I'm 35 yrs. What is the normal dress attire if I wanted to check out a night club like Climax or Insomnia in Bangkok to pick up a FL? Are jeans pants and a collared polo with covered casual shoes normal or shorts and collared shirt okay?
JR
Climax beeing more or less an all in FL place you could do the Victoria Bitter singlet and adidas shorts and flip flops routine but as the girls there choose freely your apperiance can help the outcome as in get you the present top lookers or not. Same goes for Bangkok Beat. If we move up a notch to Insanity (no more Insomnia in Bangkok, it is in Pattis), Shock, Levels, Mixx decent dressed will do. Clubs in Thong Lor you can also find newest trends from the fashion industry so without beeing nazi about it I try to atleast have one eye open what is cooking in this department. But classic clothing as Paul Smith, Diesel Denims, Ralph Lauren, Gant, Jim Thompson (local hero) etc will do you fine in almost all cases. I dress pretty much as you describe for the nightlife ex the shorts. Daytime activity I wear mostly denim shorts, t-shirts and some decent footwear. I put away expensive watches and other accesories if stralling pointless around during daytime ex for the Silom area and high end mall visits. I put it back on for the nightlife activity. Never experienced any safety issues in BKK no matter what but ofcourse that could be just pure luck, I don't know.
As some comments i get the feel the regular BKK crowd becomes more and more occupied with fashions. Probably due to they have more money to spend. I see through my regular non prostitute girls they do some high quality shopping more often now and same goes for their male friends as well.
I noticed a temporary booth at Terminal 21 taking orders for custom denim jeans. They weren't truly bespoke. You started by selecting the waist and inseam measurements, the cut and then had scores of custom options to choose from. There was a young man taking orders and helping customers with the multitude of options. Had I run across it at the beginning of my trip I would have ordered a pair. I really like jeans. I live in Southeast Florida and do find them hot in the summer. I wear mostly linen and summer weight twill, which I find more comfortable. Perhaps my jeans, which are fine in our mild winters, are made from too heavy a weight denim. I will take your advice and shop for a pair of bespoke or custom made jeans on my next trip this spring. Where do you recommend I look?
Yep, I know who you are talking about. I have been to their shop. Ok, but I would probable go with a different shop. A Canadian guy, Ben Viapiana, does really good work. Also Nama Denim in T21 on the men's floor makes some great jeans. I have jeans from both and am very happy. Ben takes about 2 weeks. Once you get a great pair made of Japanese selvedge you will be a convert. I would suggest about a 15 oz fabric to start with. PM me next time you are in town and I can direct you to Ben's.
I don't wear denim jeans in Bangkok - too hot. I have several pair of summer twill jeans in various colors for casual wear. I see a lot of cargo pants worn in Bangkok. I've read pick pockets love guys who wear cargo pants. I think Bangkok is a pretty safe city. Still, I wouldn't wear a $2K watch walking the sidewalks at night. I wear a Citizen watch I paid a couple hundred for when I travel.
Cargo pants can be risky unless you wear the right kind of cargo pants. I find Tilley has very comfortable and secure cargo pants / shorts: http://www.tilley.com/uk_en/men/pants-shorts/shorts/multi-tech-cargo-shorts.html and http://www.tilley.com/uk_en/men/pants-shorts/outdoor-active/classic-zip-off-pants.html. Wash in the hotel sink and hang to dry: ready to wear again the next morning. Pockets are zippered and / or velcro-ed, with some extra "hidden" pockets inside.
Add some of their tropical fabric "safari" style shirts and you are ready to face the urban jungle of Bangkok by day or night!
I wear sandals a lot for fresh air and lack of stinkiness (no socks). However not to club obviously, where proper shoes are called for, even if Thais are telling you to go more casual (they can be wrong). I don't really think sneakers are a good idea if you are dressing up a bit, however maybe I can be wrong on this.
In most situations its too hot to wear sneakers really.
I actually bought a few pairs of crocs-loafers in Thailand and Singapore. I find them very comfortable, lightweight and stylish.
My apologies in advance for a non-mongering post.
On several occasions in the past I've read recommendations for high quality, dependable tailors (for custom made suits) in the Sukhumvit area. Now I cannot seem to find them.
Current recommendations from first-hand experience would be greatly appreciated.
SW4.
"Tailor on Ten" (http://www.tailoronten.com/), definitely. But don't expect your suit to be ready in 24 hours as a good suit will need at least 2 fittings. Think about 5 days. You will pay the price of a good (non-bespoke) suit in Europe, but of course this one will be fully made-to-measure.
They also have the best shirts I've ever seen: solid quality and fully customizable down to the last detail.

I agree with your assessment of their shirts.

Raja
I had good luck with competitive prices and service at Raja's but that was some years ago. They are still located at the same convenient location just below the Sky Train Nana Station.

I agree that there is nothing like a custom made pair of bespoke jeans. Match them with a loose fitting Thai silk or linen shirt from Jim Thompson (avoid the elephant patterns) and a pair of Brooks Cascadia Trail Running Shoes and you are ready to hit the best clubs and discos in town.
Happy New Year everybody. I think 2015 is going to be a good year.

Shorts are a US phenomena. I've been to 60 plus countries and grown men don't normally wear shorts. If someone is fashion challenged all you have to do is get online and look what the high end stores are selling. If you can swing it shop at Nordstrums, you can't go wrong. If that's not your budget then hit some of the smaller brands that sell to teenagers. H&M comes to mind. Just keep your purchase to the conservative looking garb.
I have a knock off of the Panerai 268 that I bought in Thailand years ago for $125. I leave the 11 K one at home. My philosophy if I get robbed is to hand over everything in my possessions and ask the guy if he wants a cup of coffee to go. Always have back up cash and debit cards in the hotel safe.
8 Days! Man I have a lot to do before I leave.

Just can't comprehend how the top girls do it. Do they use a tube full of lube every session?

Happy New Year guys!
Yep, that is the one. Ben, the first guy in the article is a great dude. Can't say enough good things about him. Have a pair of 14.5oz from him. Just had their first wash after a year and around 45 or so wears.
The Nama guys (third in the article) are fantastic as well. Have one of their earlier pairs. They just had their first wash after a year and about 100 wears.
Both are coming along. My one mass market pair is an Unbranded 18 oz that was made for last year's Pronto Denim Fair here in Bangkok. They too just had their first wash and the fades are coming in nicely.
For me it is jeans, a good Jersey T-Shirt in black or white, and either my Red Wing Beckmans, 8130's, or Converse. Have a couple pair of PF Flyers waiting in the US. Can't wait to get 'them over here.
