That's a good list if you live in Jakarta and are not much older than 30 years old.
For a 50 year old, one week visitor, that list is garbage.
Then again, it depends what you are looking for.

It's in the northern part of Jakarta. Backing the exit of Kota trainstation, turn left around the building. Proceed about 200 mtrs till the traffic lights. Sion's church is at the opposite corner. Turn right at the traffic lights, proceed about 500 mtrs, passing a.o. a Toyota dealer. A little further you will see a sign of Handayani Spa. Proceed about 15 mtrs, or better, 50 mtrs; enter the gate at your lefthand side. There they are!! Starting with MTR at the far end.
I think you should ask the driver beforehand if he knows what you're up to. Otherwise he can pull your leg in that long street. By heart I can recall 5 places in there that will serve our needs.

last week i was in a mood for a "normal" massage w/o any hanky-panky and since i had some business to fulfil at sultan hotel, i decided to take a brake at life spa, located at the lower ground.
arrived there, asked for massage and got a therapist namend elly, 25 yrs.

Keeping on the hotel massage theme... I had a massage at the Hotel Maharadja a few years ago. This is far from a 5 star hotel, in fact it's one of the cheaper hotels. I've been through the list on previous trips and some works, some dont. Kings Cross is an interesting pick up place but long way out.

What has happened since November? I went to the Blok on Fri and Sat night. Friday night was a shocker, good meal and beers at sporties, but the standard of the other bars was way below wot it used to be. D's place was just dead and the 'private' room was just not worth going into. My Bar was just hopeless. TG was ok, but the quality of lady friends was ordinary. Saturday night was not much better, with a limp offer for a show in the private room for 100k, my bar was no beter than friday night, but at least TG was on the go, good band, good range of ladies etc.

I had the same experience. No problem with getting delivery, and the quality was much better than I got a couple yrs back in Hong Kong. No headaches or feeling flush in the face. Sometimes it closes early (midnight, 12:30). Never seen the gents outnumber the chicas, unless I walked in at 10pm and was the only person there besides employees. But My Bar and D's Place can both be dead, while Top Gun is hopping.
I was there several nights when it was hopping by midnight, always the ladies outnumbered men 3:1 or more. Never an issue when its hopping.
I was in Jakarta entertaining a group of 6 guys in the middle of June 2010 and would like to share with you guys here on the latest and current pricing of places ventured thus far.
I have been in and out of Jakarta a lot since the beginning of this year for work so I have been roped in as a 'tour guide' there for my pals now.
I usually stay in Sun City hotel located at Hayam Wuruk, West Jakarta. Price there is about IR549k a night plus all the taxes. Room is very nice and the only thing missing there is a tea and coffee facility. Sun City is a entertainment hotel so you can pretty much do everything here. It has one of the nicest and most modern equipped spa equipments here as well.
The Spa is very well decorated and the massage girls are properly attired in blue shorts and pink t-shirts so it has a very 'professional' no hanky-panky outlook. In the room it is up to your nego skills as standard rate applies. Beware that the girls are very pushy for tips at the end of the massage session tho and I tot that was not very professional. I only took the standard massage without any extras and the girl kept insisting that I tip at least IR100k to her! I left without giving anything because I was particularly miffed at her attitude.
Coffee house is not so great but it will suffice as free breakfast is included with your room. The Karaoke is beautifully done with most rooms having 2 floors (upstairs balcony). The upstairs boasting a very nice bed for one to 'rest' when tired of singing. Not the cheapest of Karaoke's in Jakarta (in fact one of the more expensive ones) but the selection of ladies there are fantastic! Best quality Chinese gals (local and China ones) selection in the whole of Jakarta IMHO.
If you want to go out, CROWN Karaoke is just a 8 minute walk away or you can just take a cab there. Crown is not a cheap place to go as well and the drink packages there are outrageous. Girls selection there is also very plentiful but the place is not cheap. It's a huge and grand place with a lounge bar, techno disco and karaoke rooms galore in there but I just felt that the pricing there was a little on the higher side. Granted you get the topless girls dancing at the lounge when the band is not playing and that you can see the action on one of the TV screens in your karaoke room. But. It's Jakarta! You can get topless girls everywhere!
If it's dodgy spa's you like, you can try out the Orchardz Hotel at Jln Industri as well. Not great facilities but the place is where you want to go for a quick fuck. Price is also not expensive (about IR275k for standard) and they have interesting double action for about IR380k as well.
My best recommendation is Hotel Classic. Hotel rooms starts at only IR365k on promotion with breakfast and they have proper coffee house facility there. I am staying here from now on! Karaoke rooms are on the 3rd and 4th floor. The 3rd floor consist of mainly mainland China girls and nice good looking local girls BUT there is a catch here! No screwing them, Price is IR450k for local and IR500k for mainland China gals. Not so fun as they tend to be more 'reserved'. The 4th floor consist of local girls and are dressed more sexily and they have an aura of 'CFM'. Hahaha. Price is IR600k and it consists of 2 shots as well in the price. Rooms provided in separate area but I like the privacy factor as not in the same room as your pals but a few doors away Drink packages here also very reasonably priced as well.
The 2nd floor is the craziest floor! The bar area with live band, pool area, topless girls show and oodles of girls seating all around you to be chosen. Dressed in the skimpiest outfits for you to call and fuck them silly. Price is IR275k for 1 but special promo is IR400k for 2 gals (threesome)! Suggest when you get to the hotel that you "offer" to lock up her valuables ie ID card etc in your safe and you have the combination. I do that a lot as it gives me leverage in case needed.

That's also my favourite way of eating out when in Indonesia and especially Jakarta. You go to a shopping mall, decide which of the food areas you want to use (many times there are more than one) and then decide which type of food you want.
You have your food in less than five minutes for about 30-35K, including drink (fruit juice or tea).
The only problem sometimes is finding a place to sit, but I never had to wait for more than five minutes for that.

My favourite place in Jakarta. Located north (ancol). Search on www and you find the address. The best entertainment centre for men I ever been.
Been trying both the Karoke "shows" and the "spa" in level 7. Advise: know what you want prior going there and also the price level.
Karoke. Level 3 or 4. Quite expensive for room. Girls did full nude dancing show. Well it seems to apply across the board nowadays. It doesn't matter if they are MLs, FLs, TTMs or pacars, there's always someone calling or sending an sms. We spent about 45-60 minutes in each place before moving on to the next bar, and it didn't take long to notice that the same group of girls was also moving from bar to bar.

