When COVID hit there were more deaths than normal as there more susceptible people in the population than normal. It also explains why the current increasing rates of infection don't seem to have a correlated increase in death rate as many of the more susceptible people have, unfortunately, already died.

However, you need to consider that many elderly people do get vaccinated every year for the flu virus and therefore they will be protected. This is true for the UK, where flu vaccine is largely free for the elderly. For those elderly people, who couldn't vaccinate due to other medical conditions would have been extremely vulnerable to infections like Covid, which does not only affect the lungs but also other important organs in the most serious cases.
