To be more precisely, it is to the left of that exit (at the right side of the exit is Pasaraya Grande). A bank (BRI?) is on the corner and next to it is The Club. Hardly any sign, but look for the Bali Hai (beer) sign. It is the entrance to the bar. Ask for the owner, since you would like to rent an apt for a longer period. After being given the bracelet/locker key I proceeded to the spa section. It contains of two pools, some gym equipment, and a dry sauna. Relaxed in the hot pool for a while, end then went for a shower. The next station is the theater room which actually is a lounge including the GRO desk. She informed about the available packages, and I opted for the 'Butterfly all in' one. It consists of body massage, cat bath and FJ for 90 minutes in a VVIP room.

Your masseuse is selected by the booking girl. Thanks for your post. What you described is not normal behavior at Kartika, and the tip amount has definitely not gone up to 200,000 rupiah! My guess is that you ended up with one of the few bad/greedy girls working there, who must have been having a bad day or severe financial pressures in her life.

Whenever a situation like this happens, don't be afraid to complain to the mamasan (as you did) - they will usually do their best to fix the situation. I've visited Kartika at least 70 or 80 times over the last five years, and only had one experience as bad as yours. I immediately complained to the mamasan and they waived the room fee on the spot, without my even asking. Not only that, when I came back 5 days later, I learned that that particular girl was no longer working there, that Kartika management had fired her. It's been a long time since I've been to Jakarta and after some recent bad times overall in my life I decided to take a break in Jakarta. Took the KLM flight to Jak coz I wanted to try the Boeing 777-300 planes that I've heard so much. Nice & simple journey and indeed big difference between planes of AirAsia and KLM, comfort and service, in my case was worth every rupiah coz the flight fare @ RM370 was cheaper than AA for last minute flight booking. Glad I booked KLM coz last minute I had a meeting rescheduled and even though I had check in online, I was lucky enough to change th flight with a normal fee of RM100 @ USD29, now no way are you going to get your $ back when your flight leaves in 8 hours from AA!

As I tried to stay in few apartments but after the bombing most apartments have had their apartments rental price raised and since I have corporate rate at the new Akmani Hotel right in the middle of town I said why not? This was to be my humble abode for the next 8 days and a good & strategic place to stay!

The bars will shut early on Thursday night (by early I mean about 8 or 9 pm so to all intents and purposes they needn't bother opening) all the bars will be shut on Friday with business as usual resuming on Saturday. This would appear to wipe out a sizeable chunk of your trip, my suggestion would be to work the phones now to line up any old contacts you may have or to collect as many numbers as possible on Wednesday night with promises to call them during the shut down. It's not like Idul Fitri where the girls leave town, they will be around but somewhat harder to locate.

Good subject for a discussion. I have frequently avoided discussing price and like you I find 'I will do X for $Y' negotiations a little distasteful. If you are both *sure* you understand each other the 'no disussion of price' strategy can work very well.

I think it needs a few things in place to work - a girl who isn't too mercenary for a start, and a guy who can make the girl feel confident he knows what is 'fair reward' in the circumstances and she'll be 'seen right' at the end of the encounter.

I've often gone the no price discussed route in Singapore and BKK without any problems. Where I'm careful is where expectations on either side of the deal

I monger in all the capital cities in SE Asia and this is my approach exactly, Bulai69. China is an exception - everyone knows the prices and sticks to it, not a yuan more, not a yuan less.

For example, KTVs are 2-5-8 (RMB200 for sitting, RMB500 for ST, RMB800 for LT), etc.

The second thing that I need to say is that my own Indonesian is pretty basic - it will suffice for taxi's and restaurants, but I am a long way from fluent. With that disclaimer though, I have the impression that "casual Indonesian" . . . as in the sort of usage between friends, especially friends who are planning to fuck each other (grin) . . . is pretty different from "formal Indonesian".

Using "Anda" for you and "Saya" for me is not wrong, strictly speaking . . . and it is at least current usage - unlike "Ye Olde Englishe" would compare to contemporary slang and usage. I don't think I have ever heard a poon-possessor refer to me as "anda" - they always say "kamu" (same meaning as "anda", but not so formal). And although saya might be used from time-to-time, I most often hear "aku" or "gue" (similar meaning as "saya", but less formal). Anda seems to be reserved for situations where deep respect is intended - hardly the situation when you plan to fuck a female for funds . . . laughing now.

A massive thank you to forum members who post substantive information. Before my first visit to Jakarta I read back a couple of years of posts, making clippings. Blok M was so-so, the area felt dodgy at night, I was followed into Top Gun by some punk who was finally ejected by management when he got aggresive after about half an hour of telling him I don't need his company. Then a scrawny mute girl latched on to me like a leech. The talent is so-so.

Kota is well-stocked with efficient pick & fuck places. Walk from Hayam Wuruk towards Lokasari Plaza and look for big neon down the smaller streets to your left. The setup at Penjay is rather similar but trade is more brisk and more seedy, and a bit cheaper. Look for Asian Rain's excellent directions.

