I have not been to yogyakarta for about a year and a half but I can share my experience
there are many houses in the residential areas behind jalan malioboro near the mall and train station, you will need help to find these. I took the head becek (pedicab) driver in front of the hotel mutiara and he took me to about 5 of them. quality not that great but at the last one I got the most beautiful girl I have ever had. the going rate at that time was rp250,000 for 3 hours for take out. that seemed to be the going rate at all the places but they tried to get rp400,000. mamas name is lenny ph 0274-522-380 you may have a harder time if you can't speak bahasa indo. you can try to go to FM cafe on a side street near malioboro mall which is a expat kind of place and find some help. I met a guy named sandy there and he seemed to know about the scene and speaks very good english.I did not use him to find chicks but he gave me a ride to solo and he was cool enough. Yogya is crawling with hot chicks and if you play the game right you can get them to your room and just give them some money in the morning rp100,000 to rp200,000 is plenty. try hitting on the sales girls in the department stores travel agents whatever.

make eye contact and smile all the chicks. this works at all the cities I have been to in indo. I have been amazed at how easy chicks that don't seem slutty at all are to hook up with. I have heard of a place called Corona that is a house with a huge selection of chicks. Tips for Tarakan.
Essentially try a KTV and you could find a WG pretty easily.
Other than that ...if you're an absolute dummy, you could go to the Bahtera, its a hotel (practically the biggest on the island), the disco has a fairly large selection of escorts to choose from, you choose them by looking through a rectangular opening in the wall. Its at the corner of the pitch black dance floor, you cant miss it.
The mama-san will be there to guide you through to as to how much. These may be pricey for local standards but cheap for foreigners, this is after all the land of the USD 1.50 s*rew (thats a f*cking myth).
This may be difficult if you are white, since the price goes up based on skin color.
Do negotiate. I have skin like a buffalo and bargaining skills like my grandmother and in my experience bargaining almost always works and in some cases expected. Whatever you save you can always give later as tips.
Price for her company is one amount, her time in your bedroom is another.
If you are a foreigner the price is ALWAYS inflated, remember that their normal local customer earns less than USD 150.00 a month.
Outside the Bahtera, just accross the road is a three storey building, the girls there just wait outside their doors. That is suposed to be a cheap place.

I was very much a ST customer so I can only comment on that.
ST you should be able to get for RM40 to 50, if you're foreign looking like I am be prepared to get pricees like RM 70, which is f*cking outrageous.
If you're in the Bahtera arrange for the in-house massage service, the initial massage fee is only about RM 20 - 50 depending on length of time, after that you pay about the same for extra services. Like I said before be prepared to be overcharged if you're a foreigner.
You get to Tarakan by either ferry (Indomaya) or plane from Tawau. The ferry fare is roughly RM 70 something for first class, the air conditioning on the bloody thing is hyperactive so wear a hat and wear a sweater (this is the only time you will need it unless you spend time in the middle of the jungle at night).

I live in Balikpapan. The main places are the Pinisi disko in Hotel Bahtera smack in the city centre, and the Borneo Pub in Hotel Dusit. Pinisi girls are the cheaper ones; they are often loaded on Xtcy and not my type, thus cannot give any further info. I like the Borneo Pub and the girls there more. Girls are well-behaved. They range from 18 to 40+, from (super) professionals to naive newcomers and free-lancers that need to somehow get their childrens' school fees. Mind that, as anywhere in Indonesia/SE Asia, quite a lot of girls are not females!
Prices: anything between Rp 200,000-500,000 (about US$22-55) for a night; prices go a bit down towards closing time. Two girls for Rp 400,000/night is possible. ST & street girls are much cheaper, but the latter don't speak english.

Other places: Luwai Bar in Hotel Benakutai (OK, but less choice, and the bar is dull); the bar in Hotel Bahana Surya (a.k.a. Blue Sky) even less choice and boring; the bar in Hotel Gran Senyiur (veeery quiet and expensive); Martha's and Joyce Places (next to each other, more for the late afternoon/early evening). And of course along the roads ...

Sorry, was a bit too busy to visit the site. Hope it's not too late.
To be frank, I don't know any details. But I've seen ladies along Jl. Sudirman/Jl. Minyak near the 'monumen'. And along the darker stretches of Jl. Tandean.
However, the road between Hotel Bahtera/Pinisi Disco and Hotel Benakutai (cannot remember the name), parallel to Jl. Sudirman is sports a lot of small brothels with the girls hanging out on the street. Mind you, it's also Balikpapan's most criminal area, lots of drugs, pimps, etc.
And I'm sure around the harbour(s) must be ladies (Kampung Baru not far from Hotel Bahana Surya a.k.a. Blue Sky).

Be careful in Pontianak. Was there some 10 yrs ago. Religious fanatics roamed the streets even back then, and it doesn't look that that has subsided since (on the contrary). Boring town anyway.

Am not a regular visitor to this website, hence my late reaction.
Indeed Balikpapan is peanuts compared to Jakarta: for Caucasians just 1 major, safe pick-up bar (Borneo Pub, Dusit Inn Hotel), 2 or 3 secondary (Luwai Bar, Benakutai Hotel, the bar at Bahana Surya Hotel, bar at Gran Bumi Senyiur). One very major, but much less safe site: Pinisi discotheque next to Hotel Bahtera (100m from Hotel Benakutai). Pinisi is very, very smokey (even for a heavy smoker), very, very dark (the 'lady' courting you could very well be a 'gentleman'; you would see the difference only in the lobby of your hotel), and very, very much the centre of the local drug scene. Next there are plenty of karaokes; most taxi drivers can bring you there (Mawar Taxis: [0542-]412525, flag fall Rp 3,000 but minimum charge 10,000; Kalung Mas Taxis: [0542-]732222, flat charge within Balikpapan Rp 20,000).
Security at Borneo Pub/Dusit Inn hotel is reasonable up to standards, and certainly best in Balikpapan. Standard: ladies may not initiate contact, unless very clearly 'invited'; no visible or invisible fights among ladies if a patron chooses to change services, even after 'lasting' relationships. By non-compliance: blacklist. Borneo Pub is the only bar that charges Indonesians an entrance fee ('reimbursed' in drinks) thus selecting 'serious' ladies who dare and can "invest" in a business opportunity. Hence the queue of ladies at, or near, the entrance: all trying to get a free entrance on the arm of a westerner. If you feel generous: take 1, 2, 3 and enter, then dump them if you don't like them; no harm or costs to you.
The non-standard part of security: reasonably, and for Indonesia: amazingly, tough car checks when rolling in: interior inspection, mirror inspection of car underside, sometimes even have to open the hoods and doors. Well, that is: in 'tense' times like Christmas, New Year, Eastern, Muslim Fasting, and during certain armed conflicts (like now).
Ladies at Borneo Pub vary from the long-time experienced professional, to (on occasion) a brand-new beginner rigth out a remote village; from 45+ to 18-; from occasional freelancer seeking to get money for school fees/a colour TV, to freelancers out for fun, to ladies looking for a 'marriage contract' for 1-3 years (at anything between US$10,00-50,000 [!!!] per year), to the outright innocent ignorant. And just ladies, fed up with Indonesian men, looking for a real husband (on occasion). And in between some pretty weird characters/preferences ... . And any combination of the above.
Most ladies have a mobile/handphone (sometimes getting quite a number of calls when 'engaged' to you; but, with imagination and patience you can turn that in a lot of exiting fun ... ). Could provide a good handful.

I stayed at Dusit Hotel. It has a night club where a few girls hang around. Don't expect to see tens of desperate girls as in Jkt. Maybe ten girls with their bule friends + 2 or 3 girls who are free.
Hotel massage girls who do traditional massage will also do a handjob for a fee (+ 300 thousand).
Not far from Dusit (ten minute's walk) there's a Karaoke by the name of Shantu or Shanty.
Taxis are a problem, there are few of them and they're about 3 times as expensive as in Jkt.

On weekdays, particularly on Monday, there are few girls. But Fri thru Sun there are plenty. Maybe not as desperate as in Jakarta, but much better behaved. Continue walking for another 10 minutes after the Shantu karoake, and you'll find the Pinisi disco: plenty of choice, but a bit dark and smokey (make sure you don't end up with a lady-boy!). Better even, stay at Hotel Benakutai or Bahtera next door: cheaper than Dusit but good enough.
Rp 300,000 for a handjob from a massage girl is pretty steep. For Rp 3-400,000 you can get an all-nighter! ST for Rp 150-250,000!
Taxi's are plenty and about as cheap as in Jakarta (see my posting last month) but avoid hotel taxis: good, prompt, but Rp30-40,000 within town.