Likewise, I also did Blok M crawl a few times with a different JKT vet recently and noticed the same thing. But the prettiest girls were exclusively at TG and I didn't see them hopping over to the other bars. When I get back to JKT, I think I'll follow the same strategy as Gonzo Two and pull a good looking one from Top Gun about 11 pm for LT rather than playing the game until the wee hours at the other places. I kept waiting for prices to drop and eventually they did, but then I was finding that it was not only keeping me from being back in the room enjoying a girl longer, but also it was making me tired and unable to monger Hotel Travel and the like as much as I wanted to in the following day.
Many of the girls still don't have anyone toward the end of the night in the Blok, but will play the game all night on pricing until the wee hours if you let them. It can be tiring and not worth the trouble, so maybe it is best to just be really assertive at 11 or midnight, take their hand, and lead them out to the taxi. While it's true he has nothing like the number of reports that you have, he is a senior member and I assume not entirely new to the scene - albeit new to the Jakarta scene. While I agree it is a short time, I think it is worth 15 minutes a day, just to fish the social sites. Conversion from meeting on the net to getting them into bed can be quite quick - but it is unpredictable. The main thing is to get them to meet you for whatever - coffee, lunch, tea, dinner, drinks - and take it from there. From meeting for dinner or drinks to getting them to bed can take as little as 1 or two hours. :D
Incidentally, every girl (except one strange one) has been brimming with GFE and I certainly wouldn't mind taking a few days off to explore most of them further. Another vote for the GFE and for online hookups. There are a lot of charming Indonesian women out there who are fine to hang out with for a week or two and they aren't that hard to meet. good morning,i arrived in cgk last night and headed straight to my hotel, the sheraton media. i was tired after hours of flying and decided just to wander around the hotel.
if you exit the sheraton to the letf and continue walking past the first intersection, you will see to your left a tall building with neon lights: fashion hotel.
lots of taxis at the outside, which i believed was a promising sign of things to come, so in i went. inside, very similar to alexis: a club on the 10th floor, and a "spa" on the 6th.
i headed for the club and saw it was a kind of "straight" club, with a local crowd of rich kids and a very good band on the stage.
one beer after, i left for the spa floor, where i changed into swimming trunks. i spent some time in the jacuzzi, and then went for the massage. place was packed with locals, many of them very young.
i was led to the massage room and in came my massagist. what followed was 1h of soso shiatsu, no extras.
girl was young in a very short skirt that let me peep at her legs and undies. with such an "uniform", i assumed there were better things to come. massagist did not speak one word of english, which did not facilitate things (wel, to be fair, i don't speak a word of bahasa).
total damage was 140k, which was not a rip off, but left me vying for more.
any of you guys have been to this place, and did i misread it entirely or this is as far as it gets?

in the hotel lobby there were some billboards advertising both places. i arrived there about 4:00pm. the billboard indicated nirvana was open from 1:00pm but when i went down there i found it deserted. went back to the lobby and asked someone who told me it opens at 9:00pm and there are lot's of 'ceweks'. so this might be the place barson refers to.
anyway, not wanting to waste the taxi fare i decided to investigate the 'health centre'.
the massage service was offered at three different rates for 90 minutes depending on the type of room. the highest rate was rp 200, 000 for vip which means a standard hotel room. i can't remember exactly the other rates but the cheapest was for a kind of cubicle rather than a room. after seeing it i said no thanks and opted for the vip. i asked if i could choose the masseuse but was told it was 'recommendation only' so i said, 'ok, give me someone 'cantik'. i was given a key for room 407 and headed off to the lift. was not asked for the money up front or my name. i could have just walked off with the key if i had wanted to. at this stage i didn't know what range of service to expect. went to the room and waited for 10 minutes before the girl (whose name is vera) arrived. not the type i fancied for full service (if available) but she seemed very friendly.
turned out the massage was very good and included lot's of 'teasing' from early on, which is a clear signal that more is on offer.
eventually the 'offer for more' was made verbally but came with an asking price of rp 1.5 million which made me laugh a bit uncontrollably. i would have left there and then but the price quickly dropped to rp 1 million. i continued saying no and the price came down to rp 800,000 at which point she explained that this price included the rp 200,000 for the room. rp 600, 000 for the plus plus was still ridiculous but in the interests of research for isg i decided to proceed. but i also asked for some 'mandi kucing' to which she immediately agreed and i wasn't disappointed. probably the best madi kucing/ball licking i've ever had. overall the massage and extra service was really excellent but then came the disappointment. i had in my pocket exactly rp 1 million fresh from an atm machine in crisp rp 100,000 notes. i took out the 10 notes peeled off two and handed her the rest. she counted them and said i had only given her rp 700,000. i tried to take the notes back to check but she would not let me count them. then she snatched at my other hand and managed to take one of the other two notes. i was pissed off but didn't know how this situation might escalate if i tried to do anything about it and decided best just to leave and vent my spleen about it on isg. when i got back to the lobby i looked at my watch and realised i had been in the room for less than 60 minutes. so as well as being ripped off with the payment i was short-changed on the session time.
i'm still curious about nirvana executive club. when i have time i will check the place out on a repeat visit but i will be giving the 'health center' a wide berth.

It is not easy to find, but the directions on post #881 in the Jakarta Hotels thread are spot on. You can get to the bar through the hotel, but there is also a direct entrance to the left of the hotel entrance. Inside, I was given a numbered tag then showed into the bar area. Mama San met me and showed me to a seat. The girls were all seated in a separate area off to one side. I ordered a local beer ($4) and Mama San asked if I wanted a girl, and what type I preferred. She brought a real stunner for me and although she did not speak much English, she was a lot of fun to be with. I bought her a drink (iced tea $3). Mama San told me it would be $35 for ST including the room charge - paid direct to Mama San.
In the room a maid came and took our drinks order - another beer for me and an iced tea for the girl ($ 7+ tip). It's been awhile since the last time I was in Jakarta, maybe 3-4years--WOW, where did the time go? Been exploring Bali more instead but do miss Jaka. so plan to visit again later this year.( time permitting).
1)Now the last time I was there I was with another friend so we always went by taxi everywhere and didn't see all the little things Jakarta had to offer inside a cab.
This time I will be going alone and plan to rent a motobike to do my own exploring. Yes, traffic is pretty bad but I motobiked around in Phnom Penh and HCMC and these places can be just as bad.
Any of you boys know a decent motobike rental place with newer (or even older but reliable) automatics? I heard prices are fairly standard at $4-5/day (any shops in the Jalan Jaksa area as I might stay around here next time)
2)Last time I was there, I used Asiarooms to book my Jakarta hotel for about $55 or so (don't remember the name) but it was NOT a convienent location and a bit far from everywhere. This time I plan to really "save" and plan on staying at the Jalan Jaksa backpacker area. It's a Plus as it is in between most venues. My taxi drove by this place and it was always crowded so may give this location a go.
Any recommemdations for any hotels in this central area? I'll report back if this place was worth it. BTW: I assume hotel rooms in this area are GF? I have to ask as I made the mistake last time as the hotel I booked was NOT GF. Hotel staff didn't allow my guest in even though I booked a double.
Another thing, I meant to explore the Kalijodo area the last time around but never had the time. Plan to explore this place and write about it on my next trip. Only question is, I can't seem to find this area on my Jakarta maps.

