going to japan on vacation i was not having high expectations for my mongering activities, especially since there were so many reports about places being not gajin-friendly.

If you're planning a monger trip, I would avoid Tokyo. If you're already there, your best bet is a soapland in Yoshiwara. There are literally dozens of establishments. I'm not sure if they were bending the rules for gaijin, bending the rules for Japanese-speaking gaijin, trying to take advantage of a sucker, or simply trying to take advantage of the potential business opportunity at a slow time. I didn't take down a list of which establishments wanted me, sadly. And I'm not sure how many of them were soaplands, how many were deriho, etc. Just that they weren't pink salons and that they weren't dirt cheap.
I eventually found Hinomaru, went upstairs, and opted not to select a girl, telling the guy behind the counter 'I trust your judgment'. The setting was much more open and well-lit (lots of mirrors) than JanJan, which I was a little uncomfortable with, but the service was about the same. The girl seemed like she was Thai (she claimed to be Japanese, but mine was better than hers). Darker skin, curvy, short. She was reasonably good at her job. The service wasn't quite mechanical, but wasn't anything to write home about. There was a notable odor when she slid her panties aside, so I again opted to finger door #2. I've been mongering in Tokyo for five years, but took my first trip to Yoshiwara just the other day. I entered through the main gate and was promptly stopped by a guy at the information café. He gave me a cool history of the Yoshiwara area and them explained the general market. His explanation went like so:
Budget soap: 50-60 min. 25,000.
Intermediate: 70-80 min. 40,000.
Premier: 120 min. 75,000.
He also explained the 'gaijin tax' was 10K over the normal price for locals, but I think he had included it in the above figures.
He also explained that there are around 100 shops in the area, not all serve foreigners, and that in some of the lower budget places you might get a fat or older lady. He said he would be happy to call up a shop that would cater to my preferences and one of the guys would come down to the café with pictures to choose from.
I already had an idea of the shops I wanted to check out, plus I wanted to just take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood and soak in the atmosphere, and told him so. He said 'don't get cheated by a trickster! ' I laughed, said I'the be careful, and departed.
I walked up one street and down another. Many of the shops had closed doors and did not look inviting, but I was propositioned by at least half the shops that had touts. The touts at the premier soaps were especially aggressive. Most of the shops quoted me two hours at 65, 000-80, 000. I stepped away gracefully by saying I wanted a girl at least 170 cm tall whom I could bareback. The touts seemed more put off by the fact that they couldn't offer me a tall girl.
I stopped to look at pictures at a few of the shops. First was Darling Harbor, which has been featured here before.
