In answer to the safety thing, not really. Rio I hear is bad and I am sure São Paulo has its places. But if you are in a crowded area it is fine. This place never sleeps. I've been meaning to try these clandestine saunas, and the fact that it's in apartments doesn't bother me at all. It's just the risk factor. This all seems much more dangerous than just one year ago. M1 NT technically is a club, with an annual membership fee. With membership guaranteed entry. Otherwise risk being turned away. It's been maybe 4 years since I was a member, so working from dated info. A buddy showed up there last Wednesday and couldn't get in until he called a friend who is in M1 NT management. So definitely suggest calling / emailing the club and reserving. Tables, as I recall, had a minimum spend. Again, my info is dated but recall it was on order of RMB5000. +/- depending on table size, but you get the general idea.

After that, I went by an old standby BBS near Gubei Lu and it was even worse. Not only was it closed, but the front wall and doors had been demolished and a new concrete wall had been built in its place.
Finally I went to another massage place and got a good, thorough massage for 298 RMB. Aaagh. Thanks to a suggestion on here, I made sure to get her Wechat for the future.

Thanks.Cialis and Viagra are available at pretty much every pharmacy without a prescription. Look for the green plus sign to find a pharmacy. They seem to be everywhere. If you cannot speak Chinese, then just mime getting an erection. Gets lots of laughs. They might try to talk you into a cheaper imitation, because the patents on Viagra and Cialis may have expired, but I always opt for the real thing. The price is almost exactly the same as in the United States, so they are expensive. Most recently, I bought the one-a-day Cialis pills, which are 5 MG pills. This way, I can just eat 2 of them for the typical 10 MG dose. As you know, it is not easy cutting a 20 MG Cialis pill.

During a recent visit, I was looking at outcall options online and longed for the good old days of detailed info available online. I came across an agency called "Shanghai Escort Review".
Short summary = It's legit, but with bait and switch wrt pics / profile, but there was FS. Yes, it provided much needed service delivered to my hotel room for the posted amount. No, I don't plan on repeating with the agency.
Long version, call me gullible but I thought the pics would be accurate given it is an agency. The site showed about 10 girls, with pics, profiles, services offered. I reached out to the agency via email from the website. I asked for confirmation Amy is as in the pics, to which they said yes. I asked for another pic, they sent some similar looking girl wearing sunglasses so I could not tell, I provided the hotel name and time and booked Amy. When evening came, I asked if my time could adjust 30 m earlier, and they accommodated. Amy arrived on time.
I chose Amy, the first profile due to her petite slim physique and persona implied in the profile and she was from Singapore. The girl that arrived was mid 20's, medium build, one shade or two shy of chubby (not fat), Chinese (afaik), and had an aggressive fast-paced personality and mood.
She walked all the way in when I opened the door, I said 'Hi, I don't think you're Amy'. To which she replied 'Yes I am'. 'You don't look like the pics at all'. To which she says 'Look again honey'. 'You're note from Singapore' I said.

I am an active contributor in SEA threads and have posted a couple of FR on the SH thread too. I travel here quite frequently on business but there is never enough time to hobby.

Although I am a very experienced international traveler and am aware of all the scams, for some reason she charmed me into taking a cab with her. We ended up at an unmarked building in a section of Shanghai that I did not readily recognize. The next two hours were truly scary. In short, after doing nothing that would rack up huge charges in a tiny private room fully-clothed except chatting and drinking a couple of beers, I was presented with a bill for 30,000 Rmb. When I refused to pay, two big guys came into the room and threatened to get physical. When I tried to call the police on my Chinese cell phone, they ripped it from my hand and said the police were paid off by the boss' father who ran operations like this all over town. I am a big guy too, but they had my outnumbered, so I reluctantly agreed to pay what I could with US bank cards. The total charged was probably close to $2,000. Finally after deciding that they had wrung all the money they could out of me, they gave me a "free" beer and sent me penniless back to my hotel in a cab. I immediately cancelled the charges online with my banks. There was some reluctance to void the charges since the proper PIN had been used, etc. , but eventually when the "vendor" did not respond to the banks' inquires the banks all agreed to credit my accounts. Whew.
Because I figured the crooks would be enraged when they learned the banks had voided the charges, I also changed hotels and kept a low profile for the rest of my trip. I even took a deep breath when going through outbound Chinese immigration since I was worried that these connected crooks might have lodged a claim against me that might prevent me from leaving China, which I was anxious to do. Luckily, things went smoothly, but I did breathe an extra sigh of relief when my AA flight took off for Dallas! Subsequent trips have been less eventful.
Moral (s) of this story:
1. Never go with any one you don't know, especially if you are alone. This can be difficult if you've had a couple of drinks and the come on is from a pretty young thing, but don't kid yourself that you are such a hot stud that cute young ladies are going to really approach you to go to parties, free massages, tea ceremonies, English classes, etc. It just does not happen!
2. Limit what you carry in terms of cash and cards, etc. And.
3. no p. In China is worth the risk and the stress of these situations.
I have worked all over the world and I am by no means young anymore, but this night in Shanghai still gives me chills and makes me very grateful that Karma or some other past good deeds, etc. Extricated me from a very dicey spot. Learn from my mistake. I did.