Filipina's certainly seem to be the most organized, systematic and aggressive about using dating sites compared to other girls from the area. Yep I get more interests and messages from the Philippines than anywhere else -and I'm not even looking there. They are clearly the most aggressive in searching on this site. If you want to take a side trip, I was told (by another member) that he managed a high rate of success over there too.
However, it is well off my radar as (in my Home Minister's eyes) the Philippines has been removed from the map of the world, and only exists in some surreal suspension of space and time. always they try and go slow with the massage so you need the full two hours.

It's a karaoke place probably with extras but I didn't bother staying to find out. After walking inside I was taken to a fish bowl and invited to select a lady. There were about 8 inside, all looking like they had 'seen better days'.
So Barson if you are right about there being something more interesting at Hotel Maharadja I haven't managed to find it.
After this brief diversion for the sake of ISG research I headed off to Classic Hotel which I have been frequenting more and more often lately in preference to Travel Hotel. The Tavern is fantastic. Always I take 2 girls and have never been disappointed.

From memory, no but as in most places you can use a deposit box at reception.
A friend of mine used to stay there regularly and I can recall several times he would come down the stairs with his conquest and then start counting out cash from his deposit box and hand it to the girl, oblivious to the stares of staunch, upright citizens waiting in the foyer. Spent a few days in Jakarta lately. Stayed at Mercure Rekso (now called Mercure Kota) for about 30 euros a night; good price, good quality.
Due to a delayed domestic flight I arrived late the first night. After freshening up, went to Kartika in need of a ''massage'', only to find out the place closes before 11PM. Probably mentioned before, but I did not notice.
There were several short skirted girls on offer, but I was too tired to want a girl in my room. Went to Rajen Mas instead; still open (but closed when I was finished). Nice little girl, room decent enough and a bargain at 250K (plus tip).
Next day went to Classic Hotel. Easiest way to go there from Hotel Travel is probably by local train, one stop from Mangga Besar station to Juanda station. Easy to find from Juanda station. The place to look for is to the left of the hotel on the second floor of a shopping mall. Huge, with lots of girls around 5PM. Difficult to choose, as they just sit passively along the wall. One was quoted 270K, two girls for 400K so I chose two; OK service. Had to pay a drinks bill of 55K when leaving (one for me, two for the girls); first thought it was 550K which did not feel fine.
Next day Kartika again during opening hours, nice service from two girls. Noticed that there are always lots of girls ''on offer'' to take to hotel at Lokasari.

From memory, no but as in most places you can use a deposit box at reception.
A friend of mine used to stay there regularly and I can recall several times he would come down the stairs with his conquest and then start counting out cash from his deposit box and hand it to the girl, oblivious to the stares of staunch, upright citizens waiting in the foyer. From this and past experience it does seem that most pictures either old or not to be trusted... Maybe asking for a separate updated photo via email would help... I think you overpaid for each of the three options you went for:
1. DIA - while there are WGs on DIA, I have met many (admittedly some whose photos don't exactly match) who aren't there for the money - just normal girls who might be in for some fun. There was a girl who was clearly 10kg more than her photo - but she came with her friend who was hot. I just got the friend's contact and proceeded from there. The possibilities depend on how you word your profile. Incidentally, I never lie about my marital status - in fact I stress it, because I don't want the hassle. There are some who will not be open to it, but plenty of others who will.
2. TG - I'm not a TG expert but most of the regulars here seem to quote 500k LT. But as with anywhere, the WGs will maximize if they smell an opportunity.
3. CJs - Just refer to Ceegees report above yours. If they push for that kind of price, just walk. You'd be surprised how some of them can come down if they really think you're walking away. Normally the ones who don't aren't that great an experience anyway. The WGs here really know how to maximize and you can see some of them do get takers. I've been in CJs and watched a girl target guys staying in Mulia, go up to the room and be back 45 minutes later. She managed 3 "victims" that night before settling in for a late LT. That's an extreme case but there are many similar cases. I certainly wouldn't want to have an LT like that.

- I'm impressed that you were willing to take the train in that neighborhood. No real need, however, as a taxi would cost you at most one or two U.S. dollars (just over 1 Euro) and would probably be quicker.

Experienced Indonesia hands already know what the drill is here, but I thought it useful to provide a quick summary for new visitors to Indonesia. In a nutshell, during the period August 10/11 to September 15/16 (dates approximate) the number of mongering opportunities drops significantly, but not entirely.
Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr
Muslims throughout the world annually observe a month of fasting, known as Ramadan, which this year will begin on August 11, 2010. After the fasting ends, Muslims then celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday on September 9, 2010 (technically, at dusk on September 8th). This holiday is known as Lebaran in Bahasa Indonesian language and can continue for several days afterwards. Many non-Muslims refer to Eid-al-Fitr as the Muslim equivalent of Christmas, since presents are given to children and everyone wears new clothes.
Although Eid al-Fitr is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Eid al-Fitr moves earlier in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year (for example, Ramadan will begin on August 1st in 2011 and Eid al-Fitr will be August 30th in 2011).
During Ramadan, Muslims are obligated to fast from sunrise until dusk, meaning no water or other liquids, no food and no sex. Muslims then break their fast with a small snack/meal at sunset, which in Jakarta is roughly around 6 p.m., then eat a bigger meal an hour or two later. Many folks eat again one or more times during the night, ending up with a pre-dawn meal named sahur. Restaurants are usually packed for dinner, especially in the 5 star hotels like the Marriott and Four Seasons. Ironically, many people gain weight during Ramadan.
Towards the end of Ramadan, around September 4-7, many Jakarta residents leave Jakarta to travel to their home village, to celebrate the Eid holiday with their family and fellow villagers for several days, returning to Jakarta around September 13-19. Estimates are that up to 2 million Jakartans leave Jakarta for their villages in Java & Sumatra. One benefit for those who stay behind is that the traffic is light for several days, and the air & the view improves due to the lack of automobile pollution.
Muslims are supposed to abstain from sex during daylight hours during Ramadan, and if a woman does have intercourse during the nighttime hours, she is then expected to shower and wash from head to toe before sunrise.
There is usually a renewed interest in prayer during Ramadan and attendance increases for mosque services. Ironically, the amount of petty crime (shoplifting, pickpocketing, breaking & entering, etc.) also increases as people become desperate for money to buy food, clothing and gifts for Eid.
Please note that government offices, embassies, consulates and most private offices are closed from just before the end of Ramadan until several days after Eid-al-Fitr, roughly Sept. 7 to 15/16. If you need a visa, have your passport renewed, or have pages added to your passport, etc., plan accordingly.
How does this affect mongering in Indonesia?
Most massage parlors/spas, such as Kartika, Berlian, Maribaya (6th floor of Hotel Melawai), etc., shut down just before Ramadan starts, and re-open approx. 1 week after the Eid ul-Fitr (the exact dates differ from place to place). For 2010, this means that most of those places will close down after this weekend and re-open around September 16th. Most of the ladies who work in these places usually go back home to their villages for the entire 5 1/2 week period, returning to Jakarta when their particular spa re-opens.
Many of the "pick-up" bars and night clubs also curtail their activities during Ramadan, closing earlier, maintaining a lower profile, or even closing completely.
All working girls who return home will be expected to bring presents and cash with them when they return home, so mongers will find many working girls to be extremely aggressive for tips during the next few days. This can work to a monger's advantage, as you may be able to easily negotiate special services, including twosomes, perhaps even anal, from girls desperate to earn cash, but may also work to your disadvantage, since some girls may be more tempted to pick-pocket or rush their short-time session so they can get more business.
Another occurrence is that Muslim fundamentalist groups usually become emboldened. At least once or twice during every Ramadan, there will be a news story about a police or mob raiding/attacking a bar on the grounds that that bar is disrespecting Islam by remaining open during the fasting month.
What's a monger to do?
Fear not; although most mps are closed and bar activity is curtailed, there are still several options, including but not limited to:
- many of the massage spas, such as Hotel Malioboro, Hotel Alexis, and Hotel Travel, do not close during Ramadan; they are allowed to remain open as they are located in a hotel, rather than as a free-standing shop.
- some working girls stick around Jakarta for at least the first 2-3 weeks of Ramadan to earn some more money before they go back to their home villages in time for the Eid. As written here on ISG in the past, for the last several years, a group of Maribaya Spa girls rent a block of 2-3 rooms in the Hotel Melawai and work out of these rooms. I had some great 2-girl sessions here during Ramadan 2007.
- some freelance girls can still be found through mall-hunting, etc., or in some of the hotel bars, although they are usually more discreet in how they act and dress. Not all of these girls will want to spend the entire night with you, although some will.