TC sounded like a fun place but a couple of months ago reports said that it wasn't worth going anymore. Is that still the case or is it now back to business as usual in TC?

Jakarta is a big city and unless you are well traveled it may be overbearing.

Depending on what you are looking for, here are a couple of tactics:

For unashamed unattached non stop banging till you drop:
- Stay at Mercure Resko rather than Hotel Travel - bit dearer, still cheap, much nicer, free internet, walking distance from Stadium, Bluebirds right out the front 24/7;
- Walk down to TCs (still worth checking out), Sierra, Bintang Mawar, and of course - Hotel Travel. You're young enough to cover the distance;
- Finish the night at Stadium, the one stop shop for, well anything..
- Walk back to sleep (maybe!)

And you still can follow this tactic for a more social experience:
- Stay at Atlet Century Park (more expensive though);
- Walk down to X2 in Plaza Senyan or Red Square, with your ages and looks a freebie (or close to it) with a pretty hot girl is certainly a possibility;
- Wander through Plaza Senayan or Senayan City. PS has been a successful hunting spot before for me;
- You are ten minutes from CJs, BATs, Blok M, and a bit longer to Mistere at Ritz Carlton for more possibilities.

And the following works for both (but better in conjunction with tactic two):
- Hit Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, Tagged and DateInAsia (in that order) looking for Indonesians to meet when you are there. Facebook is in front for me at the moment..
- If you have a BlackBerry, make sure it is unlocked. Buy a Telkomsel Simpati SIM, load it with 200,000 ASAP, SMS 333 with 'Reg BB' and then 'BB On' and fire up YM and Facebook (and BB messenger). Update your status as to where you are regularly (assuming you don't have any stalkers yet). With luck, your thumbs will stop feeling sore about a month after you get home. The same with a few other body parts;
- Google translator and Google maps (with GPS) on the phone are also highly useful! Especially when locating places for the first time.
- The above should work for other phones if you can get a data pack, but I haven't tried it, and everyone is on BlackBerry in Indonesia anyway;
- Ask everyone for their phone number, and keep sms'ing them.

Like I said, you lucky sod. I'm luckier though, I visit before you!

Just came back from a week in Jakarta for business, but managed to fit in a bit of fun too.

Hit CJ's a couple of nights at the open and hung around for a while to see what was wandering in. The early pickings are pretty hard core, but at around 10:30 some more suitable partners make the scene.

The bar itself is pretty expensive, so if you are paying your own way you probably want to go for the bottle or nurse the drinks. Great band as usual, so the time is well spent.

Found one 25 year old girl who was well worth the 600k we settled on and I added 100 more to make it 700.

Thanks for your post. What you described is not normal behavior at Kartika, and the tip amount has definitely not gone up to 200,000 rupiah! My guess is that you ended up with one of the few bad/greedy girls working there, who must have been having a bad day or severe financial pressures in her life.

Whenever a situation like this happens, don't be afraid to complain to the mamasan (as you did) - they will usually do their best to fix the situation. I've visited Kartika at least 70 or 80 times over the last five years, and only had one experience as bad as yours. I immediately complained to the mamasan and they waived the room fee on the spot, without my even asking. Not only that, when I came back 5 days later, I learned that that particular girl was no longer working there, that Kartika management had fired her. I'm not sure if that was a direct result of my complaint, or if several customers had complained, but the bottom line is that no place will put up with girls who hurt business.Dear MS,

Tanamur was great fun indeed. I think that it's also the first place I've ever been to in JKT. This was the pre-internet days and there was no way to know where to go when you arrived at destination, except by word of mouth, and Tanamur already had a solid reputation. Atmosphere was so good that I had one of biggest shock of my life ! Anyway for me JJ had more charm ...the balinese backyard, the outdoor billiards and MTV screen, the baroque decoration, and the elegance of the old dutch mansion that hosted all that was a great blend indeed. And most girls were NOT interested by your wallet, but just to have hot and short flings with equally fun-loving foreigners. I think I've spent hundreds of nights there !!!

BTW ..... who remember that JJ was in the late 80s, after its opening, the trendiest place in town, packed with celebrities, models, jeunesse doree, ect .... they abandonned it after a few monthes (which is usual in JKT), until it became soon the place that we know, the best pick up spot and drinking hole (under one roof) on the planet, till 2002 when it went really downhill.

She then gets a call form a Malaysia number, saying the bag full of money is in KL, and she should come get it, but she must pay 4800 USD in fees for transport and security. She tells them she cannot come up with that money. The friend then calls and begs her. He is in jail at SIN airport. She tells him she will try to come up with the money. Somehow she manages to come up with 3,000 USD, and calls the “Malaysia agent” who informs her that if all she has is 3,000, she can just send it, and not bother to come. They will then return the bag to her friend.

The scam, or a variation of it, is very common, how many are hooked is impossible to say but it seems to be getting more prevalent.

