Reasons for the crackdown
I did not see Sailing's orginial message (now deleted) but looking at Mike's quote, the reasons he stated for the crackdown seem a bit wide of the mark. This is a crackdown on foreign sex workers, but not on Japanese ones. Kawasaki and Yokohama (though not the foreign SW disctrict of Koganecho) are still going at full steam with SW of Japanese ethnicity. Mostly off limits to foreign customers, unfortunately.But I do agree it is a political issue rather than simply the policy of the local cops. I am not sure about the causes exactly, but I do know the United States government has been particularly critical of Japan over continued trafficking in sex workers. (Japan is at present desperately trying to show its credentials for a seat on the UN Security Council.) And I also know that nationalist figures like Tokyo Governor Ishihara deplore the recent higher levels of foreign participation in shadier types of activity in Japan.