- some of the hand-job-only spas, such as Fortune Spa, may remain open, although others, such as Jaspa and Delta, may be closed the entire period.
- many of the amateurs and part-timers, such as the girls found thru web sites, and the non-Muslim working girls, may also be available for sex during Ramadan.
- you could travel to Bali, which has a Hindu-majority population, or else travel outside of Indonesia.

A bonus!
Luckily, there's a bonus to all this. When the working girls return to Jakarta after Eid-al-Fitr, they often bring other, younger girls with them. Nothing like an eager, barely-legal girl to brighten up your day!
For example, the best sessions I've ever had at TC (Today Country in Lokasari Plaza, which sadly has since gone downhill) were in the month after Eid 2007, when several young ladies arrived, fresh from the village. I will return to Bangkok in early September where I have arranged for a TTM to come and stay and with me and have her first threesome.
I agree with MS that the number of opportunities is diminished during the Lebaran period. It is essential that a ready supply of phone numbers is at hand. My experience is that sending an SMS offering the opportunity for a little more cash will ensure a SYT is quickly standing in your doorway.

I like using public transport whenever possible; less hassle than taxis sometimes are, you know exactly where you are going and in Jakarta it is definitely quicker (and much cheaper) than going by taxi. I don't think a taxi can beat the three minutes the train needs to Juanda station.
One of the girls in Kartika. The friendliest of the two, younger than the other, & dressed in red. Was Aline, I don't recall the name of the other one. Nothing special to mention about the session other than that it was nice. I am not sure whether I prefer sessions with two girls (one can keep me busy enough), but the nice thing (for me) both in Hotel Classic and in Kartika is that they succeeded in putting on a condom without me even noticing it. They even search my pockets for money which they didn't find as I had 3 juta in it. At the end they offer me to go to the police station to settle everthing down, to which I said ok let's go! And they finally left us go.

In the many years (more than 15) I have been coming and travelling all over Indonesia I have never been stopped and asked for my papers.
(I've been asked for my drivers license often enough, but that's par for the course in Bali, and almost a game.)
But in a case like you describe, absolutely refuse to show your papers or continue the conversation on the side of the road. Demand to go to the police station. They will back down.
Don't worry about language. "No" is universally understood.
Indo cops can be tricky and corrupt but are very rarely strong-arm unless you get physically aggressive with them first.
For your information, a KITAS is a residency permit.
Whatever visa you entered Indonesia on is good enough to travel everywhere throughout the country, provided you don't overstay.

The "Kitas" they were asking for is not relevant unless you have one ( generally for work\retirement) in which case you should carry it. If you were on a Visa on Arrival then just producing your Passport with the Visa inside is sufficient. So it comes down to a game of bluff. Mongers should remember to carry their Passport or relevant doc's during this period, as a photocopy of the Passport does not legally fulfill the requirements. Of course it does when accompanied by 50,000 :-)

It's part of the system. They don't make enought to get buy on so a little help is needed to support the holidays.
I always put 50,000 in my papers and hand it to them. They always hand it back with a thank you and let us go.

So after two days in Singapore, headed to Jakarta. Arrived late in the evening on AirAsia, long and slow queue at immigration, then get luggage, find a cab, arrive in Parklane Hotel after a good 45 min drive. Paid around 300K for a limo, not a bad deal. Nice room, at 70+ € internet included. Had some s. T to fix for next day meetings, so worked with staff until wee hours, was quite tired from last night and day of work in SIN so after checking the empty bar in the basement decided to go sleep and not do any attempt at let's say get drunk a Blok M or CJ's and then miss my early meeting. Funny, though, when I was checking in around 10 PM, met a guy I know from SIN in the lobby, all fresh and prim and proper, alone, heading out. Well HE for sure did not come early, we were working in the lobby until 1AM and did not see him again
Next day had meetings all day. Exchanged a few sms with a potential date from Asiandating, had been on cam a few times, etc. Back at hotel at 7, read few emails, a few more sms, tell her we meet now in hotel, or maybe we'll not meet since am supposed to go out with business partner (lie) and staff (true, see below).

And also will keep my passeport even if I don't like this idea too much.Last year and for the two years prior to that I spent two periods of three months at a time in Indonesia, during which my passport was at an immigration consultant for weeks at a time as I arranged a particular permit.
During those periods I NEVER carried my passport, and I wouldn't even if I was only visiting for a few days, which I do almost every month.
Carrying your passport around, especially if you're mongering or bar-hopping is just plain stupid, notwithstanding Cooze Hound's well-meaning advice.
With the new photo biometric passports it is a giant hassle to get one replaced as I found to my cost when I put mine through the washing machine.
Not only the grief in getting the passport replaced, I lost my Thai residency and work permits and a special Indonesian work permit which were in the passport.
Make a photo copy of the photo/details page, and the page which has your visa/current entry permit on it.
Carry that and tell any cop that your passport is at Immigrasi.
Don't pay them a penny. It's the same as overpaying a girl. The more people that do it, the more they expect to get it and you fuck it up for every other visitor.
If you feel guilty that you have so much and they have so little, give the money to a crippled beggar who really needs it.

