I think there is a risk to what you are proposing but it's maybe not the risk you have in mind! The point I'm hinting at, is that getting involved with a girl's family could make it even harder to "escape" should you ever wish to do so. I went to Hotel Malioboro the other day -- my first time there. Here's my (concise) report.
First of all, though the facilities are clean and nice, the bar/lounge are where you pick the girls is not to my liking, basically it's like a canteen with lots of people (i was there last friday about 5pm) and noise, a lot of smoke etc. Not really nice environment compared for example to the more up-market stylish Alexis. Anyway there's gals for every tastes, bule gals/PRC's/Thai etc available for 1.5 M. I picked a local (two prices available, some at 350k but not great looking at all and others at 500k or 800k I can't remember how much i paid for the girl). Truly sorry to have to report this news – Cynthia of Kartika passed away this afternoon.

I received a phone call from Cynthia’s sister less than an hour ago (6 p.m. local time) to inform me that Cynthia had died around 3 p.m. this afternoon in her kampung (home village) outside of Semarang, Central Java. She had been home sick since late June, after having worked at Kartika in Jakarta since 2003 (with time off to give birth in August 2004).

Cynthia was 26 years old. She leaves behind her three-year old son Robbie and her extended family. Cause of death unknown.

Just in case it was a prank call, I called Rista at Kartika and she answered the phone in tears, and confirmed that the news was correct.

Wow. She was a wonderful human being who died way too young. She will be missed.

Here are my rough opinions for the venues I know something about.


My recommended reseanoble pricing for Jakarta:

Massage: Rp50,000 - Rp75,000 per hour

Hj: Rp50,000 - Rp100,000

Bj: Rp100,000 - Rp150,000

Shag: Rp300,000 - Rp400,000 per pop


For lower end massage places like Kimochi, Spamas type places FS should be yours for 150K or 200K max (on top of what ever room fee you incur.)

For middle tier places like Puri Sehat, Java, Comfort batutulis FS should be yours for 200K or 250K max.

Top end places and those which pretend to be top end (cough cough Tropical) you will need to tip 300-500K for FS

Handjob should get 50K (clothed) or 100K if she does something really outstanding like prostrate massage or titty fuck in any venue. Add 50K for a BJ (maybe a little more if for a CIM)

The services offered by girls within any massage place will greatly vary. So you shouldn't be shy about asking what you want from the booking desk. If you primarily want a girl who will play around and screw the whole time - ask for a girl who can main main. You will then get a girl who should take care of the the sexual biz well but won't be able to massage. If you really want a good massage and you want to go with the flow if you want extras - asked for a girl who gives a good strong massage. If they insist on an amount, I usually make a joke that I am going to give them 5K. Then I remark that I am sure the are more worried now than before I committed to a tip amount. At this point I will 75% of the girls are on board. For those who want to hear a price, I offer them the lower end of the scale I stated above. I will then only do a minor bargaining upward. If I don't have an agreement within a minute or two at most, I tell the girl to forget the extras and just finish my massage. There are sooooo many oppourtunities to get a great lay in Jakarta I can gladly sit back and enjoy a straight pampering massage. Basically the true key to not overpaying in a massage parlor is having the true willingness to walk out without the extra. That really only happens about 5 to 10% of the time you do want the extras. Of course, I know many guys who just have to have that girl and they end up paying sometimes twice the going tip rates. I hate that because the girls will then think every westerner should pay those inflated prices.

I am assuming you are talking about freelancers.
Blok M freelancer girls should get 200-250K inclusive of taxi money for a one pop shorttime. Add 100 -150K to those numbersfor LT. However, it sure seems more recently that a lot of the better looking girls hold out for 500K as they are sponsored. Up to you if you think they are worth it. Personally I rarely see a Blok M worth that kind of money.

I have little experience with hotel bar girls, from what I can tell the prices seem a bit more over the map. But I would say in most cases no more than 300K for a ST (especially if you are staying nearby) and no more than 500K for LT. Of course there does seem to be a fair amount of guys will to pay those 1 million quotes, but not enough to go around for all the girls. Usually those guys are long gone by 11PM anyway, and the girls will adjust their expected compensation accordingly.

Unfortunately we may never know the truth about Cynthia's death. According to Rista, a co-worker at Kartika who comes from the same kampung, Cynthia supposedly had some serious stomach ailment that caused her face and body to bloat.

After Cynthia died, I asked Rista point-blank if Cynthia had AIDS and Rista said no. However, considering Cynthia's profession, it's certainly a possibility, and considering the stigma surrounding AIDS, Cynthia might not have told Rista or anyone else that she had AIDS if in fact she did have it.

It's also possible that Cynthia had AIDS and didn't know it, considering the lousy medical care and lack of proper testing facilities in this country, especially in rural areas. It's also possible that Cynthia's death had nothing to do with HIV or AIDS or any STD, considering the myriad other diseases (typhoid, tuberculosis, dengue fever, food poisoning, bronchitis, etc.) prevalent here in Indonesia, especially among the lower income population.

Cynthia first went home to her "kampung" (home village) near Semarang in late June as she wasn't feeling well. Sadly, she never returned to Jakarta. She apparently visited a local practitioner of traditional medicine in her village, and took "jamu" (traditional herbal medicine) instead of western drugs.

