May 25th - May 31st
I'll be traveling to Rio with a fellow mongerer during the aforementioned dates. We are newbies to Rio although we have been doing our due diligence. Are there any experienced Rio mongerers looking for wingmen? How about other newbies?
Hi Doc,
I'll be busy with non hobbying friends until the 22nd. Then I'll only have one night of fun for myself. I'll be in the Copcabana area the time I'm there. Maybe we can meet up that Monday!
Sounds cool. I should have gotten a feel for things by then. I'm still ironing out my exact accomodations but I should end up in the Copa near MP and Help if possible.

Rio Hotel
I'm looking for Rio hotel suggestions. Will be staying with the gf in Rio next month. Would like a hotel in Copa, Ipanema or Leblon, that is nice and clean, within walking distance of the praia and not expensive. I've stayed at Marina Palace and Sol Ipanema. Both were nice but a tad pricey.
We will be spending one day at the US consulate up on Avenida President Wilson, but I am assuming that we do not want to stay near Flamengo/Gloria area.
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Air Fares
I just checked out Air fares to Rio up to Feb 2007 and Continental Airlines has fares $550 plus tax from Newark. this is very good as the prices recently have been in the $1000 as most of you know and I wouldn't expect these prices to last either, I just bought mine for the next trip.

June 1 - Rio
Coming into town, looking for folks to hang out. I'm in my 30s, decent looking, athletic and got fair game. I know this town pretty well -- It'll be my fifth time visiting, but I'm kind of an on-and-off monger.
I'll probably live out my porn star dreams the first day, do it three, four, five times.
But I know how I am, and I'll get bored by the second or third day and look for something more edifying. Maybe head down the shore to Buzios.
Be either not-quite-so single-minded, or terribly single-minded. I think I get bored because I'm still on a bit of a mental leash. Itd be good to let my devil out some more.

princess copacabana
Talk to lancer, but this seems to be OK for people, close to help, close to praia, etc.

Varig Bankrupt?
What is the deal with Varig? I was about to book my flight online via their website, however, during the process a question came to mind. Put everything on hold, and quickly called them. A recording answered and stated that all flights in/out of LAX were cancelled until further notice. WTF?

Bad News - LAX Varig
Just got off the phone with Varig's regular 800 reservation. All Varig flights have been cancelled out of LAX.

Where have you been man?

Varig has been having big problems for at least a year or more and in recent weeks it is in trouble of going out of business. The employees are trying to buy it as well as others, seems to be complicated securing financing and accepting current debt. Find another carrier, forget about Varig for now. Read this board as Varigs story has been posted here by many posters.
Varig Suspends International Flights to 10 Cities (Update3)
June 21 (Bloomberg) -- Varig, the Brazilian airline that has operated in bankruptcy for a year, suspended flights to 10 international destinations including New York, Los Angeles and Madrid, after U.S. courts forced it to ground planes.
Porto Alegre, Brazil-based Varig, the country's biggest international carrier, said in a statement it will continue service to some cities abroad such as Miami, Frankfurt, London, Buenos Aires, Lima, Santiago and Caracas.
Cancellations
The carrier, which is trying to reorganize its more than 7 billion reais ($3 billion) of debt in bankruptcy, has canceled 162 of its 180 flights daily between midnight and 10:30 a.m. New York time, Brazil's airport authority said. The carrier called off 118 flights yesterday, the airport authority said.
Domestic carriers such as TAM and Gol Linhas Aereas SA are taking Varig passengers with no charge, following a contingency plan by the country's civil aviation regulator, a spokeswoman for the regulator in Brasilia said.
Travel agents are concerned cancellations will increase as of next week when Brazil's travel season begins with the school winter holidays.
``Our customers are scared,'' said Valdenice Aparecida, a travel agent at Agencia Jorge de Turismo e Passagens Ltda. in Sao Paulo. ``We have a lot of customers who bought Varig tickets asking for their money back. But it will be impossible to for them to get any reimbursement.''

Been Working
Yeah, I knew they were having some problems, however, it was a big shock to me (yesterday) when the agent stated that all flights were cancelled indefinately. I hope Varig gets it together. What flights I have taken with them were always comfortable, and on time.
I ended up booking a flight with AA for a little over a $1k (including tax). Again, it is a RT from LAX. This was the best rate available at the time.
Today, I visited the consulate in LA to apply for my visa. Man, what a-holes. As soon as I turned in the paperwork at the counter, the lady looked it over, and then marked "90-days." WTF? I asked if I could get the 5-years, and she stated, "You have no right to ask that. It is our choice what to give you." Man, what a FKN ****.
What is the deal with the visas these days? Back when, a 5-years were a given. I've heard reports of fellow mongers receiving the 90-days in the past year.