Well, whilst I agree in principal with what you are saying. I have a KITAS and so carry that and relevant Police Registration card etc. I also keep a photocopy of detail page of my Passport in my wallet. They never ask for that if they see the other docs. Simple fact of the matter is that if you are on a VOA or simple Business Visa the law states you must carry your Passport (Or it did). So if you are going to just carry a photocopy then expect to possibly have to pay a bit. Especially at this time of year. To use the line that your passport is at immigration then you should support it with a photocopy of the Entry Permit which will have written underneath " Must Report to Immigration Jakarta Selatan within 10 days" or similar. That is proof your Kitas is in processing.
Again, its just the Ramadan period when you are most likely to get shaken down with an expectation of a payment.
But hey, each to their own. I have only lived here 8 years so I am still learning.

Yu should have asked them for ID. Did you take a blue bird. It would not have happened in case you had taken a blue bird. Many fake blue birds are also around. Recently, there was a case, where a couple of them @ Ancol area were posing as cops and trying to pull money out. But got busted not realising that the guy whom they were talking to was senior cop himself in Mufti. And with Ramadan, one needs to be be vigilant, since you will find some truants wanting to make some fast money.

Not at all. Actually, I have not been stopped even once in the past few years. But in the past, there have been road blocks in certain areas where they stop every single car that comes by. Usually this happens between 1 and 4 in the morning just prior to or during Ramadan. Last time I was stopped was right in front of Izzi Pizza in Menteng at about 1am on my way to Stadium. They had about 20 police there stopping every car that came through. They were stopping Indonesians and foreigners equally.

Yes Smoothy. It mostly happens in the night. I have been many times checked in the night when I cross Jalan Rasuna Said and head towards Menteng. Just near Izzi Pizza, I have been asked for my passport and Kitas card and they want it in original. I always carry the Police card. But, never heard of it happening on the toll road in the afternoons, which is now happening pretty often. And my cop friend says non chalantly that they are imposters. And when I asked him what they plan to do about it, he says, " Oh its Ramadhan coming, so some poor guys want to make some money. Its ok" Jakarta is amazing

Yeah... it's your luck really. I've been stopped twice - both times on Hayam Wuruk in a private car: once with an Indonesian gf and another with a local guy driving. I only had my Malaysian driving licence with me - my standard practice in Jakarta. I can't afford to lose my passport as Malaysian immigration give you incredible hassle over this (it can take two years for them to decide you can have a new passport, and in the meanwhile you have to apply for travel papers each time you want to leave the country); it's a pain (though nothing like as bad) to lose my Malaysian identity card - so I only ever carry my drivers licence around.
Sure they make a fuss, but nothing 50k can't cure; besides, during maybe 80+ trips to Jakarta, I've been stopped twice. I can live with that. I just prefer to look at the benefits the city affords me - and those easily outweigh the liabilities...

I have been arrested once and without my passeport I think I would have been in trouble, I mean paying money.
Some updates, for people who minds:
King cross, kelapa gading, lots of actions there naked show from atleast 9 pm on ground floor + 3 Road floor in the lounge, ladys to be found in ground floor, avoid dancing ladys in 3rd floor for 4 drinks = 200 000 rp you got 5 min of close dancing, worthless.

I might have told this story before. Back around 1991, our driver was late or sick, don't remmber. Ended up driving my two boys to school, Gatot Subrato area, around 7:15 am. Police waived me down at intersection, claimed I clipped a motorbike?
Long story short, dumped all my dollars & rupiah on the car floor, told the kids to give me their lunch money....cop got all of it = $4K. But that's around $40K these days :D

Am currently here during the fasting month and am pleased to say that after the first two days there are certain aspects that appear to be maintained vis-a-vis the scene (well the Mulia anyway...)
I'll just give a quick update on happenings at Hotel Mulia where I was staying
- CJs continues to operate until 3am every morning
- The spa has now changed management. Where it used to be an expected norm that a proposition would take place after the massage, now the massage ladies have changed and I've registered two out of three negatives over the last couple of days. Mileage may vary, but hopefully this isnt an indicator of things to come. I have never paid more than 500k after some bargaining, but again, your mileage may vary.
Would very much like to know if Club 36 is still active during this month, earlier reports indicated this was the case. For those not familiar with the modus operandi of 36, the running order goes
- band playing local and English songs (and pretty damn good they are too)
- Ladies removing their garments completely
- A guest artist of some sort
- Repeat three to four times between 10pm and 5am
Personally I really enjoy the atmosphere at Club 36, its a great mix between rock songs, Indo songs, kota techno and friendly debauchery.
The relations officers are Thai but can speak English and Indo (which is disconcerting!). They will push you for LDs at IDR50k a pop and they cannot be escorted from the premises, so please be careful (pleasant though they are)
The crowd is largely local Chinese but extremely friendly and drinks prices are reasonable (IDR1 mil minimum spend if you want a table with a view). They had good guest artistes the last time I was here (last week before the fasting month) including some big names like ST12 and Nidji. A couple of westerners around too.

I returned to Jakarta recently after a 6 month absence, the longest ever. The reason was my heart stopped beating which is as good an excuse as any I suppose. I was in my London office at 10.30am; by 15.00 that day I was on a life support machine with heart, lungs, kidneys and liver not functioning. Fortunately no vital organ was affected but it did take a while to recover from the heart operation. It was a rare unpredictable spontaneod event which can happen to anyone you'll be pleased to know.
I did think what if it happened when I was in Jakarta? Tough, it didn't stop my trip and it won't stop any future ones.
I did notice a couple things which were different which I've not seen reported (but may have missed it): first, they re-introduced the fixed 25USD Visa and dropped the 10USD option for short trips which is irritating, also I noticed that the Silver Bird fare has more than doubled to 300k. Probably worth hunting a taxi upstairs which has just dropped someone off. Finally I noticed many many than usual ayam heading into 30 bar which hitherto has been abysmal. I'm not sure if that was a one-off - cheap night or whatever.
I "met" a girl on the net before coming out and she turned up (on time!) at my hotel on the first night - even better than I expected having just seen her on cam. She told me, nervously, that she had a bule boyfriend she was going to marry who is working outside Indonesia and did I mind a purely sexual relationship? Errr.....OK then....... Some things never change.

Hi Classic hotel is open and its going full flow from 1pm till 5 am the next day. Had a whale of a time this weekend. Am sure Alexis and Travel will be hotel since all the bordellos functioning out of the hotels are open. 6th floor Girls are around and am being hounded with SMS after SMS asking me to come over. They are incidentally in the 6th floor itself, but in the rooms. Am being discreet about the room number. Try the second one out

Welcome back B69. Glad to hear you're better. I have a couple of friends who had some close encounters so I can understand where you're coming from.
Incidentally, I've found that using a prepaid taxi ends up being similarly priced and faster to your hotel. Since you've paid, they may as well get you there asap so they can collect the next fare. I did try taking Silverbirds as well as the Express Toyota Alphard - both are similarly priced but the Alphard has way more space and maybe a fraction cheaper.
I might have to take another look into 30Bar then - but it was dead when I last visited (albeit on a Thursday night). As for the girls, it's as they say, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." God I miss Jakarta...