Lived in Bogor for 6 yr ('89-95). Very little choice. The catch: yes, just an hour's drive from Jakarta, but also from the Puncak Pass an hour further on (to Bandung). About 100-500,000 Jakartans move up the mountai every weekend. And pass Bogor along the tollway. No business, no girls. In short: bring your own girls, or go up the Puncak Pass.
Having said that, there used to be the Barracuda Bar. Bar not bad, but a drugs nest. Even back in '87. Very bad experience there then.
If you don't bring your girls: try your luck at the bar of Hotel Mirah (forget about the bar of/next to Pangranggo I, or the other Pangranggos).

The weirdest sex scene in Java:
About forty kilometers from Solo, in Central Java, is the small, undistinguished village of Sumberlawang. Nothing much happens in Sumberlawang - except once every thirty-five days, every fifth Friday night ("Jumat Pon" according to the Javanese calendar).
On these Fridays, up to ten thousand people gather in the forest around the tomb of some old Javanese king, to pray for wealth, prosperity, and so on. In fact, this happens all around Java, and at each tomb, there is something different you have to do if you want the magic to work. At some, you have to sit quietly without eating all night. At others, you can't take a leak all night.
At Sumberlawang, to make your wish come true, you have to have sex with someone other than your lawful wedded spouse.
The tomb is set on the top a hill and is surrounded by a forest. On the right day, you wander round and it looks like a combination of Woodstock and a Fellini movie, couples shagging on blankets, up against trees, or, for the unduly modest, in these little shacks you can rent out for about a dollar. The whole scene is just completely fucking surreal, with incense and kerosene torches burning, shamans at the tomb muttering spells, traders selling scorpion oil and other aphrodisiacs, small troupes of wandering minstrels.
There is quite a large colony of sex-workers here who stay here all month long, but their main market is the villagers and farmers in the surrounding area. Enough said. But on the special Friday nights, women come pouring in from all over Central Java. And not just sex-workers. Many, perhaps most, are married or divorced women, looking for a bit extra on the side.
When I was there, I ran into a farmer's wife, quite cute in a village-girl sort of way. She approached me, and suggested we go to one of the shacks, and did the negotiating with the Ibu who ran the place. Being able to speak a bit of Indonesian would obviously make the whole thing a lot more rewarding. You'd probably be best to take a car or motorbike, although you could find a ride back to Solo if you wanted. Otherwise, you could, I suppose, sleep in one of the afore-mentioned little shacks.
Well, you can't spend your whole life in the Marabaya Bar, you know.

There's only one decent hotel in Palu. Next to this hotel is a disco, where you can find quit a lot of girls. I can't give you more info about them (price, quality etc) as I had company at that time. But please feel free ;-) to tell us about your experience.
As for Manado, take a walk on the boulevard and you might "catch" a nice GF. Otherwise ask the cabdrivers for Mandala and Merpati, they will understand. That is, if those places still exist. I haven't been there for about 5 years.

Yogjakarta, a great place, but surprisingly not much mention over here about it. After reaching there by the morning flight I checked into Hotel Novotel.After a quick shower, went to Borobudur and then was back by 7 pm. Decided to go for the massage. It's quite risky there as AIDS population is the second highest in Indonesia. Girls are mostly from Menado, fair skin, but they are mostly "left over" from other places. Of course, Java is still the best place.

What is your definition of Kalimantan ?? Kalimantan Island is also known as Borneo. Thus, there are 3 seperate and distinct countries on the island of Borneo. Stayed in Novotel in the city. Not to be confused with Novotel in the city of Solo, about 40KM away. They have massage service (in Spa or in your room) from 7AM to 11PM. There is some action in town but is quite hard to find and totally invisable during ramadan.

Awaiting good advise.Diving is far better than Bali but night life is not. For hunting you can try some of the dico's but my favored alternative is GP's club in the basement of Gran Puri hotel. Every night between 10.30 and 11.30 a whole flock of girls drop in, that are very willing to stay the night with you or to join you to the karaoke rooms for some rupiahs. In the diving resorts the wildest thing to do is generally drinking bintang.

Where you are going is Bintan International Resort Area.

On arrival, I will usually head to my favourite hotel, Maximillion. There are decent hotels in Tg Balai. To name a few, Padimas, Paradise, Rasa Sayang and Maximillion. Maximillion hotel is the newest among all. The rate is somewhere about Rp 200,000 for a night for a standard room. After checking in and leaving my baggage in the room, i will head straight to get the Girls. There are 2 popular places to get them. Vila (Villa) and Ruko (Rocko, hmm!! reminds me of that popular porn guy). Prices are the same range for both places. Depending on how new is the girl. Usual range is from Rp180,000 - Rp250,000. If you were to come by Ojek, the prices are higher by Rp50,000 - Rp 70,000 due to the commissions. I usually take the hotel taxi, why? because hotel taxi drivers are forbidden to receive any commission from the brothels or they will get fired.
There are about 30 houses to choose from. Each house has about 30 girls. After paying for the girl, you will head back to the hotel first, the girl will come shortly. Remember to buy condoms as they do not provide condoms. Unless you are willing to take the risk. It's easy to get condoms since all the shops are closeby the hotels. When the girl arrive, do your thang!!.
At night, activities are OK. 2 famous discos in Tg Balai are Santana and Bravo. Don't know until what time it is because there is once i left Bravo at 4am and the music is still pumping. In Maximillion there are also Karaoke on the top floor if you are not into discos. Or, you could just stay in your room and do your thang!!.
Next morning, the girls usually leave at about 8am. It is common for you to give tips. The normal rate for tips are Rp50,000 and above. I usually give the girls Rp100,000. Let's say if you want the girl to stay until noon. You have to pay an extra Rp100,000. I usally do not extend. I will wait at my hotel room door after my girl left and see other people's girl walking by to go back. If I see a girl that is to my taste, i would offer a ST. It will cost RM100,000 for ST. Rather than paying to extend your girl till noon and the same pussy, might as well i pay the same amount for another pussy. Hehehe!

Hope this isn't reaching you too late to do any good! Manado is nothing like lombok - it's mainly christian not muslim, and reminds me a bit of the phillipines. It's not mongering heaven, but you can reliably meet FLs in the basement club of the gran puri hotel, which is also the best place to stay if you can afford $50/night. There are also streetwalkers after midnight along the main strip near the water (i forget the name of the street, sorry) that the taxi's can take you too, but the women all looked old and ugly when i went to check them out, so i skipped them and went back to the gran puri.
You can also get happy ending massages in your room at the gran puri.
As far as night life goes, Manado has a lot of nightclubs for a mid-sized city, but because it's not a muslim center, the discos (perhaps ironically)arent as sleazy as in the muslim parts of indonesia - a lot of the girls you'll see will just be regular girls having a night out with their friends... Hit and miss for mongering but it can make for a nicer atmosphere than the typical dark boom-boom-boom meat markets in other indonesian cities. And it's something to do at night - many of the bands are actually quite decent. it's mostly a local scene, but you'll probably run into a few westerners here and there.
The diving is spectacular. Check out some of the other islands in the vicinity of bunaken as well...

Teegee's report half a page below your question is quite accurate. i would add that i've never had so many normal non-working girls flirt with me as hard as when i went to makassar/U.P. Pinisi nightclub at the back of the Bahtera hotel is good after dark with plenty of take aways available. There is also a kareoke lounge downstarirs. Joy's and Martha's Bars (they are side by side) also had plenty of options.

It was a short trip, so i only have a few things to add:

howdy do, craigr here with his first newbie pitfall. i planned my first trip through justfares and had planned my transfer to international flight thru lax. you should plan at least 2 hours for that transfer, as the designer laid it out so that you would have to change terminals, go through security again, go through hassles with boarding passes again. long story short, missed my flight and had to wait an extra 24 hours. whee.
so, the flight to narita was uneventful, but the transfer was not. whatever genius designed lax was probably consulted for narita also, as you have to go up and down stairs, through bus systems and through security again to get on the flight to singapore. remember that the nips were supposed to take over the world back in the 80's? anyway, i took a window seat, as it is better to sleep leaning against something.
the arrival at midnight was uneventful, but the disadvantage to it was that the subway stops running by then. at information (english speaking and wonderfully well run) they said that ferries to tanjung balai run from 750am to 220pm and cost rt sing$33. the subway to the harborfront runs at 6am and it takes 1 hour to get from the airport to the harbour.

In my nearly 35 years of mongering, I've experienced a few strike-outs (as have most of us) but never can I recall a situation such as the one you just described above.

