layoff/divorce have made me decide to look for other options.
I made contact with two girls through the AFF site and chatted with them on occasion. Last week I made appointments with them to go out on the town. With the first one there was no chemistry so I went back to the hotel early. But with the second one it was a different story. We had a nice dinner and as we were thinking about where to go next I proposed her place and she agreed without hesitation. Hadn't been to SH for a while so was pretty excited heading into this trip. Got into town, tried Shanghai Hotel. Closed. Made my way over to Tomson. Closed too. Hadn't checked this board beforehand and now I know why they're closed.
Shanghai Hotel closure seems temporary. Entryway still there just closed. There were two other dudes in the elevator lobby who looked just as confused as I was. Tried the doors even though the place was obviously closed (hehe, thought of the same thing but they beat me to it) Tomson seemed permanently closed (I could be remembering the location incorrectly. Had only been once or twice in the past and the entry is somewhat convoluted). Asked the workers hanging around the building and they mentioned that it closed 6mo ago?
Hopped a taxi to TRL and was chatting with the driver about the closures. He mentioned one place on Beijing Lu and Dating Lu. Didn't say anything about crackdowns though. Didn't try the place since after TRL I wandered over to a place on the other side of Yan An Lu which I had forgotten about earlier (across from Shanghai Hotel on Wulumuqi Lu). And yes, closed also.
So damn. What now? Think I will try that Yi Sheng Tang place mentioned in another post. But anyone know of a good, "safe" (is that possible these days? ) sauna still in operation? PM me if you're worried it'll make the local authority's hit list.

The whole crackdown thing has me a little worried. Is it because of Expo or upcoming Oct 1 National Day? What happened in prior years around this time? And is it just SH or are raids pretty common in the entire country around National Day?

It is normal and applies, albeit to varying extents, nationwide. Every year during this period the crackdown starts and runs until after National Day. I reckon that this year may be tougher because of Expo 2010 and that it is an important political anniversary year.

In my opinion, Step 1 of the whole thing targeted the more obvious and less well connected places popular with Laowai, and this is where, for instance, B2 went down.
LE has definitely gone a few layers down, now shooting pretty much at everything that moves, even in 200% Chinese parts of the city, certainly prompted by Neighbourhood Committees that disapprove of "vulgar and obscene" behaviours that might pervert the young and hamper the way towards an "harmonious society".
Guys, do not risk it. As OAH says, use your agenda and get Service Providers to go to your place, or go for take away in places like TRL (that in my opinion will be targeted sooner or later, given the high concentration of laowai and working girls).

2. fine (people I know did pay arounf 30Krmb... not he worse)
3. they contact embassy + employer
4. no more work permit/ visa... and 30 days to leave China
Among people caught, one is a very good friend of mine who had to leave China after.... more than 10 years being there!!!

I went there yesterday by #8 subway and got off at Siping Road station and today I went by taxi. It was not that difficult to find and within 5 minutes' walk and I was there. I have to agree that the roadwork has made the whole road a mess and if you come by taxi, the driver may have difficulty to find the right turn especially if you cannot communicate with him in Mandarin. Luckily I have no problem as I'm ethnic Chinese.
The place was not that busy when I visited yesterday. It was about 6pm and I was led to a waiting room and then had a shower. There were about a dozen girls for the line up and the quality was so so, mostly 6-7 in my view. So I guess it is still OK to go to saunas like Heting after all but go to those with good connections.

Went to a place I never noticed before in Jing An area (maybe edge of Jing An and Pu Tuo)

Visited Shanghai for the first time recently and thought I'd write up my experiences.
Had a free night on a recent business trip so thought I'd go out walking around the hotel a bit and seeing if I could score some action. I wanted to avoid the possibility of something bad happening to me so I left all my valuables, credit cards, passport, etc, in my hotel, and took just 200 RMB and my hotel room card key with me and went walking around the nearby entertainment district.
I sized up the scene and chose a small massage place that advertised whole body massage for 50 RMB/hour. I was escorted to a private room and the girl produced another menu that had different options and prices, and recommended the 130 RMB "ethereal oil massage" or whatever saying "it's very satisfying". I thought that was code for "includes happy ending" so I chose it, got naked, and laid on the table. Over the next hour she proceeded to give me an okay-ish normal massage and I kept waiting for the happy ending bit to start, but it never did. She never went anywhere near my happy region and I was too much of an idiot to breach the topic. So in the end she just said "okay, massage over" and left, and I was forced to put my clothes back on and leave unsatisfied, having only 70 RMB left to play with.
I was resigned to the fact that I'd have to go back to the hotel when this guy came up to me and started asking if I want massage/girls/sex. He said the price was 200 RMB. I told him I only have 70 RMB and can I get just a HJ for that price? He said no problem and told me to follow him.
We started walking along the main entertainment street and as long as we were on that one I felt safe, I expected him at any moment to turn to any of the many massage places on the street, but he just kept walking. Eventually I asked him how far away is this place and he said "very near". Bit after that he turned to a deserted side street and started walking along it.
I was having second thoughts by now but for some reason I turned and followed him. I kept looking around me to verify he didn't have accomplices gathering on me to rob me or worse.
Finally he turns and goes into the door of this sleazy establishment. I swallow my misgivings and follow him in, where I'm immediately escorted to a private room with a couch, table and TV. A selection of girls is brought out, I choose the one I want, she sits next to me and we begin chitchatting. Another girl asks me what I want to drink, I tell her I don't want anything to drink.
They find this very odd but I'm adamant that I don't want any drinks. She goes away. I proceed to explain to the girl I just want a HJ for 70 MB. She doesn't know how to deal with this.
The other girl comes back in with a huge plate full of fruits and drinks. I get up and angrily stop her from putting it down on the table, explaining I don't want any of it, I just want a HJ. She gets very angry but eventually leaves.