On my way to the airport on Thursday (the 2nd day of Ramadhan), I was invited by another friend to stop-by FM Boutique Hotel ... it was fully operational ... spa and karaoke.
Selection of about 30 gals on the 2nd Floor ... categorised into 2 grades of attractiveness .. Rp 300,000 and Rp 700,000 for ST ... if you wanted them to accompany you to the karaoke, it was approximately double the charges for a total of 5 hours.
I took Tias for Rp300k ST ... 22-year old, 5ft 5in, gorgeous D-cups ... but service was just SOP ...
Will definitely return in future, as the KLM flight I take normally departs at about 7.00pm ... after checking out from hotel at 1.00pm, this is a convenient pit-stop on the way to the airport.

JAKARTA (Reuters Life!) – Women-only train carriages were launched this week in Jakarta in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, in an attempt to avert groping and sexual harassment on packed commuter trains.
Women can choose to board the female-only, orange and pink-seated carriages at the front and rear of trains in Jakarta, the latest in a growing number of cities to offer women-only services.
The state-owned railway operator, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), said it had not received many complaints about sexual harassment but the company had noticed that many women avoided densely-packed trains.
"The women-only carriages are aimed to make women feel comfortable," an official at PT KAI told Reuters Television.
PT KAI is now providing 20 female-only carriages and plans to add more in the next three months.
One female commuter headed for Bogor city was pleased with the new carriages.
"I feel respected. As you may be aware, sexual harassment took place on packed trains," the commuter, giving her name just as Dennisa, told Reuters Television.
The trains, manufactured in Japan, are the only fast public transport service between the four city suburbs connecting Jakarta. Women account for almost half of the 500,000 commuters a day.
Female-only carriages on trains were first introduced in the festive, year-end season in Japan in 2000 as a way to stop sexual harassment. These carriages are now offered in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan's two biggest cities.
Since then the popularity of women-only carriages has spread internationally with countries including India, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brazil also operating women-only carriages.

Funny you should say that because I am more than less trying to get away on the 7th October for another asian trip to Indo and Vietnam ... if I can. Must be some kind of telepathy going on here as we missed each other last time for a matter of few days I believe.

This is a report directed more towards long term residents of Jakarta, people who have an idea of the lay out of the city and who can get by on reasonable Bahasa Indonesia, I appreciate it will be of no assistance to anyone who is newly arrived, a tourist or someone on a tight schedule on a business trip for example.
There are two main reasons for my report and I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of anyone, like me, who is now long past the kid in a sweetshop phase of Jakarta life and is now a jaded old stager. The first element related to a recent move in my career. It was a promotion I am happy to say but a transfer that saw me leaving the comfort zone of my well established happy hunting ground along the Transjakarta Busway corridor 1 in central Jakarta. No longer would I be within twenty minutes of Blok M or Kota depending on my mood, instead I found myself in the dreary (so I thought) wastelands of east Jakarta.
On arrival at my post my heart sank at the grim vista bisected by a railway line and a six lane highway; no bright shopping malls, bars, clubs, karaoke joints, five star hotels, upmarket restaurants or plush offices, instead just a vast swathe of minor government offices, unfashionable shopping centres, car showrooms, warungs, down at heel military bases, second rate further education institutions and cheap hotels. Oh dear, they were going to have to pay me well to stay in this godforsaken wilderness.
However a few weeks into this drudgery I soon realised that of course Jakarta is still Jakarta and all is not what it seems under the surface. I mentioned the colleges and cheap hotels, well they are the key and one afternoon I grasped the connection. I was at a loose end and mooching around outside a seemingly uninteresting mall when I noticed three young ladies hanging around who appeared to be at a similar loose end, when one of them approached and mentioned that I might like to take them for a bite to eat I realised that things might be looking up.
Not having come down in the last rain shower I cut straight to the chase, how much would it cost for the three of them to join me for a bit of afternoon delight? The princely sum of 200k each was agreed. Where could we go? Just grab a taxi and she'll work out the rest, we jumped on a taxi and my procuress had us at a suitable establishment within five minutes. Lo and behold they did "transit rates", 175k for six hours, so, thought I, there's a lot more of this going on than I imagined.
After a thouroughly enjoyable foursome in the room (similar decor and style to the Melawai hotels for less than half the price) I questioned my lovely companions more intensely. They were locals, they attended one of the colleges nearby and typically of students were always short of cash. They met blokes regularly indeed they were waiting for one such appointment when I picked them up (I am fairly sure by the nature of phone calls that they took that they merely delayed their prior appointment and no doubt he had fun with my sloppy seconds).
The beauty of it is that they of course have dozens of friends who are more than willing to accommodate me if I wish and with the genius of FaceBook I now have far more leads than I can actually handle at the moment.
This leads me to the second point. I used to be an absolute devotee of Blok M, there was no more fantastic place on planet earth than the handful of bars that lined Jalan Falatehan, however in recent years work and domestic issue have meant that I rarely ever got to visit the place. One such occasion presented itself during the World Cup and I immediately seized the opportunity to once again sample the delights of a late nighter in My Bar or Top Gun.
OMfuckingG! What a shithole.
Was it always that ghastly? Or is it just that I saw the place for the first time without rose tinted spectacles? Such a collection of hard faced, worn out slappers I have never before seen, actually that's not true, I've seen them before, years ago back when I was a regular, they're still there, going through the motions but charging absurd amounts of money for the privilege, I couldn't believe it.
What was worse however was the blokes themselves, they were fawning over these tired old trollops as if they were catwalk models, buying them drinks and even fighting with each other to dance with them! What shocked me most is who these guys were, they were pretty much the longstanding regulars who have been propping up the bars there since long before I arrived on the scene. Do they not know anything else about Jakarta? Have they never been out and about to see what else is on offer in this heaving metropolis? Presumably they speak reasonable Indonesian, they must know their way around a bit but still they pay way over the odds for overpriced booze and way, way over priced totty.
Like I say, if you're new to Jakarta or are time constrained you have no choice but to stick to the main drag but for heaven's sake gentlemen, if you can handle your way around this crazy town get your asses out of Falatehan, take a few risks, you'll be amazed at what's out there.

Im resident in KL and visit Jakarta about 4 times a year and find very few charms in Blok M bars. The road is broken and crumbling, the taxis there are crap rip offs ( I learnt quite quickly to find normal taxis at the end of the road) and many of the people hanging round there seem to be in the low life category.
Ive been devouring freebies on all my trips which has introduced me to some great bars in Kemang where I;ve later gone hunting alone.. Im never alone in Jakarta ( see trip reports ) but Blok M is off my list unless really desparate.
Its a shithole as stated.. and for some Im sure its a goldmine. Not me tho...