I was recently in Dili for two nights - shortly after the April riots, and the place was pretty quiet. The first night I was working quite late, so I didn't get a chance to check out the night life. On the second (and last) night I took a taxi into the "city". I tried to get the taxi driver to take me to some place where I could find a bit of action - he didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about (and I do not speak the local language), so I ended up getting out the taxt and just walking around. I tried to talk to a number of people who were in the city to find the sort of place I was looking for - massage parlour, brothel, and places like that. Very few of them spoke much english and they weren't any help at all.
I eventually stumbled into a place called the "Football Bar" - it's located very close to the ANZ bank in the main business area of Dili. When I entered the bar there were only three other people, all girls, inside (other than the bar staff). They seemed happy to see me and we started to talk, a little. Their english was very limited. They said they were from Indonesia, somewhere near Jakarta. One of them didn't speak any english at all and looked very chinese to me. Anyway, there were no pool tables and very little to do other than drink, listen to the music, watch cable tv that was being projected onto the wall and/or try to make small talk with the chicks. After a while some more girls arrived. They were very happy to see a guy sitting at the bar, but other than a brief hello, a few kisses on the cheek and a little bit of "innocent" flirting, they moved to other parts of the bar and occupied themselves with their mobile phones. I would rate almost all of the girls in the bar as 8+ in their looks.
A few other guys came in from time to time, some of them were obviously very well know to the girls because the girls made a big fuss over them and nearly all of the guys seemed to be able to communicate to the girls in a language other than english.
I made a few attempts to talk to the girls about whether they would like to come back to my hotel with me or go somewhere else for a good time - they didn't seem to understand me or, if they did, they didn't respond to my suggestions and they usually ended up moving to another part of the bar. After about 2 hours of this I decided it was time to go. On the way out one of the girls who spent a lot of time with most of the other guys in the bar rushed over to me before I could get out the door. She asked me in reasonably good english if I wanted a girl for the night. Naturally I said yes. She pointed to the girl who sat near my table for most of the night and she asked if I wanted her. Again I said yes. She said it would cost US$80 for short time and US$120 for long time. I protested that the price was too expensive and I wouldn't pay that sort of money. I kept it friendly and made it clear that I was willing to negotiate. She asked if I was going to come back tomorrow night. I said that I probably would. Then she said "see you tommorrow" and walked away. None of the other girls made any attempt to approach me, so I left.
It only cost me US$15 for about 4 beers, a pack of cigarettes and a soft drink for one of the girls (she didn't want anything stronger - weird huh?).
I think the girl who approached me must have been the "mammason" or something like that. The whole time I was there I never saw any of the girls leave with a guy. I noticed from time to time that some of the girls dissappeared, but I didn't see them leave and I certainly didn't see them leave with a guy. And I didn't notice any of the guys dissappearing into any other doorways or other rooms (I didn't notice any other rooms, but the light was pretty low inside the bar).
Now I was faced with another problem - I was in the middle of Dili, about 8 or 9 kilometers from my hotel, it was about 11:30 pm and (with all the problems they've had here recently) no taxis were running at that time of night. So I had to walk back to the hotel. It was not the most pleasant experience, but I felt relatively safe.
As a mongering venue I would have to say that the place is not all that promising. I think the scene has been spoilt by the overpaid UN and Aussies that are based there or moving through the place. It seems that the only place I could find any action was at a joint where the prices are quite high (by my standards) because they know the clients will pay it. There was no attempt at negotiation and no dissapointment when I didn't accept the offer.

On Balikpapan: Yes, opportunities aplenty. But you have to know where. Try Joy's Bar and Martha's Bar half way between airport and downtown: both have a selection of seasoned ladies sitting every night there waiting for an admirer. But they can also be helpful to hook you up with a younger lass. All of the hotel bars (Dusit, LeGrand, Benakutai) do have an ample supply of FL's, dropping in after 11:00pm. They however are pampered with oil-money and start their request with 500.000 Rps. Room for negotiations to 300.000 Rps overnight is possible.
And not to forget the many normal ceweks in the malls to chat up. But to score with them you need a couple of days and some basic knowlege of lingua locale.

Thanks Botaki. I think everyone knows the accuracy of CNN etc. When I was there last the cops use to use any excuse to get a few rupiah by forcing the bars to close a bit earlier etc.
As for having to know where to look, hopefully it's still more like tripping over them where ever you go.

Labuan Bajo is a sleepy little town on the northwest part of Flores Island. Population is less than 10,000. Most foriegners come here for diving (the SCUBA kind, that is). But I imagine some want to get in some muff diving as well. I was there to check out Komodo and Rinca (pronounced Rincha) islands. These are the only two islands in the world where the Komodo dragons (very large and carnivorous monitor lizards) occur.
Getting there: You get here by boat or plane. You can take a 3-4 day boat ride from Lombok and stop along the way on a couple of islands. Speaking with people who have done this, apparently the quality of the boats is highly variable. Might want to check the boat before purchasing a ticket, which can run as much as 900,000 Rp. one way. One could also fly from Bali - which is what I did. Two or more airlines fly here (Merpati and GT Air being the biggest). GT Air has a flight every day, while Merpati flies only twice a week. It is short flight (1.5 hours) and costs about US$70.
Tourist stuff: There is not much to do here unless you are into diving and wildlife. No tourist spots to speak of in town. There are very few bars in town in as well (more on tis later; some sort of a town ordinance apparently). The only normal bar (other than those in hotels) is one called Paradise bar which on top of a hill near the harbor with a beautiful view. Especially at sunset. This is a regular bar and there are no chicks to pick up.
Hotels: Don't expect any luxury here. The wuality ranges from basic (at good hotels) to very bad (at cheaper places). None of the hotels have a hot shower. Gardena is suppposedly the best hotel in town (near city center). But it was full when I went there. Another good one is Eco Lodge, which is expensive US$50 per night(!) and has only 6 rooms/cottages. I stayed at the "third best" hotel - New Bajo Beach Inn. It is near Eco Lodge and 2.5 KM from the city center. The hotel had very large room and it is indeed on the beach - albeit a wimpy beach. Beautiful views of other islands. The yard is not well maintained and there were cockroaches (big ones) in my room. Electrcity (and therefore A/C) was unreliable. Staff were nice and there is a restaurant/bar (just beer, I think) on premises.
Getting around: There are some bemos here - 1000 Rp anywhere in town. But you can rent motorcycles for 50,000 Rp per day. Just ask the hotel guys. If you stay in the city, you can walk everywhere. If you stayed in one of the hotels outside town, you will need transport.
Action: Limited to basically 3 bars outside town - about 2-3 KM from the center of town. You will need a motorcycle or some other transport to get there as the road is pitch dark and walking is dangerous (there are cobras and vipers here). The bars are located on the road that leads to a couple of "upscale" hotels New Bajo Beach Inn and Eco Lodge. One bar is across from Eco Lodge, another one between Eco Lodge and New Bajo beach, and the third one past New Bajo Beach toward the city. These are very basic bars (thatched roof, mud floor, etc.) and they do not have any names. Each bar has 5-10 women there. I was taken to each bar by people I met in town (tour guide, basically). They came on their motorcycles and picked me up from the hotel and I paid for all the beers. And of course, they translated as well because no one in the bar speaks english. Many people in town speak English as they deal with tourists. In fact, unlike most of Indonesia, 85% of people here are Catholic, thanks to colonization by the Protugese.
You can take out (at least some) the girls and some bars may have a room on premises. There is no barfine. The bars were not crowded when we were there. Just a few guys and very loud and annoying Karoke music.
In any case, these guys told me the best bar in terms of quality of women is the one across from Eco Lodge (the fartherest from town). We went there the frst night. There were about 8-10 women. We talked to a few and it seemed like all were from Lombok. Many were young - 19-22 range. One girl really stood oout - she is of course from Lombok and only 19. My buddy asked her what it would cost to take her out and she said she does not go with customers! One other girls said she was on her period and a third gave bad vibes and seemed disinterested. So, first night, we stuck out and left. Went to another bar - there were only 3 girls and many customers. Most of these girls seem more interested in drinking and singing than in making some money. Very wierd. All three bars are basically the same.
On the third day there, I really wanted to get laid - and get laid on Flores. So, we went back to the bar across from Eco Lodge. Had a couple of beer and started negotiating with the girls (my buddy did, actually). One girl wanted 400,000 rp LT. I had just come from Bali where I was paying only 200,000! Talked to another girl (a bit older and chubbier - more Chinese than Malay looking). She wanted 300,000 ST. I was desperate enough that I agreed. The security guy gave her a ride on his motorcycle and I rode with my buddy back to the hotel. Had a good session. No BJ at all!! (I found this very often in Indonesia - the girls are very reluctant to give BJ; yet many will do BBFS. Go figure). There are a lot of reefs here and snorkeling is also great. I did some snorkeling and it is spectacular. I have not seen that much marine life anywhere else.