The MO is always similar. A girl on an online chat site is hit upon, often by a guy who puports to be from UK, Australia, USA etc. He spends a period of time, usually a few weeks, flattering, developing the relationship and assessing his targets financial worth. Single working women, 30+ with middle and up income are often targeted. Just like us mongers, the scammers know this group is often grateful for the attention.

Then comes the hit. Common variations are the unsolicited gift to the lady (diamonds, cash) which is sent by some fictitious but plausible sounding courier and the 'stuck in transit' line you described.

Either way, the girl is asked for customs or other fees to release the gift or for cash to help her wealthy new friend. Fees to be paid by Western Union and subject to heavy discounting if the target baulks at the initial amount.

The majority of the fund requests are from Malaysia. Targets could be anywhere but Singapore, Thailand, China and Indonesia are popular.

I know a girl or lady who had organised her engagement with one of these scamsters. He came up with some story and she went to Malaysia to rescue him before the engagement and got money given to guys who posed as cops. She announced a great engagement in a 5 star hotel, all with a fantastic agenda. And this guy, a self proclamed Britisher does not turn up. And then she never heard of him again. Finally she married an aged bule from Indonesia and has now settled in Connecticut.

I've been in jakarta for 3 days now. It's been a joy so far except for one little disappointment.

As usual, I surveyed the forum two weeks in advance. And was drawn to the idea of online dating. So I signed up with two websites recommended here. Met few girls online but got much involved with a pretty girl. So I focused my attention to her and neglected the others as I didn't really have much time to spare anyway. So, we exchanged phone numbers. Talked few times on the phone. CJ: as trendy and classy as it was built up in here. Loads of girls and freebies. Nice music. A bit pricy I must say. Girls don't approach you most of the time so you have to get up and approach them. And expect some rejections as well. First girl I approached, was tall (about 180 cm, thin, and elegant). On those dating sites, if their profile says something like "Stunning_TS", it's probably best to avoid that one if you aren't into lady boys. I would think if that one was so up front with you, there must have been some reference to them being a transsexual in their profile. The site with the most lady boys seems to be dateinasia. So probably best to avoid that one if you are new in town and have trouble telling the difference.

Actually, I don't see the need to use any of those sites. It's safer just to go to CJ's and meet a girl in person. You can't be sure what you are getting on those sites.

Then comes the hit. Common variations are the unsolicited gift to the lady (diamonds, cash) which is sent by some fictitious but plausible sounding courier and the 'stuck in transit' line you described.

Either way, the girl is asked for customs or other fees to release the gift or for cash to help her wealthy new friend. Fees to be paid by Western Union and subject to heavy discounting if the target baulks at the initial amount.

The majority of the fund requests are from Malaysia. Targets could be anywhere but Singapore, Thailand, China and Indonesia are popular.I'm in Malaysia and very common to hear of these scams. Many of my "freebie dates" (being in the right market mix) have been hit on this way. The smart ones insist to talk to the guy who is offereing to send the diamonds etc. They then wonder why a guy who in his pic has blue eyes white skin and blond hair talks like a Nigerian. Thats when they realise its a scam attempt.

Kelapa Gading is an area of Jakarta. Like Menteng or Kuningan. There is only one Kelapa Gading. There's a huge mall in that area called Mal Kelapa Gading (I believe) and Sumo massage place is in that area as well. Many times I've jumped in a taxi and told them to take me to Mal Kelapa Kading and they take me directly there with no questions asked. I find I can't ask them to take me to Sumo because they never know it. But it's not far from that mall, so I just have them take me to the mall and direct them from there. However, I have not been to this King Cross place with the 50 or so naked women dancing yet.

Checked out JC (under Mulia hotel) on both Christmas evenings. 25 was very quiet, 26 much better. Place has western price level, which is not a surprise since the Mulia is one of the top hotels of Jakarta. Girls were both nice but nothing really special, 20 and 23 years. Service was not bad but nothing special.

Also checked the Plaza M shopping Mall. The day before Christmas there were free lancers walking around, but on 25 and 26 not one.

But got a few phone nrs of shop girls. Saw only three other caucasian guys in the 3 days I visited that place.

Plaza Indonesia: inside saw no WG's. Shop girls are more distant, but still got a phone nr of a young cutie.

My friend and I moved to the Mercure Rekso hotel, in a diferent part of the city to check out the scene there. Here you are very close to Stadium, Kartika and more of these places.

Good hotel but nothing special. Girls no problem. To find Kartika en Stadium:
with you back to the hotel entrance turn left. Walk a few streets and on your left you see in a small alley at the end the Kartika sign. Stadium is a few streets further. Just ask around.

Stadium: been there two times now. On first floor: food and bar Second floor karaoke (empty when we checked), 3rd floor (see later) and 4th floor dance club. The dance club is nice, many WG's but so dark that you hardly see what you "buy".

On the 3rd floor is the brothel. Many nice girls, good rooms. We took 4 times a girl and paid IDR 30.000 (roughly USD 30) for 1 hour girl plus VIP room. Good service, beautiful girls, no complaints!