I talked to her on the phone a couple of times in July/August, also sent one million rupiah to her twice (through Rista). I stopped hearing from Cynthia once Ramadan started in mid-September as her cell phone ran out of pulsa and she turned it off, and I was not able to send more money to her as Rista (and Cynthia's other friends from Kartika) were all home in their villages.

When Rista returned to Jakarta in late October, she told me that Cynthia was still sick, and I seriously considered flying out to Semarang to see Cynthia and find out what's up (I wrote a post about that a month ago). Unfortunately I never got the chance to do so, and now it's too late.

Rista travelled to her kampung last week and met with Cynthia's family. Understandably they are all devastated by what happened, especially Cynthia's mom and 3-year-old son. I may travel to the kampung myself soon to express my condolences in person (yes, I know the family will ask me for money for the son!).

Interesting side comment about modern technology: Cynthia died at 5 p.m., not 3 p.m. as I first reported, and I received an sms from Cynthia's sister within one hour, informing me of the death. While it's possible that the sister knew who I was, more likely the sister was just sending sms messages about the death to everyone on Cynthia's mobile phone "contacts" list, something that would not have been possible ten years ago.

As for KLM Business Class. Good choice. It is worth it. But you'll still get the same cold attitude of their flight attendance ;P Anyways, it is a short 2 hour flight. Just make sure you guzzle the champagne!!

I am assuming you are talking about freelancers.
Blok M freelancer girls should get 200-250K inclusive of taxi money for a one pop shorttime. Add 100 -150K to those numbersfor LT. However, it sure seems more recently that a lot of the better looking girls hold out for 500K as they are sponsored. Up to you if you think they are worth it. Personally I rarely see a Blok M worth that kind of money.Thanks for your advice Mongerxx. I too find the girls in Blok M not worth more than Rp300,000.

- having been to CJ's last week I don't think it's true that ugly ones are banned! In general the standard is better than 30 Bar however which I think is now really dire.

I was in 30 Bar last Friday between about 11pm and 12 with a girl and two local guys. There were only around 70 people (yes I counted) in the main area and maybe 20 in the bar at the foot of the escalators. Probably 25 or so females and not one that I would have had (apart from the one I was already with!), even if I had been desperate. I managed to speak to one girl who was not that bad but 30Kg too heavy (for me) in the interest of research and she wanted 100USD. I'm working with some Colombian guys here in Venezuela. I haven't been having a great time with the Venezuelan girls due to the lack of gfe they have been providing so far. But one of the guys flew his colombian girlfriend in last week and asked me if I wanted to pay to fly her friend in for myself. She'd stay in my room and I would need to pay her flight in, and for her food. That would also give his girlfriend someone to hang out with. You were in a different area of town than me then. The girls in Venezuela may be the hottest I've seen anywhere in the world. The Malioboro Hotel and Spa (yes, the same building) is located on Jalan Gajah Mada, one block north of the "Harmoni" bus stop on the Transjakarta bus line. If you're not taking the bus, most taxi drivers should know the Malioboro as it's been open for almost a year now. If the taxi driver doesn't know, tell him you want to go to the Carrefour at Harmoni, the next main building north is the office of Lion Air, then there's Malioboro.

Malioboro and Alexis have both been reported on here recently, with the Malioboro receiving mixed reviews, the Alexis more positive reviews. They are both considered "high-end" and therefore more expensive than the regular MPs in Jakarta such as Kartika, Hotel Travel, Today Country, etc. They both offer mainland Chinese girls at 1,500,000 rupiah a session, also Thai and Uzbek/Russian girls as well as local Indonesian girls in various price categories (350,000 to 800,000 rupiah). Watch out for "extra" charges at Malioboro as I was tricked there in September.

Supposedly Malioboro and Hotel Travel have the same owner and the local Indonesian girls switch back and forth between the two places, with the Hotel Travel being much cheaper at 250,000 rupiah plus tip!

Something still bothers me when I was in Jakarta a while ago. Maybe some brothers here can shade a light on this matter.

Went to Millennium discotheque with some friends on a weekday night. Music was extremely loud and the place quite dark. Patrons are mostly teenage locals. In less than 5 minutes after sitting down with a beer, a drop dead gorgeous young girl (early twenties, local, model quality) joined our table and ask for a drink. She ordered the Vitamin C orange juice thingy. After the drink arrive, the next thing she ask me to buy drug for her (esctasy pill). She ask for 150k and she will go buy the pill, after that she will follow me back to the hotel. I was being cautious (sure would be a good deal if she is for real) and after asking my friends, I didn't take up her offer. Told her I need to work the next day and gave her my number. My friends were also surrounded by a few gorgeous ladies but we didn't bring any back. Two days later the girl did sms me and wanted to come meet me but I didn't entertain.

So, just want to know anyone here have experience bringing out those girls from Millennium or Stadium and specifically those girls that are into drugs. My friends told me when those girls are high, they can go on in bed for the whole night. But there is always the risk if they actually team up with the police to trap us.

The problem with that is it's very difficult to get a blue bird taxi to wait for you for any period of time. Most of them do not like to wait. SilverBirds love to wait, but it's extremely rare that I've ever found a Blue Bird willing to wait more than a half hour.

Have you had more success than that? I'm curious how often you've convinced them to wait for you and how you convinced those Blue birds to wait.

When I first came to Jakarta, I'd have a Silverbird wait for me for 5 or 6 hours while I had fun. That's too expensive now. I have yet to find a Blue Bird who will agree to waiting that long. I mean never.