Having arrived at Solo on Thursday and after reading a report (page 7) about Gunung Kemukus, and also having a lot of time to kill, I decided to go to this place and check out the scene. From Tirtonadi Bus terminal, I took a bus heading to Purwodadi and got down at Barong. The bus trip itself was harrowing, the bus driver had a death wish or what? with him weaving and overtaking traffic at will. I understand now, why traffic accidents in Indonesia can be humongous and deadly when they do happen.In spite of the "gut wrenching" journey, I arrived safely at Barong having paid Rp4000 for the bus trip. I took an ojek then to the Kemukus complex for Rp 15,000. Of course you could also take a taxi directly from the airport which would costs you Rp 150,000 (direct to Kemukus complex). You could also take an ojek (motocycle), to the Kedung Ombo lake and cross for at leat Rp1500 by boat to the graveyard. You will be asked to pay Rp3000 tariff at the complex gate. From here, you would have to accent 150 steps to reach the grave. Along the way, you will see many boarding houses (shacks) with some having "cheweks" or resident WLs that could accompany you for the nite.
Gunung Kemukus is a small hill, with a the tomb of Prince Samodra ( a kind hearted Javanese prince) buried atop. Many believed that by visiting and praying to him, they could have their wish fulfilled. People with varied hopes like sucess in business, career etc visit this tomb every day, the maximum visitors being on Friday Pon, at best consecutive seven pons and follow certain rituals. On visiting the complex, visitors need to buy flowers first, meet the "Juru kuncen" at the graveyard's door, blessed by the Kuncen with his prayers and proceeded with praying for their wishes besides the prince's grave. To complete the ritual, visitors need to bathe at a well called "Sendang Ontrowolun" (Samodra's mother) sited at the foothill at midnight. On these pons night, 10,000 visitors from all over Java would converge at this site. Starting Thursday there would be "live dangdut" band and people selling all sorts of things, trinkets, amulets etc. At night there will be puppet (wayang kulit) show and classical javanese music group playing till morning. It will be amazing to see all spaces besides the complex filled up by people, under the trees, on stairways, hence, difficult to move around without bumping into other people. Interestingly and believed by many, on these nights you need to have sex with someone other than your spouse as part of the ritual. So many couples pre arrange their sex meet on these nights or many wives and ladies also seek their own partner and do it in many of the wooden shacks that you could rent for Rp 25000 to Rp 75,000(the better ones) per nite. If you are indecent enough, under the trees also can do. Hence, if you are lucky, you could be approached by one of the "ibus" to assist her in reaching her wish. However, a caution here, on these nites also, all WLs around Solo, will also be in Kemukus selling their wares, hence, your prayer of having sex for free that night might not be fulfilled and you will end up poorer by at least Rp50,000 per ST.
Alas when I was there, it wasnt Friday Pon and I was earlier by a week. Nevertheless, there were visitors(although few) and couples walking to the graveyard for praying and having sex in the wooden shacks. Too bad, I did not have a Javanese calender for reference and timed my visit correctly.
However, I spent two nites over there, being referred by the ojek to a shack owned by Ibu Umie. This divorcee is so nice, she even cooked and washed my clothes during my stay. She even came to my rescue when I was about to be accosted by some local hooligans when sitting at her porch. Hers was a wooden shack with rooms but with earth floor and costs me Rp25000 a nite. Nice bathroom, clean toilet but you'd have to bathe using water kept in oil drums. NO Tv, Karaoke nothing. But, an adventurous guy like me and had slept in worst places elsewhere, sleeping in these shacks were no problem as I prefer the quieter environment. Just to satisfy your curiosity, NO I did not do my land lady but she did find me a WL, for RP200,00 a nite. A young kampong beauty with very little skills (typical of village raised girls). It more of me, trying to help her financially than her being my sex relief. Nevertheless, she was a good company (the reason recommended by my Ibu).
In many other shacks, there are WLs in place besides room. These women are a way off than those in Jakarta in the looks department but you could find few roses among the thorns if you do look hard enough. Nevertheless, I was rescued by my Ibu, and made a quick gateway. Howver, during Jumaat Pon, there will be many local police to ensure visitors safety till morning.

Stay at Sheraton, and only have few hours, suggestion I to take a taxi to the MP opposite bintang senggigi hotel ( approx +\- 5 minutes drive ) this MP is not as good as the one you mentioned in jakarta, this is the only option for you, you can nego there, HJ can do, FJ no available . Do not pay more than rp 150000, this is rates is incld 1 hour massage charge. girl is ages between 25-35. Not good looking one, but pass 6-7 rating, mostly from Java.

I would recommend you ask a taxi driver(i know, that's a 1st!) and get them to take you somewhere. Sengiggi is real small town, so beware if walking around with your partner!!
In Snggi there's a club called Marina, possible to pick up from there, but watch out for ladyboys.

Often I quote prices in USD., just for simplisity. However you will have to change tha moni. 1USD = 10,000 Rp (10Krp)
Makassar Siti:
Once you are in Surabaya and tasted meat in Dolly, you might want to try something else. The nearest island north is Sulawesi and Makassar siti is just 40 min by plane. Many flights daily $25-30. In fact if you just turn up at Surabaya airpot 8am you should be able to pick up a cheap ticket and fly within a couple of hours. Ticket windows are marked on the Surabaya map (see Surabaya section).
There are many army/navy bases with loads of horny, young men. Makkassar is a also a great port siti with many visiting sailors and their needs are well catered for. If Javanese are friendly then Makassarese are even more so. There are also even less tourists and hardly any arrogant and aggressive western women. (sigh…).
If you want meat, you need to go to Jln Nusantara which is near the center of town and runs parallel to the port.
Transport:
Flights from Jakarta, Denpasar, Mataram or Surabaya, among other cities. International flights from Singapore, Brunei and KL.
From Makassar airpot to town. Taxi vouchers are $6-7. Public transport is a lot cheaper and a lot more fun. Connections are good and buses are not as packed as in Bali. It is no hassle at all. Just walk out to the airpot road. Flag down a blue bemo with DAYA written on the window. Fare 3Krp.
At Daya you just stop on the side of the road and they show you to another blue bemo with Makassar Mall written on it. All happens in two seconds. Cost another 3Krp. From Makassar Mall either you walk or take a trike (becak) for max 5Krp to the harbour or siti. Many hotels for $10-20. Accomodation is much better value than in Surabaya (which is overpriced).
Meat:
Some massage/fuck places on Nusantara ($10/pop). Also young, pretty girls sitting in groups next to some tables with lots of soft drinks. Some are very attractive. They will hiss you down as you walk past. Short time hotels are nearby. There also more bars, karaokes, massages in town. Becak drivers will know.
Some girls are very young and pretty, others fat and ugly. All the same price. Makkassar is a very safe, attractive and laid-back town when compared to Surabaya. It’s a joy after the Surabaya chaos. The city has a beach and there are discos and pubs open at night.
Totally awesome place. Nearly all hotels will let your guest in. In fact you will spend a lot of time eating lunch with local policemen, sit next to a sergeant from Maluku in the Karaoke or clink glasses in the pub with a navy officer from Bali. They will look after you. And will happily share their meat as we all should.
Other things to do:
a. Paotere is the old harbour, about 3 km north. Many traditional ships. Becak will cost 10Krp.
b. The siti beach esplanade is nice to stroll on in the evening, watching the sunset.
c. There are also some quiet islands nearby. Pulau Kayangan has a public boat (from opp. the Fort) every 15 minutes for $2.50. It’s okay to swim. You have to charter to the others. All are crowded on weekends.

Getting to the Gilis:
You can buy the trip from agents in Bali or you can do it on your own cheaper.
Starting from Sanur or Kuta:
A. take bus to Padangbai or Perama boat to Lembongan (very pretty, unspoilt island), stay overnight and another boat to Kusumba and then bemo to Padangbai 5km (more fun). Cost around $10 total.
B. from Padangbai the ferry leaves to Lembar harbour, Lombok every 90 minutes all day and night. 4 hour trip. Ticket $20
C. Hop on a tourist bus from harbour to Mataram town. There are always empty seats, for $2.
D. Mataram is a very friendly city. People are very nice. There are also a couple of brothels on Jln Pariwisata, Chakranegara. Worth a nights stay. Many hotels for $5-10
E. Next day take green bemo to Ampenan Terminal 2Krp then blue bemo to Sengigi resort town for 3Krp. Many vacant rooms $5-12. There are discos and some girls doing the streets at night. Also a massage/boom-boom place in town for around $20
F. Next morning the Perama boat leave Sengigi beach at 9am to the Gilis. $7. Beautiful trip.
G. Once on the Gilis, there are shuttle boats between the islands daily for $2
H. Or you can fly from Bali airpot to Mataram airpot for $15-20. Mataram airpot is only 1 km to Ampenan bemo terminal. From gate turn right. Or take moto or horse carriage for 50c to Ampenan. Then change to blue bemo to Sengigi.
I. You can also fly to Mataram from Surabaya or Makkassar (or vice versa). Several flights daily. $30-40. Only 40 mins!