Hahaha. I think you're being a little bit unfair on Top Gun. Perhaps you forgot that it's necessary to drink a fairly large amount of alcohol before stepping foot inside? Still n all, you got a point. It's also fun meeting women who wouldn't be seen dead in a Blok M bar, but still enjoy having some fun on the side. Most non-Indo speakers would probably do better on dating websites for that, as at least most of the girls there have quite good English. The ones in the obscure shopping malls probably don't.

I think Dorman's comments could apply to a number of countries around the region, where the focus by Westerners becomes one particular area (or even one particular group of girls!). These are invariably places surrounded by Westerners or where this is a high incidence of English spoken.
Having ventured to a few other places like that in a few other countries lately, the high pricing/ bad attitude/ low quality situation becomes apparent. Except to those who are regulars there.
Just attempting to move outside these areas even a bit (to sometime Westerner/ mostly local crowds) pays off significantly. North Jakarta is a prime example of that. Contacting locals also works, though that usually costs a bit more, but is so worth it I've found. But free also is a common result.
Unfortunately I don't have the time to base myself for weeks on end in an outer region like Dorman, so I can't enjoy the way that he will be. I don't think most guys here can do so either. But if a "site visit" or "evaluation" is ever needed Dorman, no matter what it is, don't hesitate to get in touch...

I only have problem one time that I pick up a girl at TC she don't speak one word of english and I got her for all night, she just look at me and smile all night, I don't think Jakarta is the worst city in asia for communication is much worst at surabaya.

I am in a peculiar position as a result of my work.
I actually am based in Bangkok, but in four years I have been here, I have never even set foot in the Nana end of Sukhumvit let alone Patpong.
Just about everything I know about P4P in Bangkok I've got from ISG.
My face is very well-known to the more than 1000 employees of the organization I work for. Its puritanical company culture is such that if I was even seen at NEP I would probably be posted to Boise Idaho until I reached mandatory retirement age.
It's the same elsewhere in the region. I travel between Bangkok, KL, Singapore, Jakarta and Bali almost continuously. The three other capital cities are also out as far as mongering since we also have a huge presence in those places. Four Floors of *****s would be five too many, and as for Top Gun, well, it'd be me that got the bullet.
Bali is the only place I can fool around a bit because our presence here is small and the various massage places are quite ambiguous. (X houses unfortunately are off the menu since there are no gray areas about being seen coming out of one of those.)
That's not to say I'm short of pussy, far from it, there are at least a couple of hotties a phone call away in every port of call and in Bangkok the choice among our female support staff is endless.
But I miss the scoring and whoring, so please pass on some FL sites out in the burbs of Jakarta (preferably far from expat apartment blocks and the risk of disapproving eyes).

I actually am based in Bangkok, but in four years I have been here, I have never even set foot in the Nana end of Sukhumvit let alone Patpong.
Just about everything I know about P4P in Bangkok I've got from ISG.
My face is very well-known to the more than 1000 employees of the organization I work for. Its puritanical company culture is such that if I was even seen at NEP I would probably be posted to Boise Idaho until I reached mandatory retirement age.
It's the same elsewhere in the region. I travel between Bangkok, KL, Singapore, Jakarta and Bali almost continuously. The three other capital cities are also out as far as mongering since we also have a huge presence in those places. Four Floors of *****s would be five too many, and as for Top Gun, well, it'd be me that got the bullet.
Bali is the only place I can fool around a bit because our presence here is small and the various massage places are quite ambiguous. (X houses unfortunately are off the menu since there are no gray areas about being seen coming out of one of those.)
That's not to say I'm short of pussy, far from it, there are at least a couple of hotties a phone call away in every port of call and in Bangkok the choice among our female support staff is endless.

As far as I can tell, the scoring and the whoring is but a step away - almost anywhere in Jakarta.;) It's just a matter of having the right attitude and keeping an eye out for possibilities. This is especially so if you are a bule/farang. If you want to be discrete, you might want to try a dating site and try your luck. There are plenty of choices there and several members here have found such methods useful. It is very possible to bed on the first date whether they are seeking a commercial transaction or not - YMMV. The other advantage is that you can choose subtler locations to meet which may be further from the prying eyes you're concerned about... Good luck.

- slightly belated response but I think you make a number of interesting points, not the least of them being your perception, "then and now" of the Blok M establishments. I 100% agree with your analysis and apart from a recent visit with friends I never go there: as you say it's the old tossers who put me off rather than the girls. (OK, I'm an old tosser myslef in some respects, mainly the "old" bit). I think your general point about exploring unexplored areas (albeit through necessity in your current case) is valid; there are lots of excellent places off the beaten track where I've had similar experiences - only one girl at a time however - I've yet to manage a foursome!

Thanks in advanceGents, isn't there a hotel IN the airport? I stayed there two years ago overnight after a long flight in. Nice place, nice buffet breakfast. If you are not partying the night before your flight, maybe just spend the night there. No long ride the next morning to get to the airport.

Early morning traffic is normally smooth. Leave at 6:30 to 7:00 should be ok. Traffic after 8 builds up and can add another 30 min for that trip.

Shouldn't this be in the hotel thread? Anyway you could look at one of the hotels near Slipi or maybe the Ciputra - that's just about the last hotel before heading down towards the airport. Alternatively you could stay at Alexis....:D. Incidentally guys, traffic after 8am won't be a factor as the flight is at 9am... so perhaps 6.30 - or 7am if you've already done a web check in.

Today out of the blue, got an email from a former lover with a You Tube attachment that contained with video of her wedding.

Planning a 10 day trip in Feb to Jakarta. I have read the forum.
Never been to Indonesia before. Tired of the Phils.
I would like to stay around Bundaran Hi because of the nice hotels and the malls.
I don't need the bars or clubs every night and I'm also going to try DIA.
Have to make plans now because I'm getting bored.
Anybody with thoughts about this please give advise?

I am currently in Thailand, but need to leave since my 4 weeks Visa runs out. So, I think about a trip to Jakarta. I think I will go mid next week. I was in Jakarta before. About 15 years ago and at that time I did not monger much. I was a Student and stayed in a area, similar Khao San Road in Bangkok.
Now I would like to stay about one week in Jakarta and would like to stay near where the action is.
I read in the Hotel Thread and I think I will stay near Blok M, maybe in Ambhara might be the right choice, or do have somebody a better advice.
Where could one find the best place for Freelancer. I suppose Blok M is still a good place, but what Disco is now hot? What is the age of condent in Indonesia? I suppose 18, or is it maybe 21?
Is there any good advice what to do, or not to do? As far as I could read, one should better use the blue bird taxis, to avoid Taxi Scam. Something else to know?

