Sorry Barri; i used 100 times the matatu at the road; in mtwapa and at the
bank near cheers; never ever something happened.
Thanks Steve, I've also used the matatus a lot and even walked along the road in early evening and "never ever something happened". Then it happened. I was lucky to escape without any cuts or losses. So now I figure there is only one way for me to eliminate the risk: Take a taxi at night.
There are thousands stories about robbery on the road. The thieves can easily escape into the bush, the police will never find them. "It never happens to me" does not mean "it never happens".
All the people I've met (Girls, Taxi Drivers, Hotel workers, Security etc...) told me, that I never ever should walk at night. I don't know, if it's dangerous or not. I haven't seen anything, nor did happen anything to me, but I'm pretty sure, that these things happen sometimes.
You decide if you want to believe these bad stories or not. But I know, that I won't risk my life just to save some small money. From Kahama/Fontana to a Disco or Pub nearby coast you just a few bucks (200 to 400 KES).
Up to you.
It has been said in this forum before that during the X-mas – New Year holidays the hotels hike their rates. The worst case I encountered was Sai Rocks Hotel: When I stayed there just before Easter last year I paid around 5,500. Now they wanted 19,600!!! Nearly the quadruple price!! I passed, of course, and tried a few others:
Bamburi Beach Resort. Left it after one night, couldn’t stand it. Peak price is 10,000 but value is less than 2,000.
Fontana Hotel. Stayed one week. Moved to Kahama when the post election troubles started to get better security.
Kahama Hotel. Stayed five nights. Night security was three guys behind double locked gate: one with baton, one with panga and one with bow and arrow. Felt safe :)
All these three were totally GF: No question of ID, neither at day time or at night time, and no extra money involved.
I obtained information for some other places too, and compiled the attached document, Bamburi beach hotels.doc. Hope someone has use of it.
Of the three hotel above I liked Kahama best (spacy room), but next time (and that won’t be X-mas!) I’d like to try Indiana or why not Big Tree. The Kibaki apartments might be good if you travel with a buddy.
Excellent work Barri, thank you also if actually it's not easy to plan an holiday in Kenia after the last big troubles and violence.
I've tweaked the PERAK map a bit and added [blue]GF hotels, ATMs[/blue] and other [blue]places of interest[/blue]. All of them have been mentioned before, except maybe Safari Inn. Sometimes (Wednesdays?) girls move early from Cheers to there in a hope to pick up muzungus with thicker wallets from Hotel Continental.
The map is not to scale: it only shows the relative locations of the places.
While one should always be concerned about one's personal safety, especially after nightfall walking on a road without street lights, one should be equally careful about believing all sorts of hearsay horror stories; the more people pass them on, the wilder they get.
That particular stretch of the Malindi Hwy seems to be always busy with pedestrians and people waiting for matatus, I. E. I doubt any half-smart street robber would choose such a busy location to ply his trade.
Sorry to disappoint you with "horror stories" but I have to confirm the danger. I was assaulted and robbed last month while going back to hotel (kahama, nearly next door to fontana) at night: it was late at night, as soon as I stepped off the matatu and crossed the road to go to the hotel, two guys came out from the jungle and approached me with machete, of course I gave them immediately all my money (luckily only 2000KSH, I never go out with much money in kenya.) and they run away.
There was no other people around and the hotel ascari were too far, they confirmed me it happened many times in the last months and advised always to take taxi in the night.
Inspired by The Lucky One’s excellent pictures I brought some toys (vibrators) on my recent trip, but I found out the hard way that they are illegal in Kenya. I had to bribe myself out of a threatening 15 years – lifetime imprisonment.
It all started at Cheers. First I waited for one girl to call me and confirm a date. When she didn’t call in time I waited for another girl (same who told the story about the mugging outside Kahama), and when she too took too long I moved and sat down next to a pretty girl who had been smiling at me all the evening, Faith is her name. She seemed a bit drowsy, and she talked in a backward twisted way that I could not fully understand, but she had a very pretty face and seemed to have a body matching my specs and she agreed to come with me to Kahama.