This is a continuation of my FR from Jakarta.
After some work, and work out :) in Jakarta, I arrived at Yogyakarta on 16th Sept night. I checked into the Saphir Yogyakarta hotel, which is just 8km from the airport, and paid 380K for deluxe room. I would never use this hotel again if possible as while the 4 star setting is impressive the staff service is not very satisfactory. However this hotel seems to be a favourite with tourist in groups.
I literally paint the town with my shoes that night, walking from Shaphir to Molioboro road, believe it or not. The town looks a lot safer, perceptive-wise, and cleaner than Jakarta. But the important thing for me is that I could not find any action, and here is the key: just asked the becak (trishaw) pakcik for help. He will bring your to those brothel-houses off Molioboro road. Also, he might also suggest you to visit either Papillion Disco and Hugo Cafe and even offer to bring you there. Becak in this city is cheap: just 5k per ride for a 10 min ride. If you are travelling from one end of the city (say from Jalan Molioboro to Hugo Café), then it should be 10k. If you fancy the taxi, they are quite well priced too. Just be sure to request them to use the meter. Say “argo” before getting into the taxi, if the driver is not willing to use meter, look for others who are ready to serve you with meter charges and are not far from the first taxi, as a rule.
From my discussion with those pak becak you can even find action as late as 3-4 am. I do not know the price and quality of these services, but anyone who are there and lonely in the middle of the night try approach a trishaw guy. I did not find any gal this night and had a good rest.

I had a whole day for myself and so went walking around Molioboro area. Also, I checked in to Mutiara Hotel 1 which is right in the heart of Molioboro Street. This is a very good location and the staffs are friendly, and most importantly it is very girl friendly. The hotel is so silly close to a becak ride away from those Molioboro brothels which are just houses off Jalan Molioboro. Just hop onto the becak and say you want cewek action and let the guy take care of the rest. Just a short report on a boring night in Balikpapan, which had an interesting ending. I am sure all visitors to Balikpapan are familiar with the former Dusit Inn Hotel, now renamed to Le Grandeur. It is basically the highest action location in Balikpapan. Just a few words of caution regarding the hotel: it has gone down in quality since being rebranded. I have no idea what the Novotel there looks like, but it is brand new. In terms of prices, hotel rooms are expensive if you try to book over the internet, even when talking directly to the hotel reception. It pays to know someone who is a regular, as they can get a good "return" price.
Anyway, the evening slips off, the only thing to do is try the Borneo pub, located under the hotel. The bar on a weekday (this being Tuesday) was more or less full of men, trying to figure out if they really needed the quality of girls available in small numbers.
I took a look, saw that most were in the 5-6 range and went for the bar. I was dragged by the hand by an otherwise reasonable looking girl of late 20s, who was intent on getting a guy and getting drunk. I know the girl you refer to as Ety but unfortunately I have no experience with her. When I arrived in Balikpapan she had an expat boyfriend for about 3 years who worked in the oilfield here. I havent previously seen her in the bar without her boyfriend. I have seen her in town recently with a young baby. I booked into the Jogjakarta Plaza about 3.30 on Tuesday. Bored, tired and vaguely cranky, I called for a massage to soothe my tired muscles and maybe get lucky. Its really not easy to wander around these 2 cities looking for girls, especially if you are an outsider. The best bet would be the trishaw men (abang becak). They are ever willing to hook you up with ceweks. After all they do get some commision from the deal. Based on my experience, you get girls easier in Yogya than in Solo. And YY girls are a little cheaper than Solo. However, the going rate for both cities is around 200K - 250K. Solo is BY NO MEANS a difficult place to find what you're looking for! All around the railway station, there are hotels and losmen that have women available - one of the most obvious is called 'Losmen Bebas'. If that's not still running, just ask a becak driver. Even if you don't speak Indonesian, just say "Cewek?" That should do it: give him Rp 10,000 for his trouble. These places are usually slightly lower end, probably around Rp 100-200,000 for ST.
There was also a place called Silir, just outside town, although I haven't been there for ten years or more: another low budget place, with the going rate about $10.
The discos, karaoke places, and a few bars should have slightly higher-end offerings.

Don't worry about fanatics. There are not too many of them and they don't usually bother you. Like it or not, whether you are white, afro or asian, the locals can spot that you are an outsider, a foreigner. They don't bother with foreigners. But the locals know that you have money and more often your money is 'bigger' than theirs. That's when you need to worry - you may be duped to parts with more money than you should.
All in all, Central Java is a peaceful place filled with peace loving people. the girls are pretty too. Most are friendly and approachable, but I have never tried this 'free-bee' thing.
You will also notice that the becak men are very courteous. But, still don't wander around places your don't know. Whip up your sixth sense. Be conscious of your surrounding - you never know. You may not lose life or limb, but if all your money are gone - you may lose your sanity!
If you are really really horny and need instant release, approach the hotel security man. They call this people Satpam. They usually wear white shirts over dark blue pants and a cap. Smart looking guys. They control the ins and outs of the hotel. Ask them about girls and they are always willing to help. I arrived in Banjar early afternoon and headed straight to the Banjarmasin Hotel International. Behind the hotel is a large entertainment complex. A bar, massage area, karaoke and disco are on different floors. Both the karaoke and massage area are open during the day where as the bar, disco and karaoke are only after dark.
Inside the karaoke was a small fish bowl with about 20 girls in it. Most looked to be 20 to 25 and 7+ in looks. When I asked about the price I was told 150k per hour for a minimum of 5 hrs. The mamasan stated several times that this was only for "helping to sing and drink", so the total cost would have approached a million. This may have got lost in translation so if any other mongers have the true details please correct me They were also not allowed to go back to the hotel room. Given that I was looking for someone to come back to the room rather than the karaoke booth, I passed. The security can organize take aways but I was taken aback by the price so didn’t investigate further.
I then used the hotel taxi (90k for 2 hours) to head off to have a look around town. The Duta Mall is a new place and there were quite a few girls hanging around. I was the only bule inside and it was obvious that they don’t get too many white visitors. Some of the girls wouldn’t so much as make eye contact but others were easy to approach. After a while a willing candidate was found and the deal was done (200k ST back to the hotel). She seemed truly amazed that a bule was even in the mall. Looks were an 8 with typical Banjar features. One thing that she insisted up on was that I leave first and she follow to the room. This may have been because of higher kick backs to security if she was seen with a bule. Looks were about 7 ˝ (it was hard to tell in the darkness) and the service was an 8. Beginners BBBJ was followed by enthusiastic sex. I decided to keep her for LT and went to sleep.
At 2. 30 I was woken by the sound of the disco emptying. This is one for future reference as there were heaps of girls flooding out through the car park. In the light you can actually see what they look like as well. . Plenty of 8s and 9s. I’m sure because it was the last opportunity there would have been plenty of takers. Maybe next time. .
In the morning a similar second round followed and again she was really happy with the 300k. Maybe too happy. Longtimers can let me know if this is overpaying for the area.
For those with good Bahasa skills and a bit of time the drive around town showed up the following options to be investigated next time. Both Ramayana’s (lots available but most are reluctant to talk to a bule, no English, get there before the small stores close at 5 pm). Numerous Hotels with Karaoke’s (I didn’t try due to the prices mentioned above – let me know if I got the pricing/process wrong). Hairdressers "Salons" (look for any with blacked out windows, some have rooms other are take away). I’ll advise on these options after my next visit.

Where is Banjar located at? How to get there? TIABanjarmasin is a large port city. Its the capital of Southern Kalimantan with direct flights to Jakarta, Balikpapan and Surabaya (probably plenty more as well). By road its a good days drive from Baalikpapan - dont do it.
Banjarmasin is located in the Island of Kalimantan [Borneo]. South of the border from the state of Serawak, East Borneo, Malaysia.
The best connection is taking a quick air-ride out of Jakarta. Most of the flights are direct flights, approximately US$110.00 for a non-LCC flight.