However, it seems that mall is closed now because they had a fire or something recently involving the generators. Try out Hotel Astika , along Mangga Besar Raya No. 76 ( near to Oasis SPA) . Clean and near to all actions. I've tried the cheaper Business Deluxe at Rp 256.5 K , but find it small and but the Executive rooms may suit your taste at Rp 315 K.

The answer for both of you is the same - go to Kartika for their soapy massage. Ask for Cindy or Neneh (or both together); if they're not available, I'm sure you'll find one or two other girls to your liking.

On the same alley is Berlian Spa, ask for Inna, she can also give a soapy massage (make sure you tell her before you go upstairs to the room), and she's lots of fun to be with.

For Young German, the Stadium Night Club usually only gets raided around the Muslim religious holidays (Ramadan, Eid al Fitri a/k/a Lebaran, and Eid-al-Adha), which don't occur again until early August and afterwards. But there's no guarantee that the Stadium won't be raided today or tomorrow. For Shari Oz, the Somerset Citra is very girl-friendly, however the in-house spa at the Somerset Citra is most likely a massage-only place, especially in the spa itself. If the girl comes upstairs to your apartment, you might get some action, depending on the girl, but I wouldn't count on it.

total bullshit. the top floor is much better. smll bar ahead as you enter, then to the right beach chairs to lounge under the skylights. opposite the beachchairs, little divan enclosures with cloth draped around. just beyond the beachchairs, three pools (hot, warm, icy) and steam room and sauna. lounge, have drinks, order food, take it easy. any time you like, ask for a lineup. get the choice of about 6 nationalities, round about between 1.8 and 2.x million. your choice dons a bikini and joins you in the pool, steam room, mops your brow, etc etc. then go down to the room, standard operating procedure follows. (afterwards she gives you a card to fill in how much tip you want to give her on top of the fee, hmf.)

My experience in Indonesia is that a cash donation (i.e. bribe) can always help when one is confronted by police in a situation that's not truly criminal, such as a traffic stop or a spa bust. Most cops would rather let a foreigner go than go through the bother of busting them, plus they are underpaid and would prefer the money anyway.

It might cost you up to 500,000 rupiah (US $50) to have the cop let you walk away from a massage parlor raid, but that's better for you than getting arrested.

Any thoughts from my fellow Seniors - Menteng? bulai69? Smoothy? et al...

P.S. I'm adding this afterwards - the above scenario is one more reason why one shouldn't walk around town with a lot of money in their pockets. If you're inside a place like Stadium, and it gets busted, the cops would probably want whatever is left in your wallet as a bribe to let you go. So if you have 500,000 rupiah, then, then that's what they'd get, but if you have 2 or 3 million, you risk losing all of it for the cops to let you go.

What made me add this comment was that I've just remembered a situation I was in nearly 20 years ago in a corrupt African country, where I was someplace that got busted and I had to empty my wallet (which had $175 in it) in order to be let go. Since then, I've always walked around with minimal cash - safer that way.

My experience in Indonesia is that a cash donation (i.e. bribe) can always help when one is confronted by police in a situation that's not truly criminal, such as a traffic stop or a spa bust. Most cops would rather let a foreigner go than go through the bother of busting them, plus they are underpaid and would prefer the money anyway.

It might cost you up to 500,000 rupiah (US $50) to have the cop let you walk away from a massage parlor raid, but that's better for you than getting arrested.

Any thoughts from my fellow Seniors - Menteng? bulai69? Smoothy? et al...

P.S. I'm adding this afterwards - the above scenario is one more reason why one shouldn't walk around town with a lot of money in their pockets. If you're inside a place like Stadium, and it gets busted, the cops would probably want whatever is left in your wallet as a bribe to let you go. So if you have 500,000 rupiah, then, then that's what they'd get, but if you have 2 or 3 million, you risk losing all of it for the cops to let you go.

What made me add this comment was that I've just remembered a situation I was in nearly 20 years ago in a corrupt African country, where I was someplace that got busted and I had to empty my wallet (which had $175 in it) in order to be let go. Since then, I've always walked around with minimal cash - safer that way.

The only time I had to pay was when I walked through a glass door at Pasaraya Grande. There was no sign that the door could not be used. (No first-aid kit either.) I was thinking of sueing the management for not having tempered glass like demanded by the law and the lack of a warning to avoid that particular door. But, the head of the security refered to the outcome of a recent trial of a murder in the bar of the Hilton hotel by a son of an ex army general. So, I paid to avoid more costs. :(

Guys, save yourself the Taxi grief and get the bar to call you one, they all will and then you can keep on enjoying yourself while until it arrives. It will cost 25,000 iDR and if the hotel is close then arguably you are paying more than on the meter. So what, its a late night tip for the driver. You may be asked to stump up a couple of thousand for the "parking" privilege or else the Driver will pay it. If your bill is over the 25,000 sum you should reinburse the driver out of courtesy as they get flak from the dodgy taxis in the street.