Before she undressed I took a picture of her face, but it didn’t come out too well. In the sack she proved she indeed had a very nice body and a sweet pussy, but she was the first star fish experience I have had in Africa. She showed however a little bit of interest in the toys, and she tried one clitoris vibrator, without seemingly enjoying it, and then she tried the G-spot vibrator, but she soon took it out saying somthing like ”Shaking inside”.
We slept and had another uninspiring round in the morning, and when she had dressed I asked if she hadn’t liked any of the toys. Then she grabbed the lilac G-spot vibrator. I said ”If you want this I want to take pictures of your pussy”. She undressed again and we had a short photo session.
In the evening the next day I met her at Cheers and she asked me ”Why you take this pictures?”, and I said I would look at them to remember her. She also said other things I did not understand. Her friend (the Kahama mugging story girl) said to me that she also had great difficulties in understanding what Faith was saying. Anyway; I moved on to Casablanca and gave the girls a lift there.
Next afternoon I again met Faith, this time at Big Tree, and again she asked about the pictures, and I still had problems understanding what she was saying. But as I left she suddenly said: ”I will give you trouble with the police, you understand?”. Like out of the blue!
Anyway, I went straight to the hotel, deleted all nude pictures from the camera and watched the post election riot news on TV.
There was a knock on the door and three policmen came in, one in uniform and two plain in clothes. We started with a friendly chat and then the uniformed (good cop) said that there had been a complaint and they needed to investigate it: A girl had complained that I had taken pornographic pictures of her while she was asleep and against her will. He asked to see my camera, which I gave him.
I explained to the police that in my opinion the girl indeed had given her consent since she had opted for the vibrator and undressed herself after she already had dressed in the morning. When I understood that she was unhappy with the pictures I had deleted them.
Then I made the mistake of showing the other vibrators.
They asked me to come with them to the Tourist Police station (opposite Cheers) and I had no choice.
In the captain’s office the plain clothes policeman (bad cop) took charge. He brought in the girl, whom I of course said I recognized. Again she said something I did not understand but the policeman translated ”Why you open her pussy and take picture”. And at this moment I understood what it was all about: I had taken one picture where I opened her pussy to get some pink, and it was obviously this that had upset the girl so much.
They kept asking about the deleted pictures, if I had more memory cards, if I had a laptop or a flash disk, which I of course hadn’t. I said that if I still had had the pictures I would have proved the girl was awake and co-operating.
Anyway, to cut a long story (two hours in the police station) short, the police showed me excerpts from an appendix to the law, Sexual Assault Act– 2006. One chapter (17?) was about leading someone into prostitution, which could lead to 5 years in jail, and another chapter (22?) was about using objects in the genital areas which could lead to from 15 years to life time imprisonment (or 500,000 KES fine). (The captain seriously said that there was scientific proof that these objects destroyed thousands of nerves in the sensitive areas!) The plain clothes said they were going to press charges. I said I had understood that I, not knowingly, had broken the Kenyan law. He said he was going to start the necessary procedures, taking fingerprints and all that, and then he told me was going to fetch the equipment, and while he was doing that I should find a solution. This was of course a clear hint that a bribe would do the trick.
I pretended for a while I didn’t understand this, but after some time I gave a suggestion of a compensation to the girl and a contribution to the important work of the police, say 30,000 KES. That didn’t seem to be enough.
He came back with the tools and asked if I had talked to the captain yet, but he had been busy, and I said I really wasn’t sure what to say. Then he wrote the figure 50,000 on a paper.
Finally the captain had time to talk to me: I said I had understood I had broken the law, but to save us all some trouble I suggested a compensation of 50,000 KES. The captain was silent for a few seconds, as to think it over, then he said OK.
I fetched my credit card, pulled 50,000 KES from an ATM, went into the police station back room and handed over the money. I asked the captain: ”My name does not appear in any papers?”, and he said ”No papers.”