If it's too good to be true then it probably is. Don't think with the wrong head. Stay safe. It's enough that we have to be aware of authorities. Don't put yourself in a position to be in danger of being scammed.

That is a very unhappy event. I wonder how long these guys went to prison in China (can they bribe their way out?). Mon Dieu!
I have had several happy moments in China over the last 15 years, but the place was always complicated due to language and cultural issues. I hadn't been to Shanghai for about 2-3 years, but was considering a return in November. With this sustained crackdown, and the dramatic increase in prices, Shanghai and Beijing seem far less appealing to me. Am I missing something?

Went for an afternoon visit to Spring Ya'an Road last week. Seems they have a new regime there now. No showering in the room, instead you have to go along the hall to a dedicated shower room. Ok, before your massage but somewhat uncomfortable after, if you know what I mean.
Massage was pretty good but after the flip, the girl began the hustle for tips. On the positive side, BJ was on offer for 500, I declined being short of cash. Still, an uncomfortable experience.

But as Midwestern points out, I really think I got lucky. Over the years, WeChat has never worked well for me, so this time when it did I was pleasantly surprised, so much so that I wrote a report. I also wrote a report on finding a girl through Tantan, which is also new for me.

I appreciate the advice. On the way in will be in town just Tuesday night, then out to Beilun for 2 weeks, will have a few more days on the flipside. The only scene in Beilun are KTVs and they are stupid expensive. In Shanghai I usually stay at the Marriott Center City due to its proximity to subways, would love the Portman but its over the expense account. I think I am going to give Zapatas a shot for Taco Tuesday, and then perhaps the Pig or the spot. I think I saw some free lancers in there one trip, and one I really wanted but she didn't seem interested in me. (me early 50's,reasonable shape, with a little game). Not in to paying stupid amounts for tail. And frankly China is starting to get stupid. Last summer was in Manhattan quite a bit and SA was giving me enthusiastic models for $300, not eastern Europe but not $250 for an unenthusiastic Viet. I will be starting projects in Argentina (which has mixed reviews, but googling looks pretty reasonable), and Thailand, which also sounds like its on the downhill run. Have never hit Pattaya.

I had a few saved wechat addresses from my last trip and seeking arrangement tried one, and started a chat but she was non committal. So headed out to Zapatas one of my old stomping grounds from years gone by that used to have semi pros in abundance. This Tuesday night non were present but there was a large crowd of western college chick's enjoying the taco buffet and bottomless margaritas. Would highly recommend the food and hooch for 30 bucks. But I wanted a playmate was just getting ready to head to the pig, when wechat range and my polish model decided to play. Had a nice although expensive time with her. So I am thinking about using Airbnb, which is operating in many big cities in China, including Shanghai. Some of these places don't even require a face-to-face check-in. They have key-coded locks. And they are cheap. Anyone have any experience with using Airbnb to rendezvous with WGs? Any catches, warnings, risks, suggestions? I know there are local Chinese apps doing the same thing, but I want to stick to Airbnb because it's in English and I trust Airbnb. Thanks, bros.

Seems your mental dilemma caused a lot of vibe here.
Just would like to throw in a few more points:
- with an er nai set up you are more or less 'forced' to recoup your investment by going often, say 3-4 times a week, which might be inconvenient given other work / private commitments. But also, it will quickly get stale and feel like some kind of regular relationship. During the height of the crackdown last year I basically went to see my regular (in her workplace) 3 times a week. Service was good but since I did not want to explore other options (dangerous and little available at the time anyway) this regularity was kind of killing. And that was while not having to pay for an apartment etc, so I was quite free from a financial point of view. After a few months I reduced the frequency and started to venture out again (see my QQ comments earlier). They noticed my lower frequency and are asking what happened (ATM feeling). Just told them that I am traveling a lot this year.
- Try to avoid renting ST hotel in your name, while not sure if the hotels duly register these ST events with LE (as for real overnight stays), but how are you going to explain that a resident laowai is renting ST hotel rooms. Sure you can argue that she is your girlfriend etc and that both of you can not meet at home (like a lot of married Chinese lovebirds) but this is not something you should want. Always have the girl renting the room in her name and the hotel should not bother.