I experienced the same last time at Top Gun when a local Sheriff outside demanded parking fee when a Bluebird picked me up, which I found ridiculous, so I told to just drive. Jakarta, Jakarta! My first visit in a while.

Before setting off I chatted with a few girls on Date In Asia. Only one actual psycho, a few on the make, but a surprising number of genuine people looking to meet someone a bit different without having to line up in one of the meat (sic) markets that readers of this forum like me tend to frequent. After a while it narrowed down to two who seemed both interested and interesting. One obviously gets off on having a bule b/f as a fashion accessory, which is fine by me. The other is a single parent who can't get out much, wants some attention only a man can give, but doesn't want to get entangled with a local guy. Also fine by me.

A tip to anyone using DIA. All the girls I talked to started out highly sceptical. There are obviously loads of guys who claim to be one thing and later on turn out to be something entirely different. So start honest and stay honest; otherwise, if you do find a genuine friend, you've screwed it up before it ever got started. And webcams are a no-no with anyone genuine; if you ask they will have alarm bells ringing, if they offer it's almost certainly going to end up as a commercial arrangement.

Between times, I looked in on T&C around midnight and the place was worse than dead. Tried out Oasis Spa opposite Lokasari Plaza around midday. It was quiet. Only a few girls. But what put me off was the tatty run-down feel of the place. I can cope with seedy, which Melawi Floor 6 certainly is. Early evening and the place was knee deep in girls but no customers. Fixed price of IDR 450k with tip at your discretion. The girl I picked seemed delighted just to have a customer. Lintas Melawi next door is no more. Pity, I liked that place because you could actually dance.

CJ's at the Mulia was busy. I went in my capacity of fashion accessory, so only window shopping, and there was plenty to look at. The band was bad even by Jakarta standards. I was praying for them to end their set; then the DJ turned out to be even worse! Tiga Pulah at Le Meridien was similar for talent and rather better for entertainment.

Did I read somewhere in the Forum that Top Gun was going downhill? No way from what I saw; it was just as magnificently sordid as ever. Being already well looked after, my Plan A had been to have a beer in each of the bars along the street for old times sake and then home for an early-ish night, but I never made it out of Top Gun. Among various Close Encounters of the Jakarta Kind, I chatted to a woman who could have been even older than me, which takes some doing (being older than me I mean). I am certain the massage she offered would have been intense and done my back and other parts the world of good. Got hotly and repeatedly propositioned by a girl young enough to be my granddaughter, with the option of her friend as well as a package deal. And then I caught a dazzling smile from a girl who can only be described as genuinely beautiful. When she turned out to be funny and intelligent as well, Plan A flew out the window.

Maybe I just didn't notice on previous visits, but there seems to be many more girls working the streets. I spotted a regular line up all along Harum Waruk and also on the streets around Jl Paletehan. I wasn't shopping so I can't say anything about the terms of trade.

We told the guy about 20 times to stop following us because we were not going to buy any drugs from him, but he was persistent and kept following us asking us over and over to buy drugs from him. We finally reached the main road (Hayam Waruk) and waived a blue bird taxi down. When the taxi stopped to pick us up, the drug dealer/parking guy asked us for a tip. We asked him "a tip for what? for bugging us the entire long walk to the main road trying to sell us drugs? no thanks". Then he said he wanted 10,000 rupiah "parking money". We told him we weren't about to give him parking money for a taxi from the main road that we flagged down ourselves. He then started pounding on the top of the taxi screaming for parking money. The taxi driver would not drive away, so we got out and asked the guy what his problem was and told him he didn't have the right to any money from us or from that taxi driver. The guy was only about 5 feet tall and probably weighed less than 60kg, but the taxi driver was terrified and gave the guy the 10k rupiah. In no way did that loser deserve any money at all. We ended up giving the taxi 10k over the meter at the end of the ride, but the principle of the taxi driver giving that guy money still bugs me to this day.

Another example is when my own driver was with me at an electronics shop in north Jakarta. He came into the shop with me. As we were walking out, my driver saw a car about to leave and there were no "parking" guys in the area so he ran up to the car and asked for parking money. And the car gave it to him! What the hell? I told my driver I thought that was unethical and if he ever did it again I'd find a new driver. His reply was "money parking" and he looked at me as if it wasn't a problem. But I asked him again to never ask anyone for parking money while he's driving me around. We then backed out and left without paying any parking since there was nobody around to ask for it.

Absolutely agree, not only that the taxis parked in the street charge rediculous prices, but some are also technically rather unsafe. Order a Blue Bird at the bar, give 2000 to the parking guy and 5000 to the security guy of the bar that warns you when the taxi has arrived and you will alway have a good treatment in the future.

I have been a couple of times in Jkt and payed 500 000 LT for a single night with a Blok M lady, which was fine with me. Next time I plan to have one of the girls stay with me for a longer time, say five days. What is the custom about the fee, 5 x 500k ?

Here's part of a posting I did a few years back on the same subject on another site which I have just dug up. Forget the prices, but apparantly the same, same shit happens.