Mighty Spearman has already given the directions to the Malioboro. The Alexis Hotel is on Jalan Martadinata which runs in a rough east-west direction in the north of the city parallel to Jalan Manggadua which is about a kilometer to the south.

The best way to get there from Manggadua is to take a Blue Bird from the stand in front of ITC Manggadua head in the eastern direction and then turn north onto Jl Gunungsahari. Just before the the elevated tollroad, ask the taxi driver to turn to the left onto Martadinata which runs along the Kali Ancol canal and the Alexis is a black coloured building about 200 meters away.

Alternatively, you can approach the Alexis from the Kota bus-station. This makes sense if you are staying in the Bunderan HI (Plaza Indonesia) or Blok M areas and take the trans-Jakarta bus to the end of the line at Kota. You can catch an ojek (motorcycle taxi) from near the Kota stop or from in front of Gabhir stasiun as this is faster than a taxi during rush hour traffic jams. Or you can take a taxi. In both these cases, the driver will have to take the north bound Jl. Pintu Besar go behind the Fatahillah town square and crossing the two canals (that go to the harbour) take the Jl Bandan Raya. This road runs along a container depot/ rail line and then cross the railway line. From this side the Alexis hotel is just after the road crosses the railway line in a complex/ compound with several buildings on your right and the compound can be entered by a gate immediately after the railway line.

The distinguishing feature of the buildng is that it is painted black and can be seen from a distance. It's previous name was hotel Ancol and the taxi/ojek drivers often don't know its new name or pretend not to know. Sometimes if you say Ancol they might take you to the Ancol tourist park which is on the other side of the toll road either because they do not understand clearly or because they want to take you for a ride. So be careful. Insist on "bermeter" or 'argos" and it won't cost you much more than 10k by either route and this is the same fare that the Ojek charges.

The Spa is on the 7th floor of the hotel. Have a great time.

Something still bothers me when I was in Jakarta a while ago. Maybe some brothers here can shade a light on this matter.

I was in Jakarta for business recently – a first-time visit.- and wanted to give myself a treat at the end of the week. I decided that the Alexis Hotel was my destination. I wanted a good, "sure-thing" experience on my last night.

Calling a session at Alexis a "good experience" is the understatement of 2007.

I arrived by taxi and didn’t know what to expect. No one greets you at the front door and I just got into the elevator and went up. I don’t remember if there is a button for "spa" but the spa is located on the top floor. There is a bar or something off the lobby but I didn’t go in when I arrived, and I was definitely not looking for more action when I departed.

Once out of the elevator on the spa floor, you will be greeted by guys who direct you to a counter where you buy a wristband. The wristband is both an entry to the spa and your credit card while you are inside.

In the spa, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. I was stunned by the number of gorgeous women. They are dressed in slinky gowns that show off their figures and my, oh my, what figures they are!

I decided to sit, have a drink, and enjoy the eye candy of course. The poppasan called over some girls who were sitting on a couch. The poppasan worked pretty much like an accomplished maitre d’ wanting me to enjoy a good selection from a wine list. (He even gave me his card.) I chatted up the contestants. coming back after a terrific weekend in Jakarta, some highlights.

KL-CGK by business class with KLM is worth it.
1) Leaving the plane first secures a first place at the VOA counter.
2) Champagne is nice.
3) Waiting for the return flight in the lounge is convenient with lotsa free Gin/Tonic, food, internet and so on.
4) Finally it's just 500 RM more.

The GFE in Jakarta is still unbelievable.
Picked girls in 2 nights from Jaksa and BATS.
400k and 600k respectively. Wonderful LBFM's....

Went again two times in the afternoon to the area around train station Tanah Abang and met an "long time friend".
Well performed BBBJ in a rundown hotel room, 70k for the girl and 20k for the room.

Gents, I just got back from an awesome 3 days in Jakarta and thanks for all the excellent info on this thread.

The City

I was very pleasantly surprised with Jakarta, it is actually a very pleasant city with nice tree lined streets and friendly people, much in contrast to the slum hellhole I had been expecting. The only negative about Jakarta is the traffic which makes getting round the city quite prohibitive.

Where to stay

Stayed at Ambhara Hotel which was recommended on this site and cost 1,000,000 per night all in (a little over $100). It was an excellent choice and it would be hard to do better. It struck me that there is no one place to stay that is absolutely central to everything but this would almost fit the bill but most importantly it is just across the road from Blok M which is where most of the fun was at. It is approximately 10 to 15 minutes from the 5 star nightclubs such as Tigguh Pula, CJ’s and Bats and literally a 4 minute walk from Blok M. To get to Kartika and Alexis it is a 45 to 80 minute drive depending on traffic. 45 minutes sounds far but really is not too bad and anyway I do not think it would be enjoyable to stay in the north Jakarta area where Alexis and Kartika are located. Also Ambhara is only 10 minutes from Kemang which is a great place to start the evening while you wait for things to get going which is typically 10pm onwards.

