This table shows how expensive Madagascar costs to fly and remain for a 6-night stay from France in the first week of European summer holidays. It's the most-expensive, ahead of New York and Sydney! The reason: it's hopelessly underserved by the air industry; few want to fly to such an economic basket-case. There is a ferry service from Mauritius but it's not very cheap or frequent.

I think you do not have own experience. The price on that site is for business travel and wrong: only 1 hotel is 330 Eu in Tana, not average.
As tourist for our pleasure you can get flight from Paris below 1000 Eu and hotel for 20 Eu. Do not make wrong perception here, please.

The chart is an excellent comparison of economy travel and mid-range hotel costs to 20 world destinations. If you think you can get a flight to Madagascar from Paris for €1000 you are sadly mistaken.
Those who live in the real world know prices have risen sharply over the past few years. Air France charges €1765 economy return CDG-TNR at this time. Sure you can get a poor hotel, below the exectations of the average monger, for €20 -- but those were international 3-star average comparisons. It's quite shocking that a short visit to Antananarivo from Europe out-prices New York and Sydney. This seriously hinders travel to what is otherwise a great punting destination. One's best hope is to book well ahead.
Get your facts straight and don't feed the troll, aka Max, aka The Wolverine.
I am sorry but I agree with Frdrich55. Trevor2522, please respect other post unless you know better. I have been a few times to Tana (or Antananarivo for the ones who do not understand) to know what are the price that I should expect to pay to go there by plane from Paris.
Currently flights tickets from Paris to Antananarivo, for one person, economy, still costs less than 1000 EUR in the low season, unless you wait too long to buy your flight. During the high season prices will be higher. Last year I paid less than 1200 EUR in the high season but you need to compare the prices of companies and not just one.
Here are some examples for one person by company, Paris-Tana return, economy. I took them directly at the company's site on August 18.
- Air Madagascar site (not reliable enough for me to buy a ticket on line): 4 September. 21 September, price 977 including 389 airport taxes.
- Corsairfly: 7 September. 23 September, price 1 115. 11 eur, including 387 airport taxes.
- Air France: 6 September. 21 September, price 887. 44 including 389 airport taxes.
You will notice that airport taxes is a big part part (30% or more) of the overall ticket price.
One more thing. It seems that we have to pay now somekind of security tax for all outbound flights since June 2013 (I think). It costs 14.35 USD for international flights and 2.50 USD for domestic flights. Why do they use dollars? I don't know. Anyone can confirm? Thanks in advance.
Now about hotels in Tana.
The budget that I pay for hotels in Tana are more or less the same as Frdrich55. Even if I can pay more, the maximum budget that I pay is 30 eur per day. I don't need to be in three star (or more) hotels and I do not go to low budget hotels either. When the three star hotel is new, it is fine. After a few years the quality can go down. There are hotels in Tana not renovated enough. Moreover the girls that I see near expensive hotels seems to be more pros and greedy than the average. From time to time, I also prefer to stay in a flat or in appartment. With this option, the girl I bring back are not disturbed when we stay in bed longer.
This French site.

Gives an idea about the hotel rates. You can switch the language to English at the upper left corner, but there are still a few French left. Not all the hotels are referenced in this site. Still for the ones who go there the first time it gives you a pretty good idea of the rates and the type of hotel you can expect to find.
At last and this is valid for medium and big hotels in Tana, I do not expect that you will find any full booked nowadays. So take your time to choose which you prefer, even when you are already there you can switch quite easily to another hotel on short notice, unless you have already made a full reservation for the whole period that you stay.
Air France charges €1765 economy return CDG-TNR at this time.
Trev: Oddly it seems cheaper to fly from London to TNR with Air France, via CDG if nec. And Kayak. Com offers flights at £721.
Trev: Oddly it seems cheaper to fly from London to TNR with Air France, via CDG if nec. And Kayak. Com offers flights at £721.
Another exotic route is to cheaply fly to Bangkok mongering for a few day and directly to Tana with Air MAD for 1500us$. This option allow a certain buffer in the returned ticket in the case that you miss your flight.
Flying with air MAD has the following advantage.
1. Significant discounted price for domestic flights.
2. Re-scheduling is normally free. (website shows different price scheme for that but in reality its free)
3. In the case of rescheduling, Mada office is there everywhere you go. Other companies may have only the head office in Tana.
After 5 years of research anyone should know it already. But if a person never made it, its certainly not because of the flight price.

My facts: did book for November Air Mauritius from Paris for 980-EU. Air France was offered to me for 1200-EU, but with a long stop in Reunion.
And I will stay in the Sole Hotel in Tana for a night for 64. 000 MGA (a bit over 20-EU) before moving on.
If you plan ahead its still possible to fly for 1000 EU ex Europe and to stay in decent hotels for 25-EU average.

One thing is sure, Trevor rich experience from his non-stop flights to Mada, his detail reports from the last 5 years are a true exceptional. I am planing to print Trevor reports prior my next trip.
You won't print much. Is there any? .
Let agree to disagree. Trevor has been show a great knowledge though the years. OK he stole a few photos from John Palmer so what? Insulting Max no bog deal if you take into account his following contribution.

Trevor.
A "yes" or "no" question.
Have you ever been to Madagascar?

A "yes" or "no" question.
Have you ever been to Madagascar?
Vb
With questions such as "immigration search through your luggage?" and "Does they use FMG?" you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure it out. But this is not my issue as any member can post here even without actually visit Mada.
My only issue is that Travor made it personal as he pretend to know "Ella" from morandava and my "Marian" from Sambava. He also post her photo taken from "Tonga-Soa".
Now, There is some red lines needed not to be crossed.
Trevor has added some useful links, and I thank him for them. Not trying to "out him".
My question was simply to determine if he's actually been there. I can then know what's theory and what's based on his first-hand experience.
I can then know what's theory and what's based on his first-hand experience.
You are not that extremely naive. I remember much sharper as you gave advice to Max and JP prior their trip. Exactly on time when they got back the forum was flooded with photos and stories.
JP took "Ella" photo as a gratitude for you for your excellent tips for his first trip. Did you ask Max and JP "what's theory and what's based on his first-hand experience"? No! You didn't need to.
Lats wait for a real mongers reports such as Botaki, Labadi, TigeDeJade and other serious guys. Forget the Troll.