Nuisance Taxi drivers

Went everywhere by taxi day and night and only encountered ass holes trying to intimidate me and rip me off when I was in the company of girls I had picked up from any bar away from the usual 4 or 5 star hotel venues.

This only happens at night of course and don't expect any help or support from the girls with you.

My worst experience was coming out of the Night Club at the Hotel Menteng 2, central Jakarta. From being angry to being scared shirtless and then just feeling plainly humiliated, when we arrived at the hotel boy did I make him wait for his money! I think the bastard was told to move on twice while I took my time getting his money together inside the hotel.

Definitely had no problems using Blue bird and Silver Bird but it's not always possible as Smoothy pointed out.

One white colored taxi I used another time seriously stank of sick and made me too smell all night and another taxis meter I used was obviously fixed and I ended up paying three times the amount. It's the luck of the draw I'm afraid.

If you are using taxis a lot in Jakarta, and can be bothered, book a Blue Bird taxi by phone and "pay the extra dollar'' in way of an added supplement booking fee but by even doing that will not solve the ass holes on the streets laying in wait for people like us.

Or, don't be adventerous at all in Jakarta and just stick to the good tried and tested 5-star mongering places like BATS, CJS, Tiga Pulah or the Misture? At the Ritz carlton where there will always be a Blue or even better Siver Bird Taxi waiting outside. But for the Taxis, bad traffic and annoying Ramadan. What a damn good mongering place Jakarta is. In response to your earlier reports, my post follows. (This, by the way, is my virgin post to ISG. I'm losing my virginity right now).

It sounds like what was at work in the nasty-taxi posts was the force of Jakarta gang life and 'premanism. ' Going back to the 1940s, Indonesian cities have been informally organized along gang lines; the Indonesian security forces. Police and military. Have actually embraced the criminal gangs as a way of controlling them.

If you ask me (at over 10 years in Jakarta), the only reason a taxi driver would be scared of a scrawny, under-60 kg guy selling drugs and asking for tips was the fear the seller was a 'Preman, ' or petty gangster. Such preman are the footsoldiers of the criminal gangs sponsored once by military officials moonlighting, and in the 'reformasi' era, by local police chief. The police have done well out of democracy.

It's not really a matter of who deserves what. How many ISG members 'deserve' a $50 tryst with a 21 year-old woman? It's a matter of what you can get away with.

Now, yes, many say it's corrupt and evil that the police collaborate with organized crime. But the arrangement is one reason the sex trade isn't more violent than it is in Indonesia.

As for dealing with Preman: they're often scrawny losers with no authority and can be safely ignored. Taxi drivers may not know the area such preman are working in and are playing it safe because they may be held liable for damage done to their vehicles, depending on the company. Cheaper to stump up Rp. 10, 000 than deal with a Rp. 100, 000 scratch.

But sex for sale has a price; violence has a price; everything has a price. Premanism, organized crime, and the cops or military is just a reality in Indonesia. Ignore it if you like, but there was that famous quote, "I struggled with reality for 50 years, and I finally overcame it."

On the nuisance taxis and preman:

Collusion is very common. The shitty taxi companies (you'll know them when you see them) often employ desperadoes. Their owners are sleazy semi-criminal businessmen who cut every corner to make a buck. Other than bluebird, ok companies are Express, Koperasi (green and orange), Dian, (blue and white), and Jakarta City. Blue Bird is still the best.

On the preman: the reason they can be skinny and malnourished but scary is they usually carry knives, work in groups, and have nothing to lose. They don't 'fight' as in square off and engage in some Marquis of Queensbury fisticuffs, they slash, stab, and run, or call all their friends. Going to jail isn't that big a problem: many of them, especially the ones clothed in tatoos, have done time already.

Bules and foreigners are usually given a longer leash than locals. Bules usually don't understand the deal and aren't worth the energy and likely confrontation. But if pushed, the knife may well come out. Bules have been stabbed in Blok M, for example. The Preman are often sad, broken, and of course stupid and uneducated. The 'Ayams' as the working girls are known locally, in places like Jl. Felatehan know all about Preman. They usually provide the muscle and security. Even if they do a bad job. At Blok M. Professional hookers (as opposed to Indonesia's enthusiastic amateurs), may pay 50 % or more of their takings to the pimp. It's the parastic pimps and Preman that help to create that dead-in-the-eyes look of women who've been on the game too long.

If you're into ethical mongering, it's worth thinking about the shady world of Preman and their police and military backers. You may want to boil with rage at the injustice. As I used to. But it won't make the arrangement go away. In fact, as Indonesia's cities get bigger, and the police get more powerful, premanism is probably going to grow.

Haven't contributed in a while, so thought I would try to give some practical advice.

It is normal to pay parking attendants 1-2K for their services. Indeed, these are 'preman' (gangsters), who work in collusion with the police. They are part of the same system that delivers young girls to you in the bars in Blok M and Kota, so it hardly seems reasonable to complain. Just pay, preferably with a smile. That's the Indonesian way.