Since this is the current topic, I guess I'll share what I've been doing and how I've been handling it.
First off, I would like to clarify that I'm single and I wouldn't consider this an mistress situation. I currently stay in Shanghai for the most part but I often travel back and forth from Guangzhou. There's a chick who lives in Guangzhou that I'm fond of. I found her a place and currently pay her rent (6500). We have an understanding that I stay there whenever I'm in Guangzhou. No other men are to stay there as well or at least don't let me catch whiff of it. I give a little something every month to the complex security to keep an eye on her for me. I've told her it's fine if she hooks up with other men as long as it's not in our apartment because honestly, there's no way of stopping her if she wanted to. It's too much of a hassle to be of a control freak.
Every month, I send her 5000 plus gifts from wherever I've been, which isn't too much. So basically, I'm paying for her to house sit the apartment and for her time whenever I head to Guangzhou. She would also fly here to shanghai whenever I ask her to if I needed her companionship.

When SNG was an option, I never liked the idea of using my phone. I called directly. SNG never had my phone number. They had my last name for the 24 hours I was there but that was it.
I am careful so I would go the 4 start route myself. Save the er nai money and stay in nice places when you screw for the difference.

Judging by the way these ladies were dressed, it's pretty clear that there was more than a back rub on offer. I didn't have time to confirm this, but I have to say, it's been a couple of years at least since I've seen such open advertising anywhere in Shanghai. Could things finally be lightening up?

I live in Shanghai since 10 years. If you have been to J&M more than 2 years ago, then be prepared for the following changes:
* under 2000/ LT the ladies will ignore you, at least till 3 am.
* the old party times are gone. Since the Vietnamese took over, step by step J&M became pure contact locations; it is all about "how much" and immediate "you take me hotel?"
* the majority of men now are Chinese as their other fun places have been closed down (by the way: they are the reason for the increased pricing).
I personally go there very rarely now (while it was my center of enjoyment a few years ago). The good times are gone.

You can read about my experiences with it on the Singapore forum under the seeking arrangement thread title. In short, I don't do it anymore because it is a pain in the ass, and there is also the usual drama that often comes with any mistress or GF. Otherwise, just go to fancy bars and pick up a girl, or just ask out a girl that you already know and like. I also did this, mostly when I first moved to China many years ago. If you want to up the odds, when you walk into an MP, just ask for a pretty girl. They will get the message. One time, the manager understood my meaning and took me aside and told me there was no happy massage at their place, and so I walked out. Another way to up the odds is to pick the most expensive massage on the menu. One time, I picked the 336 option, and the mamasan whispered to me that I probably want the 398 off-menu option, and, well, I am glad that I took her suggestion.

From the airport arrival to departure, the government is watching closely, reining in overt "excess" like golf and designer brands, etc. It is not so much economic austerity (they just re-opened the floodgates on domestic credit) as it is social austerity and compliance enforcement. Witness the tax action against Fan and the Chief of Interpol (now former)! Whether this campaign by the "fun police" will last or be a phase that human lust and greed finally pierce, time will tell. As of now, it ain't fun.

..........I just spent 5 weeks in China and I encountered no hostility. My wife is Chinese and we stayed mostly with friends or relatives of hers. But even out in in the public when inquiring strangers asked her where I was from we did not encounter hostility. Some questioned me about what was happening. My sense that the Chinese, like their government view things from the long term. In the long term none of this will matter. China has other sources for pork, beef, dairy, corn and soybeans. I feel sorry for the midwestern farmers who have lost some business. In China, some manufacturing is already moving to other countries as incomes rise and the service sector evolves.
I did have occasional chances to monger while there and the working girls showed no signs that my money was not worth ignoring over a trade dispute.

I am an American and this last trip during the first week of July only had a couple of people who voiced their displeasure about the current situation with me. One was Chinese and the other was German. The Chinese guy was not happy about the stock market and the German guy was unhappy about trade. I listened politely and let them rant, (never agreed with them), and they both left the bar happy. I have been going to China since 2007 and have noticed a steady decline in the number of westerners since about 2013. In fact several guys I knew who lived and worked in China have left for Thailand or back to the USA.
My last visit to China was in April.