One of the guys actually pats my pockets to verify this and notices my hotel room card key which is the size and shape of a credit card.
I take it out, wave it at them saying "see? see? It's only a hotel room card key!". At which point they start asking "which hotel? which room?". Now I'm really getting scared; having these people know where I'm staying would be a monumentally bad idea.
So I gather whatever courage I have left, point at the 70 RMB at the counter, say "That's all the money I have; I'm leaving now" and walk out the door, fully expecting for one of them to try to stop me. They don't. I rapidly walk back towards the main street, ready to start running the moment I notice anybody else coming out from the place, but nobody does.
I reach the main street safely and continue my rapid walking all the way back to my hotel. I only feel safe once I'm back in my room with the deadbolt stopping anyone from coming in.
In hindsight, I can't believe how stupid I was. I should've taken some time to do research on China (just reading this forum would've told me all I needed to know to avoid these kinds of problems), and even without that, I should've known better than to trust some random guy on the street and follow him to some out-of-the-way place.
On the other hand, I feel incredibly lucky to having escaped the situation with only the loss of 70 RMB. Much, much worse could've happened. I consider this a very cheap lesson that I'm sure I will never forget. It's so easy to get carried away by the thoughts of nubile young women about to be servicing your every need, if only you follow this nice gentleman here whose going to introduce you to them...The risk doesn't seem that high when you meet him, it's a bright street scene with hundreds of people around after all, what could go wrong?

Never.Agreed. Happened to me once. That guy was lucky. I had a few drinks and about 300 Yuan ... and had to fight my way out. Fortunately, most young Chinese kids don't actually know how to fight and I'm just ugly enough to intimadate 'em anyway. One guy chased after me and I held out a 100 RMB note - he stopped and I dropped it on the ground, turned and walked away, not bothering to look back.

I am glad you called a regular. It is definitely not safe in Shanghai at the moment. I called one of the mamasan at one of the massage joints I frequent and and she said most of the girls have either gone home, gone freelance or moving between joints so regularly. Zapatas appears to get busier and busier. Wed night is still ladies night - so crowded - hard to get through the crowd and almost impossible to get a drink at times.

Usual story..... nothing new on planet earth when little head prevails on big head.
he follows a tout, go to some bar/ktv joint.
Certainly not the usual and legitimate KTV establishment, most likely a venue type of dodgy bar, proposing the KTV approach, music, a girl with you, drinks, snacks, the girl gets more intimate and they have sex.
The bill comes, outrageous as happens in all scams.
He protests, understands there is not much he can do on the spot, pays (do not know if cash, most likely, or credit card, unlikely as he has family at home).
Goes back to the hotel and share the story with some friends and a local guide brings up the matter to the police with his approval.
Police raids the place and shuts it down.
Police later gets a video, most likely in an anonimous way:), of him with a girl in the establishment and clearly showing he had FS with her.
Who knows what "comments" could have been attached to the video, maybe turning things upside down, maybe allegedly suggesting he has been forcing the girl against her will etc etc
A scam always have escape plans for the scammers to get out clean.
This turns against him as it is then clear there is at least a prostitution law infringement.
Most likely police suggests he can be in serious troubles now.
We know when a foreigner is in jail in those areas, for such an offence, the key opening the door gets lost for quite a while and there is not much your home consulate can do, if they want to do something, seen the type of offence.
Consulates do not want to be seen mixing up and defending certain types of law infringements.

I would not mix up the danger occurring from LE and the danger occurring from scams.
LE can get in any legitimate and serious establishment and "clean" the place.
We have read of quite some well known venues, where one can leave his open wallet on a bench in the locker rooms and get it back intact, being raided by police. In that case both the establishment and possibly the customer get in troubles.
Those places tend to protect their customers (as much as they can) with alerts, locked doors, attempts to delay the action of the LE inside the building, so the customer can fly out.
Scams are certainly more dangerous as you will not step out of the scam without a price to be paid. In the best case scenario with much less money in your pockets. Highly recommended not to try to be smart and go to police.
It is clear the scam has been infringing the law more than what you did.
But a) they might even have connections with LE, b) they know how to set all up and protect themselves against tough victims, c) it is their "job" so they have experience and know-how on how to conduct the scam succesfully.
This can happen in any place: even more in "normal places" where the tout fishes for 'customers'

Most Watson's require prescription for V and were not selling C up to Mid June when I left Shanghai. Other small local pharmacies have both. The #1 Pharmacy on Nan Jing Walkway has both but again RX is needed for V. (Go figure)

If you go to the Portman Center/Ritz Carlton Hotel on West Nanjing Road, there is a small pharmacy on the second or third level of the Center that sells Cialis w/o a prescription. I forgot the charge, but if I recall correctly, it was the going rate when I was last there in the Spring.
The pharmacist there speaks some English, but if you bring a box of Cialis or write out the word, she will be able to find it for you.

