Mrniceguys getting to Goldentime from DUS
Hello all,
This is my first post here but have been viewing the board since August. I will be going to GT soon and was wondering if anybody has any thoughts about getting there? I'm thinking about taking a fight to Dusseldorf, then taking a cab. Does anyone know a cheap way of getting to GT without renting a car? Is Dusseldorf the closets airport to GT? I will be taking American airlines as a carrier.
Mrniceguys,
According to my version of Google Earth the airport options to Goldentime by motor vehicle for me are:
1. NRN ===> Goldentime is 48.8 km taking 52 minutes (I have done it in 45 minutes by hire car because you are driving at 50-70 km the whole way)
2. DUS ===> Goldentime is 53.4 km taking 37 minutes (I have done it in 35 minutes by hire car)
3. EIN ===> Goldentime is 84.5 km taking 58 minutes (I have always done this in 60 minutes due to the traffic on the motor way by hire car through NL).
I usually pick NRN, then EIN before DUS as my entry port.
Jackyo is correct that DUS is the closest MAJOR airport to GT.
I would also recommend taking the plunge and hiring a motor vehicle but if you must come from DUS and use public transport then this is what I do from my maiden voyage to Goldentime notes which I have not published yet as I am still finding time to finish writing them up.
Option 1: Train and Taxi from Dusseldorf
Getting to GT from Dusseldorf involves staying in a hotel near the DUS hauptbanhoff. Take a train from Dusseldorf Hbf to Kaldenkirchen, (consider using a German Rail pass as it is priced right and you have the convenience of choosing when you want to go. It is a one hour train ride. Then it is a 14 euro taxi ride to GT from Kaldenkirchen. If there are no taxis waiting at Kaldenkirchen then call one of these taxi companies:
**Hφpfner +49 (0) 2153-72600
**Kurdi +49 (0)2153-1818
**Cremer Bruggen +49 (0)2163-7777
The last train back to Dusseldorf from Kaldenkirchen is 10:10pm. The problem with doing the train/taxi combo is that you are at the mercy of the train timetable. Using trains and not staying overnight means that you will not be able to close the club at 01:00.
If you do stay overnight then stay at Hotel Camp Heide for 26 for the night which is 1 km walk away from GT.
Option 2: Train to Kaldenkirchen then Bus to GT
Do as per option 1 but when at Kaldenkirchen instead of taking a taxi you check this map and take the bus to Bruggen:

Golden Time is in front of the bus stop Tierpark, case B2.
From Monday to Friday, the bus #072 comes from Kaldenkirchen to Bruggen every hour.

NRW Car hire works out close to train and taxi combos
Hi Dedalus
If you research it and play your cards right, you can get a weekend rental for less than 100 EUR. Often much less. Also driving in D'land is a snap. No worries there.
I have hired cars out of EIN and NRN with Sixti.
For 3 day weekend out of EIN I paid 56.12 for car hire plus 23.75 petrol limited to 300km of driving. As my travel schedule had me coming from EIN to GT and then a drive around from Bruggen to VV or PHG and back I never broke 100km a day.
For a 2 day hire from NRN I paid 23.75 and 21 in petrol for the drive from NRN to GT and a bit of cruising around Bruggen to hotel for the overnight stay then back to GT and then back to NRN to fly home. Once again limit of 100 km per day unless you want to pay 0.15 for each kilometer over the 100km allowed. As I was going only 50km odd from NRN to GT and some Bruggen town driving I was never going to break the 100km limit.
I thought for 44.75 total for 2 day's car hire and petrol was okay value versus taking a bus from NRN to Dusseldorf Hbf then taking a train from Dusseldorf Hbf to Kaldenkirchen bahnof and then a taxi to GT for one way travel.
This just my experience and it is annoying having to pay extortionate airport service charges of 17-19% as the car hire would have been a lot cheaper than what I ended up paying.

Hanging with the NRW Ice Bears
I was at Goldentime in May hanging out with a couple of local NRW Ice Bears.
We were discussing the different scenes in Britain, Switzerland, NRW and the Netherlands. They also taught me the word muschi for pussy to add to my Deutsch vocabulory as we were observing the Goldentime mother cat (muschi?) and its kittens which spend a lot of time in the garden by the couches on the platform.
What made this scene hilarious and memorable for me was we sent one of the Ice Bears off to get some beers from the beer fridge just a little up from where were sitting just below the couch raised wooden platform.
We waited and waited for over half a hour for our companion to return with beers so in the end we sent a search party to go find the guy.
To our amazement the guy was standing by the beer fridge with his arms fullof beers that were getting warm. He was not more than 10 metres away from where we were sitting looking rather dazed.
We quizzed the guy as to what had happened to him. The Ice Bear thought long and hard and said that a topless girl had come by him as he was getting the beers and had put her hand under his robe and tickled his balls.
Somehow that tickling the balls act made him lose his memory and he could not remember what the beer was for and where he was meant to take it so just stood in place hoping that something would jog his memory.
I suppose Goldentime has that effect on people.
This is an excerpt from my as yet unreported May NRW trip reports.