The Action

Our modus operandi was to do some cultural things in the morning and then hit the spas in the afternoon before heading to the bars in the evening. Alexis was superb, you simply have to try this place if you are in Jakarta. A lot has been written already on this place and it really lives up to the hype, a really fantastic experience and we ended up there on 2 of the afternoons. On the third afternoon we went to Kartika and at first we were hesitant as it is a lot different to Alexis! Once we got our heads round the place it turned out to be an excellent experience. The experience was every bit as good as Alexis but for different reasons, really excellent service and again highly recommended, not to be missed. There were definitely some decent looking girls there although you had to sort the diamonds from the rough. In the evenings we hit CJ’s and Bats and Tigguh Pula for a few warm up drinks before moving on to Blok M. I thought the girls in Blok M were every bit as good looking as the girls in the 5 star bars and obviously are half the price. As has been written, D’s Place and Top Gun were easily head and shoulders above the other bars and there were some beautiful girls there but again you had to sort the diamonds from the rough. Attitude and service from the girls was absolutely top class. Being so close to the hotel you could take girls back early in the evening and then come back for more later on!! Fantastic!! It did seem that the bars were much busier on Saturday night than they were on Sunday but then on Monday they have some sort of crazy night in D’s place which was absolutely brilliant, great fun and really great attitude from the girls (sexy dancing competition and a “Super Beeeeeeevvvvvoooooor” competition, the owner guy was a classic).

Summary

Great girls with top class service, great city. There is a bit of a weekend factor meaning the bars are busier on Friday and Saturday nights. Location is important and Ambhara definitely fits the bill. The most fun was to be had in Blok M bars and in my opinion it seemed a bit pointless to consider looking for girls in the 5 star bars as they are no better looking and the price is so much higher. You absolutely must visit Alexis and Kartika, you won’t regret it. Conclusion: An excellent place to go for partying and mongering, highly recommended. Next time will try to make it to Stadium.

After a long time away from Kota, I went down to Berlian off Mangga Besar last night. The place seems to have been renovated a bit since last time I was there: it used to have a very brightly lit - too bright, really - reception area and a little bar next to it. This has been opened up to create a large bar, a bit more like Kartika down the road.

Berlian always gets mixed reviews. Some people walk out screaming about the old hags, other people like it. It's true that there are a lot of 30+ women there. On the other hand, these older workers do tend to compensate a bit by doing practically anything a client wants: if you ask around, anal, dildos, what have you, all seem to be on the menu. Also, since the renovation, they seem to have brought in some younger, prettier girls, too.

Had a session with Voni, or Foni. Pretty face, nice body, probably about 30. Fun to hang out with, but a little bit prim by Berlian standards. No kissing - well, okay, I can live with that - but no AR, either, and that's a bit disappointing. I've come to think of that as pretty standard in Jakarta. Still, good fun.

The rack rate is Rp 250,000, and a tip of about Rp 50,000 for normal service seems to be expected. Last orders at ten, but things seem to start winding down at nine on a weekday. Voni's phone rang twice while she had her mouth full, so I told her to take a break and deal with it quickly: the ojeg driver downstairs trying to hurry her up. Like a good professional, she told him to chill out and wait or fuck off.

With Melawai now trying to charge a standard Rp 400,000 this seems like a good alternative. I prefer places that charge lower rates so you can tip more: nice to be able to express appreciation for good service.

In all places we can say they are ok depending on what we look for and what's the budget. It's like having your meals in different places. The cost varies obviously. I found these shops (though not looking for it) at Ambassador Mal. The stalls is in between ITC and the mal which is accessable from the 2rd floor onwards. If I am not mistaken it's on the 2nd but it's easily noticed. When you are there, the girl manning the stall would normally find you and the first thing they ask will be if you want ciallis.

Still the range is no where compared to the ones available in hatyai (suntiksut) or the ones available on the website you mentioned.

Yes, I went back to Malioboro this week, and yes, I had a good experience there.

Stopped by at 11:45 am and the girl at the front desk told me that the spa was already open, but that the girls would not come on duty until 12 Noon. No problem, I started off with sauna and shower.

Upstairs at 12:10 pm and was told by the second floor receptionist that the prices:

- for a regular massage-only with a local girl was 200,000 rupiah for an hour, room charge included

- for massage-only with a Chinese girl was 300,000 rupiah (listed on the sign on the counter as a “Panda Massage”), room charge included

- a “full body massage plus plus” with a local Indonesian girl was 350,000 rupiah, room charge included

- there are also higher-priced girls available, up to 1,500,000 rupiah for a fuck session with a P.R. China girl, but I was only interested in the lower price categories.

I replied that I’d like the full body massage. I mentioned that when I had last been there, during Ramadan, that I had been charged an extra 175,000 rupiah for the room on top of the 350,000 rupiah house fee. The receptionist replied that the extra fee was because the third floor (with the massage rooms) had been closed during the month of Ramadan, so the extra charge was for a regular hotel room on the 4th floor, but that I would not be charged the extra fee now because Ramadan was over.

Unfortunately, no girls were on duty yet! The receptionist called one of the “mamis” on the phone; the mami came in and said that one local Indonesian girl had just arrived, literally as the girl was just then walking up the stairs. She looked fine to me so I said “I’ll take her” and off we went to one of the massage rooms on the 3rd floor.

In the room, we stripped down, the girl went into the shower with me and gave me a thorough wash. She then apologized for not having any make-up on (since she had just arrived), but I said no problem, which was true as she was already pretty and didn't need make-up to look good.

No need to hold a taxi all night. You can book a Blue Bird taxi or a Silver Bird taxi (same company) ahead of time. The hotel's front desk can make the call for you, and Blue Bird/Silver Bird is very reliable and will show up on time at 4 a.m.

