Be careful - Avoid the white taxi´s.
hi!
this happened this wednesday after a visit on fase2.
we were 3 guys that had had a good night, and decided to call it a night. outside there was the normal taxi-que as usual.
i recognised a taxidriver that did drive me home the night before, and i wanted to go with him. but he said that i had to take another taxi that was before him in their quesystem, and this happened to be a white, unmarked taxi.(no identification numbers on the car)
the driver was a female, and i thought that because of that, it couldn't be that bad, even that the taxi wasn´t a regular "yellow one". once inside the car, i explained that she should drive me to el centro, where i am staying. there was nothing that could be missunderstood by that, and she started driving.
the first problem came shortly into the journey where she was suposed to make a right turn, but instead did a left turn. i told her that this was the wrong way, and she excused herself with that "she was not allowed to drive right, but had to make a left-left turn". i dont know the local traffic rules in that area, but no other taxidriver has ever driven me that way. so she did a left-left-turn and came out on the right way.
we where smalltalking during the ride and once we came somewhere closeby the colon area (alpujarra metrostation) at the carerra 46 she stopped at a redlight. i sat in the frontseat and was facing her as we had our conversation.
- suddenly in the corner of my eye, i see a motorcycle with two riders stopping maybe 5-8 meters behind us.
nothing strange by that, but when the passanger on the motobike was jumping of the motobike and pulled out a gun i got the icechills and shouted at her "sicario, sicario! - vamos, vamos, vamos!!" (hitmen/robbers!!, drive, drive, drive!!)
first she froze up, for what feelt like a looong second, but finally her mind made the right connections to her feets, and she started to take of from the redlight.
the motoguy with the gun in his hand was now running just behind the car, trying to catch us before the car got into to much speed. thankfully, the car won the race, and he started to fall behind the car.
- that did not stop these guys, as the driver quickly picked up the gunman, and they started chasing us on their motorcyckle.
i shouted at her "mas rapido, mas rapido!!" (go faster, go faster!!) and at that point i was out of ideas other that trying to outrun the motorbike in speed. the girl was smarter than me, as she started to repeatedly honk the carhorn to draw attention to the motochase.
when she started doing this, the gun/motoguys hit the brakes, and speeded up along a road to the right.
we speeded for another 500 meters before she hit the brakes at a crossing where there was some yellow taxis parked. once the car stopped she littely throw herself out of the car screaming "ajuda me, ajuda me!! (help me, help me!!)
on shaking legs i got out of the car too, and she was now hiding behind a phonebooth. i shouted at the taxiguys "marca a policia!" (call the police!) but no one of the drivers seemed to care, like it was not their business.
-i had no idea if the motoguys was about to come back, and the support from these guys seemed close to zero. i finally managed to get another driver to help me by driving me to my hotel.
back at the hotel all kind of conspiracy theories went thru my head. - who was in on it? - was it someone at the club, or the taxi driver from yesterday, or the girl, or was it all just bad luck?? - i had no answears but alot of questions.
at this point i didn't trust no-one, (not even ruling out the last driver beeing linked in someway) and was thinking that the motoguys might be comming looking for me, so i changed from my hotel and went to sleep in the house of a good friend instead.
today i am feeling better, but i can see at least one major wrong that i did:
getting into a white taxi is not a good idea, because if it is a setup, you are easy to track and follow along the nighttraffic of all the yellow taxicabs.
also, if i had called for a taxi, that trip would have been recordend at the taxi central, and the driver would not be able to be apart of some kind of robberyplot. (if that was the case)
looking back, if the female taxidriver would have hesitated just 1.5-2 seconds more, the guy would have gotten us, and in the best case we would "thankfully just have got robbed". and for the worst case, it could have gone much, much worse.
so be carefull out there, and avoid the white taxis if possible.
take care,
ken apples.