On a short trip to Palembang recently, I can report that this place is very slow. Perhaps it is because I was there on a Sunday/ Monday. "Zinc" a club with live band does rock but pretty slow going so early in the week. Otherwise, hotel Novotel offers good karaoke (and pool) with a good selection of good-looking chicks. Taking them away is quite expensive I hear (1M+) as the mamasans operating there seem quite aggressive.
Another place which may be worth trying is "Retro", a bar in the Capital building. Went there about 9.30pm but it was too early, the action starts at 10pm.

I went to Jogja last Sept. Nice little town and had a nice time (see my FR in Sept 06). The becak guys are helpful but they normally take you to massage house or brothels near Moliboro.
To find FL go Papillion Disco at around 11pm on anyday...most FL will go this disco first before venturing to clubs such as Hugos or TJ's. Going rate for LT is 250 to 300. Papillion us not far from Moliboro St.

Solo is quite a relaxed and historical city. Wide streets with relatively little traffic. You will enjoy it after Yogya. Many historical landmarks to visit. Also, many interesting mountain peaks nearby. Keeps you entertained for a week.
Safety:
Because so few westerners take the trouble to visit, you might be stared at often and shouted (in a friendly way) " Hey Mister!" "Hello Mister!" but it's harmless. The traffic is very mild and the air is clean. The huge number of "Crazy Screamers" , amplified 1000 times and waking everybody up at 4am at night may bother some light sleepers. But it's everywhere in this country. you will get used to it.

sure, there will be, but generally - those two are not good monger destinations, Bez. Both cities are quite remote and getting out there will take some time.. to Manado from jkt it took 11 hours (for me) hotel to hotel. Ok, the hotel appeared at the other end of town and there were no taxi's at the airport on arrival, adding at least 2hours to the travel time, but still, things can be pretty primitive out there. Great destinations for ecotourism and diving, bunaken/ some beautiful nature reserve close by, but business entertainment - stick to the 4 largest cities.
Also -sure don't want to offend anyone by saying this- but girls in Manado are (only generally speaking) less looking than their Javanese counter parts.. Not so for Ambon, but Ambon continuously struggles with religious turmoil. cheers.

I bought my ticket to Balikpapan, Kalimantan island from Batam. First of all I was very excited because of the low airfare, just 250KRp. As a huge number of passengers arriving on several flights tried to sort out their baggages that were all emptied into one messy heap by just two miserable conveyor belts. I got to know briefly three backpacker boys arriving from Batam but they soon disappeared out of sight. Here I was still in Sumatra and my Balikpapan sex plans seemed far away.

How did that happen? To be truthful the words of Balikpapan and Pekanbaru seem pretty interchangeable to me, almost sounding the same. I could have mixed them up when buying the ticket. At the airport I only looked the flight number and time, being quite unaware of the destination. And the beer of course. As usual, I was pissed early in the morning same as nearly every day. I asked for some directions, walked out to the Pekanbaru airport gate and found the public bus heading to town. Asked two different people just to be sure. The frequent big bus goes to the left direction, you don't need to cross the road. It's one simple trip, fare is only 2000Rp and goes straight into town. Following Lonely Planet's directions found a resonable hotel quick enough. Checked in and went to look around. It was not really a big issue to be at a different place though. You find room. You find beer. You find poossy.
All the same either in Balikpapan, Pekanbaru or Makassar. What's the difference? The search is the real fun and not the pooossy. I figured I had two choices from here on. Either continue to Dumai where is a good "chicken village" at the rubbish heap called "Buang Sampah", or go to Padang via Bukittingi and continue from there to Balikpapan. While considering all this I strolled a bit around town. Once you leave the main road, Pekanbaru is quite nice, quiet, relaxed and friendly place. There is very little traffic in the back streets and. While asking directions from the nice locals. I soon reached the river.
**** Exotic Riverside Stroll. ****
The Pekanbaru riverside is an interesting, wild and exotic place. Lined with ship repair workshops and lots of restaurants. It is easy to become thirsty in that tropical heat and drinking tea while overlooking the water seemed an attractive idea. Soon a very pretty young girl came out to take my order (I have to emphasize that she was not ordinary pretty but rather a sparkling gem with fine body, beautiful white teeth and exotic face) and we got into some (brief) chatting. I tried hard to suggest him to get a proper job, like selling, making or even stealing something. All a lot better then being a "hypocrite, a cop".
We got along well, although I am sure he was still at least 50% suspecting that I might be a "Dukun". But the mad villagers witht the sharpened axes failed to materialise. When I was about to leave he asked finally:. "Do you want to talk with my maid, the girl? I know you like her. "

Upon returning to the hotel I managed to meet a nice taxi driver with a white Toyota. He was a very friendly man from Maninjau (a village not far) and to my question about "pusss-pusss" he indicated there were "many-many". I waited until 7. 30 but he did not arrive. Finally I gave up and opened a beer, then another one. Then around 8 o'clock some quiet knocking on the door. Then knocking again. As I opened it he pushed inside one young looking girl about 20, motioning me to stay quiet. This seemed a rather conservative town and I thought that the reception was very strict. But he somehow managed to smuggle this one in.
I started to argue that we were supposed to go shopping together but he said that the place was too far, too dark, bla-bla-bla. And it was better this way. Pekanbaru is an interesting enough town and the locals are just lovely. Superb padang food is everywhere at dirt cheap prices. So I decided to give it another day. Late afternoon I got into talking with another young man selling ice cream. He seemed very excited and insisted that I must meet his mother who was English teacher and keen to practice with foreigners. Their house was located just behind the shop. Finally she insisted that I meet her "new" husband. That was the real show. The butler went out and this wild black "Borneo man" came in with a big bottle of chilly sauce in the hand. The funniest thing was not him eating the ice cream with chilly sauce. But his age. Hardly any more than 30 years. He smiled a lot but didn't talk much. Mama seemed quite pleased with herself, showing off before the foreigner. As I said before her age was at least 60 or more! I tried not to smile too obviously. But it was all just so funny. We sex travellers get to met such an interesting variety of lifeforms. It is worth a lot more than the fuck. Fuck is really nothing. But the journey is the real reward. I am sure you all agre.

Luckily the taxi driver didn't turn up with another hairy girl that day. We experienced a superb tropical storm in the evening. Water falling like a solid wall. **** Trip to Bukittingi ****
The minibus was too early by about half an hour. But they waited for me to finish packing. After a short trip to pick up more passengers we changed to a better quality bus with real aircon at the company's office. To my joy all the other passengers were guys. The presence of even one woman does inhibit men, but having none aboard made us quite free. Not having to conform. One woman with her kid got on about half way but only rode with us for an hour and soon left at another village. We had a lovely club together. Most other passengers were going to Padang but I was to get off on the way at Bukittingi. We had plenty of space with several empty seats. Got along particularly well with one young and another middle aged man. Both from Padang. We kept smoking cheap tobacco all the way and talking BS.
Of course very soon they asked: "Are you married yet" Upon the negative reply one guy was quick to mention that he knew lots of girls in Padang who wanted to meet foreigners. Then the other cut in that he knew much better ones, more beautiful. We had great laughs. They both insisted that I take their phone numbers and call them when arriving in Padang a few days later.
The journey is very scenic on winding mountain roads, through jungles. We also got a few long breaks for food, pissing, etc. Maybe too long as the trip extended out to about 7 hours. I just checked in to a hotel that seemed reasonable from the outside. Bukit Tingi means "high plateu" and the climate is so cool, there aren't any mosquitos. There is a lovely and huge market in town, many-many cafes, restaurants and the whole place is very casual and interesting. Also lots of tourists, asians, westerners, backpackers.

You never know so I just took a few, adding to the collection.

It was getting very late and I started to search for some taxi to take me "pussy hunting". I waved to a few but they wouldn't stop. Obviously already occupied. Finally sat down in front of some large hotel, hoping and waiting. Waved to several cabs until one stopped. All I said to the driver."Mau cari cewek" (looking for girl) and he understood. Made some quick calls on his handphone and said let's go. But I insisted to know the price first for "short-time". He said 300KRp ($33). After a short trip we stopped in front of a darkened house. No trace of life. He knocked. No answer. He just shrugged his shoulders in disbelief and we drove a little further to another darkened house, with a little light inside. They had three girls sitting around. All doable looking, young and not fat. I asked the boss if they had kids yet and he said no. Then I wanted to see their teeth because wouldn't like to fuck something with crooked teeth. It must be quite normal question here as the boss ordered them to smile.
They all had reasonable teeth. Then I asked to confirm the price again. The boss says 300KRp. What? ! I got very annoyed because of the driver's promise of 150K. Boss says."Not possible". I turned around, waved to the driver and was about to leave when the boss says 200K. But I just kept insisting on the driver's promise. While leaving I expected him to come after me with accepting the 150. He didn't. And I did not turn back for the 200K offer. Even though afterwards it still still seemed a good deal as it is just 800B in Thailand money and the girls were all good looking. Maybe should have accepted it. But I was too angry at that point.
We returned to the hotel and this was the end of day one. The trip was very scenic and exciting. The rest of the action was okay. The fuck is not that important. But at least I tried.

