Nille
Yes, I know it very well as far as once I did not come when she was still working in VV and she really got mad. But I must say that she really tried her best to make me come and I enjoyed her services at their best this way!

About the winter tyres
A friend and I are planning to make a trip to Germany in March. Are winter tires required then? I'm not concerned about driving in snow as I'm a "veteran" of winter driving in Michigan and the mountains of NE Pennsylvania. I just don't want to spend money uselessly.
I was in Frankfurt renting a car at the airport in March 2009 and had ordered winter tyres. But just before I was going to pick up the vehicle I happened to pass by the Tourist desk and asked him if they were required. He informed me that since the weather was no longer freezing cold I would be wasting my money in ordering the tyres. I subsequently took his advice and changed the order to summer tyres and went on to do about 800km without any issues. As the weather is the variable, you may want pass it by the tourist desk and get his input. The tourist desk is in the same wing as the car rental area in the airport. Hope this helps.

Early
Can anyone say anything about the line-up early in the day at this club? Thanks.
Can anyone say anything about the line-up early in the day at this club? Thanks.
Hit or miss during the week. Some times you can step into a goldmine. But most mid-week lunch line ups that I've seen there have been thin. Great club, but quirky. Sometimes it is the best line up in the NRW and sometimes it is just plain rough.
Cheers,

At a minimum, your insurance would be invalidated and you would be responsible for the accident damage to both cars whether or not the crash was your fault. I do not know exactly which date is the change-over date for summer tyres, but it is a fixed date regardless of the weather.
This is NOT a good area in which to skimp.

Charlie
No that is not true. Winter tyres are required when you drive in "Winter weather conditions". Most Germans use them typical from November untill March. There is no fixed period defined by Law when you must drive winter tyres.
@Toscana: I would not recommend LR if you stay there only During day time. But you can certainly have a good time during day-time in LR, it is just that LR is more a club where more is hapening in the evening and night.

Some comments
As the weather is the variable, you may want pass it by the tourist desk and get his input. The tourist desk is in the same wing as the car rental area in the airport. Hope this helps.
Why would you even think of stopping by the tourist desk to get a weather forecast? I land in Germany, I'm hurtling past all the slow travelors so that I can squeeze in one more fuck. Its also possible that his bunion wasn't hurting anymore, so you might actually be correct in stopping by his booth.

Or maybe they have very fast mechanics hidden somewhere who changed your tires before you made it to the parking garage. Or maybe there was some idiot arriving a half hour after you who insisted on having a car with summer tires. And they forced him to take your car with winter tires. I figure they change over the tires on all their cars before winter hits to conform with the law. And that 'adding winter tires' to your rental is just an expense you didn't need to click. But I'm not sure, next time I'm in Frankfurt I'll ask the tourist desk if this is true.

HB
I know HB, but that is an informal Rule and in NRW it is different when compared with Hessen or Bayern. Easter 2011 is very late, almost Summer by then, LOL!

For all my December 2010 trips, Avis and Hertz just added snow tyres to my car hire with no demur. I had no problem for the snow tyres additions since I was actually wanting them anyway. For my January 2011 trips so far I have not had to take snow tyres per Hertz since the snowy conditions were melted away. During last week the weather was almost balmy with sunshine in pockets where I did walk in the forest for a bit since it was so warm. My car thermometer read 14 degrees celsius at times.
I am hoping that Hertz is following the law here in regard to snow tyres?

But do not forget you as a car driver are responsible. In Hessen if I were to rent a car I would always ask for a car with winter tyres. In NRW it is less critical, reaching LR, GT, VV no problem. ACA and PSR I speak from experience in Winter time on Summer tyres is not recommended.
I am hoping that Hertz is following the law here in regard to snow tyres?
You are the driver, you are responsible. So you have to pay the extra fee for the winter tires.