It was an unpleasant experience, but in a way I’m glad I’ve been through it. But it’s not one I can tell anyone but you guys. What buggers me I didn't see it coming earlier.
If any of you local guys can obtain a copy of this Sexual Assault Act from 2006 and give a summary of what more is illegal it would maybe be enlightning for the forum. (I didn’t have the nerve to return to the police station and ask for a copy ;) ).
The VIP room in Casablanca is really good fun! There are three ”cubicles” with plastic covered sofas (anything might happen) on three sides and a high table with a pole in the middle. The girls dance in about 30 minutes sessions (same girls appear twice), and though they start with a bikini on, they soon get totally naked. If you look interested the dancer approaches you and you can touch her wherever you like, even give her pussy a quick lick (or finger). She will say ”Money”, and you put 100 KES in her stocking. If she likes you she might ask for a beer or a drink.
I had loaded my pockets with 100 KES notes, and I soon got two favourites: Rehema from Tanzania and Cristine. In addition to the notes, I also slipped a small paper with my phone number on it (you have to be prepared!) in their stockings. Rehema was the best dancer (sliding down on the pole upside-down, she unlatched her bra and landed bare-breasted!) with a terrific body, and Cristine had the firmest breast I have held and kissed in Africa.
After the show I went up to the disco and soon Rehema’s friend spotted me and brought me to Rehema. Unfortunately she couldn’t speak English, but she gladly joined me to the hotel. You can’t go wrong with a dancer! One session with amazing sex at night (came to the hotel 4AM) and more than one hour of totally exhausting sex in the morning. She had such a stamina: rode me backwards and forwards when I had to rest. This was in Fontana with just a fan and we were swimming in sweat! Best sex I had for 2000 KES! I told her friend: One night with Rehema makes you happy for two days!
Cristine called me in the afternoon, she said she had fucked another guy last night, next she wanted to fuck me! Good , but when I bought her a drink after the show next evening all hell broke loose: The other girls attacked her for stealing Rehema’s boyfriend! I left the mayhem and found Rehema at the disco. She was a bit sulky first but came with me for a second night. Whew!
So dating VIP dancers is a great experience, but be careful if you plan to double!
The VIP show is on on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, starting at midnight at weekends, but seemingly at 1AM on Wednesdays. Entrance fee is 300 KES, well worth the fun!
think you were taken for a bit of a ride mate but thats life in africa sometimes.

Every day of the two weeks I spent in Bamburi the beach was different. Some times crowded, especially on Christmas Day when there were thousands of Kenyans there, sometimes it was deserted like the days when there was post election riots going on nearby.
I like walking the beach, and it was so easy to pick up another beach walker those days the beach was not deserted: Just a greeting, a small chat and off you were. E.g. my first day: I had checked in at Bamburi Beach resort at 11 AM, stayed in the room just a short while to supervise the installation of the AC, then off to the beach. I turned north and and within a minute I noticed a girl walking slowly in the same direction. As I passed her I had a good look at her, saw she had a nice face and promising figure. We said ”Hi” and strolled together along the beach. She had a story, of course: 18 y.o., no house, sleeping on the beach, she wanted to go the her baby in a village outside Nairobi to give her the Xmas gifts but she had no money for the bus fare. Nothing to eat. So I invited her for lunch (first time she had spaghetti) and then up to my room. One good round, some sleep and then another good round. I gave her 1200 and she was happy with that. Of course she didn’t go to her baby the next day: I saw her several times the following days and chatted with her.
Another day a girl in orange bikini waved at me from distance. As I returned I stopped to talk to her: slim, wellshaped body, real beautiful face, but when she said she was from Eritrea I nearly lost interest remembering my ”condom allergy” encounter in Abu Dhabi ( http://www.internationalsexguide.info/forum/showpost.php?p=692589&postcount=1134). However, when the tide had come in and we were swimming, she let me finger her pussy and she gave me a handjob, so I thought this Eritrean was different. And she was; she became my daytime girlfriend; she could never stay the night because she had a shop together with her brother in Mombasa, and had to attend to that and also be a ”nice girl” for her brother. After a few days she seemed to become emotionally involved so I asked for a pause and gave her money for a mobile so she could call me. After a two days break she had let her emotions cool off but she was as hot as ever in the bed; she had shaved her pussy specially for me! One day she even brought a friend for a three-some! Some days she apperad in a black abaya with a blouse under but no panties! Pictures of the lovely girl in the Photo section.