Hi Friends, have been away from Jakarta, rather Indonesia for over a month for my long pending visit back home after more than 4 years Am gonna be back to Jakarta by end of next week. And suddenly realized that Jakarta is indeed my home. Never missed my native country when I was in Jakarta, the way am missing Jakarta out here.
Normally after Lebaran the price in places like 6th floor, Classic Hotel, Travel Hotel etc goes up with new additions happening to the stable, in terms of new girls. How is the scene? Have the prices gone up? Is the quality of the new girls better, especially at Maribaya? Would appreciate any info. Because the moment I hit Jakarta, I would like to get back into action.

i just want to make a quick initial report so fellow travellers thinking about coming here know the facts.
be careful at the airports i was told by a local that many taxi company have rigged meters.. so i waited in the long queue for a bluebird taxi. i paid for the toll on the way. but when we reached the hotel he added another 11k which looked like a toll charge. it was late and not much in total so i paid without fuss.
weather at the moment is not great it raining heavily and frequently. i'm staying near jl menga besar in a toop recommended hotel in the hotels section. hotel is ok but dated and bathroom full of ants.
the area is a real dump..,huge rats regularly on the sidewalks, homeless people sleeping on the streets, begging children around the 'few' clubs, lack of decent eats, rubbish dumped on the streets everywhere with stray ill looking cats eating from, and smell of sewer throughout, lots of pollution and traffic, often have to walk on the traffic filled streets because the sidewalks are underdeveloped or full of garbage or mud etc..
i went to 1 club last night i walked past called 'millies', the place was empty and lights off so you could bearly see infront of you.. looked like a mafia haunt so i left speedily. i then walked to travel hotel, realised my jeans were covered in mud when i got there. went in to the massage section saw a selection of girls best was no more than a 6/6.5.. was about to leave when i came across one who was passable. when she stripped she had a hideous mole on her back eughhh!! if this is the best that jak has to offer, it really isn't worth the cost of the flight and your precious annual leave when you do the sums.

if any of expats or locals read this i'd appreciate if you could recommend cheap places to shop, good quality reasonably priced restaurants,and nice places to hangout.. please.. please.. please forever will be in your debt...

No disrespect intended but you might need a guide to help figure things out. Why not contact JAD, pm if you need his contacts or go to the classified ad thread for his contact information.
Also, you should try some of the 'nicer, high end' places like alexis, maliboro, etc....do a quick read of this thread for addresses, prices, etc.

Everything you write is true, but it's all part of what makes the place great ;-) If it really doesn't suit you, give Jakarta a miss, it's rotten to the core. But the rot is fertile and surprising. Don't worry about the unrefrigerated food in the local restaurants, it's much fresher than refrigerated food ... some of the stuff you buy in supermarkets can be months old because it's being refrigerated ;-) Read the forum properly, Stadium is dead easy to find.

I think as with all other destinations you just need some time to adjust. And then the pollution, nois, dirt & heat in Jakarta is not very helpful. I fell in love with Indonesia in general, & Jakarta especially.
About the food in the open, it is probably Nasi Padang which definitely is a health risk (and extremely spicey as well). Better stick to the Chinese restaurants which unfortunately are not too easy to find these days

first of all, Stadium isn't on Manga Besar, but on Hayam Wuruk.
you should've gone back to the major intersection closest to this shop.
on your right from there would be the hotel, name of which escapes me.
on your left, and where you should go, there should be a several quick mart stores.. followed by a block or so walk down to the second alley, and Stadium will be off to the side on the alley. It''ll be right before the new remodeled building which now has a Starbucks and Burger King.
can't miss it. There will be tons of taxis parked off to the side congesting traffic by the entrance.

well kota (part of town you're staying in) does have its own innate "charm".
personally i like the raw street feel as opposed to the glitzy and stuffy mall scene of central and s. jakarta.
not much of a shopper, but you can check out the small mall at lokasari plaza (right on manga besar, everyone will know where it is, just ask). there are some food joints there as well. the pizza hut by the mercure hotel (further past it) (that's the name that was escaping me in previous post) offers nice pasta dishes and a salad bar.)
you can always try the street stands, for something more adventurous.. and there are street chinese joints on manga besar, just before hayam wuruk.
for more shopping, not sure what you're shopping for, also try the huge wtc mangga dua mall, not too far away from the area.
if you like trance/progressive music, stadium is a must hangout. go there late. club is on the 4th floor. you can also check out millenium on hayam wuruk for a slightly different musical experience, but in that "vein".
also try the club at the borobodur hotel, name escapes me, but that hotel is in the general area. otherwise, all the places to go, etc are down south, which shouldn't be an issue traffic wise if you go late(r) at night. just get a bluebird.
if you want to see overpriced hos draped all over dorky middle aged business types on expense accounts, check out cj's at the melia hotel and bats at the shangri la. those are the top hotel bars last time i checked. be prepared for drink sticker shock. the scene will probably get old very fast, but it might be worth your time and entertainment value to check it out anyways. don't bother going much before 11 pm. sometimes the live bands can be quite good, especially at bats, personally i find cj's live music uber cheesy.
for a more "earthy" experience, go to the blok m bars on jalan falatehan.

Its true what others say here, Jakarta does take some "getting used to".
Your best bet would be to shift to Blok M\Kemang. Much more English spoken, cleaner ( relative) friendly bars and clubs where most girls speak rudimentary English.
Much better for a first timer IMHO.

re jakarta in general, keep in mind it's never been and never will be any kind of tourist or sightseeing destination. it's an ugly, polluted and insanely gridlocked city. its only attraction is its people and its being an oasis of "fun" in an otherwise islamist and very conservative country.
check out the normal clubs on weekends. red square and triple x (or was it double x?) right across the street. there are many many more.

If you belong to any of the Apec countries you can get a an Apec card, about US$100, depends on the country.
With this you do not need either a visa or to pay any fee to enter Indonesia.

I don't know what country you're a citizen of, but I've been charged a Visa fee ever since I started coming to Indonesia (2004 or so). The used to have two different types, but now only have the $25 type.
I am German. Before I didn't need to pay a fee. I asked the girl at the counter and she told it's new since one month's.

The change to only $25 was recent. 6 months ago, maybe?

I had to pay it last March. It was very new at that time.

I had to pay it last March. It was very new at that time.I paid the $25 in March also. Prior to that, it has been $10 / 7 days, and $25 / 30 days. It had been like that for at least 5 years.
I will be back to Jakarta beginning of October.

The 6th floor, sometimes indicated by 5+1 is a bar/bordello on the 6th floor of Hotel Melawai I. The name of the bar is Maribaya. Girls/masseuses (?) hang out in the bar and you can book them for a massage which comes with/turns out to be a complete sex-session.

According to my passport the change putting a huge visa (10/25 USD) into it came in 2003.
Before it was free even for 60 days.

Cheers!Correct - and till recently it was not possible for people with Dutch passports to get their visa on arrival (VOA) - had to go to the Indonesian Embassy and pay $ 35. Germans could get a VOA from 2003, but no free entrance. That was reserved for countries like Brunei and Singapore.
But htose thinking it is a lot of money and hassle may ask an Indonesian what it will cost him to get a tourist visa to Europe.