If she is not your wife, you can be in trouble. There are still laws prohibiting unmarried couples from cohabitating in China.
You may find in a raid, if your girl is a foreigner too (anything but Chinese), your explanation can hold me water. An unmarried Chinese girl could be trouble but this is more a historical oddity perhaps 10 years ago.

Do not worry about the minimum value necessary in China to be caught for counterfeited products. You better worry to have any counterfeited item on you when you enter some countries in Europe, maybe coming back from China! A bag can be sufficient! to put you in troubles with the local customs.

Thanks for your reply. I agree with your point of view but still all this matter looks a bit strange to me. Think about all the Motels in town (168, 268, etc.) most of the rooms are occupied by couples that are not only watching TV. Plus if you bring the girl in the morning (not during night time), do you think that LE can still raid you. You can always claim that she's your girlfriend and that you want some privacy. I am getting concerned now!

I have spoken to people I do business with about this and it would be very unlikely that the LE will enter a 5 star hotel, but this can happend, the short time hotels are raided and you will be in trouble if you are with a local girl.
So please keep this in mind, when you go back to your hotel with your prize for the night.
I also like to keep to the Filipinas for that reason less chance the LE will be upset that I am taking a local girl with my foreigner money.

"Wei Ge" (V) should be available on most of the pharmacies and most of them are the real stuff as China has revoke the patent and Chinese drug companies are free to make generic ones.
You could probably go in with the name Wei Ge written on a piece of paper and they should know what you want.
After trying all main places in SH, I've definitely chosen Club 18 in Wulumuqi for 3 years. Expensive but by far the best service in town, they even improved last year with an all time CIM with smile... Chinese medicine is also effective in this regard. I was in the No 1 Pharmacy on Nanjing Lu the other day, and they have a selection there. Go up to the third (perhaps 4th? ) floor and head behind the escalator, where there is a curtained off counter selling vibrators, condoms and herbal V.

It's not as modern and nice as the usual places in SH like Sacrosa or Heting, but it was still decent fun. It is not directly on Baiyang or Longhui Road. When you get to the intersection of Baiyang/Longhui, there's a building on the southwest corner. Walk to the rear of this building and you'll see another building. That's the one. Check it out on Google Maps (satellite view) to see what I mean.

That was simply bad luck Waldeck. #903 was I guess 1 out of 100 not providing the service at 999. Been there many many times, and each time is from good to perfect.

The entrance is on the east side of Wulumuqi North Road (乌鲁木齐北路), between Nanjing West Road (南京西路) and Beijing West Road (北京西路). So, in coming from the Jing'an Temple Subway Station (Line 2), walk west along Nanjing West Road, turn right at Wulumuqi North Road, and the entrance is about 100 meters or so up the street on your right.
How will you know you have arrived? Easy. Facing the entrance to the building, there is a bank of ATMs on the left of the door. (Handy for getting your 900 RMB to pay for the services.) The wall inside the building is white, and there are gold letters with "Golden 18 Club" written in both English and Chinese. Still not enough for you? There should be a guy sitting there by the door who will lead you into the glass elevator to the right of the entrance, and press the button for the 5th floor.

Corner of Jinling Road and Guangxi Road. Entrance on Guangxi Road. Two attendants at street level. I took elevator to 7th floor with attendant beside me all the way, talking on his phone. He walked me down three flights of stairs. Nothing that we would be interested in was shown or offered. Maybe you would need an invite. High class furnishings. Attendant walked me back to the street.
Located at the corner of Jinling Road and Guangxi Road in Puxi. Entrance door on Guangxi Road with two attendants. Walked in, went to the elevator, punched 7. One of the attendants was at my side, talking on the phone. On reaching the 7th floor discovered plush surroundings. Asked if they had any entertainment. Didn't see anything we would interested in on the 7th or the 6th or the 5th floor. Attendant on the phone beside me all the way. Walked back to the elevators and the street and thanked the attendant. Not much in China is what it appears to be. Maybe with a local and an invite something may be available here. Looked classy enough.

the precise address is: wulumuqi bei lu 209, 5th floor. it's located at the northeast corner of wulumuqi bei lu and nanjing xi lu. if i remember correctly, the sign just says "sauna" in big neon letters. you go through the door on the first floor and you take the elevators on the right directly to the 5th floor where the magic happens.

Are there someone that know more places like 999? I have been there once and the expierince was really good and I am going back there. I am just in Shanghai for one more week and want to check out some other places as well. Do someone have a list of places like 999? Maybe a smaller place thats cheaper? I heard of saunas some one that have a list of them?
