Antifreeze,
Thanks for your information and always great posts. I have been in Cali about 8 times now and getting ready to take the plunge and move there. Can you tell me how you found your apartment and in what area do you live? I usually stay in an aparta hotel but it is not practical for long term. Per day it is very nice but about 32 dollars a day. I am looking to stay in the North area around Grenada or Santa Monica.These are more expensive areas but a bit quieter. I enjoy the nightlife in Cali but prefer the Blues Brothers Bar or the London Bar for music & drinking. These are easily the most popular bars for expats and visitors from the USA and Europe.As for the women, many Cali girls know the reputation of the cliental of these bars and go there with the express purpose of meeting a new friend.
Anyway, thank you again for your posts they are very honest and helpful.

Antifreeze:
Thanks for those tips, $225/month apartment with security guards sounds a great deal, but on your old posts you said that foreigners couldn’t rent without "propredad raise" or any income. What’s the deal?
Surfer:
I wouldn’t worry about FARC. State’s department gives us bullshit all the time. What I consider is street crimes, such as robbery, scam, and pocketpicker, etc… I don't want end in a ditch after getting in a cab. BTW, which one has more blondes. Meddllin or Cali?

Hi guys,
I am sorry about the time it took to answer. I was stuck in New-York and Canada for 2 weeks enjoying the lack of a sex life with the prelude of winter.
Yes, rent is cheap... But the type of paperwork that is involved is a pain in the butt. I was able to get around those requirements by paying 3 months in advance. You may be able to do the same with a reasonable landloard that would understand your situation. This is somewhat risky also though. Your landloard may as well kick you out the day after you've paid. So keep the right paperwork so you have something to hold to if worst comes to worst.
I am sorry not to be able to be more specific about where to find rent. I would suggest starting with El Pais (http://www.elpais-cali.com).
Good luck

I realize many of the people on this board are in the know about Cali and do not need anyone to help them find their way when they visit.However, for the guys who are looking for a guide to the nightlife, someone who has full knowledge of the "Casas" , and more importantly how and where to meet ladies that party, then Andres Morales is your man. He is a fun resourceful young guy who is fully fluent in English after having lived in the states many years.His rates are very reasonable as well as negotiable. Andres can also arrange airport pick up and cheap hotels by request. In Cali, he is a very good friend to have.
His contact : calidude_co@yahoo.com

If I needed a guide for Cali, which I don't, I would choose Andres too. He is young & hip, and is a really nice guy who would be a great partner for chasing nonpros in discos and the like.
Supertomcat: While I agree that the State Department cries wolf way too much, and I do NOT give much credence to its warnings, I wouldn't so cavalierly discount the risk of kidnapping by FARC if you venture into the countryside. Not saying it cannot be done, but to deny the VERY REAL risk is courting trouble IMHO. Colombia is a country where trouble can find you in a hurry, even if you are NOT seeking it out. And the CONSEQUENCES of being unlucky are drastic (word has it they relish in torturing/killing Americans whose families refuse to pay the ransom demands).

surfer is right. while chances are nothing will happen, dont ever kid yourself and think that it cant. it can be a very dangerous place to be and life means
i will tell you something that i worry more about then being kidnapped and that is being put in jail down there. i know a guy that went down there five months ago and had a local guy hook him up with a girl for some action. well come to find out the girl was ****, even though she said she was legal. the police had been watching this local guy as i guess someone had reprted him. well they threw him and the guy i know in jail and he is still in jail going on 5 months.
even if your not with **** girls, as a visitor your pretty much guilty until proven innocent there so keep your nose extra clean.

Slick, Antifreeze, Aussie and others, thanks for the good reports about this undervisited sex paradise ;
I am a regular of Brasil (Sampa and others inland cities) and all that have been said here in this Colombia thread gave me a strong desire to visit soon Cali and Medellin : many bars, discos, pick-up places have been reported, thanks for it, but the only things i couldn't find in the discussions are hotels ;
someone reported Inter as a pain in the arse for bringing girls, so what could be the others alternatives for some good AND guest friendly hotels (with in-room safe, and pool if possible) ;
Thanks in advance for any answer (any hotels infos about Mendellin and Baranquilla are welcome too) ;
Cheers

in barranquilla, hotel prado is the upscale option (more than us$50). if it is beyond your budget, still stay in el prado rather than centro. i stayed at this moorish themed place recommended by lonely planet (about $25) but i forgot the name. could find it if you want.
in cali, the budget minded monger's hotel of choice is hotel don jaime on avenida sexta right in the heart of the action. cost about $20. bellhop gustavo speaks great english and is a very connected kind of guy if you get my drift.
the story about the guy being set up by the police with the **** girl is frigtening. if you have any more info on the incident, i would be very interested as i have some friends living in cali and also know some of the sexta street girls. my email is xtnsurfer@hotmail.com. thanks.

Opps, forgot to give info on Medellin. In Medellin you MUST stay in the Poblado section. Hotel Plaza Rosa gets rave reviews for good value but was full when I was there during the Flower Festival in August. I stayed at Hotel Mercure near the Oveido shopping center which is HIGHLY recommended! InterC is old, isolated up on the hill, but is close to many good entertainment options.
I also do know a place with pool and inroom safe in Cali that is WAY more upscale than Don Jaime but prefer to share it by email.

Surfer, thanks for your answers, it's this kind of mongers fraternity which make WSG the best of all !...
About Cali, as (in my eyes) being in the heart of red light district (heart of action ?) should not be a good choice for the 'image' given to the non-pros (as staying in Copacabana in Rio target you immediatly as a sex tourist), i'm more interested with your upscale choice (if it's guest friendly :) !)
Prado in Barranquilla and Mercure in Mendellin seems to be very good choices ;
BTW, what are your options to take a girl a few days in a beach resort or any cool place ?
Cheers

If you really like a chica, San Andreas Island is a great place to take her. Make arrangements in a Colombian agencia de Viajes (travel agency) ... much cheaper.
Plenty of flights from all the major cities in Colombia ... included with your package from the travel agency.
Also Santa Marta is a cool place to take a chica ... northern Colombia.
By the way ... Ave Sexta is not a red light district in Cali ... chicas will not think your a sex fiend if you stay in a hotel there. You'll have a better time ... closer to discos / cafes if you're there too.
In Medellin ... Hotel Plaza Rosa if it's available is your best bet. Definitely not in a red light district.

Ricker thanks the infos ;
Av Sexta in Cali sounds good as to stay in a lively area with regulars bars and cafes is a real ++ for me ; Surfer reported the Don Jaime, any other alternative in a more upscale guestfriendly place ?
Thanks

Pro,
I liked Rigo's place, Hostal San Fernando, as a bargain yet quite sufficiently nice place (very clean!). www.hotelcali.com. Great neighborhood, safe, and short cab to everywhere.
There is no redlight district in Cali (or none as obvious). Yet, I discovered that Av. Sexta area was quite worthless for about anything (other than nasty - yet an occasional find - streetwalkers). The restaurants there are not good compared to other spots... the bars are not populated with hottie non-pros... and it's not necessarily the area of casas (pro action), although it's nearby.
I have more detail in my extensive trip report which was in Jul-03.

Hi guys:
I read reports on electronic translators on one of these posts. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one, and I didn't copy the brand names down! If anyone has suggestions, I'd appreciate a post at This1greatman@yahoo.com. This would be of benefit to all us mongers.

Leo, thanks for the advice about San Fernando Hotel and the atmosphere on Sexta avenue : when you say that the bars there are not populated with some hotties non-pros, where are they to be found :) ?
Thanks in advance