Red Rider.When I arrived in Beijing on June 19th I was fingerprinted. On that trip I made a short trip to Thailand and returned to China at Xiamen and was not fingerprinted again. Never was photographed at the hotel. That is something new.

I have visited Shanghai thrice this year and stayed at the Intercontinental Jing'an. They never took any photos of me or of any other guests, that were checking in alongside me.

Anyone I'm worried about China needs to be a arare of the following.
On entry get fingerprinted and photographed. Not why anyone is uncomfortable, happens in every country.
Upon check in to hotel get passport scanned, locals get photo ID and tracked. Foreigners must register with local police if not checked-in by hotel. Seems like Europe where they take your passport, what's the problem they need to know who is where.
Walking around get photographed and tracked if you at a person of interest out of the billions there and tens of millions of visitors.
Use WiFi or phone or social media, everything monitored and possibly censored real time.
Simple rules, don't break the prevailing law and or transgress an area of law enforcement focus. When things change need to be aware and adjust before enforcement starts. It's orettu clear what not to do and when and you monitor the climate.

Went back and got a different older provider. Again, very good HJ. These old providers may have been giving HJs for over 20 years now, so they really know what to do. Masseuse was attractive and petite, mid- to late- thirties (No. 6). She gave a decent massage and could tell from amount of attention she paid to massaging my butt that extras would be available. On flip, she offered he for a tip. I offered 200 and she accepted. Very good skills, with roaming allowed. She opened her top and unhooked her bra, and she didn't have a problem with roaming below (although with her uniform still on). I didn't try to go further.
A shower was available afterwards. I asked for her wechat info, but she didn't seem to understand (think she thought I was asking about using wechat to pay). Anyway, figured I'the be back and try to get her info then.
Returned this morning; just before 11 and they were just opening. Greeted by an auntie; looked at menu and selected 60 min oil massage for 198. She did the massage, and I (correctly) assumed it would be veggie. This was OK, as she gave a very good, strong massage that I needed after being in airplanes for 30 hrs in the past 5 days.
At payment, the lady behind the desk suggested I try the 258 massage next time I come by. Picked up a card so I could message ahead of next visit, but only has a landline. No mobile or wechat. I may try to call next time and test my very limited Chinese.
Overall good experience and looks like the 258 option is the way to go.

Every time there is an important event the authorities will polish the whole city, getting rid of deviant activities like ours. The local Shanghai Daily (Shine. Cn) is now daily overflowing with Import Expo related articles such as introduction of NEV taxis with high quality drivers, food inspections etc. You get the idea. Let's not forget that in the current trade war with US, China wants to show the world that it is open for business so no efforts will be spared to make a good impression. Unfortunately low key P4P will also get scrutiny, so be careful next few weeks.
On a positive note : the Nanjing Lu scammers will also get the 'memo'...

Walked along Weifang Lu (near crossing Pudong South Rd) and it seems that all MPs have finally disappeared after hanging on since the start of the crackdown. There used to be around 6 of them in close proximity and they have now been converted to other functions or are stripped bare. Same for nearby Laoshan Lu. Damn. This was such a good street with many lovely skilled girls. Will they ever return?

I arrived 3 days ago in shanghai. I didn't dare to go to saunas or massage places, just had incall service, I went to some KTV, didn't take the girls back, just banged them in the restroom for 1.5 k tip, because the organizer of the KTV party suggested me, if I wanted overnight, it was better to go to the girls house and not back to my hotel room and I didn't like very much the idea.
For the entire month of November, it will be very windy and even KTV will close down (the naughty ones) for one month.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't see any pretty girls, so I asked for No. 1, who is in her 40's and not petite, but gives a great strong massage and very good he. These days, whenever I go to any MP, whether I've been there or not, I tell the desk manager that I want a pretty girl so they immediately know what I'm there for. It has paid off. One time, the manager took me aside and said no happy massage is available and so I walked out, another time the manager smiled at me and told me to go with the 398 off-menu option instead of the one that I asked for and it was worth it. Now I've read of some other MPs around this area, could you give me an update on them?
- 1565 Huashan Lu: Is the HJ nowadays included in the 258 Lingham massage or does is require additional tips? If yes, how much?
- 250 Yuyuan: Do you have some more information about that? - Price / Offer (mainly interested in HJ, not FS / What to choose, etc.