Regarding taxis: if you can't speak Indonesian, use a bluebird or silverbird whenever possible. Otherwise, try saying: "tolong (please) pakai (use) argo (the meter), mas (brother)". Or you can just say 'argo' and the driver will understand what you mean. If you are ignored, just say the universally understood 'STOP' get out and find another taxi. If you want to be fancy, say 'berhenti', but 'stop' will work just fine.

Never, ever, lose your cool. Stay calm, smile, and speak Indonesian as best you can. "Macho" in Indonesia translates into relentless self control. Getting mad in the presence of a girl (even a kampung "ayam"-who almost always are supporting their families with their earnings) is most definitely low class. Remember to smile, even if insincerely, and trouble will rarely find you here.

Based on recent positive revievs about Tropical Spa close to ITC Roxy Mas, I and few friends when there to sample the menu.

Each to his own, but for me this was a miss. Quoted 500 k for ML. This form a 27 y o spinner with bad skin, and a bit too distanced for my liking. She did give a solid strong oil massage. Compared to Classic, Marioboro, etc this is bad value for money. Opted to pull out (pun intended), and save myself for the evening instead.

Staff was friendly, price levels for massage very reasonable. But price/performance not up to par with competition.

Most of the parking guys in Jl Palatehan are the Blue Shirted ones. They are, by and large fair enough and reasonable. They will look for a park for you, change your tyre or organize a push if the battery is flat, all for a fee of course. But they have memories and they are there every night, sometimes with their girls working the bars as has been pointed out. There is one "preman" who does not wear blue whom has the patch outside Mybar after about 11 pm. He can be a little bit offensive but still takes his 5 thousand and guides the car out. Its just part of the micro economy of the street. My only satisfaction with him is telling him to guide the car out before he gets his money. He does it with a smile now, but his initial approach is full of puffed up menace. Its my choice if I go there and if I choose to do so I go with flow. One more thing about taxis, Bluebird have a "budget" range called Gamya. Green cars, very clean, late model and courteous drivers. Cheaper from the airport than a Bluebird.

I am just leaving Jakarta after a two nights and one day and here are my impressions.

First of all in a previous post someone made a google map including many of the major venues. It was very helpful and here is the link:

I suggest printing out blow ups of various sections.

First night went to Top Gun which is inside the Block M complex. Took a taxi there, wandered around unable to find it and finally paid a cab driver 20,000 rupia ($2) to take me there. That saved me another 30 minutes of wandering around looking for it I'm sure.

Entered Top Gun and found a heaven of cute LBFM's dieing to have you take them home with you. I would say 80% of them were 9's in my book and I am fairly picky. Some I am sure were no older than 15 so check their ID's.

I decided to check out BATS which a guy I chatted with said it is a more "sophisticated crowd". As I was waiting for a cab outside a stunningly beautiful gal came out, and within one minute I decided why bother with another cab ride to another club when I have someone right here to cater to my needs.

Turns out she was 32, (could pass for 20), had a 5 year old kid, blah, blah. She later confirmed that some of the girls at Top Gun were as young as 15 so it wasn't just my opinion. She told me sending her kid to school costs 400K a month and that doesn't count supplies. She works in a salon washing hair during the day. Next day went to check out Lokasari Plaza where TC or Today Country is located. The plaza and TC has been extolled as a great place to find freelancers. Also 10 minutes away is the Hotel Travel which I wanted to check out.Got to TC around 3:30PM. Nothing happening and was told to come back at 5PM.

Went to Hotel Travel (again took a cab for a $1 ride to avoid taking an hour to find something that was a 10 minute walk). Entrance to the spa is on the left side. Search Hotel Travel in this forum to get more details. All I can say is that the quality was high, I was having a hard time trying to decide which hot 20 yo I was going to choose when a mamasan called one of her girls to close the deal. I was thinking that I wanted to look some more but this gal was as good as any of the young hotties so I figured to take the path of least resistance. Charge is 300K and tipped the girl 100K for an hour of pleasure.

Went back to Lokasari Plaza. There is a 110K cover (which buys you a well drink) and a chance to see all the women you don't want to see.

Of course the net result of that is whole generations of people, none of whom have ever done any work, "benefitting" from filthy hospitals where they join waiting lists to get on the waiting lists and a school system which turns out functional illiterates and where the only skill the teachers seem capable of imparting is how to put on a condom (a skill most of the pupils forget shortly after their twelfth birthday).

Here in Indonesia I get to choose which school my kid goes to, what they are taught while they are there, and even which teacher teaches them, the hospitals which charge me a fraction of my tax bill provide a superb service in spotlessly clean wards with doctors who see me when I ask them. I also get to choose which particular hard luck story in society to help out with financial assistance rather than have a Red Army sized bureaucracy forcibly remove a massive whack of my earnings on pain of jail time in order to shovel it willy-nilly at every loser and dead beat with a permanent hand out.

I know which "civilised" society I prefer.