I've done this (booked either a Blue Bird or a Silver Bird taxi for an early A.M. pick-up) several times over the last two years here in Jakarta and have never had a problem.

And yes, the front desk at Ambhara (and every other 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotel in Jakarta) should have someone on duty all night.

P.S. The differences between a Blue Bird taxi and a Silver Bird taxi: Blue Bird taxis are regular small taxis, where the driver may or may not speak English, and should cost 90,000 rupiah plus tolls (approx. 11,000 rupiah one way now) and a tip to the driver, from the Ambhara Hotel to the airport at 4 a.m.

Silver Bird is a larger and nicer car (the new ones are Mercedes!), the drivers are older and more experienced and will speak at least some English, and it should cost 110,000-120,000 rupiah, maybe a bit more, plus tolls and tip from the Ambhara Hotel to the airport at 4 a.m. Silver Bird is also better if you have lots of luggage, as there's a lot more trunk space than a Blue Bird.

While I rarely if ever take Silver Bird around town, I almost always take them on trips to and from the airport; it's a nice treat and a more comfortable ride for only a few extra dollars, also in case something goes wrong, it's nice to have a driver who speaks English.

Just in Jakarta for 1 day/2nights.

Corporate rate at Mulia, arranged by my host, was USD99. 00 per night. As I wanted NS room, I had delay checking in but finally got upgrade to club floor, 38F. Beautiful room with king bed, free internet/breakfast, and best of all, CJ's just a 30 second elevator ride away. I checked internet rate for a few other hotels, and at the corporate rate offered, don't think I'd stay anywhere less than Mulia's quality/value. Internet was fine, although others have said that they found it slow. Like the girls. YMMV.

Main floor lounge had a great Filipino 5-singer band, with all individual stars, especially the small girl with great pipes. She was dreamy. My taste definitely.

I hadn't been in Jakarta for over 20-years, so CJ's was quite an experience. Thursday went for a drink with a couple business friends, and lots of eye contact from 8's. 9's. Didn't partake due to busy schedule on Friday. Had some great food (Malaysian and Java style. Outside of hotel) in JKT, and wish I could stay another day.

Returned to CJ's on Friday. Quite the scene as I got there close to midnight and packed wall to wall. Hotel definitely GF although ST friend asked me to walk her out to avoid being hassled by the elevator security.

You were lucky to get a decent cewek at this early an hour. Last time I phoned Malioboro to ask what time the girls came in, I was told that it was not before 2pm. Royal Mas MP (same alley as Kartika) officially opens at 11 a.m., and some girls are there by 10:30 a.m.

Super MP also has some girls on duty by 11 a.m., normally very few however.

My suggestion is that you hang around on the sofas in the lobby area and get them before they go in. That way you also save money by not paying for them (they are often in pairs) and buying drinks etc. Obviously it also saves times time and you get straight down to business.

This approach also works much later in the evening when you can get "bargains" if they haven't been picked up already. Of course the standard is likely to be lower.

Just a point on this though; many girls pretend to have a job in order to make themselves appear more respectable and in some sense, it's a way of playing harder to get and getting the price up. Let's face it, if they score in BATS even once a week for a night's "work", why would they have a job working 8+ hours a day, 6 days a week?!

As for other bars than CJ's, the other hotel bars that everyone mentions in the same breath - BATS, Tiga Puluh - is there much difference, other than different sets of girls rotating through? While it might be months before I can get back, Im already planning my next trip. I liked the Mulia, but might try Shangri-la next time.

Think that I should mix it up with other places, to get a better feel for the nightlife here. From your suggestions, I assume that Blok M bars, Stadium, etc. would give a good mix from the 5-star bars. I'm not too adventurous yet, but looks like those are safe for westerners.

The few guys I talked with at CJ's were all visiting businessman, but guessing that larger portion of the guys are ex-pats working in JKT or area? Also seemed to be alot of local (??) Indonesians there as well. Any idea of the breakdown in the 5-star bars, between guys travelling and foreign guys working locally? Is it much different in the other area bars - I know that my local JKT contacts didn't encourage me to go out of the hotel on my own.

I never picked up anything in the Hyatt if only because I only go there for business dinners or lunch and i don't think that they have a Bats equivalent.

As for the question of which is the best pick-up bar, I believe that all the answers are in the reports of distinction, and others, that you may want to read. You will then have an excellent idea of where you should go according to your tastes, time and budget.

The Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha will be on Thusday, 20 December 2007.

Similar to the month of Ramadan and the Eid-al-Fitri (Lebaran) holiday, most free-standing massage parlors will be closed on both Wednesday, 19 December and Thursday, 20 December. This includes places that are combination brothels/massage such as Kartika, Super and Siera and also those places that are massage/HJ places such as JASPA (in Mal Ambassador).

Although the Woodman did not specifically ask me, I'll throw my two cents worth in anyway:

I've never stayed at the Hyatt but it has a reputation for not being a girl-friendly hotel, so you may not have much luck trying to pick up a girl there; it's certainly not a "sure thing" in comparison with other places.

Best pick-up bar? there are many opinions here on this board. The three traditional favorites are BATS, CJ's at the Mulia and Tiga Puluh at Le Meridien (although the latter seems to have gone downhill of late). Many mongers had had success at the Blok M bars on Jalan Faletehan (D's PLace, Top gun, etc.), and there are other places as well where mongers have had success.

