... I've already solved it so GOL will hold the tickets until I arrive in Brazil...
Regarding payment of domestic GOL tickets bought online. I want to correct myself. GOL not only extends the reservation until the arrival day in Brazil, they extend it even more, they extend it until the day you're taking the flight. Excellent service!
Their service center for international calls lies in Montevideo, Uruguay. They speak Spanish, lousy English and no Portuguese. When you call them it's a lottery, you can get one of the good helpful attendants who solves your problem quickly or you can get one the attendants with absolutely no trace of brain activity who will make you loose tour temper and risking you breaking your phone.
i don't think they used to deactivate the number at all. basically they used to wipe the credits after about 3 months, hence the number appeared dead, however when you added credits everything just came back alive again and worked just fine. i know people that visit rio like 2 x a year and have had the same number for like 5 years.
i had a tim number that wasn't used in 9 months. last week i tried to activate it. didn't work, it was to late.
no worries, a new pre-pago tim chip only cost r$ 10. btw, tim's offer, calling other tim phones paying only 25 centavos / call is a really good deal.
p. s make sure to call tim and have them cancel the manchete tor****s that you will receive automatically. otherwise you'll loose a lot of your credits.
the rule was that, if not recharged, for the 4th month you could only receive calls and for the 5th only make emergency calls. thereafter the number was cancelled.
don't know if they changed it recently.
happy new year.
I never had a problem using an AMEX card.
There is also a chat on line option, also in English, that will solve all your questions. Depending on the time of the day there must be some waiting which is small if you choose the English language as I recall.

The problem is when paying online with foreign VISA.
GOL online help can't really help solving payment problems. You have to call the GOL international number.
As mentioned GOL put my reservations on hold until I arrived in Brazil. Worked excellent.
Just ignore this post if you know this already, but if you live in North America and are a member of Aadvantage, American Airlines frequent flyer program, you may be interested to know that in the off-peak season, which they define as March 1-May 31 and August 16-November 30, you can get a round trip award ticket to Brazil and other southern South America countries for 40, 000 miles if you are willing to fly in economy class. This is the best deal I am aware of, and I don't know how long it will last. Most other airlines require 60, 000 miles. And seats at the 40, 000 mile level aren't that hard to get; I've already booked my seat for late March-early April (although I've decided to go to BA rather than Rio, due to the high cost of just about everything in Rio. I doubt if I'll be back to Rio unless the real plummets again. BA today is like Rio was in 2002. But I digress.)
Here's a link to AA's award chart, if you're interested: http://www.aa.com/i18n/disclaimers/free-ticket-award-chart.jsp
Thank you for this valuable information, this is good news. Very recently American Airlines has become my favorite to Rio airline since they started their new flight from NY JFK to Rio direct non-stop. It used to be Continental when they had their Rio flight that left Newark at 10 PM and went thru Sao Paulo but that more or less has stopped and now you have to go thru Houston and leave much earlier during the day like 3:30 PM, so a day is wasted.
American's flight leaves at 9:25 PM so nothing is wasted and arrives Rio at 8:30 am next day.
I was on the American website about the same time as you but looking for an upgrade rather than purchasing a ticket and it was rather easy to get.
Too bad you're not stopping in Rio on that trip I would have bought you a beer.
I understand why you're not because it is expensive but BA has no beach so I wouldn't know what to do during the day. I would like to learn the Tango though and I have too much invested in time and money learning Portuguese as bad as it is.
So for now I'll stick to Rio and cut down on other things. Like staying in an apartment instead of hotels, like eating in more modest restaurants instead of the high end restaurants every night, like drinking more at home instead of in a Termas or bar/nightclub.
There are ways to cut your costs, I haven't really ventured out into the cheap casas in Centro yet or VM but I can still afford a 200 reais girl from Balcony or from Hotside daily.

I'm not trying to persuade anyone to switch from Rio to BA, just stating what I'm doing. What I do during the day is monger. The best places to go in BA are private apartments, which are open round the clock. So I fuck some girls during the day, then try to get some of them to moonlight with me at night, after they get off of course. That is a lot more difficult than in Rio, but I have had some success.

Last month I bought a TIM from the news stand in Sao Paulo for R$10 as you have said. Of course you need a CPF to activate it and mine has been expired for a couple of years. I went to the TIM store and the guy said all I could do was get a friend who has a CPF to activate it for me. I was going to get my SP namorada to do it for me but with so much fucking and so little time that went out the window. Of course another option is to apply for another CPF but that takes too damn long. Is there any other loophole someone may know?
Wanted to add to posts made by SB and Lorenzo. AA is definitely pushing routes to JFK. I have found $800RT from LAX to GIG (via JFK).

For those of you traveling within Brazil (and beyond) this site will give you cost comparisons on TAM, GOL, Webjet and Azul.

It also has other travel planning features like listings for hotels and pousadas.
I plan to travel for about 10 weeks all over south America. The focus of the trip is, of course mongering, but at the same time I want to experience the local culture and traditions. Needless to say, if I am mongering all the time I will quickly get tired of the scene. Moreover, I don't have funds to constantly participate in the hobby everyday for 10 weeks.
I really liked the Thailand experience before. There are plethora of opportunities to have fun with the girls. But after that you can participate in other kinds of activities. Normal massages, frolic around the beach etc etc. Moreover, if you get the girl for long time (LT) , she hangs out with you and you can do other "non-hobby" related stuff.
I want to do similar things when I travel all over south America. Of course, Brazil (Rio) is a given. I believe Buenos Aires is another such place. What are some of the other places I MUST visit for such an experience. Any beach towns? It would be great to experience the beaches and also hang out with some pretty girls. Also my Spanish language skills are minimal.
I really appreciate your advice in this regard.
Thanks
