I have a free 36 hours in San Diego next month before I have to head up to LA for the week.
I need a hotel for Saturday night out of my own pocket. (I am traveling mostly on the company dime).
I would think that staying in TJ for one night would be safe, but since I am traveling with my laptop and other belongings I am concerned about the safety of my belongings while I am mongering.
Can anyone recommend a place to stay in TJ that is afforda ble, close to the zona, clean and safe?
Or should I just stay at a hotel near the airport?
Thanks in advance.

Stay at the Pueblo Amigo hotel just across the border. It'll cost you about $90., but it is clean and a decent place that you'll find more than adequate. The rooms are safe and your stuff will be OK there. It's a short Taxi ride to he Zona.
On short notice, it's the best bet..
Grab a cab when you cross, tell him the name of the hotel and in 3 minutes you are there. Try to pay in cash, avoid leaving a credit card number if possible. If you bring a girl back you'll have to register her. Don't worry. they get a lot of that there.
Have a good trip.

MM
I would be cautious walking around San Ysidro/Tijuana with your laptop, most likely you will not have any problems, but I'd put it in a backpack rather than a laptop case.
If you have the option to drive into Mex (I'm not sure if rentals allow it) Pueblo Amigo is literally 90 seconds from the border (a little longer coming back). You can pull right into the secure parking and avoid walking around downtown San Ysidro with your valuables. Just make sure you get Mexican Insurance, even if you are only driving 1/4 mile into Mexico, it keeps you out of jail in case of an accident. It should cost about $15 for the day. The line can be kind of a ***** on Sunday, so plan to leave early.

If the zona is the only area you are going, no need worrying about a car in a parking lot.

Stay in San Diego and take the trolley down to the border. Keep valuables in a safe at the hotel. Make use of taxis after crossing the border. Do research on this site before going.

Yes. If you drive in a rented vehicle MAKE CERTAIN YOUR CONTRACT ALLOWS FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TAKEN INTO MEXICO. Not all rental agencies permit this. Ask first. The cops love stopping rental cars to check this.
Also, allow at least 3 hours for crossing back into the USA at San Ysidro (the same place you came in). If you depart in the morning, leave as early as possible (4am is a good time) during the week as a lot of commuters head state-side to go to work, and it's a LONG wait.
You should really take a taxi there from the border and a taxi back to the pedestrian line when you return. Pick up your rental and head out.

I concur that Pueblo Amigo is a good spot. here is the website:

Price is good, too.

Another choice would be the Leyva. New rooms #6-15 or something like that. You will be in the Zona. A lot of regular gringos are there and easily share information on the scene. If you like a change of pace, you can bring a street girl back. No problem with as many girls as you want even threesomes are cool. The security is great. Take a taxi.

Although it has been a while, I have had good luck at the Hotel Lurcerna. It is about a $5.00 taxi ride to the Zona but it is safe and secure. They also have a great Sunday buffet. Also, it's very close to the Caliente Sports Book if that's your sort of thing.

"Examine" for laptops includes having you boot up your computer, surrender any passwords needed to access it, removing the computer from your possession for "examination" (they will copy the hard drives off site), and then return it to you within a "reasonable period of time" (up to 6 wks later has been reported). Astute (security minded) businesses are now issuing "throw away" phones and "sanititzed" laptops to those traveling on business.
This policy also applies to cell phones, cameras, etc. While you may not have them taken this time doesn't mean that they can't.
I would not take mine across if I anticipated needing it for anything in the next few weeks or if there were information that I might not want to share.

Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks to everyone for the advice.
I think for safety, I will get a hotel near the airport and take the rental to the parking lot behind the jack in the box.
Cross the border and taxi to the zona.
Thanks again

It's so obvious homie
Villariagosa, come on, that guy is like Vanilla Ice, a one hit wonder. Had he been doing a better job in LA he could have been catapulted into the national spot light. He does run LA like he's still in the third world though, with strict adherence to the patron system. I have always said that LA is the most third world place I've been to.