**** Friendly locals, lovely trekking ****
Admitting the obvious scenery of the place, there is one annoying hassle. The noise. I looked several hotels but all are either next to a mosque or a road. And the place being extremely hilly, those small motorcycle engines emit such a horrendous noise negotiating the ups and downs that finding a quiet place is very hard. Even at night. But if you keep looking you might find one. I couldn't, so decided to limit my stay to maximum a couple of days.
All locals are just so friendly in Bukittingi and around. They say it is a custom of the locals the "Minangkabau people". Possibly too friendly even as you will not be left alone for more than five minutes. Someone will want to chat with you. Also a lot of people speak English on a high level here. And once they find out that you can speak Indo someone will costantly want to chat with you, or sell you something everywhere you go. It can be a fine thing if you like it. After a while you may miss Thailand though, where the snobbish Thais at least leave you alone most of the time.

There is a famous silversmithing area nearby Bukittingi and apparently a scenic pathway leading to it. So I set out to spend the day discovering Koto Gadang village. There are not really any good maps and the track is unmarked. You will have to ask directions all the time. On top of that the road divides in so many places that more likely than not you will still get lost if you go alone. But there are houses and small villages all the way and the locals are too quick to help. You just can't get rid of them. They want to be your guide from then on. Possibly for some payment later on of course.
The road divided into five paths and I just had to ask someone. I saw this young man walking past and he pointed to the left. And casually kept following and chatting. Like many locals his English was quite good. So we walked together, talking all the way. He suggested that we take a quicker route through the rice fields. I had to decline on that. I like to see a solid marked road and not wander around in peoples rice fields. If he decides to run away then I am fucked, lost for good. So we sticked to the road and me taking notes of the way. Still, even on the main path it is extremely scenic and serene place. Green rice paddies, waterfalls, sheer cliffs and lots of palm trees. Very beautiful. Beats fucking a woman, any day.

And am too old to learn now. So, I said."Sleeping! Just sleeping. " Left some small money on the table and continued walking. Arrived back dead tired. It took great effort even to open a bottle of cold beer. What a good day though! Better than fucking.

Bukittingi was immensely interesting but not much happened fuck-wise. Padang besides being a rather rotten town, turned out to be more action packed in that aspect.
*** Padang city ***
To get to the Bukittingi bus station I had to take an Opelet for 2000Rp. From there are plenty of departures to Padang. No timetables but large buses leave when full (as usual in this country). The trip takes 2-3 hours and costs 10KRp. The bus drops off passengers at the outskirts of town but again opelets are already waiting and you pay another 2000Rp to the central Pasar Raya ("Main Market"), Matahari S/C area. This bus ride is another very scenic journey via the mountains. You get to see lots of vulcanic lakes and other wonders from the window.
You can also fly to Padang from Pekanbaru, Batam, Medan, KL, etc. The brand new "Minangkabau Airport" is a lot further than the old one. But there is an hourly public Damri bus which costs only 26KRp. It is aircon and very comfortable, running between 6am amd 8pm. Otherwise a taxi cab will charge 80Krp.
Padang does not excell in terms of accomodation. Most hotels are really old, crappy, overpriced and even so fill up fast. Hotels around here usually stipulate that only married couples can use the same room (just as in Pekanbaru and Bukittingi). I got a rather miserable small room but there was simply nothing else central available. On the other hand, have to admit that the food is good, well priced (this is the home of the famous "Padang Cousine) and the locals are very friendly. Also lot of them speak English and will want to practice with you. Men and also. Young women. Be warned. So, if you don't like chatting all day with lots of cute university students then better not come here.
In the afternoon I wandered around town a bit. There is a windy, dirty, rocky beach bordering on one side. Otherwise the traffic is chaotic, plywood ghettoes are prevalent everywhere as is a huge multitude of beggars. It is not a very scenic or attractive city. So, I took great effort to get out as soon as possible. Searching for air tickets to some more reasonable destination. I found out that there are no direct flights to Balikpapan. Neither to Surabaya. So I managed to get one seat the next day to Jakarta only.

It is also a rather conservative and repressed city (at least on the surface), just like most of Sumatra. The selling of "puss-puss" is all prevalent but always complemented with a "hush, hush, be quiet" attitude. As night fell, I decided to approach one group of taxi drivers near the Matahari in search of "chicken meat". On the way there, nearly at the Matahari S/C I had to pass a bus shelter and one young girl was smiling out in a very obvious way. Saying in English: "Hello, how are you? " I also noticed one old mama sitting in the corner. Have to admit the the girl looked pretty, but got me unaware and I did not stop to investigate this time.

Airport
Possibly the most conveniently located airport in Indonesia. You can walk there (about 2hrs, one straight road), or take cheap public transport. The minibuses (also called "taxi" here) are not as crowded as in Jawa and you will have plenty of space to put your bags. Walk out at the gates, a few meters from the arrivals area. Stand on the side of the road (no need to cross). Hail a green minibus #7. Pay driver 2500Rp on exit. Change at Damai terminal for yellow #5 (#6 also okay) minibus. Get out in center of town, when you see the "Matahari" and "Plaza" sign on left. Pay another 2500 Rp to driver. You arrived in Balikpapan city. Many hotels are in this area. On either side of the road and on Jln. A Yani.
Or a prepaid taxi cab from the airport costs 35KRp for the 7km trip to town. But it's not as interesting as riding the local bus.
The airport terminal building is very small and crowded. Everything is close by and easy to find. Otherwise there is a helpful information counter at arrivals and they speak English well.
Flights from Jakarta or Surabaya to Balikpapan cost 4-500KRp and from Banjarmasin 300KRp.

Balikpapan town:
You will notice that the roads are wider, cleaner, greaner with less cars than in Surabaya. Balikpapan is very spread out and you need some sort of transportation to go most everywhere. Fortunately the public transport system is very good with easy to follow routes and frequent services. Fares are reasonable 2500Rp for shorter distances and 3500Rp to go very far. I personally don't know where the fares change so I give 3500Rp every time, except for very short hops. Public transport routes are numbered, eg #2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc. To go to the airport you would use #5+7, to the Batu Ampar bus terminal (Samarinda way) #3, to the "chicken village" #8, etc. Various colored minibuses run these routes and the locals call them "taxi" (equivalent to the Bali bemo).
Metered taxis are also available, but are hard to find. They do not circle the roads as in Jakarta or Surabaya but rather wait for calls at various terminals such as at the BPP Plaza and a few more places. There are only 3 taxi companies. Other good places to find cabs are: old cinema on Jalan A. Yani near Mirama Hotel, near the Novotel, some other large hotels.
There is also "ojeg" motorcycle taxi but these are not uniformed and can be hard to recognise.

Food, beer
Padang style food is widely available. "Chotto Makassar" (buffalo soup) is also very popular. BPP Plaza has two excellent bakeries and the main roads are lined with restaurants of various kind. Excellent, cheap night markets are found at Damai Bus terminal and at Pasar Klandasan just one kilometer east of BPP Plaza.
Beer is not available at the supermarkets and is actually quite hard to find. Some Chinese restaurants have it and also a few grocers. But some only sell it warm. The only available brand is Bintang. Forget about other types of alcohol while in this area, except in the expensive coffeeshops of large hotels.

Ask for a "pake" (pron: puh-kah) which means pocket-deal, including waiting. Running by the meter it will cost a lot more.
The road is excellent and fast. About 30 mins trip. Only the last 1 km is unsealed as you leave the highway. At the gate to the complex you will have to pay 5000Rp security fee. This is a licensed venue and all houses have "Tempat PSK" permit from the state. Also meaning security and legal ages are enforced.
Visual description:
As you pull into the carpark the village itself lies before you on many different levels, like stairs. These stairs are interconnected by several footpaths. The girls live here. Sleep during the day and the place comes alive after 7pm but 8-9 pm is even better.