The New Year Celebration seemed to become a disaster: Due to the post election riots the disco was closed at Tembo and very few people were there. Due to the riots previous on the day I didn't dare to go to Casablanca (where my VIP girlfriend celebrated her birthday). Just before midnight I went to the beach, but IlCovo wanted 500 KES in entrance fee so I opted out and watched the firework from the two beaches. As I started to walk southwards I met three girls, said ”Hi” to the one in white, and when I looked back she had stopped and was looking at me. A 22 y.o. meru girl working as a model. We had a drink in the moonlight, she said she had no ID but with Fontana that’s no problem. She had some funny comments in bed: ”Oh, you really know how to fuck”, ”Oh, you fuck like a professional”! We had two rounds, then she wanted to go back to her friends so I gave her money for taxi (3000 because it was New Year) and a small perfume bottle. Picture of sweet New Years Carol in the Photo section.
Barri wrote, that the girl said "Oh, you fuck like a professional"!
Assuming a girl likes it, is this a common used term in Kenya? Or is this only used if a prostitute wants to make the customer happy ("tell the customer what they like to hear. ")?
I'm asking, because I've met a girl in Kenya, she acted as a non pro, she did not charge me, in fact she did not want any money. She told me I should keep my money so I can come earlier to Kenya again to visit her.
To be honest I'm confused, as I could not figure out her interest in me. My rule, that a girl (especially in the 3rd world) always has got some interest (either money, or marriage, or at least clothes, mobile phone whatever) broke this time.
She made always fun with me and said: "you're a professional! ". So anybody knows, if this is a common saying? Or something which only says the pro at Cheers?
As I've met her at Cheers, I'm almost 100% sure, that she's looking for customers now. But again, why did she want no money? Should I worry? What's wrong?
The map has been corrected regarding location of Pirates (thanks Randy Candy) and the hotel table updated with some information, such as at Fontana you can have a portable AC in your room for 500 KES extra (thanks Jobair).
Two places have not been mentioned before: In Mtwapa there is a new place called Lambada. You can have a decent lunch there while watching cute mothers play with their kids in the pool. There is also a quite small disco floor there, but I was never there in the evening.
At the very north end of Bamburi Beach a new place is just opening up. It’s called Ya’mas and is run be a Greek. As of Jan 2008 only the bar is open, but they have sun chairs right on the beach, so it’s a place to take your daytime girlfriend for a relaxing drink. The hotel part will open later this spring.
Just to the left of the bar there is a massage place. Both Salama and Happy are quite happy to come to your hotel for a massage with a happy ending.
At the top end of the small beach just after Bamburi Beach there is ’cave’ for those who like outdoor activites, see pictures in the Photo section.
Hey, it's great to hear Yamas is back! The Greek owner is great, especially when he gets up and dances on the bar. Yamas opened back in early 2006 just below Reef Hotel over in Nyali. At first you could walk right through the hotel to get to Yamas, but then there was trouble with the owner. Next thing you know, fall of 2006, Yamas gets mysteriously destroyed. But it was one of the best spots on the coast for a few months. Watched Zidane blow the world cup in Yamas.
So it's good to hear that guy's got a better spot. If it's anything like the initial attempt, Yamas will be a quality place.
I passed by Tembo on Friday night and this time it really rocked.
There were plenty of gals.
What really crowned the night were gals who were dancing on the main counter.
One of the gals who was dark and slim removed her white top and danced topless. She had firm small boobs!
Quite a number of men, excluding me, were busy taking videos of her with their phones while teh rest of the club turbed their eyes to her boobs.
And she danced for almost 30 mins while two of her colleagues joined in with their raunchy moves.