Knight 1001 gives good advice - check out the "Reports of Distinction" section of the Indonesia thread.

I stayed there a couple of weeks go during my first Jakarta visit and as soon as I arrived decided to walk down and check out the mall. Went out the front door and down the stairs to the left.

There was a girl positioned right inside through the doors, pretending to be looking at some shop display but she had the roving eye and I had the roving dick.

As for "safety", I've been going to Jakarta for almost 20 years, I've been to some fairly dodgy places and never yet had any kind of problem other than taxi driver's trying to rip me off (easy to avoid).

I would say the majority of westerners in 5 star hotel bars are occasional visitors who probably don't venture far from their own hotel - which is why girls ask, and often get higher prices there. Blok M bars provide more of a haven for long standing expats, hence prices are lower there.

You won't find many reports in here on successes in the Hyatt - there is a bar in there which changed it's name a couple of years ago and I had two "scores" in there out of maybe a dozen visits while I was staying there. The first was an out and out hooker who wanted 300USD for short time which I eventually negotiated downwards to 60USD (still too much). On another occasion, around two years ago I met a group of 4 or 5 girls who persuaded me to buy 3 bottles of champagne (charged to unwitting client). This was a fantastic occasion: in summary the one I finished up with was living in 1,000,000 USD appartment and drove a top of the range BMW. We got stopped by the police as she sped down Sudirmann at 130 kph; she said "don't you know who I am?" - they looked alarmed and told her to drive off. I think that was a "one-off", certainly I've not experienced since!

Mighty Spearsman is correct in that the Hyatt is not very girl friendly even with residents, but as always the problem can be solved with a small "tip".

It's also the case, as Menteng says, that Plaza Indonesia/eX is good for mall hunting and certainly some girls exploit this fact. Certainly many pimps do; they can often be found on the top floor (of PI) after about 8pm, though I wouldn't recommend them as I said in recent report. Certainly there is no problem taking the girl back in to your room - the only time problems arise is if the girl is alone, going in or out. It's also worth remembering that girls who work in PI can also be picked up as well (see pages around 270 in the older Jakarta thread - observant Hyatt guests will note that some photos were taken in a Hyatt bedroom!)

I've made extended stays in Grand Hyatt, sometimes up to 5 weeks consecutive, and never had ANY problems, even with two or three girls.

Bar's name is Burgundy - former O Reilleys. A Martini Chocolate will cost you 150 000 rps. It used to be 'in' and extremely busy on Friday nights, otherwise it was always from semi-empty to totally dead. Don't know about the current situation yet. I've never spotted a hoe there but had sometimes chances with top-level freebies.

Plaza Indonesia is definitely a good hunting ground. La Moda Cafe (which is managed by Hyatt) is the most strategic place.

While I think everyone alway likes to chat up the receptionist at check-in; and there's always pretty high quality there behind the counter. I've always felt that they're pretty tough nuts to crack. Somehow got to get them out from behind the desk!!!! But from now on, I think that's a great first rule to try (Asian 5-stars for sure!).

Waitresses, on the other hand. Used to always go for them and your batting average is surely much much higher.

Thanks for your comments. I haven't been travelling much in Asia, but starting to. I have a mongering friend in HKG, and he's taken me to a few dodgy place in China recently. I hope to try to be more adventurous in my future trips, as I'm realizing that there's much more to be found outside the safety nets of the 5-stars. Always a little nervous about the language, so will have to learn some basic lingo.

It helps if you can speak a few words; I would recommend "Making out in Indonesian" as it covers common usage, some slang and words and expressions which you won't find in a tourist guide (but which you may find useful!). As far as I know there is no such thing as 3 months visa on arrival, only 7 days and 1 month, for USD 7 and 25 respectively. Check the Indonesian embassies websites for eligible countries.

What Knight 1001 says is correct with a couple of points to note: first - the 7 day or one month visa is not available to residents of certain countries (or certainly wasn't when it was first introduced) nor required for certain others, second - note that "7 days" means 6 nights, the arrival and departure days count even if you arrive at 23.59. Same applies to the one month visa (which is 30 days).

You can get longer stay visas before you leave but it's a fairly tedious process and the cost is quite high.

If you over stay (as I did recently because of the "7 Day = 6 night problem", in theory it is a serious offence but in practice they will let you pay the excess: a process aided, as always by having the cash available (US dollars remember) along with a few extra dollars for the guy on the desk.

As Knight 1002 says, it's important to check the Indonesian website.

YM is better in so far as it's real time/interactive. You have to play a numbers game just the spammers and phisers do. Simply go into an Indonesian/Jakarta chat room, run down the list of those in there on the right hand side until you see a girl and send her a POLITE instant message. You will get a reply 90% of the time. You then have two choices: go straight for it in the same way as many tactless bules go for girls for real or play a longer game. The first will deliver the same result: if they are hookers they will overlook the lack of finesse in exchange for income; if they are not you will lose them at once. The chances of their being hookers in YM is in my experience very low so it's better to play a longer game - if you have time. Also the hookers will arrange to meet and then not turn up. If you can engage the girl in polite conversation for more than around 20 minutes you can almost certainly get them to meet you if you offer a few "carrots". By that I mean arrange to meet them in a mall and say you'd like to walk around the mall with them and do some window shopping (jalan2 and cuci mata). I have done this many times - though probably only taken up 10% of the offers I got on YM. In every case (maybe 10 times over a few recent years) I have "scored" having spent maybe 200k on "presents". What Knight 1001 says is correct with a couple of points to note: first - the 7 day or one month visa is not available to residents of certain countries (or certainly wasn't when it was first introduced) nor required for certain others, second - note that "7 days" means 6 nights, the arrival and departure days count even if you arrive at 23.59. Same applies to the one month visa (which is 30 days).