That's just to convince the Embassy where you got your visa from, that you are an upstanding citizen that has planned his trip carefully. They might, before you got your visa, have made a call to the hotel to confirm your reservation. You have to go to the police station within 24 hours, regardless of that. However, hotels will inform the police for you, if you are staying with them. If you are not staying in a hotel, you must go to the nearby police station yourself to get a 'temporary residence' form.
I don't think the hotel will call the police if you did not show up. The hotel will call you however to ask why you didn't check in, and charge you with reservation costs; assuming you did make a reservation. If you didn't; they couldn't care less.
So again, by Chinese law, you have to inform the police within 24-hours of your arrival where your temporary residence is. So even though your attitude is "I don't want anything to do with that" . These days, I definitely would not skip this!
If I were you; I would check in the hotel; and then just stay with the woman in her apartment. Since you said it's a mid-level hotel, I assume it's not a 5-star hotel. So I wouldn't be too eager to bring a working girl there. Unless you know her well enough that you can easily pass her off as your girlfriend.
Another of my favorite MPs closed a few weeks ago, and on my last visit to check up had its interior stripped down. It used to be a Hao Di Fang on Zhangyang Road, near the Century Ave Metro (you can see the wayback archive of SNL to see more details). A couple of years ago it changed to e-Health Massage, and I always found it to be a good deal: they had a special back massage for 168 where the girl would walk on your back, and then give you a footjob for 1 or 2 extra Maos (sometimes free). Not a bad deal for the location.
We'll see what happens after refurbishment is finished, but I expect it will turn legit. It seems there is a big effort to clean up Pudong.

If you don't stay at the hotel but choose to stay at a private home, you have to go to the police with the owner (if she is) or her rental contract to state you'll stay there.
Registering is a rather simple process and it should be done within the first 2 days of your arrival. However if you choose not to follow the law and get controled or involved in any kind of event where they'll check your ID (accident, fight, whatever) you'll be fined several thousand RMB and a mention will be put on your file in the police station.

Several times I've booked hotels for a few days or a week and only showed up days and not spent the night. Never questions.I agree with this. In fact, I did this recently when I went to Beijing last week.

The ones that have reopened are now super-bright and no longer look like the shady unmarked storefronts of old. Whether or not this is actually the case or not I have no clue; it's entirely possible they've just gone the route of the veg places where you need to know how to ask for more. Case in point: the North Shaanxi spot is open again, but looks nothing like before. Anyone daring enough to scout it out?

In general; (visible) public places where a lot of girls gather are the least safe. Manhattan's closed for about two weeks for a reason. A lot of massage parlors closed for a reason.
The safest option is still; don't do anything. First next safest are independent girls, without an agent; whether it by QQ or WeChat; who don't work at a public place where raids might happen.

Tip: for those who have difficulty locating the girls here is my modus of operandi:
1. If the girl has both WC and QQ, contact them via WC;
2. If no WC listed on their ads, contact via QQ and ask for their WC, most girls have both. In fact they all have two phones: one for P4P and one for their regular lives;.
3. After obtaining their service card (listing main nearby cross road and services) usually via a photo, ask them to write in a separate WC / QQ message the crossing. Now you can copy / paste the address in Google translate, which does not work with the photo;
4. When near the main crossing (often near a subway exit), use WC location sharing (uses detailed Baidu maps not Google) which displays the girls location in detail so you can just walk there;
5. Clear the last hurdle (exact floor of the buidling / security code) and presto: a nice SYT waiting for you :)

WC has an inbuilt translator, but these translators (incl. Google) can not "read" a photo, so that's why you have to ask for a written address in a message. You can only scan a photo using Google translate by using a separate phone hovering over the first phone with the photo. But this does not work very well. Another tip is to use Google since it can display the pinyin translation which is way more accurate than the English, of course you need to be able to read pinyin, but it can help a lot. Also, rather than copy / paste each text item, Google has the option (in desktop mode) to translate a whole page in one go.
Perhaps I should have paid more attention during my Chinese classes...LOL.

A few remarks:
- photos are always low quality (smartphone taken) and that is perhaps on purpose. In any case subtract 1 - 1.5 points for photoshopping (Meitu etc). Actually I do not pay much attention to these photos because of this, in some cases the girl looked worse and in some cases they looked better. Also, the comments on their "fan" pages are quite useless IMHO, most comments are from guys who have not met the girls in question, so they only comment on doctored photos.
Once I chose a girl whose photos showed a cute cosplay type (slim and bubbly). She turned out to be rather plump and very homely, ordinary. As a counter gesture I gave her some good pounding. Tip: don't focus on the face in the photo but on the hands and feet cause they are usually not altered and can show if the girl is slim or plump.

Google Translate App *can* load a photo (or screenshot) from your album (once in camera part of google translate, click on icon in lower left corner to load album). This is very useful for translating Chinese apps (most don't allow copy-paste).