Incidentally there is free basic education for all children in Indonesia. If your lady friend is paying 400k a month she has opted to send her son to a fairly decent private school (cheap here aren't they?). For some perspective, Shangri La is among the top five hotels in Jakarta, BATS' customers are well-heeled locals, wealthy ex-pats and rich foreign businessmen, my guess is that in a similar bar in New York or London or Los Angeles you'd also meet glamorous looking thirty-something women who also work as "beauticians/stylists/whatever" and who also are there to earn money to pay their kids' school fees.

Another work week in Jakarta, but managed to fit in some fun worth reporting.

Two visits to CJ's seeing as I was staying in the Mulia. Tuesday night was a sausage fest - far more men than women, although a number of the women were brought in as dates. A smattering of freelancers, mostly hanging around the inner bar seeing as the music was too loud for them. New band from all over and they were pretty good, but I would agree on the volume. Stayed until 10:30 or 11:00 but the sausage fest was not for me.

Had to do an emergency business trip back to the Big Durian. Work kept me busy all weekday nights, but finally on Saturday I manged to escape for some R&R. A fairly new place called King Cross in Kelapa Gading has gotten a lot of good reports in local web forums, so I decided to try it out.

Exact address is Komplek KOKAN Permata Kelapa Gading Blok C no. 9-12A, but just look for Delta Spa/King Cross/Sumo Shiatsu Spa signs cos all of them are in the same area.

Arrived around 2 p m. First the check-in reception. Then into the ground floor biljard room. There is a nightclub with strippers on the 3rd floor. Open from 8.30 p m to 3 a m. According to other reports it suppose to be wild. The afternoon selection of girls consisted of five cewek in pink uniforms. All young and at least three of them fitted with a C-rack. It seems 300,000 is the going rate for ST. How long do you get and how many pops on average? Is it accepted that (like Thailand for example) you will get 3 hours and two pops? Or is she out the door the minute the cap comes off?

Makes a big difference in deciding ST or LT. Again I RTFF didn't see this specifically.

Finally - othes have asked this here and on that Blok M site, but what is actually better? Blok M (Long Gun etc) or the other places in the north? Ronnie, you were there a bit early. I've noticed it also. Its like that at the bars across the street also. It picks up by 11pm.

ST. 300K. The girls will often ask for 500 or more in the bar. Just hold up 3 fingers; she'll take it. 300K is a weeks wages in jakarta.

As to time. It is one of the things on my laundry list. Run thru your laundry list with her in the bar (not in the taxi, or in your room, its too late then). This is not for everyone. Some gents are happy just grabbing her and heading off to the room. If you do that, you 'get what you get', not necessarily what you wanted. For instance, one girl gives you 2-3-4 hours in your room, multiple pops, and does not ask for a tip (nice!). Another girl gives you one pop, asks for a tip, and is out the door in 30 minutes. Well they have finally decided to allow the standard 30 Day VOA to be extended for another 30 days. You pay 25 USD again and need to go to the Immigration Office. Imagine the middlemen industry that will spring up over that palaver. The consequence of this is the dropping of the 7 Day Visa. Logic is a wonderful thing here in Indonesia.

Certainly agree with you there. It actually gave me a minor problem at BKK airport last year. The lady at imigration didn't like that they had 4 passport numbers registered on me in their system. But after 15 min I was let in to the country after having explained the fact to a smarter induvidual who also spoke better English.

Last night I went to “King Cross”, a place that was recommended a few posts back (#4242).

It is worth the trip. The first floor is a restaurant cafe/bar with a stage. The second floor has massage which closes at 11PM which is when I got there. The third floor is a big bar with stage. I walked into the third floor and was greeted by five beautiful young Indonesian charmers with massive racks dancing topless on stage. I just stood and took it all in for five minutes. Wow! I guess management likes major cleavage and there it was, five pair of bouncing and jiggling mammaries on stage. Can't beat a nice rack on a little Asian gal. Better when there is a room full of them and they are all available.

Post 4242 has the address. I am posting some pictures of the signs on the street. There are several buildings perpendicular to the street with several clubs. The building you want has white neon going up to the top on the side facing the street. It is closest to the Delta sign (which was not illuminated one night so I didn't see it until I went back the next day). There is also a Delta sign on the main street you turn off of so if you see just one big Delta sign, you are close but not quite there. Turn immediately (left from the way I came) and the three signs as shown in my photos are half a block down.

Have fun. Good place to hang out for drinks, looking and finding a hottie for a good time.

Also posting some pics of various girls from King Cross and Travel Hotel. Both places have high quality to choose from. King Cross you can hang out and eventually decide who to pick. Next night went back in the evening. Found out that the dancers aren't available for sex. Although I did have one jump on my lap, squirm around and ask for a drinkMantid, Thanks for your excellent report following which I went there myself. Its a long trek but definitely worth it. I enquired about the dancers and found that not all but some are available. Make friends with one of the waiters and he will advise you. For the ones that are available the dancing is 'advertising'.