You can get longer stay visas before you leave but it's a fairly tedious process and the cost is quite high.

If you over stay (as I did recently because of the "7 Day = 6 night problem", in theory it is a serious offence but in practice they will let you pay the excess: a process aided, as always by having the cash available (US dollars remember) along with a few extra dollars for the guy on the desk.

all in all a good expeereince and a place to be recommended as real value for money. btw i went early as i, too like might spearman, prefer it when the girls are fresh. as i was leaving i found hordes of young indo men entering, probably after their offices had closed for the day, for their recreation. so going early is a good decision for you get them rested and fresh even though they choice may not be so wide.

I have been following the Jakarta FL scene on a Indonesian website and Im amazed that the locals are presently paying from 300K and above for very plain looking FLs which I wont even pick up from Plaza Atrium and worse still price for overnite starts from 700K and above for very odinary looking FLs. Has the local market prices risen so much. I had also been communicating with some local Jakarta mongerers and they have also informed me that pricing for local FLs have gone up tremendously!

XXL, You paint a dim picture of the current situation. I think you must have just been unlucky. I was in Jakarta all of last week. I took a girl home every night and never gave any girl over 500k for the entire night. I give every girl I take home 500k for the night pretty much as a rule. I didn't take home any girl who negotiated price up front though. There was only one girl that week who wanted to negotiate price up front. Anyway, I was in Jakarta this past November and had a interesting conversation with a free lancer at one of the five star venues. Discussion went on to the difference between a girl that occasionally free lances and a prostitute. According to her, the difference is that a prostitute will always pre-negotiate a price before accepting and leaving with her "john". Whereas the occasional free lancer follows her boyfriend of the evening if she likes him and is hoping to receive some "gift" from him in the morning. If the gift is not satisfactory then she simply chalks it up to one of "life's lessons".

I think this is an Indonesian solution to the prostitution conundrum. I am not a prostitute because I don't ask for money. However, I do expect to have some compensation is a nicely Indonesian way of avoiding the self recrimination of prostitution.

I was somewhat alarmed by XXL's assessment, though encouraged by Smoothy's report with which I sympathise. It's only a month since I was in JKT so I don't think things have changed much in that time. For what it's worth, I have almost never discussed money "up front" and even less frequently have I agreed a figure up-front and taken the girl home. I can well understand why some people do and on the face of it, it makes sense and in theory, avoids problems later.

However, I think there is a very strong correlation between those girls who negotiate up front and those who over-charge and perhaps, even, provide poor service. Clearly they are engaging in a purely commercial transaction and likely to behave accordingly throughout the whole process - including, trying to extract more money afterwards if only for the "taxi", not to mention their younger brother's school fees, their sick parents in hospital etc etc. Even if you don't cave in to that, I think it costs more overall which is what XXL has reported.

Any girl who doesn't discuss money up front is less likely to be a full time hooker and probably therefore less likely to be "mechanical" in her approach. Also at a pragmatic level, even if she is thoroughly commercial, she is likely to work harder to please (including if course, providing the right GFE) in order to justify asking for more than you offer at the end - which understandably, they will always do. I can't recall ever having a problem of any kind by adopting the approach of not negotiating up front; at today's prices I offer on average, 300k knowing that most times, they will imply or say it's not enough whereupon I will increase it to 400 - 600 (max).

And then there is the other category I refer to as "good girls" that have received some coverage recently, those contacted through various websites (I have used faceparty) and are not "on the game". 1. Open up YM as you describe and on the panel to which you refer, click on "Messenger" on the top left hand corner

2. This will give you a drop-down menu

3. Move down to "Yahoo! chat" and across to "Join a room"

4. In the centre of that panel, select your desired location (Indonesia)

5. This will give you a list of "rooms" in the right hand box.

6. Click on the + for e.g. Jakarta, this will give you an expanded list of 20-odd "rooms", click on any one.

7. This will give you another panel - click on "Enter chat" at top of that panel after it has loaded.

8. You are almost there! Go through the security process which is self explanatory and then you will be "in" the room with the list of names down the right hand side.

9. Click on the name you fancy and send an "Instant message" such a "hello, I am from London, may I chat with you please". Alternatively you can input a message to everyone in the room saying "any girl want to chat with bule man from london". I just wanted to share with you guys what I have found out from a girl that I have met through a dating site, and happens to be working in a karaoke in nblok M. Seems to confirm that a 300 000 to 350 000 Rups for the blok girls is somewhat fair, if what she said is true. But maybe some of you who frequent those places (I do not) could cross check that.

It seems that when she works all night, from 8 pm, (but in fact she has to be there by 6 or 6:30 to be prepared), till 2am, she only is paid ... 15 000 Rupiahs if she deosn't get any customer. I thought I misheard ... but no, that is what she said.

