Photocopies of passports and ID
Viagrant, pls keep in mind that your driver license, in EU, IT IS NOT a valid ID document.
It is ONLY a driver license like anyone else.
May I suggest to carry with you always a photocopy of your passport? Also, if you have the paper that the Hotel SHOULD give you when you give them yr ID document, it shold be the best.
:)
Ciao
I seriously doubt that German police would rather see a photocopy of a passport instead of a valid US driver's license, which is the legal form of ID in the USA. I am going to check into this issue further.
What document that the hotel "SHOULD give" me? I have been to Germany 6 times in the last few years, in several hotels, and I am not sure what you are referring to.

ID requirements in Germany
I found this so far.

Scroll down to the reply by "BadDoggie" from Nov 24 2004, 5:56 pm. He actually quotes some passages from German law to back up his claims. See this passage:
You have to do quite a biit of searching to find the law affecting foreigners:
Ausländer sind darüber hinaus verpflichtet, ihren Pass oder Ausweis (-ersatz), ihre Aufenthaltserlaubnis oder Duldung vorzulegen und bei Verdacht eines Verstoûes zu überlassen (§ 5 Abs. 1 Satz 4 SchwarzArbG).
The Schwarzarbeit laws are where you find this. YOU MUST HAVE AN ACCEPTABLE ID ON YOU AT ALL TIMES AND SHOW IT TO ANY COP WHO ASKS FOR IT. Acceptable to Germans is "Ausweis" or "Passport". Read the laws and see for yourself.
The fines appear to start at €30 but can go up into the thousands if you act like a dick about it. You can also be jailed (but German cops are really pretty friendly compared to US cops, even when they arrest you). You can be deported, and if you're not an EU national, it could slam the door to all EU countries in your face.
But someone else replies:
BadDoggie, the passages of law that you quote do not state that you must carry your ID on you at all times. Neither Germans nor foreigners.
As grtho pointed out, those passages state that you must be in posession of valid ID (i.e. whether you posess it on your person at all times or keep it at home, it doesn't matter). They also state that you should be able to present that ID if required. I.e. if you don't have it on your person you should be able to go home and fetch it.
As I said, these days the police are able to radio through to the residents database and if your stated name and address match those that they have in their records, then you're sorted.
I've been controlled randomly at an U-Bahn station and I had not a single piece of ID on me. Not even a bank card or mobile phone. Just a bit of loose change in my pocket. I gave my name and address and all was in order.
The German laws are not quite as draconian as I suspect you'd like to believe.
I still feel nervous about carrying my passport around. As someone else in that thread said, it is probably cheaper and safer to pay the €30 fine than to run the risk of losing your passport (which would cost $80-$100 to replace, and be a major hassle).

Quick Palace Update: Fri 09 Dec
Just a quick note to say: Last night, Fri 09 Dec, Palace was indeed rocking! Some good girls were absent (e.g. little Czech Vicky), some bad girls were absent too (e.g. Sascha Ukraine), but there was lots of new talent. Some really stunning very young girls were there, ones I had never seen before...my last visit was about a month ago. But there were some well known stars present too: Danielle of Romania was there. There was the usual back-log for rooms, but if you choose the right girl, the wait on the couch is quite pleasurable and entertaining... As I say there was lots and lots of talent available, not much sign of any depression due to the Polizei visit last Weds night.
The way to play Palace on nights like this is to pick a girl you click with very well, either one you have an established relationship with or a new one with whom you share superb chemistry. I was lucky to click nicely with a slightly older (late 20s) lady from Khazakastan, who has lived in Germany for a while: Tanya, blonde, great breasts, very very skilled in the foreplay and bbbj dept as well as a master of many positions. I had observed her earlier in the evening with another guest and she gave off great vibes: I approached her later and we hit it off superbly...so I was the recipient of a long foreplay session on the couch waiting for a room. At the end of a long 40 min session on the couch a room finally opened up and she skillfully kept me going for another whole hour in the room. So it was quite a long extended get-to-know you thing. I felt very good about this choice knowing with all the 9s walking around it is sometimes more gratifying to go with an 8, like Tanya, with a little more experience and a completely non-rushed GFE to PSE attitude. A real winner.
There's a big Party there tonight, so I think the conditions may be even worse than they were last (Fri) night. We'll see.
