Having lived and stuck out in Mexico, not only for being 6'6 but for wearing shorts almost everywhere, do men wear dress shorts there even considering it is on the coast? I don't care what others think, it's just that I always prefer to blend as much as I can. I know in alot of latin america countries it rarely happens. Thanks in advance.
Just returned from a 5 day trip to Lima:
Hotel:
LA Hacienda (Best Western) on Av Larco. Cost 80 soles per night and they charged 20 soles per guest. Nice place, but too expensive and will stay somewhere else next time. I found several other hotels nearby for about 65 soles per night and allow guests.
Food:
Various seafood restaurants in larcomar. My favorite was the fish sandwich at the corner bar. Nice sandwich and it comes w/ fries. Also watched the super bowl there and had a good time. Lots of places to choose from off Av Larco.
Bars:
I spent time at the bierhaus bar in both barranco and by pizza alley locations. Also the english pub near pizza alley and the old pub. Also pub cubano off of san martin. I drank both bottled and tap beer without any problems. The best time to hit barranco IMHO is Saturday night after midnight. I did visit tequila rocks, but did not like the quality.
Girls:
They are to be had, and I did meet up with a very hot woman who was hanging out with friends at the bierhaus in Barranco. She seemed to have a severe bi-polar personality. But I did enjoy her company at the bars, and most important back at the hotel. She never asked for money, although I did take her to several high end restaurants for dinner.
One interesting observation is the amount of hot women with boyfriends here. It seems that in Colombia, the percentage is much higher for available hot women that are single and just walking around. I'm guessing that it may have something to do with the economy in general. Again, just my observation from a short stay here centered mostly around Miraflores.

Dress shorts pretty much = gringo / european . There are very few locals especially in the city wearing shorts ,with more exceptions along the coast. Although right now there is a heat wave and I am not in town right now so I am sure there are more. Wear more muted colors to blend also.
In Miraflores it is not unusual to see a lot of people walking around in dress shorts, board shorts, flipflops, sandals, etc. There is an underlying surfer community vibe that is pretty mellow, and as long as you are actually wearing clothes I can't imagine anyone would be concerned.
It might matter what you are wearing if you are trying to pick up girls with discriminating taste, but I've had a fair bit of interest and I almost exclusively am wearing shorts, tshirts and flipflops in the Lima summer heat.
.....Apply this test: Is the poster a Disinterested Observer? Meaning: does he have anything to gain by mongers coming to Peru. One of the regular posters here rents out his apartment to mongers. To be fair, I dont know the guy, but obviously, the glass will always be half full to him. .....Don
Don:
You're very wise to have an abundance of caution in these matters. In this instance though - and I don't care if anyone thinks I'm kissing ass - the poster you are talking about is one of the most honest people I have ever met. I would trust him with anything, except a wet orifice, and then you see the monger horns come out in him!! As far as I am concerned he is always straight and not luring unsuspecting people to Lima. However, I do also agree with you. If pure P4P is what you want, nothing beats Asia. If the Lima hands (or dicks) think RyV is good - they should try the saunas in Macau!!

Comrades,
I need some advice? Im going to be looking for an apartment there soon, my price range will be $300-500 per month.
My question - Excluding miraflores, which Ive read is expensive and touristy, what are the best and safest districts to live in Lima. Miraflores is cool but I dont want to pay more than I have to, and seeing how cabs are readily available in Lima I can take one to pizza alley etc. anytime
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks
Vaughn

Guys: Need some advice
Other than Miraflores, Whats the best 3 or more distritos to rent an apartment in the price range of $300-$500. Miraflores is kinda touristy and I beleive that the rents are inflated so I would like some alternatives. Dont want to spend more than I have to, but at the same time I want to be safe. besides I can get a cab to Pizza Alley etc. Keeping in mind my age of 38 and I enjoy mucho quiet (trunquillo), what do you guys reccomend?
Thanks in advance
Vaughn

Vaughn
I would love to help you. But I don't know how much I feel like typing now.
The average price for a decent place is $30 US a day. That said, if you can speak spanish the newspaper has alot of places for rent. That go quick, El Comercio, ad section. But it will cost you alot to call them all from the crazy phone places and then chasing them down.
Wait. I will get you a number of a guy that will take care of you. Your lucky I saved it. This guy has alot of places. Ask him about the old lady in San Isadro (5-10 minute walk to pizza alley) with an apartment on top of her house. Near the Pizza Hut. It cost me $300.00 us for a month. Igor Patron Lama, cell.9285-9266. Or 460-7245
But don't tell Lima Busy. He thinks I'm a cheap prick.

Vaughn
Hey Vaughn,
You should check out San Borja, its a safe neighborhood, and much less than Miraflores, and a short taxi ride to Parque Kennedy area.
I opted to rent a few blocks from Parque Kennedy, just because i didnt mind paying the inflated prices.
Good luck!
tonight i went to the grocery to get supplies for my new apartment and then i was planning on hitting a club or two in miraflores to try my luck.
as i was coming out of the grocery i heard someone saying "hallo. hallo." then i felt someone touch my arm. it was a lady i had met a few weeks ago at the miss teen international presentation in parque kennedy. she recognized me and remembered all the details of our conversation, but i have met a bunch of girls and had even more pisco sours since we had met, so i could only remember the situation, but not the details.
we went to pizza alley and she nursed a pisco sour for a long time as we talked and helped each other with our spanish and english. i was taking it easy and not rushing, because she gave me the impression it was a sure thing.
we came back to my apartment, sat on the couch for a while, then moved to the bed. i tried to put the move on her by starting to give her a massage but she said she didn't have time. i said something like "just an hour" or something but she said she had to be home because it was late. she asked what i had expected tonight so i told her, you know, giving each other a massage, maybe without our clothes. her reply was "do you have a condom?" that was easy.
so she took off her clothes and i started to kiss her but she said we don't have time for that. five seconds later she was on her back with her knees up to her ears, motioning for me to put on the condom and get to it. okay.
after a lifetime of learning how to finesse midwestern american chicks and play the games they play i need to recalibrate my game for latin america. i have had two situations in the last 3 weeks where things fell apart without warning and i think it was because i didn't pull the trigger fast enough. i will try to move at rocket speed from now on and see how things work out.
I will be arriving in Lima today sunday around lunchtime. Do you have available accomodation for four, five nights ? If not, do you recommend anything upmarket, girl-friendly?
Being a Lima expert, would you be so kind to show me around the mongrring scene and introduce me to girls. I speak fluent spanish.
What about your contact?
Thanks