If she gets a customer, she is given 5000 Rups per cocktail she orders and in a good night she can get (from her boss) around 100 000 Rups overall. Of course to which you have to add the potential tips from the customer.

It is no wonder that to make ends meet, these girls have in fact to accept to have sex with the customers, not necessarily in the place but usually outside.

It seems that the prices for the room in the karaoke for the evening are 165 000 Rups and the cost for the girls presence is 37 000 Rups per hour, minimum charge 3 hours.

Total cost was about 1,050,000 for an Indonesian girl (makes no sense for me to pay more to get Chinese as I will be flying back to China shortly). Seems to confirm that a 300 000 to 350 000 Rups for the blok girls is somewhat fair, if what she said is true. But maybe some of you who frequent those places (I do not) could cross check that.

If she gets a customer, she is given 5000 Rups per cocktail she orders and in a good night she can get (from her boss) around 100 000 Rups overall. Of course to which you have to add the potential tips from the customer.

It seems that the prices for the room in the karaoke for the evening are 165 000 Rups and the cost for the girls presence is 37 000 Rups per hour, minimum charge 3 hours.

I went by one karaoke bar and just asked questions to the person who met me when I came in. He showed me around the different rooms, that some come with extra rooms with showers and I believe beds. He explained that there was a price per hour for their rooms but a minimum booking is 3 hours. The women were 400k at this place for them to sit with you. I asked him what the women got out of that and he told me they got 60% of it, making it 240k at that bar. The woman would stay with you for the duration of your visit. Don't know what cut they get out of the drinks and stuff. This was for one particular place in Blok M, don't know what the average place there is doing.

In terms of finances, what you say is true for just about any girl working at a low-skilled job in Jakarta. Working 9-5 is only going to get you about Rp1m/month, which is pathetic for anybody putting in 8 hours/day of labor. What I can't figure out is why some of these girls bother to work for "chump change" when they can go out with 3 bules a month and net out the same - or in many cases - much better...
I've also often wondered the same question, and after 3+ years of mongering here, I can think of at least a few reasons:

1) Financial Security - unless the girl is a stunner, there's no guarantee that she'll go out with at least 3 bules a month. She might get lucky some months, while other months she might strike out. Working 9-5 at a mall, or a karaoke bar, or wherever, guarantees at least a minimum amount of money to pay for food, housing, pulsa for her cell phone, etc.

2) Social Aspect - Indonesians are among the most social and group-oriented people I've ever met, and I've lived and worked (or at least visited) over 75 countries in my life. If a girl has a job, even a do-nothing or do-little job, she still gets to socialize with others, which beats hanging around doing nothing. Remember also that most of these girls live in a one-room apartment, usually shared with others, in a crappy neighborhood, with a common toilet down the alley - hardly a place that's fun to hang around in all day.

3) Possibility of the "big hit" - working 8 to 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, increases the opportunity/possibility to meet a bule who might be their "Prince Charming," or at least increases the possibility of finding a customer for the night. Just read the reports here on Bulai69 and other mongers picking up SPG's and other mall shops employees to learn how easy it is to hook up with these girls

4) Self-Image and Reputation With the Family back home - as has been written here under the topic of PTP-versus-freebies/amateurs, most Indonesian girls have a lot of pride and would rather not think of themselves as prostitutes. So, having a job, even a low-paying job, provides a cover of respectability to their lives. My experience is that, while not all of them, most of the girls would rather be happily married and in a stable home situation instead of hitting the bars or working in a MP; the reason why they are out selling their bodies is that they need the money to support their kids/families back home, etc.

I thought as much until one Maribaya girl confessed giving half of what she kept to a mamasan; in other words what she was left with was a quarter of what you handed out to her at Maribaya. You paid her 400 thousand in 6th floor and she took no more 100 thousand home. You never saw a mamasan at Maribaya's, neither did I for no mamasan ever sets foot in 6th floor. What had happened is that a mamasan had introduced (= brought over) the girl to Maribaya and that seemed enough to entitle the mamasan to half what the girl would ever get out of Maribaya. This recalls the pimps who tour the countryside to spot good-looking girls and buy them off from their families, except the role of the mamasan here is much more modest, consisting in little more than coming across the destitute girl hanging out around Monas at night and convincing her she could make good money "working". That was enough for the girl to have a "debt" ("utang", an ominous word in Indonesia) towards mamasan. As far as I know such debts never get paid off nor is any actual amount ever put on them. "Ada utang" (you have a debt) is as much a threat as a reminder of a financial liability.

In kota knocking-shops girls get nothing, not even food. In Sari Ayu (Pangeran Jayakarta), Mala, a girl remarkable for her Brazilian-grade tail-end, insisted I should tip her 100 thousand instead of my usual 50 thousand because "her menstruation was coming". I was puzzled, if anything her impending menstruation should have induced me to tip her less since she would be unavailable until my departure from Jakarta and any extra tip would be wasted as an incentive for good service. Then she explained she had to save tips ahead of her week off menstruating because she needed some cash to pay for food. Having been a gold-mine to her owners for the past two years has no even entitled her to free nasi goreng on her days of idleness.

If I were a Jakarta resident instead of a very occasional monger with not a day to lose, I would try to stick to mall-hunting so that as much as possible of my money would go to the girls. It costs me little to say this since I have (alas) no prospect of ever becoming a Jakarta resident.
