Beware the potato chip scam
After leaving HK and my quick tour of CC, I popped into Tropical. I like the place, but the music is really not to my taste and is so friggin' loud you can't hear yourself think, let alone carry on a conversation in a foreign language.
Anyway, got seated and got my 2x1 Tecate. Waiter comes over and tells me there is a young lady who wants a drink, and points her out sitting across the room. I told him she'd have to come sit with me if she expected a drink. So, he drags her over.
She's Crista de Sonora. Cute, light skin, shortish light brown hair, pretty smile, probably about 5' 6", maybe a bit taller. Maybe a bit chubby, but not excessive. Allegedly worked TB for 8 months, was a table dancer in Sonora before that. Not exactly my type, but nothing to complain about. Very friendly, a little Ingles, just turned 23, has an 8-year-old kid and a 4 y/o. What's with the girls squirting out kids at 14?? This certainly isn't the first. Makes me appreciate Vietnam. :)
I order a drink for her. Mesero brings it and, without me even seeing it, plops a huge bag of chips on the table. I guess I thought it was her bag/purse, or something, cuz I didn't notice it. He then proceeds to charge me $10.50. I looked at him and asked $10.50 for a drink?? He nods, I pay, I figure if this is the case I'm outta here. But it's too far out of line, so I'm suspicious. So, after a few minutes I notice the friggin' chips. I ask Ms. C about them and she says they're not hers. Hmm. It's time for another beer for her, so I call the waiter over and ask how much the drinks cost. $7. OK, sez I, take these chips back cuz I didn't order them, and bring me a LD and I'll give you $4 and we'll call it even. He nods and takes off with the chips. Waiter #2 delivers the LD. I hand him a 50 peso note and he wants more. Unfortunately, I don't know the Spanish words for potato chips. :( So, I explained twice that I returned the chips to the other guy, I wanted credit, and that the 50 pesos would more than cover the difference. He finally grasped the concept, nodded and took off.
Jesus Marimba! When did they start this sh*t? It's the petty stuff that really pisses me off. It's not the money, it's the pettiness of the whole thing. I'm in there, spending money, tipping the waiter quite well. How does it benefit his sorry ass to trick you into buying snacks?
Anyway, Ms. C was very friendly but I had to get back to LA to meet a friend for dinner. So, after her 2, and my 2x1, I split, promising her I'd come back next week.
Anybody know her, or know anything about her?