Transport
Samarinda town is 115 km by road from Balikpapan. It has an airport but servicing only flights to the interior of the island. Either from Jakarta or Surabaya you must arrive by road via BPP.
Frequent buses when full leave from BPP's Batu Ampar bus terminal. To get there you ride the #3 public taxi (fare 3500Rp). The trip itself to Samarinda takes 3 hours at the cost of 20KRp (you get a ticket). No aircon but the windows are open. The bus goes past the 17km Komplek (which is actually at 16. 5km) BTW. The road is very scenic, winding through wild jungles and mountain ranges. As you approach Samarinda town, no doubt you will be taken by it's beauty. It is very exotic, especially as it gradually becomes visible through the trees. Spreading along the river, with her many mosques it seems like a magical town out of some fairy tale. As you cross the final bridge the effect is most spectacular.
You alight at the bus terminal which is 3 km from town. They might want to overcharge you but the fare on an Angkot (public minibus) is 3000Rp. Take the one with the "Pasar Pagi" (Morning Market) sign.
Alternative transport
Your hotel in Balikpapan can book a "Travel" minibus to Samarinda for 50KRp. The taxi fare is not that expensive either, just 200-250K/one way.

Accomodation, food, etc
From close quarters the town is not so impressive but still pretty and clean by Indonesian standards.
Around Pasar Pagi you will find numerous hotels from 70K-300KRp. Rooms are not that great value but for a start you can pick one from the lot marked with "H" on the map until you locate better. This is the district capital and has 3 large shopping centres as well as several really classy international hotels for 500KRp and up.
You can get a really enchanting view from the food court on the upper level of the Ramayana S/C. Otherwise the basic Padang and Indonesian fare is widely available. Near the river and harbour the huge night market is very impressive and clean.
Outside large hotels beer is difficult to find as not many shops stock it or they only have it warm. So if you find it, stock up on Bintang.
The town itself is so much nicer than Balikpapan or Surabaya. Traffic is light and the locals just lovely. Very few farang this way though. During several days of stay only saw 1 (one) other "bule". Needless to say, he was entertaining several women at the night markets.

This is a delayed update. Arrived in TP at 4:00PM (Indonesian Time), cleared immigration and, like last time, I asked for "Rainbow Hotel". Some guy escorted me to the hotel car waiting outside the jetty. Checked into the hotel, deluxe room costs around SGD $50. Threw my bag in the room and took the hotel car to Batu 24.

There also used to be a dangdut bar called the Luky Bar within walking distance of the PAB, but since its been a while since i was there, am unsure wthere or not this is still active - ask taxi drivers for directions if required. just go to the night clubs in senggigi, there's only a few and they're all in the same area, pick the one thats packed (probably the one with the band from bandung). pickings may be a tad slim but after midnight you should be able to find something without too much trouble.
also it's true, asking your taxi driver is usually a decent idea as well pretty much any time you're off the beaten track... moral qualms aside they'll get a commision so 9 times out of 10 they'll be willing, even eager, to help.

I've had several opportunities over the last few years to spend a couple weeks at the Quality Hotel Yogyakarta, now called the Grand Quality Hotel (http://www.grandqualityjogja.com/services.php). While there's a lot to like about the hotel, the WarM Spa in their basement level is an outstanding source of high quality massages, especially any massage in combination with a "lulur" body scrub. I never failed to leave quite happy, and the staff really know their business. On my last stay I found the Spa so satisfying that I never actually got around to visiting any of the usual places. The price of my favorite combo was IDR 258,000 and I'm a pretty generous tipper, so bear that in mind in case YMMV. If you like, you could mention that your friend "Mr. Johnny" recommended the place--but act like a gentleman!

Thanks to the reports of DJ Monger I had some clues to where to find some company in Makassar.

Was only in Makassar for one night, so I don’t have anything new to report, just to reconfirm what Menteng wrote (in February 2006) and what That Asshole and some others have written.
Stayed in Hotel Pantai Gapura, a 3-star hotel, one of three hotels side-by-side in downtown Makassar, right on the water and only a few meters south of Fort Rotterdam (one of the few tourist attractions in this city). The other hotels in this area are the Makassar Golden Hotel (4 stars) and the Losari Beach Hotel (2 stars?). Note: I did not try the hotel's massage service.
1) Becak drivers & houses with girls: On the street outside the 3 hotels, there are lots of becak (pedicab) drivers. All of these guys were very persistent in wanting to peddle me to nearby houses (15 minutes away) where supposedly lots of pretty girls are waiting to be picked by me and brought back to my hotel. I decided not to take any of these guys up on their offer, however.
2) The nightclub “Colors”: is located right next to the Hotel Pantai Gapura, seems like a nice spot, but also seems to be a regular night club where most of the girls are just regular local girls, not working girls. Many of the girls I saw were with their boyfriends, but that could be because I was there in a weeknight. Also, I only stayed until 12:45 a.m. so maybe the place got hotter after I left. Note: I did not visit M Club or Botol Cafe, the two other discos that are often mentioned on this board.
3) Beach road/street action: Just south of the Makassar Golden, the road/sidewalk runs directly besides the ocean, and there were lots of people sitting on the sea wall. I walked here around 11 p.m. and a mid-30ish mamasan who was sitting on the wall stopped me and asked me if I wanted a girl. Instantly, two girls in their late 20s appeared from a nearby café and stood in front of me. I was not impressed with either one so I said no thanks and walked away.
4) Jalan Nusantara: About 100 meters (walking distance) north from the Hotel Pantai Gapura and the Colors nightclub is the red-light district on Jalan Nusantara, mainly low-end karaoke bars with 4 massage/brothels side-by-side in the middle. As Menteng had mentioned, the most well-known one is the Madonna, with the Klasik, Q&Q and the Raja all next to it. Also, as “That Asshole” wrote in Sept. 2006: “there are young, pretty girls sitting in groups next to some tables with lots of soft drinks. Some are very attractive. They will hiss you down as you walk past. Short time hotels are nearby.”
The Q&Q spa had closed its massage section at 9 p.m. so I didn’t see the girls there. The other three places offered the same quality of girls, all sitting on rows of benches in a stairstep arrangement at one end of the room, but no fishbowl, you could go right up and talk to the girls if you wanted to. I saw more cute girls (at least 4 or 5) at the Klasik than at the Madonna or the Raja, but that’s just personal choice and timing.
Prices have increased since Menteng had visited, the house fee for Madonna is now 200,000 rupiah, while Klasik is 125,000 rupiah, both for one hour (I did not ask at the other two places). The price for the Klasik was posted at the counter, the price at Madona was not posted, maybe I was over-quoted as I'm a bule (foreigner).
I am not a Karaoke fan, however I walked into a couple of places to have a look. The karaoke bars are places where you sit and drink with the girl and sing and drink. These places do NOT seem to have rooms in the back or upstairs, although the girls are available for take-out.
5) Klasik: I ended up choosing the two youngest-looking girls at the Klasik and asked them if they wanted to go together with me. One of the girls, Mira, was thin and very pretty but looked to be barely 18 and seemed shy, looking as if she had just started working there. The other girl, Devi, was heavier and not as cute, but ok looking; she appeared to be 19 or 20. They appeared surprised but said yes, so I paid two house fees of 125,000 rupiah each at the desk and we went upstairs.
The room was as Menteng described, fairly basic, with a shower stall but no hot water. There was no wooden door, just a curtain, but there were several hooks to fasten the curtain to the door frame.
As soon as we got into the room, Devi asked if I wanted to use a condom, I said yes, so she ran out and quickly got one. A good starting point!
Once the session started however, the two girls did not seem to know what to do, so I asked them and they claimed that they had never been with a “bule” (foreigner) customer before. I expressed my surprise, their reply was that the place did not get many foreigners as customers. They also told me that yes, they had only worked there a short time and no, they had never worked together in a 3-some (I believe this), they also claimed to be 22 years old (I definitely did not believe that).
The first 30 minutes of the session consisted of a lousy 4-hands massage and lots of giggling and acting shy whenever I tried to kiss them or play with their titties. Then the girls said “Mister, time almost up.” I checked my watch and saw that there was still at least 25 minutes to go, so I pointed to the condom that was lying on the side table and gently but firmly replied “if that isn’t used, then neither of you get a tip.”

In Jogjakarta, I was staying in Metro Guest House at Prawirotaman.

I am planning a trip to Bintan Islands, but cannot find any info on that island.

Sorry for delay in posting. I spent one day & night in jog in late march. Thanks to earlier posts I was able to target possibilities. Stayed at Mutiara hotel , the better of the two located in main street. Very comfortable & also girl friendly.
Walked into Corona at 7pm. Papasan immediately asked if I came in taxi. As the answer was no he advised take out to hotel for whole night was 300k. Anyone with any helpful tips?I've been to Tanjung Pinang (Bintan) a couple of times. You can check my previous reports for detailed information. Basically it boils down to Kilometer 24, which is a brothel village. Go early in the afternoon and you can have your pick. Typical costs are around SGD 50 for the girl and around the same for a good hotel like Rainbow, which has a car service so you don't have to worry about taxis and stuff, the first time you are there.
