The Renaissance, Intercontinental, & Grand Hyatt
I'm be one and a half months in SP starting in May. Given the cold night temperatures at this time of year, I'll have to pass on my favourite AirBnb because it has Aircon but no heating. I plan to stay a fair amount of days at Renaissance. Does the hotel have an in-room safe? Does the hotel have heating? Last time I stayed at Double Tree Itaim which had both the above. Renaissance is better situated than Double Tree for Casarao which now is reported to be operating (on my last trip it was still closed). Thanks.

Yes and Yes. The Renaissance is probably the best "5 star quality" hotel for hobbying due to a combination of location, cost and girl friendliness.
Of the three big American SP hotels; the Renaissance, The Intercontinental, & The Grand Hyatt, only the Hyatt had a thermostat that actually heats and can maintain a room temperature at 76 degrees Fahrenheit when the weather outside turns chilly. Forget about heating in the other two 5 star hotels where thermostat heat does not exist, but it is not that bad. Room temperatures at the Renaissance and the Intercontinental never fell below 70 degrees during my stays so it is manageable even for a Florida boy like myself who prefers a warm 78 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temp in my home. My solution to the lack of room heating in Southern Brazil is to bring along my Patagonia Fleece Pullover. I wear it all the time in my hotel room and I am never cold.
I think the Hyatt is the best of these three 5 star hotels because it has the nicest rooms and offers the best hotel amenities, but it has the worst location of the three which is something that I can not ignore. It is therefore not my 1st choice in hotels in SP. The Renaissance & the Intercontinental have the best locations. The Renaissance has nicer rooms and just a little bit better location than the Intercontinental, but the Intercontinental has a nicer swimming pool than the Renaissance.
There are FL hookers that hang out at the Hyatt and Renaissance Lobby Bars if that is of interest to anyone. I have never seen hookers hanging out at the Intercontinental.
Of course, there are room safes in all 3 hotels. The Hyatt and Renaissance room safes were large enough to stow my 15 inch laptop. I can't remember if the Intercontinental room safe was equally as large or I had to stow my laptop in my suitcase.
My hotel preference is therefore simple: I view the Renaissance & Intercontinental as interchangeable. I will stay at whichever hotel offers me the best deal and on the basis of the current amount of hotel points (miles) and free voucher nights I have in my 2 Chase Hotel accounts.
On my almost upcoming visit which begins this week, I am staying 3 nights for free at the Intercontinental and 5 nights free at the Renaissance (Marriott) in addition to a few pay later nights at both hotels and I am also staying at the Grand Hyatt free on points a couple nights before I fly to RJ.

Also good utilization of Frequent Flyer / Hotel Rewards Points for free stays at Hotels. Frees up more funds for "entertainment"!
In May-June-July How cold does it get in SP and what type of Coat / Jacket does anyone recommend to bring / wear?
